Canungra Turns Pink Comes to a Close
Valley View Equine Group riders line up at the Pink Sporting Day on Saturday 10th October
Canungra’s month of cancer fundraising and activities culminated in the Hoe Down at the Showground on Friday 30th October. Organised by Cafe Metz, the Hoe Down raised an estimated $13,000 for the Cancer Council. A cancer survivor herself, Cafe Metz owner, Di Crooks said she was overwhelmed by the support for the event this year, with 120 people attending the Hoe Down and several generous donations by people in the weeks preceeding. One donation of $3,000 brought Di to tears. “I’d like to thank everyone who gave donations and raffle prizes, and helped to make the night a success,” said Di.
“So many people helped to set up, and the night wouldn’t have been a success without everyone who bought tickets and came along,” she said. This is the second year of the Canungra Turns Pink campaign which is run by Canungra Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Breeze FM and local businesses and community organisations. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President Desley Bird thanked everyone who helped to decorate the town and organise events for Canungra Turns Pink, including: Beechmont Tennis Club; Cafe Metz’s Hoe Down at the Showground, Pop Up for Pink in the Park; Canungra Valley Markets; The

Shoe Vault’s Pink Shoe Party; Tamlyn Geiger who organised Canungra Street Stalls and the stallholders; Canungra Bowls Club; Valley View Equine Group; Breeze FM’s Pink Motorcycle Ride; Trish Wilson’s High Tea and the Canungra Swimming Pool’s Pool Party. “It was a great effort and we are greatful for the amazing support from locals and visitors,” said Desley. The Chamber also ran a competition for the best decorated shopfront which was won by Aussie Lifestyle Properties and Canungra Library. Candice is FoodWorks Young Employee of the Year
Candice Wright from FoodWorks Canungra was awarded The Penny Chambers – Young Employee of the Year at the annual FoodWorks Store Awards during the FoodWorks National Conference in Hamilton Island, Whitsundays in October. Store owner Tony Nguyen said, “The Penny Chambers Award is a strong testament to all the hard work Candice has put in to make FoodWorks Canungra the best it can be for our customers.” “Candice is a well-known and much loved team member at FoodWorks Canungra.” “She is delightful in nature whilst interacting with our customers; she is very social and proactive in the community. Almost everyone in the local community knows her from the various community activities she is involved in.” According to Rachael Hobbs, FoodWorks Marketing Manager, “The award recognises Candice’s passion for the FoodWorks brand and her commitment to caring about the community, caring
for customers, and caring about the job she does.” Candice hopes to one day own her own FoodWorks Supermarket, and shows great determination in her pursuit. Since 2011 Candice has obtained a CERT IV in Retail Management, Forklift Driver’s License, Food Safety Supervisory Certificate, and her First Aid Officer Certificate. This award is named in honour of Penny Chambers, a vibrant, vivacious 21 year old girl whose life was tragically cut short during the bushfires that ravaged Kinglake in Victoria on Black Saturday, 7th February 2009. Following the Victorian bushfires, FoodWorks retailers, Support Office staff and employees rallied together to raise funds for the victims, with a contribution of these funds being set aside to recognise a young FoodWorks team member who embodies the attributes that Penny is fondly remembered for: a vibrant community spirit, passionate about her work and customers, and her zest for life.

The award winning Hope Island swimming pool. Inset: Jamie Bramich accepts his award.
State Award for Best Swimming Pool
Wonglepong based pool builder Jamie Bramich of J B Pool Construction was awarded the Master Builders State Housing and Constructions Awards Best Swimming Pool for his Hope Island pool at an awards ceremony on 9th October. The 18 metre pool took out the Regional Award in July this year and Jamie’s company also won the Regional Award in 2014. The pool took 12 months to build as Jamie worked in conjunction with the builders of the home to construct the water area around and inside the structure. With a water feature off the main dining room and a dramatic under
water window entry from the basement, Jamie said it was a special project. “Projects like that don’t come along all the time,” he said. “I won this same award category for another pool and it was nowhere near this standard.” The pool wraps around the house, basement wall, pavilion and entertaining area and has water features on the eastern and southern side.
The Movember Foundation is encouraging men across Queensland to grow their mo’ for thirty days to raise awareness for men’s health. Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle said support for the charity event continued to grow year on year, showcasing the importance for men’s mental health, prostate and testicular cancer to become more prevalent in everyday conversation. “Prostate cancer is now the second most common cancer in men worldwide,” Mr McArdle said. “Educating men about the symptoms of prostate cancer should be a priority. “We also must ensure that information is readily available about getting tested and what treatments are available.” Mr McArdle said money raised through Movember would go towards prostate cancer research, diagnosis and treatment trials, public awareness campaigns and education for men on when and how to take action. “Cancer is such a terrible blight on our community for men and women,” he said. “Every day in Australia, 7 women die from breast cancer and 9 men die from prostate cancer. “It’s so important that we educate all Queenslanders about the importance of being healthy and getting regular check-ups.” Mr McArdle said this year the foundation was launching MOVE for Movember enabling those unable to grow a moustache to take part. “This initiative asks people to commit to 30 minutes of activity every day in November,” he said. “Moving on a regular basis can halve the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.” More information on Movember can be found at: https://au.movember.com.

As a talented make-up artist, Kimberley Farr always dreamed of a life in the entertainment industry and her goal was to work in the film industry. After posting her resume on the entertainment industry web site starnow.com.au, she is looking to make her mark in front of the camera. “I was offered a role as an extra in the film San Andreas based on my profile photo,” said Kimberley. “I enjoyed the experience so much and had a lot of positive feedback. It opened me up to new career posibilities and my goal now is to work in modelling and films, specifically in action films,” she said. Kimberley is training in martial arts and has signed with Vox Talent Management on the Gold Coast. She has entered the Australian Supermodel of the Year competition and has been selected as a Queensland finalist, and is a finalist in Miss Diamond Australia 2016. Kimberley has recnetly appreared in television documentary ‘The True Story of Susan O’Brien - Lost Runner Survival’ as a marathon runner and in a television commercial for Sunshine Beach Surf Club. An ankle injury early in the year could have proven to be a major set back, but Kimberley said thanks to acupuncturist and personal trainer,

Steve Crook she was able to return to training quickly and safely. “Steve was a great help in my recovery,” said Kimberley. “He is now my personal trainer not only for the injury but also for future roles and modelling opportunities.” Her determination to succeed in whatever she does has seen her compete in equestrian events at State and National levels and it is this determination Kimberley applies throughout her life.

Firearms Arrest in Canungra
Investigators from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad’s Firearms Investigation Team in conjunction with Taskforce Maxima and the Australian Border Force executed search warrants at residences in Pacific Pines and Canungra on 28th October in relation to drugs and firearms offences. Police seized 772 steroid tablets, 14 vials of steroids, stolen power tools, a Ruger Model .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle, a Springfield M14 semi-automatic rifle and silencer, a pump action shot gun, a revolver and a Glock fully automatic handgun. A 30-year-old Pacific Pines man was charged with possession of steroids, possession of ammunition and unlawful possession of firearms. A 55-year-old Canungra man was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of firearms and one count of possession of ammunition. Both men are expected to appear before the Southport Magistrates Court in November. “This is another example of the successes of the Gold Coast Firearm Investigation Team in removing dangerous and illegal weapons to enhance the safety of the Gold Coast and those that live, visit and do business here,” Detective Inspector Scott Knowles of the Major and Organised Crime Squad stated.
Cr Virginia West and Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause open the resurfaced court.
Beechmont Tennis Court Resurfaced
A new surface on one of the Courts at the Beechmont Tennic Courts and the provision of a ball machine will make tennis more enjoyable in the Beechmont community. Beechmont Tennis Club President, Peter Clarke, said tennis is not just a game, but it is a great place to socialise within the community. “The courts were originally built in 1985. All the volunteers over the years have contributed their time and effort in buildng and maintaining this wonderful facility. We pay thanks to all of those people, some of whom are no longer with us,” said Peter. The opening of the court coincided with fundraising for Canungra Turns Pink with Pink netball and tennis games throughout the afternoon. The resurfacing of the court was paid for with a grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The ball machine was provided by a grant from the Scenic Rim Regional Council.

Remembrance Day Service
Open Garden - Remembrance Weekend
The McDonald family, in conjunction with the Poziéres Remembrance Association, will be hosting a special Open Garden weekend on 7th and 8th of November at “Avoca Park”, 79-81 Bateke Road, Mount Tamborine. The garden will be open on both days from 9.30am to 4.30pm. An entrance fee of $7 will apply. There will be plants for sale and a craft stall for all those creative people, fabric for quilters, lace, beads, ribbons, paper and more. Morning and afternoon teas will be available at a reasonable cost from a Christian youth support organisation, JC Epidemic. Funds raised from the garden opening will go towards assisting the village of Poziéres to make the Memorial Park a reality. For 99 years Poziéres, a small village in France with a population of only 250, have commemorated the soldiers who were killed in action in and around Poziéres in 1916. For the Centenary in 2016 they intend to build an Australian Memorial Park on the site where our soldiers fell most thickly, both to honour their memory and to protect the site into the future. The Australian Memorial Park will feature a Memorial Wall with the names of the 7000 men who died there inscribed on it. It will be built on the land that Charles Bean described as - “a site more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth”. The President of the Poziéres Remembrance Association, Mr Barry Gracey will be at the garden displaying his unique collection of WW1 memorabilia, all recovered from the fields of Poziéres. The McDonald family have a special reason for their involvement with fundraising for the Association, as their grand uncle, Victor Roland was killed in action near Mouquet Farm, Poziéres on 6th August 1916.
The eleventh hour of the eleventh month marks the precise time when the guns fell silent on the Western Front, bringing an end to World War 1. It is a time, for the past 97 years, when Australians have paused and respectfully observed a minute’s silence in remembrance of those who gave their lives in the service of our country. In World War 1, 60,000 young men from our cities and towns made the supreme sacrifice, 45,000 of them on the Western Front alone. Australia’s Roll of Honour now totals 102,815 servicemen and women from all wars and conflicts. On Wednesday 11th November, Canungra will pause at a special service in D J Smith Memorial Park commencing at 10.45am to remember them. Residents and visitors are invited to attend. This year, 18 students from Canungra State School will be wearing special nameplates bearing the names and service ribbons of the 18 listed on our World War 1 memorial as killed in action or died of wounds or illness while on active service. Although Remembrance Day is not a public holiday, many workers still stop and pause for one minute’s silence at 11am. Others will follow the tradition of wearing a small red poppy, the symbol of Remembrance Day, and the inspiration for the poem In Flanders Fields which will be recited at the service by students of Canungra State School. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch, comprising veterans and ex service personnel, will conduct the service with the assistance of Army Chaplain Fred Davis, piper Bren Dalby and bugler Tim Hunt. Those wishing to lay wreaths should contact the RSL President on 0418 887 762.

The Canungra Times November 2015
Remembering P J Gorman By David Baker
The name “P J Gorman” is inscribed on the Canungra War Memorial in DJ Smith Park, listed with many other names of young men who enlisted from the Canungra district to serve in World War 1. Patrick John Gorman worked at Lahey’s sawmill, Canungra, before enlisting on 5th January 1915, his two brothers, Thomas and William also enlisted and their names are also found inscribed on the memorial. Patrick arrived at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915 with the 9th Battalion which played a key role in establishing and defending the front line of the ANZAC beachhead since the landings of 25th April. Three months later Patrick became ill and was transferred out to hospitals in Malta, then Cardiff before eventually rejoining his comrades of the 9th on 6th March 1916 in Egypt, subsequently joining the action at the Western Front. The Spring Offensive, was the German Army’s last desperate attempt to win the war on the Western Front and Operation Michael, the first major
enemy attack, was unleashed on 21st March 1918. Five days later Patrick Gorman was among the dead. The full details of Patrick’s service record, summarised briefly above, and the circumstances of his demise were uncovered in meticulous research by Lisa Stubbs who has worked tirelessly on the Canungra Answered the Call Centenary of Anzac Project commissioned by the Canungra RSL Sub Branch. It is hoped that the inscription on the Canungra war memorial can be amended now, in light of this research to include “KIA” (Killed in Action) and so honour his sacrifice. A professionally produced website featuring a roll of honour of those men from the district who answered the call to serve in WW1 will launch later this year detailing their service records and include available photos and recollections from surviving family members. It will serve as a perpetual memorial to those who served and to those who paid the ultimate price. In September I was privileged to visit the Oxford Rd Cemetery, four kilometres
north east of Ypres, Belgium where Patrick is buried along with 850 other Commonwealth soldiers and to place a poppy and a cross of remembrance at his gravesite on behalf of the people of Canungra and his family. At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the guns fell silent on the Western Front. Four years of warfare that left between nine and 13 million dead was over. We Will Remember Them.

Canungra residents will have the chance to be an integral part of the new Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch when a public share offer begins. The Committee has formed a Public Company, and has appointed a Company Solicitor and Accountant. The public share offer will follow the launch of the legal Prospectus, which the committee has been working on with the Company Solicitor and Accountant. The local volunteer board are hopeful that the prospectus will be available at the end of November however the legal process still has a way to go. Canungra & District Community Bank® Campaign Chairperson, Janine Rockliff said the share offer is a turning point for the community, the chance to be involved in the creation of something that will help launch Canungra into the future with a self-sufficient community owned enterprise. “We are looking forward to releasing the share offer to the community, seeking more than 200 local shareholders each sharing ownership in this community-minded venture,” said Janine. “If our pledge campaign is anything to go by, we expect demand for our $1 shares to be strong.” “The fact that a significant share of our branch’s profits will go towards community strengthening projects and initiatives is a wonderful by-product of this venture.” “Together we will be building something that will have enormous benefits for the whole of our wider community, and which will continue to grow in its charitable capabilities as it grows in business,” she said. Once the share capital is raised, work will commence on the Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch so it can open to the public. To register for the share offer, or for any enquiries, contact Janine on 0434 238 008 or visit the Canungra Bendigo Agency at 1/1 Lawton Lane, Canungra.

Tamborine Village Lions Club President, David Walker said last year was a great success with many locals enjoying a top night out and the kids loved Santa. “We also have some super prizes in our major raffle and we hope to see as many people as possible at this event,” he said.

Merino and Alpaca - A Perfect Blend
What happens when you mix an Alpaca with a Merino sheep? You not only get harmony in the paddock with the alpacas looking after the sheep, you can also get some luxurious products! The bonding relationship between Alpaca and Merino is reflected in Humphrey Law’s Australian made alpaca/merino blend socks. Alpaca fibre is soft, supple and smooth. It is an excellent insulator as the fibre is hollow, and it is breathable. Its naturally water resistant so it remains warm even when wet and due to its strength (three times that of wool) it can be machine washed and tumble dried. Its is able to absorb foot odours and is hypoallergenic because it contains no lanolin. All of the socks we offer at Mountview Alpaca Farm are Health Socks meaning they have no tight elastic in the cuff making them suitable for people with diabetes. Why not spoil your feet this Christmas or give someone a luxurious yet simple gift they will really appreciate and remember! We have all sorts of alpaca products in our gift shop and you can also shop online. There is free shipping on our online shop for locals until the end of December. Use the codeword “shoplocal” when checking out! There is also heaps of fun for the kids at the farm over the Christmas holidays! Visit mountviewfarm.com.au

Think Local and Shop Local This TAKE A LOOK AROUND TOWN BEFORE YOU SHOP ONLINE
When you start your Christmas shopping, take the time to look around your local shops before heading out of town.
Benefits for the Community
As well as finding gifts you might not have seen elsewhere, shopping locally has many benefits for your community. Shopping locally strengthens the community’s economy and ensures the conveniences will remain into the future. Local businesses often show a greater interest in supporting local causes and charities which contributes to a stronger sense of community and a great way of life.
Fresh Produce
Another benefit of shopping locally is that locally bought produce can be fresher and tastier than mass produced products or those transported around the country. Canungra FoodWorks and The Butchery have all the fresh produce you might need for your Christmas Day dinner. They might even give you a few tips on what is in season or something different to try!
Stress Less!
Christmas can be one of the most stressful shopping times of the year. The crowds and parking are always worse the closer you get to Christmas Day, whether you are shopping for gifts or food. Michelle from My Country Escape is happy to offer advice about suitable gifts, especially for men who might be having trouble deciding on the perfect gift for that special lady in their lives! She is also offering a gift wrapping service for a gold coin donation. Michelle is also opening late on Thursday 19th and 26th November for late night shopping and bubbles! Come in for a glass of bubbly, Christmas Cake and find a great array of gifts you may not see elsewhere. Several other shops in town will also be open late these nights, including KD’s Antiques and The Shoe Vault. And if you just can’t decide what to get, ask about gift vouchers for special services provided by beauty salons and hairdressers in town. By shopping locally you will get to know your neighbours, the people who work at the local shops and the other customers shopping there.

Children Encouraged To Post Their Santa Mail Early
Australia Post is encouraging children across South Queensland to post their Santa Mail early to ensure the jolly man in the big red suit has time to reply before he packs up his sleigh and comes to town! More than 100,000 letters from young Australians including children from South Queensland were sent to the North Pole last year. With just over a month to go until Christmas, Australia Post is again preparing to deliver thousands of letters to Santa expected from Aussie kids this year. To ensure Santa reads and responds to your letter, simply put your wish lists in the post addressed to Santa, North Pole, 9999. Be sure to clearly write your full name and address, along with a stamped envelope so Santa knows where to send his reply. Letters mailed before Christmas will receive a response direct from the North Pole. Christine Corbett, Executive General Manager, Postal Services at Australia Post, encouraged children to send their letters early to ensure they receive a response from Santa before Christmas Day. “Each year, Santa receives thousands of letters from children across Australia with requests for all sorts of Christmas gifts including the latest toys and games,” Ms Corbett said. “Writing a letter to Santa is easy and fun. It is a good way for children to learn and practice their letter writing skills. If you get stuck or need help with writing your letter, Australia Post has some tips on our website, as well as decorative letter writing templates you can print from home. You could also tell your teacher about Santa Mail and get your whole class to write letters together,” Ms Corbett said. Santa Mail letters can be placed in any Australia Post red post box or in-store at selected post offices. For more information including a range of fun Christmas activities, games, puzzles and educational resources for the holidays, including tips on letter writing, visit Australia Post’s Santa Mail website at www.auspost.com.au/education/santamail.

Show and Rodeo
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Working together Last month we saw the town work together to raise money and awareness of an illness which touches so many lives - Cancer. Many organisations, businesses and individuals gave up their time voluntarily to run events and decorate their shopfronts for this cause. It is a good example of what can happen when people really work together for a greater good. On of the other things that happens when a group of people works for a common goal, is that is strengthens the community’s sense of well being and through that the individuals’ sense of well being. No matter how a person may enjoy their own company, a basic human need is to belong, to feel good about themselves and to have other human contact. As John Donne said, “No man is an island”. In a world that can seem very hostile when media reports are filled with violence and fear, it is beneficial to pause and appreciate what is good in the world. We live in a town that just spent a month doing something that will not immediately benefit any one person, but may over time benefit many people. Just think about that - and after you watch the news tonight, think about it again. You’ll probably need to.
Dear Keer Its been a happy and successful year for the Canungra Show Society, with both rodeo and show put to bed on time and planning for next year well underway. The Canungra Hotel Rodeo in July attracted a big crowd of 3100 people, the many regulars boosted by new faces eager to experience a real country rodeo with national competitors on the program. A safe and exciting night. The Show in August had great weather and attracted a 2000+ family based gate. It was a really good local turnout, with performances and artwork by Canungra Primary a top attraction and a quality entertainment program featuring Canungra FoodWorks Rooftop Express Show and closing with a big fireworks display sponsored by Bendigo Bank. Rodeo and Show are important contributors to the economy of our district and to the high quality of life we enjoy here. The CAHIS committee has been fortunate in attracting the support of local business and family sponsors and of dozens of the volunteers who help with set up, running and clean up of events. We couldn’t do it without them and we value their involvement very much. To say “thanks for your help” we are hosting an afternoon event soon for volunteers and sponsors. Invitations are going out now but we haven’t been able to contact some of our shyer volunteers so we are hoping these people will contact you if they’d like to attend. For next year’s Show we are redesigning the layout of the sideshow and horse event access areas, moving these apart. We hope to increase the number of horse classes and make the main ring a better and safer place for competitors. Works have begun at the showground in conjunction with the Canungra Sport and Recreation Association and are expected to be completed this month. The committee is looking forward to celebrating this year’s achievements and then getting on with next year’s events . Everyones invited in 2016! Airlie Worrall, President, Canungra AH&I Society

Canungra Police Watch
Craig Roberts, Officer in Charge, Canungra Police Station
After 34 years in the Queensland Police Force (now Service) Senior Constable Gordon Henderson is finally hanging up his hat and taking leave prior to a well-earned retirement. Gordon has been a valuable member of Canungra Station since transferring here from Brisbane in 1989. He is not only a local Policeman but a respected member of the community and his contributions to the QPS will be sorely missed. If you see Gordon in the street say g’day and thanks for his efforts and sacrifices, as there have been many over the years. A big thanks to the community members who have assisted recently in the identification and apprehension of offenders in relation to stolen vehicles. Early last month on the ball locals alerted us to a young man in a bread truck in the Biddaddaba area acting suspiciously. As a result of the information we located and arrested a 22 year old Gold Coast man in relation to the stolen truck as well as other property and driving offences. On the same weekend information from the public lead to the arrest of four other men in a stolen vehicle from the Gold Coast. The men and vehicle were located in the Witheren area. All have been put before the Courts and will hopefully be dealt with appropriately. We can’t be everywhere at once so we do rely on timely public information to solve crimes. There will be a number of traffic operations conducted in the coming weeks as we get closer to the school holidays. Don’t be the driver caught out. Focus will be on the Fatal 5 – Speed, Impaired (Drink/Drug) Driving, Seatbelts, Distraction (Mobile telephones/texting) and Fatigue. There will also be continued focus on motorcyclists, some of whom have no regard for themselves or anyone else on the road. Please remember, if you see or hear anything that may be illegal or suspicious, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please come and see us or contact the station on one of the below numbers: Canungra Police 55435120, Police Link on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Countdown For Pool Safety Changes
Scenic Rim pool owners have weeks left to ensure their pool complies with mandatory Queensland fencing and safety requirements. All pools, including spas and some portable pools, need to comply with a uniform Queensland pool safety standard by 1st December 2015 or earlier if the property is sold or leased. Mayor John Brent said Council was working in partnership with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) to raise awareness of the importance of pool safety compliance. “As part of our awareness campaign, Council is providing free resuscitation signage to pool owners at our Customer Service Centres in Beaudesert, Boonah and Tamborine Mountain. “Such signage is a mandatory pool safety requirement,” Cr Brent said. A swimming pool is defined as an above or below ground structure principally used for swimming or bathing. If your portable pool or spa holds more than 300 millimetres of water, has a volume of more than 2000 litres or has a filtration system, the new laws may apply to you. To find out more visit the QBCC website at www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/home-building-owners/ pool-safety which provides an explanation of the steps pool owners need to take to ensure their pool is compliant.

Spring Clearing
Lack of energy is a major cause of why people don’t feel like exercising, and it’s often not a physical condition, but an emotional one. Here’s a hypothetical energy-zapping day: You wake and worry about your work day ahead, you think about exercising but can’t be bothered, then feel a failure for constantly procrastinating. You get frustrated with the kids, annoyed with your partner, the car won’t start and you’re late for work. Your desk is a mess and you’ve lost the ‘to do’ list you made yesterday. To ease your frustration you eat cheesecake for morning tea, and vow to start your exercise program tomorrow. That evening you dislike what you see in the mirror and regret the cheesecake. The kids drive you insane, you blame them for your lack of energy, you worry about your parenting skills, and grab a beer or wine to ease your tension. Exhausted you crash on the sofa, watch a depressing newscast and some mindless reality TV. Imagine that you get 100 energy dollars deposited into your account every day. You’ve got complete control over how you spend them. Are you wasting them on worry, holding grudges or blaming others? Every one of these frustrations, worries, negative thoughts and emotions leak energy dollars from your account. You’ve used all your dollars - and none of them were spent doing something creative or rewarding! If you get a late night it’s like an overdraft, meaning you might start the next day with only 90 dollars. To increase your personal energy stores take a look at where your energy is leaking. Go through every area of life (physical body, emotions, relationships, living circumstances, finances, work, health, etc) and notice which things drain you. Think of at least one thing you can do to lessen or remove it. Maybe a conversation to ease a draining relationship, get the car serviced, tidy your desk and office, pack a healthy snack for work, or spend time to clear out closets to tidy your living area. It’s Spring! Time to prune out the dead wood, and let new shoots grow!

Prevent Ingrown Hairs and Have Smooth, Beach-Ready Skin!
I know last month was Halloween, but there’s no need to still look like a hairy, scary monster! Now is the time to get your legs and bikini area in beach-ready shape. Ingrown hairs appear when a strand of hair curls into the skin and grows in the wrong direction after waxing or shaving. How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Exfoliate the skin before having a wax. This will ensure that there is no dry skin build-up to prevent hairs from being waxed effectively. Apply an exfoliating scrub in the shower, 24 hours after waxing. It is important to wait 24 hours as your skin is highly sensitive straight after waxing. Rub your skin vigorously with a towel or exfoliating sponge every time you shower, especially in the bikini area. The hair in that region is curly and therefore ingrown problems are more common and persistent. Apply a moisturiser to prevent dry, itchy skin. Don’t overuse the moisturiser in the bikini area as this area is naturally moist. Wear loose fitting clothes after waxing to help prevent ingrown hairs. Ingrown Hair Recipe • 10 drops Melrose Essential Oil Blend* • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil • 5 drops Thyme Essential Oil • 1 cup Coconut Oil Mix essential oils and coconut oil in a jar. Rub onto waxed skin daily for best results.

Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi) By Melissa Whitby
Jaffa is a sweet man that would love to be part of your family he a bit shy but loves his back rubs and would be a great addition to any home. His fur is super soft and sooooo good to pat. You could literally spend hours giving him cuddles. Jaffa is two years old and is $50. He is vaccinated, wormed and desexed.
Penny is a beautiful girl who requires a home where she can laze around and enjoy the sunshine. She can be a little timid with strangers and would like a home where she is the only cat. She is affectionate and likes to be held. Come meet this stunning girl today. Penny is seven years old, she is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Adopting an adult cat or dog has a lot of advantages - their personality has already been formed so you will have a good idea of what they are like and whether they will suit you; they may have already had some basic training; you don’t have to go through the destructive puppy stage; and they still have a lot of love to give. To meet Jaffa, Penny or any of the other animals, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

Last month, I travelled to Far North Queensland to look for wildlife I had observed years ago but never had the opportunity to photograph. The wildlife species high on my list were Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo and the Southern Cassowary. Over the years, I have met some incredibly dedicated individuals who commit themselves to saving particular wildlife species. One such individual is Dr Karen Coombes. Karen has created the Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre at Malanda, which rehabilitates and cares for injured Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo. If you are looking for a Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo, Karen is the best person to ask! The Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo is one of two species of Tree-Kangaroo in Australia. This species is best identified by its dark black face, black feet, long, black tail and contrasting pale upperparts. The Atherton Tablelands is the last stronghold for this amazing wildlife species. Overall, the Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo is restricted to rainforest between Cardwell and Mossman in Queensland. This species of treekangaroo is threatened due to habitat loss and fragmentation, car hits and being attacked by dogs. Tree-Kangaroos can be incredibly hard animals to find as they are camouflaged in their rainforest environment. They will come to the ground to move from area to area which makes them vulnerable when moving between suitable remaining habitat. Their diet is predominately leaves and I have readily observed this animal feeding through the day. Someone of you maybe wondering whether I got to see a wild Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo and photograph the animal. With Karen’s help, I certainly did and it was an incredible moment. They are a perfect example of how Australia has incredibly unique wildlife that we must protect. For anyone who is interested in supporting Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroos that are looked after by the Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre Ltd, please visit their Facebook page. I felt incredibly privileged to share the space of such a beautiful creature after many years and I sincerely hope that I have inspired someone who has read this article to take the time to help these amazing Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo creatures..

Canungra State School goes PINK
To support the community’s promotion of Cancer Awareness, the school held a Pink Day on Friday 9th October which raised over $250 from student donations.
Family Fun Day and Annual Book Fair
A Family Fun Day and Annual Book Fair was held on Saturday 24th October. Each class had a stall at the Fun Day, as well as the Green Team and Student Council. Food, jumping castles, face painting and dunking teachers were all part of the fun. There was a real feeling of community spirit nad the students enjoyed the activities and helping out with their class stalls. Approximately $4,000 was raised from the stalls on the day. This is the school’s major fundraiser for the year so it was great to see so much support from the community. The Book Fair was open in the Library from Tuesday 20th through to Saturday 24th.

Green Team News
By Fiona Williams, greenteamcss@gmail.com
We have had another busy month at the Green Team. Firstly we had amazing success at the school’s Family Fun Day. We made our famous pies and rolls and they were once again very popular and we sold out! Thanks to all the families who supported our stall. We also had some amazing fresh produce from our school gardens for sale and these too were snavelled up quickly! A big thank you needs to go to Mark Spring who every year donates a huge array of plants to sell at our stall. So thanks Mark and Vicky for your continued support. November also sees us continuing with planting on our creek bank. We have been lucky enough to have funding from grants to allow us to employ a contractor to plant around 450 new plants on the creek bank where it is too hazardous to hold working bees. Thanks to Tim Whines from Forest Restoration and his crew for their hard work. Once again a big thank you to all our volunteers who help our fundraising events, we could not do these without you. We raised over $500 at the Fun Day and I am very proud of the efforts of everyone involved.

Mars stays in Virgo for the whole month. On the surface this inhibits your flow. Deal with the superficial discomfort gracefully however and a deeper positive can be seen. Stop trying to place life into a template that is inaccurate and unreal. To do so will cut frustration off at the pass.

Though the Sun has moved into Libra, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are all in Virgo. News from St Luke’s
By Di Ayscough
The past month has seen Canungra turn pink for breast cancer and this has certainly shown how the town banding together for a cause can bring great success and recognition. So what is next in Canungra? St Luke’s has a busy calendar leading up to Christmas. We recently celebrated St Luke’s Day with a special breakfast after church. On Saturday 7th November St George’s on Tamborine Mountain will hold their annual Spring Fair and and St Luke’s will hold our annual Christmas street stall on Saturday 12th December. This stall is always laden with many gifts for Christmas and is a great way to save making shortbread, decorated cakes and much more. It has been said, it is hard to believe how early Christmas is being advertised in the shopping centres. With so many sad things happening in our world it is important to have such a joyous occasion to look forward to. It gives hope and love to us all and at St Luke’s we celebrate friendship, caring, love and hope the whole year. Sincere thanks to Sonya and Sasha Gubbins for organising the Christmas Shoe Boxes again this year. Eleven boxes have been packed and sent overseas to make Christmas very special for eleven children who suffer hardship and sadness on a daily basis. As we move closer to Christmas we would love to have you join us. Why not come along for a cuppa after church? When you hear the bell ring on Sunday morning it is a signal for Rev Valerie to lead our service. This is also a time when you are welcome to join in at St Lukes. Wishing you many blessings.
Suduko
Solution page 35
This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

The Tamborine Mountain Cricket Club Inc. is very grateful to Jon Krause, Member for Beaudesert and John Flanagan, President of Tamborine Mountain Sports Association for their support in our application to the Gaming Fund from which we received a grant of $35,000 towards the cost of cricket nets at Long Road In addition, the Club would like to thank the Scenic Rim Regional Council (and rate payers) for two grants of $2000 towards pitch dirt and lazer work and $1000 towards pitch covers over the last year. Our club fields three junior teams: under 11’s, 12’s and 14’s and four senior teams: 3rd’s, 4th’s and two over 40’s. Most of our 4th grade team comes from Canungra and more players are welcome. Pilots release balloons in memory of Darren Rickertt
Shadow over Canungra Classic
Flying was cancelled on the last day of the Annual Canungra Hang Gliding Classic following the death of competitor, Darren Rickertt in a crash near Biddaddaba on Friday 9th October. On the compeition Facebook page, Walt Nielsen posted, “I’m sorry to report that one of our local club pilots Darren Rickertt has died in a tragic accident during the Canungra Classic hang gliding competition. Well liked by all who knew him he will be sorely missed by his many friends and family.” The Canungra Classic attracted a strong field of 57 pilots from across the globe, with World Champion Hungarian pilot Attila Bertok winning the competition, Beechmont pilot Johnny Durand placed second and Australian pilot Glen McFarlane placed third. At the conclusion of the competition, pilots gathered together to support each other and released balloons in memory of Darren. A former resident of Canungra, Darren leaves behind his wife of two years, Amy Rickertt. It was the first fatal crash in the 23 year history of the competition.

Sport Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby Moriarty Park has had a tremendous ‘face lift’ in recent weeks with a great painting job done for us by the boys from Palen Creek ... a big thank you to the team and to Kayleen Richter for orchestrating the task. Council kindly provided the finance for the paint and tools and Jason from Canungra Hardware had the run around to supply all the above - I reckon he cringed every time he heard my voice on the other end of the phone but he’s such a great bloke and always soooo cheery! Thanks mate!! A huge amount of appreciation to those who have had their classes disrupted by the works happening inside, especially Shirley’s Yoga group and Mary’s fitness class. Thank goodness at least the weather was with us in the most part. Mark Campbell from Competition Scaffolding generously provided the scaffold and the time to put it up and take it down! Thanks Mark!
Moriarty Park hosted a car boot cum garage sale at Moriarty Park on 24th October as part of the Scenic Rim Regional Council Garage Sale Trail and as a fundraiser for our Turning Canungra Pink for Breast Cancer Research. Several families turned up to sell their wares and whilst we were not overwhelmed with customers I think all had a good morning and some serious bargains were found. $200 was raised on the day for our Pink cause. Foodworks Canungra provided us with food for the canteen which was greatly appreciated - cheers Tony and crew for your ongoing support in all we do ... and the super Mary Cecil and Davo baked up a fantastic array of pink yummies ... cupcakes, cheesecake, caramel slice. What’s more they are already planning Christmas goodies for the Carols on Saturday 5th December. They both worked in the canteen all morning which freed Bren up to chat and sell some stuff! We also plan to have a car boot sale at the Carols, enquiries to Bren on 0414 435 919 or bren.dalby@bigpond.com. Please come along to our Christmas Carols - see ad in the Times, on Saturday
5th December, where lots of entertainment will be provided for your enjoyment ... this event will be sponsored by Canungra Op Shop, Canungra Foodworks and Scenic Rim Regional Council.
