Last days for Masonic Hall

Canungra’s Masonic Hall was demolished during September to make way for a six unit town house development. Developer Andre Bodeson said approximately 80% of the materials from the building will be reused or recycled with locals buying timber, windows and other parts of the building. The Canungra chapter of the Masonic Lodge was amalgamated with the Tamborine chapter in 2011. The Tamborine Masonic Lodge continues to contribute to the Canungra community through a music bursary for Canungra State School which has been in place for over 15 years. Photos: Mark Connop. Garage Sale Trail On Again Study Gives Canungra a Big Tick

On Saturday 22nd October, the National Garage Sale Trail is on around Australia and Canungra is no exception. The Canungra Village Garden Group are hosting a monster garage sale outside the Canungra Hardware. Takings will be donated to the Turning Canungra Pink campaign. The group are accepting donations of quality used items that locals are willing to contribute to this worthy cause. Please call Alex on 0478 784 719 to arrange pick up. Other garage sales in Canungra, Beechmont and Tamborine Mountain have been registered on www.garagesaletrail.com.au. Garage Sale Trail is all about bargains and unique finds. The simple act of buying and selling at a garage sale can do a lot of good beyond discovering a bargain. Australians everywhere are using the day to start thinking more about how our shopping choices shopping impact on our planet. Last year hundreds of thousand of items were sold – that’s a lot of clothes, furniture, music and books that could have ended up in landfill or used up a whole lot of resources to make new ones. To register your garage sale, or find where the sales are in your area, visit www.garagesaletrail. com.au.

As Australia enters the tick season (September – April) Canungra, Gympie and Caboolture areas are amongst a list of postcodes highlighted to Queensland pet owners as hotspots for the potentially deadly paralysis tick, according to a new study carried out by parasitologist Professor Stephen Barker and animal health company MERIAL. MERIAL’s support of this first-of-its-kind Systematic Tick Mapping Study saw Professor Stephen Barker chart postcodes where at least 50 cases of tick paralysis were reported by veterinarians between October 2010 - April 2015 (4.5 years) in order to form a geo-map of cases across the state. The QLD work was part of phase one of the project with the company. Professor Barker comments, “The paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, is a potentially lethal parasite. Although, most postcodes along the eastern seaboard of QLD have paralysis ticks some postcodes in QLD are hotspots for tick paralysis in dogs and cats.” According to the study, Canungra had 450 tick cases, ahead of Gympie (296) and Caboolture (179). Tick paralysis can be present in different ways but more common clinical signs include: vomiting; loss of appetite; lethargy; altered pupil size; changes in breathing sound or pattern; altered ability to move, particularly with the back legs; a change in gum colour; change or loss of voice (bark or meow); coughing; inability to blink in one or both eyes. If these signs are detected it is vital that the pet owner seeks immediate veterinary attention, minimises stress to the animal and removes any ticks that are found as quickly as possible. Removed ticks should be kept for identification purposes.

The installations will form part of the Scenic Rim Story Marker Project which aims to create landmark gateways to a new regional tourist under Council’s Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative. Council is co-funding the public art projects with the support of a $100,000 grant from the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund, an initiative of the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand-Driver Infrastructure (TDDI) program and administered via the Queensland Government’s Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games. Life Saving Device for Canungra Hotel

As part of National Ambulance Week in late September the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) had great pleasure in presenting Simon at The Canungra Hotel with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for use by community members in the event of witnessing a cardiac arrest. The machine is like a Navman and tells the user exactly what to do in three easy steps. In the event of a cardiac arrest it is imperative that a normal heart rhythm is re established and cardiac compression (CPR) commenced immediately, and continues until the paramedics arrive to take over. Simon very generously donated $1400 toward the cost of the machine and the LAC funded $1000 which was raised at last year’s Melbourne Cup Day at the hotel. A real community effort and well done to all who contributed towards this. Canungra even made the Channel 9 Gold Coast News with the town’s commendable effort! Canungra now has four AED machines in town, located at Foodworks, Canungra

Hotel, Canungra Swimming Pool and Canungra Valley Medical Centre. The LAC are always looking for new members, they meet four times per year. If you are interested in joining

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Stretching our wings... After all my talking about buy local in last month’s column, I did the opposite and travelled overseas to Italy, where my grandfather originally came from. As anyone with a small business and too many animals will tell you, this is no mean feat. I started writing this column on my iPhone in a hotel room in Italy, and finished it the day before the paper had to hit the printers. Did I think about work when I was away? Actually, no. Well, not until a few days before we left to come home anyway. I took my two children with me and I have to say it was the trip of a lifetime. We travelled from Rome to Sicily, saw and experienced things I never thought I’d see like 2,000 year old ruins in a little village in Southern Italy, a volcano erupting, street cats in Ortiga (there are always cats in our lives), and so much more. So, I came home to a lot of work, bit of difficulty focussing on the task at hand, a bit of jet lag and the desire to return to Italy. I also came home to the town that is Turning Pink for cancer awareness. A lot of happy people being engaged in the community, working towards a common goal. Then I got Phil Hystek’s article about the National Unicycle Championships and read the last line “And it makes everyone smile” It is good to be home.

Unicyclist Phil Hystek

National Unicycle Championships

The National Unicycle championships were held on 1st and 2nd October on the Sunshine coast. There were various events ranging from trials, road racing through to team events such as Hocky and Basketball. One of the elite events was the Muni (mountain unicycle) race. This is where riders cover a gruelling 10km of mountain bike off road course consisting of climbs, flat and undulating sections as well as serious downhill sections. Local unicyclist Phil Hystek competed in the Muni race and placed second in his class and fourth outright despite suffering some mechanical issues with his unicycle for the last half of the race. Phil was the Canungra Foodworks Sportsperson of the year in 2009 for his two wheel mountain bike exploits but wanted a new challenge so took to one wheel in 2012. “One wheel is way more challenging than two, said Phil, “The concentration required to ride one wheel fast off road is on a completely different level than that required to ride two wheels.” “And it makes everyone smile.”

Well done Charlie F, Olly K, Jarrah M, Dylan A and Jared C on their efforts at the Maths Team Challenge. This was our first attempt in this competition which has some very difficult problems to solve, they even stumped some of the teachers! The students performed well and as a school we have some ideas on how to improve for next year. Thank you Mrs Gosper for accompanying the team.

Talent of The Stars Search

We held our annual Talent of The Stars Search Final on Friday 16th September.

Sarah (3B) for being a mature responsible and hardworking student who always displays a positive attitude to learning and constantly strives to improve her already high standard of work. Well done!.

Tyler (4B) for being an enthusiastic and motivated student in all tasks. He is always polite and respectful, with a positive attitude towards learning.

It is not easy to get up in front of people and perform and our students should be very proud of themselves. The staff dance ‘Ghostbusters” was well received again and an encore performance was delivered. Congratulations to our winners Ocean Lily and Evie, with encouragement awards going to Wolf, Keeley and Hannah.

BDOFS Spring Show Brings Some ‘Foreign Capital’ to Town

By Peter Rice - Show Secretary

Orchid and Foliage enthusiasts were waiting at the doors of the 2016 Spring Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants held at Canungra over the weekend of 10th and 11th September. Althought inclement weather may have led to slightly reduced numbers in terms of the crowd, many similar societies would have rejoiced at getting more than 600 visitors through the doors as Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society Inc did that weekend. More than 600 visitors were met by the Society’s largest ever display of springflowering orchids in majestic bloom, some finding the scent of some of these blooms being a little overpowering. There were 201 orchids, some very large and others most diminutive and needing perusal with the aid of a magnifying glass, that provided a visual feast for the enthusiasts. There were only eighty-three foliage plants on display but this is not unusual in spring as many foliage plants are just beginning to stir from their winter slumber. Grand Champion Orchid was a magnificent Dendrobium speciosum, King Orchid, entered by visiting exhibitor, Ian Brown, from Palm Beach. Grand Champion Foliage Plants was a beautiful Begonia “Autumn Leaves” which Page 14

was entered by our society member, Lee Thorneycroft. Reserve Champion Orchid was a Dendrobium macrophyllum exhibited by Bernie You whilst the Reserve Champion Foliage Plant was an Aglaeonoma “Galaxy”, yet another beauty from Lee Thorneycroft. The Giant Garden Hamper Raffle was won by: • First Prize: Joan New of Moorooka. • Second Prize; of Cornubia • Third Prize: of Mount Tamborine. Lucky Door Prizes: • Coles $50.00 Gift Card: Jacqui Roberts of Mount Tamborine. • Yates’ Gardening Guide: Bob Attwater of Victoriia Point. • Orchid Prize: • Ivy You of Palm Beach. All prizes have been picked up, posted or delivered. Not only did we have some wonderful sponsors but also many newspapers and radio stations gave us a huge amount of free publicity covering much of the area from the south of Brisbane to the border and even beyond. Special thanks must go to all of the media outlets in the Scenic Rim Regional Council area for their continuing support. Many visitors to the show also wandered about Canungra seeing what The Canungra Times October 2016

else this popular township had to offer so it is hoped that businesses benefited by this little bit of extra “foreign capital’. So another most successful Orchid and Foliage Show has come to an end. Many of the magnificent blooms on display are withered but all of the foliage plants are coming into their own so they, with indeterminate numbers of similar plants never before benched are building up to a stage where they will become predominant – hopefully – at the 2017 Autumn Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants in March. Thanks to all and hope to see you at the next show.

This is why it says don’t touch the plants!

AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) In Canungra

For a small town we are very lucky to have four AED machines located in our town for immediate use in the case of a cardiac arrest. They are located at Canungra Hotel, Foodworks, Canungra Pool and Canungra Valley Medical Centre. They are an initiative of the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) and funded with community raised funds. The latest AED was presented to Canungra Hotel on National Ambulance Day - funded by Canungra Hotel and LAC funds raised at the Hotel on Melbourne Cup Day 2015. Congratulations and well done to the LAC committee. In the event of a cardiac arrest it is vital that a normal heart rhythm is reestablished using the AED and cardiac compression (CPR) commenced immediately and continues until the paramedics arrive. If you have questions or want further information let me know and community training or information can easily be arranged with our local Ambulance officers.

Three art works have been selected by the Art Reference Group and the photos are at the Canungra Visitor Information Centre until 14th October. I urge you all to take a look and vote for your preferred choice to assist the Arts Reference Group in their final decision. It aims to to create landmark gateways that tell a local story and connect the Scenic Rim Way tourist trail.

Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus) By Melissa Whitby Visiting the beach in South-east Queensland, is one of the most popular pastimes for many Queenslanders. For someone like myself, I usually visit the beach to see what feathery creatures are present. Friends often ask me about the birdlife which they see in beach environs, wanting to know what that small bird was that they could not get close enough too to get a good look at. One small bird species that is regularly encountered on beaches in South-east Queensland, is the Red-capped Plover. This bird is easily recognised by its colouring and small size. Male Red-capped Plovers have a bright rufous cap, white underparts and black eye-stripes. Female birds have a duller brown cap and brown eye-stripes. Similar species to Red-capped Plovers in South-east Queensland include Doublebanded Plovers and Red-necked Stints. The one features that makes the Red-capped Plover stands out from these other bird species is the rufous/ chestnut head cap. These small birds can be seen singly or in pairs. Usually, they can be observed running along the waters edge foraging for food. As mentioned, Red-capped Plovers are seen in beach environs but will also inhabit tidal mud flats, freshwater wetlands and inland and coastal salt marsh. Redcapped Plovers have a range that extends throughout Australia and are a common resident. These birds can nest at different times of the year in Australia depending on whether they are in the northern or southern section of the country. The nest is a scrape in sand or bare ground and can be lined with shells or plants. Two-three eggs may be laid and Red-capped Plovers may give a distraction display to protect their eggs or chicks. If you are heading to the beach at this time of the year, please be on the lookout for nesting birds as disturbance can cause these birds to abandon their nest or chicks to be separated from their parents. Red-capped Plovers are a bird species, Red Capped Plover which I first identified when I was very young. In my travels around Australia, I have encountered this small bird many times. I sincerely hope Red-capped Plovers continues to thrive and by writing about this small bird, I have made people aware of their existence and how important it is to share the beach with them!

Digaster longmanii. Photo by QM Jeff Wright

Giant Earthworms - Digaster spp By Susan Cully Giant earthworms are found on Tamborine, Beechmont and Lamington plateaux. They are one to two metres long and as thick as a garden hose. Little is known of their biology as they live in deep, permanent burrows and are rarely seen on the surface. The genus name reveals one of its special features ... it possesses two gizzards. Like chickens their gizzards contain (very) tiny stones enabling them to grind their food. Earth and organic matter consumed by worms is deposited on the surface in the form of ‘castings’, improving the organic and nutrient content of the soil. The entrance to a burrow is often surrounded by a rosette of leaves, the burrow itself is deep, often exposed after extraordinary events: excavations, landslips and flooding rain. Burrowing is accomplished when the earthworm contracts and expands along its length within the earth. They have special bristles enabling them to anchor themselves to the wall of the burrow. Descended from aquatic ancestors, they breathe through the skin, without lungs. The skin of an earthworm is thin and must be kept moist. They emerge only at night when the air temperature is low. Light-sensitive tissues near the worm’s head enable it to detect light, so they can avoid venturing out by day. All earthworms are hermaphrodites (that is, a single individual can produce both male and female gametes, the eggs and sperm). Eggs are produced when two earthworms inseminate each other during mating. A ‘cocoon’ containing an egg is deposited in soil. The hatching worms break through the egg membrane and eat the nourishing albumen contained in the cocoon itself.

News from St Luke’s

By Di Ayscough

Last Month I wrote about our Annual Fund Raising Dinner and the great work of Irene Sim who always sells the majority of our raffle tickets. However, Irene has specifically requested that I thank you, the people who purchase the tickets. Irene emphasised just how kind and generous you all are when it comes to buying not just one ticket but multiples of tickets. How often do we part with our money only to receive a small ticket in return and generally never expecting to receive that phone call to say you have won. In other words, you give a donation. I know I never expect to win anything but if I see it as worthwhile then I am happy to provide to that cause. The winner of the major prize, two nights’ accommodation with breakfast, at O’Reillys, was Megan Bennett. Megan was ecstatic to win such a wonderful prize. Do you ever feel like you never win anything? In actual fact we are all winners. While we may not win a raffle or a competition we are winners if we have a family to love, a home to go to, a bed to sleep in and the ability to buy food and enjoy where we live. Yes, we only need to look at the positives of life here in Canungra to know how lucky we are. St Luke’s raised more than $1500-00 through our annual dinner and the associated raffles, so thank you to you, the community, who have been so generous in your support of St Luke’s. We appreciate your strong support and the funds will be used for the ongoing upkeep of the building.

Moriarty Park News Sportsperson of the Month

Kelly Street The Canungra Bowls Club is proud and delighted to nominate Kelly Street as Sports Person of the Year for 2016. The Club was fortunate this year to have enough lady bowlers to hold their annual Ladies Singles, Ladies Pairs and Ladies Fours events. This year Kelly Street won all three events, a feat never achieved by any Club member in its 63 year history.

Kelly has been an integral part of the success of the club over many years, contributing not only as a member but also a sponsor along with her family, in providing financial support for a number of important club events. Kelly has filled the role of Ladies Games Director this year with great esteem, and is a well respect member of the Canungra Bowls Club. Her dedication to helping where she can with the added role as a mother looking after her young family of three is deserving of recognition. The Canungra Bowls Club congratulates Kelly on her incredible achievement this year and is a great asset to our bowling club community.

Morgan Lee - a True Champion!

It was an action packed school holiday for local girl Morgan Lee. Morgan travelled to Darwin to compete in the Australian School Swimming Championships held from 15th to 21st September 2016. Morgan was a representative on the Queensland School Swimming Team competing in Girls 16-19 Multi Class events. She was very successful with a gold medal in the 4 x 50 metre Freestyle Relay, a silver medal in the 4 x 50 metre Medley Relay (swimming freestyle leg), and four personal best times in 50 metre Backstroke, 50 metre Breastroke, 50 metre and 100 metre Freestyle. She set Australian Swimming records for S7 classification in the 50 metre Breastroke and 100 metre Freestyle. Morgan has now returned to continue her swimming training with her next major goal being the Queensland Long Course Championships in December. In order for Morgan to make the journey to Darwin there are many people the Lee family would like to thank. Particularly the Canungra Op Shop for their support, Rackley Swimming for donating a family pass as a prize for the raffle that was run, and to the many people, both local and out of town, that purchased a ticket in the raffle, the proceeds of which helped to finance Morgan’s trip to Darwin for the Championships.
