Aquis Farm Helps Bale Out Farmers

Thoroughbred racing facility Aquis Farm has donated 480 bales of hay to drought stricken farmers in Western Queensland, after perfect growing conditions in the farm’s many paddocks created a massive stockpile. The 10 truckloads of large premium grass hay will be distributed to farmers by Buy a Bale, a rural charity that is currently helping farmers across drought areas of Queensland and New South Wales. Aquis Farm’s Justin Fung said it was important that Queensland businesses helped out farmers who were doing it tough. “Aquis Farm is pleased to partner with Buy a Bale, which is providing meaningful and tangible support for farmers who have no feed left for their cattle by delivering hay and other essential items,” he said. “Many farmers have been forced to destock due to lack of feed or ability to fund the feed and this has had a devastating impact on their livelihood. “We hope our little bit of excess can make a real difference.” Buy a Bale spokesman Charles Alder said the hay would make a real difference to those receiving it and it showed rural communities they were still top of the community’s mind. “While some areas have received rain, the financial drought will continue for years and our rural communities still need a lot of support. From our farmers, thank you Aquis,” he said.

Ready to haul out: Paul Schipp from Kymik Transport; Rob Ballard and Justin Fung from Aquis Farm and Charles Alder, and Brad Butcher from a BuyaBale

In June 2013 after reading the plight of Australian and predominantly Queensland farmers who were destroying their cattle and some being forced off their land, The Give Back Campaign decided to do something about it. After some brainstorming it was decided the best thing to do was to ask Australians to Buy a Bale of Hay and the feed would be delivered where it was most needed. Aquis Farm is a thoroughbred racing, boarding and breeding facility just outside Canungra. Located on over 447

hectares, the Farm caters for all aspects of the racing and breeding industry including racing, pre-training, spelling, agistment, walking on mares, foaling down or sales preparation. Aquis Farm is wholly owned by the Hong-Kong based Fung family, which is also progressing plans for an $8 billion integrated resort development at Yorkey’s Knob in Far North Queensland and operates Casino Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory.

Ready to Walk the Camino

On 13th April, seven Canungra locals will be off on an adventure to walk the first ten days of The Camino De Santiago through Southern France and Spain. Stephen Crook, owner of Live Fit Studio, took a group to do the same walk three years ago and has decided to do it again so more people can experience this wonderful walk. It is a challenging walk that crosses over the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain. They will walk different distances each day averaging around 20km a day. Stephen says “Although challenging, the walk is extremely beautiful and the experience far outways any of the challenges we face”. Stephen Crook, Monique Morcus, Wendy Nelson, Spike Minette, Maria Sheather, Anne Seville, and Richard Seville have all been doing lead up walks for the last eight months to get them ready for the adventure of a lifetime. From Amalgamation to Now By Virginia West

As a community we all remember the first few years of SRRC following amalgamation with a weak financial outlook and an ageing road network stretching from Canungra to Sydney and back! With expert financial guidance, disciplined budgeting, a patient and understanding community and some tough decisions by Council we are now rated by Queensland Audit Office as being one of the most financially sustainable local governments in Queensland. We can all be proud of this. This confidence and hard work is now culminating in Federal and State funding coming our way like never before - $21 million since December 2015 and that is without including the Beaudesert Town Bypass funding. Substantial investment and local employment are coming to fruition, capital expenditure on roads, bridges and vibrant town developments have increased and the general rate rise for 2015/16 of 2.5% or less for over half our ratepayers was the lowest in recent years. This term of councillors have worked cooperatively together and at times have not all agreed on issues but we have shared a goal to ensure the Scenic Rim retains its values as a great place to live, work and play with economic prosperity, local employment and enhancement of our natural and built beauty being celebrated.

The Local Government election will be held on Saturday 19th March 2016. Polling booths are open at Beechmont and Canungra State Schools.

Praise for Green Army Graduates

Parks at Canungra and Beaudesert are thriving after six months of hard work from local youth in the federally funded Green Army program. Eleven young people graduated from the program last week after planting 10,475 trees and doing ten hectares of weed treatment and eight hectares of site preparation in the region. Katisha Cordingley, Oasis Langtree, Moana Pearce, Jozeph Pearce, Kimberly Armstrong, Tymeka Mircic, Bethany Attwood, Rio Fairhurst, Anthony Hope, Ridge McKay and Courtney Currie graduated. Participants worked in teams led by Scenic Rim Regional Council and Campbell Page staff at Moriarty Park and Riverbend Park at Canungra, Carrigan Way at Gleneagle and Il Bogan Park at Beaudesert. Wright MP Scott Buchholz, who presented graduates with their certificates in a ceremony at Moriarty Park on Thursday 18th February, thanked them for their work. “On behalf of the community, the federal government and the council I applaud these graduates for all they’ve done for the community through the Green Army,” he said. “Every drop of sweat they’ve given will be remembered and every tree which grows at these sites will be their legacy – they’ve done a great service to the region and I thank them for that. “I wish them all the best in their future endeavours – whether they are continuing on in the next round of the program or going onto other training, education or employment opportunities I know what they’ve learned through being in the Green Army will hold them in good stead.” Oasis Langtree of Kooralbyn, who was among the graduates and will continue with the program, said the Green Army gave her new confidence, skills and independence. The 21-year-old, who is studying building design at university, praised the Green Army. “It’s great because it got me out of my comfort zone and helped me with my confidence, self-esteem and networking skills,” she said. “Now I have a sense of pride because I can come back and say ‘I planted that tree’ and I can use the links I’ve made and the things I’ve learned about the environment and sustainability as I work towards a job in building design.” For more information about joining the Green Army visit www.australia. gov.au/greenarmy

Ask the Candidates

Ahead of the Local Government Election on 19th March, The Canungra Times asked the five the Mayoral candidates and the two Division 3 candidates to tell us what they have contributed to the community over the past four years and what they would like to do to contribute to the community over the next four years? These are their responses:

Mayor John Brent

The past eight years of responsible and forward looking governance has allowed Scenic Rim Council the opportunity to build on the solid foundations established during my Mayorship. The core issues still remain. Roads, bridges, parks, and waste are at the top of my to-do list. I am committed to a 10% growth increase in road funding per annum while 19 new bridges in the past four years is a tremendous result. Canungra has benefited from a raft of projects aimed at bolstering the local economy and providing jobs. Already done is the 1.3 million dollar Geiger and Murphy Bridge replacement. Sixty 60 thousand dollars has also been spent on the landscaping and beautification of the Canungra School of Arts and Village centre. Given we are the second fastest growing economy in the south-east, last week’s wonderful news of a 220 million dollar investment over the next 20 years into the Kokoda Barracks will have major flow on effects for Canungra and surrounds. Aligned with this, Council has undertaken a series of Green Army projects alongside the Federal Government to boost jobs and opportunities. Currently in progress is a 150 thousand dollar rehabilitation of Double Crossing Bridge plus nearly 100 thousand is being spent on refurbishments to the Beechmont War Memorial and improvements to footpaths in Christie Street. Keeping it green and healthy is also key moving forward. This is what sets Canungra apart as we remain firmly committed to revegetation projects at Back Creek Beechmont and Canungra Creek.

Mayoral Candidate - Harry Wever

I believe the Scenic Rim deserves a Mayor who is fresh, energetic and has a vision for our region. The Council’s Community Plan released last year acknowledges that residents demand the protection of natural areas and our rural lifestyle. I’m the only candidate with a history of commitment to these exact concerns. I am a truly independent candidate, with no allegiance to a political party or vested interests, who stands for a better, fairer deal for ratepayers. I will always put my values of honesty and integrity first and demand the same from Councillors and Council officers alike. My 38 years as a vet has given me the skills to connect with people, to hear their concerns and to fix problems. With my experience and knowledge in environmental sciences including town planning, I have worked with communities to protect our natural and rural heritage and against inappropriate development. With new energy, I would “drive” more sustainable development including tourism, food security and encourage new, locally grown businesses. In the past eight years I have started up two new businesses in the Boonah area, a veterinary practice and a Bed and Breakfast. I am standing for Mayor because I believe Council needs new ideas and vision - something that is seriously lacking. I believe in a more secure, sustainable future embracing better transport solutions, renewable energy and improved job and lifestyle opportunities for young people and families.

Division 3 Cr Virginia West

Division 3 has had unprecedented road and bridge works over the last four years and as councillor I constantly highlight requests from constituents in all six areas from Beechmont to Rathdowney. Canungra has had three new concrete bridges - Geiger, Murphy and Biddaddaba Creek all now low maintenance for the next 60 years. Sharp Bridge has been rehabilitated, others the load limit raised and over $1.3 million spent on Sarabah Road flood ways. Extensive QRA work occurred on numerous sections of many roads around Canungra following the rain events from 2012 to 2015. Footpath work occurred on Lamington National Park Road to link the section past the school and work is about to commence on the footpath on Christie Street outside the pie shop. Various areas of tree planting and town beautification have commenced as part of the Vibrant Towns project. Arts and Open Studios, Be Healthy and Active program and Eat Local Week have increased in participation and encouraged local providers and visitors to the area. Community Grants have allowed so many local sports and community groups to achieve their planned projects. If re- elected I will continue to advocate for Canungra and Division 3 at all levels of government, support and encourage the many community and sporting groups who I already have strong associations with and be available to constituents. My focus is especially on continuation of improving and funding our ageing road and bridge network, delivering optimal levels of service within the budget constraints and advocating for local employment and business prosperity.

Division 3 Steve Moriarty

I am a current committee member and past president of the Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre management committee (2008-13) during which time we paid back a $40,000 Council loan. I also coordinated the FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year awards and performed master of ceremony duties at the Canungra Christmas Carols during this time. I have regularly organised and supervised the children’s fundraising discos at Moriarty Park. I regularly referee social touch football at Moriarty Park on Monday nights and volunteered as a ring steward at Canungra Show for many years. I am currently a leader of the Canungra Youth Group and chairman of the Beaudesert District Uniting Church Council. It will be an honour and a privilege to serve the community in which I was born and have lived most of my life, should I be elected. I will be actively involved in as many community organisations as possible. I will listen to resident’s concerns and act with honesty and integrity. I will strive to improve outcomes for ratepayers and residents and work hard to ensure Council provides the basic services that people deserve and expect, including routine maintenance and upgrading of roads and bridges. I will support new ideas and initiatives for sustainable development and job growth throughout the region, while working hard to protect our amazing natural environment, and the wonderful lifestyle we cherish, for future generations.

Mayoral Candidate - Dave Cockburn

When I look back over the last four years and consider contributions to the community, the one thing that comes to mind is my role as chair of the Scenic Rim Health Task Force. I remember being in attendance at the Gold Coast and giving a cheer when the Health Minister announced that maternity services were to return to the Beaudesert hospital. This has had such a positive impact on our region. Another exciting announcement was the $10 million for the Bromelton SCT project. I have served as a member of the local Regional Development Australia committee and this committee had a role in attracting this Federal funding. I have served on the board of SEQ Recreation Facilities overseeing the successful QLD Moto park. I was chairman during the planning and construction of this great local facility that has drawn thousands of visitors to the Scenic Rim. I have continued my work at the Rathdowney visitor information centre and museum by serving as the committee chairman. I have also enjoyed volunteering at the Beaudesert Kingfisher Rugby League club. If elected Mayor, I have the experience, knowledge and passion to bring positive change to Scenic Rim. After eight recent years serving on Council I have a real appreciation of the job ahead. I want to connect the council closer to the community with much more consultation. I will be a full time Mayor committed to the community and our rate payers. I will be trustworthy and reliable as your region’s representative.

Mayoral Candidate - Greg Christensen

I live to the west, so am not a daily part of the Canungra scene. I am an active member of my local Rural Fire Service. I also volunteer on the board of a Prison Chaplaincy service across Queensland and I have been a mentor for young people at risk. In recent years I had pulled back other activities to support development for my autistic granddaughter. I have also been actively researching and challenging the current mayor and council on issues such as extreme rate increases, flaws in our operating model, and failed planning decisions such as Guanaba Experience. For Canungra and our other communities, I will lead to develop a uniting vision for Scenic Rim that respects each community and builds it as part of something greater, so we are all better off. I have plans ready to work with each community, first to get proper communication restored with Council, then to plan for growing that community within the total Scenic Rim plan. I also have plans to tackle our cost base with waste reduction programs as a cornerstone for bringing rates and charges into control. I will also break down the bureaucracy that is stifling customer service in council. This will restore business confidence to invest and grow locally, with a supportive council. In short – reinvigorating and refocusing our Council to Put Ratepayers First as the foundation for a successful future.

$220 Million Investment for Kokoda

My life has been heavily dedicated to enriching the social fabric of the immediate community in which I have lived. Before my return to Beechmont in 2013 I was the Founder of the Gypsies CC. I was the Foundation Secretary of The Sydney Harlequins RUFC, the VP of The Gallipoli Memorial Club and Director of The Rugby Club. On my return to Beechmont I became actively involved in the community having been elected Treasurer of BRASA in 2014; VP in 2015. I am an active member of the Beechmont CC having been re-established after an absence of some 15 years. My focus in supporting the club has been organising inter-region games with Clubs such as the Fassifern Rangers and enriching the inter-region connection. I re-established and organised the Beechmont Christmas Carols at Graceleigh Park in 2015 and was MC for the event. It would be unfair to make any personal claims on any of the success in relation to the above. The success has been only due to the committed efforts and support of many other individuals within the community. This dedication and community spirit is what has achieved results that enriches the outcomes for all. If elected I will vigorously seek to empower the Divisional Representative to regain control of the divisional requirements and expenditure allocations that will directly impact on the people and ensuring the engagement process takes place with the people. It is neither my job nor the members job to set the priorities as this is the community’s job, right and privilege.

The Kokoda Barracks at Canungra is set for a $220 million investment through the federal government’s 2016 Defence White Paper. Wright MP Scott Buchholz announced government plans to invest $20 million in the barracks in the next decade and a further $200 million between 2025-26 and 2035-36. The money will be used to upgrade infrastructure at the Kokoda Barracks to support Australian Defence Force training. The investment is part of the government’s plan to increase Defence spending by $29.9 billion over the next decade. Mr Buchholz welcomed investments for Wright set out in the White Paper. “Defence is already a major employer in Wright with over 600 Defence personnel based in the electorate, which has significant flow-on effects for the local economy,’’ he said. “The investments outlined in the Turnbull Government’s 2016 Defence White Paper will strengthen our Defence Force and provide a welcome boost to the economy of Wright.” He said Defence was a priority for the government. “I’ve continually advocated to the Defence Minister and the Prime Minister the value of the Kokoda Barracks from a military strategy perspective and also from a community and economic benefits perspective. “This government will not allow Canungra to have vital Defence infrastructure stripped from it – we will ensure the full maintenance and viability of the base.” To view the 2016 Defence White Paper visit www.defence. gov.au/whitepaper

An Old House Finds a New Home

At a time when some of the older buildings in the centre of Canungra are being demolished to make way for higher density housing, one family is bringing an older home to town. Samantha (Sammy) and John-Paul (JP) Lo Giudice and their young son, LeonThis building will be relocated to Canungra ardo (Leo), have recently purchased the property next to the Police Station on the corner of Kidston Street and Lamington National Park Road. All things going to plan, in mid-March they will relocate an old school building from the Bulimba State School in Brisbane to the land. The building, named ‘Block C’, was built in 1884 which was the same year that Canungra was founded. The photo of the building (above) was taken in 1915. The building has been well maintained, although modified over the years to suit the needs of the school. Sammy and JP plan to remove some of the non-original additions and reinstate some of the original features such as the verandahs. Sammy and JP are both Osteopaths who have a passion for supporting clients to optimal health. They will be setting up practice in ‘Block C’, and are aiming for a grand opening in late 2016. They are very much looking forward to making Canungra their home and becoming part of the vibrant community. First 5 Forever at Canungra Library

By Raylene Jensen

Did you know that up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years? Sharing stories, rhymes, singing, talking and playing with your child from birth builds a foundation for your child’s future development that can last a lifetime – whether that’s talking about what you can see on the way to the park, singing nursery rhymes, pointing out something you both view out the window, or learning new words while shopping for groceries. First 5 Forever connects parents to a range of resources and ideas for you to try, and links you to your local library for more ideas and information you can use any place, any time. At free Baby Rhyme time and Story time sessions at your local library you can also meet other families and have fun finding old and new favourite rhymes and stories that you can share with your child at home. Canungra Library currently has Storytime on Mondays at 9.30. If you are interested in Baby Rhyme Time sessions, please contact the library on 5543 5791, or Beaudesert Library on 5540 5142. Beaudesert Reunion

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Oh no, it’s election time... So we are all aware by now that we need to vote for our local government representatives on 19th March. As it happens, just as the election date was announced, I’d finished reading the autobiography of Nelson Mandela, long walk to freedom. Here is a man who had to fight for things we in Australia take for granted. As a black man living in South Africa, he was restricted in where he lived, where he went, which train carriage he got on. In fact, it was not until 1994 that he was even allowed to vote! So we are all horrified by that? Those who are too young to remember the struggle probably are. Here is something else to be horrified about: • In 1962, the Menzies Government (19491966) amended the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 to enable all Aboriginal Australians to enrol to vote in Australian federal elections. • Women were not allowed to vote in Australian Federal elections until 1902, and depending on which State you lived in, not able to vote in all State elections until 1908. Really, these changes have come about in a fairly short space of time. Today, it seems a bit embarrassing to know that Australia only gave Aboriginals the vote in the last 50 years, and women in the last 100. We are fortunate to live in a country where we all have the right to vote for others to represent us at a Local, State and Federal level. We may or may not get the person we want, depending on the majority vote, but at least we have a say. We have no fear of being harassed, attacked or shot while trying to cast our vote.

The annual Beaudesert Reunion will be held on Saturday, 12th March 2016 at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church Hall in Albert Street, Beaudesert, commencing at 9.30 am. This year we celebrate our 64th REUNION. We are hoping the “Baby Boomers” and other generations will wish to attend and celebrate with their family and friends. Whether you were born in the Beaudesert district, educated in Beaudesert or resided in Beaudesert district, please come and reconnect with old friends and relatives at the Reunion. Those who have been to past reunions have thoroughly enjoyed the time they have spent meeting up with long-lost acquaintances. Morning tea will be provided, and refreshments are available if you supply your own lunch. There will be a minimum $2.00 entry fee, with a lucky door prize, and a raffle with a number of prizes drawn on the day. For more information, please contact Ray Rooks on (07) 5541 2388, Judy Balmer on (07) 5541 2172 or Shirley Antcliff on (07) 5541 1296 Sincerely, Shirley Antcliff The Beaudesert Reunion Committee

National Park Road

Dear Editor, There is an approx. 2 km stretch of Lamington national Park Road that is in an absolute disgracefully bad condition. It has been in that condition for thew whole time the sitting councillor and the state Member for Beaudesert have been in office. The state of this road is an embarrassment. It is a gateway to some of our areas most popular tourist destinations and the way home for may local families. It is in a dangerous state and causes a lot of damage to vehicles using it everyday. Locals need to remember that nothing has been done about this road when we go the local government elections in March. The road may be a state road and yes, our State Member has done nothing about it either, however Council have not advocated for the funds needed to get this road fixed. They have not stood up for the residents living on this road. PK Croft, Canungra

Dear Editor, I would like to remind the community to make sure their street numbers are clearly identifiable for emergency services. Love to everyone Emma-Louise Charles, Tamborine

Election Time

Dear Editor, Shortly we must review the performance of our Councillors and Mayor and act accordingly. If voters decide they want change, they have some work to do in order to create the best opportunity for invoking the necessary changes. First, we must realise that in these modern times Councillors and the Mayor – once elected – will attempt to be re-elected and will use any mechanisms legally available to ensure results will favour them. In other words, they exchange votes (preferences) with someone else. This could mean that YOUR vote will contribute towards the election of a Candidate which YOU may not want to vote for at all! On election day YOU have the power to DIRECT these “Preferences” and decide who will get your vote if your “No: 1 choice” does not get “Past the Post”. So, if you have decided that CHANGE is a MUST, browse “the Field” of worthy hopefuls and try to identify the “Stooges” in the pack who are only there to allocate their preferences to the current regime. After evaluating candidate’s intentions, make a list (with your preference No: 1, 2, 3 etc) “Firmly In-Mind” and fill our ALL preferences on your ballot paper. To conclude, if the desired change did not happen, join the Scenic Rim Ratepayers Association in an attempt to “Lay the Footwork” for it to happen the next time. The website will enrol you as a member and take your $10. If the change has happened, join the SRRPA to ensure that those who have been part of the CHANGE are “Kept to their Promises” and keep governing our shire for the best interest of its Ratepayers rather than BOW to the wishes of Corporate interests. As one (now deceased) Politician once aptly expressed: “. . . . .keep the Bas***ds honest”. Become part of the process rather than remain the Victim of it! Is Clean Energy the Future for the Scenic Rim?

Scenic Rim Mayoral Candidate, Dr Harry Wever believes the Scenic Rim is an ideal place for innovative research and investment into new, clean energy technologies. “We have all the ingredients right here to facilitate partnerships with universities and clean energy start-ups,” said Harry. “We have the land; we have expertise in agriculture - a complementary industry; we are close to Queensland’s major energy market - Brisbane and we have major universities nearby who are recognised world leaders in clean energy research,” he said. “With the Queensland Government recently releasing its Bio-energy Strategy, the Council should get off its backside and start knocking on the doors of our universities to find out what they need to attract funding for clean energy projects.” “And the Federal Government currently has over $2.5 billion to invest in approved clean energy projects. The question is why has the Scenic Rim

Mayoral Candidate Dr Harry Wever

Council not developed its own strategy to attract investors and researchers to locate and invest here and leverage funding from the federal and state governments?” He said. Dr Wever said that if elected Mayor, he would immediately initiate an audit of all Council and government land in the region to determine whether any would be suitable for clean energy projects

“If you don’t know what you have, how can you know what you can offer to attract the kind of industry and jobs that complements the Scenic Rim’s precious clean, green image.” Dr Harry said he would also invite senior researchers from Queensland, Griffith, Southern and Central Queensland Universities to present to Council and to a public forum on where they see opportunities for collaborative research in the Scenic Rim. “It would be important for the public to know from the get go so that they can be confident that it would not be a repeat of the coal seam gas debacle of a few years ago,” said Dr Harry. “This initiative fits squarely with my commitment to always be open and transparent and to fight for new, sustainable jobs for the Scenic Rim.” “The Scenic Rim Council needs to be re-energised and it is positive ideas like my cost effective clean energy strategy which will give the much need jolt,” he said.

Well Being

Childhood Favourites

With Clancy Lee Beck

Live Your Life To better serve clients with their health goals I’m currently doing a 12-month coaching program to discover the issues behind weight gain. Last week I had to answer the following question “If you were to teach and speak about something for the remainder of your career, what would you teach and speak about?” I was somewhat surprised with my answer:“Life is not a rehearsal! Get out there and experience everything you can. Follow your dreams, however crazy or scary they seem. Because something amazing happens when you step out of your comfort zone - you realise you are more than you first thought. You find a strength and ability you never knew you had. You realise that qualities you thought belonged to others, are actually your own. More things are achievable than you think, so never stop turning over stones or looking for answers - there is always a way to make your desires happen. Grab life by the horns, and don’t let ‘life’ or excuses hold you back!” Although not strictly a ‘health’ message - it summed up exactly what’s needed to bust through the weight loss or fitness barrier. Every single sentence applies to your health journey. You’ve got to get uncomfortable. You’ve got to want it like your life depends on it - because it does. I’ve cycled across Australia, scaled mountains in Nepal, kayaked shark-infested waters, and walked alone through central Australia. All of those things made me want to cry, curl up and hide, and caused me so much pain and exhaustion I wished I’d never started. But those were the things that made me who I am. And they are the experiences now that I cherish the most. Because I discovered the message that forms the answer I gave. Life is there for the taking, whoever is brave enough to take it!

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

Upgrade Laheys Crossings, Upper Coomera Rd

Council has secured $276,000 from the Queensland Government as part of the Community Resilience Fund which will be used to replace the current low level pipe culvert with a multi cell concrete box culvert on a new alignment. The project totals $690,000 ensuring resilience to future floods. Funding was also received to upgrade to bitumen seal both approaches to Mollenhagen Bridge on Gray Road at Illinbah. In recent years nine floodways on Sarabah Road have been restored and improved with resilience funding to a total of $1.3 million.

SRRC Road Network

Council’s road network totals 17,000 kms which equates to a distance from Canungra or Beechmont to Sydney and back again! Since 2012, unprecedented work has been undertaken on the road network throughout the area, funded by both Council and QRA (Queensland Restoration Authority) on a prioritised basis. However there is still much more to be undertaken in the future years. Since 2012 10 bridges have been replaced, 14 rehabilitated and 28 bridges have had the load limits removed.

Footpath On Christie Street

Work on the upgrade of the section of footpath on Christie Street outside Blackbird Country Pies is scheduled to begin in late March with a completion date, weather permitting, in early May. This will be a most welcomed upgrade for all pedestrians.

Clean Up Australia

The annual Clean Up Australia event is on Sunday 6th March and any residents who would like to be involved, just picking up any rubbish on your own street is all that is required, are urged to join an existing group or register one of their own. The closest group is Canungra Community and you are welcome to contact me regarding this or create your own site on www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. It only need take an hour and it’s a great way to meet new people.

Launch Of “War Stories & Our Town: Anthology From Scenic Rim”

This beautiful publication was launched by His Excellency Mr Paul de Jersey the Governor of Queensland at a civic reception at the Centre last week. Ten local writers were inspired as part of the Anzac 100 Community Writing and Story Project to capture stories from our community from World War 1 until the present day in order to preserve this valuable history for future generations. It was an honour to have the Governor visit the Scenic Rim in his busy schedule.

In the last few years, I have been lucky enough to travel to some of the most stunning locations in Australia and overseas. This usually entails working with or photographing the wildlife that inhabit these incredible locations. In recent times, I became focused on fulfilling a childhood dream of visiting Lord Howe Island to see the enigmatic Lord Howe Island Woodhen. Lord Howe Island is on many Australian’s ‘bucket list’ for many different reasons. For me, it was the chance to see one of the most extraordinary natural wonders of Australia and to see first-hand the efforts that are being undertaken to protect its future. In 1982, Lord Howe Island was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in recognition of the island’s biodiversity. Seventy-five percent of the original vegetation on the island remains untouched and the surrounding marine environment is one of the most pristine in the world. The island has more seabird species breeding in higher numbers than anywhere in Australia. I was not disappointed in my hunt for the Lord Howe Island Woodhen and had several memorable sightings, which allowed me to take some incredible photos. In the 1970’s, only 30 of these birds remained alive. Today, thanks to a successful captive breeding program and pest eradication program, the Lord Howe Island Woodhen numbers have increased. Another highlight was the many seabird species nesting around the island. Many species were at different stages of their breeding cycles. The White Tern, Sooty Tern and Brown Noddy all had chicks. The Flesh-footed Shearwaters and Wedgetailed Shearwaters were an incredible sight coming into their nesting colonies on dark. Red-tailed Tropicbirds and Black-winged Petrels were also nesting on the cliff-lines of Lord Howe Island. Seabirds such as the Masked Boobies were nesting on Roach Island, just off Lord Howe Island’s southern tip. To round out the trip, I decided to go on a boat trip to see Ball’s Pyramid, the world’s largest sea stack, 23 kilometres south of Lord Howe Island. Here several seabirds such as the Kermadec Petrel and Grey Ternlet could be observed. For whatever reason one chooses to visit Lord Howe Island, this extraordinary place will capture you. For me, it was the chance to experience and encounter unique bird species and observe them in their natural environment going about their everyday trials. I would strongly recommend visiting Lord Howe Island Woodhen this extraordinary place.

Anyone can volunteer their time by registering on http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/ (site name: Canungra Creek) or simply turning up on the day. Enclosed footwear, sun protection, and drinking water is advised. Gloves and rubbish bags will be provided on the day.

Great Watermelon Feast

After tidying the creek surrounds for Clean Up Australia Day, the Canungra Village Garden Project team will be hosting the first inaugural Great Watermelon Feast in the beautiful amphitheatre and surrounds behind the school. The Great Watermelon Feast will be the first of our social events for the year, with a truckload of free watermelon to feast upon, crafts for kids, and games/activities for all. There will be a prize for the most interesting home-grown produce, so take a peek in your garden for your curliest zucchini, the cutest pumpkin, or the hottest chilli. There will be a raffle drawn with the prizewinner taking home a lovely selection of potted fruit trees and plants. Those who miss out on the raffle need not go home empty handed there will be a range of our coffee cup seedlings on sale! All funds raised will go toward the building of the Village Garden Project (our community garden). Entry is free for Clean Up Australia Day volunteers, or tool/gold coin donation for all others. Time and Date: Sunday 6th March, 1-4pm.

The Lamington Spiny Crayfish have been very numerous on the walking tracks in our national parks with recent rain. In fact, great care needs to be taken to avoid a collision with these beautiful animals. With recent rain and swollen watercourses this very special inhabitant of our plateaux, Beechmont, Springbrook and Tamborine, can be seen out on the walking tracks in the National Parks. Great care is needed by walkers to avoid their aggressive behaviour as they wave their claws overhead and hiss audibly. Clear running mountain streams bordered by rainforest are essential for their well being. High altitude streams of the Coomera River catchment, including the Back Creek, are part of their range. This species is a protected, endemic (ie they don’t occur anywhere else) creature. They have an important and unique position in aquatic food webs. They are major processors of organic matter acting as shredders, predators, collectors and grazers. They are an important source of food for other fauna including invertebrates, frogs, fish and platypus. They also assist in maintaining river health and structure. Spiny crayfish, the genus Euastacus, are widely distributed Crayfish with commensal friends. Photo Lara Solyma in Australia extending from far north Queensland to the South Australia/Victoria boarder. Lamington and Springbrook crayfish populations are vibrant blue or blue-green contrasting with white. Named ‘Spiny’ because of the large and prominent spines on tail and claws, the spines distinguish them from smooth-shelled yabbies found in farm dams. The crayfish pictured [above] is carrying a group of flat worms called temnocephalids. Many crayfish species have a commensal host relationship with a particular temnocephalid species. The temnocephalids do not harm the crays, but feed on detritus and micro-organisms they can access as hitch-hikers.

As the Sun cruises through Pisces, so any rigid sense of order you have, is dissolved slowly, like sugar in water. Jupiter’s presence in your sign is having a similar effect. Life is shifting you out of the places of stuckness you wanted to be shifted out of. To be grateful now would be amazing.

As Venus splashes into Pisces, so you are taken into a big, deep, ocean of feeling. Emotions don’t always make sense to the linear brain. They aren’t meant to. They have their own poetry, their own logic. By shifting out of ideas, into the world of poetic sensitivity, you will ride the wave.

News from St Luke’s

Suduko

By Di Ayscough

Have you ever come across a symbol in your life that you immediately recognise and relate to, something special or important? Some friends who were recently overseas noticed a cross hanging from the mirror of the taxi they were travelling in. They asked the driver if he was a Christian and he was. Without the symbol of the cross they would not have recognized the faith of the driver. We all have symbols or signs we relate to in life. Maybe it is the sign or emblem of your favourite sports team, maybe it is your school crest or a street sign pointing you in the right direction. Because the cross is such an important sign of Christianity we now have a spotlight to illuminate the cross on the bell tower at St Luke’s. We hope this may draw some attention to our building and encourage people to want to see more. If you would like to take a look inside why not come along to the Car Boot Sale on Saturday 12th March. The Church will be open from 8am and will contain the book sales from St George’s church. The grounds will be filled with Car Boot sellers, with many things for you to purchase. As well there will be our home made cake and produce stall. Devonshire tea, sausage sizzle, drinks and much more. Tickets will also be on sale for our Easter raffle. Please come along and enjoy the activities and find the bargain you have been looking for. In the mean time think about the symbols in your life which help to make you stand out as a person of our great community of Canungra.

Solution page 33

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Bullock team all yoked up ready to take the strain of loading the log

Could You Load this Log?

Tony Smallwood, Tamborine Historical Society

Timber-getting was the earliest industry in the rainforests of Nerang and Tamborine where cut timber was hauled out of the forests to nearby riverbanks by bullock teams. In the more inaccessible areas, the logs were often hauled to a gully or creek and left until flood rains could carry them out to the river. Very large trees could fetch prices of up to £200, a fortune in mid 1800s. As many as 12 sawmills were active in various parts of Numinbah Valley in the early 1900s with extensive deforestation being associated with harvesting a range of hardwood timber trees. There’s more to it than walking alongside a group of bullocks with their heads down. The sounds of heavy breathing, wooden yokes, and chains clinking on the necks of large beasts echo across the hills. There is a big connection between the driver and his bullocks. Every animal has its own character. Some bullocks have to be called strongly into action. Others as soon as called just wanted to get going. You nearly had to slow them to a stop. They really wanted to work. At one time there were once up to 26 bullock teams working along the local rivers, backwards and forwards. The bullocks slowly faded out since the 1930s. The few bullock teams left in Australia are vital components of our heritage. Bullock teams and their drivers helped to build the country’s inner foundations, with those hardy animals transporting heavy and bulky goods to and from the inland before machinery and rail took over. The pictures were taken by a member of the Tamborine Historical Society who came across the action purely by chance while travelling through the Numinbah Valley.

The committee and President, Stephen Mills, are excited to bring in the new season with previous members and look forward to acquainting ourselves with all our new ones. 2015 was a great year with many memorable achievements. Many thanks must go out to all those who made the commitment and devoted their valuable time and effort to making our club great. Sport Canungra Area Golf Club With Mary Groves

Golf, the male bastion, has finally been breached at Canungra on 16th January through a resounding win by Shirley Lake with an applaudable 38 stableford points. Not only that, but Tanya Bobermien came second with 38 points on a count back, and running a neat fourth was Jacinta Toohey. Well done and congratulations ladies! Now it is proved that it can be done, let’s go for it ladies and gents. The not for profit golf club off the Beechmont road could be one of Canungra’s best facilities. With its air-conditioned, licensed club house it is a great venue for functions or simply meeting friends for an affordable game. Golf carts are on hire for non-walkers as are club sets. Catering for golfing groups can also be arranged. The competition is not so much personal but is against those little white balls. One would swear they have a mind of their own. It is a game of

patience, honesty and persistence and is not only a way to keep fit without gym fees but can be a great fun game for social groups in the parkland course settings, platypus included. The Canungra Area Golf Club members are keen to find our own Jason Day or Carrie Webb, so it welcomes the inclusion of new faces to their ranks from any district, and will offer every assistance to newcomers to master this very addictive pastime.

Sport FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year Awards By Bren Dalby Once again a tremendous cross section of our talented sportspeople and community spirited sports contributors were represented in the nominations received throughout the year. Sadly a number of nominees could not attend due to other engagements/ commitments ... these younger guys have hectic social lives, and the older ones have to work! They were all however honoured for their respective achievements on the night. We had a good turn out still and I think everyone enjoyed the evening ... still can’t understand however why the butterscotch sauce was not utilised for the sticky date muffins????? Haha! Tony and Anne from FoodWorks, as ever, supplied us with all food and drinks for the light supper provided for everyone as well as some raffle prizes. We are forever indebted to FoodWorks for all our events; they are truly the life force of many groups and organisations locally and it would be nice if us locals took the time to personally thank them for the amazing amount they contribute to the community. Tony and Candice were able to attend which was great. Needless to say I found a job for Candice whilst she was there! Candice also organised the vouchers and Sportys’ gift cards on behalf of FoodWorks and got all the food ready for collection; thanks heaps

Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Vice-President, Bren Dalby with FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year, Gabbie Wilson; Cr Virginia West and Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre President Shona Kraayvanger.

Candice; made life a whole lot easier for me!! Cr Virginia West presented the trophies on the night and her attendance was greatly appreciated. Huge thanks too, to Alesia, Shona, Connie, Mary and all those who helped put the night together ... and to Ciaran McCabe who helps with everything

wherever he goes (regardless of on this occasion having a yucky ear infection); Ciaran even got up at the end to thank me for all I do and shook my hand ... well that got a tear or two happening! Bless him! The judging is always hard and as we are not comparing apples with apples so to speak, different opinions crop up of
