Canungra’s month of cancer awareness and fundraising gave visitors and resident the chance to enjoy a vast range of activites as well as raising a record amount of funds for cancer research. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Desley Bird said it was pleasing to see so many businesses and community organisations behind the event. “Everyone has workeding together this year to make Turning Canungra Pink a success,” said Desley. Many of the events, such as the High Tea, Pink Golf Day, Pink Bowls Day and Girls Day Out at Canungra Beauty, have run for several years and were again very popular. There were also new events on offer, including the Pink Car Rally and Live Fit Pink Aerobics Class. The Pink Car Rally attracted 25 cars and almost 100 people. Competitors decorated their vehicles and themselves, bringing a colourful cavalcade of cars to many areas the Scenic Rim. The day ended at Canungra Bowls Club with a barbecue and prizes, as well as a bowling activity for competitors. Several events were postponed due to wet weather, with the Community Garden’s Garage Sale held at Canungra Markets on 29th October and Valley View Equine Group’s Ride Wine and Dine and Canungra Country Fair postponed until 4th November. The Turning Canungra Pink Dinner, held at the Canungra School of Arts Hall, was very much a community event, with most businesses in town donating prizes, food, decorations or their time to help out.

Almost 200 people enjoyed an evening of good food and entertainment, with Pink Tribute band Raise Your Glass providing the music on the night and several local businesses and residents assisting with canapes and desserts. The main meal was prepared by volunteers from the Canungra Bowls Club and Bren Dalby, with the majority
of the food donated by the Wilson Family, Canungra FoodWorks and Dale Mahony. Canungra Chamber of Commerce Treasurer, Noela Lee said she expects the total raised from the 2017 Turning Canungra Pink events will exceed $30,000. More photos, pages 5 and 6.

Scenic Rim Tested During Get Ready Week
A forecast deluge set the scene for a Get Ready Week training exercise to test the Scenic Rim’s ability to respond to the threat of a natural disaster. The exercise last month saw Council staff join forces with emergency services personnel in establishing an incident management team, testing communications systems, reviewing the delivery of emergency alerts to the community and practising Local Disaster Coordination Centre procedures. Mayor Greg Christensen said the success of the exercise reflected the recent experience of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie. “The exercise provided the opportunity to build on the experience gained during late March and early April to ensure that we can meet the challenge of another natural disaster in our region,” he said. The exercise considered the scenario of rainfall of between 300 and 350 millimetres and the impact of a one-in-100 year flood event on a Scenic Rim community. With the scenario including road closures and landslips, the need to evacuate residents from homes threatened with inundation, high winds resulting in damage to properties and widespread disruption of electricity supply,
emergency services and Local Disaster Coordination Centre staff were put to the test. “The exercise modelled an impact on 10 per cent of the Scenic Rim region, which included flooding of 80 properties and 23 instances of damage to property but thankfully no loss of life,” Cr Christensen said. “Getting ready for storm season is as simple as making a plan for managing your pets if they are home alone, knowing what to do if you become separated from family
members and securing outdoor items which could become missiles in high winds. “Now is the time to gather what you might need in an emergency - a portable radio, torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, fresh water, non-perishable food, essential medication, waterproof bags, and have important documents in sealed bags or scanned to a USB so that you are ready well in advance.” For more information on how to prepare, visit qld.gov.au/getready

Park Naming - Back Creek Reserve
Girls Get Going is a wellbeing participation program for women and girls across the region, providing health and exercise programs to fringe communities that currently have limited or no activities available. The program will also promote the use of new venues for exercise opportunities at an affordable cost.
Council has received an application to name Lot 900 on SP269923, situated at Beechmont Road, Beechmont, currently known as Back Creek Reserve. Council intends to name the park Beechmont Pioneer Reserve and is seeking public comment on this or an alternative name. Submissions should include a brief rationale and comply with Council’s Roads and Places Naming Policy
Girls Get Going aims to provide a nonintimidating, friendly and female-only environment where participants feel safe and comfortable while they exercise. The Queensland Government provided $9500 to Scenic Rim Regional Council to the Girls Get Going program to get women and girls active for life. Council has provided cofunding to enable this program to launch.

Tamborine Mountain College has grown significantly since it became a complete campus Prep – Year 12. For the first time it was unable to literally fit into a venue on the mountain and has taken this important event to the Arts Centre on the Gold Coast. All students from Prep to Year 12 attended and over 300 family members attended as well as distinguished invited guests: • SRRC Councillors – Mr Nigel Waistell, Mrs Virginia West; • Academic Staff of Griffith University – Ms Laura Adric; Ms Jenny Strachen of Lions; • Ms Delma McCrea – Tamborine Mountain Chamber of Commerce; • Mr Rob Fuller – TMC Consultant; • TMC Board Members – Chairman Mr Michael Kyle, Mrs Maureen Nicholls, Mr Lance Cordingley, Mrs Virginia West, Mrs Alicia Haynes, Mr John Lamb, Mrs Sheila Ponting. This year has again been very busy for the College. Three Primary classes started double streaming this year, incorporating Vic and Val and more may occur next year. It is anticipated that all classes from Primary will have two classes soon, named Vic and Val, just like the Secondary classes. New Primary Buildings Platypus and Kookaburra were opened at the beginning of the year and the playground is planned to be constructed during the holidays. On the secondary campus The Maureen Nicholls Learning Centre will be officially opened on 9th Nov. The new Administration Centre is due to commence at the end of this year – a major project for 2018. The College again this year has many examples of victory and valour across the entire campus: • Year 12 success educationally is highlighted by early entry offers into university before OPs even come out – offers were made to our students from Griffith, Bond including Scholarship, Southern Cross and New England universities. • Lions Youth of the Year representation. • Debating Teams and Public Speakers competed successfully right through to the Finals. • French students gained recognition in competition. • Sporting achievements as part of the Independent Sporting Association for the major carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics. Several students went onto Regional representation as well as State success and National level too, including Snowboarding. • Arts Night displayed an outstanding quality of works, particularly honouring the most Page 10

TMC won the trophy again this year and Primary have been involved in Junior HIA. Drama Excellence presented “The Cagedbirds”. An intelligent play that was performed outstandingly. Pierre de Coubertin awarded again this year. Duke of Edinburgh students continue in their quest for Gold, Silver and Bronze. Leo Club and SRC have been busy raising funds and serving the community. Student stars celebrated for their “out of school” activities, including Ice Hockey in Hong Kong, Equestrian and Martial Arts to name a few. Camps and excursions to experience learning outside of the College classrooms. Year 12 House Captains directly involved in sport with the Primary. Sports Excellence Program achieved Certificate III in Fitness for several students. Band and instrumental music program continues to develop and entertain at events.
• Involvement with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, with a visit from Borobi, the mascot. • Graduating Year 6 class – a wonderful dinner planned next month. • Graduating Year 12 class – the Formal this year at the Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove. Mrs Melbourne, the Principal, gave tribute to TMC students, families and staff. She said, “It gives me great pleasure and joy to lead Tamborine Mountain College”. She also thanked the College Chairman, Mr Michael Kyle, and Board Members for their time and efforts again this year.

Community Plants Stolen
The Canungra Community Garden has been the target of unlikely thieves over the past month. It took two years of hard work and fundraising to find a suitable location and countless hours of volunteer labour to set up the garden with pathways, water tanks and plants. Strawberry plants that had been donated by Canungra Book Club and lettuces were stolen earlier in October, and it appears the thief came back a few weeks later to remove a rosemary bush. The Community Garden posted on their Facebook page, saying they were devastated by the loss of the plants. “We, the Canungra Village Garden team, are dedicated to providing opportunities for our community, free and low cost. We give away plants, and resources; we run free and low cost workshops. And this is why we all feel so devastated when someone feels it is okay to rip plants out of the ground to take home for themselves. Everyone loses. Except the person who thieves the plants. Enjoy all the strawberries and lettuces, thief (PS. strawberries put out runners anyway so there was really no need to pull the entire plant from the ground ...). I can only hope you actually really NEEDED them. We would have given you some, if only you asked.” “We’d just like to remind Thief that the community garden sits directly opposite the police station.” Local residents are asked to watch the garden when they are walking or driving past and ask that any suspicious activity be reported to the police.
Tell Us What You Wheelie Think Council is seeking community feedback in relation to its kerbside waste collection services. Mayor Greg Christensen said Council will soon be going to tender on a new long-term waste collection contract for 2019 onwards and wanted community input to help inform the process. “Before we commence the contract process, we want to capture feedback and ideas from the community about what residents and businesses would like to see included as part of a future suite of services,” Cr Christensen said. “This is an opportunity for residents to comment on how we should be diverting waste streams away from the landfill and how we manage the waste disposed of by our residents and businesses.” “The community ultimately plays a critical role in shaping the future direction of waste collection as the end user of these services.” The survey will be available on the Have Your Say section of Council’s website until Sunday 12th November. By completing the survey, respondents will go into the draw to win an Apple iPad 32GB or a Zero Waste Starter Kit (terms and conditions apply). To complete the waste survey www.scenicrim.qld. gov.au/have-your-say.
Communities Supporting Each Other
The Canungra RSL Sub Branch is not only a place where our community members and visitors can relax and enjoy a meal, it is an important resource for our returned service men and women. It also acts as a means of education for our younger generation, ensuring the ANZAC spirit is remembered. Recently the Canungra & District Community Bank was proud to support the Canungra RSL Sub Branch with the purchase of two digital photo frames, which are on display in the lounge area. “Having our own community bank in Canungra makes life so much easier for not only the RSL Sub-Branch, but also for our members, many who are getting on and don’t want the hassle of travelling. Our bank also gives us that personal approach, something you don’t find in the larger, haven’t got time for you organisations. On behalf of the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch Members, thank you Canungra & District Bank for the digital frames you kindly donated, and for your service and support to the local community,” Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub-Branch. On Saturday 11th November, the RSL will be conducting a Remembrance Service in DJ Smith Park, commencing at 10.30am, commemorating the 99th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in 1918. Anyone who is wanting to lay a wreath or floral tribute are welcome to do so. Keep your eye out on the RSL’s Facebook page for upcoming events and stay in touch with your Community Bank via Facebook.

A Little More Pink - from Aerobics to Dressed for School
Kym Crook from Canungra Beauty and Live Fit ran a Beauty Day and a Pink Themed Aerobics Class during October. The Aerobics Class attracted more than it’s fair share of pink 80’s themed outfits (pictured above) from the ladies who attended (men welcome and we hope to see a few of them next year!). The Canungra State School ran a Pink Day at the school, with Keiran McCabe (pictured right) getting right into the theme and dressing up in a pink cocktail dress for the day.

Christmas is just around the corner... So it seems that Christmas is just around the corner, again! I guess it is a sign of age that the years seem to go faster. Seems like yesterday it was the new year and now I’m counting down till Christmas. At the risk of sounding like a broken record (because I’ve been saying this for six years now, every year about this time), please think about your shopping choices this Christmas and in particular the consequences of where your money is going. Shopping locally benefits you, your community and no doubt your children or family. The handbag you buy locally means the shop owner can continue to do volunteer work in town that benefits your neighbour who has just been diagnosed with cancer - the money from Turning Canungra Pink might be paying for their transport to treatment, or for someone to help clean their house (or, God forbid, yours). Or maybe the groceries you buy locally mean your child’s soccer team has a coach or manager because that person has a job in town and doesn’t have to travel for hours to get to work - that travel time can be used to help out with local sporting groups. So before you spend this Christmas, think about what it is really going to mean for your community - as consumers we really have a lot of power in our hands, or our wallets.
What a great response the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee had to the
Young Driver Education evening with over 30 young drivers attending and lots of parents, 80 attendees in total. Feedback has been very positive. A very big thank you to our guest speakers- Mark from Canungra Police, Harry from Canungra Ambulance, Cameron from the Canungra Auxillary Fire Brigade, Sharon Bailey from Cruising Around driving school ,Ken Hill, Norm Graham. Your words of advise and experience were invaluable to our young drivers and a timely reminder for those of us who have been driving for many years. Another huge thank you to the Canungra Bowls Club for the use of their venue, Jenny from Fit In Print for designing the flyer and Keer for publishing this for free in two Canungra Times issues. Special thanks must also go to the Canungra & District Bendigo Bank for their Community Grant and ongoing partnership- another highly successful community event in our fantastic town which will be held again next year. Coach
Roscoe and Coach have been operating locally for a number of years, offering bus and coach charter services. Before moving with his family to South East Queensland, Roscoe did a number of tours around Australia and has extensive knowledge of the local area as well as the great South East. Roscoe currently has a 24 seater coaster, seven seater Kia carnival and a luxury four seater sedan to take you on any trips you and your friends would like to go. Tours can include local areas of interest such as wineries on Tamborine Mountain and in the Canungra area, rainforest waterfall walks, local art and craft shops, Glow Worm Caves on Tamborine Mountain as well as local lookouts. Day or half day tours can also be tailored to your needs. Roscoe specialises in these personalised tours for special events such as hen’s days, birthdays or corporate events. Some day trips can be as little as $30 per person and airport transfers are also available. Over the Christmas school holidays, Roscoe and Coach will be offering Christmas shopping trips and holiday theme park runs. Roscoe can be contacted on 0437 655 560, through his Facebook page or through his web site roscoeandcoach.weebly.com.
An application to form the Canungera Rifle Club was signed by 39 residents of Canungra, Wonglepong, Bennoble, Boyland, Tamborine Mountain, Mundoolan, and Pine Creek, and was Gazetted on 14th September 1907. Once a month a practise Shoot was held and trophies were given for competition twice a year. The range was in Franklin’s property in the valley looking east towards Tambourine Mountain between the Wonglepong Cemetery and the QCWA hall. The following men are named as members of the club in Canungra Heritage 1879 --1979: Jim Franklin - Wonglepong; Edmund Franklin Wonglepong; Stuart Franklin - Wonglepong; Harry Lea - Canungra; T J McGuiness; Barny Toohey Canungra (Teacher); Reg Rhoades - Pine Creek; A Martin - Canungra; C Reiser - Biddaddaba; Percy Summerville - Boyland; J Lawton - Canungra; Edwin Franklin - Witheren; A J Caswell - Wonglepong; W Wilkinson; W Caswell - Wonglepong; Joe Colvin - Wonglepong (teacher); Arthur Campbell Wonglepong (Captain). As most of the active members of the Club came from lower down Canungra Creek it was generally known as Canungra Lower Rifle Club. Arthur Campbell was Captain -- he had been in South Africa at the turn of the century supporting England in the Boer War. As many of the signatories on the Application lived a considerable distance from the range and transport was either “shank’s Pony” or, if lucky, a real horse it is not surprising that the regulars were those who lived closest. When the railway came from Jimboomba to Canungra in 1915 the rifle range was cut in half, and with more than one timber train a day the club closed.

The Airbnb of Farming
As drought again takes hold in parts of Australia, the nation’s largest landsharing website, Youcamp.com, has called on governments of all levels to recognise that opening up private land to tourism is a way to future proof regional Australia. Youcamp.com allows farmers and landholders to open their land to paying tourists. Hosts are able to list not just accommodation but also activities such as farm tours and any of the other countless types of “adventures” available on private land. Youcamp is the Airbnb of the outdoors and Airbnb for farmers. Many Youcamp hosts are discovering that setting up boutique tourism businesses is a way to supplement much needed on-farm income and also to create sustainable private land enterprises that are not subject to the vagaries of climate change. By bringing city Australians onto farms as visitors, it also creates a window into the lives of rural landholders and the challenges that they face. Many Youcamp guests are also coming to realise that some of the best and most spectacular campsites are actually on private land. In addition, many of the camping, glamping and other options listed on the website offer travellers greater privacy and choice. For example, many Youcamp properties allow guests to bring their dogs and horses. And it is not just the landholders who benefit. While visiting regional Australia, guests also spend money in communities they may not otherwise visit. Youcamp co-founder, James Woodford said while private land camping is legal across all of Australia, some governments make the process of approval excessively onerous and expensive. “We want to see more state and local governments follow the lead of more progressive councils such as Temora and Noosa, which are embracing the opportunities land sharing provides,” said James. “We literally get feedback that innovative ways, such as this, to make extra money from the share economy enables some families to stay on the land and provide employment opportunities for their children.” “We are also calling on city-based Australians to help their regional cousins by choosing a farm-based escape rather than heading to Bali, ” he said. Kokoda Barracks Opens to the Public
Department of Defence is providing a rare opportunity for the local community to spend a day at the Kokoda Barracks, marking the 75th anniversary of the opening. This event, scheduled for Saturday 4th November 2017 from 10am to 2pm, is the first time that the base has been opened to the public in over a decade. The community plays an important role commercially and with many civilian employees working on base. Due to security restrictions the public rarely get to see what the barracks where thousands of soldiers have trained. This open day offers an opportunity for local organisations and charities to come together, inviting members of the public to get involved in community activities. A guided bus tour of the base has been scheduled, including a tour of the planned stops to view the facilities. Planning is well underway for the open day and with a number of significant exhibits confirmed. These will include: • Several variants of Bushmaster armoured vehicles (PMV). • An armoured personnel carrier. • A heavy truck and trailer (new MAN diesel army vehicles). • A new infantry reconnaissance vehicle.
Bushmaster armoured vehicles will be on display at the Open Day
• A virtual driving simulator. • Defence recruiting display. • An Infantry section display showing equipment and weapons. • Artillery optical and fire control equipment. Kokoda Barracks was established in 1942 for Army jungle warfare training for troops
destined for combat in the Pacific region. It was closed in 1948 but reopened in 1954 and was used extensively to train for troops for service in the Vietnam war in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It is still used for jungle warfare and infantry training, with Defence Intelligence facilities on the site.

pain
Low back pain is one of the most common complaints that individuals experience today. If you have ever experienced low back pain you will know that it can be debilitating. You may not even notice it immediately after an injury because the body is great at compensating and accommodating strains. However, if the disruption to spinal mechanics is too much and the body is unable to continue to adapt, then symptoms will arise. Low back pain can be triggered by numerous activities: • Emotional stress; • Illness; • Pregnancy and child birth; • Physical over exertion; • Twisting, over-stretching or bending incorrectly; • Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling incorrectly; • Slouching and bad posture; • Extended periods of standing or bending down; • Overuse of the muscles, usually due to sport or repetitive movements (repetitive strain injury); • Physical workers whose occupation involves excessive bending, twisting and hard physical labour; • Prolonged periods of sitting, such as drivers or officebased workers; • Driving in a hunched position; • Driving for long periods without taking a break.
TCP Dinner
Low back pain can be triggered by numerous activities
Sometimes minor strains give more pain and may take longer to heal than expected. This could be because the body has reached the limit of its ability to cope with the combined effects of past injuries, and any new demand (even if a seemingly small demand) is ‘the final straw’. When you visit Grassroots Healthcare Osteopathic Clinic with low back pain, we will give you a thorough examination, find the stressed and strained muscles and skeletal parts contributing to your back pain, develop your treatment plan and start your treatment. With decreased pain and better function, our aim is to get you quickly returned to your regular activities.

Topographical Artwork Puts Canungra On The Map
Mayor Greg Christensen and Division 3 Councillor Virginia West inspect Canungra’s new gateway art installation.
A steel sculpture depicting the local landscape now stands as a gateway to the Scenic Rim, putting Canungra on the map. Sited near the School of Arts Hall and constructed of layers of machine-cut steel, Strata Canungra, a 2.9-metre high topographical representation of the surrounding area, is the latest landmark gateway to what will eventually become the Scenic Rim Tourist Trail. Mayor Greg Christensen said the installation, part of Council’s Vibrant Towns and Villages initiative, was an impressive addition to the Canungra streetscape and the east-west corridor through the region. Scenic Rim Regional Council received $100,000 from the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund, an initiative under the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure (TDDI) program. “Like The Bower by Richard Howie and Nicole Jeske which forms the centrepiece of the new Gallery Walk Community Park on Tamborine Mountain, Strata Canungra by Russell Anderson and Rebecca Ward, creates a sense of arrival in the Canungra community,” Cr Christensen said. “These regional gateway markers are part of the journey in creating a route which engages travellers with all our towns and villages in a thought-provoking way as they explore the beautiful Scenic Rim.” Corporate and Community Services Chair and Division 3 Councillor Virginia West said the artwork reflected the Canungra community’s strong connection to art, culture and creativity. “Strata Canungra is as topical as it is topographical and was selected by Council on the recommendation of the Scenic Rim Arts Reference Group and community feedback on a short list of designs,” she said. “It is a landmark artwork that will not only add to Canungra’s postcard appeal for visitors but also provide a focal point for the Canungra community.”

Australia Day Awards
Nominations are now open for the 2018 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards so don’t forget to nominate a quiet achiever in your community to acknowledge their valuable contribution. Forms are available on the Council website and nominations close on Friday 10th November.
Masterplans Judged Best In Australia
The town centre plans for Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain as part of the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages, have won a national award for Landscape Excellence in the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects national awards. The designs beat Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne City Councils. On the subject of VATV, Council this week received $870,000 from the State Government towards delivering the Main Street project on Tamborine Mountain. This is an important project given the “eyes of the world” will be on Tamborine Mountain as part of the Commonwealth Games baton on its last stop - the Scenic Rim before reaching the Gold Coast.
Baton Carriers For Commonwealth Games
Congratulations to all those who were nominated to carry the baton through the Scenic Rim. The chosen people are Betty Pugh, John Penglis and Karen Dickson. Congratulations to you all and what an honour it is for you. The Commonwealth Games baton will travel along a designated route of Tamborine Mountain on its final stage before reaching the Gold Coast on Sunday 1st April 2018.
Playground In D J Smith Park
Construction of the new playground is expected to be completed in late November and open in the first week of December. This is part of the Playground Strategy and budgeted in this financial year along with Beaudesert’s Jubilee Park playground and Kooralbyn’s Boomerang Park playground. All are very different and form part of a playground trail throughout the Scenic Rim.
New Bridge Work
Preliminary work has commenced for the construction of the three new bridges in the Beechmont area- Botan Bridge and Back Creek Bridge and Sharp Bridge at Witheren. Construction will be underway in the coming months.
Girls Get Going Program
This wellbeing program funded by a $9500 Queensland Government grant is underway and there are weekly activities being held in Canungra. If you haven’t seen a brochure check Council’s website or let me know and I will send one to you.
Local Government Conference
The Mayor, Crs Enright, O’Carroll and myself attended this annual conference last week, a very busy couple of days but with important learnings and updates on local, state and federal government matters. It is always a good time to network with councillors and mayors from other council areas to share ideas.

In his first commitment since the State election was called, local MP for the Scenic Rim Jon Krause announced an LNP Queensland Government would provide $20,000 assistance to the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch to assist in the RSL’s plans for the memorial. “As a community, we should never forget the sacrifices of those who have served our country in so many conflicts, and the many who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms,” Mr Krause said. “With Remembrance Day approaching on 11th November, lest we forget the many young men from the Canungra area that volunteered in World War I, as well as those who served in all conflicts and peacekeeping operations since.” Mr Krause said the RSL would be making changes to the layout of the memorial, including memorials for more of the conflicts that Australian servicemen and women have served in, and also include a memorial to animals involved in war. “The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch has taken up the baton of remembrance by putting their hand up to complete this project, and I congratulate them on their effort to bring a lasting reference to these additional elements of our history,” Mr Krause said.
Nigel Allsopp, David Day, Keith Cogzell and Col Lee with Jon Krause and Virginia West in D J Smith Park
“This is a great example of the community working together too, because all of these works will be part of the Council’s plans to improve DJ Smith Park.” Canungra RSL Sub-Branch President, Col Lee, said it was an important project for the community. “It’s important to remember those who have served our country,” Mr Lee said. “As a Sub-Branch, we are conscious that we are custodians of that memory and the
part we play in the community supporting our veterans, their families and in commemorating their sacrifice on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.” “I thank Jon for his ongoing support to assist us with this task, and welcome in particular his commitment to providing financial assistance to this project should his party be successful at the election.”

Nature’s Gems
Birding Travel Diary Timber Creek, NT By Melissa Whitby The small township of Timber Creek was my next stop in the pursuit of wildlife on my recent NT/WA trip. We stayed two nights at the Timber Creek Hotel which has an adjoining caravan park. There were several key species such as the Purple-crowned Fairywren, Yellow-rumped Mannikin and Gouldian Finch we were keen to find. The grounds of the caravan park provided some good preliminary wildlife sightings including Crimson Finch, Buffsided Robin, Bar-breasted Honeyeater, Yellow-tinted Honeyeater and the largest Freshwater Crocodile I had ever seen!! Just north of Timber Creek is Policeman’s Point, where we concentrated our search for the bird species mentioned above. Although we had no luck seeing Gouldian Finches, we observed a number of other bird species including Masked Finch, Diamond Dove, Brown Falcon, Varied Sittella and Double-barred Finch. The next area we visited was the Bradshaw Bridge viewing point. This site proved to be a hotspot for Yellow-rumped Mannikin, Purplecrowned Fairy-Wren, Star Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mannikin and Crimson Finch early in the morning which was a very rewarding experience. The Gouldian Finches continued to elude us, however, later in the trip we spoke to another two birdwatchers who told us they had seen a large flock at the Timber Creek airport. We did visit the airport but we were not as lucky as those birdwatchers. Other interesting wildlife sightings around Timber Creek included the Antilopine Wallaroo and Varied Sittellas nesting. From Timber Creek, we continued to head west towards the Kununurra and crossed over into Western Australia. Our next destination was Parry’s Lagoon between Kununurra and Wyndham. This area is one of the best places to see Gouldian Finches and we were not to be disappointed. That part of my bird journey I will have to write about for next month!

Fireflies – a galaxy of lights on a Spring night Australoluciola nigra By Susan Cully There are four species of fireflies in this district. Strictly speaking these are not ‘flies’ at all, they are beetles, Lampyridae, in the order Coleoptera. They can be seen in September when warm evenings are to be found, they are eye-catching for their use of bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates or prey. There are 25 species and four genera of flashing fireflies in Australia. They occur all along the rainforest and mangrove regions of eastern Australia from Cape York to the Illawarra region of NSW. They are plentiful in New Guinea. Their distribution is restricted by temperature and humidity, both for their preservation within a soft exoskeleton and for the required conditions affecting the distribution of their food. The four species that can be seen in this area are: Atyphella atra, Luciola nigra, Atyphella similis and Atyphella scintillans. Both males and females of each species have light organs, they use these to attract a mate. In some species the female stays on the ground emitting only a feeble light and lives for only 24 hours, thus leaving a lot of male fireflies in a fruitless search for females. Females can be found by careful investigation of the ground and leaf litter, looking for their slowly winking little light. In some species there is a complex dialogue within the pattern of male flash pattern and duration and its female response. This serves to maintain species identity when attracting a mate. Larvae and pupae are faintly luminous, they hunt prey by injecting, paralyzing, liquefying and digesting small snails and slugs They have been of interest to humans since ancient times. The first written records of fireflies are from China 2,500 years ago.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Canungra has become well known for its Pink atmosphere during the month of October and what a wonderful contribution the local community makes towards the research of Cancer. I think we should feel proud of the town’s efforts. The Healing Service, held at St Luke’s as part of the Turning Pink month’s activities was well attended and gave a sense of inner peace to those involved and those in need. The year continues to be very busy and the next major activity for the St Luke’s congregation is to assist at St George’s Spring Fair on Tamborine Mountain. This is a great Fair and an important fund raiser for our churches. I encourage you to visit the Fair on Saturday 4th November from 8.00am until 1.00pm. There will be food, clothing, bric a brac, books, plants and much more available for sale. We at St Luke’s will also be preparing for our Christmas themed street stall to be held in the main street on Saturday 16th December from 8.00am. There will be a wide range of food, gifts and plants, perfect for your Christmas shopping. At St Luke’s we continue to work hard to build our congregation and to be a vibrant part of the Canungra community. The main thing you will notice in the near future will be the removal of the front fence. We hope this will open up the area and help people to feel welcome. There are no barriers between the Church and the people who pass by. Feel free to come on in, the church is open every Saturday morning from 9.00am and of course, for Sunday service at 7.45am.

Canungra Social Golf Club is Back!
Most of us know Dan as the local bottle-o man, but behind the smile hides a golfing tragic just waiting to hit the local fairways. Sick of staring at his golf set in the garage, Dan has blown off the cobwebs and decided to get the social golf club back up and running. Kicking off with 18 holes at Parkwood Village (Home of the Golf Coast Titans) on Sunday morning 3rd December, a tee time has been reserved for a maximum 20 players and spaces will be allocated on a first in best dressed basis. Moving forward, Dan has also booked a variety of different golf courses once a month throughout 2018 such as Kooralbyn, Palm Meadows, Gainsborough Greens and the Glades. Dan says the idea is to get a group of locals together monthly from a social perspective, sink a few beverages, talk alot and whack a few little white balls in the process! Dan is also seeking monthly game day sponsors in either cash, product or services from local businesses that the club may use for ongoing prizes If this sounds like your calling or you know someone else who might like to go, please spread the word. For more details see Dan in the Canungra Hotel bottle shop or call 0410 496 077.
Canungra Social Swim Club Canungra Social Swim Club would like to give a huge thank you to Scenic Rim Regional Council – Community Grants for our fantastic new BBQ. We are looking forward to cooking up a storm every Thursday night which is a huge benefit to the club. Swimming Club starts at 5.30pm every Thursday so if any kiddies age 5-17 years old are interested please come on down to our local swimming pool. Sport Get Playing Funding for Local Sports Clubs Get Playing Places and Spaces initiative has delivered $448,272 in funding for local clubs in the latest round of grants. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said that he had lobbied for each of the successful recipients in this round of funding, which will be of great benefit to clubs affected by flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Debbie. Beaudesert Golf Club, Canungra Area Golf Club and Cedar Grove and District Riding Club were successful in obtaining funding in the sixth round of this initiative. Mr Krause said the funding would make a huge difference to the three successful local groups. “Each of these clubs were affected by flooding, along with so many others in our community. It is pleasing to see these organisations receiving grants to fund improved infrastructure projects for our community,” Mr Krause said. “This terrific outcome would not have occurred
without
many
hardworking
volunteers giving their time and energy to complete the grant application process.” In this round, three local clubs will receive $448,272 in Get Playing funding to improve their infrastructure and facilities. The projects receiving funding are:
Jon Krause with members of Canungra Area Golf Club
• Beaudesert Golf Club Inc ($150,000) to replace two bridges and construct rock barriers around a third bridge. • Canungra Area Golf Club (CAGC) Inc ($148,272) to upgrade tees and storage shed. • Cedar Grove and District Riding Club Inc ($150,000) to repair and upgrade facilities including lighting, arena, and fencing. “Sport and recreation clubs are an integral part of this community and are used by
hundreds of residents. Helping these clubs get back on their feet after flooding is important, and I was happy to lend my support to each of these applications.” “Get in the Game is focused on promoting greater participation at the grassroots level and this funding will help achieve that in this electorate,” Mr Krause said. Canungra Owls Soccer Club
CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB RESULTS By Kim Sami
By Rachel Mathers We held our AGM on 18th October and are pleased to let everyone know that the following appointments have been filled: • President: Lana Rankin • Vice President: Rachel Mathers • Treasurer: Shelley Gordon • Secretary: Greg Mathers There are still a couple of positions that remain vacant and we will be in touch with our soccer families in the new year asking for support. The main position that needs to be filled before a new season starts, is that of the Registrar. I have fulfilled this role over the past three seasons and would like pass the baton on to someone else, which will enable me to concentrate on other areas of the club. The role of Registrar plays a vital part at the beginning of each season, so it would suit someone who can’t commit to the club for the whole year. I’m more than happy to guide and support anyone who is willing to take on this role. Other important positions that remain vacant are Senior Contact, Junior Contact and a Property Manager. If you would like to volunteer to help out in these roles, or at the club in general, please get in contact with us. We have already been discussing some new and exciting changes within our club and we look forward to telling you about them over the next few months. Keep the afternoon of Sunday 4th February free – we’ll be hosting an “Open Afternoon” with some outdoor activities and a BBQ for our families. If you have any questions about the vacant positions or about how you can help or sponsor our club in 2018, make sure you get in contact with us via Facebook or email (canungraowls@outlook.com).

Most locals know Shelby Turner as the popular owner and stylist at Instyle Hair Design in Canungra, but what you may not realise is she has just finished the 2017 Australian Superbike Road Racing Championship in an incredible ninth place. Racing in a male dominated field of over 40 riders across four states in Australia, including Darwin in the Northern Territory, Shelby’s consistent results all year earned her the points to be Aussie number nine and 2nd fastest Female in the country. “I never expected to finish in the top ten, pitting against Australia’s best riders” Shelby said. “It makes all the training, the long hours traveling around the country and juggling all my valuable clients worthwhile.” The highlight of Shelby’s year was winning the 300 Supersport Race at Round 7 of the Championship in Victoria. “I couldn’t believe my Kawasaki Ninja 300 was sitting on the top step of the podium. It was a dream come true.” Shelby’s debut year finished on a high when she was accepted to Race in the support class at the Australian Moto GP at Phillip Island last weekend, rubbing
