An Alpaca A Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Mountview Alpacas have been bringing joy to staff and patients at Beaudesert Hospital during visits as part of the Delta Pet Program. The Alpacas were recently featured on the ABC news, with footage taken both at the Beaudesert Hospital and at the farm at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard. The Delta Pet Program is designed to bring animal companionship to those who need it most. Alpaca handler, Jenny Pack says the patients are generally surprised and overwhelmed to see an alpaca walk into their ward! “Some people have never seen an alpaca in person their whole lives, so to be visited by one at their bedside is pretty special,” said Jenny, “At Beaudesert Hospital many of the elderly patients are local country people who have lived on the land with animals and livestock, and to interact with the alpacas brings back memories which sparks a conversation and some positive emotions.” Jenny said it was only through disaster that she and her husband Stephen realised they could train the alpacas. “After Cyclone Debbie in 2017 forced us to relocate our alpaca farm (after a 20 year reliable location), we were fortunate enough to receive an offer from O’Reilly’s Vineyard to relocate the alpacas to the vineyard property,” she said. “The process took over a year to come to fruition and in the meantime we would take the alpacas to the vineyard in small temporary fenced areas. To let them out for a break we started walking them on leads and realised they were quite amenable to the idea.”

A patient at Beaudesert Hospital enjoys a visit from Ed Sheeran and Pancake the alpacas. Photo: Rachel Riga, ABC.

“Now we have eight alpacas trained to walk with visitors on leads at the vineyard and a select few who mingle with staff and patients as ‘Therapy Alpacas’.” Beaudesert Hospital Nursing and Midwifery Director Jacquie Smith said introducing the alpacas was a long but exciting journey that had resulted in Beaudesert Hospital being the only hospital in Australia to have alpacas as part of pet therapy to brighten the lives of patients who visit and stay in the hospital. The alpacas have done other visits and hope

to continue local pet therapy sessions. “In 2017 we took the alpacas to Beaudesert Star Gardens Aged Care for a Christmas visit which we aim to continue,” said Jenny, “Following that we started visiting Beaudesert Hospital once a month, and have had a couple of invitations to other facilities including the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.” “We are now looking forward to expanding this idea and hope to provide even more smiles with the alpacas,” said Jenny.

“We all love you ... and we want you to be safe”

The message at the Young Driver Education night was summed up very succinctly by speaker Ken Hill: “We all love you. Your parents love you, your friends love you and we as a community love our young people,” said Ken, “And we want you to be safe.” Ken spoke these words after speaking about his brother and sister, both killed in car accidents 10 years apart. Both of them were 16 years of age. “No parent, no family, wants to get that phone call,” he said, “The ones left behind are never the same. Your family is never the same.” “I’m always wondering what they would be doing now - would they have a family, would they have children - they never had the chance to do those things.” Norm Graham also spoke of the effect the death of his son, Jared, had on his family. Norm and Ken were two of several speakers on the night which also included local police, ambulance officers, firefighters and driving instructor Grant Haswell. Sgt Craig Roberts answered questions about road rules and penalties for not obeying certain rules.

Norm Graham with his son Jared’s driver’s licence and birth certificate

Red Line Driving School’s Grant Haswell told the crowd that the most important part of learning to drive is doing as many hours of supervised driving as possible. “Statistics show that young drivers who have done more hours with a supervisor are

safer than those who have done fewer hours with a driving instructor,” he said. “I’m not here to tout my business, I’m here to make sure you are as safe as possible once you get on the road on your own.”

Annual Report Gives Council Account of 2017-18

Scenic Rim Regional Council’s 2017-18 Annual Report, an account of Council’s financial and operational performance for the year, was adopted at Council’s meeting on 22nd October 2018. Mayor Greg Christensen said the Annual Report and Financial Statements which were approved by the Queensland Audit Office were prepared in line with the Local Government Act 2009. “I encourage everyone to take a look at the 2017-18 Annual Report which reflects our region’s many outstanding achievements in what was our 10th anniversary year since the council amalgamations of 2008,” he said. “This comprehensive document represents a report card to the community on the progress made in achieving the outcomes of the Community Plan which provides the overarching framework for every aspect of Council’s service delivery to the Scenic Rim. “It reflects our commitment to ensuring the Scenic Rim is the best place in which to live, work and enjoy life to the fullest and that ours is a region of viable and sustainable towns and villages whose enviable lifestyle respects the important relationship between the environment and economic growth.” The 2017-18 Annual Report continues the story of the Scenic Rim’s recovery works on road and bridge infrastructure following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie in April 2017 which left Council with a damage bill of more than $38.5 million. It also documents highlights of the year which included the most successful Eat Local Week ever in June and the Fires on Top of Mountains cultural program, which brought the community together in celebrating the Scenic Rim’s unique lifestyle in the lead-up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April. “While the report looks back on the 2017-18 year it also looks to the many opportunities that are on the horizon for the year ahead,” Cr Christensen said. The report can be viewed online at Council’s website, with copies also available on request at Council’s Customer Contact Centres at Tamborine Mountain, Beaudesert and Boonah.

Container Refund Scheme for Canungra

Canungra and Bromelton will be the first Scenic Rim collection points as the roll-out of the Containers for Change refund scheme begins on Thursday 1st November. While the State Government’s Container Refund Scheme aims to reduce the volume of litter in the environment by providing an incentive for the collection and return of approved containers, Mayor Greg Christensen said Council was yet to be fully advised by the contractors of the operation of the scheme in the Scenic Rim. “The contractors who were appointed by the State Government have advised that they will operate a mobile container collection service only from 9am to noon on Thursdays beginning 1st November at Council’s Central Landfill at Bromelton and on Wednesdays from 7th November from 9am to noon at the Canungra Waste Transfer Station with further detail to come,” he said. “The process of identifying providers for the Containers for Change program has been run by the State Government which has led to the Peace Lutheran Church at Gatton, trading as Anuha, and Re.Turn It being the contractors for our region. “At this stage they have not provided Council with detail to undertake Containers

for Change collection points at Boonah or Tamborine Mountain.” Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150 millilitres and three litres - preferably with the lids removed - are eligible for a 10 cent refund when returned to a nominated container refund point. “It’s important that Scenic Rim residents, who are champions when it comes to recycling, continue to recycle containers such as plain milk bottles and glass wine bottles - that are not eligible under the refund scheme - through existing kerbside collection or drop-off points at our waste transfer stations,” Cr Christensen said.

Council has been advised that residents wishing to participate in the Containers for Change refund scheme will need to register by visiting www.containersforchange. com.au and creating an account so that their refund payments can be processed via an electronic funds transfer into their bank account as there will be no cash at collection points. “Residents who do not wish to participate in the program should continue to recycle their containers as normal, ,” Cr Christensen said. Fashion, Food and Fun!

Every year Turning Canungra Pink events brighten up the everyday lives of Canungra residents and while some find it hard to choose from the myriad of events, there is no shortage of things to do! 2018 was no exception with a fashion parade, luncheon, high tea and alpaca picnic amongst the many things on offer. This year paragliders and hanggliders visiting for the Canungra Cup and Canungra Classic also got involved, decorating buses and gliders and many of the pilots wore the distinctive ‘Turning Canungra Pink’ buffs! Organisers say they are on target to reach or exceed their goal of $20,000.

JOIN US AT THE OUTPOST CAFÉ ON 22 NOV 18

As we mentioned in our article last month, Canungra & District Community Bank® have recently celebrated being open for two years! During this time, we have loved becoming involved with not-for-profit organisations; we know that we have made a difference within the community and we want to remind everyone that we’re here to stay. During the planning stage, opening as a traditional branch was an easy decision – we want to talk to the community face to face and get to know you personally. If you haven’t been in to meet us, now is a great time! We won’t pressure you into anything...in fact, we love a chat - and when the time is right, we’re more than happy to tell you how banking with a Community Bank® makes a difference. If you are part of a local not-for-profit organisation and would like to apply for funding, applications for this round close on 31 December 2018. Drop us a line or call into the branch for a copy of the application. On 22 November (6.00pm for 6.30pm start), The Outpost Café are hosting our AGM…we know that many people see those 3 capital letters and think “No! I’ve got better things to do with my time.”…please don’t think that! Last year the meeting was smooth and short. The meeting is open to all shareholders, customers and interested parties – we’d love to see you there and look forward to chatting with community members over light refreshments afterwards. P.S…check out this awesome cake - we have a friendly AND talented Bank Manager!

Going to the Vineyard? Alpaca Your Lunch!

The second Pink Alpaca Picnic hosted by Mountview Alpacas at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard was full of fun and excitement. Despite inclement weather, which brought the picnic inside, the crowd enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch which for some was accompanied by cocktails by the fabulous mixologist, Chris. After lunch, raffles were drawn and the weather cleared, leaving a perfect

opportunity for alpaca races on an only mildly rain affected track. With several heats before the final race, the favourite was the diminutive Tim Tam, who proved that good things do come in small packages when he beat Ed Sheeran and Pancake easily. Forunately Ed Sheeran managed to finish all his races this year. At last year’s picnic he decided he had had enough in the last race and unceremoniously sat down mid race during the final!

The picnickers adjourned to the creek for the traditional duck race down Canungra Creek, which got off to a slow start when the ducks appeared stopped in some very slow moving water. They finally got going again and there was more fun as about 30 yellow rubber ducks were fished out of the creek at the end. A beautiful location and lots of fun while raising funds for cancer during Turning Canungra Pink.

The Savoyard Singers will celebrate 20 years with a performance of ‘Broadway by the Creek’ at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard on 10th November. The Savoyards Singers began back in 1999 – when a small touring singing group performed for the first time in the Ball Room at Canungra Valley Vineyards. Guests will enjoy opera and musical theatre with performances of classics such as Impossible Dream, This Is The Moment and Luck Be A Lady Tonight, plus many more. The performance stars Mary Ewing, Mark Craig, Kim Kee, Ross Muirhead, John Hills with accompaniment by Jye Burton and will feature a collection of songs from Broadway. Shannon Foley, who recently played Jean Valjean in Savoyards’ production of Les Misérables, will serve as MC and also be a guest artist for the evening. O’Reilly’s will supplement this creek-side spectacular with scrumptious share platters and an O’Reilly’s wine (or two!) while you get swept away with performances by the fantastic performances of some of Australia’s most talented performers! Go to https://oreillys.com.au/events/broadway-bythe-creek/ for tickets and more information, seats are limited. Bus transfers will be available from Brisbane and Canungra.

Organics With Love - New Name, Same Company!

Canungra health food store, In the Raw Organics, has recently changed its name to Organics With Love (OWL) Wholefoods Cafe and Health Food Shop. Owner Linda Stollznow said in order for the business to grow, she took on a new business partner, Donna Purtill. “We saw a need to enhance our store in a positive and progressive way,” said Linda. “We are excited to move forward and make lots of changes over the coming months. Our goal is to offer more ranges and items in the shop and increase the food selections in the cafe.” The OWL cafe currently uses organic coffee and also offers frappes, smoothies and cold press juices - as well as a range of muffins, biscuits and slices. Linda and Donna said they feel the OWL Wholefoods name change represented the community in an affirmative manner. “Canungra is the “Valley of the owls” and Organics With Love is abbreviated to OWL,” said Donna.

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

What’s Next? Well October has been and gone, and a very successful month it was, at least in terms of fundraising for Turning Canungra Pink! After a few very busy months, mainly with community events, I’m keen to put my feet up for a bit. Over the last few months there are a lot of people who have pitched in where needed - whether it is helping on a stall for Turning Canungra Pink, turning up to help set up the day before the Canungra Show, or picking up rubbish at the clean up for the Rodeo every bit you do helps. We are extremely fortunate to live in a community where people are happy to organise events such as the 100 Years on the Grounds as well as Swim Club, Trivia Nights and more! These things are what makes Canungra a community, not just a place to live. The volunteers who help out become friends, they are connected to other community members and the benefits throughout the township are obvious to all. So what’s next? Well, I’ll be out the back, working on the paper, hanging with my cats and dogs and playing guitar very badly (if the neighbours are very unlucky I’ll be singing as well). After that? Who knows! Watch this space...

Free Fun At Pool Parties

Celebrate the coming of summer with free family fun at pool parties across the Scenic Rim next month. With temperatures set to rise, Council is planning free pool parties to keep everyone cool and entertained with neon pool tubes, games, music, and giveaways. Mayor Greg Christensen encouraged Scenic Rim residents to take the plunge and make the most of the free Saturday events during November. “These free pool parties take place at just the right time, with families preparing the budget for Christmas and the weather warming up,” he said. “With free entry, families can enjoy a range of activities and entertainment without having to break the bank.” Make a splash at Canungra Pool on Saturday 10th November from 11am to 2pm. The fun continues at Boonah Pool on Saturday 17th November from 11am to 2pm. Jump on in at Tamborine Mountain Pool on Saturday 24th November from 11am until 2pm. There will also be free fair dinkum fun with an Australia Day pool party at Beaudesert on Saturday 26th January from 10am to 2pm. “Remember to be sun smart when having fun outdoors by staying hydrated, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and applying sunscreen throughout the day,” Cr Christensen said.

Vintage Clothing is New at Canungra Books and Art Canungra Books and Art is now stocking a small range of quality vintage clothing to complement the “vintage to now” theme of the shop. “Each item has been individually handpicked for it’s quality”, said owner Jan McGregor. “We thought it would be a great addition to the eclectic range of items we already stock”, said Jan. The range includes silk tops, skirts and dresses, all with a lovely vintage feel. As this is a limited range we expect items to sell quickly. The vintage dresses will join the beautiful handcrafted locally-made Artisan items of scarves, dresses, pottery, art and one-off items offering a wonderful choice for everyone.

NEW!!

The Remembrance Day service will commence at 10.30am on Sunday, 11th November at D J Smith Memorial Park. Those of you who wish to lay floral tributes are most welcome and are encouraged to do so. For anyone else who would like to lay a Red Poppy, these will be on sale from 3rd -10th November 2018. It is always tricky trying to have the bugle call of “Reveille” played right on the 11th Hour; the official time the Armistice came into effect. Any one missing out laying their poppy prior to this time will be given the opportunity to do so straight after “Rouse” is played.

New Memorial Opens

Following on from the Remembrance Day Service and after a short administration break, the new memorial for the animals who served, their riders, handlers, the veterinary surgeons and their staff will formally be opened. The memorial is located to the rear of the flag poles. Anyone who would like to lay a Purple Poppy is encouraged to do so and you will be given ample time to do so. The end of the Great War was the beginning of the end for many of these animals as modern machinery and communication systems were being developed. Purple Poppies will also be on sale leading up to this the 100th year of the signing of the Armistice. Please join with me on this very special day.

Canungra’s

The Canungra Classic Hang Gliding Competition attracted some of the world’s top ranking pilots, including world number one, Jonny Durand. The Canungra Classic, run from 20th 27th October, was the first Hang Gliding competition of the Australian season and is an 8-day, FAI Category 2, HGFA AAA Sanctioned competition. It is an important competition for those who want to qualify for points towards the Australian ladder and Australian Team Selection. It was also a great opportunity for aspiring competition pilots to fly with some of the world’s best pilots at one of Australia’s challenging and premier hang gliding sites. The focus of the competition this year was to encourage Novice pilots to embrace the

values of competition flying by introducing them to the principles and strategies needed to compete; offering achievable tasks, and to be supported by other, more experienced competition pilots. Pilots finished the competition this year very happy after some great weather and terrific flying conditions, with pilots flying for seven out of the eight competition days. Competition Director, Ken Hill, thanked the sponsors ofthe Canungra Classic for their support - Canungra Services Club, Canungra Hotel, The Outpost Cafe, Canungra Hub, Ginja Ninja Cafe and Bar, Canungra FoodWorks, Moyes Gliders and Durand Water Filters. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank landowners throughout the Scenic Rim for allowing landings of our pilots

during this event,” said Ken, “Without the generosity of our sponsors and the local landowners we would not be able to hold these competitions.” The Canungra Classic winner was Oliver Chitty, from the UK who is now living in Canungra. Second place went to Jonny Durand, a local pilot from Beechmont who is currently Ranked number one in the world. In third place was Attila Bertok from Hungary, who is a former World Champion Hang Glider. Attila won two of the days and consistently finishes on the podium at big competitions. The Canungra Cup Paragliding competition was run from 6th - 13th October and attracted over 100 pilots from around Australia and New Zealand.

100 Years on the Grounds - Centenary Celebration

100 Years on the Grounds was a great community celebration with a number of local organisations, including the Canungra State School fete, included in the day. Canungra Sports and Recreation Association Secretary, Erin Quinlan, said they were very happy with the participation by a range of groups from the surrounding area that made it a successful and enjoyable day. “The Canungra Sports and Recreation Reserve Grounds Inc would like to thank the Canungra community and surrounding communities for joining in their 100 Years on the Grounds celebration on Sunday. With activities and fun for young and all, not even the hot weather could keep everyone away!” said Erin. “Thanks must go to the sponsors: Aquis, Canungra Caltex, Finch Earthmoving, The Canungra Times, Canungra Hotel, O’Reillys Canungra Valley Vineyards, Canungra Op Shop and a special thank you to the Canungra Golf Club for ferrying our elders around the Grounds,” she said. Connie Sutherland from the 100 Year Organising Committee thanked the volunteers who helped in the lead up to the event and on the day. “Without them the event would not have been possible,” said Connie. Thank you to the demonstrators and performers who donated their time and effort towards the day’s Centenary Celebration and to support a worthy cause,” she said. With a variety of entertainment and stalls on show, the day had something for all ages, from camp cooking to pig racing and the Canungra State School fete traditional dunking machine. Entry was by gold coin donation to Turning Canungra Pink (raising funds for cancer research and patients).

Australia’s Frogs Are Calling For Help

Australia’s frogs are calling for help and you can play a key role in saving them by taking part in Australia’s biggest frog count - FrogID Week, Friday 9th November to Sunday 18th November 2018. FrogID Week is the next phase of the Australian Museum (AM)’s FrogID citizen science program, aimed at collecting frog calls across the nation - at a moment in time - to establish a benchmark from which frog populations can be monitored annually. You can help save Australia’s frogs by recording the sounds of frogs during FrogID Week. Simply download the free FrogID app on your phone and, during FrogID Week, head outside to listen for frogs. When you hear a frog, record the sound with the FrogID app and submit it to the FrogID program. It’s easy and it’s free. Dr Jodi Rowley, Australian Museum Curator of Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Biology, said public help during FrogID Week was vital to collect all the information

scientists need to track the health of Australian frog populations. The AM and the FrogID team are calling on all Australians to participate in FrogID Week. They have priority species they need help to find, including missing, threatened and other priority frogs. Priority missing or threatened frog species known to have inhabited South Eastern Queensland: • Green-thighed Frog (Litoria brevipalmata) - Vulnerable in NSW. Coastal south eastern Queensland, north eastern NSW. Other priority frog species • Red Tree Frog (Litoria rubella). Widely distributed in Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland and NSW • Desert Froglet (Crinia deserticola). Queensland, Northern Territory, extreme north eastern Western Australia, extreme north NSW • Copland’s Frog (Litoria coplandi). Northern part of Northern Territory and Western Australia, extreme north eastern Queensland In the past year, FrogID participants have helped record more than 30,000 frog calls and identified 166 frog species, including

frogs which the AM did not previously have audio recordings of: “FrogID Week is the next really important part of our program - the high number of recordings we hope to gather at the same time each year during FrogID Week will allow us to compare year-on-year how our frogs are coping so we can make informed conservation decisions,” said Dr Rowley. “Frogs are good indicators of the health of the environment, as they are highly sensitive to changes on land and in the water, so understanding how healthy our frogs are also helps us track threats to biodiversity and the broader impact of change on the land, other native animals and even for our own communities.” SEQW19534A

Shout Out To Community’s Quiet Achievers

The 2019 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards are now open across four categories, highlighting the significant contributions of community groups and citizens of all ages across the region. Mayor Greg Christensen said the awards program is an important opportunity to recognise the many selfless and hardworking community members who make a positive difference in the lives of others throughout the Scenic Rim. “Our new-look Australia Day Awards celebrate our community champions and the quiet achievers who make the Scenic Rim such a great place to live,” he said. Cr Christensen said analysis and feedback from the community had helped to refine this year’s nomination process and the selection criteria for the awards. The 2019 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards will be presented across four categories: • Community Event of the Year Award for the individual, group or organisation which has staged the most outstanding community event in the Scenic Rim region between 30th November 2017 and 30th November 2018.

NAPLAN Success

In October Canungra received the 2018 NAPLAN results for students in year 3 and 5 and Principal Kylie Todhunter said whilst NAPLAN is not how she measures student success or the sole focus of our teaching and learning, it is a tool the school can use to gauge how well the school, the curriculum and the students are progressing. “The 2018 results are an indication that the hard work of our staff, students and the community is working and our students are experiencing academic success,” said Kylie.

• 100% of students who sat NAPLAN in 2018 were above National Minimum standard for numeracy. • 61% of year 3 students are in the upper two bands for reading. • 55% of year 3 students are in the upper two bands for writing. • Year 5 writing has the highest ever percentage in the upper two bands for Canungra SS. • Canungra SS consistently outperformed the nation and the state in improvement between year 3 and year 5.

Mia McDonald have been chosen as one of five finalists in this year’s Australia wide Screen It Competition. The competition, in its 15th year, is run by ACMI (Australian College of Moving Images) located in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

It is Australia’s biggest annual student moving image competition showcasing the talents and skills of students in all ages across Australia, whilst enhancing screen and digital literacy skills and important cross curriculum capabilities. This year’s topic was ‘Curious’ and the girls were the only QLD finalists in the Mia and Ocean-Lily middle (years 5-8) Videogame Category. The girls designed a videogame called “Galacticat and da Obscure Pineapple” using the software Scratch. They designed all their own backgrounds, programming, storyline and voiceovers. Ocean Lily and Mia are both very excited about the next stage of the competition which sees them fly to Melbourne in late November where they will meet the judges and the winners will be announced. Canungra’s History - Flying Fox By Les Gittins (circa 1970’s), courtesy Pamela Moriarty Prior to 1925, all this land was owned by Lahey’s Limited who were engaged in timber milling. Vast amounts of pine and other marketable timber were taken out. When the supplies of suitable timber started to run out, Laheys auctioned the land in blocks for settlement. In 1925, the area known as Beechmont Estate was released for sale. Part of that estate was situated on Flying Fox Creek. My brother, Roy Gittins, and I, purchased three blocks becoming the first settlers on that part of the estate. Flying Fox and Little Flying Fox at that time presented a vastly different picture from the one we see today. The area was underdeveloped, dense rain forest virtually untouched since the dawn of time, with the only signs of human visitation being the remains of the Tramway and the timber snigging roads cut through the scrub. It is no exaggeration to say that the branches of the huge trees interlocked over these tracks formed a dense canopy overhead. We commenced the task of clearing this scrub with the axe and brush hook, learning to process as we went. After the initial burn, a crop of maize was planted and after the corn was harvested Rhodes grass was sown. It was a constant battle to keep out the pademelons and let the grass become established. By this time other blocks of the estate were being taken up. Our neighbours were Mr and Mrs Tom Mahony and very good friends and neighbours they were. In less than two years the whole area was occupied. Amongst the early settlers who battled against nature were Dave Patterson, Bob Bishop, Tom Bishop, Frank Claffey, Bill Murray, Jack and Harrold Corcoran, Roy and Les Gittins, Mrs R P Gittins (formerly Sylvia Bagnall), and Mrs V L Day (formerly Lorna Day). In 1927 the Coomera Valley Estate was put on the market and land was taken up in a similar manner to Flying Fox area. The Great Depression of the thirties caused difficulty to the settlers in the Coomera Valley area, and cases of farmers walking off their land were by no means uncommon. Some of those who stayed and won through were Jake Lehmann, Traugert Flesser, Jess Mahony, Jim Pedersen, Alan Hinchcliffe, and Jack Jope. The centre of our small community in those days was the Flying Fox school, the Tennis Court opposite the school, and the Post Office. The Post Office was situated in the residence of Tim Bagnall, (later the Page 30

Leslie Gittins carrying separated milk from the dairy to feed the pigs at Flying Fox (1933)

home of Mr and Mrs V C Day). Dances were held in the school, music being provided by an aged seaman, Enoch Larsen and his accordion. The nearest township was Canungra with a gravel road providing the connecting link. After heavy rain the crossings over the creeks and the Coomera River were washed out and the boulders and large stones left behind required a deal of work before the roads were trafficable again. All transport was horse drawn. Hector Clark, the carrier, used a wagon and three horses. At this time, timber was still being taken out of the Upper Coomera by a steam locomotive which operated on the ‘Loco Line’. In flood time cream from the dairy farms was transported along the Loco Line on a Trolley which was propelled by manpower. In 1928 the residents combined together and gave of their time and substance to build a weir over the Coomera River known as Jeromes Crossing. All the labour was carried out on a voluntary basis. The completion of this bridge rendered the area more accessible to motor transport and Hector Clark purchased a Cream Truck which also served as a bus with seating capacity of 25 when required. From then on the district continued to grow. A Public Hall was built, the school was enlarged, and a Teacher’s residence was added. These buildings are all gone now, but they were situated about a kilometre along the Coomera Valley Road from the Flying Fox turnoff. The Second World War checked the progress of this area. A large number of the district’s male population enlisted for active

The Canungra Times - November 2018

service. The war highlighted the inadequacies of the telephone system which consisted of a party line to a few homes. After the war the residents applied for a local exchange. The application was successful and the Ferny Glen Exchange was established. Mrs Tom Mahony was the person appointed to operate the exchange, a position she filled with distinction until the exchange was closed. Electricity was connected in 1960 bringing the area up to date with modern amenities. This short story would not be complete without the mention of the devastation caused by a terrific downpour in 1953. Following a period of rain, a storm at the head of the valleys deposited 16 inches of rain in less than three hours, causing an immense volume of water to rush down the valleys. All buildings in low lying areas, as well as fences, cattle, horses and pigs were completely swept away leaving behind only stones and rubbish. Some scars can still be seen to remind me of that storm. Over the last 20 years we have seen a decline in the number of dairy farms in the area, and there has been a corresponding movement of population away from the area. The centre of Ferny Glen has disappeared and all the school children are transported by bus to Canungra State School and the Beaudesert State High School. Naturally enough I have accumulated many memories and experiences of the past fifty years in this area, but the thing that stays with me most is the wonderful community spirit that was so much a part of our lives in those early days.

Evaluation Of Eat Local Week This signature event, now much longer than a week, pays great financial dividends to our region as we showcase and celebrate our produce, farmers, food manufacturers and processors. The evaluation has shown over $2 million was fed back into the local and Queensland economy during the event, a 19 per cent increase on last year. Some final figures include: • Total attendance of 37,280 ( increase of 16 per cent) • Record attendance at Winter Harvest Festival of 14,000 ( increase of 17 per cent) • 16,874 visitors from interstate and intrastate (increase of 23 per cent) • 15,875 visitors came primarily to attend Eat Local Week (increase of 34 per cent), and • 11,080 visitors stayed overnight in Scenic Rim and spent $1.4 million.

Remembrance Day In Canungra This year a special service will follow the traditional Remembrance Day service in D J Smith Memorial Park to commemorate animals who have served this country in times of war. A new monument will be unveiled, wreaths placed and a short service will highlight the valuable service these animals and their carers played in Australian war history.

Draft Planning Scheme Consultation Don’t forget to check the Talk to a Planner session times and venues around the region if you have any concerns about your property. A Talk with a Planner session is being held in Canungra at the School of Arts Hall on Wednesday November 7th from 4pm till 6pm followed by an Information Session from 6pm till 7.30pm. A copy of the draft plan is on the Council website and hard copies in all Libraries and Customer Contact Centres. The submission period is open until 14th December 2018.

Parking In Canungra Town As we all know, parking is often a challenge in Christie Street these days as the town becomes busier, especially at the weekends. You may not be aware that Council owns the carpark at the Canungra School of Arts Hall and shop owners and staff are encouraged to park there during the day allowing more car parks in the main street for those spending their money in town and supporting local business.

Nature’s Gems

Striped Possum (Dactylopsila trivirgata) By Melissa Whitby Recently, I travelled to North Queensland and I was to encounter a creature that I had wanted to see for many years. The creature is question is known as a Striped Possum. This beautiful possum is easily recognised by its distinctive black and white markings. As the name of the animal suggests, two white stripes run the length of its body except for the tail, which is completely black with a solid white tip. In Australia, Striped Possums have a distribution that is confined to North Queensland between Paluma and Cooktown and also north to areas such as Iron Range on the Cape York Peninsula. This possum can also be seen in Papua New Guinea. I was lucky enough to observe Striped Possums in lowland rainforest. However, they can be observed living in mangroves and eucalypt and melaleuca woodlands bordering rainforest areas. The Striped Possums that I observed were active from 8pm at night and were obviously nocturnal. They stayed in the canopy leaping from one tree to the next and did come down low on suitable tree trunks but never to the ground. Striped Possums will eat a variety of food including insects, fruit and honey. I heard the animals making a grinding noise with their teeth on tree bark and this was to expose grubs, which could then be extracted with their elongated finger to be eaten. I was also to observe several animals feeding in close proximity in one localised area. Striped Possums are a possum species that can be observed throughout their range if one is willing to do the research of known areas where the animals have been observed. I have read several reports of the animals being seen regularly around Cairns and further north in the Daintree. Striped Possums are not listed as a threatened species in Queensland. For anyone wishing to see this beautiful possum, I would suggest doing your research for areas where they are seen around Cairns. Some rainforest accommodation around Cairns and the Daintree have resident animals that can be observed and this is mentioned on their website. For anyone wishing to see a Striped Possum, I wish you the best of luck and hope you enjoy observing them as much as I did!

The Bands of the Bandy Bandy Snake Vermicelli annulata

By Susan Cully This Bandy Bandy snake, often seen in the middle of the road on rainy nights, is feeling harassed. When feeling threatened this snake will contort its body into a series of hoops that are aligned at right angles to the next hoop or loop. The Bandy Bandy has a fine Latin name. The genus is Vermicella, meaning ‘little worm’, referring to the blunt head and the blunt tail, the shape of a standard worm. The species name is annulata, meaning ‘ringed’, referring to the black and white markings around the body. These stunning black and white bands are employed in an escape strategy. The same strategy is used by Zebra herds. The stripes writhe back and forth in a confusing optical trick called ‘flicker fusion’. The movement of the black and white patterns gives the illusion of the snake going one way while in fact it is escaping in the other direction. This escape trick is amplified by the fact that it is difficult to tell the head from the tail of the Bandy Bandy, therefore the predator takes a moment to work out which way the snake is headed.’(NTP&WS junior ranger nature notes) These snakes are common in rainforests and eucalypt forests in the Scenic Rim. They forage by night, resting by day in underground soil cavities, disused burrows, thick compost and other dark, humid, insulated sites. A termite mound provides an ideal shelter. Their diet consists almost exclusively of blind snakes, another group of burrowers, often found feeding on termites in termite mounds. The Bandy Bandy can survive without food and water for extended periods of time. Also commonly known as the Hoop Snake, the Bandy Bandy is a species of venomous snake in the family Elapidae. They need to be approached with respect. There is one report of a serious reaction to a bite.

Mosquitos on the Radar

The recent rain that has been great weather for ducks has also created the perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the warm, wet weather that has been welcomed in the region has also brought unwelcome visitors - potentially disease-carrying mosquitoes - and urged residents to be vigilant to stop their spread. “Mosquitoes are not only annoying, they have the potential to spread debilitating diseases such as Ross River Fever and Barmah Forest Virus as well as heartworm in unprotected dogs,” he said. “It’s therefore vitally important that residents ensure their properties do not become mosquito breeding grounds by clearing away items such as old tyres and barrels where water may pool and mosquitoes can lay their eggs. “Temporary pools of water, such as pot plant saucers and plants such as bromeliads make ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes as it only takes seven days from when the eggs are laid for the adult mosquitoes to emerge.” Residents in semi-rural and rural properties should check lowlying areas where water can accumulate, creating stagnant ponds. Property owners should ensure all rainwater tanks and on-site sewerage facilities are appropriately screened and sealed and check their yards for containers such as buckets, tubs and wheel barrows as well as old tyres that may hold water. “The easiest way to prevent mosquito breeding is to tip the water out as the mosquito larvae (wrigglers) will not survive out of water,” Cr Christensen said. “If you do have mosquitoes on your property, do what you can to avoid being bitten by wearing appropriate clothing and using insect repellent and protect your pets by regularly treating for heartworm.”

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Can you believe it is nearly Christmas? How often have you heard that said and suddenly panic is on to do everything before Christmas? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could approach this time of the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ without feeling stressed? Can I encourage you to celebrate Christmas this year with a spirit of joy and thankfulness? I personally used to be very concerned to see shopping centres selling Christmas gifts, trees, decorations and food so early before 25th December. However, I have changed my thinking to a more positive attitude. I hope the early arrival of Christmas in our shops will help us to feel a sense of peace, happiness and give everyone something special to look forward to. St Luke’s will add to your happiness if you come and join in the Christmas Carols to be held in the church grounds on Wednesday 19th December, commencing at 6.30pm. There will be free glow sticks for the children and the singing will be led by two very talented young singers. Our new sound system will be perfect to help everyone enjoy the Carols. Fundraising is always a necessity to maintain St Luke’s, and our congregation has recently joined in the “Turning Canungra Pink” theme, catered for a dinner for a visiting Caravan club and joined with Wonglepong CWA to serve Devonshire tea along with a stall at the 100 years celebration of the showgrounds. People with a need attended a special Healing Service on Sunday 21st October. Despite a severe storm, those who braved the weather listened to Rev Valerie’s words of encouragement and healing. If you missed this service, you can still ask for special prayers and we would be happy to ask God to be with you. Please watch our notice board for the Christmas Service times to be held at St Luke’s. There is much to be thankful for, why not make the real reason for Christmas your main focus this year?
