Pink Polo Kicks Off!

Canungra’s month long cancer awareness and fundraising month got off to an early start with the 2017 Gold Cup Pink Polo Day at Elysian Fields on Sunday 10th September. Hosted by the Queensland Polo Association and first played in 1926, the Gold Cup was traditionally a tournament played between rival clubs from across Queensland. The 2017 tournament attracted players from around Australia and New Zealand, many of whom will play in the Polo World Cup in Sydney later this year, providing spectators with a high standard of play. Winners of the games on the day were: Queensland Gold Cup: City Motor Auctions - Angelo Russo, Brodie Donovan, Bud Sorby, Rob Ballard.
Silver Cup: Toyota - Mark Huebner, Trent Walkden, Gus Aguirre, Alec White. Bronze Cup: Scanlan - Michael Callow, Morgan Ruig, Rob Ballard, Jono Scott. Copper Cup Winners Acquire Capital: Bob Greasley, James Hoey, Jonny Jones, Stuart Hoey. Tin Cup: Goondiwindi: Bridget Coulton, Paddy Glasser, Dean Fullerton, Richi Curran. The support for Turning Canungra Pink came after Mark Huebner (owner of Huebner Toyota and member of the Silver Cup winning team Toyota) heard about the fundraising event while he was looking for a charity to support the polo. Mark has also had a Toyota Yaris signwritten and displayed at the Pink Polo to assist in raising awareness.
Organiser Sam Sadlier said people who attended really enjoyed the day and were very happy to be supporting a local charity. Over $2,500 was raised on the day from donations and pre-booked picnic places. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President Desley Bird thanked Karrel Langton who took on the organisation of volunteers at very short notice. “Karrel and her team did a fantastic job in raising awareness of Turning Canungra Pink and in raising a significant amount of money which is a great start the month,” said Desley. Turning Canungra Pink is organised by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised from events in 2017 will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland and local families battling cancer.

Support for Local Groups Six community-based sport and recreation groups have secured funding for planned projects under Council’s Sport and Recreation Grants. Cr Virginia West said the purpose of the program was to support the long-term sustainability of local groups. “These groups play a vital role in providing opportunities for increased participation in physical activity within the Scenic Rim,” she said. “Sporting groups are a great vessel to build and strengthen the social fabric of our region while encouraging a more active community.” Sport and Recreation Grant recipients in the latest round included Tamborine Mountain Tennis Club, Tamborine Pony Club, Tamborine Mountain Sports Association, Canungra Area and District Golf Club, Boonah Shire Disability Support Group Boonah Shire Disability Support Group and Hayes Oval. Cr West said Council will also fund a grant to Beaudesert Little Athletics to install security equipment under the Community Grants program. She said Council’s Sport and Recreation Grants also assisted sporting groups with seed funding to support applications for additional grants from State Government initiatives. “For instance, Tamborine Mountain Golf Club used Council’s Sport and Recreation funding last year to secure an additional funding from the Get Playing Places and Spaces program to upgrade their amenities block,” she said.

Volunteers Celebrated
A host of locals from the Hinterland region, including Dan and Gregory McKenzie from Beechmont, have been recognised for their dedicated voluntary work, as recipients of the 2017 Wright Community Contribution Awards. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz presented the awards in a special ceremony at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre and praised the award winners as “unsung heroes” of the local community. “I established these awards as a way to recognise the local volunteers who deserve appreciation for their outstanding contribution to the Hinterland community,” Mr Buchholz said. “Life is short but our local volunteers generously give their time to the various community and sporting organisations that make the Hinterland area such a wonderful place to live.” Mr Buchholz said the Wright Community Contribution Awards were special in that the recipients were nominated by grateful members of the community. “These awards allow our grateful community to recognise the many dedicated and hardworking local residents of the Hinterland region,” Mr Buchholz said. Landmark Postcards
A new range of postcards featuring artworks by local artist Gerard Walker highlight unique Australian architecture of the local region. Gerard has been involved in the Open Studios for many years and enjoys painting buildings and landscapes in watercolours. The postcards are printed on high quality paper, giving them a canvas feel which complements Gerard’s artwork. Produced by The Canungra Times and available at Canungra Visitor Information Centre, Canungra Books and Art and Canungra Post Office, the cards feature local landmarks such as St Luke’s Church, St Mary’s Church and Benobble House.
Locals Welcome Improved Lamington National Park Road
Locals around Canungra have welcomed the improved road surface on Lamington National Park Road. The road, which is used to access world heritage listed Lamington National Park, was widened in a section approximately 2km long. State Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause fought doggedly for the repairs to be funded by the State Government and said that, while it had been a long time coming, the quality of the road was now greatly improved compared to the old road surface. “I’ve been lobbying government to fix this road ever since I became the local member, together with heaps of locals and Councillor Virginia West,” Mr Krause said. “The rest of the Lamington National Park Road was widened and improved about 20 years ago, but for some reason this small section was left untouched. It is good to see it finally happen – a great team effort. There’s plenty of other road issues around for the State Government to fix and I’ll keep on lobbying to get them done, too.” “As an example, I know there’s a number of Council roads that still need work after Cyclone Debbie damaged them earlier

this year, and the State should hurry up and approve Council’s plans to fix flood damaged roads.” Sarabah residents, and owners of Greenlee Farm and Cottages, Paul and Robyn Lee welcomed the roadworks on Lamington National Park Road, which were valued at approximately $700,000, as an outstanding improvement on what was there before.

“Before, when a bus and car passed it could get very dangerous due to the narrow width. Just having room for two vehicles to pass is a huge improvement and we thank Jon for helping advocate for the funding for so long to get this done.” The roadworks were undertaken by Scenic Rim Regional Council as contractor for the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

A Burst of Colour at Spring Show
A record number of 788 visitors passed through the door 2017 Spring Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants held at Canungra School of Arts Hall on the weekend of 15th and 16th September. Beaudesert & Districts Orchid and Foliage Society Show Coordinator, Peter Rice, said in addition to local visitors, many people now come from the Gold Coast and one even came from Byron Bay especially to visit the Show. All who visited were impressed by the number, quality and variety of orchids on display this year, orchids that are blooming so majestically, possibly because of the mild winter. Foliage plants are never so plentiful in early spring as many take time to recover from their “winter slumber” but there were still plenty of quality plants to be admired. “Exhibitors were not only from Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society but also from northern New South Wales and Logan as our show is an open show meaning that growers from any society can bench plants as long as they are affiliated with the Queensland Orchid Society,” said Peter. With a record crowd, members had a great day selling plants. The huge stock of quality plants available in the sales area on Saturday morning had diminished to a few plants

by the afternoon with there being a need to restock for the Sunday, which members were only too willing to do. “Buyers lined up an hour before scheduled opening time to have first choice of the best plants on sale. One buyer left with $790 worth of orchids because by buying at a show such as ours, aficionados are able increase their collections for a reasonable outlay,” said Peter.
The Canungra Times - October 2017
The guest speaker was so popular that he even scheduled an extra talk to accommodate those wanting to learn more about the growing of these spectacular plants. The Grand Champion Orchid was a beautiful Slipper Orchid exhibited by Catherine Martin of the Gold Coast and the Grand Champion Foliage Plant was a mini, pendulous, hoya, Hoya curtisii, exhibited by Lee Thorneycroft of Cedar Vale.
Give Our Community Champions The Thumbs Up
Nominations for the 2018 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards are now open across seven categories that highlight the significant contributions of citizens and community groups across the region. Bypass To Transform Highway Into High Street
The $27.5 million Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass is set to help drive the revitalisation and renewal of the town centre. “This bypass will help get the town’s heart pumping again by enabling us to work towards the creation of a more inviting community space in the centre of Beaudesert,” Mayor Greg Christensen said. The 1.5-kilometre bypass has realigned the Mt Lindesay Highway to the west of the town centre between the northern end of Brisbane St and Boonah-Beaudesert Rd. He said the bypass represented another important economic catalyst for the growing Scenic Rim region. “What this means for Council and the community is that we can now forge ahead with our plans to revitalise and renew the town centre of Beaudesert through our Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative,” he said. “Our vision is to create a town centre precinct where people can stroll, shop and perhaps dine outdoors with greater convenience and comfort, where heavy vehicles are not sharing a space with locals and visitors parking and walking. “Those trucks will no longer need to travel through a congested and constrained

They are based at Moriarty Park and are affiliated with Schutzhund Australia, training approved working line breeds such as registered German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans and Begian Shepherds. Club members train in IPO Dogsports at all levels including Tracking, Obedience and Protection. All of these activities are intended to preserve the characteristics, genetic vigour, service and sporting capabilities of the working line breeds. Club President, Corrie Metz said the current members are at different levels, training for their up coming trails. “We curently train Tuesday mornings, Wednesday nights and Friday nights,” said Corrie, “SRSDC has different membership options based on the types of training for your dog. In addition, the Club offers general obedience training which is open to all breeds and both registered and non-registered dogs. Club members are run classes from beginners to advanced, with agility training also available for those who would like to continue on after the advanced course. Corrie said they can cater for all training levels and people are welcome to start at the level their dog is at rather than starting from the beginner classes if their dog is at that level. For enquiries for IPO or Obedience training contact Corrie on 0408 267 740 or Julie Ulbrich on 0411 383 188.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
When a town pulls together Once again during October the whole town of Canungra will ‘turn pink’ to raise funds and awareness of all types of cancer. What began with one survivor’s fundraising for breast cancer research has grown into a community of people dedicated to helping others with cancer. It is an amazing testament to our community that people become so involved in the events throughout the month of October. From holding events to gathering donations or attending events, it seems that the whole town becomes involved. This year we are fortunate to have included a healing service at St Luke’s Anglican church on 15th October and also to have a world renowned oncologist to speak at the Turning Canungra Pink Dinner on 27th October. I want to thank the amazing woman who started it all - Dianne Crooks. Di started quietly fundraising for breast cancer many years ago. The fundraising grew from year to year and eventually involved the entire town with businesses and residents getting involved and funds going to Cancer Council Queensland. This year, Turning Canungra Pink is run by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce and most funds will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland but some will be used to assist local people who have been affected by cancer. It may be that they need a hand cleaning the house, gardening or with medical bills, but it is hoped that this will lighten the load for people who are under great personal stress. And thank you, Canungra, for making it all happen.
Dear Editor, One in five Queensland men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85 – our dads, brothers, grandfathers, partners and friends are at risk. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer among men in Queensland, with around 4000 men diagnosed each year on average. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and we’re urging men to help raise awareness of the disease and better understand their risk to help detect it early. While five-year survival rates for prostate cancer are drastically improving and are at 94 per cent, up from 64 per cent in the 1980’s, there’s still no time for complacency. The cause of prostate cancer is still not clear, and in the early stages, prostate cancer often doesn’t produce any symptoms. However, we do know that the risk of prostate cancer rises with age and occurs mainly in men over 60 years. Men with a family history also have an increased risk of developing the disease. It’s crucial that men understand their risk and let their GP know if they have a family history to receive the right advice on the pros and cons of prostate cancer testing. Unfortunately, there is currently no single, simple test to detect prostate cancer. The test most commonly used to aid early detection of prostate cancer is the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test but this test does not always reliably identify the presence of prostate cancer, or distinguish potentially fatal cancers from benign tumours. We recommend men speak with their GP about what is right for them, especially if they notice body changes including difficulty or pain in passing urine, or blood in urine, and any of these symptoms combined with pain in the lower back, upper thighs or pelvic region. If men have questions or concerns about prostate cancer, they should visit their GP or call Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 to access information or confidential support and referrals. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org.au. Ms Chris McMillan CEO, Cancer Council Queensland

Have Your Say! Animals Need Shade
Dear Keer, It is with deep sadness that I write to you about the situation of many animals that I see suffering without shade within the Scenic Rim Region. All animals should have the right to shade and in these extreme temperatures you can be sure that there is a whole lot of suffering that is taking place not only out in pastures but in our own backyards. I feel that it is imperative that we as a community make every effort we can to provide animals with shade as it is an animals right to have such a basic necessity. I remember how hot it was last summer in Canungra, Beaudesert and Boonah and remember how I was unable to stand in the sun for more than five minutes without feeling the brunt of this shocking heat. I saw many properties while driving around the region who were leaving their livestock exposed to extreme heat of the sun. Please contact the RSPCA and keep your case number so if you need to take further action you can. Many complaints are forwarded on to Biosecurity and the police. If still nothing happens let me know via the Animals Need Shade Facebook page. In an article by the Queensland Times journalist Ashleigh Howarth, the RSPCA inspector Laurie Stageman advises that he is concerned about the welfare of many livestock out in rural properties after touring many area’s and discovering many animals have been left out in the sun. Laurie advises that people need to be mindful of their duty of care towards their animals which is to provide appropriate living conditions and ample amounts of water. The article further states: “The RSPCA will not tolerate people who don’t provide appropriate shade or shelter for their livestock in open paddocks and round yards. “This is the law. You can be fined up to $30,000 and a maximum of one year in jail. “If there is animal cruelty involved, you could face a fine of up to $220,000 and a maximum of three years jail.” Mr Stageman said it was easy to ensure your animals were well cared for. “It’s a matter of putting two steel poles in the ground and putting up a shade sail and the animals have shade all day,” he said. “You should also ensure you have plenty of trees, not just one, for the animals to rest under. “I wouldn’t like to stand out in the sun all day. You wouldn’t like to stand out in the sun all day. So why should your animals?” Morika Elek

Bought to you by local theatre creative, Jemina Macedo, renowned director of past mountain productions ‘The Secret Garden’ and ‘A Midsummers Night’s Dream’ presents a new glitzy and glamourous theatre spectacular, The Black Opal, her own Aussie adaptation of Shakespeare’s 12th Night. Set in the decadent Art Deco era of the 1930’s, Hertiage Wines will be transformed into The Black Opal cabaret club for the month of October. A two course dinner is included as part of the show and cocktails available at the bar. This production is truly a local affair. It involves a cast of 14 local actors and a live band performing original jazz songs composed by Jemina herself. The cast ranges in ages of 16 to 78 years including local theatre royalty such as John St Clair and Gordon Issom, a stay-at-home mum itching to get back on the stage and some brilliant young emerging talent. Also starring is Rebecca Loyd, multi-genre vocalist, who recently wowed audiences with her sell out ‘Sinatra’ show. In fact, Jemina and Rebecca are childhood best friends and are looking forward to sharing the stage together in style. “We have so much incredible creative talent up here on the Mountain and surrounding areas I am very excited to be putting on a 3rd production . This cast and crew are bringing the script alive and I have no doubt that audiences will be highly entertained,” said Jemina. The Black Opal show dates are Friday nights 13th, 20th, 21st October and Saturday nights 14th, 21st, 28th October. Don’t miss out, tickets are selling fast! To book go to www.theheritage.net.au. The Black Opal is supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund through the Scenic Rim Regional Council.

Businesses Turn Pink
The main street of Canungra is awash with Pink as businesses gear up for the month of cancer awareness and fundraising. Canungra Post Office is turning pink during October with a novel idea! Owner Cheryl Davies has ordered speciality lollies with the Turning Canungra Pink branding and will be selling them throughout October. She will have raspberry lemonade lolly pops, test tubes with pink jelly beans and lindt chocolates with the Turning Canungra Pink logo on them - a great present for visitors (or just a treat for anyone, anytime). All profits will go to Turning Canungra Pink. Canungra Hardware, Canungra Bowls Club and many of the other businesses have decorated their fences and shopfronts in pink, with the Bowls Club going all out inside as well as out! On Saturday 30th September, volunteers decorated the town with pink flags, tutus made by Sam Dusting and pink plastic wrapped around many of the light poles and signs in the town - designed to raise awareness of all types of cancer. The Canungra Chamber of Commerce is offering a year’s free membership to the Chamber as a prize for the best decorated business (valued at $72) and the winner will also receive $500 in advertising from The Canungra Times. The winner will be notified at the end of October by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce.

Council And Commonwealth Continue Bridge Partnership
Council and the Federal Government are set to partner on the replacement of eight ageing timber bridges in Scenic Rim. Mayor Greg Christensen said Council had secured co-funding support in the latest round of the national Bridges Renewal Programme, which provides a Federal contribution of up to 50 per cent of the project cost. The eight bridge replacements co-funded for replacement are: • Ferguson Reserve Bridge – Brookland Rd, Allenview • Back Creek Bridge - Beechmont Rd, Beechmont • Sharp Bridge – Beechmont Rd, Beechmont • Botan Creek Bridge – Beechmont Rd, Beechmont • Josephville Bridge – Josephville Rd, Josephville • Cavell Bridge – Boyland Rd, Boyland • S Todd Bridge – Sandy Creek Rd, Josephville • Brookland Bridge – Undullah Rd, Kagaru “The delivery of these eight new bridges will reduce the number of timber structures currently maintained by Council from 74 to 66 in an overall network of 129, which is a great outcome for the region,” Cr Christensen said. He said Council had received co-funding for three bridge replacements under the previous funding round to renew Tramway Bridge at Christmas Creek, Churchbank Bridge at Mutdapilly and Adams Bridge at Rosevale. “Our long-term Bridges Strategy continues to guide the progressive replacement of the region’s ageing timber bridges with contemporary engineering solutions. When Council implemented its Bridges Strategy in 2011 there were 97 timber bridges in use throughout the region,” he said. “The replacement of these eight bridges, in addition to the improvements already delivered, represents the renewal of almost a third of the region’s timber bridges in the space of eight years. This is an outstanding record of achievement in providing new infrastructure.” Cr Christensen said Sharp Bridge, Botan Creek Bridge, Back Creek Bridge and Ferguson Reserve Bridge had already been programmed for replacement this financial year, while the remaining four bridges would be delivered in 2018-19. He said Council’s continued investment in maintaining and renewing road and bridge infrastructure was vital in driving the region’s economy. “Our transport corridors are crucial to supporting the growth of our economy. The limitations imposed by timber bridges, many of which were constructed more than half a century ago, are effectively roadblocks to economic growth,” he said. “New bridges are free of load limits for heavy vehicles, a key consideration given the significant movement of trucks and farm equipment in our rural areas.”

Canungra Heritage Ruby Opperman
By Joyce Libke Extracts from The Story of Ruby the Timber Hauler published in ‘The Week’, Wednesday 6th June 1934. Every day, Ruby, with a five ton lorry piled high with huge pine logs, negotiates the winding hazardous mountain road which Mr Romeo Lahey has built up the mountains into the Lamington Plateau. Every curve is dangerous. “Have you had any narrow escapes?” She was asked. “Once I had one” she said in a matter of fact tone. “I had broken my arm when cranking the truck and had to wear a wrist band. When putting on the brake I have to put my arm through the steering wheel. Well, one day my arm got stuck on the steering wheel and I couldn’t get it out. The truck was heading straight for the edge of the road with a nasty drop. The wheel would not shift and there was I heading for the edge. But I got out of it somehow.” Ruby is proud of holding the record for a month’s timber hauling for one individual. In this particular month she hauled 58 loads of timber to the mill 120,000 superficial feet of hoop pine In that month she worked seven days a week, sometimes taking three loads a day. Two loads a day is her average. The road is so well graded she takes her load from top to bottom and her empty from bottom to top without changing from top gear. The men load the truck for her but when she reaches the mill she often has to unload the truck herself. “It is really quite simple , when you know how. You just lever’em off. If they won’t shift you put the jack under’em. When you use the jack something must go, and off they roll. It’s as easy as falling off a log.” If you have any information about Canungra’s Heritage, please get in touch with Joyce Libke by phone 5543 5212 or email djlibke@bigpond.com.

On Saturday 21st October, the smell of popcorn and fairy floss will be in the air at the Canungra Country Fair. It will be the biggest event held at Canungra State School in recent years. It has been organised by the school’s P&C to raise funds for a much needed new playground. All the traditional fair fun will be happening with carnival rides, a petting zoo, face painting, class stalls, a book fair and pony rides. There will also be food trucks, Devonshire Tea and a range of market stalls selling hand made goods, bric a brac and more! undertaking and the band of volunteers organising it have been amazing. “We are all very thankful for the amount of community support we’ve received, and to all the local businesses who have sponsored the fair or given donations.” Unlimited ride passes for Carnival rides are available for $25 pre-purchase or $27 at the fair.

Traditionally the school used to hold a much smaller low-key family fun day aimed at just the school families, however it is hoped that this Fair will bring the whole community together and draw in visitors from all around. The fair will start at 1.00pm and wrap up at 6.00pm It’s a day out not to be missed, all are welcome. Check the Canungra Country Fair Facebook page for further details.
Portrait Artist Wows Judges
Award winning portrait artist, Afra Hall-Beers was blown away when she discovered she had won the award for the Most Successful Exhibitor in the Fine Arts Pavilion at the 2017 Canungra Show. Afra entered eight paintings and in fact hurriedly framed a study of her cat “Molly” to qualify for the Monochromatic Class which ended up winning her a first prize. Afra said her feet have hardly touched the ground and the positive feedback has been overwhelming. Since March this year Afra has been passionately painting portraits of animals – some of her pets were represented in the show as well as a number of commissioned paintings. The painting most talked about - which was chosen to be the wearer of the “Most Successful Exhibitor” ribbon - was of German Shepherd “Deejay” who when she was a young dog, rescued a child from drowning. Deejay’s story appears on Afra’s website www.afrasarttractions.com. Afra likes to work on at least three paintings at any time allowing her to move from painting to painting, keeping her eye fresh and the work spontaneous. Most of her works have been in pastel, Afra’s favourite medium, but acrylic is starting to capture her imagination and she’s loving the speed of this medium too. “Living and painting from my beautiful mountain home close to Binna Burra” Afra says “has been the best move for me and the peace and tranquillity of this special area has certainly provided the right environment to artistically capture the heart and soul of special pets and people. I absolutely love what I do now and have some other great creative plans for the future.”

Writers Festival Excursion
On Thursday 7th September a small group of grade 5 students went to the Brisbane writer’s festival. Ocean-Lily, Mia, Dylan, Harry, Tyler, and Jack, met three fantastic authors with interesting insights of their writer’s journey. We met Wendy Orr, Anna Fienberg and Jackie French. Mia introduced Wendy Orr in the first session. Wendy spoke about her newest book, Dragonfly Song. It’s a story of a young orphan girl nicknamed No-Name, who experienced the Bull King’s arena and the terror that it brings. After lunch Anna Feinberg told us about the Tashi series and how she gets her ideas from real life experiences. Before returning to school we met the legendary Jackie French who spoke about the story ‘In History’. She told how most of her books are based on true historic adventures. She was very inspiring and taught us
the message, “always be wary of people who try to make you angry”. We had a great day and we all agreed it was the best day ever! Mia, Ocean-lily
Rugby League Report Nerang Carnival
On Tuesday 22nd August, Canungra fielded two teams in the NRL carnival held at Nerang. We played games against teams from Beaudesert, Miami, Coolangatta and Robina. Our senior team played four games for two wins and two narrow losses to finish third in their division. Our junior team won three out of their four matches, with a one try defeat in their first match the only loss for the day. Consequently, the junior team were the winners of their division, a fine effort! Congratulations to all students on their fine sportsmanship and high standard of play on the day.
Hinterland Trophy
Last Friday, our senior team played for the Hinterland Trophy against teams from St Bernard’s and Tamborine Mountain State Schools in the interschool rugby league competition held on Tamborine Mountain. Each school played the other schools twice in a round robin format. As always, competition was fierce. Canungra’s first game was a hard fought 14 to 4 win against Tamborine

Mountain. This was followed up by two wins against St Bernard’s for a combined margin of 28 points to 4. The final match of the day ended up being the grand final between Canungra and Mount Tamborine. Canungra produced their best performance of the day in winning this final match 26 to 4, an amazing effort after a hard day of football. This is the ninth time, and the seventh in succession, that Canungra State School have won the Hinterland Trophy in the 11 years it has been played. Once again, our team are to be congratulated on their sportsmanship and high standard of play on the day. Well done team!

Birdwatching Travel Diary Pine Creek to Katherine By Melissa Whitby After several days in Darwin, my travelling companion and I headed south to Pine Creek. The bird I was hoping to see around Pine Creek, was a colourful parrot called the Hooded Parrot. Of all the birds I was chasing to photograph on this trip, finding the Hooded Parrot was the easiest. This is due to the fact the birds come into the township of Pine Creek to drink from water points and to feed on the green lawns. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to see the birds and knowing their call makes it even quicker to pinpoint their whereabouts. We camped at the Lazy Lizard Caravan Park in Pine Creek and we easily observed the birds coming to drink at the back of the caravan park. The truly unique thing about the Hooded Parrot is that they are only found in Australia and in a very SMALL area of the Northern Territory. The people of Pine Creek have embraced these colourful visitors to their town and many bird people come from all over the world to Pine Creek to see this stunning bird. From Pine Creek, we headed further south to Katherine. We then headed out to Nitmiluk National Park (known also to many as Katherine Gorge) and stayed in the Park campgrounds, which proved to be a great place to observe birds such as the Great Bowerbird and Northern Rosella. It is well worth doing the short walk up to the lookout overlooking the gorge. There are also options to go on a boat tour if one is inclined. The target bird, which we were keen to see amongst the rocky boulders of the gorge, was the Chesnut-quilled Rock Pigeon. I had seen this bird in the same locality several years before. Unfortunately, this particular bird species eluded us and if we had more time to search for it, there would have been a good chance of seeing it again. We headed back to Katherine and west towards the small township of Timber Creek. The small township of Timber Creek and surroundings areas are known for unique birds such as Gouldian Finches, Yellow-rumped Mannikins and Purple-crowned Fairy-Wren which we were keen to see. Timber Creek was to also produce other interesting wildlife species, which I will write about A male Hooded Parrot next month!!

Shy Snake Makes Effort to Adapt Red-bellied Black Snake - Pseudechis porphyriacus
By Susan Cully Red-bellied Black Snakes are beautiful, shy snakes, up to two metres long. They have a broken range from North East Queensland through to South Australia. They are active night and day. They give birth to five to nineteen live young. These snakes are happy in water but can adapt to drier habitats. A common meal would include fish, tadpoles, frogs, lizards, snakes and mammals. They have been known to seek protection in streams and stay submerged for over 20 minutes. They have been observed employing an unusual technique when hunting underwater: they can deliberately agitate the sediment and flush out the creatures they feed on. The Cane Toad (Bufo marinus/Rhinella marina) is a major threat to this snake. A large gland on the toad’s shoulder is packed with potent cardiac toxins and most species of Australian snakes die after trying to eat the toad. Red-bellied Black Snakes are susceptible to the toxin of the Cane Toad and rapidly die from ingesting or even holding them in their mouths. The toxic Cane Toad has placed evolutionary pressure on snakes to alter their body shape. This snake is adapting or ‘improving’ through a process of natural selection. Research has shown that some snakes have grown longer and that those individuals are better able to survive their toxic meal due to a larger body mass. In addition, larger snakes seem to be developing relatively smaller heads with a smaller mouth, thus limiting the capacity of the snake to ingest a large toad, and therefore reducing the quantity of toxin ingested. The Red-bellied Black snake population is recovering in some areas. All wildlife in Queensland is protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Killing any snake is illegal and unnecessary, as they would prefer to slip away, to lounge and feed in private. Attempts to kill snakes often go wrong and may provoke a dangerous response from them.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough A delightful evening was had by all at our fundraising dinner and all the demanding work of the Guild members paid off to make this a very successful event. There were many winners, from the lucky door ticket to more than twenty raffle prizes. The major prize of two nights’ accommodation, including breakfast at O’Reillys was won by a very excited Mrs. Megan Bennett. Thank you, as always, to all who contributed in so many ways. The people of Canungra are a wonderful and generous community. The next important occasion for St Luke’s will be a special service to be held on Sunday afternoon, October 15th at 4.00pm. This will be a Healing Service open to anyone who is suffering in any way, because of cancer or for any other need. Rev. Valerie will lead the service and you are most welcome to come regardless of whether you are a member of St Luke’s, or whether you normally attend any church. Come if you are affected in anyway or know someone who needs our love and prayers. This special service is to be held as part of Turning Canungra Pink. Everyone will be made welcome. Where is the year going and what is happening? School holidays, warmer weather, the need for rain, the need for world peace and the need for love and support of those suffering because of illness, famine, war, homelessness, or family troubles. All these needs and events make up our daily lives. Do you have time to allow God to help you through each day? It is amazing how he can help if you take the time to ask for his love and to be thankful for what we receive. Remember St Luke’s is open every Saturday morning from 9.00 – 11.00am, so feel free to drop in, stay a while or just take a look.

Remembrance Day Canungra 2017
The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting a Remembrance Day Service in D J Smith Park commencing at 10.30am on the morning of Saturday 11th November 2017. All citizens and guests of the Canungra area are invited to attend the 99th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in 1918. Those attending the service who wish to lay a wreath or floral tribute, are most welcome to do so. At the 11th hour, ‘Last Post’ will be played, one-minute silence observed, followed by the playing of ‘Rouse’. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch is looking forward to seeing you there on this very special occasion.
Looking
for
Bugle Players
Knowing and having the ability to play a bugle makes that person very special. Throughout the year on ceremonial occasions such as ANZAC Day, Vietnam and Veterans Day, and Remembrance Day, the sound of ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’/’Rouse’ adds to the sincerity of the service. A bugle player where ever he or she goes will always be sort after. Over the years Canungra has been blessed with the support from Mr Tim Hunt as our local bugler, however, Tim would appreciate it if someone would assume this role in the near future. If you or someone you may know is interested in supporting not only your local RSL Sub-Branch, but the community in general as our esteemed bugler, please contact me for further details via The Canungra Times.

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby
The launch for Turning Canungra Pink was held at Moriarty Park on Sunday 1st October, followed by Pink Bingo in the evening! Several local community members turned out in pink tutus to join in the races, including local firefighters Cameron Spalding and Dean Meldrum, Canungra Hotel’s Simon Walsh (as Captain America), Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen and Cr Virginia West. Go Ballooning provided tethered balloon rides in their hot pink balloon with all funds going to the Turning Canungra Pink cause. Don’t forget the Pink Trivia on Friday 13th October at Moriarty Park at 6.30pm bring your own drinks, nibbles and raffle ticket money - only $10 for a table of four, or $20 for a table of six. Wear something pink! Many thanks to everyone who turned out in costume and/or tutus to take part in the races on the day - it was a great start to what will be a huge month for Turning Canungra Pink! Getting you to where you want to go‌.. As the last first month of Spring comes to an end and we race rapidly into Summer, the Harcourts Scenic team are busily preparing for the end of year build up as many interstate and intrastate buyers start their relocation plans to move to wonderful South East Queensland—in particular the hinterland area between Brisbane and the Gold Coast which is our service area. With buyer interest levels rising and stock levels low, this is indeed a perfect time for sellers to get their property ready for a good price in the market. However before spending any money on renovations and repairs prior to listing, call us in to guide you as to the best way to get the highest market price. We have great cost effective ideas to add heaps of value for very little expense.
More money in your pocket is always a good thing! $440,000

By Rachel Mathers Paul King was recently presented with the 2017 Club Person of the Year Award. Throughout the season, Paul has continually supported not only his daughter’s team, but his wife Danielle (our Canteen Coordinator) and the committee with anything and everything. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for Paul and we are so thankful for everything he has done this season. Congratulations to Gabbie Wilson and Rod Collins who received the Player’s Player Award for their respective teams in the senior competition. Congratulations also goes to Rhys Bodey and Candice Wright who were both nominated for Player of the Year within their Mid-Week Metro competition – well done! We’d also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the local businesses that have helped improve the Canungra Owls Soccer Club this season.
