Australian Forces gather to march at Canungra on Anzac Day. Photo: Kim McMaster
By Keith Cogzell An estimated 2,800 people turned out to watch the Anzac Day march led by serving members from Kokoda Barracks. The tri-service contingent of 150 troops in Army, Navy and Air Force uniforms added military precision to Canungra’s biggest march in decades. Almost 60 veterans, ex servicemen and women and supporters marching under the RSL banner followed the Pipe and Drum band up Christie Street with rural fire brigade, emergency services and SES personnel behind in uniform. Canungra School students, Scouts and Guides brought up the rear ahead of five
mounted riders from Valley View Equine Group, reminiscent of years past when the Light Horse were a regular feature of Canungra’s Anzac march. DJ Smith Park was packed with onlookers for the morning Service. Many people watched from the surrounding streets and verandas of nearby local businesses. Lieutenant Colonel Arran Hassell of the Defence Force School of Intelligence gave a stirring keynote address centered on the courage, sacrifice and leadership of three individual Australians in three different wars. His address illustrated the fact that the courage and valor of the original Anzacs continues to this day.
Your lifestyle counts!
A special wreath was laid by Canungra RSL veteran, Hylton Frugtniet, in remembrance of the 18 local men who were killed in action on Gallipoli and the Western Front. Simultaneously, at the Dawn Service in Villers-Bretonneux France, Canungra Sub Branch member Norm Kelly also laid a wreath for Canungra’s fallen and placed poppies from home on graves and memorials. Veteran Bugler, T D Hunt, delivered a reverent Last Post and Rouse marking his retirement after distinguished service to the community for many years. continued page 10

Looking For Some TLC ... Canungra Township - Offers Considered
This 3 bedroom split level, timber home is situated in a prime location in the heart of Canungra on 1619m2.
In its day, this would have been a prestige home, and is ideal for someone wanting to renovate and bring her back to her former glory. New carpets and a coat of paint would do wonders. The spacious lounge has a combustion heater - great for the cooler weather; off the lounge is an internal bar and plenty of room for a billiard table. A step up takes you into the kitchen and dining area and bathroom. The bedrooms are away from the living area, and 2 have built-ins. Downstairs is plenty of covered area for storage and a carport, as well as the laundry and storeroom. The large shed is ideal for the handyman/tradesperson to house their equipment. The home is tenanted and 24hrs notice is required to inspect. The Canungra Times’ 10th Birthday Edition - May 2005 - May 2015

SIDS and Kids Fundraising By Laura Quinn I would like to thank everyone who donated to the SIDS and Kids appeal in honour of six month old Rilley who passed away on 24th February 2015. During March, donation tins and raffle tickets were displayed around Canungra and this appeal would not have been made possible without the help of the business that donated prizes: Songbirds, Hot Air Scenic Rim, Masala Shanti, Town and Country in Nerang, The Canungra Hotel, Canungra Pizza and Pasta, and a beautiful quilt donated by Robyn Mahoney. On 29th March we ran a sausage sizzle outside FoodWorks and a massive thanks to Tony and the staff for helping us put it together and also donating dollar for dollar in fundraising that day. The sausage sizzle saw us bring in $500 plus the donation from Foodworks rasing $1000. Cody-Rose Santorini, Laura Quinn, Yvette Morley, Paule Conclaves and Rod Morley. Inset: Jonathan and Raquel draw the SIDS and Kids raffle with Laura Quinn
In total we have been able to raise $2,859.90 what an amazing effort by all and in honour of Rilley.

Nathan Tinkler’s Patinack Farm Sold to Aquis Group
Nathan Tinkler’s thoroughbred racing and training establishment, Patinack Farm has been bought by Aquis Group in a multi-million dollar deal. The four properties, Wadham Park (33.64ha), Elysian Fields (56.97ha), Saravale (73.26ha) and Benobble (283.40ha) failed to sell at auction last October. Bids at the auction reached a total of $11.6 million but sources said Mr Tinkler was hoping for closer to $20 million. Mr Tinkler bought the properties for $21.05m in 2010 and reportedly spent another $7 million developing them into a training and breeding establishment. While a spokesman for Aquis Group said it is too early to release details of their plans for the site, he said they had several conversations with Scenic Rim Regional Council and are looking at a number of development options for the site. Aquis Group is wholly owned by Mr Tony Fung, a Hong Kong resident and private investment banker, financier and investor who has more than 15 years

experience as an active investor in Queensland. Aquis Group also own Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort near Cairns where they are planning to build a resort and casino. Aquis Group’s spokesman they hope to commence community consultation in the next few months, once they have had further discussions with Council.
Councillor Virginia West confirmed Council had met with the Group, saying the Aquis Group wanted any development to have minimal impact on the township itself. “They intend the development to add to the area and not to negatively impact on Canungra or its surrounding areas,” said Virginia.

Zest Fest Showcases Local Food, Arts and Music By Chloe Pickard
The Beechmont Zest Fest will be on new grounds this year as it reaches its fifth year anniversary. Zest Fest is part of the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Eat Local Week and showcases local food and drink, arts and crafts and music as well as sustainable living ideas. Organiser Wendi Trulson said the event would be a great day for those interested in new ways of being environmentally aware. “It’s about learning to lead a more sustainable lifestyle with people teaching you what you can do at home,” she said. “It’s a place for conversation, demonstration and sharing of knowledge.” Visitors will have the chance to see live blacksmithing and cheesemaking or be inspired to try something they may have never done such as aquaponics. The Lost Chords, the Will Miller Three and Gypsy will serenade the crowds, and community drumming group Drum Pulse will beat up a storm.
Wendi Trulson, Beechmont artist and Zest Fest organiser
Children can enjoy free activities such as creating masks, making music and mandala painting. Zest Fest is on Saturday 28th June from 9.30am until approximately 3.30pm

For any further matters relating to the Uniting Church call our Church Office on 5541 1018.
At this special time of the year, two words which come to mind are GRATEFULNESS and GRATITUDE. When you consider the importance of Easter, Anzac Day and Mother’s Day, all of which are at this time, we surely must think of and appreciate each event. Easter has been a time to reflect on God’s gifts to us-forgiveness, love, hope, faith and eternity. Anzac Day reminds us of the thousands of men and women who fought and died for our freedom and our futures. This year being the 100th anniversary of the ANZACS must remind us of how grateful we should be; and the importance of love and understanding. The attendance at the Dawn Service in D J Smith park followed by the march and commemoration of those who gave their lives for our peace and freedom was encouraging for the future of this nation. We should feel proud to be part of the Canungra community and be grateful to those who organised the wonderful services. Thank you. Mothers Day is a time to recognise not just those women who are mothers but all women, regardless of whether they have given birth to a child. All women demonstrate, loving, caring, nurturing and understanding. I encourage you to think of someone special and be grateful for their presence in your life. We are truly grateful for what we all receive.

Anzac Day 2015
continued from page 3

The Dawn service, which traditionally attracts 1200 people, broke all records with an estimated 1900 people paying their respects in the stillness of the early dawn. Colonel David Hafner of the Land Warfare Centre Canungra gave a poignant and fitting keynote address before laying a wreath on behalf of Kokoda Barracks to the stirring sounds of lone Piper Bren Dalby. Mr Cogzell thanked Joyce Libke and the QCWA for their tribute of 306 handmade poppies, one for each person listed on the Canungra Memorial. These were sewn onto backing and mounted onto the entry gates to DJ Smith Park in remembrance of those from our district who answered the call, many paying the ultimate sacrifice. Mr Cogzell said support from the community this year was exceptional with the Anzac Badges Appeal breaking all previous records. Donations and assistance from Canungra businesses exceeded expectations as they too helped create an event befitting the Anzac Centenary.

Lest We Forget Below: Members of the Military Motorcycle Club marched in Canungra. The Club is a Tri Service military motorcycle club comprising serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Commonwealth Forces members, their families, friends and support riders. These members decided to march in Canungra for the centenary as many of them either trained or served at Kokoda Barracks during their service. Although the Club is Australia-wide, this group travelled from Logan to attend the Canungra ceremony.
Camp Gallipoli
By Ashleigh Bartlett
Events that only happen once in a life time are always ones that are easily remembered and incredibly special experiences. Thanks to the Canungra RSL Sub Branch, I got to attend Camp Gallipoli, a special once in a life time event for the 2015 Anzac Day Centenary, with my best friend and brother, Bryce. Our sleeping area for the night was a space under the stars that wasn’t much bigger than our swags were, and we had to get our bags in with us too - we really were sleeping out like the soldiers at Gallipoli would have done. Once we had settled in, we enjoyed the night of entertainment that was offered from local artists including James Reyne, Christine Anu and the St Andrews Pipe Band, to moving, to educational encounters from Veterans and Victoria Cross recipients. We were awoken early in the morning by a bugle for the dawn service. I’ve been to plenty of dawn services in country towns and on Army bases, this was the first time I’ve experienced one in the city with as many people present, and it was a wonderful new experience for both of us. It was an experience that I will not forget.

Lest We Forget Seeking Portraits of our Living Heroes
There are over 14,000 World War II Veterans estimated to be living in Australia and they are invited to be photographed as part of one of the most ambitious photographic projects ever undertaken in Australia – to commemorate our unsung heroes of World War II in print. On completion, the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) project entitled Reflections: Honouring our World War II Veterans will provide a compelling pictorial record of returned servicemen and women living in Australia for the Australian War Memorial archives. Reinforcing the Anzac tradition, “We will remember them”, professional photographers across the country, accredited by the AIPP, are donating their time and talent in a unique community project. Any profit from the resale of photographs will be donated to Legacy and the RSL Foundation. AIPP Accredited Photographer, Vanessa Laverty said, “The AIPP wanted to honour veterans, whether from Australia or elsewhere, as living tributes to a time of heroism and nationalistic pride, by capturing and publishing their portraits in print. “What better time to capture our living heroes than now as we commemorate 100 years of the ANZAC tradition and the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII,” she said. “Letters and printed photographs meant absolutely everything to them back then, telling the story of their lives in their youth. It’s only fitting to contrast this with their senior years in the same way, in a timeless gift to them, their families and the nation.” “In this digital age when images can be lost in an instant, photographers know it’s the power of quality photographic prints that will live on, capturing a person, a moment in time and preserving it forever,” Vanessa Laverty said. AIPP have partnered with the Australian War Memorial and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) and all portraits will be gifted to the Australian War Memorial’s collection. Each veteran will receive a complimentary Kodak printed portrait in a presentation folder to commemorate their service given some 75 years ago. Anyone who served in World War II is encouraged to register for their free portrait at www.aippveterans.com or call AIPP on (03) 9888 4111. For more information on the AIPP Reflections project visit www.aipp.com.au/about/the-aippreflections-project or call AIPP on (03) 9888 4111.

(Notes for children and partners) Let her sleep in (if she wants to) - no matter how excited you are about getting the breakfast in bed to her, an early start is not part of the Mother’s Day rules of engagement. Let her get up if she wants to - if note 1 does not apply, do not get upset if she wants to get up - it’s about Mum, not you. If you are doing breakfast in bed, make it something easy to prepare and easy to carry. And easy to clean up (see note 4). Clean the kitchen before she gets up. Arts in the Olives
This is everyone’s invitation to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the Arts in the Olives Festival with this year’s event having a special “Poppies in the Grove” Anzac theme. Over the last eight years, Arts in the Olives has grown from strengh to strength and is now considered one of Queensland’s great festivals. This is the sixth year it has been planned for Mothers’ Day. A day in the picturesque Lost World Valley whether it be participating in workshops, looking at the artisan stalls or just strolling through the olive grove is the perfect treat for any mother on her special day. The Grove Gallery (the festival’s very own art gallery), arts markets, arts demonstrations and a full music programme will run alongside many gourmet food outlets under the cover of the beautifully shady olive trees. With the Anzac theme in mind, Therese FlynnClarke’s workshop will show participants how to make large sculptural poppies using wire, fabric and recycled materials which will then be placed in the grove. Amba Whatley in her workshop will be making poppies out of felt. Two of the six free children’s workshops will also include making poppies. The talented tutors who are from this area are Amba Whatley from Tamborine Mountain, Wendi Trulson from Beechmont (eco dyeing on paper) and Tamlyn Geiger from Canungra (portraiture and life drawing) . The workshops are filling fast so it would be wise not to delay to reserve your spot. The difficulty will be choosing which one is more appealing - bamboo flute making, blacksmithing, working with horn, portraiture, mosaic jewellery pendants, circus cupcake toppings, millefiori polyclay beads contemporary jewellery, aerosol and perspex artwork, eco dyeing, lino printing or wire sculpture. Check the website for full details as some of the workshops this year are available on Saturday 9th as well. Workshop prices for half day are $30 plus material costs. Bookings are essential and, as numbers are limited, it is recommended not to delay. Details of all workshops can be found on www.artsintheolives.com For workshop bookings, phone Erica 0417 720 352 and for general enquiries phone Chris 5541 4569 or Sue 5544 8104 or email artsintheolives@ gmail.com Entry : $7 per person, children under 5 are free. There is a family price of $25.

Police Seek Help with Break and Enter
Police are seeking assistance from the public in identifying four people involved in the break and enter of two businesses in the early hours of 20th April. At about 1.15am a stolen white hatchback (pictured) reversed into the front entry doors of Canungra FoodWorks, smashing the doors to gain entry. Four people dressed in black entered the store and, after ripping cabinet doors off left with an undisclosed amount of cigarettes, snack food and drink. At about 3.15am the same stolen hatchback reversed into a service station in Goodna smashing the windows. Police believe the same four people then entered the store, climbed over the counter and used bolt cutters to gain entry into a cupboard in the office. An undisclosed amount of money, cigarettes, food and drink was taken before the four fled in the stolen vehicle. They are all described as wearing black or dark blue hooded jumpers, black long trousers, black gloves and shoes. Three are also wearing black balaclavas and a fourth has their face covered with white material. At least three of the four appear to be Caucasian in appearance. Police are asking anyone with information which could assist with this matter to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.

Readers will get sick of hearing me harp on about road safety but I make no apologies and will continue until there is a real change in the behaviour of all drivers and riders. I say riders because there have been two fatal motorcycle accidents in the area over the past two weeks. Both single vehicle, and I’d suggest both speed related. That’s two men who haven’t gone home to their families after going out for a weekend social ride. Often motorcyclists complain about the inattention of car drivers, tell us how experienced and attentive they are and that if they go over the speed limit it’s only ever by a couple of k’s and that should be alright. I live in town. I hear, if not see, the bikes every weekend. They aren’t going “just a few k’s over”. Some of the speeds I’ve seen motorbikes doing on our roads are plain ridiculous. Experienced riders, riding within the posted speed limits and, most importantly within their abilities, do not crash. A majority of the hundreds of motorcyclists coming to Canungra each weekend do the right thing, ride within the limits and are mindful of other road users. To the small number who don’t, think about the promise you made to your family before you left home, that you’ll see them later. Go a bit slower getting home, enjoy the scenery, and if you want to test your skills go to the race track. We will not be able to provide Department of Transport services including driver licence testing or renewals until 1st June. Licence renewals can be done on-line at www.tmr. qld.gov.au, by attending the QGAP Office in Beaudesert or one of the Queensland Transport offices in the surrounding areas. Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Budget Discussions Commence
Each year, Council is faced with the challenging task of framing its Budget for the forthcoming year. As councillors we will spend many hours around the chamber table debating the merits of proposed expenditure on new initiatives and recurring programs, weighed against our financial constraints. This lengthy and, at times, difficult process has the important objective of funding the vital infrastructure and services needed by the growing Scenic Rim region and I look forward to working collaboratively with my colleagues to delivering a document which reflects the needs of the community. Over the past several years this Council, just like local households and businesses, has endeavoured to do more with less: reducing staff numbers from more than 400 post-amalgamation to less than 350 today, and delivering more cost-effective and efficient services. Our Budget in 2014/15 was almost $10 million less than the first budget of Council in 2008/09. At the same time we have sought to direct the dividends of savings and efficiencies into record investment in maintaining and improving our road and bridge network. In the past five years Council has increased spending on road infrastructure by more than 30%, while savings from organisational restructuring has been directed into our capital works program and new initiatives such as Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages. In addition, we have delivered an unprecedented disaster restoration program to repair infrastructure damaged by severe weather events in 2010/11, 2012 and 2013 under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. To date 6 new bridges have been completed and another 2 will be completed in the coming months, concrete bridges to replace our ageing timber structures. Even with the belt-tightening I have touched on, each year we ask the ratepayers of the Scenic Rim to contribute to the provision of Council services through an increase in their rates. I understand that local households continue to experience cost of living pressures and I can assure I am committed to delivering a budget outcome for 2015/16 which keeps any increase to fees and charges to a minimum. In addition to our commitment to capital works, Council also contributes to the social, economic and cultural fabric of the Scenic Rim through the funding of important initiatives such as the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages program, Eat Local Week, the Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim, Be Healthy & Active and the annual Business Excellence Awards. We also provide services essential services such as waste collection and disposal, community facilities including local libraries, cultural centres and halls, in addition to parks, gardens and reserves. Our commitment to achieve long-term sustainability and leave a positive legacy continues to be the cornerstone of our financial strategy and our performance has again been assessed favourably by both the Queensland Audit Office and the Queensland Treasury.
Open Studios At Canungra

Congratulations Canungra Times
This very informative local newspaper is celebrating 10 years of publication this month and what a wonderful asset it is to our community. Accolades must go to Tamlyn Geiger who launched the paper as the Pioneer Express, Stuart Comley who took over as editor for a number of years and Keer who has been the editor for the last three years. Each has brought their own unique flavour to a great local publication. However did we get the news and events out there before the paper.

Have Your Say!
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Has it really been that long? Sometime in 2008, I rang Stu Comley and asked if he had any work going with The Canungra Times. Seven years later, here I am finishing another paper. Did I think back then that I would be doing what I’m doing now? Um, no. Definitely not. But I am happy that I am. Stu started The Canungra Times in 2005, printing it on a copier at the Canungra Motel (he and his mother, Jean owned the Motel at the time as well as Possums Coffee Shop), collating it by hand and producing an A5 black and white publication every month with a green cover. He had quite a few helpers, one of his main supports then and now was his mother, Jean. Jean has done everything with the Times from accounts to taking photos and was the person who started the Canungra Calendar. I started in 2008 writing stories, taking photos, delivering and learning all aspects of the business. In 2012 I bought The Canungra Times from Stu and have loved every minute of it. I am very lucky to be doing something I enjoy and very grateful to the community, columnists, readers and advertisers for the support and assistance they give this paper. Stu always saw The Canungra Times as a community paper, a way of bringing the town together and letting people know what was going on. There are plenty of other media outlets who can give you news about Brisbane, the Gold Coast or even Beaudesert, but The Canungra Times is here for Canungra. Of course The Canungra Times wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the multitude of people who help writing articles, taking photos, sending in sports results or bringing in interesting bits and pieces about the town, its history and the people who live here. If I try to mention all these people it would fill a couple of pages - sadly some of them are no longer with us and their presence is sadly missed. Every piece of information that is sent in, every photo or snippet of news is appreciated and I am very grateful for the support of so many people in the creation of the paper each month. So thank you, Canungra, for your support, for picking up the paper each month and having a read and for emabracing your local paper as you have! Page 20
Congratulations to the Canungra Times on 10 years of service to the local community. For the past decade the Canungra Times has provided important coverage of local stories and events which are enjoyed by locals and travellers alike. Last year the Canungra Times provided extensive coverage of turning Canungra pink events (in support of the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day) – this coverage undoubtedly contributed to the success of these events and typifies the importance of local newspapers. Again congratulations to Editor Keer Moriarty and to all those that support this wonderful newspaper – I wish you all the best for the coming years. Jon Krause MP State Member for Beaudesert

Red Billabong Wraps Up in Town
With Clancy Beck
Eat Your Vegetables! “Eat your vegetables!” is something you’ve likely heard your whole life, since Mum tortured you with servings of brussels sprouts and cabbage. Now, it’s the medical experts who encourage you to add more veggies to your diet, advising between five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables per day for good health. So the token floret of broccoli once a day just doesn’t cut it - but have you wondered why we should eat so many vegetables? Vegetables are loaded with nutrients, vitamins and minerals that contribute to growth and good health. Various vitamins, such as C and A, help keep eyes, skin, teeth and gums healthy, fight infection and promote wound healing. Vegetables are also rich in antioxidants which fight free radicals, and may help prevent heart disease, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, hardening of the arteries, heart attack and Alzheimer’s disease. Vegetables are high in dietary fibre, which can help scour bad cholesterol out of your arteries, thus lowering your risk of heart disease. Fibre also keeps your digestive system running smoothly, helps control blood sugar levels and may help prevent cancer and diabetes. Trying to lose weight? Vegetables are a dieter’s best friend! Because they are generally low in fat and calories, you can eat a lot of them without gaining weight. If you substitute higher-calorie foods with vegetables, you’ll slash your calorie and fat intake, making weight management easier. The fibre in vegetables makes you feel fuller for a longer period, helping you eat less overall and aiding with weight loss or maintenance. Some vegetables are ‘healthier’ than others. Some health experts say that potatoes actually don’t count toward your daily recommended servings of vegetables. Instead, potatoes, and often corn as well, are starchy foods more like a grain serving than a vegetable serving. If you wonder how you can eat that many vegetables in a day, there are some easy ways. Add spinach to a smoothie, have a side salad with every meal, use crumbled cauliflower or zucchini ribbons instead of rice or pasta, have vegetable sticks and humus as a snack. Get munching on some veg and reap the rewards!
FITNESS AND WEIGHT LOSS
Wondering who the film crew was in Canungra during April? Supernatural missing persons story Red Billabong completed shooting in Canungra last month and is due for release in August this year. The action thriller is set in the Australian outback and follows two brothers played by Dan Ewing (Home and Away) and Tim Pocock (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), who find themselves stalked by a sinister supernatural being after their friends begin to go missing. The film’s supporting cast includes Jessica Green (Lightning Point) and Bruce Carter (Gods of Wheat Street), Sophie Don and John Reynolds. Red Billabong was financed using private investment from Sparke’s own company SparkeFilms, which he runs with his father Ian Sparke, an executive producer on the film and an AFI-nominated costume designer (Beneath Hill 60), as well as an in-demand military advisor (The Sapphires, The Railway Man). Shooting in Canungra included location shoots at Bennoble, Canungra FoodWorks and DJ Smith Park with some locals being filmed as extras.

After what felt like a very long, hot summer, it’s finally cooling down. But with that comes dry skin. Don’t get me wrong, I love winter, but I can do without the dry patches on my face. So this month, I’ll be giving you some tips to prevent and treat dry skin this winter. Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise - Yes, I said that three times. It’s the most important tip to preventing and treating dry skin. Apply straight after you shower, wash your hands, or cleanse your face, while your skin is still damp. Cleanse – Cleanse your face morning and night with a gentle cleansing cream designed not to strip your skin of its natural oils. Something with a jojoba or avocado oil base is good. Toner – Apply a mild, non-alcoholic toner to your skin to hydrate and tone. Exfoliate – Exfoliate a couple of times a week to remove dead skin cells and help stimulate circulation. This will leave the skin able to absorb the moisturiser more easily. Serum – A serum is a light, fast-absorbing liquid, which deeply penetrates the skin and delivers vitamins and antioxidants. Mask – Use a rich mask to quench thirsty, dry, and dehydrated skin. AHA Peel – Having a regular peel once a month helps to smooth and resurface the top skin layers and improve elasticity. Choose a gentle peel that won’t redden or irritate the skin. Food – Some foods are great at improving your skin. Coconut is rich in healthy fats that help your skin glow. Olives or olive oil is rich in Vitamin E. Avocado contains potassium, B Vitamins, Vitamin E, and protein. Oatmeal is great for treating dryness, and sweet potatoes are an amazing source of Vitamin A.

The survey found there was “not ... any reason why the Community Bank would not be successful in Canungra provided those respondents who indicated they would transfer their banking business do so.” Steering Committee Chair Janine Rockliff said she was thrilled to see Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch starting to become a reality and thanked the community for its ongoing support. “More than 250 people have already committed in excess of $710,000 in pledges to the project, and they will be able to follow through on that promise by buying shares in the new company,” she said. “The committee will now work to establish this company, which will govern the locally-operated Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch. “We also need to develop a legal prospectus and, all things going to plan, we hope to launch our public share offer by August” For further information about the proposed Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch, including how to support the project by transferring your banking prior to opening, contact Janine Rockliff on 0434 238 008.
Canungra residents have demonstrated the need for a Community Bank® by giving real support to the Canungra Bendigo Bank agency. The Agency opened in May 2014 as part of the campaign to bring banking back to Canungra. Agency Principal, Keer Moriarty said the Agency has been well supported by local residents, businesses and community organisations. “Even though the hours are limited, many people have taken the opportunity to use the Agency for day to day banking which supports the Community Bank campaign,” said Keer. “The success of the Agency also sends a message to Bendigo Bank that a Branch is needed in Canungra,” she said. “Many of our community organisations have seen the value of this, utilising the banking services as well as the mobile community EFTPOS service for sign on days.” “It has been a very busy year but I’m happy with the result. It shows that Canungra really does need a bank and I am looking forward to the day the Branch opens and starts to return profits to our community.” The Agency processes banking transactions such as deposits and withdrawals in real time and open accounts. It is supported by Springfield Branch and a mobile lending manager, Bob Stone who can assist customers with home loans as well as a range of business banking services. The agency is located at The Canungra Times office, 1/1 Lawton Lane and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9.30am – 2.30pm.

Dexter is a big loveable dope who loves being with people and finds a lot of comfort just hangin out with the family. He would suit an indoor lifestyle where he can be with the family and lounge around on a nice bed and would love a daily walk. Dexter is a four year old Weimaraner. This is a large breed of dog but they are very lovable and can be real lounge lizards (but do require some daily exercise). He is $350 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Add a bit of spice to your life with “Pepper”. Pepper is a four and a half year old blue and cream tortiseshell. She gets along with children, is tolerant of dogs and sociable with cats. She is more of an independent cat but is also happy to share her attentions with her human. She has been in a cattery and is fine staying in them. Pepper is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Please note that adoption fees are subject to change as they are currently subsidised through sponsorship by Von Bibra Motors. Check the web site or phone for updates.

Eyes to the Skies
The Glossy Black Conservancy is again seeking volunteers to help survey the local population of Glossy Black-Cockatoos on Sunday 3rd May. The Birding Day efforts rely heavily on the assistance of members of the public who have an interest in the Glossy Black-Cockatoo and its conservation. This is ‘citizen science’ at its best - where observations and records from the general public make an important contribution to furthering the understanding of the ecology of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo. Tracey Larkin from Mt Barney Lodge is the Coordinator for the Scenic Rim in 2015. She is keen to gather an army of volunteers who are able to assist with the survey. “In 2013 we had more than 50 volunteers and saw over 50 birds,” said Tracey, “Last year only eight people volunteered and our survey numbers dropped to four. Your individual help makes all the difference to the success of the survey.” The survey is conducted annually on a staggered schedule with survey dates alternating between May and October to take into account breeding activity. The objective is to gain a better understanding of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo distribution, habitat use and population demographics over time. The surveys provide the foundation for a long-term monitoring program that will be able to assess trends in the population. Residents can submit sightings of the species, or signs of their feeding activity, any day of the year using the on-line sightings tool. www. glossyblack.org.au/Submit_sightings.html If you think you could help out on the day, or if you would like more information, please contact Tracey on 5544 3233 or tracey@mtbarneylodge. com.au.
Nature’s Gems
Travel Diary 2014 - Albany, WA By Melissa Whitby My main two objectives for visiting Albany were to see a Malleefowl in the wild and to visit Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. My first stop was the Torndirrup National Park, just outside Albany. This beautiful national park protects an incredible array of coastal vegetation and one of the most dramatically beautiful coastlines I have ever seen. As always, I was on the hunt for anything that moved, especially if it had feathers. I was rewarded with close encounters with the Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo, Western Rosella and Red-capped Parrot. One of the best bird watching locations around Albany is Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. This was a location I had been wanting to visit for years as it was home to several endangered wildlife species such as the Noisy Scrubbird and Gilbert’s Potoroo. The Noisy Scrubbird is incredibly hard to see but I was able to locate one by its distinctive call. Other amazing bird encounters included seeing the Western Bristlebird and hearing the Western Whipbird. I would recommend taking several days to explore this reserve if you wish to encounter its incredible wildlife. My forays around Albany had not led me to an encounter with the bird that I had come to see: The Malleefowl. So, I decided to head north towards Ongerup (a known Malleefowl location) and the Stirling Ranges National Park. I decided to stay at the Stirling Range Retreat and I discovered that this was a great bird-watching location. At the Stirling Range Retreat, I had amazing views of the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, Elegant Parrot, Regent Parrot, Purple-crowned Lorikeets and an array of other incredible bird life. However, the major highlight was when I encountered the elusive Malleefowl scratching on his nest mound. This beautiful bird is one of the three megapode species in Australia, which builds a large nest mound to reproduce its young. Malleefowl numbers in Australia have declined over the years; however, a concerted effort from private property owners, volunteers and non-profit organisations is providing the Malleefowl with a helping hand. My time around Albany was an incredible wildlife-watching experience. I would recommend a visit to Albany even if one were just on holidays and not chasing wildlife. Albany is rich in Australian history and an absolute must to experience! Malleefowl

ii) Option 2 a more formal geomentric definition to all the main spatial zones imparts a more visually structured order and flow through the whole site with a crisper delineation between the different areas. A greater sense of unity of the whole site , this option would also experineced as far more informal on te ground iii) Option 3 pure rectilinear formality provides the most obvious and striking sense of visual structure and order. The scale of the site and the configuration of the sub--spaces still allows extended views ‘through spaces maintaning a ’big site feel’ within a more manageable layout. Each Option allows for maximised opportunities to include all the desired elements in a unified manner over the whole site The difference zones are structurally acheived by a broadly precise setout, attention to level ground planes, and the degree of edge definition. (eg: aim for pads with gradients of max1:50 falls. The configurations shown will require max 400cut and a similar fill in some locations only)

We have lots of plans for Green Team Activities this month, stay tuned to the School Newsletter for more details on upcoming meetings and working bees. Remember the whole community is welcome to come along to our working bees and see what we are achieving for our school and greater community. For some time now we have had the wonderful support of Irene White from In the Raw. Irene not only contributes to our working bees but has also sponsored

our end of term Nude Food Awards by donating a prize to the winning student. In the past, students who received weekly Nude Food Awards have gone into the draw for the end of term prize. This year we would like to include all students who contribute to the Green Team in any of our activities. We are renaming the award from Nude Food to Green Team Award for the term. Students will still be nominated by their teachers for weekly nude food awards and the Green Team strongly supports this initiative however we feel that the Green Team stands for so much

more than our Nude Food lunch boxes. We conduct weekly gardening club days to which we get a lot of student attendance and of course our working bees bring together students from all ages as well. This said, the Green Team felt it was necessary to give these students the opportunity to be rewarded with an entry into the end of term draw. Irene and her wonderful store support all our Green Team Initiatives and will continue to donate our prizes so that together we can promote a broader understanding of our community and environment.

Walk slowly, with an open heart. Life isn’t only about putting the superstructure in place. All that we build has to serve a more sensitive, human purpose, to be meaningful. The Sun is firing you up. At the same time, Venus is opening a floodgate of sensitivity. Keep your guard down.

Float in your own private universe. Take time to reflect and heal. This will be liberating. Something new may well come into being, from doing the opposite of what you would normally do. Do as little as possible. If you sense yourself interfering with the flow, do even less.

Mercury spends the next month dithering around in Gemini, not knowing whether to go hither or thither. Confusion is important. It has been said that confusion comes when old patterns have fallen apart and new ones haven’t as yet arrived Allow yourself the luxury of not knowing.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
Venus is travelling through Cancer. Whenever Venus around, the theme is ‘delight’. In how many ways can you experiment and express delight? What do you do that deepens delight? What do you do that gets in the way of delight? Make delight your meditation, your love affair.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
Jupiter has by now passed through the very middle of Leo. By now you should have had some sort of a glimpse into the nature of your strategies to maintain power. These strategies are what prevents you from growing. They aren’t what gives you growth. Go past what you know.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
With Mercury retrograde in Gemini, life is holding a mirror up to the mind’s habit of going around in circles, like a dog chasing his tail. The mind is a great servant but a lousy master. Let your dissatisfaction make you hungry for the creativity that can get you out of this loop.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Canungra T20 Cricket
Rod Thoroughgood smashes another boundary
By Stu Comley
Player of the Match, Ash Williams
Another great T20 Social Cricket Day on Sunday 26th April with Team Rich taking on Team Rhys. Rhys was unable to attend so Pearce Eldridge Captained on his behalf. Due to low numbers on the day, it ended up being a 6-a-side match. This meant that some players had the opportunity to bat twice. A huge thank you to Tony, Anne and Dave of Canungra Foodworks for supplying the bread rolls for the players’ lunch, very much appreciated. The scorecard was as follows; • Team Rhys/Pearce 8/60 off 20 overs (extras 13) • Top scorers were Pearce Eldridge 18 & Jake Knight 15 • Top wicket-taker was Ash Williams with 5/7 (Player of the Match) • Team Rich managed to surpass their target and took out the match losing only 6 wickets. Top scorers were Rich Morris 28, a stunning 43 from Rod Thoroughgood including four sixes and three fours, also a noteworthy 19 from Player of the Match, Ash Williams. The next match will hopefully take place on May 17th, but make sure you keep an eye on updates on the “T20 Social Cricket Canungra” Facebook page. New players are always welcome.

Canungra Owls Soccer News Settling in to soccer season now and all teams seem to be enjoying their competitions. Canteen helpers have been terrific and an extra big thankyou to Kelly Shostacki for taking over some of the night game shifts. Thanks to Ricky and Keiran for lining fields whilst Chris was away, and to the mystery champion grass picker upperers! Our goal posts have started arriving and will be painted and commissioned shortly. The second set will be provided as bolt together apparatus so we can store in the tractor shed when not required. Please be on the look out for some individuals who have been metal detecting on our fields and report to Bren or Virginia West; not an issue in essence but several holes have been dug with a small

trowel like tool and then filled in once examined thus causing a dangerous surface for our players running on the fields. A serious injury could occur and we must work together to keep our environment as safe as possible. Saturday 9th is Daniel Morcombe Day and our soccer club, in conjunction with Football Gold Coast, is doing some fundraising in support of Daniel’s Foundation. Canungra Owls will donate a set amount for each goal scored at Moriarty Park on the day by either team in each competition that day, plus we will run other raffles, games etc to raise more money ... so come along and be part of something we all feel strongly about and help raise stranger awareness. Wear something RED. Go the Owls !!
