Canungra Turns Out for Fallen Soldiers

It was a moving Dawn Service at Canungra’s D J Smith Park on Anzac morning. A large crowd gathered to remember those who have lost their lives and those who are still serving in conflicts across the globe today. Many people attended both the Dawn Service and the parade and morning service. The parade began at Canungra State School and included serving members of the Defence forces; veterans from several conflicts, including Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and Korea; Canungra State School students; Canungra Scouts; Scenic Rim SES volunteers and

In his keynote address, Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Robins CSC, said Anzac Day commemorations over the past few years had rightly concentrated on the centenary of battles fought in World War One, at the time known as ‘the war to end all wars’. Sadly, this was not the case and 2019 marks 80 years since the start of World War Two, a war which continued for six years and took over 50 million lives worldwide. Canungra RSL Sub Branch President, Col Lee, addressed the school children in the crowd, giving his appreciation of the respect shown by those who attended and marched.

Following the service, wreaths were laid by the Canungra RSL Sub Branch and a number of organisations from Canungra and the surrounding districts, including Jon Krause MP and Scenic Rim Regional Councillors Virginia West and Nadia O’Carroll. In a moving tribute, the Eldridge family, laid wreaths for Stephen Eldridge, a veteran who served in the Australian Army and lived in Canungra until he passed away early this year. Stephen’s wife Vicki laid the first wreath, followed by their children, Kyle, Taylor, Pearce and Molly. Lest we forget.
