Turning Canungra Pink Raises Over $20,000
The Canungra Chamber of Commerce presented a cheque to Cancer Council Queensland for $24,151.20 at their last meeting, the proceeds of 2016’s Turning Canungra Pink. Each year the small Gold Coast Hinterland town covers itself in pink, with residents and business owners running events such as Street Markets, High Tea, Girls Night In and a Pink Dinner to raise funds and awareness of cancer. 2016 Turning Canungra Pink Coordinator, Tamlyn Geiger, thanked the organising committee and those who ran events and raffles, donated prizes and provided sponsorship for Turning Canungra Pink last year. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan thanked the Canungra community for uniting in pink to make a difference in the fight against cancer. “We commend the Turning Canungra Pink organisers for their ongoing commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer and helping us reduce the burden of cancer on Queensland communities,” Ms McMillan said. “In the Gold Coast region, around 3630 people are diagnosed with cancer every year, and about 1120 people die from the disease. “Cancer Council Queensland provides support for locals affected by cancer, investing in ongoing research and support programs for those in need. “This includes offering support and information through 13 11 20, providing wigs and turbans to cancer patients, accommodation patients travelling for treatment and more.” Ms McMillan urged people to show their support by participating in Turning Canungra Pink in 2017.
Di Dixon receives a cheque from Canungra Chamber of Commerce for Turning Canungra Pink
“With your help we can provide vital support to the one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.” Planning for Turning Canungra Pink 2017 has begun. Funds raised this year will be distributed to local people battling cancer as well as Cancer Council Queensland. A calendar of events is being put together and will be finalised by mid-August to maximise advertising and media coverage. Events already under discussion include Pink Bingo Night on 1st October; Street Markets on 7th October, Golf Day; High
Tea; Caudan Street Kitchen lunch at The Chalet, Sarabah Estate; and the Pink Dinner on 27th October. A competition for businesses to decorate their shopfronts and a competition for householders to decorate their houses will also be run. Anyone who would like to run an event; help to decorate the town or assist in other ways can email turningcanungrapink@ gmail.com or message the turningcanungrapink Facebook page.

Lest We Forget

Vicki Eldridge and Hylton Frugtniet. Photo: Sweetspot Photography
During my many years of military service, I have had the opportunity to attend ANZAC Day activities throughout Australia and overseas in major cities and small country towns and each event has had something special about it. This year’s ANZAC Dawn Service was once again different. The numbers in attendance was wonderful and the warmth that was generated in the form of respect was outstanding. The catafalque party from the Defence Force School of Intelligence brought a deep, respectful and ceremonial feeling to all who attended. Colonel John Simeoni, Commandant of The Land warfare Centre delivered a strong and meaningful address, that summed up what a Dawn Service and ANZAC Day is all about. These stirring words were matched by the solemnity of Army Chaplain, Major James Pearce prayers for peace, hope, and remembrance. The laying of the wreaths was accompanied by the haunting sounds of our lone piper, Mrs Bren Dalby. Mr Tim Hunt, Canungra’s renowned bugler, placed a beautiful feeling of remembrance with the sounds of the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’. Mr Christopher Duncan’s singing of the New Zealand and Australian Anthems capped off a wonderful daybreak. The Mid-Morning ANZAC Service commenced with the march from the Canungra State School to D J Smith Park. The sounds of the BBC Old Collegians Pipes and Drums filled the air as the those in the march led by 100 tri-Service members from the Defence Force School of Intelligence marched past the saluting point at the Post Office. They were followed by the RSL members, veterans, SES, Ambulance services, Scouts, and local school children.

Anzac Day 2017
At the memorial, Mr Duncan set the scene with his beautiful rendition of the song, ‘The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Alder, Commanding Officer Defence Force School of Intelligence having earlier taken the salute at the Post Office, gave and inspiring ANZAC Day address comparing those who fought at Gallipoli and those who are on operation services today. Again, Chaplain James Pearce prayers of compassion for not only the fallen and injured but those loved ones who support the returned complemented the words of Lieutenant Colonel Alder. The School Captains from Canungra State School, Erin Adolphs and Brody Reed, brought a wonderful feeling with their reading of the poem, ‘ANZAC Day’. Once again, Mr Hunt provided the sounds of ‘Last Post ‘and ‘Rouse’, with Mr Duncan finishing the ceremony in singing the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems. My sincere thanks to all who participated, attended and organised ANZAC Day, Canungra 2017. Your efforts can only be described as outstanding; perpetuating the ANZAC spirit that was forged on 25th April 1915.

Are We Still Healthy and Active?
The Scenic Rim Regional Council sponsored Be Healthy & Active program saw several exercise classes available for little cost to participants. The idea behind the program is to increase the health of the community by increasing the exercise undertaken. It has brought several new classes to the area, as well as enabling people to try new forms of exercise. Although some classes are unable to be offered at the moment (such as aqua aerobics which may be offered again later in the year when Canungra Pool reopens), others are still available. Canungra Yoga’s new timetable includes a seated yoga class for only $10 as well as a gentle yoga class for those who are new to yoga or prefer some easier stretches. For more information and a timetable of classes, see the advertisement on this page, visit the Canungra Yoga web site, or like their page on Facebook. Tai Chi classes have been held at Moriarty Park Hall for the last few months as part of the Be Healthy & Active program. Several of the participants would like the classes to continue and hope to encourage other people to join them on Wednesdays from 9am to 10am. Classes are run by instructor Gai Wanless, who has over 30 years experience. Tai Chi & Qigong (pronounced Chi Kung) have been practised in China for hundreds of years. Tai Chi originated as a martial art but has become more well known as an exercise system to improve health & well-being. It rates very highly as an exercise that improves your memory, concentration & overall brain health. Tai Chi is often called ‘Meditation in Motion’ but the
Tai Chi instructor, Gai Wanless, at Moriarty Park
• Thursday - Pilates. 6pm. $10. Instructor Alanna Phillips says she has kept the cost to $5 to encourage people to continue with the classes. Pilates is good for those with injuries such as bad backs or knees who want to stretch out and use their muscles without high impact activity. For more information contact Alanna on 0409 752 997 or alanna651@bigpond.com. There are a variety of classes as well as personal training available at Live Fit Gym. Classes are available most days of the week, and the gym itself is open 24 hours for members. For details contact Live Fit Gym or see the Canungra Times date claimer. The outcomes of the Be Healthy & Active program will be up to individuals, but there are still plenty of opportunities to continue to be healthy and active.
Harvard Medical School Health Publication, May 2009 states it might well be called ‘Medication in Motion’. ‘There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice ...has value in treating or preventing many health problems.’ Harvard researcher Dr Herbert Benson explains that Mind-Body practices like Tai Chi and Qigong more effectively treat 60 to 90% of health issues than drug or surgical therapies. Classes are suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. For more information contact fully accredited instructor Gai Wanless on 0409 066 501 or visit www.ttcak.com. Pilates classes at 5.30pm on Tuesdays which were running during the Be Healthy & Active program are continuing at Moriarty Park Hall, with additional classes: • Monday - Men’s Back Health. 6.30pm. $10. • Tuesday - Pilates. 5.30pm. $5.

Hotel 80th Birthday Celebrations
The Canungra Hotel celebrated its 80th Birthday with a massive cash draw and a possible $80,000 to be won. Draws were conducted over three months for a total of 20 key winners, with the final two key winners drawn on the final night of the competition, Friday 7th April. The 20 key winners were a ‘who’s who’ of Canungra, with several of the pioneering families of the area amongst them. One key recipient thought he was almost entitled to win the major prize as, in his
words “I’ve spent about eighty grand here just to get a key!”. Each of the key winners were given an $80 gift voucher for the Hotel, except for the winning key, which was drawn by Bradley Jones. Bradley was on a course at Kokoda Barracks, Canungra when he won the key and had unfortunately been transferred prior to the night of the draw. He was kept informed about the proceedings on the night the night by phone.
Although Bradley didn’t end up taking out the major prize of $80,000, he did walk away with a very handy $800. Canungra Hotel Manager Simon Walsh thanked all the patrons who supported the birthday promotion. “We will be running a similar promotion towards the end of the year,” said Simon. “I’m looking forward to making it bigger and better - just in time for Christmas!” Canungra Hotel remains one of Canungra’s most iconic buildings as well as one of the most popular.
Canungra Visitor Information Centre received a grant from the Canungra & District Community Bank to purchase a television and DVD player which will be used in the Centre to showcase local tourist areas and the history of the region. Page 12

The Answer to Your Online Marketing!
If you’ve been wishing you had someone local who could build your website, ensure you have a good ranking with Google and give you advice about your social media marketing, your wish has just been granted! Kirsty Da Silva has spent years in marketing and IT, travelling all around the world working for companies like IBM and Siemens. It sounds glamorous, but Kirsty says she was spending more time away than at home, and far too much time on planes when an idea formed to start her own company. Kirsty would like to bring all of her experience working for multinationals to that of small businesses in Canungra and her goal is to see local businesses grow. She started her new marketing and web design company, Wavemaker Marketing, in February and has been going ahead in leaps and bounds, with websites already up and running for Canungra’s local kids Siam Cup Muay Thai and newly formed bed and breakfast, Country Mile Escape. Wavemaker Marketing is taking a fresh new look at website design and digital marketing and Kirsty believes that there is far more to creating a website than just making it look good. By discussing the needs of the business and finding out where the growth opportunities are a whole digital campaign can be created to enhance the business. This is where the background tech of a website becomes important. “For a website to be useful it must now work on all sorts of devices,” says Kirsty, “With around 70% of searches now done on

mobile phones, a website must be able to be responsive to changing platforms.” Kirsty says this means the website must be easily used on a computer, tablet or mobile phone as well as working well with a number of browsers. But responsiveness is useless if a website isn’t found. To be found these days is getting trickier, it requires not only adding key words but understanding the unique artificial intelligence algorithms that are now in play with google. Kirsty has been lucky to have worked with IBM’s Watson intelligence systems and is up to date with these new methods.
Kirsty is loving the new lifestyle and working with local businesses is proving to be very rewarding. “I enjoy getting to know my clients, as well as helping them to build their business,” she said, “I’m excited about seeing the results of my work as I watch our local businesses grow.” Spending time at home is also very welcome and Kiah the border collie (Wavemaker Marketing’s Recreation Manager) concurs that a balanced lifestyle is a must! Although by Kiah’s standards that could mean a ball or a frisbee being thrown all day!

Canungra Selfies!
The Canungra Times - May 2017
Ok, so it’s not a selfie, but this photo, sent in by Kim Sami, is just too cute not to print! Looking like this bird is having a good look through the April edition of The Canungra Times, but I think it’s more likely that he is eyeing off Kim’s cheese and crackers! If you’ve always wanted to be in the paper, take a selfie somewhere in or around Canungra and email it to news@canungratimes.com.au!

Shopping Local Usually get on my soap box about shopping locally a bit before Christmas, but since the flooding we had in March I’ve seen a few people hit hard by the damage to their properties. Some of these people are business owners or people who work locally and depend on you, the customer, for their income. So buying your Mother’s Day gift at the Gold Coast, or taking Mum out in Brisbane for Mother’s Day, might night affect you (or Mum) very much, but it might just be what breaks the bank for a small business owner. We live in a society of rampant consumerism, and business owners, especially those in retail sales and hospitality (as many in our town are), depend on things like the Easter break, Mother’s Day and Christmas to keep them afloat. While it could be argued that the tourism dollar keeps some of our businesses going, I’m told by many business owners that it is the regular local customers who keep them in business. This in turn keeps your soccer coach in town, keeps the shops we have going, gives community groups the ability to network and help each other. So this Mother’s Day, shop local and stay local Mum will thank you, and so will your community.

Ginja Ninja - Licensed! Japanese Kitchen, Ginja Ninja, are getting five star reviews on everything from Facebook to Trip Advisor. Their fresh, healthy meals and great service are already well known, but they have recently been granted a liquor licence so they can serve a selection of beer, wine and cider to complement your meal. Josh, Danielle and their staff prefer to offer their customers the best - so they have selected Stone & Wood, Coopers and Japan’s number one beer, Asahi which is perfect with the Salt and Pepper Squid or Teriyaki Steak meal. They also have Angry Orchard cider and a selection of Brown Brothers wines. Josh says the draft beer system is still under construction and should be finished in the near future. Due to liquor licence regulations there is no BYO alcohol, but Josh is confident he has a selection of beer, wine and cider to suit every taste. The outdoor beer garden atmosphere is the perfect place to enjoy a meal and a glass or two of your favourite beverage. As one Trip Advisor review says: Great place to pick up some fresh sushi, or coffee. The special California roll with fresh cooked salmon is unreal! The menu has much more than sushi, with main meals like, spicy Karaage chicken bowl, teriyaki chicken or steak, salt and pepper squid, panko crumbed prawns, tempura vegetables. Most of the menu is gluten free and msg free with plenty of vegetarian options. Great atmosphere, both inside and out in the beer garden. The service, food and coffee are all 5 star!

Mother’s Day In the Olives If a Mothers’ day gift is still being sought, a place in one of the many workshops still available at this year’s Arts In The Olives Festival is a novel idea. A variety of workshops are on offer - flute making, basketry, aboriginal art, bead making to name a few but one of particular interest to Canungra readers is the “watercolour basics and techniques for beginners” with Tamlyn Geiger. Prices for the workshops are $45 per half day and $80 per full day (material costs extra) with some workshops being held on Saturday 13th May but the majority on the Sunday. Children’s workshops are free. This is the 10th year for the festival and the theme this year is “Celebrating a decade of creativity”. BADCAP (Beaudesert and District Community Arts Projects) in conjunction with the Lost World Valley community is responsible for this ever-popular festival at the Lost World which is only 90 minutes from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The address is 3151 Kerry Road and admission is $10, school children $5 with children under 5 free. Arts In The Olives is the second open studio in the Open Studio program – and the biggest single studio. As well as the workshops which people love participating in or looking at, there are artisan stalls, the Grove Gallery filled with exhibits from local artists, a full music program and many gourmet food and wine outlets all under cover of the beautifully shady olive trees. Understandably there are lots of olive products available as well. Bookings for the workshops are essential and, as numbers are limited, it is recommended not to delay. Book online this year and you get free entry to the festival. Details of all the workshops and bookings can be made online at www.artsintheolives.com BADCAP is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers and looks forward to putting the proceeds of this year’s festival towards more public art in the Scenic Rim.

Rebuilding and Rethinking
Neighbours went out of their way to assist others following the flooding and damage caused on 30th March 2017. With flooding and landslips widespread in the region, Canungra residents assisted by helping each other out until Council crews could assist. On National Park Road, Bren and George Dalby woke to find their driveway was completely washed out. Not long after George posted a photo on social media, his neighbours, Ray and Aaron Mahony phoned. “Hey mate , saw your driveway , Azza and I are just having brekky and then we’ll be over with the tractor.” Bren says Ray and Aaron arrived about twenty minutes later with afore mentioned tractor and spent the next three hours fixing up the driveway better than ever. Sarabah Road also suffered severe damage, with residents cut off where the road had washed away at the entry points to bridges. The small number of residents in this area mean it is often a low priority for Council to attend to after damage. John and Ben Luscombe spent all weekend on 1st and 2nd April working on Sarabah Road to provide access to their neighbours. “We’ve been doing it for years,” said John, “We had two diggers and a bobcat working on it all weekend.” Over 78 landslips meant businesses at the end of Lamington National Park Road had to wait three weeks for the road to reopen to the public. Tonnes of debris were removed from the road, with work made more difficult due to the . Within days of the flooding O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat were able to convoy guests to and from the Retreat at specified times. Guests unable to make the convoy times had to cancel their stay, and Mountview Alpaca Farm was forced to close completely and is now looking for an alternative location. For a small number of residents, the options are grim as they clean up homes and properties which have been damaged several times in the past decade. These people are faced with the choice to stay where they are and wait for the next rain event, or attempt to sell what might be an unsalable property.

Love Of Flowers Blooms at My Country Escape
Samantha (Sam) Dusting’s love of flowers began in her Grandmother’s cottage garden in Victoria when she was a child, so it is fitting that she named her florist business ‘Lydia’s Garden’ after her Grandmother. “When we visited her she would give us a basket and we could pick whatever flowers we wanted,” said Sam. After working closely with Michelle Roper-Dennis of My Country Escape for Turning Canungra Pink last year, Sam has joined Michelle in the My Country Escape shop to supply a greater range of fresh flowers to the shop, as well as catering for outside orders. “We enjoyed working together and I love having Sam and the flowers in the shop so the relationship built from there,” said Michelle. Sam has many years of experience in providing beautiful arrangements for all occasions, including weddings, birthdays and funerals. “The first wedding I did was at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast many years ago,” said Sam. In addition to weddings and special occasion flowers, Sam has designed wreaths for many for Anzac Day ceremonies, including

a spectacular wreath recently featured in My Country Escape’s window as part of Michelle’s Anzac Day commemoration. Sam will be at the Vintage Brocante at the Canungra School of Arts Hall on 4th June.

The Beaudesert Camera Club will take part in the 2017 Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim Open Studios program. The members of the Beaudesert Camera Club really enjoyed the experience last year and are again looking forward to sharing their knowledge and love of photography. On 20th and 21st May the Club will be part of the Beaudesert Open Studios weekend with displays and demonstrations taking place in The Centre, 82 Brisbane Street Beaudesert. Other participants on the trail for Beaudesert include Christine Purtle with painting and drawing, The Lyrebird Gallery with painting, ceramics, textiles and more, the QCWA Beaudesert Handmade Studio, works by Kim Brolga Williams at the Library and an Arts Collective at the Beaudesert Museum. The Camera Club’s Open Studio will include a number of photographic displays and exhibitions as well as workshops and demonstrations on a wide variety of photography related topics. The exhibitions feature a number of collections of work from some club members. Images from the Club’s Digital Projected Image competitions that are held regularly during the year, along with a collection of club members’ prints will be on display throughout the weekend. A series of workshops will offer insights into a number of aspects of photography. Proving very popular last year, a portraiture workshop will be conducted at various times across the weekend. The idea of this workshop is to demonstrate how to take photos of people using existing light and equipment that you have available at home. People are also encouraged to bring their camera along and pick up some tips from club members. A basic camera workshop will be conducted at various times over the weekend, providing visitors with useful and practical information about their camera and how to get the best out of it. Regardless of the type of camera, bring it along and the members of the Club will be happy to run through it with you. Another popular workshop is photo editing. This year for the first time we invite people to bring along a couple of photos that they have taken for some tips on how to process the image with a range of photo editing software. While most people have heard of Photoshop, there are a large number of other photo editing programs that are free, easy to use and can have a big impact on the final image. You are welcome to bring some images on a USB and Club members will show you how to edit them. The Beaudesert Camera Club’s Open Studio will be at the Centre, Brisbane Street Beaudesert on 20th and 21st May between 9 and 5 each day. For a full list of workshops and times go to the Beaudesert Camera Club’s website www.beaudesertcamera.org.au.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Cyclone Recovery Period
The recent ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie event caused significant damage to our road and bridge network, especially to gravel roads and shoulders. The initial estimate of damage is $40 million and it will take some time to rebuild all this infrastructure - up to 18 months in some cases. As a number of parts of the Scenic Rim were disaster declared, Council will be eligible for reconstruction assistance under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement which is funded jointly by the Queensland and Federal governments. All reconstruction projects will need to be assessed and documented to meet the funding criteria, which means it will take time and patience from us all as a community. In the meantime, emergent works and the clean-up continue. Duck Creek Road at Kerry remains closed at this stage due to extensive damage and Lamington National Park Road from Sarabah upwards is open only to O’Reillys overnight guests and suppliers under conditions from the Department of Transport and Main Roads. The damage on this road was extensive, with 76 landslides over a 12km stretch. I am pleased to advise that the scheduled shoulder widening on the section of Lamington National Park Road, just outside Canungra, will continue as planned. Council’s website has links to various government sites for natural disaster funding for primary producers and small businesses. We are very lucky to have BlazeAid come to the area to assist dairy farmers and other primary producers with fence repairs. I am happy to be contacted by any residents who have concerns or are seeking further information following this event.
Bridge Renewal Programme
Council has applied for funding under Round Three of the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme for the replacement of nine bridges in the region, three of which are on Beechmont Road - Back Creek Bridge, Botan Bridge and Sharp Bridge, also Cavell Bridge at Boyland. If successful, funding will allow replacement of these ageing timber bridges ahead of schedule.
Open Studios
Beechmont and Canungra will host our local artists’ Open Studios on the weekend of 3rd and 4th June, with Wendi Trulson and Linda Brown exhibiting their exquisite textiles and prints and hosting some workshops at Beechmont Community Centre. Acclaimed landscape artist Dave Groom will exhibit new works at his studio on Binna Burra Rd. This year, the Canungra Chamber of Commerce is hosting a number of artistsin-residence in various shops around town - just follow the red flags - and there will be a market/festival with food trucks and entertainment over both days. Erica Bates, textile artist, will be at Informed Conveyancing with her vintage inspired swimwear and clothing and many more local artists will have their unique works on display and for sale.

ANZAC Day Thanks and Congratulations
I was immensely proud of our students that marched and participated in the ANZAC Day service at D J Smith Memorial Park on Monday. A special acknowledgment to our school captains Erin and Brody who did a fine job reading fluently, expressively and confidently to the huge crowd. Our students clearly showed the wider community the respect, responsibility and community involvement that is key to our school.

Nature’s Gems
Hawaiian Goose or Nene Branta sandvicensis By Melissa Whitby
Give a Senior a Good Home this Winter Luna (Animal ID 58341) (Domestic medium hair cross, 15 years) Luna is a lovely older girl , who was found wandering the streets at the end of January at the age of 15 years! She has been in a foster home while being treated for an overactive thyroid , which is now under control with a special diet. She also has some health issues associated with old age. Luna would love a home to call her own, with a nice sunny spot to sit in, with no other cats to bother her, to live out her retirement years. Luna is vaccinated, wormed and microchipped and her adoption fee is $50.
Bono and Molly (Animal ID 59495 and 59496) (Domestic short hair, 11 years and 4 years) Bono is closely bonded with his partner, Molly. They have always lived together and need to be rehomed together. Bono is a bit shy at the moment as he is new to the shelter, but we know his confidence will shine when settled into his new indoor lifestyle with his best friend. Molly is a lovely girl with a gentle, playful nature. Molly and Bono are looking for a relaxed indoor lifestyle.
For several years now, I have developed an intense interest in learning about bird life on islands and the conservation efforts being undertaken to stop species going extinct. This has led me to undertake overseas trips to New Zealand and New Caledonia and I have had the privilege of being able to undertake volunteer work in numerous endangered bird recovery programs. Early last year I became aware of the intense conservation efforts which are being undertaken in the Hawaiian islands to preserve the unique native bird species which still survive there. In March this year, I travelled to Kauai (one of Hawaiian islands) to volunteer with the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project. During my time on Kauai I encountered some of the unique endangered bird life, including the Hawaiian Goose or Nene. The Nene is the state bird of Hawaii and in the 1950s was rarely seen in the wild and was being pushed to the brink of extinction. A concerted conservation effort worldwide and in Hawaii has ensured that this beautiful goose species can now be seen in the wild on Kauai, the Big Island, Maui and Moloka’i due to successful re-introduction programs. The Nene is easily recognised by its buff-brown colouring with black head/bill and partially webbed feet. The diet of Nene consists of a variety of plant material including fruits, buds, flowers and leaves of certain plants and the seeds of grasses. This goose species nests from August to April and the nest is well-concealed and lined with down. Kauai has the most robust population of Nene due to the lack of introduced mongoose species which predate on nests. Nene are also vulnerable to predation by other introduced species such as cats, dogs, rats and pigs. I encountered Nene in several locations on Kauai. The birds appear to not be fazed by humans and have set up residence in golf courses throughout the island. They are also easily observed at the Kilauea Point and Hanalei National Wildlife Refuges on Kauai. Overall, the Nene appear to be holding steady compared to their native forest counterparts. For anyone travelling to Hawaii and wanting to see these birds, I would suggest checking their status on the island which The Hawaiian Goose you are visiting and then head to the or Nene nearest National Wildlife Refuge!

A Nutritious Feast In Every Candle Banksias are excellent plants to encourage native animals to your garden, they are native to Beechmont and to Lamington National Park. The flower heads on Banksias are sometimes called ‘candles’. They are comprised of 100s and 100s of filaments, each of which is an individual reproductive flower. Each individual flower is laden with pollen and filled with copious quantities of nectar. A variety of vertebrates and invertebrates ensure the pollination of the flowers while feeding. Banksias are heavy producers of nectar, making them an important source of food for “nectivorous” animals, including honey eaters and small mammals such as rodents, antechinus, honey possums, pygmy possums, gliders and bats as well as insect larvae, moths and weevils.
By Susan Cully Many of these animals are nocturnal operators and some banksia species are known to produce a stronger odour at night just to cater for their inclinations. It is recorded that indigenous people also enjoyed the copious quantities of nectar either by sucking the flower spikes to obtain the nectar, or by soaking the flower spikes in water to make a sweet drink. The insect larvae associated with the Banksia were also extracted for food. Honey eaters have evolved alongside Banksias, developing a brush-like tongue to maximise nectar extraction and consumption. Birds that do not consume insects need to source proteins. The unique nectar found in Banksias contains amino acids, proteins and other substances essential for the

birds’ well-being as well as the desirable sugars. The efficiencies of the brush tipped tongue have also been achieved, through evolutionary development, by the small possums. All of these species consume pollen, and it is while covered
in pollen themselves that they fertilize the flowers ensuring the development of viable seed. These plants are threatened by a number of processes including clearing, frequent burning and disease. A number of species are rare and endangered.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough How quickly the year is passing by! In the past two weeks, we have celebrated Easter and Anzac Day and both occasions can be very important in our lives. Easter, and Anzac Day are both times when many of us stop to reflect on what has happened in the past and to look to the future with renewed hope and gratitude. St Luke’s was almost filled on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Such big numbers in our little church gave us much pleasure as we welcomed visitors and friends. Archdeacon Valerie Hoare gave a message of hope, forgiveness, and thankfulness for our abundant lives. The Anzac Day march and service at the Cenotaph was moving and emotional as we remembered the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who fought so we might live freely and abundantly. We should all take time in our daily lives to pause and remember the messages of hope for peace and forgiveness that we have heard both at church and on Anzac Day. I felt very proud to be part of the Canungra community for both these occasions. You may recall last month I mentioned the need to make some important decisions about painting St Luke’s. The Guild meeting was held, sample colours discussed and a decision has been made. Hopefully within the next month or so the changes will be happening. We at St Luke’s are excited and hopefully you will enjoy the new colour scheme. Remember however, it’s what is on the inside that really counts.

CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB IS OPEN! By Kim Sami
GREAT NEWS! The CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB’S FULL COURSE The Committee of the Canungra Area Golf Club would like to sincerely thank all of the amazing people who assisted us to get the golf course up and functioning again. In particular we would like to acknowledge the Kokoda Barracks and their contractors who expedited the repairs to Tinny’s Crossing allowing us to access the back of the course. Also our truly remarkable team of volunteers who get in and do what needs to be done without any fuss. Sandy and Bruce deserve a big pat on the back for being positive, flexible and patient throughout the event and then getting on with the job as soon as they could. We would like to thank the Boonah and Beaudesert Golf Clubs for their generosity in offering our members a temporary home

Unfortunately, our swinging bridge has not been repaired yet so we will be seeing some super fit walking golfers around town after having to tack an extra couple of hundred metres onto their rounds of golf. We are back to business as usual with a couple of Monthly Medal events to catch up on. Looking forward to seeing everyone back out on the course doing what they love.

especially considering most of them have only just become qualified. Thanks to Zac, Aiden, Patrick, Kasey, Lily, Ally, Connor, Erynn, Willow, Jett, Jarod, Jacob and Chloe for their support. We have noticed a number of larger Gold Coast clubs let the players down by not providing the correct number of referees for games, particularly the senior ones, so we’re proud to have this many members helping us out (and the pay is pretty good too!). Don’t forget to keep up to date with what’s happening at the club via our Facebook page! We have Friday and Wednesday night games usually from 6.15pm, which are both a great opportunity for our community to support our Club. Everyone is welcome to come down and cheer for our local team! Sport State Title Held at The Hall
Sunday 21st May will see the best Kickboxers gather at Canungra School of Arts Hall for the Queensland State Championships. Fresh from the Oceania Titles in Melbourne in March, three adult Oceania Champions are on the card, hoping to take the Queensland State Title to add to their belt collection. Eight Queensland State Title belts and a International belt between local World Silver medallist and Oceania Muay Thai Champion, Josh Torrens, versus the recently crowned Oceania Champion K-1 Kickboxer from New Zealand, Ollie Schmid. They will go toe to toe to see who is the best in the region at 60kg. Josh recently off a KO win, considered KO of the year in Queensland is local favourite but Ollie will be there for a war, which is what is expected from these two Champions. Also on the day will be three current Queensland State Muay Thai champions from Brisbane, Mackay and Gold Coast. Canungra is in for a great display of combat sport. All fights will be three rounds lasting two minutes which makes for an action packed display of fighting. Winners will travel to Melbourne to compete at the W.A.K.O. Australia National Championships in July against the best from NSW, WA and Victoria. Any local business that would like to get involved with the event please contact Francis on 0416 324 929 for sponsorship opportunities. Tickets for event are available from Canungra Hardware, Ginja Ninja and other local outlets. Also on display will be nine year old local Daniel Jones giving a display of Junior kickboxing against Kayne Welman as the opening bout. Both boys are fresh off wins at the WAKO Oceania Championships in Melbourne in March at the Arnold Classic international event.
Daniel Fights On
Local Fighter Daniel Jones is only nine old but recently fought in Melbourne at the WAKO Kickboxing Oceania Championships. This event, held in the Melbourne Exhibition centre over four days included the Arnold Classic Australia which was a fantastic opportunity for the young Canungra local to showcase his skills. Approximately 10,000 people passed through the event, taking in multiple martial Arts and Body building. One of the best known visitors to the event was former body builder, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Daniel was very composed and focused over the three days competing in three disciplines of Junior Kickboxing. With little experience in this style of event, Daniel came away with two Gold medals in Point Fighting Kickboxing and Kick Light Kickboxing, and a Silver in Light contact continuous Kickboxing. Daniel had six fights over two days representing local Muay Thai organisation SIAM Cup QLD and showed great composure for a young fighter. Daniel loved the experience and is already training hard for his next fight. Daniel has several fights coming up over the next year and is always looking for local business to help support his dream of becoming a World Champ one day.

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby There’s a lot on at Moriarty Park these days. We have Pilates on Monday nights at 6, Tuesday nights at 5.30 and Thursday nights at 6.30 with Alanna Phillips - 0409752997; Tai Chi on Wednesday mornings at 9 ; Yoga with Shirley at 9.30 on Monday mornings ; Gospel Road church group on Sunday mornings from 8.30 ; Dog obedience / tracking with Peter and Julie on Friday or Saturday nights depending on soccer games situation - 0411383188. Soccer of course in full swing so get along where you can to support our local talent ! Our second trivia night was a lot of fun and enjoyed by all who attended. The Weedy Garden Gnomes took out the big prize, with ‘We’ve got Wensleydale Gromett ‘winning best named team (shoulda seen the amount of cheese they had, in explanation!). Stu, our super compere, is off cruising and so our next trivia night hosted by Stu will be 22nd July. Due to demand, however Bren will have a crack at doing the questions at a trivia night on 20th May at 6.30pm. Usual byo nibbles drinks etc, and a bit of dosh for a raffle ticket or five. FoodWorks again sponsoring the event. Interpreter provided in form of George. It’s a fun, affordable night out that makes a
little bit of money for a variety of causes. Thanks everyone for coming and spread the word please !!!! Huge thanks to FoodWorks for providing the prizes, and to Tracey from Glittering Glass n Gems for her sparkling gorgeous champagne flutes for the raffle. We decided to donate the raised funds this time to a few local families who had mud and water come through their homes in the recent cyclone... it’s not an earth shattering amount but it’ll get them a nice dinner and a couple of treats perhaps and they will know we are thinking of them and that we care
STOP PRESS
Bren asked the Canungra Op Shop if they would consider matching the money made at the trivia night and make the gifts to the local families a little more substantial...well mark my words, they absolutely were in for that and increased the amount we made twentyfold! And some!! I even checked in case it was a typo but these guys are incredible and have done so much both locally and far afield. Thank you, thank you! Gifts will be delivered in form of FoodWorks vouchers or similar. The fitness modules erection should be underway shortly, and a new ant treatment, supplied by Bridon Spraying, will be used
very soon. Moriarty Park received a recent grant from Scenic Rim Regional Council for $1000 for the ant treatment. Please understand we will never eradicate them but will endeavour to keep them at bay! Moriarty Park would like to thank the Council not only for the aforementioned grant but for helping out fixing a variety of issues we have had lately with toilet lights, leaking taps and failing power points. Thanks to Graham Andrews for swiftly coordination these tasks be seen to. Moriarty Park would love to have a Secretary if anyone would like the position? Not a great deal to do as Bren is a shocking control freak and does a fair bit of the Secretary stuff anyway. Basically just the minutes and the odd letter have a chat with Bren or come along to the next meeting if you think you can help. Our AGM at the last meeting saw the same committee re- elected essentially, but lacking a Secretary, with Bren holding two positions for the time being. Meetings (all are welcome) are on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm. We are still seeking Sportsperson nominations so please step up!!

2017 Aquis Champions Tour
The Aquis Champions Tour attracted riders from around Australia to Elysian Fields, just outside Canungra. The world class show jumping event was held over 21st to 23rd and 26th to 30th April, with 300 riders, 750 horses and record crowds. Visitors were treated to perfect weather in which they could sit on the hill and watch the show jumping in action, with plenty of food and drinks available from the trade village. The main event was held on Sunday 30th April. The hotly contested Aquis Gold Cup had prize money totalling $50,000. The Cup was won by 2016 Australian Show jumping Champion, Jamie Kermond riding Yandoo Oaks Constellation, second was Steven Hill riding Yalambi’s Bellini Star and third was Stuart Jenkins on Fairview Aliquidam. The final event for the Tour was the Gollan Racing Speed Derby which had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The Derby was won by 16 year old Madeline Sinderberry riding Fernhill Zinzan

The Aquis Champions Tour provided a much needed boost to Canungra’s economy with many of the businesses in the area recording large increase in turnover during this event.
Sport Sporting Service Rewarded
Michael Mahony was rewarded for over 15 years service to the Tamborine Mountain Cricket Club at their presentation night on Saturday 22nd April. Michael was awarded a Life Membership of the Club in recognition of his valued contribution to the Club and the whole sporting community. Always a keen cricketer, Michael joined the Club when he was only 16 years of age. He quickly got involved in all aspects of the Club, joining the Committee and becoming Captain of his team very early in his cricketing career. He played with and against men many years older than himself, and always showed great maturity and a commitment to his team and players during games. Michael has also been on the Committee for the Moriarty Park Community Centre for many years, contributing to the running and maintenance of this community run facility. At the age of 17, Michael was named Gold Coast Cricketer of the Year for his contribution to the Tamborine Mountain Cricket Club. Mick played his 200th game of cricket with the Club this year, and has played a total of 206 games with them. He is well known in the Club and by Moriarty Park Committee members as a hard worker who adds great spirit to the organisations he is part of. Mick will be leaving to go to Canada this year and will certainly be sorely missed by the Club and the local community.
