Pool was Keeping Residents Healthy and Active

Self-confessed “Poolies” were grateful for an extended swimming season after Council negotiated with Canungra Swimming Pool operator Rackley’s Swimming to keep the pool open until 30th April. The extended season came after pool users petitioned Council, siting health benefits to patrons as a major reason for keeping the pool open. Mayor Greg Christensen said this season extension was communicated to local user groups and promoted on site, in the Beaudesert Times and on Council’s website. “As at mid-April there had been less than 500 attendances at the Canungra pool,” said Greg, “Council will review patronage figures at the end of April to determine whether a future extension of the season is viable.” The month long extension came at a cost of $6,000 according to Cr Virginia West, however the health benefits to pool users may outweigh the cost to Council. Patrons at the pool said it was an essential part of their fitness regime, with many unable to undertake other exercise due to health or injury problems. Barb Cullen said she started swimming to assist her rehabilitation after breaking her tibia and fibia in September 2014. She swims every day when the pool is open and days if it wasn’t for the pool she wouldn’t be back at work now.

Regular pool users - Mary Groves, Barbary Cullen and Robyn Mahony

“If I don’t keep moving I’ll seize up,” said Barb. Robyn Mahony said regular swimming helps keep her walking as she has hip and knee problems. Barb, Robyn and Mary Groves also attended the deep water running classes run by Pool Manager Karen Nixon. Once the pool closes, Barb and Robyn will travel to Nerang to swim but this means they will cut back from daily swimming to two to three times a week. Morgan Lee, who has recently been selected to swim in the Nationals in

September will also travel to Nerang to continue her training. Morgan’s father, Paul Lee said Morgan started training at Nerang Aquatic Centre early in May. “She will be doing a lot more kilometers in a more competitive environment,” he said, “Elsewhere we will have better training environment but more cost and more travelling. If they keep it open longer or through the winter for competitive swimmers, we also need access to adequate training and coaching, then there is the cost of heating and running the pool. Hard decision for council.”

Strong Support for Anzac Services Continues

The bagpipes of lone piper Bren Dalby sounded in the early dawn on Monday 25th April, setting the scene for Canungra’s Anzac Day observance. A large crowd of residents, serving Defence Force members and visitors filled D J Smith Park to hear the Commander of the Land Warfare Centre, Colonel David Hafner, pay tribute to the spirit and courage of the original Anzacs in his Dawn Service keynote address. Later in the morning the main street and D J Smith Park filled to capacity as Army, Navy and Air Force troops from Kokoda Barracks led the Anzac march up the main street to the memorial. Behind the RSL banner, veterans and ex servicemen and women were joined by descendants of those named on Canungra’s World War 1 memorial. The youth of the town was well represented in the march by Scouts, Guides and Canungra State School students. Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Hassell, Commanding Officer of the Defence Force School of Intelligence, gave a stirring Anzac address. A wreath was laid as part of World War 1 Centenary commemorations for the 21 locals killed in action or who died of wounds. Canungra State School students honoured those 21 fallen by wearing nameplates

Canungra State School Captains Jared Clift and Lily Collins laying a wreath on behalf of the School

bearing their names and replica service ribbons. RSL Sub Branch President Keith Cogzell said he continues to be amazed by the level of support for Anzac Day from all sections of the community. “It is our duty in the RSL to respond to the public support and provide memorial services honouring those who served, especially the 102,000 Australians who have given their lives,” said Keith.

He thanked local businesses for their assistance with Anzac Badge sales, especially Canungra Foodworks. “The generosity and support of Canungra Foodworks for our Gunfire Breakfast over the past eight years has not only made an essential fundraiser possible, it has enabled us to bring the local community together on Anzac Day in a spirit of commemoration and respect for those who served,” he said.

Greenlee

Cottages

Well known in the Hinterland for their honey and macadamia nuts, Greenlee Farm opened their newest venture, Greenlee Cottages on Tuesday 12th April. The four cottages located on Greenlee Farm in the Canungra Valley are named Silky Oak, Callistemon, Woodcutters and Casuarina, in recognition of the timber industry heritage of the area. These timbers are all currently found on the Greenlee Farm property. Shane O’Reilly, Chairman of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), congratulated Greenlee Farm owners Paul and Robyn Lee on the opening of the Cottages. “This type of boutique accommodation is a real growth area, particularly in the Scenic Rim where agritourism is incraesingly popular,” said Shane. “We need to remember that what we take for granted is often what people are looking for,” he said. Paul Lee said the design for the Cottages began in August 2014. “We thought it would be good if we could have it built by locals, we

Approved

Canungra will be home to six new townhouses following Council’s approval of a development application. The proposed development at 17 Appel St comprises six units spread across a complex of three two-storey buildings. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the development was adjacent to similar medium density residences and the proposed design of the complex had taken into account the preservation of open space on the block. Cr Virginia West said the development would complement the existing property mix in the immediate area and provide additional housing options in Canungra. “There are residents who have come off the land or acreage and are looking for smaller, lowmaintenance housing within walking distance of the village centre,” she said.

Upgrade

Work on the Christie Street footpath outside Canungra Valley Real Estate and Blackbird Pies should commence this month, according to Scenic Rim Regional Council. A Council spokesperson said upgrades to the Christie Streeet footpath have been funded in the 2015/16 Budget and on-ground works are anticipated to commence in late May. Currently the footpath is on an angle, making it difficult for people with mobility problems to negotiate, and impractical for those using motorised scooters or wheelchairs. The footpath leads to the town’s only doctor’s surgery, Canungra Valley Medical, from the main street. Canungra Valley Real Estate Principal, John Tetlow, said he has seen car doors damaged when people opened the door on the footpath side of the road because of the angle of the footpath. John said Council officers had been to see him regarding the work and the impact it might have on his business. Council was in the design finalisation stage in April after consultation with affected businesses.

Thank You

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Happy Birthday to us! A lot of businesses are having birthdays - last month Canungra FoodWorks celebrated nine years and this month InStyle celebrates five years in business and the Covino family celebrates ten years of owning and operating The Outpost Cafe. I have my own little celebration in the office here. It is eleven years this May that the Canungra Times has been operating and five years that I have owned it. In addition, it has been two years this month since the Bendigo Bank Agency opened. It has grown from what I thought would be two or three customers a day to being full-on every day of the three days a week it is open. While I’ve enjoyed running it, I’m hoping there won’t be a third birthday - if things go according to plan the Branch will be open well before next May (touch wood). Running a business is not for everyone. There is more risk, more commitment but potentially it can also be more rewarding than working for someone else. I’ve certainly found that to be the case. So for those of us around town who are celebrating business birthdays - congratulations! Enjoy what you are doing, enjoy your customers, your staff and your involvement in our community. Happy birthday - and may there be many more to come!

Your readers will be aware that the battle for Division 3 in the recent local government elections was extremely close. I would like to pay tribute to the members of my team who selflessly gave of themselves to support me in my endeavour to be the next councillor for Division 3. I would also like to thank all those people who voted for me - 49.2% of voters in Division 3! Your support won’t be forgotten and my only regret is that I won’t be able to help you with the many issues and concerns that were raised with me along the campaign trail. I would like to congratulate Cr Virginia West on being re-elected for a fourth term in Council as the representative for Division 3. I would also like to wish new mayor, Greg Christensen, new Division 4 councillor, Michael Enright, and other re-elected councillors, all the best for the next four years. While the future of Scenic Rim is exciting, there will no doubt be many challenges for the new Council. I wish them well. Finally, while it is unacceptable for voters to be denied their right to vote due to incorrect information provided by polling booth staff (as reported in last month’s Canungra Times), there is no evidence that the reported cases were more than isolated incidents. However, well done to the Canungra Times for keeping the electoral commission accountable and raising awareness of the issue. Steve Moriarty Candidate Division 3, 2016 Local Government Elections

Cafe Metz

I want to show my appreciation to Di and Bill from Metz Cafe as they handover to new owners. I caught Di as she was leaving on her last day and she surprised me with the news - I had no idea they were even selling the business. Ever since I’ve been going to Metz, the service has been warm and friendly, the food has been perfect and the coffee has been excellent! The cafe has always felt welcoming and Di and Bill always made sure that they knew you and remembered you. Their involvement in the community in particular their fundraising for Breast Cancer, their support to the Kokoda Barracks staff and their support of all bike riders - will be remembered for a long time to come. Thank you, we will miss you both at the cafe, and we wish you all the best for your future adventures. Nichola Doxford

Village Lions Giving Back By Shirlene Pott

Tamborine Village Lions Club has been donating $5,000 annually to Cystic Fibrosis of Queensland Australia, this year with a donation of $2000 given by Lions Club of Helensvale, we were able to donate a total of $7,000. The cheque for $7,000 was handed to Kathy Parker, CEO Cystic Fibrosis Queensland on 8th April by Tamborine Village Lions Club President David Walker at the annual handover meeting of the Mount Tamborine Lions Club held at St Bernard’s on Mount Tamborine. Kathy said the money will be used for the boredom and buster bags program and thanked the Clubs for their generosity. As this is our annual donation to the Foundation, all donations are welcome to assist in building funds for this project. We also donated four fridges to the Gold Coast University Hospital Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Ward. Each room required a fridge so that contamination would not take place for the kids. All of the above is possible due to members who give hours of their valuable time to do fundraisers and our Monthly Community Markets held on the 1st Sunday of each month. The May market will be on Mothers Day, Sunday 8th May, there will be raffles available as well as stalls. Congratulations to the organisers and everyone who turned out for the ANZAC Day ceremonies in Canungra and Beechmont. As always the majority, adults and kids alike, treated the occasion with the respect and consideration it deserved. We do hope that the dim witted motorcyclist who wanted to start up and ride on the closed road during the wreath laying doesn’t bother coming Anzac Day march in Canungra back next year. Patience and occasion are lost on some. There has been a bit of activity at Tamborine again. On ANZAC Day two criminals held up the Matilda Service Station with a cattle prod making a getaway with the cash register and a small amount of cash. They were identified before the day was out and are now in custody awaiting Court. There have also been a couple of reported thefts from building sites in Riemore Estate. The offenders have stolen building materials including roller doors and entrance doors. If anyone has any information please call the station or Crimestoppers on one of the numbers below. May is Domestic and Family Violence Protection Month. There is no place for violence in any household where everyone should be treated with respect. Domestic Violence can come in many forms including the obvious physical and the less obvious mental and controlling behaviours. It is up to all of us as community to look out for each other, not accept Domestic Violence and to seek help for those involved. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE RESIDENTS OF CANUNGRA, BEECHMONT & TAMBORINE To the 180 people who have already subscribed for shares in the Canungra & District Community Bank®, we the volunteer directors applaud your GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT & shared vision of establishing a new local business, employing locals, owned by locals and distributing its profits back into the community it serves. Hospitality and Serenity Certain to Bring Contentment

Nestled in the Canungra Valley, only 10 minutes out of town, Pearl of Contentment could not be better named. The 50 acre property boasts guest accommodation which can be self conttained or catered; lots of peaceful bushwalks and a large garden, which provides for a lot of the vegetarian meals guests enjoy. Not many people can be credited with changing someone’s life, but throughout her career Belinda Pearl has done that for many people and continues to do so through the retreat she runs with her sons, Jaslar and Tayden. It is a family business, with Belinda, Jaslar and Tayden running life-learning retreats once a month. Belinda teaches yoga, meditation and runs the training courses, while Jaslar prepares the vegetarian meals and Tayden, a third generation qualified masseuse, ensures guest are completely relaxed with massages on the verandah. The retreats focus on helping people to develop and grow in a holistic environment. Belinda has built her career on helping people with personal development, business coaching, counselling and communication and says Pearl of

Contentment is a natural progression from what she has achieved in the past. “I love spoiling people,” says Belinda, “I’m excited about bringing all my work experiences together.” Belinda has also been collecting antiques for use at the retreat for many years. Guests are treated to hospitality that can’t be found in larger hotels,

Eat Local Week 2016 - Tastier Than Ever

With less than three months to go, the Eat Local Week program of events for 2016 is hotting up to be bigger and tastier than ever. Council is again partnering with Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) for the nine-day celebration of all things food and farmers which last year attracted more than 22,000 visitors to the region and contributing over $1.2 million to the regional economy. “Now in its sixth year, Eat Local Week (25th June - 3rd July) encapsulates a wide variety of events from fine dining experiences to familyfriendly and low-cost activities for kids, locals and visitors including cooking classes, producer dinners, bush-tucker experiences, food festivals, farm tours and much more,” Mayor Greg Christensen said. “It is an opportunity to showcase the high quality food, wine and beverages produced in the Scenic Rim and to recognise the importance of agriculture to the region. “Aligning with a key theme of the Scenic Rim Community Plan 2011 2026, Eat Local Week and the Winter Harvest Festival deliver continuing economic sustainability and prosperity to our region across the agriculture, food and tourism industries.” Returning as Eat Local Week Ambassador is QAGOMA’s Executive Chef and current Good Food Guide’s Chef of the Year Josh Lopez, who will again lead the delightful Discovery and Degustation Tour of the region and indulge audiences at this year’s signature event, the Winter Harvest Festival, through a cooking demonstration. “I am thrilled to once again be the Eat Local Week ambassador where together we can explore the world-class produce of the Scenic Rim, renowned for its alluvial soils, vibrant farming communities and spectacular scenery,” Josh Lopez said. The 2016 program will be officially announced on 10th May with many new and exciting developments in store. Family favourites such as the Farm Gate Festival, Scenic Rim 4Real Milk open day, Kalfresh Carrot Field day and of course the Winter Harvest Festival are all returning this year. Camera Club’s First Open Studio

The Beaudesert Camera Club is pleased to be a part of the 2016 Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim Open Studios program. Participating for the first time, the Beaudesert Camera Club members are looking forward to sharing their knowledge and love of photography as well as the opportunity to display some of their work. On 14th and 15th May the Club will be part of the Beaudesert Open Studios weekend with displays and demonstrations taking place in The Centre, 82 Brisbane Street Beaudesert. Other participants on the trail for Beaudesert include cartoonist Phil Day, also at The Centre; The Lyrebird Gallery with painting, pottery, textiles and more; the QCWA Beaudesert Handmade Studio and an Arts Collective at the Beaudesert Museum. The Camera Club’s Open Studio will include a number of photographic displays and exhibitions as well as workshops and demonstrations on a wide variety of photography related topics. The exhibitions feature a number of collections of work from some of the senior members of the Club including Barry Chesseman and Peter Wright. Images from all club members will be displayed on the big screen. These images come from the Club’s Digital Projected Image competitions that are held regularly during the year. A collection of Cub members’ prints will also be on display throughout the weekend. The workshops will offer insights into a number of aspects of photography. A portraiture workshop will be conducted at various times across the weekend. The idea of this workshop is to demonstrate how to take photos of people using existing light and equipment that you have available. People are also encouraged to bring their camera along and pick up some tips from club members. A basic camera workshop will be conducted at various times over the weekend providing visitors with useful and practical information about their camera and how to get the best out of it. Regardless of the type of camera, bring it along and the members of the club will be happy to run through it with you. Another popular workshop is sure to be photo editing. While most people have heard of Photoshop, there are a large range of other photo editing programs that are free, easy to use and can have a big impact on your images. You are welcome to bring some images on a USB and Club members will show you how to edit them. Other workshops include matting and displaying photos, Macro Photography and an introduction to Instagram will also be held across the weekend. The Beaudesert Camera Club’s Open Studio is at the Centre, Brisbane Street Beaudesert on 14th and 15th May between 9am and 5pm each day. For a full list of workshops and times go to the camera clubs website www.beaudesertcamera.com.

The May meeting of the Chamber will be on Wednesday 11th May commencing at 7.30am at the Canungra Hub. Well Being

Winter is Coming!

With Clancy Lee Beck

Tips for Tackling Food Cravings

Bread binges, chocolate attacks, chip cravings. We all have them! The most common foods we crave our sugar, carbohydrates, chocolate and salt. For some it’s cheese. Cravings can be caused by a lack of endorphins (those feel-good chemicals in our body), an imbalance of healthy gut bacteria, or by negative emotions like stress, low selfesteem or sadness. All food’s fine in moderation, but if cravings are running your life, try these 7 simple tips! 1. Eat something else - sounds obvious right, but eating a healthier option can really work. Try a few nuts or a teaspoon of nut butter. A handful of strawberries, Lemon juice in water or tea works wonders, as does brushing your teeth if you’re at home. 2. Exercise - the best way to get ‘feel-good’ chemicals into your body. The increased metabolism relieves the flat feeling which triggered the craving. 3. Stay hydrated - drink about 2 litres of water a day (more if you’re 75+ kilos) since dehydration can cause false hunger and cravings. 4. Stay rested - getting enough sleep means you’re less likely to fall into an exhausted heap after lunch, searching for a sugary pick-me-up. 5. Sunshine - if your day is predominantly inside, try enjoying 15 minutes of sun during lunch or coffee break. It’s natural light therapy - and as winter approaches that sun feels SO good. 6. Meditation - a calm mind is generally a happier one. If you’re not the meditating type, then 15 minutes of any relaxing or uplifting activity will serve the same purpose. It could be as simple as listening to your favourite music. 7. Avoid the foods you crave - if it’s not in close proximity, you can’t succumb to it. Give yourself a fighting chance and keep it out of the house - you may just break the habit.

Cauliflower Mac N Cheese Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • •

200g (1 1/3 cups) dried macaroni pasta, plain or wholemeal 400g cauliflower, cut into small florets 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons plain flour 500ml (2 cups) reduced-fat milk 40g (1/2 cup) parmesan, finely grated 35g (1/3 cup) low-fat vintage cheddar, coarsely grated 80g (1/2 cup) frozen peas 1/2 bunch fresh continental parsley, finely chopped 2 teaspoons wholegrain or Dijon mustard 2 small garlic cloves, crushed 60g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs

Method:

Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan forced. Cook the pasta in a saucepan of boiling salted water, following packet directions, adding the cauliflower for the last 4 minutes of cooking time, until al dente. Drain and transfer to a large bowl. Heat 1 1/2 tbs of the oil in a saucepan over low heat. Add the flour. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes or until mixture bubbles. Gradually stir in the milk, whisking constantly until smooth. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring constantly, for 4-5 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Reserve 1 tbs of parmesan. Stir in the remaining parmesan. Stir in the cheddar, peas, parsley, mustard and garlic. Season with pepper. Stir sauce through pasta mixture. Divide mixture among four 375ml (1 1⁄2 cup) ovenproof dishes. Combine the breadcrumbs, remaining oil and reserved parmesan in a bowl. Scatter over the dish. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until top is golden and crisp. Note: For added flavour, or for the meat-eaters, add bacon!

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

Local Government Elections

It is a great privilege and honour to have been re-elected to represent the residents of Division 3 and the Scenic Rim and I look forward to working productively with the community to achieve positive outcomes. I would like to pay tribute to Steve Moriarty on a race well run. We have a new Mayor - Greg Christensen and a new councillor for Division 4 - Michael Enright and I can assure you we have “hit the ground running” with elected member updates and briefings on the upcoming budget and the various workings of a council. In this term of council, the councillors have collectively decided to rotate on a yearly basis the positions of Deputy Mayor and the three committee chair roles. I will be the Chair of Corporate and Community Services for the next year and Cr Nigel Waistell the Deputy Mayor. The chair of Finance is Cr Nadia O’Carroll, and the Planning and Development Committee Chair is Cr Rick Stanfield. It was a great honour to be the Deputy Mayor in the last term of council but there is no doubt that it frequently takes you away from your division and time with divisional constituents.

Importance Of Microchipping / Registering Your Dog

A Canungra family recently lost their much loved family dog only to have her turn up at Robina and be returned by Gold Coast City Council. The dog’s collar had been removed (yes she was registered) and it was the microchip that enabled her to be safely returned to her distraught family. How she got to Robina is something one can only guess! Microchipping is easily and cheaply done by any veterinarian.

Be Healthy And Active Program

This initiative has gone exceeding well this year with so many more activities and participants in all our communities. The Canungra Pool has stayed open for another month due to fierce community sentiment from the group who has been attending Karen’s Aquarobics and Deep Water Running classes, coupled with the ongoing warm weather. This has been a trial as council plans for the future and the attendance numbers will be assessed but I would welcome any feedback from those who have been using the pool over summer.

Footpath On Christie Street

This can’t come quickly enough for us all, a slight delay with some design issues and the disabled access to both shops coupled with the challenging slope on the road. I am advised the job will be underway in late May and as I write the parking space opposite Appel Street where the tree roots have lifted the bitumen is under repair.

Anzac Day

Throughout the Scenic Rim each service had a special and unique significance and again the attendance numbers were high. The newly renovated Beechmont Memorial in Graceleigh Park looked spectacular with the poppies behind it and Canungra were lucky enough to secure a platoon of army personnel again this year to highlight the mid morning march down Christie St. If you get a chance to look at the Anzac window display at My Country Escape, it is spectacular and has photographs of all those whose names appear on the monument in DJ Smith Park.

Nature’s Gems

Giant King Crickets

Quokka (Setonix Brachyurus) By Melissa Whitby

By Susan Cully

I have been lucky to have travelled to many parts of Australia and overseas in pursuit of seeing unique wildlife. In most circumstances, I am also lucky enough to photograph a number of these creatures. Whilst going through my numerous photos, I came across a unique creature that is as much an icon of Australia as the Koala. This amazing creature is known as Quokka. The Quokka is a small wallaby-like animal with coarse, dark brown fur. This beautiful animal is now restricted to Rottnest Island and Bald Island in Western Australia (WA). Quokka populations on the mainland of Western Australia have seriously declined. Suitable habitats for Quokkas include Jarrah forrest and dense thickets along watercourses on WA’s mainland and modified vegetation areas on Rottnest Island. Quokkas usually breed once a year with one young being born. On Rottnest Island, I observed Quokkas eating leaves and short, green grass. When the animals were not feeding, they would retreat to dense vegetation cover to rest. Introduced mammalian predators such as foxes and cats have contributed to the decline of Quokka populations on the Australian mainland. Evidence of this can be seen with the Quokka population on Rottnest Island, which has flourished without the negative impact of feral pest species. As previously mentioned, Rottnest Island off the WA coast from Perth is the best place to see and photograph these unique creatures. It is possible to see the animals only minutes after stepping off the ferry from the mainland. I only spent a day on Rottnest Island but I had many great opportunities to watch Quokkas going about their everyday business. It is an experience that I will not Quokka forget and I strongly urge anyone with an interest in Australian mammals to take advantage of an opportunity to share the space of such a beautiful creature.

Giant King Crickets are often seen while driving or walking up a road in the vicinity of a rainforest, especially in the rain during summer months. They can be seen long-jumping from one side of the road to the other. They are a common sight in Beechmont along the road to Nerang. They are strictly nocturnal. Up close they appear quite menacing. The female has a long ovipositor that looks positively dangerous, however, it is only used for inserting eggs into the soil. The male has a massive head with enlarged jaws, sometimes comprising ¼ of the body length. The jaws can be used to deliver a painful but harmless pinch. Giant King Crickets can achieve 80mm in length. They are found only in rainforests in south-eastern Queensland and north-east New South Wales. They live in burrows in the soil and emerge on wet nights to forage on the rainforest floor for live insects and rotten fruit. Occasionally a fully grown specimen can be seen with surprisingly large prey, even a fully grown Great Barred Frog (Mixophyes fasciolatus). The ‘giant king crickets’ belonging to the genus Anostostoma can be found in the Canungra District rainforests of Beechmont and Lamington. The plateaus of Mt Warning, including Tamborine, Beechmont and Springbrook are home to five described species, as well as one small, undescribed species found on the Springbrook Plateau. Giant King Crickets are closely related to the giant wetas of New Zealand.

AWL Pets of the Month

SHEEBA (ID: 49104) Australian Kelpie x Shepherd, 3 years, female. Sheeba is a sweet little lady who would like to be pampered and spoiled. Sheeba doesn’t mind other dogs, and she generally has excellent manners with them. However, Sheeba expects good manners in return, and would best suit a home where she is the only dog, or she has a gentle, quiet doggy companion. She likes to go for walks and explore, and loves to learn new things! Sheeba is $250 and she is fully desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. CANDYCE (ID: 40337) Domestic Short Hair x, adult, female. This lovely cat has previously been around dogs, so should be a good fit to a household with an existing cat friendly dog. Candyce is litter trained and likes her cuddles, but loud noises can be a bit scary to her so she would do best in a quieter home. She loves to cuddle and spend time with her humans. Candyce’s adoption fee is $99 and she is fully desexed, vaccinated, microchipped behaviour assessed and health checked. To meet Sheeba, Candyce or other animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

Why is Steve Standing Like That?

No, it’s not an injury - the photo above was taken during a walk organised by local personal trainer Steve Crook along the first part of the Camino walk in Europe. In this photo, the group is crossing the border between France and Spain and Steve is standing with one leg in each country, over the Pyrenees Mountains. The walkers battled strong winds, snow and wet weather but everyone finished the trek with a great sense of personal acheivement.

Save These Dates - Mudgeeraba Show!

Students of the Week - Well done!

Chase (4A) for being a dedicated and hard working student who strives to achieve his very best in all areas of learning.

Easter Hat Parade

The end of Term One was celebrated with the hugely successful Easter Hat Parade. The Beginner band and Mrs Todhunter performed Hot Cross Buns as a part of the Principal’s Music Challenge. Thanks to the support of Foodworks and the community close to $2000 was raised for the P&C.

Mata’afa (prep B) for being a dedicated and hard working student who happily attempts and completes all tasks even if they are challenging.

Reading Rocks

Canungra State School’s focus for this year as a whole school community is reading and making sure our children have the skills in reading to be successful. The staff are working hard to deliver the best possible teaching and learning experiences for students to bring them to their highest level of achievement. One of the ways you can help at home and in the community is make sure that parents and family members model being a reader, using and enjoying all types of texts. Make sure that all our students know that reading rocks!

Connect to Your Creek Week

Canungra State School is blessed by having the stunning creek bordering our school grounds. We celebrated and connected to the creek in April Page 24

School Happenings - Canungra State School Canungra Green Team News

Fiona Williams, Canungra State School Green Team Thanks to all the families and staff who attended our first working bee for the year. It was held in conjunction with Clean Up Australia Day and we had nearly 30 people join us on Saturday 12th March.

Creek Bank Yoga

With so much help we managed to weed and re-mulch Miss Lisa’s garden in the Prep area and add some more plants. We also removed some overgrown gardens around the Bendigo buildings and replanted and mulched

these. Our smaller helpers also did a fantastic job of weeding and tidying up our vege gardens! A big thanks has to go to the Scenic Rim Council who donated one hundred plants from the Million Trees Initiative for the day. Also a big thanks to those in the community who supported our Sausage Sizzle at the school on Election Day. Thanks to Foodworks Canungra for donating the food for the day. We

managed to raise $100 so that will be a big help for us. Also a big thanks to the community and especially Kara from Canungra Yoga for supporting us again in this year’s Connect to Your Creek Week, we had a wonderful time at Yoga on the creek bank on Friday 15th April. The Kindy kids also enjoyed their time on the creek bank. If you would like more information about the Green Team email greenteamcss@ gmail.com.

News from St Luke’s

Suduko

By Di Ayscough

What a wonderful display of support and patriotism occurred for the celebration at Canungra on Anzac Day. Sometimes it is easy to overlook what happens around us and only concentrate on ourselves. Anzac Day really demonstrates how important it is to be thankful and eternally grateful to those who fought to maintain our freedom and way of life. The inspiring words we heard from the Lt. Colonel of the Intelligence Division at the Kokoda Barracks could not have been more informative, or more thought provoking. I felt very proud to know such amazing people protect us and allow us to live so peacefully in this country. In the same way Jesus spoke to his people offering similar messages of peace, love and freedom for us all. Although there is always conflict and war somewhere in the world we do have our faith and our freedom here in Canungra. If you attended the Anzac Service on Monday and were touched by the people marching, the bagpipes playing, the laying of wreaths, the singing, speeches or prayers then you too wiped a tear or two from your eyes. I know I did. If you would like to develop your feelings of gratefulness and thanks, and if you would like to feel loved and protected you are welcome to drop in to St Luke’s. We always open our doors with love and sincerity.

Solution page 34

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Found Peacock and hen found at Beechmont: We have two peacocks in our garden, They have come who knows where, Someone must be missing them They’re such a friendly pair, They strut around the garden, In a very stately way, They really are not much trouble But we’ll take it day by day, Our friendly dog ignores them At least I think she does, The neighbours dogs are differnt, They created quite a fuss The birds are lacking sustenance I’m judging by the poo, I find out on the patio, In piles both old and new, I hope whoever owns them, Will read this little poem And ring the number underneath And take the wanderers home 5533 3777 or 0407 675 545

CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB With Mary Groves

Ladies vs Men at Canungra Golf

What a great day! There were 32 players but we needed some gender reassignments for the day with 13 ladies (five real ones and eight hairy legged ones) and 19 other men. Guess what!!! The LADIES WON (again)! An amazingly close score of 32.69 (average stableford score) for the ladies and 32.42 for the men. A great fun day was had by all, but our happy group still need more ladies to join. It costs less than two cups of coffee a day to become a member of our friendly, very social group to play either in the mixed group on Saturday mornings men’s on Thursdays, or ladies Tuesdays. Carol Thurston is a relatively new player but played a great game to win the April monthly medal and will be hard to beat again this month. On a sad note, June Dalby , one of our long time members and Canungra resident, passed away at her home town of Broken Hill in March. She leaves us with happy memories.

Tamborine Bushrats Retain Chris Wills Shield By Richard Morris

The Tamborine Mountain Bushrats have retained the Chris Wills Shield with a win in their match against the Lucky Stars Australian Transplant cricket team on Sunday 2nd April. In the 30-over-a-side game at Chris Wills Oval Mount Tamborine, the Lucky Stars could only manage 152 in reply to the Bushrats 186.

The game was played in honour of Bushrats player and transplant recipient Chris Wills, who sadly passed away in 2009, and aims to highlight organ and tissue donation awareness. The Lucky Stars team were comprised of players who have received a life-saving organ or tissue transplant and were helped by former Australian ODI player Peter Forrest and Brisbane Heat player Andrew Robinson.

The Bushrats batted first and made 186 thanks to solid batting by player of the match John Flanagan.

biggest the

morning tea

Join us on the 26th of May 2016 for our annual Biggest Morning Tea. Over the past few years Sam and Ali and their gracious host, O'Reilly's Vineyard, have donated their time and venue in order to support this fabulous charity. Each year it has grown and this year will be no different.

At the innings break, players for both sides enjoyed lunch kindly donated by Colin Purdie, owner of Subway North Tamborine, the sponsor for the day. The Lucky stars opened with Robinson and Forrest, with Forrest going on to make 45 (retired) in a good partnership with Matty Hempstalk (23). But wickets fell regularly during the middle order and despite some contributions from Peter Welsh (16) and Steven Arthy (24), the Lucky stars fell 34 runs short. Organisers would like to thank the DonateLife team who manned an information tent for spectators at the ground and local Beaudesert MP Jon Krause, who played for the Bushrats side and helped promote the match in the community.

If the offer of bottomless tea and coffee isn’t enough, we also have a number of activities to keep you entertained; including but not limited to our very popular bake off; of sweet and savoury delights, raffles, best dressed, duck races by the creek and a fashion parade.

Bianca’s Ready to Race at Canungra Hotel Rodeo

Rodeo is generally known as a man’s sport. The bulls, the broncs, the rough and tumble of the origin of the sport has made it synonymous with cowboys world wide. The Australian Rodeo Queen Quest aims to raise the profile of women in the sport. Bianca Mason works full time and is mother to three busy children. In 2015, she decided to follow her dreams and enter the 2016 Australian Rodeo Queen Quest. Bianca has been around rodeos for 10 years and has been barrel racing competitively for four years. Recently Bianca ventured from her home in Mount Tarampa to the Canungra Hotel to assist in her fundraising for the quest. As an entrant, Bianca has to raise $5,000. “It would be an honour to become Rodeo Queen of Australia,” said Bianca. “It would give me the opportunity to represent our beautiful country in the sport of rodeo, it would also let me show

both young and old that rodeo Queens are more than just make-up and glitter.” “I would love to be a role model for young women. I would promote originality and show the younger generation that you should always believe in yourself,” she said. Bianca is looking forward to returning to Canungra in July to compete in

the open barrel race and the National Rodeo Association Rodeo Queen Quest at the Canungra Hotel Rodeo on Saturday 9th July. Each contestent in the National Rodeo Assocation Rodeo Queen Quest is judged on horsemanship, appearance, personality and knowledge.

By Stephen Mills, Club President We are already a few games into the season and our teams are performing well and enjoying the game days, traveling near and far to play with great team spirit representing Canungra proudly. Thanks to the dedicated volunteer coaching team and also Clancy Lee Beck our Fitness Co-ordinator who is giving the kids some added guidance with both fitness and nutritional advice. We hope to see some positive changes in the kids this year both on and off the field. Our Tuesday training sessions followed by our gold coin supper is proving a big hit and will continue throughout the season allowing the club to come together at end of training with a meal for all the family, a big thanks to our Food and Beverage Co-ordinator Josh Samuels for making this happen. The next school holidays we have a Coaching Clinic happening in the first week from Monday to Thursday with Gary French and Deanna Thompson coming down to provide some skill training. Gary has coached International Players in England, USA and Australia and recruits to the USA for Soccer Scholarships. His web site is www.garyfrenchfootball.com.

On Saturday 30th April, Canungra Bowls Club hosted a 5-A-Side Mixed Medley Competition sponsored by the Canungra Sports & Recreation Association (CSRA). This was the first time in over ten years that the Bowls Club has hosted an event of this kind and 70 bowlers competed in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Mixed Fours. The winners of the day were a local team of Wayne and Val Reiser, John Butterfield, Carolyn Hahn and Shane Stevenson. Prior to announcing the winners, the Bowls Club invited Wayne Reiser to officially open the renovated bar. The renovation was made possible follwing a generous donation of timber from CSRA and the labour provided by Bowls Club members, Neil Day and Brian Laurence. The Bowls Club would like to thank all those involved in making this improvement to the facilities. A plaque was unveiled by George Randall dedicated to the voluntary service provided by George and June Randall to both organisations – 11 years to CSRA and 20 years to the Canungra Bowls Club. Both organisations are indebted to both George and June for their lengthy and selfless service over the years! It was extremely pleasing to see two community organisations working together to stage a very successful day that was enjoyed by all who participated. The Bowls Club would like to formally thank the Canungra Sports & Recreation Association for their generous support and we look forward to working together again in the future.
