Sportsperson
A great and well attended night was held on Friday 3rd February at Moriarty Park to present the annual FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year Awards. The guest speaker was the 2005 recipient of the Moriarty Park Sportsperson of the Year - World Champion Hang Glider Jonny Durand. Jonny is a Beechmont local who has achieved marvellous success in the world of hang gliding and is leading the world ranking this year. Jonny is heading to Brazil in August this year for the World Championships. It was inspirational for everyone present to hear Jonny, and fellow hang glider Ken Hill, speak, and realise the tremendous achievements and success that can be reached in one’s chosen sport with dedication, practice and passion. As ever the judging was a difficult process but Moriarty Park President Bren Dalby thanked the three judges and said they reached convincing results for both awards. Murphy Baker took out the Foodworks Sportsperson of the Year 2016 for his great soccer accomplishments. Murphy attended, after being invited, a West Ham Youth Academy in London in Easter 2016 and was evaluated either a Fair or Good for every category by West Ham coaches. No mean feat!!! Murph has now trialled and been invited to play in the Under 13 National Premier League on the Gold Coast for this season. Murphy was also accepted for an academic and sports scholarship at The Southport School in 2017 as a Year 7 and looks forward to playing soccer for his new school too.

FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year, Murphy Baker, and Achiever of the Year, Morgan Lee
Morgan Lee was the popular recipient of the FoodWorks Achiever of the Year Award for an unbelievable list of amazing swimming achievements over all strokes, distances and classes! Morgan is a regular swimmer at Canungra Pool and represented Tamborine Mountain State High School at District, Regional and State level in 2016. Morgan competed and finished very well in the Queensland School Sports Championships and on the strength of her success there was selected for the 2016 School Sport Australia Swimming Championships. The list of Morgan’s achievements is incredible, as is she. The Moriarty Park Committee would like to thank Tony and Anne from Foodworks who sponsor this event every year, enabling
monthly award recipients to receive $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 Sportys voucher, as well as providing the trophies and the catering requirements. Thank you to all who attended and all who helped on the night - especially in the clean up afterwards where it was so lovely that everyone just found a mop, broom, towel The raffle on the night cleared well over $100 for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. The total amount was donated and a paver in the Walk for Wildlife was requested in the name of Murphy Baker - a lasting reminder of his sporting achievements. Mrs Pam Moriarty took out the ‘big’ prize in the raffle of two Hot Air Balloon rides donated by Murray from Go Ballooning.

Community in Shock - Roslyn Lodge Set to Close
Tamborine Mountain’s only aged care facility is set to close on 31st March following an announcement by Queensland aged care provider PresCare at a meeting on 9th February. The decision shocked staff, residents and their families who say they had no prior indication that the 38 bed facility would be closed. Chief Executive Officer, Greg Skelton said the age and maintence of the building and ongoing struggle to keep the facility financial viable have forced the closure. In a statement release on 28 February, Mr Skelton said the building itself is not fitfor-purpose as it was built as a hostel, not a high-care facility. “With the changing needs of the community, the building has significant limitations that will, over time, create a potential risk to the safety and wellbeing of our residents and staff. This is not acceptable.” Mr Skelton said there have been a number of studies to assess if construction on the block and adjacent block could bring it into line with PresCare’s standards of care, however no viable options were able to be identified.
Tamborine Mountain resident Janet Green said the closure of Roslyn Lodge will result in some families being separated. “We have no public transport on the Mountain and the closure is going to make life very difficult for couples where one is in care and the other can not drive,” said Janet. Mr Skelton’s statement said that PresCare put Roslyn Lodge up for sale in 2014 through an aged care sales agent. “A number of aged care providers conducted due diligence analysis on the site
and all concluded, as we did, that the location is no longer viable as an Aged Care facility.” Roslyn Lodge has appointed a Tranition/Case Manager to work with providers to secure transfers of residents to other facilities. Prescare’s web site states simply “Roslyn Lodge is not accepting new residents at this time.”

All
Smiles
It’s all smiles at Canungra Dental. After 43 years of service to the community Dr Robert Smith is happy to be handing over the dental clinic to a wonderful young family. Dr Dallin Leneham and his wife Alanna have recently taken ownership of the clinic and couldn’t be happier. Dr Dallin was keen to work in a rural setting after living and working in Goondiwindi. So when he heard Dr Robert was retiring he jumped at the chance to work in the township of Canungra. “My wife grew up around here so we were already familiar with how beautiful Canungra and its people are. We just couldn’t pass up such a good opportunity,” said Dallin. Dallin loves working in a smaller town and is excited to really get to know his patients. “In the bigger cities and with dental corporations, patients can become just a number but I like to make sure I know all my patients and their needs. It’s more personal that way,” he said. Canungra Dental will re-open its doors on 27th February, boasting a new clinic equipped and ready to go with happy gas, invisalign, new software and digital technology.

“We are so excited to bring new services to the people of Canungra, along with the equipment upgrade we will be able to provide a broader range of services including implants, invisalign and happy gas,” said Dallin. animals. He is often caught having a great laugh whenever he sees his smaller patients and hopes to be able to put a smile on their faces. “Creating an environment where my patients feel at ease and as calm as possible is important to me. I just want to take away the fear of dentistry so people are able to leave with a positive experience” he said.
Scenic Rim Road Network Expands Scenic Rim’s official road network is set to grow by more than six kilometres with five sections of unsealed road to be added to the local Roads Asset Register. Council is currently responsible for a regional road network spanning more than 1800 kilometres, including 800-plus kilometres of gravel road. Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Virginia West said Council’s Provision of Road Network Policy allowed Council to add road extensions or new sections of road onto its Roads Asset Register for the purposes of control and maintenance. “This most often occurs when new roads are created as part of a residential sub-division. “There are, however, instances where sections of unsealed road have not been recognised on Council’s Roads Asset Register. In most cases, it is an historic oversight dating back many years. “Council is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of road assets across the Scenic Rim and, as part of this process, identified a number of previously unresolved road ownership issues.” “Addressing these issues allows Council to formalise its ownership and take on responsibility for ongoing maintenance. This outcome forms part of our commitment to providing an Accessible and Serviced Region to our community.” Council has resolved to add the following routes to its Roads Register: • 610-metre section of track known as Blanks Rd at Running Creek • 180-metre service track off Boonah-Fassifern Rd at Fassifern • 960-metre section of formed track beyond Flying Fox Rd at Ferny Glen • 2850-metre section of formed track beyond Brennan Rd at Allenview • 1430-metre section of track comprising Armstrong Rd at Biddaddaba (inclusive of a section known as Cawley Lane West).
Swimming Season Extended Scenic Rim’s annual swimming season at public pools has been extended by a fortnight as a result of continuing hot weather conditions. The swimming season would normally conclude on 31st March but extended operating hours has been scheduled for the benefit of local patrons. The season will continue over the Easter school holidays, concluding the day prior to the Good Friday public holiday (14th April). Revised operating hours for 1st to 13th April are as follows: Beaudesert: • Monday - Friday 6am-10am • Saturday 12pm-4pm, Sunday 12pm-4pm Boonah: • Monday - Friday 6am-10am Canungra: • Monday - Friday 6am-10am & 2pm-6pm • Saturday 8am-5pm, Sunday10am -4pm Tamborine Mountain: • Monday - Friday 6am-6pm • Saturday 8am-5pm, Sunday 10am-4pm.

This year one of Canungra’s landmark buildings, the Canungra Hotel, is celebrating its 80th year. The Kidston Street site of the Hotel was originally occupied by a guesthouse named ‘Bellissima’. Built by Romeo Lahey in 1916 to plans drawn up by J H Burley, ‘Bellissima’ was named after the ship that brought the Lahey family to Sydney from Ireland in 1861. This unlicensed two-storey guesthouse had its own electricity plant, a water and septic system and was considered one of the finest hotels in Queensland. Over the years, many visiting dignitaries were accommodated there, including the State Governor and the Premier. A feature of the dining room was a huge table made from a single slab of rosewood. The guesthouse was operated by the Lahey firm until 1927, when it was taken over by David Lahey, who sold it to Bernard William Conaghan. Mr Conaghan renamed it the ‘Canungra Hotel’ and was granted a licence in 1928, making it the first licensed premises in Canungra. After the hotel was licensed, a bar was built on the eastern side of the building, with a billiard room next to the bar. The Conaghans left in 1934 and Mrs Cronin became licensee, followed by Cyril Aylemore in 1937. Unfortunately, the beautiful old wooden building was destroyed by fire on Friday 22nd January 1937. At that time the building was owned by Mr Shaw of Sydney, who then rebuilt it in its present form. The new hotel bar was opened for the first time by Mrs Keating and daughters, the new licensees on Thursday 9th October 1937. In the war years Mrs Earl was in charge of the hotel, followed by the Jorms, then A D and A F Johnston. As befits a building with nearly a century of history, the hotel is reputed to host a couple of resident ghosts. It has also featured in a Hollywood film, Today the Canungra Hotel is owned by Walsh and Associates and is a landmark of the town, popular with locals and tourists alike.

No Local Treatment for Lyme
Beechmont resident, Rachel Allen, has been living with Lyme disease for more than five years. Her symptoms include chronic migraine, chronic fatigue, flu-like symptoms, insomnia and joint pain. After receiving multiple paralysis tick bites, Rachel’s life changed overnight. She became ill in late 2011, and after years of misdiagnosis, she was finally clinically diagnosed with Lyme, or a ‘Lyme-like illness’. Her blood was sent overseas to Germany to confirm the diagnosis, but by this stage the disease had taken hold. Chronic late stage Lyme is hard to treat. The multiple strains of bacteria set deep into the brain, liver, spleen, heart, bones, blood, joints, and form bio-films, making them hard to kill. Inflammation and strain on the immune system can bring back previous illnesses such as glandular fever. Some people refer to the illness as MSIDS (Multi-Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome) primarily to get away from using the term ‘Lyme disease’, and it is a clearer descriptor of the multiple illnesses occurring at one time, namely bacteria, parasites, fungus and viral infections. This illness is complex. A clinic in Cyprus, Y & C Medical Institute, is offering an intensive four week treatment plan for Lyme patients. The clinic has become flooded with Australian Lyme sufferers, and is currently booked out until late in 2017. The demand from tick-affected Australians has become so high that two more clinics have opened. Rachel is hoping to head over there later this year. So why are Australians are having to go overseas for treatment? There is alot of controversy within Australia’s medical authorities as to whether the illness exists here, yet there are thousands of sufferers with symptoms and positive blood tests (from overseas testing) after receiving tick bites. The denial of Lyme disease by medical arises from a 1994 government funded research project that failed to detect Borrelia burgdoferi (the common North American strain) in Australian ticks. Other research conducted in Australia has conflicted with this finding. A recent senate inquiry report on the Lyme Disease recommended the Australian Government increase funding for research into tick-borne pathogens as a matter of urgency. This funding should include: • funding for research on pathogens which may cause infection; • funding for research on whether newly-identified pathogens can cause illness in humans; and • funding for the development of diagnostic tests which can detect infection by any newly-identified pathogens endemic to Australia. To find out more about Lyme disease in Australia, visit the Lyme Disease Association of Australia website: www.lymedisease.org.au. To help Rachel get the treatment she needs, visit her fundraising page: www. gofundme.com/rachels-treatment-for-lyme-disease.

Health Information Sessions From autism to Alzheimer’s, information about a range of health and social issues affecting community members of all ages will be presented in a series of 10-minute talks at Council’s Savvy Scenic Rim sessions during March. The free events will be held at Tamborine Mountain, Boonah and Beaudesert, with information stalls and guest speakers providing the latest information on autism, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, immunisation and oral and kidney health as well as elder abuse and how not to fall victim to fraud and scams. Mayor Greg Christensen said the Savvy Scenic Rim sessions were a mine of information, addressing issues confronting many members of the community. “The Understanding Autism presentation, for instance, provides a brief overview of the typical challenges faced by people with autism and their families and covers strategies to help carers and others in their wider circle,” he said. “In recent times there has been an increase in the incidence of autism and changes to the way it is diagnosed, so here’s an opportunity to tap into some of some of the most-up-to date information.” “The information segment on dementia looks at reducing the risks of developing this condition and how to differentiate between memory concerns related to aging and those associated with dementia, as well as the range of support services available.” The information sessions with giveaways, morning tea and information stalls will be held from 9.30am to 12pm on the following days and locations: • Wednesday 15th March, Zamia Theatre, Tamborine Mountain • Thursday 16th March at the Boonah Cultural Centre, and • Tuesday 21st March at The Centre Beaudesert.
Free Trees for Community Groups
Applications for the 2017 round of Council’s Community Trees Initiative are now open to community groups across the Scenic Rim. The Initiative provides community groups, social clubs, sporting associations and school groups with the opportunity to do something positive for the environment by planting trees in their local area. “Council supports this program which has seen more than 25,000 trees planted across the Scenic Rim and provides community groups with any number of free trees to be planted as a project or event for improved ecological outcomes,” Mayor Greg Christensen said. “Once established trees can assist in addressing land management issues such as stream bank stability, soil salinity, land degradation and erosion, while providing environmental outcomes such as improved water quality, wildlife corridors and improved soils.” The Community Trees Initiative is a sub-program of the Million Trees Program, Council’s ambitious commitment to see one million native trees planted across the region by 2025. “Community groups of all sizes are encouraged to get involved in this program not only to beautify the region, but to learn about the natural environment that makes up our picturesque region.” For information or to apply for the Community Trees Initiative visit Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au to download a factsheet and application form. Alternately call Council’s Environmental Policy and Services team on 5540 5111. Applications close Friday 17th March 2017.

Matt Carves a Name for Himself
Turning Pink Again!
The Canungra Chamber of Commerce is again seeking events for Turning Canungra Pink to take place in October 2017. This year organisers are hoping to have a longer lead time to generate more media attention and awareness of the event within the town, and to create a calendar of events for the month. To this end, anyone interested in running an event is asked to submit an expression of interest by 15th August 2017. If you are interested in running an event, raffle, competition or helping to raise funds and awareness for cancer, please contact Keer Moriarty on 0407 671 286 or email news@canungratimes.com.au with the subject line ‘Turning Canungra Pink’. Last year, Turning Canungra Pink raised over $20,000 for the Cancer Council Queensland which supports research and cancer patients.
The 2017 Australian Chainsaw Carving Championship held in Dandenong, Victoria, drew competitors from around the world, including well known local carver, Matt Bird. Now in it’s fourth year, the event showcases the work of the top 10 carvers from Canada, USA, Czech Republic and Japan, as well as the best talent from Australia. Matt travelled to Victoria in January to take part, carving an impressive sculpture of eagles, echidna and a goanna from a huge piece of Cyprees Pine during the five day long competition. “I didn’t get on the podium this year at the championships but just being selected in the top 10 in the world is pretty good,” said Matt. “I had a great time and sold my Matt Bird at the Australian Chainsaw Carving piece straight away.” Championships in Dandenong, Victoria Locally Matt has sculptures at Canungra Bowls Club, Canungra Showground and was recently commissioned to do a sculpture on a property just outside Canungra. Matt is a regular at the Canungra Show and has been featured in the Open Studios at Wallaby Ridge Retreat in the past.

Being Connected The thing with living and working in a small town is you get to know people. You know the people who live near you, the people you see in the street, the ones who run businesses and even the people who walk their dogs (if, like me, you are a dog walker)! Knowing all these people means you are connected to them. When someone passes away, you feel it, when someone leaves town, you feel it, and when someone is in trouble, the town rallies behind them. We saw this last month when one of our locals who has been unwell and needed a bit of help. Emma is not one to ask for anything but she is lucky to have some good friends who have shown great love and enthusiasm for her and the town has rallied around to do what they can. It is these times that make me very proud to live where I do. Our local dentist, Robert Smith, retired at the end of February. Robert has been a mainstay of the town for many years and he is happily heading into retirement with the surgery now in the hands of a lovely young family - dentist Dallin Leneham and his wife, Alanna. They have already been busy getting to know the locals via the Canungra Markets and the dental surgery. Robert probably would have liked to have retired a few years ago but he has kept the surgery open to ensure this service was not lost to the town. I wish Robert and his wife Margaret all the best for their retirement - I’m sure they are leaving the business in very good hands.
Police would like to speak to a group of five teenagers who were approached by a person at the Canungra Showgrounds swimming hole on the afternoon of Saturday 18th February 2017. Canungra Police Sergeant, Craig Roberts, said parents can contact him or any of the officers at Canungra Police Station on 5543 5120 if their children were amongst those approached. Craig said it is important that parents talk to their children and are aware of what is happening. He said children of all ages need to be aware of their personal safety and the steps to take if they are approached by a person they do not know. “If a child is approached, they should go to the nearest safe place - a shop or somewhere that they know there is a safe adult - and advise an adult of what has happened and ask them to contact their parents and the police,” said Craig. “It is vital that parents report any incidents to the police.” “We have received information that there have been Facebook posts regarding an incident at the swimming hole at the Showgrounds, but we can’t act on a Facebook post,” he said, “Parents need to talk to their children and if there are things that need to be reported, they should contact us as soon as possible.” personal safety tips for children
The Queensland Police web site says parents should talk to their children about developing a ‘Safety Network’ of trusted adults who will listen to them, believe them and help them if they need help. Ideally, a child’s network should consist of at least five trusted adults chosen by them who are available, supportive, trustworthy and willing to listen. Children should also be aware of the following personal safety tips: • Make sure your parents or another adult knows where you are at all times. • Always walk straight to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets or use paths where there are lots of people. • Know where safe places are — a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, go to one of these places and ask them to call the police. • Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help — police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust. • Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop. • If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared. If someone tries to grab you, yell out, ‘Go away, I don’t know you’. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t know.

Community Bank Hitting the Targets!
Canungra & District Community Bank staff and directors were celebrating after learning they were Bendigo’s Branch of the Month for Brisbane Region in December 2016. It was the Branch’s first win, but in only their third month in business it was a reflection of the success of the Branch in the short time it has been open. The Canungra team achieved the following results in December: • Exceeded Lending Growth budget. • Exceeded Deposit Growth budget • Eight Insurance Policies • 36 New Accounts Branch Manager, Vanessa Skinner said the Branch opened with just over $16 million in total holdings – combined deposit and loan accounts. “We have had exceptional growth, we’re currently at $30 million, with almost equal amounts in lending and deposits,” said Vanessa. The Branch opened with 280 customers which has increased to 381 at present, including individuals, businesses and community organisations who have supported the Branch. “Some of success has been due to the uptake of the Bendigo Bank School Banking Program which the Canungra State School is participating in. For every student account opened, the Community Bank donates funds back to the school,” said Vanessa. “We had a great month in December for insurance sales, which helped us achieve Branch of the Month,” she said.
Canungra & District Community Bank staff Rachel Mathers, Vanessa Skinner, Natasha Miller and Candice Wright proudly display their Branch of the Month trophy

Makeover For Mobile Library
Scenic Rim’s popular mobile library service has returned from its summer break sporting a whole new look. Council’s mobile library visits the communities of Beechmont, Tamborine, Kooralbyn, Rathdowney, Hillview, Kalbar, Harrisville and Peak Crossing providing local access to library services to these residents. At most locations an all day service is available to facilitate easy access (includes wheelchair access) “In addition to providing an important means of connecting our smaller communities to Council library services, the mobile library is effectively a semi-trailer sized moving billboard promoting the Scenic Rim,” Mayor Greg Christensen said. “As a region, we want to put our best foot forward so Council gave the mobile library a holiday facelift over the summer.” The trailer’s ageing blue colour scheme has been replaced by a Mayor Greg Christensen checks out the new livery on the Scenic Rim Mobile Library trailer. palette of bold green incorporating panoramic images of the Scenic Rim landscape. “It’s really a case of a brand-new look, but same great service. It will be hard to miss out on the road,” Cr Christensen said. Cr Christensen said the mobile library carried over 6000 items from the regional library collection including fiction, non-fiction, large print and talking books, magazines, junior and young adult reading, as well as audio-visual resources such as CDs and DVDs. “It’s also equipped with public access computers allowing users to access the library catalogue, internet and e-resources. Free WiFi is also provided for people with their own devices,” he said.

Relief from back Pain = Pilates A Local Resident for 20 Years
BEST PRICE GUARANTEED WITH LOCAL AND MOUNTAIN OFFICES BY APPOINTMENT
Do you suffer from back pain? There can be a variety of reasons for the back pain – lumbar muscle strain, bulging discs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, lumbar spine arthritis, spondylolisthesis, osteoporosis. If there is an onset of pain in your lower back, for whatever reason, your muscles change. When muscles change in size and make up they become weaker, which is why it may be difficult to perform simple tasks like getting up from a chair, bending over or lifting. Rest, ice, heat, exercises, medications, and other treatments may all be useful in relieving your symptoms. Once the initial pain subsides, exercise that helps strengthen weak muscles, stretch tight muscles and generally strengthen the core stabilising muscles of the body will help to reduce or remove the pain and assist with prevention of re-injury. There are two Pilates classes offered in Canungra at Moriarty Park Hall: • Monday – 6:30 to 7:30 pm Men’s Back Health (women are also encouraged) • Tuesday – 5:30 to 6:30 pm Family Pilates If you would like to attend and cannot make these classes, please contact Alanna on 0409 752 997 and express your interest and additional classes will be scheduled accordingly. Pilates will help you to correct your posture, to develop your core strength, will increase your flexibility and balance and will increase your body awareness. It significantly improves your ability to carry out everyday tasks without pain. Do something for your health – join a Pilates class!

This historic event for Queensland and the Scenic Rim was remembered over the weekend of 18th and 19th February at a number of significant places, with walks to the Stinson crash site, Westray’s grave and a commemoration ceremony at Christmas Creek Recreation Centre. It was heartening to have all generations telling their stories and memories of the event which directly touched residents in the Biddaddaba, Kerry, Lamington and Christmas Creek valleys, with men answering the call to join the search parties and women carrying on the farming and household duties at home. A number of Replica Stinson Plane on the lawn beside O’Reilly’s Guesthouse books have been written about this event which you will find in our libraries and at the Canungra Information Centre.

By Melissa Whitby Last year I travelled to a remote section of the Tasmanian wilderness known as Melaleuca in South-west National Park to see the critically endangered Orangebellied Parrot. As well as seeing the Orange-bellied Parrot, I also encountered other bird species. One such bird was the Beautiful Firetail. This colourful finch is easily recognised by its red bill, red rump and finely barred breast. Juvenile birds are duller in colour and lack the red bill. In flight, the red rump of this small bird is very evident. In Tasmania, no other bird species is similar to the Beautiful Firetail which makes identification of the species easier for birdwatchers. Beautiful Firetails can also be located on mainland Australia in coastal areas of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. In these mainland areas, Red-browed Finch are a similar species, however, Beautiful Firetails are darker in colour on the head, back and breast. Beautiful Firetails were relatively common at Melaleuca and very easy to see. These small birds have learnt the art of gaining a free meal from the feed stations set-up for the Orange-bellied Parrots. Usually, I have seen the birds in pairs or small groups and when foraging on the ground they are never far from cover. The habitat of the birds at Melaleuca was predominately dense vegetation such as heath and paperbarks near creeklines. I have also observed Beautiful Firetails on Bruny Island and this species appears to be relatively common in Tasmania. Overall, the Beautiful Firetail is well worth looking for if you are within its range in the southern states of Australia. As mentioned, the best views I had of this bird were at Melaleuca and as the birds can be viewed from bird hides, I was able to get some amazing photographs. Melaleuca is a birding heaven for birdwatchers and I totally recommend taking the time and effort to get to this extraordinary place to experience its many natural wonders.
Bluey - Male, Australian Kelpie , 9 years (ID: 116396) Cost: $150 You know how they say the fastest way to a dogs heart is through their tummy, well in Bluey’s case the way
to his heart is with the throw of a tennis ball. Bluey will wow you with his jumping ability as you bounce the ball high up in the air for him to catch. While he is definitely a high flyer, catching the ball still needs to be perfected. After a few throws of the ball Bluey will happily come over for a good scratch behind both ears and trust me he will be putty in your hands. Bluey has a real zest for life and is always ready to get out for a walk where he can explore with his nose to the ground. Bluey loves spending time with his humans and he will make any lucky person or family a loyal and devoted companion. Come and meet our Bluey today!! Jazzie - Domestic Medium Hair - Black. New App for the Garden
Agathia prasinaspis. Photo: Lesley Hutley and Geoff Monteith
Agathia prasinaspis By Susan Cully This beautiful moth is Agathia prasinaspis. It occurs in New Guinea and in Australia from Atherton Tableland down to northern New South Wales. The story of this beautiful nocturnal, rainforest moth is about the larvae, the looper caterpillars. Sometimes known as inchworms, looper caterpillars are deprived of the usual complement of 10 prolegs issued to its caterpillar cousins. They are not able to do the ‘caterpillar crawl’ but must clasp at the front with true feet and, then dragging with their false feet at the back, they draw up to the front feet, thus ‘looping’ the body as it meets their front feet. If startled, the caterpillar, covered in camouflage-style, woody markings, stands upright on its false feet, mimicking a twig. In this way it blends in with its forest habitat and eludes its predators. This looping gait has been perceived by observers as an act of measuring the surface they traverse, giving rise to their family name: “Geometridae”. Geometra derives from the Latin word meaning “earth measurer”, literally: earth (geo..) measurer (metri..) The story of moths in general includes their vital role in pollination and as a source of food for birds and bats. A key role of moths in forest and woodland is in the breakdown of leaf litter. Moth larvae are particularly important in digesting the tough residues derived from eucalypts and other Australian flora, thus reducing the fuel load and the damage from bushfires, and in facilitating nutrient recycling. (John Landy AC MBE, Guide to Australian Moths) The picture above is known to many people, locally and at large, for its use by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service in publications about the Lamington National Park.
Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch joined a Gold Coast business to launch a new gardening app that will have benefits beyond the backyard. The GroNative app, a collaborative effort by Natura Pacific and Griffith University’s Doctor Rochelle Steven, has been developed with assistance from State Government ‘Advance Queensland’ funding. “This app will help gardeners select native plants appropriate for local south east Queensland conditions. It will also have environmental and ecological benefits by helping to reduce water usage through better plant selection and reduced chances of weeds spreading,” Ms Enoch said. The GroNATIVE app includes profiles of over 400 plants native to South East Queensland, from bottle trees to booyongs. “The app informs gardeners about what plants grow best in their area according to soil type and local micro-climate, and this means plants will be appropriate to that local environment, providing invaluable habitat for native birds and other local species,” she said. Natura Pacific received $22,550 from the Advance Queensland Knowledge Transfer Partnerships program, enabling them to work with PhD student, now Doctor, Rochelle Steven, to develop the app content. “The program enables small to medium sized businesses to take on an Honours, Masters or PhD graduate to work with them on a specific project focused on innovation and business growth and which will return a benefit to all Queenslanders,” Ms Enoch said. Griffith University Vice Chancellor Professor Ian O’Connor said the collaboration between Griffith and Natura Pacific represented the core of 21st century thinking. “This app demonstrates the creative application of the latest technology to one of the most fundamental and enduring human past-times,” Professor O’Connor said. Professor Catherine Pickering from Griffith University’s Environmental Futures Research Institute said besides the aesthetic value the app offered, it was also important as an environmental tool. “If people start using the app to plant native plants that will contribute enormously to the establishment of valuable habitat and corridors for local native wildlife at a time when some species are under threat from urbanisation and climate change,” Professor Pickering said. “It will also reduce the risk of garden plants becoming environmental weeds, which can impact not only in residential areas, but also pose significant problems for national parks and wildlife reserves and to agricultural lands,” she said.

This is a time of contemplation. The Sun is passing through fellow water sign Pisces, giving you access to the full range of your emotions. At the same time, life is focussing you on philosophic matters. Travel may be involved, if you imagine it may help to deepen your understanding.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Expand carefully. Businesses that expand too quickly run the risk of rapidly getting out of balance and falling over. The Piscean Sun is prompting you to increase your sense of possibility. Saturn in Sagittarius is present to make sure you do so realistically. Put them both together.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough The AGM is over and our close-knit team is now putting together the finishing touches for the annual Car Boot Sale, which is to be held on Saturday 11th March. Have you seen advertising for this event in your letterbox, on the various noticeboards or heard about it verbally? It doesn’t matter how you have become aware of the Car Boot Sale, I encourage you to come along and enjoy a Saturday morning of friendship, bargain hunting, food and fun. St Luke’s will open the gates by 7.00am, so be early. Apart from each stall holder selling their wares, we will have a well-stocked cake and produce stall, a sausage sizzle, soft drinks, and Devonshire Tea. Our Easter raffle will give you the chance to win locally produced prizes and the whole activity will allow you to come to St Luke’s for a look inside the 80 year old building. St George’s Tamborine Anglican Church will fill the church with second hand books, so what are you waiting for? We pray for a successful event so we can go ahead and paint St Luke’s and erect a new front fence. It will be giving new life to our historic building. Do you feel like you need something to renew yourself? Maybe a holiday, a makeover, a new hair style or something more. St Luke’s can offer you a new sense of self. Simply come along on a Sunday morning and feel relaxed, free of worry, a cuppa and welcomed by friends. Why not start with a visit to the Car Boot Sale on Saturday 11th March?

Our Sportsperson of the Year Awards ceremony was a great night with many very impressive nominees. A highlight was having World Champion Hang Glider, Jonny Durand, as guest speaker, and I would like to thank Ken Hill for organising for that, and Jonny for taking time from his busy schedule to join us. Jonny was a recipient of the Moriarty Park Sportsperson of the Year Award in 2005. Jonny is also leading the world rankings at the moment and heading to Brazil in August...will try to keep you updated on his progress in this space! Soccer season is upon us again and a dedicated small committee are looking good to achieve another great year for Canungra Owls. Please support our local teams when you can ! A Saint Patrick’s Day Trivia Night will be held on 17th March at 7pm at Moriarty Park! Stu Comley will be setting and reading the questions as he is a master of this, and Bren will hold a raffle needless to say!! This will be a fundraiser for Moriarty Park and you are invited to book a table for $10. Prizes supplied by Tony and Anne from Foodworks; drinks available (with a green tint) and wearing something of Irish origin, green or orange would be appreciated!! Children are welcome but must stay upstairs at Moriarty Park and not outside on fields as other activities are happening there. Enquiries to Bren on 0414 435 919 or email bren. dalby@bigpond.com. Moriarty Park meetings are the third Tuesday each month at 7pm at Moriarty Park hall. All welcome!

Interclub Swim Meet A Huge Success
Melissa Messina and Shana Geiger
Canungra Social Swim Club (CSSC) hosted its first inter-club swim meet at Canungra Pool on Saturday 4th February 2017. Boonah and Rathdowney Swimming Clubs brought around 40 children between them to participate in the event. It kicked off at 3.30pm with a warm up and the races following at 4pm. Children from the age of four through to adults over 30 participated and enjoyed racing against local competition. Organisers would like to thank all the businesses in Canungra who provided prizes and vouchers for event. Supporters included Scenic Rim Regional Council, Canungra Hotel, Canungra Beauty & Acupuncture, Ginger Ninja Sushi, Feelin’ Groovy Therapies, Canungra Hub, Canungra Pizza, The Blue House, Bean In, Foodworks and Rackley Swimming Pools. CSSC arranged for a coffee van and provided a BBQ for the patrons on the night. Funds raised will support CSSC’s purchase of trophies and medals for presentation night. Ribbons were handed out with gusto and the children really enjoyed racing to win. But when all is said and done, the event was all about participation and was a hugely successful community event. For more information about the Canungra Social Swim Club, please call Amanda on 0409 114 832.

The Canungra Times - March 2017
Sport
The 2017 soccer season starts mid-March and we can’t wait! This year we have 11 teams taking the field. There are children as young as five wearing the green and gold for the first time and a couple of 40 years olds deciding to give it a go in 2017 as well. It is pleasing to see so many faces return to the club for another season of our beloved sport. We would like to thank those new volunteers who have stepped up to coach and manage our teams and we kindly and sincerely welcome back those volunteers who have returned from previous seasons to help us Owl this season. We really do appreciate your willingness to commit your precious time to those who can benefit the most: the children of our community. This year we are fortunate enough to welcome back our Senior Women’s team after two years of being in limbo (due to Football Gold Coast’s regulations). Good luck for the 2017 season ladies! We would like to give a very special thank you to the Canungra Op Shop. You have been very generous in kitting out the ladies in a new playing strip for the season. The Canungra Op Shop are also funding new jerseys for our young ladies, who have been registered as an U15 team. We have applied to have our home fixtures structured so that most teams play at home on the same day each fortnight. This not only benefits the parents and children of the club not having to travel, but also benefits the local business community with increased traffic in the area every second Saturday. We are hoping to work with local businesses this year to make the most of this increased trading opportunity. So if you are a local trader and you haven’t heard from the club yet, expect it soon! There are still vacancies on the Club Committee for a Vice-President and a Canteen Coordinator. If you are interested in either of these volunteer positions, contact the club. Registrations for the 2017 season are now closed and most age groups are full. But, if you do have a child, or an adult, stamping their feet demanding to be afforded their football playing rights for 2017, please contact the club. We look forward to a great season – please keep up-to-date with what is happening with the Owls, by following us on Facebook, or checking our webpage regularly. Hoot hoot!

Brothers
Local Canungra brothers Josh and Cameron Torrens have taken out gold at the recent International Federation of Muaythai Amateur Australian titles on the Gold Coast. With over 80 competitors packing the Tallebudgera recreational centre on 17th 19th February, the atmosphere was buzzing. For Josh this is not a new feeling, being the fourth year in a row to bring home the gold. However with the competition getting stronger the training is getting more intense. Cameron stepped up his game this year to also bring home gold. Fighting in seniors now he certainly had to work through lots of blood, sweat and tears but in the end his efforts paid off. Their sister Samantha had a tough job to secure a bronze medal this year, however due to injury in her second fight was forced to pull out. Both Josh and Cameron will now be given the opportunity to travel overseas and fight for their country in the IFMA World Titles, with the seniors being held in Belarus and the juniors in Thailand. The boys have been lucky enough to have this opportunity before and have brought home two silver for Josh and a silver and bronze for Cameron against the world. Cameron also holds the World Associaton of Kickboxing Organisaton (WAKO) Australian title and a bronze in the world, and now has his eyes set on his upcoming

Josh currently holds an international challenger title which he won against a tough New Zealand fighter and has his sights set on his upcoming Siam Cup Australian title.
