The Small Town with a Big Heart
The Canungra Chamber of Commerce were overwhelmed by support for their public health initiative, Turning Canungra Pink. Throughout October the town was blanketed in pink with a number of events organised to raise vital funds and awareness for Cancer Council Queensland’s work in cancer control. Events on the final weekend included the Long Table Dinner on Friday 28th October, a Pink Golf Day and the Ride, Wine and Dine hosted by Valley View Equine Group on Saturday, and the Canungra Valley Markets on Sunday. Beechmont, joined Canungra and boosted their fundraising efforts, with a Pink Sports Day held on Sunday 30th October. The message was spread far and wide with Turning Canungra Pink featured in Australia Post’s national newsletter along with a photo of Canungra Post Office wrapped in pink. Canungra Chamber of Commerce event coordinator Tamlyn Geiger said the initiative had been a success so far. “Along with a series of events and fundraising opportunities, shop fronts had pink window displays and trees have been decorated in pink,” she said. “The amount of support that Canungra businesses and residents have shown this year has been amazing. “What is more incredible is the momentum Turning Canungra Pink has been gathering, with outside groups wanting to join in with the fundraising – we have started planning for next year already.” “I would like to thank everyone who has contriubted to Turning Canungra Pink over

a stall at the street market and a monster garage sale as part of the nation-wide Garage Sale Trail, raising over $360. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said local support made a vital difference to the charity’s work. “With the ongoing support and fundraising efforts of the Turning Canungra Pink team, we are making a tangible difference in the fight against cancer and we cannot thank them enough,” Ms Clift said. Cancer Council Queensland is an independent, community-based charity, the achievements of which are made possible by the generosity of Queenslanders. There is a big list...” said Tamlyn. “I would like to give a special mention to Alex, Heather and Warren from Canungra Village Garden Project for always being there to help and Michelle from My Country Escape for all she has done.” “These people, along with my good friends Janine, Damon, Nino, Deb and Virginia have always been there when neeeded.” “Also, Helen Gillies from the Cancer Council. It has been lovely working with Helen over the month and we have had some fun and laughs. What a lovely ambasador for such a sad cause,” she said. Alex Griffiths from the Canungra Village Garden Project said the team were proud to support Turning Canungra Pink by hosting

Community Bank® Opens the Doors
The Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch celebrated its official launch on Wednesday 19th October with a very special community event. In excess of 100 local shareholders, residents, business people and community members joined Bendigo Bank personnel and more than a dozen members of neighbouring Community Bank® Branch representatives for the celebration at The Outpost Café. Canungra & District Community Bank® Chair, Janine Rockliff introduced Branch Manager, Vanessa Skinner and her staff to the guests with the official branch opening performed by Noel Jessup, Queensland State Manager and Mark Cunneen, Head of Community Banking and Engagement. The branch opening marks the culmination of over 3 years of hard work from local volunteers who rallied the surrounding community to raise over $830,0000 in start-up capital for their Community Bank® branch. Local resident Derek Finch said when the last bank closed in Canungra 30 years ago, the locals weren’t worried.
Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch staff present a cheque to Tamlyn Geiger of Turning Canungra Pink and Helen Gillies of Cancer Council Queensland
“We thought other banks would be scrambling to get here, but that didn’t happen,” said Derek, “We waited 30 years, but we are happy to have a bank in town again now.” A percentage of profits from the Branch will be returned to the community through
grants and sponsorship. Board Chairperson, Janine Rockliff, announced that this support would begin before the Branch had opened its doors. She presented a cheque for $2,000 to Turning Canungra Pink, sponsorship of the ‘Pink’ polo shirts used this year.

Remembrance Day Service
Splattered with Somme mud, a small pocket diary kept by Private Stan Rosser throughout 1917 tells its own story of the life of an Australian soldier on the Western Front. Some of its pages have been lost, and its penciled entries faded and barely legible, but the diary is treasured as a piece of family and Great War history by Stan’s descendants. It tells of a young man caught up in one of the most momentous events of modern times, with wry observations of people and places. One of the most poignant entries is a simple request: “If I should get killed, will the finder please return the notebook and its contents to my mother, Mrs WH Davidson, Tamborine Mountain, Queensland, Australia.” Stan Rosser was one of a number of young men from the local district who volunteered for service in World War 1 and fought in the Battle of the Somme one hundred years ago. His story, and the stories of all locals who answered the call are recorded in lasting remembrance on the Canungra Answered the Call website www.canungraansweredthecall. org.au .
On Friday November 11th, our town will pause to respectfully remember their bravery and sacrifice. Canungra’s Remembrance Day service will commence at 10.45am in D J Smith Park resulting with the playing of the Last Post at 11am followed by one minute’s silence. Residents and visitors are invited to attend. 60,000 young men from cities and towns across Australia made the supreme sacrifice in World War 1, 45,000 of them on the Western Front alone. Australia’s Roll of Honour now carries the names of 102,815 servicemen and women from all wars and conflicts. Remembrance Day is not a public holiday but many workers will stop and pause for one minute’s silence at 11am on 11th November. Others will follow the tradition of wearing a small red poppy, the symbol of Remembrance, and the inspiration for the poem In Flanders Fields which will be recited at the service by students of Canungra State School. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch, comprising veterans and ex service personnel, will conduct the service with the assistance of
Stan Rosser
Army Chaplain James Pearce, keynote speaker Tom Sharp, piper Bren Dalby and bugler T D Hunt. Those wishing to lay wreaths or personal tributes should contact the RSL President on 0418 887 762.

Ready for A Christmas Treat
Canungra Women’s Web met recently to do some early Christmas preparation, or to eat some delicious Sorbet Ice Cream Cake, prepared by Linda Ashton! About 20 women met at the Canungra Bowls Club for Linda’s entertaining and informative (not to mention tasty) cooking demonstration. The Sorbet Ice Cream Cake is easy to prepare and delicious - as everyone discovered when Linda’s husband, Ray, brought in a few Linda had prepared earlier! Everyone got to participate in the process, from passing around the bowls as they were being prepared to getting to lick the bowl/spoon at the end! Lots of laughs were had and it was a great morning, as Women’s Web always is. Women’s Web is a social group for women of all ages. The group meets fortnightly on a Tuesday, either at Canungra Bowls Club (‘home’) or at various outings planned in January and July for the following six months. Organiser Robyn Curtis said activities have included Melbourne Cup Day at Binna Burra, CPR Training, an information session Suzanne Roberts of Informed Conveyancing Lawyers and the Christmas Party is a Boat Cruise along the Tweed River. The cost is only $2 for the home gatherings and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information contact Robyn on 5543 4725.

What’s Happening to our Men?
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Why we’re Turning Pink... As everyone who has ventured through town this month will know, during October, Canungra raised awareness and funds for cancer. Various businesses held events, put plants and tins out for donations and decorated their shopfronts to help this cause. At the end of the month, on 30th October, I had a sharp reminder of what it was all for. Terry Sharland, who I got to know through the Canungra Show Society, passed away after fighting cancer for several years. Even people who had only known Terry for a short time describe him as ‘a gentleman’ and ‘a great bloke’. Because he was. Terry always had time for you. He enjoyed mentoring people and helping where he could. He was very involved in the sport of Rodeo and particularly in supporting junior rodeo events. Nothing was ever too much trouble, he knew stuff and was happy to impart his knowledge. He gave his time and energy to the sport he loved. It was primarily Terry’s influence that led to this year’s Canungra Rodeo being one of the most successful ever held. Above all, he was a really good man. A friend put it better than I can: He was that type of guy with such a large personality that even the smallest contact with him was big. Some people are just great. RIP Terry Sharland. You will be very sadly missed.
On average, Australian men die four years younger than women, live with worse health and carry the greater burden of chronic disease. On the cusp of the hairy season, global men’s health charity the Movember Foundation has today released a survey that reveals the true state of men’s health around the world, and is urging all Australians to act fast to stop men dying too young. The five-country survey of over 10,000 men and women shows that men deal with life’s big challenges in ways that can have long-term consequences for their physical and mental health. The research revealed: • Nearly half (46 per cent) of the men who had been through a stressful life event such as a relationship breakdown or sudden job loss during the past year reported experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviours • The men surveyed were more likely than women surveyed to cope with stressful life events in unhealthy ways, such as drinking, drugs, taking more risks and becoming more aggressive • Men over 40 don’t recognise this is the peak age for risk of intentional nonaccidental injury, such as self-harm or suicide. The Movember Foundation commissioned the survey to better understand the core issues affecting men’s health and wellbeing to address the crisis affecting men around the world. Adam Garone, co-founder of the Movember Foundation said the survey revealed that losing a job or experiencing a relationship breakdown are difficult times that can rock men to the core. “Men take their own lives at three times the rate of women. The results of the survey across the five countries exposes the magnitude of men’s vulnerability when dealing with particular crisis points in life,” said Mr Garone. The survey also found stark differences in the ways men and women respond to these stressful life events, with men reporting coping behaviours that can affect their health and wellbeing and make life harder in the long run. For example, the men surveyed were more likely to respond to tough times by increasing alcohol, tobacco or drug consumption (35%), becoming aggressive (21%) and taking more risks (27%). The results paint a confronting picture of how men respond during stressful times which may contribute to health and wellbeing issues that cut men’s lives short. In many cases, it’s a vicious cycle of tough times contributing to poor physical and mental health, that can lead to further health challenges in the future. “We know that these are times when exercise, good sleep, talking, expert advice, staying connected with friends, and the support of loved ones are vital for coping and can reduce the impact on a man’s health and wellbeing,” added Mr Garone. People can support the Movember Foundation’s efforts to stop men dying too young by growing a Mo in Movember, taking on the Move challenge and doing something active for men’s health or throwing or going to a Movember event. Join the movement at Movember.com.

One of Life’s Gentlemen
Terry Sharland was a rare breed these days - he was one of life’s gentlemen. When he passed away on 30th October 2016, he left behind a great legacy in the town of Canungra through his association with the Canungra Rodeo. Although he never lived here, the town and its people were close to his heart. Canungra was the place of the rodeo Terry called his ‘hometown rodeo’, and he was involved for over 20 years - initially as a participant, then judge, then the main rodeo organiser for Canungra AH&I Society. Terry first became interested in rodeos while in agricultural college in the 1960s, where he, along with some friends, rode on the bulls and horses they were caring for. After college he dabbled in various jobs before joining milk company Pauls and moving to Darwin in 1970 with wife Marilyn, where he both took part and helped organise the Darwin Rodeo. Both his son Brett and daughter Kim were born in Darwin. The family moved back to Brisbane after ten years and then to the Gold Coast, where Terry became President of the Currumbin Horse Club. He and Brett took part in camp drafting there together, which led them to participate in the Canungra Rodeo.
Obituary
Terry Sharland at Canungra Rodeo arena in 2014. Photo: Chloe Pickard
He acted as the chief rodeo organiser since 1993, and the Rodeo benefitted from his vision and new ideas. One of Terry’s improvements was instead of the usual two judges, he placed two judges down each end of the arena to make judging more efficient. Terry’s last Canungra Rodeo, held in July this year, was the most successful rodeo held in Canungra in over 20 years.
Terry also belonged to rodeo organisations such as the National Rodeo Association and judged rodeos across Queensland. Not even a bull smashing his leg while judging a rodeo in Gympie in 2002 stopped his passion for the sport. A service to celebrate Terry’s life will be held on Monday 7th November at 12 noon at the Eco Memorial Park located at 21 Quinns Hill Road, Stapylton.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen welcomed news of the State’s latest eco-tourism partnership with O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. “I think Scenic Rim is well on the way to becoming Queensland’s premier eco-tourism and glamping destination, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience our unique wilderness, both within our picturesque national parks and the surrounding environment,” Cr Christensen said. In recent months the State Government has approved two private eco-tourism projects in the State’s national parks, both located within the Scenic Rim. Cr Christensen said O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, operated by the O’Reilly family, and Spicers Group, owned by the Turner family, have been given permission to deliver innovative ventures in Lamington and Main Range national parks respectively. “The O’Reillys and Turners are both synonymous with tourism and travel in Queensland and have a reputation as custodians of the natural environment,” he said. O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat will redevelop Green Mountains Campground in Lamington National Park to provide camping options ranging from semi-permanent safari tents, to powered sites for personal tents and campervans, with communal amenities. Spicers Group is developing the Scenic Rim Trail, a 50-kilometre trek comprising walking tracks and fire trails, linked by eco-camps at overnight stops in Main Range National Park. “These eco-tourism ventures will further enhance our exciting tourism offering here in Scenic Rim,” Cr Christensen said. “Importantly these projects will deliver sustainable outcomes and help preserve the unique splendour of our national parks which have attracted generation of visitors.”

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Shaping SEQ
The Mayor, four fellow councillors and I attended the annual Local Government Association Queensland Conference last week where Deputy Premier, the Hon Jackie Trad MP, launched the new Shaping SEQ draft regional plan. This plan provides a blueprint for planning and development in south-east Queensland for the next 50 years. The conference had some exceptional guest speakers who offered thought-provoking comment on issues and directions as we move to communities of the future. The draft regional plan is now out for community consultation and you may like to view it at www.qld.gov.au/shapingseq and make a comment. There will be a formal community consultation session in Beaudesert in early December.
Queensland Audit Office Report
QAO recently released a scathing report on the long-term sustainability of some councils in Queensland. However, I am pleased to advise that Scenic Rim Regional Council was not condemned but rather listed among Queensland’s top five performing councils. I continue to believe that the tough decisions taken in the early days of the newly amalgamated SRRC and supported by the community (sometimes reluctantly) and our attention to asset management have played a large part in this positive outcome.
Australia Day Nominations
It’s that time again to nominate for Australia Day awards those quiet achievers in our community who never seek recognition but are very deserving of it. Nominations close on 11th November and forms are available on Council’s website or at Customer Contact Centres and libraries.
Event Planning For 2017
If you or your community group have an event planned for 2017, make sure you let Council’s Tourism Officer know so it can be included on the popular www.visitscenicrim.com.au website. This will ensure your event is publicised in a monthly newsletter, on social media and in a weekly radio update outside the region. Best of all it is FREE advertising. Tourism is worth more than $150 million annually to the Scenic Rim economy. To put your event on the Scenic Rim Regional Events Calendar for 2017, send your event details to tourism@ scenicrim.qld.gov.au
Reptiles Of The Scenic Rim
This beautiful guide to the diverse array of reptiles found within the Scenic Rim was launched last week - the result of a partnership between Council’s Environmental Department and leading herpetologist and author Steve Wilson. The photography is amazing and Steve certainly has a love of some reptiles that we don’t! Bren Dalby and members of the Canungra Village Garden are selling the books in the Canungra community and these will make great Christmas gifts.
History Made In Canungra
Congratulations to all who have worked tirelessly over the past two years to establish a community bank branch in Canungra. On the morning of Monday 24th October, the doors opened at the Canungra and District Community Bendigo Bank - an historic moment in Canungra. The first profit-based contribution has already been given out in the form of a $2000 cheque towards the Turning Canungra Pink breast cancer fundraising project for the month of October.

Nature’s Gems
AWL Pets of
Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus Fuliginosus)
the Month
By Melissa Whitby Many Australians are familiar with the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, which has a distribution that runs along the entire east coast of Australia. However, what many people in the east do not realise is that there is a western counterpart to the Eastern Grey Kangaroo in Western Australia and South Australia. This western counterpart is known as the Western Grey Kangaroo. Eastern and Western Grey Kangaroos have evolved features which make them very distinct from each other. The features which separate the Western Grey Kangaroo is the colour of the fur which is a dark brown, long ears and dark facial features. As previously mentioned, Western Grey Kangaroos are found in Western Australia and South Australia and their range has extended to now overlap with the range of Eastern Grey Kangaroos in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. The Western Grey Kangaroo prefers to eat short green grass but will also browse on shrubs. Like other kangaroo species, Western Grey Kangaroos rest in the shade of trees during the hottest part of the day. Western Grey Kangaroos have shorter reproduction phases than Eastern Grey Kangaroos. During the mating season, mobs of Western Grey Kangaroos have both males and females (spring and early summer) and single sex groups are more common in non-breeding times of the year. The preferred habitat of Western Grey Kangaroos includes shrubland, farmland, woodlands and sclerophyll forest. Throughout their range, Western Grey Kangaroos are considered abundant and rainfall is the dominant influence on population abundance. In my travels, I have observed Western Grey Kangaroos near Albany in Western Australia and the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. It is certainly worth keeping an eye out for the Western Grey Kangaroos in western Queensland. This macropod species is thriving throughout Australia and I am sure that I will most certainly see them in the future if I am to visit Western Australia and South Australia again. Although, Western Grey Kangaroos are a common species, I always remind myself that their presence is just as important in the Australian landscape as threatened macropod species like the Yellow-footed Western Grey Kangaroo Rock-wallaby.

Echidna - Who Does It Think It Is? By Susan Cully The echidna has some funny ancestors. 200 million years ago some early mammals lived amongst the dinosaurs and the pterosaurs. The first mammals and the last mammal-like reptiles imparted their anatomical features to the echidna and the platypus - egglaying mammals, the monotremes. The echidna egg is the size of a grape, and is soft and leathery like a reptile egg. To ‘lay’ the egg she curls her tail over her own belly to deposit the egg into a pouch created by the ‘thickening’ of ridges of abdominal muscle. The single egg hatches within the pouch after 10 days. The youngster will leave the pouch at 2-3 months because its spines get prickly but it continues to stick its snout into the pouch to suckle for another 3-4 months. The young echidna then needs a burrow for another 6 months while growing to independence. Echidnas eat ants, termites, grubs and worms as well as beetles and moth larvae. Possessing no teeth, they grind their food between the tongue and the bottom of the mouth. Understorey, that ‘messy’ tangle of knee-high shrubs and vines and grasses, is essential habitat, providing safety from predators as well as the smorgasbord of delicacies they love to eat. Burrows for the youngster to share with its mother will be dug amongst fallen logs and branches, tree stumps, rocks and leaf litter. Do you like echidnas? Please talk to your neighbours... a ‘neighbourhood’ approach to the establishment of echidna habitat/ corridors with adjoining properties can help save them. Native vegetation and woodlots can be used to create shelterbelts, habitat corridors and movement corridors. Domestic dogs and cats are both potential predators of echidnas. Don’t let your pets wander unsupervised at night— this will help safeguard your pets as well as the wildlife! Watch for them on the road they cannot move fast enough for many drivers.
Racehorse Retirement
With horse welfare being a top priority for Aquis Farm, the prestigious thoroughbred racing organisation has implemented a re-training pro- gram for retired racehorses. This includes horses that have raced here in Australia and also horses that have raced in Hong Kong. Two horses have already been successfully re-homed through the program, and Aquis currently has a team of horses in re-training at the farm, with more recently retired horses on the way from Hong Kong. Aquis’ current team of ex racehorses include: • Bayonet by Murtajill won HK$142,432 - trained by Danny Shum • Classy Victor by Pins, won HK$29,200 - trained by Tony Millard • Sparkling B by Bel Espirit, won HK$244,786 - trained by Tony Millard • Spur Fortune by Flying Spur won $10,900 - trained by Steve O’Dea • Spurtonic by Flying Spur won $497,210 - trained by Steve O’Dea • Too Fast by Haatef, won HK$274,370 - trained by John Moore Aquis Farm says their services to the horse industry services are continuous from birth to retirement from racing. They ensure that all horses are nurtured and cared for to the highest standards in the industry. Once a racehorse has been retired, Aquis’ experienced trainers will carefully assess the horse for retraining in another discipline. Once adequately retrained, the horse is transferred to a suitable equestrian sport home. Keep an eye on Aquis’ Instagram account @aquisfarm for updates on the retired racehorses.

Life is giving you plenty of time to absorb and assimilate. You might want to rush things along, but the real pace of change is much slower than our expectations. This is an important time in which you have the chance to really get to know what you feel, and make plans accordingly.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough It is with much sadness I report the passing of Dawn Page a very dear lady from St Luke’s congregation. Dawn was well known in the Canungra community but to St Luke’s she was a pillar of strength and a very prominent and devoted parishioner. Dawn was President of the Guild for 25 years until she retired from the role after turning 80. I had the dubious task of filling the position and while a little nervous at the task ahead, Dawn always encouraged and guided me. Dawn’s funeral service saw St Luke’s overflowing with a large crowd who gathered to say goodbye and show their love for such a special lady. We all feel honoured to have known Dawn and pass on our sincere condolences to her daughter Maree and all her family. Knowing Dawn’s strong faith, the words of the hymn, The Lord’s My Shepherd which was sung during the service bring a sense of joy and celebration to know Dawn will now be in eternal life with our Lord. With Christmas, fast approaching we are now planning our end of year street stall. The stall will be held on Saturday the 17th December in the main street and the produce will include decorated Christmas cakes, home cooking, some bric a brac, plants and a raffle with prizes very suited to fill your Christmas table. As always your support would be greatly appreciated for this stall. We will soon display the times for our Christmas services at St Luke’s so perhaps you may like to join in for the special service. You would be made welcome any time.

Bagpipes and Balloons - Taking off from Moriarty Park on 15th October as part of Turning Canungra Pink
Moriarty Park News
Well what a wonderful month of ‘PINK’; huge congratulations to all involved, at any level (and I reckon that covers almost everyone in and around the area which is just magic). Massive thanks to Murray from Go Ballooning who, having passed through Canungra and seen all our ‘pink’, and being in possession of two huge pink hot air balloons, offered his services to the venture and quick fast a launch from Moriarty Park was organised. Thanks to all in immediate surroundings (as we didn’t have time to let everyone know what was happening!) for tolerating Bren and George playing bagpipes at 5 in the morning! Murray has spent a small fortune buying a second fan to fill balloons so this is a quiet

process with Go Ballooning but Bren and George just can’t resist getting kilted and noisy! It was a truly spectacular sight from both ground and in balloon. Very very special thanks Murray and the crew. Our Christmas Carols are on 3rd December and we would love to hear from anyone who would like to be involved. Please contact Bren 0414 435 919. Gospel Road, who utilise the Moriarty Park facility every Sunday from 8am - 1pm are helping organise the Carols this year in a big way which is great . Canungra Foodworks are sponsors for the event and we are tremendously indebted to them for all they do for us. It will be a

terrific family affair with lots of music, fun, food, raffles and of course Santa!! There are more activities now available at Moriarty Park - yoga on Monday mornings and Pilates on Tuesday evenings. Dog obedience classes are held every Friday evening from 6pm and being quite well attended. This is something I have wanted to see in Canungra for many years and am very grateful to Peter and Julie for giving of their time and expertise. Our meetings are on the third Tuesday of every month and we would love to see some new faces, and the ‘old’ ones to keeping coming too!! We are a great crew but a few more would be even better!
