Police Taskforce Investigate Cause of Fires
A Queensland Police Taskforce has been established to investigate the cause of fires in Canungra and Beechmont. Sergeant Craig Roberts, Officer in Charge, Canungra Station said there is a current investigation in to the causes of the Canungra area fires as well as other fires around South East Queensland. “These investigations are being conducted by Queensland Police Service Taskforce Overcross,” said Sgt Roberts, “Detectives from the QPS State Crime Command attached to the Taskforce have been conducting investigations into the cause of the fires following information from members of the Canungra area community.” “The investigations are complex in nature and are ongoing. When they are finalised the community will be advised of the outcome,” he said. The fire, which started in Sarabah on Saturday 31st August, gained momentum as fire fighters tried to contain the blaze in severe weather conditions. Crews were called in from around Australia to fight fires in the Scenic Rim and Sunshine Coast. On Friday 6th September, backed by strong winds and high temperatures, the fire raced across Sarabah valley, over Table Top Road properties and through Illinbah valley. Residents described the inferno at the end of Illinbah valley as “like Armageddon”. Ember attacks caused the blaze to jump approximately five kilometres and ignite rainforest near Binna Burra Lodge. Residents were given 10 - 15 minutes to evacuate from their homes, many leaving with only the clothes on their backs and their beloved pets.

Ten homes were destroyed that night, with more badly damaged and the heritage-listed Binna Burra Lodge destroyed by fire. Residents praised the work of the fire fighters and other emergency services personnel, who worked long hours to save homes. After the Fires - Rallying Together
Despite physical and emotional exhaustion, the Canungra community rallied to support those affected by the bushfires. Many residents had lost sleep helping firefighters to save their homes and checking for spot fires on their properties through the night, but still managed to support others. Canungra FoodWorks held a Sausage Sizzle, on Saturday 14th September to raise funds for the local fire fighters. Canungra FoodWorks owners Tony and Anne Nguyen, offered to double the total raised on the day but when the total raised came in at $3,245 they decided to triple it to a whopping $10,000. Of these funds, $5,000 will be allocated to Canungra Rural Fire Brigade and $5,000 to Beechmont Rural Fire Brigade. “We have been a part of the local community for the last 13 years and this fundraiser is one of the many ways for us to show gratitude and be able to contribute back into our local community,” said Tony. “We would like to thank our FoodWorks team, and countless local members of the community volunteering their assistance throughout the day to contribute to the

fundraiser’s success,” he said, “Especially Bren Dalby, Dean Purtill, Will Sayer, the Community Recovery team and many Rural Fire Brigades who came to show their support” he said. Canungra FoodWorks also donated a pallet of bottled water which went to Beechmont residents who had their water supply affected by the fires.
Beaudesert Dental Care
State member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, praised Canungra and Beechmont residents and businesses for supporting each other. “I can’t say how proud I am to represent this area and it’s people,” said Jon, “You have all hung together and supported each other so well. Well done and I know I will keep on working to support our area at this time.”

Volunteers and Businesses Main Support
Volunteers and businesses provided the bulk of the much needed support to fire fighters and residents affected by the fires. A government run Recovery Hub had been established in Canungra prior to the major fires on Beechmont. Beechmont residents Sophie Bryden and Matt Stapleton lobbied to have services also available on Beechmont, stating that Beechmont was the worst hit area in terms of the loss of homes and residents needed to be close to their community. A smaller Recovery Hub was subsequently established at The Old School site on Beechmont. Sophie and Matt have continued to advocate on behalf of residents for clean drinking water and insurance issues. QCWA Beechmountain member Kerry Carmody said the QCWA’s early focus was to support the Rural Fire Brigades by ensuring they were well fed. They were assisted by the wider community, which she described as ‘very humbling’. “We also gave the firefighters the opportunity for social support when they came back from a shift,” said Kerry. QCWA Beechmountain President Leonie Smith said the focus now is long term recovery for people who have lost their homes and

jobs, utilising funds from the QCWA Rural Crisis Fund. “We take a compassionate approach to provide vouchers and money for things that insurance doesn’t cover - such as post office boxes and mail redirection for people who have lost their homes,” said Leonie. Leonie said monetary donations are still needed, but the branch does not have the
capacity to take physical donations such as furniture. Anyone who would like to access help from the fund should email QCWAbeechmountain@gmail.com. Donations of water, non-perishable food and clothing flooded in from around SouthEast Queensland. This was sorted and distributed by a team of volunteers, led by Tamlyn Geiger. Donations were gratefully accepted by people displaced by the fires, most of whom have now returned to their homes. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who donated items and money over this time of crisis in our community,” said Tamlyn, “The recovery process will be long for some people, especially those who have lost their homes, but your support makes it a lot easier.” Many of those displaced went to Canungra Showgrounds, where some stayed for several days. Canungra Showground caretakers, Garry and Vicki Keating, cooked them breakfast and made them feel welcome, sourcing caravans and blankets where needed. Volunteers from Canungra Bowls Club also provided evening meals to those evacuated to the Showgrounds.

Op Shop Helps Bush Fire Affected
Canungra Op Shop launched it’s Bush Fire Appeal on Saturday 7th September. As the crisis started to unfold, many local people wanted to give help in whatever way they could. As a registered charity, the Op Shop was able to accept financial donations. After Op Shop Manager, Caroline Andrew met with local community members and discussed needs in the fire affected areas, it was decided that the Op Shop would also be the drop off point for donations of nonperishable food, personal care items, food, water and household items. That decision ensured that Canungra Showground, which was utilised by emergency services, was not blocked by unnecessary traffic. “The outpouring of generosity from people in the Hinterland, Gold Coast and Brisbane was astonishing,” said Caroline, “A big thank you to the following groups who gathered items to donate: Kool Kidz Childcare, Nerang; Mudgeeraba Rural Fire Brigade; Camp Hill State School; Team Transport, Acacia Ridge; plus other businesses whose details I forgot to record (my apologies for that oversight).” Canungra Op Shop quickly became overwhelmed with the volume of donated items. On Tuesday 10th September, a notification
Donations from Camp Hill State School in Brisbane were gratefully received.
was issued on Facebook asking people to hold off donating any more clothing or linen, and that financial help was more important. In the first two weeks over $7,000 was donated and people affected by the fires were able to quickly access help that they were not able to receive from the State Government, Scenic Rim Regional Council or other charities. “We have been able to give food and fuel cards to struggling families, as well as provide tank water to five families,” said Caroline.
Caroline is in contact with community members from Canungra, Beechmont, Binna Burra, Illinbah, and Sarabah who can gauge through local knowledge who is in need. “In many cases, those who have been worst affected have been too distressed by their loss to be able to work out how to access the help available through Government, local council and the larger charity organisations,” she said, “The Op Shop funds will be made available to affected as their needs arise. Ongoing needs such as water quality and supply are being addressed now.”

Livestock and Wildlife a Long Term Concern
One of the long term effects of the fires is the lack of feed for livestock and wildlife. Where there was some dry feed before, there is nothing but ash. Two separate groups have been working to assist with the ramifications for animals. Stories abound about the notifications to evacuate homes during September’s bushfires, but imagine receiving that notification when you have horses and no way to transport them off your property. A brave group of volunteers evacuated horses from Illinbah, Beechmont and Sarabah during the fires. They responded to people asking for help in posts on Canungra community Facebook pages. At times the group worked through the night to get animals to safety. This same group then set up a facility donations of feed through Canungra Hardware so the evacuated animals, and those left in burned paddocks, could be fed. David, Rebecca and the team at the Hardware have spent hours delivering feed where it was needed most. Wildcare had a team of six Trauma Carers on site at Canungra for nine days, 24 hours a day. They were backed up by a small group of local wildlife carers who helped ensure that there were personnel on site at all times.
Some members of the horse evacuation team with donated livestock and pet food: Lynne Porter, Michelle Scott, Kelly Casey, Rebecca Torrens and Karryn Daniel
Once safe, volunteers also did ‘black walks’ through some of the affected areas, finding and rescuing injured animals. Donations of sheets and towels which were sewn into pouches for wildlife of all types and sizes were greatly appreciated. The need for hay for cattle and other livestock and care for wildlife is ongoing.

Drinking Water and Insurance Major Concerns Drinking
water
Many Beechmont residents are without clean drinking water following recent bushfires and are struggling to deal with the process of having roofs and tanks cleaned. Some contractors are unwilling to travel to the mountain plateau due to the distance and government assistance has been limited to water testing from the Gold Coast Public Health Unit who were contacted by a volunteer on behalf of residents. Beechmont resident Emma Carlsen said she and her husband were evacuated on Friday 6th September, they disconnected their downpipes and sealed their water tank before leaving. However when they returned four days later, the caps and filters from the tanks were on the ground, leaving them unsure of the safety of the tank water. “We haven’t reconnected the downpipes because we haven’t had the roof cleaned and we don’t feel it is safe for us to do it ourselves,” said Emma, “We are also worried about whether anything might have gotten into the tank.” Emma collected water from downpipes after recent rain, but said even after letting it settle for an hour it was not drinkable.
“My husband tried it and it tasted bad, like ash or soot,” she said. A Scenic Rim Regional Council spokesperson said there is no conclusive evidence regarding the quality of water in a rainwater tank after a bushfire. Council has been advised that generally if the tank is not exposed to the outside environment (ie portholes are not open etc) then the water quality should be fine. “We have, however, had rain since the event so if people have not diverted the waterflow from entering the tank from potentially contaminated roofs, they should empty the tank (water can be used for nonpotable reasons ie watering gardens etc). Obviously, if there is any doubt whatsoever the water should be flushed out,” the spokesperson said. “As Council is not a water provider, we do not have water testing facilities. This is outside normal Council business and will be dealt with under the ongoing focus of our disaster recovery program.” Caroline Andrew of Canungra Op Shop said she is working with Sophie Bryden and Matt Stapleton from the Beechmont

community to ensure residents have access to clean drinking water as soon as possible. Free bottled water is still available for residents thanks to generous donations from the wider community. Contact Caroline at Canungra Op Shop for more information on 5543 5533.
Insurance
Beechmont residents should check their insurance renewals and shop around for quotes if their premium has increased following the fires. One resident said her home and contents premium increased by $500 and another was unable to upgrade her car insurance because she ‘lives in a bushfire area’. The Insurance Council of Australia said some insurers may reassess their understanding of an area’s risk following a natural disaster. A spokesperson for the Insurance Council said it is good for customers to research and determine the best policy for their needs, “It’s important to shop around and compare policies for features best suited to individual needs,” she said.
Scenic Rim’s newest Australian citizens with Mayor Greg Christensen
Scenic Rim Welcomes New Citizens
The Scenic Rim welcomed 36 Australian citizens in a ceremony at The Centre, Beaudesert. Mayor Greg Christensen officially welcomed 36 new Australian citizens at a ceremony at The Centre, Beaudesert. Those who pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people, included Canungra’s Nathalie Vandenbranden and Boyland’s Janet Pallister.
Citizenship Day, celebrated each year on 17th September, provides an opportunity for all Australians to take pride in Australia’s democratic values and celebrate the role citizens play in shaping the nation. Having come from Asia, Europe, the United Kingdom, Africa and New Zealand, Australia’s newest citizens have made their homes at various places across the region including Beaudesert, Boonah, Canungra,
Mount Walker, Tamborine Mountain and Tamborine. Cr Christensen said he was thrilled to see the range of ages and backgrounds among the new citizens. The new citizens were treated to an afternoon tea featuring some Australian favourites including lamingtons and Anzac biscuits and each received an Australian native plant.
DEFIB YOUR COMMUNITY FOR LIFE
It’s been an extraordinary few weeks for our region and we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it. It’s times like these that our community spirit shines – strangers become friends; allies become family. Amongst the heart break, uncertainty and fear, life had to continue in a relatively normal, albeit tentative way. On Monday 9th September, we hosted an information night at The Centre in Beaudesert, after the announcement was made that a Customer Service Centre will be opening at 17 William Street. This was a chance for the wider community to hear what Bendigo Bank has to offer businesses, individuals and the community. We hope that our new Customer Service Centre will soon be a new hub for the Beaudesert community. Janine, Vanessa, Natasha and Candice were met by a group of enthusiastic locals who were excited to have such a community minded bank opening. The evening was also a chance to introduce Leanne, who will be working at the Customer Service Centre fulltime. Leanne has over 10 years’ experience with Bendigo Bank and is looking forward to getting to know everyone. As part of an initiative by the Community Bank® branches on the Gold Coast, we are helping save lives by reducing the number of deaths by Sudden Cardiac Arrest, with the installation of 14 defibrillators in the Gold Coast area – with two right here in Canungra. To help further spread the message of the importance of defibs in our community, you have the chance to win a defib for your community organisation, simply by nominating them in a competition. For more information, see our Facebook page! If you have any questions about the Customer Service Centre or our latest Defibrillator promotion, or would simply like to speak to us about any of your banking needs, please come and see us, or give us a call.

Turning Canungra Pink Kicks off with Pink Polo
Canungra’s month of fundraising for cancer kicked off in September with the Gold Cup Pink Polo Day at Elysian Fields. An enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch world class polo in the scenic grounds. Turning Canungra Pink Coordinator, Nicole Krause, said it was a good day for the organisation to launch new merchandise and raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer. “We have a great range of merchandise this year which will be sold from a variety of shops in Canungra,” said Nicole, “As well as the normal pink shirts, we also have a selection of black shirts with pink logos, stubby coolers and caps. The profits from all of these items will go to Turning Canungra Pink.” In 2019, money raised will again be split equally between Cancer Council QLD and Pink Assist - a fund to help local people having treatment for cancer. The signature event for the month, the Pink Dinner, will be held at Canungra Showgrounds on Saturday 26th October. The dinner is part of the Canungra Campout, a weekend of camping and fun held on the Friday and Saturday nights, and the meal itself will be a camp oven feast prepared by Ranger Nick. Canungra Campout organiser, Monique Morcus said people can attend the dinner without camping for the weekend.

“This year we are selling tickets to the Pink Dinner online,” said Monique, “Hopefully it will make it easier for people to prepurchase but we only have a limited amount of tickets so I am expecting it to sell out.” Monique said the idea for the Canungra Campout came from similar events she has attended at Milmerran, but on a smaller scale. “I’m excited to be able to invite people to camp for the weekend and support such a great cause,” she said, “Canungra

By Peter Rice, Secretary Beaudesert Orchid and Foliage Society Beaudesert Orchid and Foliage Society’s 2019 Spring Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants was held at the Canungra School of Arts Hall over the weekend of 7th and 8th September. This show had the potential to be the Society’s most successful of show ever, with the space reserved for exhibition plants crammed with over 145 foliage plants and about 250 orchid plants – and in Spring, some of these orchids are of such size that you would be well pressed putting four to the square metre. The hall was bedecked with plants of all size, shape, texture, colour and the rich and sometimes overpowering redolence emitted by some of our native orchids. Early Spring is generally not a good time for foliage plants as they are just beginning to awaken from their “Winter slumber” but those that were on display were of a high standard. However, this was not to be successful attendance wise. As you would be aware, Canungra was the centre of operations for the emergency services that were required to attempt to control a massive fire outbreak

that was centred initially at Sarabah, about ten kilometres away, and which eventually spread to destroy the historic Binna Burra Lodge on the next range. Because of the ravaging fires, the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Mayor advised all people to stay away from Canungra and many heeded his warning. Whereas we might expect over 750 visitors to each show, we were flat out getting 350, so many orchid and foliage aficionados missed out on our great exhibition impacted by the vagaries of Nature. At 8am on the Saturday, the scheduled starting time, the doors opened wide to welcome a small open day rush, nowhere

Those awaiting the opening of the doors are not interested in the exhibition plants initially, but the sales plants’ area to which they quickly make their way in anticipation of picking up a quality plant at a reasonable price to add to their collections. The Grand Champion Orchid was owned by Karen, Leonard and Emily Kinnish of Mount Tamborine and the Grand Champion Foliage Plant was a magnificent Maidenhair Fern owned by Lyn Calligros of Burleigh. The Society thanked their sponsors, the organisations and people promoted the event, competitors, the volunteers and all those who attended. Their next Show will be held in March 2020.

Bushfire Assistance and Donations
Unfortunately the volunteers working on the ground following the bushfires have found that there are gaps between what is available from government organisations, insurance and what is needed. Canungra and Beechmont communities have set up funds, or linked with reputable agencies, to ensure that money donated helps people in our region affected by the fires. Cash donations are still needed to help people get clean drinking water again, feed livestock, repair fencing and care for wildlife.

Canungra Rural Fire Brigade
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Bravery We sometimes throw words like ‘hero’ or ‘legend’ around lightly. It can apply to a fictional character, a footballer, a celebrity. Over the past month, we have had bushfires in our region the likes of which I have never seen. I was never in the line of fire (literally) and I was frightened. Stories I have heard from friends at Illinbah, Sarabah and Beechmont and photos taken in these areas looked and sounded like the gates of hell themselves had opened up. I can not even imagine what it was like to be fighting fires in these conditions. I received a phone call from one of the firies on the night of Friday 6th September - when I asked how he was he said, “Well, I just saved a house with a garden hose.” He was at the end of the Illinbah valley, when the fire raced over Table Top Road and across to Beechmont. He sounded calm, but underneath that, shaken. Another described going into Binna Burra Lodge as one of the few times as a firefighter he was scared. These guys (be they male or female), whether they are Rural Fire Brigade, QFES or someone who jumped in to save their house or their neighbour’s house; the people who helped neighbours evacuate from Beechmont as fire raced towards their homes; these guys are heroes. They are legends. Thank you is not really enough, but thank you.

The Canungra Rural Fire Brigade would like to thank all of the individuals, community organisations and businesses who supported our brigade, and the many other brigades that came to assist us, during the recent ‘Sarabah’ fire event. It is at times like this that the efforts we make in volunteering to protect our township are rewarded by the gratitude we have received. We are proud to serve such a great community. Once again, thank you. D Rockliff, First Officer, Canungra Rural Fire Brigade
It All Makes a Difference
Dear Editor, Massive thank you to yourself for helping us stay up to date, all the volunteers and staff from all over who came to help, to the local businesses who supported so many and continue to do so, thank you! To everyone who did anything, no matter how small or big, it all makes a difference. Remember, for some it is not over yet and won’t be for a while, look after each other. Thank you!! Kerry
Bright Spot in a Dark Time
The recent fires were so frightening for us all, even if we were not in the middle, our fears for others was always there. The efforts from those fighting the fires and all others assisting with those efforts, demands the highest praise imaginable. Down the track a bit from that, there are wonderful snippets of information about other unsung heroes keeping us safe. The winds were whipping up the fire on Monday 9th which preempted emergency messages on both my mobile and landline. Staff from Centacare who provide me with some aged care services kept ringing me as they had done all weekend to check on my safety and suggested that they call the police to check on me. I assured them I was alright and not to worry the police. About 11pm, I laid on my bed fully clothed and unusually went sound asleep. Next thing I woke up with a torch shining on me and two big strong policemen standing beside my bed. They had been knocking and calling unheard by me. I sat up and calmly said “hello” and we had a good laugh. These guys from Beenleigh Police Station stayed and reassured me and checked on my preparation. They were absolutely wonderful and left me feeling very safe. I wondering if they thought I might be dead as I do sleep with my mouth open...horrible sight!!! Jan Berry

With great pain in my heart, I followed the tragic news of bushfires in Queensland. Canungra, Binna Burra, Sarabah, Illinbah and surrounding places that were all part of this tragedy, are so painful. I shared all these places with my now late and dear friend, Dick Jones. I loved the area so much and I felt completely at home. People who have come to know me always said when I was present, “Welcome home”. And it was home, so dearly. Memories of us going to Binna Burra to have a lunch or a cuppa are in my heart but the place is no longer there. I truly hope there will be nice memories for those who come back after things, hopefully, will be restored. My heart and thoughts are with all who have suffered and I will think of everything all the time, praying and hoping that in time somehow the beauty will come back. Signing off with my love. A V Aut
Time Out for Beechmont Residents
Fires done and fires pending, the stress of the situation unbearable for most. We needed an outlet to destress and to have a chance to be a carefree Aussie for just a few hours, and so the sausage sizzle on Friday 13th and Sunday 15th was born. Whatever the preference, beer in one hand and a sausage in bread in the other; or a bottle of water and a bikky. The community, our local residents banded together to be side by side during this time and catch up with old mates. 18 kg of snags beautifully cooked to perfection within the Headmasters kitchen and polished off, with good old Aussie tunes playing in the back ground. We had full bellies and where in high spirits. We even had the Graces of Mayor Greg Christian sing us a song. We are all beautiful in our own individual way and we all needed to be selfless and caring to one another……..And that’s what we did. Thank you all!! Name withheld, Beechmont resident
Thank You
I wish to acknowledge and thank the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade and the countless other brigades from far and wide (including all of those people who provided logistical support) who have fought the Sarabah bushfire since 30th August. I would also like to sincerely thank the following residents and landowners of Sarabah who provided invaluable physical and moral support to my wife Silvana and I during the fire, especially when it reached catastrophic levels on Friday 6th September and the ensuing days as we fought to contain the further spread of the fire. These people are not members of a fire brigade but stood shoulder to shoulder with our rural fire fighters to help protect properties and prevent the fire from spreading further and more quickly than it did: Derek and Paul Finch, the Luscombe family, Two Bob Roberts, Rion Pearce; and my neighbours, the Bird family, Wayne and Jenny Green, and Debbie Geldard and Rick Chocano, with whom I have shared a number of fire and flood emergencies over the years. It has been both humbling and inspirational to see the way people have banded together and supported each other for the common good throughout this emergency. Thank you one and all! Steve Moriarty
Thank You
On behalf of the Canungra and Beechmont communities I would like to sincerely thank the amazing teams of Emergency Services personnel (QFES, SES and Police) who arrived in town to assist during the recent bushfire event. A number of these teams were from surrounding areas, other parts of Queensland and interstate. We appreciate all that you did to ensure no lives were lost in this event. To our local Rural Fire Brigades of Beechmont and Canungra you are our “local heroes” and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To the Queensland Government Community Recovery Team and other agencies who were located in the Community Hub, we are very grateful for your assistance to affected residents and the time you spent onsite in Canungra and Beechmont, plus we must also thank the Commonwealth Centrelink mobile staff who also assisted the community. To all those people and community, both outside the Scenic Rim and in our local towns, who generously donated goods and services to our area and all the local residents who rallied around instantly to drive stock, provide meals, clothes and household effects and so much more. We live amongst incredibly generous people and I am so proud of our Beechmont and Canungra communities. Cr Virginia West

Librarians Jan Harradine, Raylene Jensen and Jo Hayselden are excited about the new opening hours for Canungra Library
Library Hours Extended
Scenic Rim Regional Council has approved an extension of opening hours for Canungra Library in this year’s budget. Council Librarian, Raylene Jensen, said a survey of library users and residents was conducted to determine the hours which would best suit the community. “We found that Canungra residents overwhelmingly preferred to have the library open six days per week even if it meant earlier closing and closing over lunch, but that at least one day should open later,” said Raylene. The new opening hours at Canungra library will be: Monday 10am - 4:30pm (closed for lunch from 1pm - 2pm) Tuesday 10am - 4:30pm (closed for lunch from 1pm - 2pm) Wednesday 10am - 4:30pm (closed for lunch from 1pm - 2pm) Thursday 10am - 5:30pm (closed for lunch from 1pm - 2pm) Friday 10am - 4:30pm (closed for lunch from 1pm - 2pm) Saturday 9am - 12 noon Sunday Closed These hours will commence on Monday 4th November 2019.

A Different Kind of Scenic Experience
Scenic Horse & Carriage Co has been operating in Canungra for over 12 months and are now taking bookings for weddings, formals and special occasions. The eight seater carriage was designed and imported form Poland by local business women Chris Ward (Corporate and Country Accounting) and Jen Pack (Mountview Alpaca Farm). The stars of Scenic Horse & Carriage Co, Tony and Leo, are both bay Standardbreds, an American horse breed used for harness racing. Tony and Leo are rescue trotters off the track and have been nurtured and trained over the last 12 months for this carriage. Chris and Jen said both horses are rescue horses who had raced previously but have now filled out to a healthy weight and are enjoying their new career together. On Saturday 26th October as part of Turning Canungra Pink, Scenic Horse & Carriage Co will provide carriage rides at Canungra Showgrounds to raise money for cancer and to give everyone a taste of life back in the relaxed horse and carriage era. Come along between 12 noon and 2pm to enjoy a tour around the Showgrounds plus photo opportunities with the horses and carriage during the Canungra Campout weekend. The carriage will soon be operating in Canungra on weekends for tourists and locals to enjoy. Restaurant Review
Sometimes Your ‘Go To’ Is Across the Road By The Full-Bodied Foodie So it seems all my dirty little secrets are coming out in this column, and here’s another one this month. When Canungra Newsagency was open, it was my ‘go to’ when I was stressed - chocolate and coke, that’s my poison. Or it was... Because now, OWL Wholefoods is across the road, so my ‘go to’ when I’m stressed has become organic sultanas from their bulk foods room, behind the cafe area. Or a delicious salad from the cabinet. The focus of the store is organic produce and health foods and owners Linda Stollznow and Donna Purtill are committed to offering these products (which include the exceptional Byron Bay Pies), but the addition of the cafe in recent times has expanded their range and clientele. While they do not have as full a menu as other local cafes, what they have is very good, so if you are looking for a quick snack and a coffee, chai or milkshake, it is well worth dropping in. There is often a freshly made salad in the cabinet and I can also highly recommend both the vegan banana bread (have it toasted
with butter/something that is like butter but vegan if you like) and the Iced Vovo slice which is one of the best things to eat ever. I can’t finish this column without mentioning the coffee again. I have a friend who is pretty fussy about coffee (I’m not) and he was very impressed with his macchiato! They also have Bondi Chai ... which you can
have hot or cold with your favourite milk. Bondi Chair is vegan, gluten free and dairy free and tastes delicious! OWL Wholefoods is located at Shop 1/8 Kidston Street, Canungra. For all enquiries phone 5543 4371 or like their Facebook page.

Funding for Sports Clubs
Two Canungra sporting groups are amongst the recipients of Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Sport and Active Recreation Grants program. Mayor Greg Christensen said projects which supported long-term sustainability within the region were assessed against criteria including increased participation, community benefit and addressing identified needs within Council’s strategic plans. “Not only will this investment lead to physical benefits, it will also foster social connections, improve information sharing, embed a sense of community pride and lead to stronger, more resilient communities,” he said. Projects eligible for Council’s Sports and Active Recreation grants range from facility improvements to field maintenance, equipment, construction materials or leverage funding for larger facility projects. The successful applicants and their projects are: • Hayes Oval Inc - Build a new storage and machinery shed • Tamborine Mountain Scout Group - Establish a new Scout Den • Canungra Area Golf Club Inc - Seed funding to purchase a tractor. • Beaudesert and District Horse and Pony Club Purchase and install two port-a-loo systems. • Boonah Bowls Club Inc - Laser level green, upgrade seating and purchase bowling arms. • Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Install a “Book a Court” system. • Beaudesert Little Athletics - Purchase new starting equipment and scissor mats. • Beaudesert Rugby Union Football Club - Lighting Upgrade. • Kooralbyn Valley Mountain Bike Club - Purchase pipes, fencing, storage container and timber for bike rack.

Funding For Two Bushfire-Affected Tourism Operators
Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen has welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement today of more than $2.68 million of financial support to assist two of the region’s leading tourism operators in their recovery following the recent bushfires. In addition to tourism campaigns, the Queensland Government will provide more than $1.48 million to partner with Binna Burra Lodge to build Australia’s first commercial cliff climbing course, the Via Ferrata, and $1.2 million to partner with the O’Reilly family in a major redevelopment of the Green Mountain camping ground at Lamington National Park. “These are exciting announcements at any time but particularly so in the context of the difficult circumstances of the past few weeks,” Cr Christensen said. Binna Burra Lodge Chairman Steve Noakes said that although the lodge, dining room, kitchen, administration building, library and cabins were totally destroyed in the bushfire, most of the Sky Lodges were undamaged and historic Groom’s Cottage, the Tea House, campsite, pottery shed and barn were unscathed, providing a strong
foundation for the future of Binna Burra with the creation of the Via Ferrata or ‘iron way’. “Since our founding back in 1933, Binna Burra Lodge has always had plenty to get the heart pumping and help people enjoy the great outdoors - from bushwalking to abseiling, flying fox, archery, camping and wild treks,” he said. “As we recover from the devastation of the recent bushfires, we will be bringing into Queensland a new adventure activity that has its origins back many centuries in Europe, where simple protected paths, with ladders and basic protection aids, gave local communities access to the Alps. “As Australia’s first commercial Via Ferrata, we will also provide packages which combine multi-day climbing along with our other outdoor activities that will add to the great range of activities that are good for mind, body and soul.” O’Reilly’s Managing Director Shane O’Reilly said the funding announcement marked the beginning of a new era for the Green Mountain camping ground, allowing more visitors to experience the beauty of Lamington National Park.
The Canungra Times - October 2019
“The new facilities will open up the area to a range of new visitors, not only from interstate and overseas but also for locals and educational groups,” he said. “The addition of permanent tents means people who may never have experienced camping before can give it a go and there will be a few powered sites for RVs which will be welcomed by our grey nomads.” Cr Christensen said that Council executives and officers had been working closely with the Binna Burra Board and staff, and talking at length with O’Reilly’s and other tourism operators throughout the region, to gauge the impact of the bushfires, help identify and address immediate needs and plan a way forward. “While those tourism operations directly in the path of the fires have obviously suffered heavy losses, even those not directly affected by the fire are being affected and are losing customers when they can least afford it,” he said. “We are working hard to promote the message that the region is safe and open for business and encourage people to continue to come to the Scenic Rim,” he said.

Time to Nominate Our Quiet Achievers
Council is calling on Scenic Rim residents to nominate the quiet achievers who are vital threads of the Scenic Rim for an Australia Day Award. The 2020 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards are now open across four categories, highlighting the significant contributions of community groups and citizens of all ages across the region. Mayor Greg Christensen said the awards program is an important opportunity to recognise the many selfless and hardworking community members who make a positive difference in the lives of others throughout the Scenic Rim. “Our Australia Day Awards celebrate community champions and quiet achievers who make the Scenic Rim such a great place to live,” he said. “I believe it’s really important for us, as a community, to recognise those people who play strong roles in defining the best of our character as a region and to shine a spotlight on those who so often work quietly behind the scenes.” “This is one way to say thank you to those whose contribution to our communities throughout 2019 - and often over many years - enriches the Scenic Rim region.”
The 2020 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards will be presented across four categories: • Community Event of the Year Award for the individual, group or organisation which has staged the most outstanding community event in the Scenic Rim region between 30 November 2018 and 30 November 2019. • Citizen of the Year Award, for an exceptional young person who is accomplishing great things in all walks of life and making an outstanding contribution to the Scenic Rim community. Nominees must be between 16 and 30 years of age as at 26 January 2020. • Citizen of the Year Award, for someone who has been an inspirational role model to the Scenic Rim community over a number of years. Nominees must be between 31 and 65 years of age as at 26 January 2020. • Citizen of the Year Award for an inspirational person aged 65 and over, who continues to provide outstanding service to the Scenic Rim community and presents a positive image of ageing. Nominees must be 65 years or older as at 26 January 2020. “I encourage everyone to make the most of this opportunity to nominate a friend,

Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid
Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au
While many manufacturers are concentrating on building fully electric cars, Toyota is taking a different path by expanding and developing their hybrid cars. Toyota has been producing hybrid cars on a large scale longer than any other company and this has given decades more time to refine and develop the tech. The new gen Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid is a decent step up from the previous one and the looks do help make this model. The standard features on the Ascent Sport Hybrid for the most part mirror those on the petrol version. The list includes LED headand tail lights, LED running lights, heated and power door mirrors, an eight-inch touch screen with reversing camera, six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate control and advanced safety tech. The interior has a modern feeling with a large, open designed dashboard and its touchscreen sitting prominently in the centre. While it is modern, there is just so much hard plastic and it is very black which seems strange coming from Toyota who normally offer a more pleasing cabin space.

Cabin storage isn’t bad, with two cupholders up front and two in the back, along with bottle holders in the doors. As for USB ports, there’s a lonely looking one under the dash. Ask the Physio - Shoulder Bursitis
Have you been told you have Bursitis in your shoulder? Shoulder bursitis is inflammation of the bursa in your shoulder. The bursa is a fluidfilled sac which acts as a cushion between a bone and a tendon. You’ve probably had a painful and very stiff shoulder for some time and the ultrasound results have shown this to be the cause. Well it’s not exactly the cause. The bursitis is more likely to be a result of some chronic damage which has occurred in your shoulder over a period of time. Your body creates this ‘cushioning’ to protect your damaged joint surfaces. Shoulders are quite complicated joints and they are affected by systemic issues as well as bio-mechanical and hormonal issues. Therefore it is important for your Physiotherapist to do a thorough examination of your whole shoulder girdle together with your upper back and neck to try to establish where the primary damage has

occurred. Your overall general health might be a contributing factor. So if you are suffering from bursitis of your shoulder, it’s important to consult your GP and then your Physio will do further detective work to try to establish what is the original cause of the problem before being
able to treat it. The treatment will consist of a variety of modalities including laser therapy, massage, ultrasound therapy, joint mobilisations and specific exercises. Unfortunately the progress is usually slow but steady and if it is caught in time then it can prevent the onset of a ‘frozen shoulder’.

Community Groups Share in $93,000
Several Canungra and Beechmont community groups are amongst thirty-eight Scenic Rim groups that will share in more than $93,000 allocated by Scenic Rim Regional Council under Round One of its Community Grants Program for 2019-20. Mayor Greg Christensen said the grants program allowed not-for-profit community groups and organisations to continue to make positive contributions to the region. “This significant financial investment in our communities enhances the quality of life for residents who call our region home,” he said. “Many of these groups bring our communities together through events and activities that celebrate our identity, culture and diversity.” “These funds will contribute to the work of these grassroots groups in strengthening the social fabric of the Scenic Rim.” Groups and their projects to benefit from the first round of Community Grants for the 2019-20 year include: • Canungra Soccer Club for Portable Benches. • Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Inc for Community Christmas Carols (see Moriarty Park News in this edition). • Canungra School Of Arts Inc for upgraded kitchen equipment. • Beechmont Tennis Club for floor tiling of Clubhouse. • Tamborine Pony Club for purchase of sand.

Armistice Day Canungra 2019
Queensland Government Gazette, Extraordinary Publication. From the Premiers Office, Brisbane, 12th November 1918: ‘I have much pleasure in notifying the people of Queensland that I am in receipt of official information to the effect that Germany has signed the Armistice with the Allies, and that consequently the war that has devastated the world for more than four years is now at end.’ This official announcement to the people of Queensland happened the day after the signing of the Armistice; not bad, considering the communication systems available in those times. To remember the sacrifices that so many paid during this horrendous time in our history, a Remembrance Day Service will be held in D J Smith Memorial Park on Monday 11th November 2019 commencing at 10.30am.

When a Loved One Passes By Leigh Thompson, Thompson’s Funerals The truth is no one wants to think about a funeral, let alone plan one. But working things out in advance can ease the stresses you naturally feel. Being prepared does, after all, bring peace of mind. If a death is unexpected or you are not sure if the person has passed away, call 000 immediately and ask for an ambulance. Once the ambulance crew arrives they will either contact the person’s GP or the police.
Colour $135.00 $165.00 $215.00 $380.00
The First Thing
to
Do
If a family member of friend dies and you are arranging their funeral, the first thing to check is the will. The will may contain directions for funeral arrangements. The will by itself is not sufficient to ensure the funeral directions are followed. In some cases, too, a will may not be read until after the funeral. The deceased’s executor is required to arrange the funeral. Where no will exists, the senior next-of-kin will be called on to provide personal details for the deceased within one month of the death. This will allow the death certificate to be registered. According to the law, the executor will take possession and custody of the body from the moment of death until it is buried or cremated. If there is no person willing to take responsibilty, the funeral may be arranged through the appointed government contractor.

Organ Donation
In the case of the deceased wanting to donate their organs, it is important to move quickly. If the death occurs in hospital, staff will check if the person is a registered donor (done via the Australian Organ Donor Register). Consent is always needed before donation can go ahead. If you are considering organ donation it is recommended you discuss it with your next of kin and those close to you so the decision to donate is upheld.

Leighton House was a boarding house established in 1902 in Canungra. In 1934 it was bought and re-erected as recreation rooms at Binna Burra. Image: State Library of Queensland.
Our History - Buildings By Joyce Libke, Canungra & District Historical Society In 1879, the original settlers, Christies and Duncans lived in houses on the top of the ridge on Finch Road (a descendant lives there today). In 1884, when Laheys built their saw mill to harvest the abundant hoop pine in the Canungra Creek and Coomera River valleys, the mill workers lived in tiny huts on the flat near the creek. David Lahey built a house in Kidston Street uphill from the Catholic Church, the pillars that help up the verandah roof are still there, although the house was moved to Brisbane. In 1902, Laheys built a boarding house, Leighton House, to accommodate the mill workers and visitors. It was on the slope behind the present day Council depot. It was used until 1934 when it was sold and re-erected as the recreation room at Binna Burra. As time went by, more families came and cottages were built to accommodate them. On 1st May 1916 Laheys opened up the town with the auction of “107 allotments - 30 with comfortable cottages”. On the lithograph for the sale it shows names on allotments that were already occupied. Several of the cottages are still in Appel, Duncan and Pine Streets. Most have been added to and modernised. Other blocks that were named are: • The store and baker (site of Canungra FoodWorks, built 1982) • Mrs Bonnett’s Shop (Canungra Books and Art) • W H Needham (Canungra Services Club) • D Lawton (Cnr Duncan and Franklin Streets) • Ambulance Station (the two storey house in Appel Street) • Bellissima Guest House (Canungra Hotel, rebuilt in 1938 after a fire in 1937) • In 1937, Harry House built his home with a tiny post office, ice cream and drinks shop (Cafe Metz), then the Post Office building, with the Bank (The Shoe Vault) quickly following.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
BUSH FIRE EVENT IN OUR COMMUNITY What a cruel blow was dealt to our beautiful communities of Beechmont, the upper reaches of the Illinbah and Sarabah valleys and also properties near Canungra township. This was a frightening time for so many residents and we are very grateful that no loss of life occurred. Sadly, a number of Beechmont residents have lost their houses and the already hungry stock have little to no feed on the ground. The magnitude of this event took our communities by surprise, but it is a tribute to all Beechmont and Canungra residents that our community rallied around, donated, delivered and supported those in need. The community spirit and outpouring of generosity has been one to be proud of - we are so lucky to be surrounded by this generous community spirit. The Rural Fire Brigade members of Beechmont and Canungra Brigades did an amazing job and worked tirelessly alongside so many other crews. Their knowledge of the local terrain was invaluable and we thank you all. Recovery is ongoing and each individual affected, will deal with this in their own unique way and in their own time. We need to continue to be mindful of each other through the coming months.
EXTENDED CANUNGRA LIBRARY HOURS This year’s budget allowed for increased opening hours at Canungra Library and a recent survey of library users and residents overwhelmingly preferred the library to be open six-days per week. The new hours will commence in November. They are 10am until 4.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, closing at 5.30pm on Thursday and Saturday will remain 9am until 12pm. The library will be closed daily at 1pm to 2pm, to allow a lunch break for the sole librarian.
NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Nomination forms are now available online, at Council’s Customer Contact Centres and Libraries to recognise that quiet achiever or amazing person who you believe makes a difference to their community. Nominations close on Monday 11th November.
TURNING CANUNGRA PINK This annual event, to raise funds for all cancers and a local assistance fund, has already begun with the Pink Polo in September. A wonderful program of events will run throughout October. Pick up a program and merchandise in local shops.

When I first started seriously learning the art of bird watching in my late teenage years, it was the brown and grey coloured birds that I found the hardest to identify. At the time, I found the only way to truly know birds was to keep being in the field looking at different species and to practice the art of bird watching. Now, years later seating in front of my computer writing this article, I remember the one bird, which truly bamboozled me. The bird in question was the Grey Shrike-Thrush. What this bird does not have in colour, it makes up for with its extraordinary song. Grey Shrike-Thrush are medium sized birds, which are grey in colour. Male birds have black bills and females have pale grey bills. Immature birds looks similar to adult birds with a pale orange eyebrow. These birds are often seen singly or in pairs foraging in trees or on the ground. The range of the Grey Shrike-Thrush extends throughout Australia with several recognised races. A variety of habitats are utilised by this species including rainforest, watercourses, inland scrubs, eucalypt forests, urban parks and gardens. The birds may nest from July to February and will quite happily put their nest in garden baskets placed against human buildings. As mentioned previously, this bird species has an incredible song and is one of the best ways to identify them. Around human environments, the birds can become quite tame and have an interesting habit of looking at themselves in car mirrors for long periods of time. So much so, that I know people at work places that have had to cover their car mirrors to prevent birds from continually calling to chase away their reflection intruder! For anyone struggling to identify this bird, my advice would be to persist. As soon as one becomes familiar with the bird, you will never forget them. All these years later, I see Grey Shrike-Thrush every day and I never cease to amazed by how extraordinary they are, even if they are just grey in colour!

Crow’s Ash (Teak) (Flindersai australis)
Is Your Pet Desexed?
By Susan Cully
Courtesy Canungra Veterinary Surgery web site
These seed pods belong to a common tree found in the paddocks and forests of our district. It is named after Captain Matthew Flinders who first collected a specimen of this plant on his expedition to ‘terra australis’, the southern land. It was harvested extensively by the timber getters. Nan and Hugh Nicholson write in ‘Australian Rainforest Plants II: The durable yellow-brown timber has always been in demand for general building, flooring and even fencing. Its high oil content makes the timber greasy and very inflammable. It is a familiar tree in paddocks recognised by its dark, rounded or oblong crown and is valued for shade. Specimens up to 40m tall are found in the richer volcanic rainforest soils from Northern NSW to Mackay in Queensland. It can be a valuable inclusion in a large garden where it will grow to become a handsome tree with a compact crown. It adapts to most soils, rainforest shade as well as full sun and is tolerant of light frosts. The seed pods are extremely tough, the specimen above has been nibbled, possibly by the nutcracker extraordinaire, a Cockatoo. The tree is easily grown from the papery, winged seed, germinating within 2-4 weeks.
Desexing pets at a young age has both ethical and medical benefits. Early desexing helps prevent unwanted litters (many of which end up being euthanised). Neutering also has important health benefits. Desexing male dogs greatly reduces the incidence of prostatic and testicular disease, as well as reducing aggression and roaming. Desexing females reduces the possibility of life-threatening uterus infections, as well as greatly minimising the risk of mammary (breast) cancer.
When Should I Desex My Pet?
Animals can be surgically desexed anytime form 12 weeks onwards, although we prefer to wait until they are 6 months old.
How
is the
Desexing Carried Out?
We schedule desexings for any weekday. Your pet is admitted for the day, and the fee includes a pre-anaesthetic assessment, pre-medication (including pain-relief and sedation), general anaesthetic, surgery, intravenous fluids, post-surgical antibiotics and pain relief, and removal of sutures. In most cases your pet is discharged later that afternoon. If you have any questions or would like to arrange to have your pet desexed, please get in touch with Canungra Veterinary Surgery on 5543 5622 to make an appointment.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough What a month we have just had! One that has really tested many aspects of our community’s existence. While Canungra made the national news, this was unfortunately to spread the word about the terrible fires in our area. Sadly, fire means loss and risk of life. We can be very thankful there was no human loss but to those in the Sarabah, Beechmont and Binna Burra areas, St Luke’s congregation has been praying for you, along with all the wonderful fire fighters, police, army personnel, community members, and volunteers from so many different places. Thankfully Canungra and district is a community which comes together in times of need. This was made very obvious when St Luke’s volunteers, who helped at the distribution centre set up at the showgrounds, witnessed the generosity of giving by so many people. Let us pray there are no more threatening situations this summer and let us pray for much needed rain to relieve the drought in all areas of Australia. On a happier note we were thrilled to have the baptism of three beautiful children, Bayleigh, Maddisyn and Ellyanah at St Luke’s on 22nd September. Welcome also to their parents, Mark and Kira. I apologise that the Street Stall advertised for Saturday 21st did not take place. We felt with all the generous giving by the community for our fire victims, it would be better to postpone this fundraiser to a later date. I am sure you will understand. It is school holidays again, so enjoy time with your family and be aware of children. They need as much love and guidance as we adults do. If we could all give love to one another our world would be a much better place. I encourage you to pray for all in need.

Moriarty Park News with Bren Dalby Well I would like to congratulate the Moriarty Park Facility for proving its worth in a major way as an evacuation centre and HUB for assistance! This is something we have tried to have made official for three years now but thanks to the tenacity of Keer and the willingness of Scenic Rim Regional Council to move forward rapidly with this program, hopefully we will have more news on that soon. However as this is a community facility and project we would love to receive any feedback from you, as a member of our community, whether negative or positive, constructive or critical; this will be essential to ensure the right moves are made. Please contact Bren (bren.dalby@bigpond.com / 0414 435 919 / 07 5543 5917) or Keer at Canungra Times on 0407 671 286 or news@ canungratimes.com.au. I feel it must be said that I am sure each and every one of us is proud to be a member of this special community. What a magic group of people to know and live alongside.
Helicopters taking off at Moriarty Park
Turning Canungra Pink
Turning Canungra Pink will be getting into swing now, with Pink Bingo tonight – Friday 4th October – if you read this as soon as it comes out! It is on from 6 pm at Moriarty Park Hall. Pink Trivia on Oct 12th at Moriarty Park Hall at 6pm for a 6.30pm kick off; $10 per person this time guys with maximum of six people at a table; lots of prizes and a super raffle. BYO nibblies and drinks, so still a cheap fun night out supporting a great cause.
Community Event
We plan a super community event at D J Smith Park on 30th November, thus bringing the original Christmas Carols date
forward (from 7th December) as a combined massive thank you to our Rural Fire Brigade and SES: our own fabulous Canungra team as well as Beechmont as our friends and neighbours and all the more remote Firies who rushed to our assistance, and without whom I wouldn’t have a house and know I am not alone in saying that. They of course reckon they don’t need thanks but I know the community feels a huge need to be able to show their appreciation and gratitude for an unbelievable performance and we thought what better way than to incorporate the Christmas community get together with this event. Look out for more info and please pop the date in your calender.

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE CANUNGRA TIMES
50% OFF! Any ads for Community Groups and Job Ads
We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs. It also applies to job ads, because we know how important jobs are in this region
Ads from just $22
We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time
Local Biz Priority We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.
We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.
We’re just like you! We are a local small business just like you.
We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region. Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.
That’s how we support you. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community-focussed paper.
