Turning Canungra Pink in October
Canungra spent October draped in pink and abuzz with events to raise funds and awareness for all types of cancer. The month began with Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz, attending the Pink Launch at Holli Dolli and KD’s Antiques. Scott was not the only celebrity in attendance. Instagram sensation, Harriet Biker Dog rode in and posed for photos with a pink Triumph motorcycle. The motorcycle theme continued the Charity Motorcycle Ride, organised by Phil Chadwick of Canungra Auto Clinic. The month of festivities culminated in the Canungra Campout and Pink Dinner. A great weekend of camping drew people from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to enjoy the beautiful surroundings at the Canungra Sports and Recreation Grounds (Canungra Showgrounds). The Pink Dinner was a camp oven feast prepared by Ranger Nick. This was followed by a traditional bush dance which had everyone dancing. Turning Canungra Pink Coordinator, Nicole Krause said this year’s Pink events had extra meaning after the devastating fires in our region. “It has really been part of the recovery process,” said Nicole. “It has been a great opportunity for our community to create some wonderful events and new friendships,” said Nicole. Celebrating 65 Years Serving the Scenic Rim
Caltex Canungra has been operating for 16 years, but the history of the business goes back 65 years to when Lahey and Walker commenced operation in September 1954. The partnership was formed by Mervyn Lahey, his sister Maureen Walker (nee Lahey), her husband Tutin Walker, their sons Lawrie and Grahame and their wives Dell and Glen. The business started out carrying milk from dairies around Beaudesert to Brisbane in 10 gallon cans and they also had the Ampol Distributorship for Beaudesert area. In the early days, Tutin Walker delivered fuel to farms and businesses in 44 gallon drums on the back of a small Chevrolet truck. His visits were welcomed by children on the farms as he always added a delivery of mintie lollies to the fuel delivery. The first headquarters for Lahey and Walker was at the family property, “Jandeera”. As the business grew, a workshop was built in Selwyn Street in Beaudesert using timber milled in the Lahey family sawmill (now Enright’s Sawmill). Vehicle maintenance was carried out by Mervyn, Lawrie and Grahame at night so the vehicles were ready for work the next day. A fuel depot was built on the Mt Lindesay Highway and fuel and oil was sold from there until a new depot was built in 1974.
Three generations of Walkers
The main activity of the business during this time was still milk cartage, although the Ampol Distributorship was gaining momentum. As bulk milk vats became common in dairies, Lahey and Walker moved into bulk milk tankers and were one of the first businesses in Queensland to do so. In 1987 Lahey and Walker sold the milk cartage component of their business to the United Milk Producers Co-Operative Association and concentrated on their Ampol Distributorship. In the early days they carted all their own fuel and oil from Brisbane to Beaudesert and then distributed to their customers from their Beaudesert base.

Later, later they hired contractors to cart product for them. The company moved into retailing petrol in the early 1990’s and opened Caltex Canungra in June 2003. They currently operate four service stations, three in Beaudesert and one in Canungra. They also operate four bulk fuel delivery vehicles covering all parts of the Scenic Rim. Lahey and Walker currently employs over 30 people who live and work in the Scenic Rim. Although Grahame and Glen Walker are the only surviving original partners of Lahey and Walker, the company is still very much a family operation with some fourth generation members now part of the team.

Public Concerns Ignored Re Bushfires
The Liberal National Party is calling for a public inquiry into the September bushfires in the Lamington National Park, Illinbah and Sarabah valleys after members of the public and local rural fire brigade volunteers raised a range of serious issues with the LNP. “We are extremely grateful that no lives were lost in these fires. Feedback about decision-making during the fires, with six different bodies involved in decisionmaking, has seen concerns raised that affected the management of the fire, properties and wellbeing of residents,” said Shadow Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Lachlan Millar MP. Mr Millar said he had been told that people had received “robocalls” in the middle of the night when they could see no fire and didn’t know if the call applied to their particular circumstances. “These sorts of issues are exactly why I called for a public, bipartisan, parliamentary inquiry after last year’s bushfires. Instead, we had an internal review. So we will never know what concerns were raised.” “Now the Minister has arranged for exactly the same internal review by the Inspector General into these fires, but people aren’t buying it this time. Residents have

plenty of feed-back to give, but they don’t want it buried. They don’t want it massaged. They want to make that feed-back publicly so they can see some results,” said Mr Millar. Jon Krause MP backed Mr Millar’s call. “This is a part of Queensland where local knowledge is vital because of rugged terrain and local trails. However, it has always been
a part of Queensland that locally managed and understood its fire risks very well. That needs to be taken into account,” said Mr Krause. “I would also highlight that my constituents are still picking up the pieces after these fires. They are struggling with decontamination of water supplies, rebuilding and emotional trauma,” he said.

Eat Local Week Recognised For Driving Economy
An annual foodie event which started from humble beginnings nearly 10 years ago has earned the Scenic Rim a national award for driving economic prosperity. Scenic Rim Eat Local Week 2018 won the ‘Economic Development Single Event or Activity’ category at the National Economic Development Awards in Adelaide on 24 October. The Scenic Rim Regional Council outshone a record number of entries from across Australia to win the award. Council’s submission for the award was based on 2018 Scenic Rim Eat Local Week, which attracted 40,000 people to the region and contributed more than $2 million to the local economy. Local dairy farmer and agritourism leader Kay Tommerup of Tommerup’s Dairy Farm said the economic benefits of Eat Local Week were invaluable year-round. “The actual movement of Eat Local, beyond Eat Local Week, is huge for all of us. The publicity and the recognition that we have gained over the years means that we now have an audience of chefs, cafes and all those people who’ll come to us directly,” she said. “The Scenic Rim brand really stands for something, and collectively we offer an authentic, character-filled experience through the food of our region.” Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said winning at the National Economic Development Awards reinforced the clear value of the region’s food and drink industries.

Smart Pup Could Change Penny’s Life
In 2014, Penny McCullagh developed intense pain in her left foot. This quickly spread to both feet and legs, and before long her entire body was wracked with pain. Eventually, Penny was diagnosed with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a debilitating condition that is characterised by continuous pain. CRPS is also known as Reflex Sympathetic dystrophy. The McGill Pain Index, a scale for rating pain, ranks CRPS highest, above childbirth, amputation and cancer. Since CRPS is a systemic problem, potentially any organ can be affected. Many people with CRPS are unable to work, wear clothing on the affected area or walk without mobility aids. “CRPS has affected every aspect of my life,” says Penny, “Prior to CRPS I was a healthy, active mum, self employed professional who loved hiking and the outdoors. Now I use a range of mobility tools,” she said. Penny says any situation can cause a flare up, which means she is unable to place any pressure, even a light breeze or sheet on the affected area without extreme pain. These flare ups can last for weeks/months, during which she is completely immobilized

Penny has been approved for an assistance dog, called a ‘Smart Pup’ and is fundraising to help raise the $20,000 needed. On Saturday 9th November Penny will hold an animal feeding day and sausage sizzle from 11am to 2pm at 439 Darlington Range Road. Everyone is invited to come along and feed the McCullagh family’s friendly donkeys, cows, chooks, geese and duck.

It would help ease the stress our family experiences due to this extremely limiting condition,” she said. “I would never ask unless I needed to. This assistance dog is vital to allowing me to get more from life, for my family and I,” said Penny. ‘Very Little Financial Support’ for Fire Affected
Concerns have been raised about the recovery process for people affected by recent bushfires, with financial support for most people limited to the $180 Emergency Hardship Assistance Grant. Community Recovery teams, consisting of people from Lifeline, Red Cross and Department of Communities have been contacting those affected by phone and in person, however much needed financial assistance is has been slow and residents say the paperwork and eligibility make it an onerous task to apply for the funds. Illinbah resident, Loretta Mineo lost fencing and her fruit orchard was burned out, but her real concern was for her air conditioning units and water pump which were also damaged. “My husband is one of the most disabled veterans in Australia and depends on the air conditioners and other breathing equipment to breathe properly,” said Loretta. “It took four tries to claim the $180 per person support. We found out that the problem initially was our address in Illinbah wasn’t originally included as being affected by the fires ... although next door was.” Loretta is a charity sewer who spent much of her time during the fires sewing pouches for injured wildlife. She was visited by the Community Recovery team, but they were unable to assist with money to repair the water pump and air conditioners. “The Community Recovery people were very nice and saw how much we needed help so of their own accord they asked the Red Cross and Samaritan’s Purse to come and see us along
with three other people from other places and Government Departments. They told us they could see how much we needed assistance and they believed we deserved help. We were so grateful for them coming and I have to say that it was really nice to have such beautiful people in our home,” she said. Loretta was informed that she was not eligible for further government financial assistance. “Unfortunately this leaves us with lost fencing, a burnt out fruit orchard, four contaminated air conditioners heading into a hot summer and a dodgy house pump,” she said, “I had my cry and just went back to my sewing machine and began sewing again.” Sherylee Muir-Smith, whose Beechmont home was lost in the fires, said she is left angry about the way her family was treated and the perception that people who lost houses receive substantial financial support. She said this perception has come about because of the visits by the Prime Minister and Queensland Premier. “The Prime Minister took a media pack on to our property and splash our tragedy all over numerous media sources, without our knowledge or consent,” said Sherylee. “My children and myself, much to our astonishment saw this on the news! And kept on reliving the trauma daily as it was plastered everywhere.” “We have received very little financial support from the government as most of the funds are not given to people who have insurance, no matter how little the insurance. The people who are helping the most is friends and family and the support crew

She was told she would be contacted about this but almost two weeks after the visit she had not heard back from them. “I work on the Gold Coast and most people think that people who lost houses are getting substantial financial support from the government - this is not true !” she said. Steve Moriarty spent six days fighting fires with the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade. He was called home when the fires threatened his Sarabah property. The damage to his rural property and the Council road that leads to it was significant. “Those of us (including our families and loved ones) directly impacted, remain shocked and traumatised by the ferocity of the fire on the afternoon of Friday 6th of September as it tore through our properties, destroying everything it its path,” said Steve. “Since the fire, my neighbours and I have spent many days replacing fences and other infrastructure lost, as well as handfeeding stock already hungry due to drought conditions, all the while trying to get on with life as normal. I understand that for politicians and others, the fire is just a memory, but I can assure you for those of us who bore the full brunt of the fire and continue to live with the memory, it will take some time to fully recover,” he said.

A Change of Heart This month’s column began as an angry rant about visits from politicians and a subsequent lack of follow through on their part with regard to funding. However I had a change of heart. Not about the politicians (you can read that rant on The Canungra Times Facebook page), but about you. About the readers, the advertisers, the community who support each other so well. We have just had Turning Canungra Pink following one of the most affective episodes of our history, and yet people, still traumatised by what they went through in the fires, have banded together to support members of our community battling cancer. I’ve seen people who had fires go through their properties and people whose homes burned down, still supporting the events during October and I can tell you, it made me really proud of who we are and where we live. People like Monique Morcus, who spent days on end with no sleep during the fires, driving through fire affected areas to evacuate horses at all hours of the day and night, running her business as well and who then backed up and put together what was one of the best events we have seen - the Canungra Campout. This was a huge effort, especially as a new event with online ticketing and people coming from Brisbane as well as locals. Monique had a great team of volunteers, but I know how much time and effort she put in. Monique has been part of Turning Canungra Pink for many years and continues to support a lot of community events in Canungra as well as other fundraisers. I often wonder where she gets the energy, but we are very lucky she does! There was a great team of people who helped out throughout the month, and the other person who needs to be mentioned is Nicole Krause. Nicole took on the Coordinator’s role part way through this year, probably without realising what she was in for - and certainly not realising that her property was to be impacted by bushfires. Nicole pushed forward with all events, supporting other volunteers and always smiling! She gathered a great team around her and looked after everyone very well. It is again testament to our community that people like Nicole, and Monique are happy to volunteer to put their own time and energy into these events for the benefit of the entire community. Page 16

Dear Keer, Many thanks to our Mayor Greg Christensen for his hard work and dedication shown to our small community during the recent bush fire emergency. Greg was constantly on the front line, be it up in helicopters or at base camp lending a helping hand. He is a front line man and does not shy away from adversity. Connor’s Championship Ride
Local equestrian, 11 year old Connor Lane won the 2019 Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Championship in Equestrian Showjumping. Connor competed against the best primary school aged children in the country to take out the events on his horse, Roseagle Earl. Connor and his family moved to Ferny Glen four years ago from Mount Nathan. His mother, Taqwa, said Connor goes to and competes for Tamborine Mountain State School and was very excited to be selected to be part of the Queensland team selected to go to nationals. Connor’s entire family are keen equestrians and his sister won two National titles two years ago. Held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre this year, the Championships attracts more than than 2,000 competitors, family, friends and supporters from 100 schools from across Australia to compete in Showjumping, Eventing and Dressage. Competitors, aged 5-18 years old, are required to qualify through from the State Interschool Championships to the Australian Interschool Championships. Organisers said the Champioships is continuing to grow and is a major focus

for young equestrians like Connor. It is the largest equestrian grassroots program delivered nationally in Australia.

After nine years she has decided that it is time for her life to change direction. Shelby has recently sold inStyle Canungra in order to follow her dreams. Over her time in Canungra Shelby has contributed to many community events, including donating a free hair cut every week to Canungra State School. Most recently she discovered her passion for motorcycles and started racing competitively across the country. She has now decided to follow her heart and continue racing, riding and working with bikes. In her last week Shelby had the opportunity to see most of her loyal customers, but said she would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported her. Customers said they would miss Shelby’s infectious smile and bubbly personality but wish her all the best on her next adventure.

Jakota Karate’s first grading took place on Saturday 12th September. The two hour assessment covered karate techniques, kata, fitness, safety knowledge and self defence. Works Near Completion On Depot
Works are nearing completion on Scenic Rim Regional Council’s new Canungra depot which will enhance its service delivery to communities in the region’s east. Councillors and members of the leadership team recently inspected progress in construction of the new depot, located within the footprint of the Canungra Waste Transfer Station on the Beaudesert-Nerang Road, which has been welcomed by Division 3 Councillor Virginia West. “This new and larger facility will replace the depot in Pine Street and enable us to better meet the needs of the communities of Canungra, Tamborine, Tamborine Mountain and Beechmont,” she said. “As part of our Depot Strategy, it aligns with the shared Community Plan vision for an accessible and serviced region which aims to ensure Council’s buildings and facilities meet current and predicted service level requirements.” Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Beaudesert-based firm Franklin Constructions was the successful tenderer for the construction of the depot’s buildings, with Council’s own crews undertaking the bulk earthworks, pavement and surfacing. “Work on the buildings is expected to be completed by the end of this month and we are hoping to complete the relocation of the depot from its current site at Pine Street by the end of November 2019,” he said. “The depot’s expansion reflects the anticipated growth in our region and the growth in the demand for Council’s road and park maintenance services.”

When Lunch Involves a Play in the Park By The Full-Bodied Foodie When one of your closest friends lands a job managing a cafe close by, you just have to go and check it out! So when The Blonde Bombshell started at Cafe Sofi in Helensvale, I had to give myself a bit of creative licence to step outside Canungra and out into the big, wide world of the Gold Coast. And I’m glad I did. Cafe Sofi is part of a new leisure centre in a planned housing developments, an upmarket style that is becoming more and more popular these days. Stepping inside, the decor is modern and welcoming and sure to appeal to the ‘mums who brunch’ market. Diners can choose between sitting inside or al fresco, but the big difference with this cafe is the great playground which is close enough to be able to watch the children play while you eat, but not so close as to disturb diners without children. The menu has all the favourite cafe fare, from Smashed Avo to Eggs Benedict for breakfast and Pizzas, burgers and a selection of salads all made fresh by the Chef. Gluten free and vegetarian options are available. I visited Cafe Sofi with The Dragon, and
Dragon’s ‘daughter’. We all chose burgers which came served with chips. My lamb burger was fantastic and the chips were some of the best chips we’ve had. Unfortunately, soon after our visit the menu changed significantly but there is still a very good range on offer as well as some beautiful salads in the cabinet. The service was outstanding - The Blonde Bombshell is in her element here and it shows. Friendly and welcoming, there is
still that modern Gold Coast feel to Cafe Sofi. It is nice to find a little ‘home away from home’. The cafe certainly is in a lovely setting and has a resort feel to it. State Honours Ensemble
Nine Canungra State School students from Years 5 and 6 have been selected to participate in the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) at Griffith University. This is an educational program for music students that helps extend and encourage their pursuit of musical excellence. SHEP is held annually at the Queensland Conservatorium at South Bank and will be ringing
together young people from all over the State to share their passion for making music. These Canungra students will have the opportunity to work in an intensive environment of musical excellence with their peers, offering a unique opportunity to extend and develop their musical skills. They will also be coached by eminent conductors from the Conservatorium and be able to represent Canungra State School (in full uniform) in a Grand Finale Concert on Sunday on 2nd June.

If you are experiencing hip, buttock, hamstring or sciatic pain then you may be suffering from Piriformis Syndrome. Piriformis syndrome is a disorder which occurs when your sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated by the piriformis muscle as it passes through your buttock, resulting in pain, often radiating up or down the sciatic nerve.

Your piriformis muscle originates mostly from the base of your spine and inserts onto the top of your thigh bone. It rotates your hip outwards. Your piriformis and your sciatic nerve both pass through a small opening in the pelvic bone called the sciatic notch. In some of us the sciatic nerve actually passes through the piriformis itself. This close proximity can be problematic. What are the Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome? • Pain is usually felt in one buttock and you may experience radiation of pain down the back of your leg (sciatica). • You may sit lopsided with your sore buttock tilted up. • You might walk with your foot turned out slightly.

The way you walk or the position of your foot on the ground might be causing your leg to rotate and thereby straining your hip rotator.

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch Known as ‘The Great War’ and ‘The War to End All Wars’, the First World War commenced on 28th July 1914 and ended with the signing of the Armistice on 11th November 1918. The carnage left behind by the end of World War I was staggering, with an estimated 10 million soldiers killed; an average of about 6,500 deaths each day. Millions of civilians were killed, wounded and misplaced. Australia, with a population fewer than five million, enlisted 416,809 men, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. World War I is especially remembered for its slaughter, it was one of the bloodiest wars in history. On 11th November 2019, commencing at 10.30 am, a service is to be held at D J Smith Memorial Park, to remember the fallen. Members of the Canungra area and visitors are encouraged to attend, but for those who cannot, please observe the ‘One Minute Silence’ between the bugle calls of ‘Last Post’ and ‘Rouse’. Let us not forget them.

St Hilda’s Church of England (Anglican) in Boyland was on Biddaddaba Road on land given by Mr Ronald Graham. The Building had been a hall in the Canungra church grounds and it was moved by Banks Pty Ltd. The first service was held in 1948 and on 3rd May 1953, St Hilda’s Church was dedicated by the Reverend H H Dixon. The last service was held on 5th March 1965. It was in need of renovations which were considered to be too costly. Worshippers then had the choice of attending services at Beaudesert, Canungra or Mundoolun. The organ, cross and altar from St Hilda’s were given to be used in the proposed chapel at Canungra’s Jungle Training Centre. The seats were given to St George’s Church, Tamborine Mountain. George Smith of Wonglepong bought the building for a farm storage shed. Prior to the opening of St Hilda’s, services were held in private homes. Mention has been made in 1917 of services at Tabragalba Estate - the early name for the area. Norman Summerville, a parishioner, served a term on St Thomas’ Parochial Council and he was a supporter of St Hilda’s. His wife, May, was the organist at St Hilda’s. VALE BILL HOYER By John Duley Bill Hoyer ran the ‘Wagon Stop’ on Beechmont Road and sadly passed away suddenly in the first week of October. Bill supplied half of Beechmont and many of the tourists heading for the Binna Burra and Sharp Park camping grounds with good hardwood “and a free bag of kindling” for their campfires. He also sold recycled wood to a lot of tradies and locals, and usually had anything else that people needed in his “junk yard”, of which he was very proud! All the money that Bill collected was donated directly to charities, his favourite being The Lower Beechmont Fire Brigade, and the Gold Coast Homeless Youth Project (of which Bill was chairman for about 18 years). Most days Bill could be seen sitting outside the ‘Wagon Stop’ with his dog ‘Chewie’, waving to folks as they passed by. He had a prodigious memory for faces and names, and got to know a lot people who stopped for wood or directions, or a friendly chat. One day I asked him for a photo, and he insisted on a pose that he said had a hidden message. But first a brief history... Bill grew up in rural Indiana, in the tiny village of Helmer, where his parents ran
the local general store. Despite being “last in his class” at high school, Bill got into Indiana State University and gained a degree in Education, then taught in school during his early years. Besides education, Bill was also very keen on Country Music - he was a drummer, then later a guitarist, and started several bands. As a result, Bill said he knew “about 250 songs” and there wasn’t much of America that he didn’t see in his travels. Then he was offered a job working on McArthur River station, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, so he flew out to Australia for the first time. He eventually became co-manager of the station and through his intelligence and resourcefulness he made it financially successful. It was there that Bill fell for a visiting Swiss girl, Nora, and they married: Nora remained the love of Bill’s life and the solid rock for him in all the projects they did together. When the station was sold to BHP in 1994, Bill and Nora returned to the USA, where he completed a doctorate in Anthropology and Education, at Brigham Young University in Utah: Bill enjoyed his ‘hillbilly’ guise, his American colloquialisms and his country music knowledge, but underneath there was always a thinker and teacher.

Bill and Nora returned to Australia, where he taught at Gold Coast TAFE, and they moved to Beechmont Road. He was 76 when he passed away, leaving a huge hole in the local community and in the many groups and charities he and Nora supported. The community’s deepest sympathy goes to Nora. And the photo? Bill sat on the edge of a large wood box and posed as the famous statue by Rodin called ‘The Thinker’. He said the hidden message was: “Think outside the box!” This was typical of his approach to life.

The Department of Human Services has announced their Disaster Recovery Payment for those with significant damage to their homes. Now is the time for us all in the community to be particularly mindful of each other and how others might be feeling following the fire experience. Each of us deals with the emotions and feelings differently and at a differing level. It is ok to ask each other “are you ok” more often than we do.

What an eventful month of “pink” activities and congratulations to the very hardworking sub-group of Canungra Chamber of Commerce which coordinated and hosted this month-long event. These events have really united our community and the Women Like Us evening was especially positive for us all to laugh together. It was a fun morning and encouragingly very few pest fish were caught in that section of Canungra Creek. Some native fish were caught and released and all indications are that this section of Canungra Creek catchment is in good health.

Nature’s Gems - On the Trail of the Mighty Komodo Dragon Every person I know has a bucket list of things that they would like to do in their lifetime. For me, it is to see the world’s wildlife in their natural environment. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to travel to Indonesia to see the world’s heaviest lizard, the Komodo Dragon. These large animals are unmistakable with their large head, rounded snouts, muscular tails and bowed legs. Komodo Dragons are only found on a few islands located in the Nusa Tenggara region of Indonesia. These islands were protected in 1980 when the Komodo National Park was formed to protect the Komodo Dragons. The only way to get to these islands is by boat. I decided to go on an organised tour with an Australian company called Aaranya Wildlife Odysseys who use local Indonesian guides
at the Komodo National Park and who were able to organise a local boat operator who would be equipped to get me there. I flew from Brisbane to Bali, Indonesia and stayed overnight in Denpasar. From Denpasar, it is a short flight to Labuan Bajo, Flores where I was met by my guide and transferred to my live-onboard boat. For the next few days, we sailed between the islands of Komodo National Park and the experiences I had, I will never forget. We first sailed to Rinca Island and this is where the best views are to be had to of the Komodo Dragons. I have to say that I took a few steps back when I saw my first dragon as I did not see him at first and he was huge! Large males grow up to nearly three metres and can weigh in close to 100kgs! These large animals are carnivores that prey on animals such as Timor Deer and

After a day or so, we sailed to Komodo Island where I saw some dragons but it seemed more prolific with birdlife, which of course made me pull the binoculars out! Komodo National Park also has incredible marine environments and spectacular underwater life. I was also lucky enough to share the space of Manta Rays and go snorkelling in coral reefs that were home to abundant marine life. My time exploring Komodo National Park to see the Dragons was truly amazing and I would totally recommend this experience to all who have sense of adventure and love of wildlife.

Australian Native Land Snails By Susan Cully Walking through some burnt areas in Beechmont in the last two months it has been a bit hard to find something alive at ground level. A fungus has begun to appear, coloured orange, pink and white, Pyronema omphalodes is one of the first fungi found after fires. It is a saprophytic pyrophilous fungus - fire-lover. Recently, after rain, these Australian native land snails appeared. Many empty shells can be seen in the ash. Snails emerge from underneath leaf litter and logs to look for food. Most native land snails eat fungi and micro-algae, not plants. Snails have poor vision only detecting light from dark. They do have, however, thousands of teeth. Their teeth are microscopic and are used for cutting up food. They forage by moving around on their muscular flat foot. To avoid damage to their soft foot they continuously secrete slime, creating snail trails. Like many invertebrates, native land snails can be used as indicators of environmental health. If there is an abundance and diversity of native snails, then the habitat is likely to be in good condition. Land snails play an important role in decomposition of plant material and they probably help disperse fungal spores. Many animals eat snails, and even in death, snail shells are an important source of calcium for other animals. So next time you are outside on a rainy night, take the time to look around and appreciate our native land snails – there are hundreds of species in eastern Australia in all different shapes and colours. The snail pictured has a glass like shell and the markings on the animal within show through the shell.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough How many weeks until Christmas? That may seem like a silly question so early in the year, after all we are only just entering November, and yet the shops are advertising and pushing the Christmas theme. For many Christmas is a worrying time with the cost of gifts, worry of what to buy, who to invite and more. Wouldn’t it be better to let go of this commercial aspect of Christmas and remember the birth of Christ? Wouldn’t it be great if we could share a special day together, filled with love and happiness? Our annual Christmas Carols will take place again in the grounds at St Luke’s. Why not mark Wednesday 18th December on your calendar to come and enjoy a very happy time together. The Street Stall, postponed after the fires, will now take place on Saturday 23rd November in the main street outside the Butchery. Come and spend a little money to help St Luke’s and enjoy homemade or home-grown wares. We were recently blessed to have a visit at our Sunday Service by the new State School Chaplain, Katie Campbell and her husband. . We hope Katie will soon be able to increase her time with our children but funding is always an issue. One way we at St Luke’s are providing on-going financial support is by collecting empty cans and bottles. Please feel free by way of a donation, to drop your empty cans etc in at St Luke’s. Just leave them in the Pavilion at the rear of the church. We will then dispatch them and all financial gains will go towards the Chaplaincy funds. A very enjoyable service, followed by drinks and nibbles, was held recently for St Luke’s Day. St Luke’s Gospel is filled with a concern for people with all kinds of need. St Luke emphasized the power of prayer. Don’t be frightened to ask God to help you. Prayer really does work!

Having had a meeting with the Mayor and key players at Council, Keer and I essentially have not achieved what we set out to, due basically to red tape and legalities where a venue cannot be declared an ‘Evacuation Centre‘ (my terminology should have read ‘Refuge Centre’ btw as an ‘Evacuation Centre’ must have beds or some such thing but I think we all got the gist of my meaning) in case that venue happens to end up in the ‘line of fire’ and we are deemed dumb enough to still go there and put ourselves in danger. However we are pushing ahead to come to some arrangement where, as a community, we know regardless of the dangerous situation, be it fire or flood, whom to contact for advice and direction, and what to do for the best. Cricket have some games to be played at Moriarty Park again so come along for a relaxing afternoon of entertainment and refreshments. Moriarty Park is becoming a well used venue which is great. Thanks to all who attended, and supported in other ways, our Pink Bingo and Pink Trivia , both fun nights with $850 and $774.60 raised for Turning Canungra Pink respectively. Our next Trivia night will be 16th November at 6pm for a 6.30pm kick off. Cost is $5 per person with a maximum of six ‌ with of course a

raffle, and a bucket of refreshments on ice also available for a donation to aid the cause. BYO nibblies and drinks. We are looking to make some money for a local lass who is desperately in need of a Smart Pup; details at event. Stu will again be our super host. Look out for a Xmas Bingo date too. On 16th November there will also be an Aussie Fire Relief Fundraiser convoy which starts from The Showmen’s Club in Yatala and arrives at Moriarty Park around 10.30am; judging of Novelty Utes around 12 noon. This will be a fun packed day , with thong throwing competitions, kids fancy dress and more ‌ please see full ad for more details. Culminates at 4pm. Foodworks Canungra will be providing all the
gear for the sausage sizzle and soft drinks so come along for a relaxing fun day. To the low life/s who have dumped roosters by the creek ‌ don’t make your problems someone else’s. Be responsible. Be a decent human being in fact. Sportsperson of the Month is a young local showjumper with immense talent – Connor Lane. Connor is only 11 yet has achieved so much already with a win at Canungra Show this year followed by success at the Nationals in Sydney at the International Equestrian Centre. Being the first year of the event it was very well received and the camaraderie, friendship and banter make for 2020 to be even better. The winning team was Boomerang Farm with Tally Valley only 1 point behind. A special mention must go to one of our newest lady golfers – Kym Crook, who won the day with a lovely 44 points. Well done Kym we are all very proud of you. A highlight of the day was the special celebration of Irene Mills 94th Birthday.
