Ponies, Puppets and Puppies - 2019 Show

The 2019 Canungra Show was again an equestrian spectacular with quality horse entries in all rings. The small country show attracted horse and cattle entries from across South-East Queensland, and while numbers in classes were affected by drought conditions, Secretary Sharon Rafferty said the Committee was very happy with the quality of entries in all sections. “We are fortunate to have entrants who have represented the South East Chamber at the EKKA in the Ute competition as well as an EKKA winner in the Pavilion cookery section,” said Sharon. “Our Woodchop competition was also very competitive, with local resident and former Queensland State Champion, James Geiger competing as well as a host of top Axemen from around Australia.” “The quality of all of our competitions is very high and as a small country show, we can be very proud of what we showcase for our region,” she said. A new Award was given in the Fine and Creative Arts Hall at Moriarty Park. Chief Steward, Kerry St Clair, introduced a ‘People’s Choice Award’ which was generously sponsored by Holli Dolli and attracted over 180 votes. The winner was Mechanical Bird by Bevan Eggert with Emily Marazes a close runner-up with her sketch of a girl with a hair plait. “Bevan and Emily stood out far above in the People’s Choice Award and were very close in votes,” said Kerry, “Emily is only in primary school and I think it is worth noting her success overall.”

Canungra AH&I Society President, Roly Ethell, thanked the sponsors and volunteers who made the event possible. “Our events are run almost entirely by volunteers and without them and our sponsors there would be no show and no rodeo,” said Roly. “We appreciate the efforts of everyone who helped make this year’s show a success and would love to have more people involved,” he said.

Local resident, Linda Ashton took out the prestigious Vera Henry Memorial Rich Fruit Cake Award at this year’s EKKA. This was the culmination of several very successful years of competition. In 2017 she won the Rich Dark Fruit Cake at Royal Toowoomba Show and in 2018 she won first prize for the Boiled Fruit Cake at the Gold Coast Show. In addition to the EKKA prize this year, Linda won the Dark Rich Fruit Cake class at the 2019 Canungra Show, which qualifies her to compete in the Queensland Shows’ South East Sub Chamber Finals. Linda learned to cook on a combustion stove on her family’s property ‘Corringal’, in Braidwood, New South Wales. She attended Baulkham Hills Catering College and later obtained a Bachelor of Teaching Degree from Griffith University. During her studies she worked at COTAH, a prestigious catering college in Brisbane, where her mentor was Margaret Wingett. She taught food related courses at TAFE and cooking skills and related subjects to Apprentice Chefs and Child Care Teachers and Home Economics to Year 11 and 12 students.

When she retired, Linda had time to concentrate on her own cooking skills again. She volunteers her time and experience to the Canungra Show, Canungra Uniting Church and Turning Canungra Pink. She also became a show cooking judge and this year is the second year she joined the judging team for the EKKA. She abstained from judging on the day her fruit cake was entered as no competitors are to be present

when judging is underway. She joined the judging team again on the Wednesday and said she truly enjoyed the experience. “I will continue to judge as it is a great passion of mine,” said Linda, “I intend to keep entering my cooking to keep up my skills.” I enjoy living in Canungra as the community have been very warm and welcoming to my husband Ray and I,” she said.

Canungra’s Bank to Expand

The Canungra & Districts Financial Group Limited are set to expand into Beaudesert with a new Bendigo Bank Customer Service Centre in the planning stages. Canungra & District Community Bank® Company Chair, Janine Rockliff, said the board had finalised negotiations with Raine & Horne Real Estate in Beaudesert for the new Customer Service Centre, and was looking forward to sharing their premises. “After discussions over the last few months, we are happy to announce we have found our home and will share Raine & Horne’s premises at 17 William Street in Beaudesert.,” Ms Rockliff said. “We believe this location will provide convenient access for Beaudesert residents, business owners and community groups to access our quality banking products and services. “We hope our new Customer Service Centre will soon become an important commercial hub for the Beaudesert community. “The new Beaudesert Customer Service Centre would offer a full-suite of banking services, and profits from these products would be reinvested back into the local community,” she said. Hope Floats - Holli’s Drive for Water

A Facebook post alerting people to extremely low water levels in nearby towns prompted Holli Souvannavong start collecting water donations from her clothing boutique, Holli Dolli. After reading a post on the ‘Water for the West’ Facebook page, Holli began ‘Hope Floats’, a drive for donated drinking water which will be donated to Applethorpe and Stanthorpe. These towns, located less than three hours west of Canungra, have hit critical water levels. “Most of us are aware of the drought and the crisis our farmers are facing,” said Holli, “What I’m unsure of is if we are all aware of just how dire things really are. Only hours away from us are Aussies without drinking water.” Holli said she had heard of families who were sacrificing showers and clean dishes to have clean drinking water for themselves and their stock, potentially affecting hygiene and the health of families. “I know I cannot change the world but I wanted to make a difference,” she said. Holli’s goal at first was to fill her horse float and car with bottled water, but with donation points at Holli Dolli, Canungra;

BP Canungra was officially opened by Mayor Greg Christensen on Wednesday 14th August. The service station has been trading since Easter this year, and is the first new commercial property built in Canungra for 20 years. Owned and operated by the Covino family, who have owned The Outpost Cafe for the past 14 years, BP Canungra employs local people, as well as selling sandwiches, pies and from The Outpost Cafe. Andrew Covino said it felt like the family had come full circle as his parents, Frank and Filomena, owned Golden Fleece service stations in Victoria in the 1960s. Speaking at the opening, Andrew thanked expressed his thanks to his wife Caroline and Michael’s wife Kristy, for their patience while the brothers managed the project through to completion. “We know with young families it has required a lot of patience and we are very grateful for your support.” He also thanked the customers who supported The Outpost Cafe for the past 14 years and who provided the inspiration for the project.

40th Annual Ladies Service By Robyn Lee On Friday 2nd August 2019 the Canungra Uniting Church held their 40th Annual Ladies Service. With plenty of singing the service began followed by a brief history of the service, the first of which was held as part of Canungra’s Centenary celebrations. The guest speaker for the day was James Kozina who is a Church Engagement manager for Open Doors Australia. This organisation was established in 1955 when Brother Andrew, a newly committed Christian, began smuggling Bibles into Eastern Europe. Since then Open Doors has expanded to work in over 70 countries, providing Bibles, training and practical support. James had a great presentation showing real people, and telling real stories about the great work of Open Doors Australia in different parts of the world. After the service a delicious lunch was enjoyed by everybody, and provided an opportunity for everyone to mingle. An announcement was made that as a thank you to Pam Moriarty, for her tireless efforts organising the annual Ladies Services, her favourite flowers would be planted in the front garden of the Uniting Church.

Planning As much as it may not seem like it sometimes, I’m a planner. I plan stuff and I do it, preferably in exactly the way I have planned to do it! So there is good and bad in that. Good, in that I am motivated and have purpose, bad, in that if the plans are interrupted or have to change, it can be very stressful. It is also very frustrating to see things that needs to be planned for, not being planned. While I generally steer clear of controversial Council or political comment in this paper, I am increasingly frustrated with the apparent lack of town planning for Canungra. It is all very well for Council and the State Government to plan on population increases, but when the main street is congested and there is no plan in the foreseeable future to alleviate this, how can we continue to plan for population increases? I can not tell you the frustration I feel seeing Council’s emphasis on events like Eat Local Week (which is a good initiative) amongst others, when the basics like town planning - are not addressed. Saying it is a State Government matter is simply not good enough. Beaudesert had a fatality and a serious accident where a truck crashed through the front of a main street business before their bypass went ahead. Is that what it is going to take before Canungra’s traffic woes are addressed? Both Council and the State Government need to take action on this now.

Is There Still Room for a Bypass?

Canungra is poised for continued growth following Scenic Rim Regional Council’s approval of 117 residential blocks. The Canungra Rise estate is to be developed over three stages in the town’s residential precinct, with blocks ranging in size from 600m2 to 1.33 hectares, following approval of the proposal at an Ordinary Meeting of Council last month. Council’s approval of the development, off the Beaudesert-Nerang Road north of Benobble Bridge, takes into account advice from the Department of Transport and Main Roads that a corridor which was to have been preserved for the proposed Canungra Bypass is no longer required. However, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has identified an alternative route for a future town bypass, which has also been earmarked for development. If a bypass was to go ahead in the future, the land would need to be resumed by the State Government. Both Division 3 Councillor Virginia West and Division 2 Councillor Nadia O’Carroll agreed that the original road corridor which had been identified as a Canungra town bypass option, was now not available

following the decision by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. In their opinion this route had provided a more cost effective solution than the current route proposed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, said it is plain to see that sometimes the amount of traffic makes it very difficult to cross the road, turn into or off Christie Street, various shops or Canungra State School and there has been discussion about a potential Canungra bypass road to alleviate traffic pressure in town. “Despite repeated lobbying by myself, Cr Virginia West and Council itself, Traffic and Main Roads has not advanced this idea,” said Jon. “Unfortunately, the position of Main Roads will make it even more difficult to provide a better route through Canungra in the future, as development occurs around the corridor where any new road would go. In fact, Main Roads has indicated that installation of traffic lights would likely be undertaken prior to a town bypass being considered necessary,” he said. “The town planning and development system in Queensland that has allowed this

to happen is part of the problem. There is no link between developments and funding (or even planning) for roads and infrastructure that will be needed for the future.” “In addition, despite my request earlier this year, the State is not placing conditions on developments that are proceeding now to guarantee the bypass corridor,” said Jon. “I thank residents and Cr West for their support in lobbying for better roads for Canungra and will continue to raise these issues with the Government,” said Jon. Jon also said the Town Entry Treatment (designed to slow traffic entering the township) announced early in 2019 by Main Roads has not yet been funded. “I have he pointed out to the Government repeatedly that Canungra’s traffic situation is getting continually busier, and have now requested a clear timeframe for when a TET will be undertaken – we should be among the first,” he said. A statement from Scenic Rim Regional Council said Council will continue to work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to ensure that a Canungra bypass is included in future State Government infrastructure plans.

Music and You has commenced its weekly Early Childhood Music Group this term in Canungra, at the Uniting Church Hall on Wednesday mornings. For 0-5 year olds and their parents or carers, participants experience live, interactive, fun classes. Turning Canungra Pink

Turning Canungra Pink is ramping up for 2019 with a host of vibrant events for locals and tourists to enjoy. This event, which raises funds and awareness for all types of cancer, was started in 2011 by local business owner Di Crooks, herself a breast cancer survivor. In 2013 the Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved, creating a fundraising event that lasted throughout October and involved most of the businesses and residents. In 2017 and 2018, Turning Canungra Pink successfully raised over $40,000 per year - a great effort for an event run entirely by volunteers in a town with a population of 1500. Funds raised from events held in 2019 will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland (50%) and Pink Assist (50%), a local fund that provides practical support to local people who are being treated for cancer. Pink Assist was established in 2017 and has helped a number of Canungra residents through their cancer journey over the past two years. One of the feature events this year will be the Canungra Campout, which will incorporate the Pink Dinner on 26th October. The Canungra Campout will run from Friday 25th to 27th October at the Canungra Sports and Recreation Grounds (Canungra Showground). Campers will enjoy a weekend of camping and entertainment on Saturday, all in a beautiful setting. Tickets include two nights of camping, camp oven cooking demonstrations, music and bush poetry, with Pink Dinner tickets sold separately. Day entry is available by donation on the day. Spotlight On Topical Issue

A local theatre production shines a spotlight on digital addiction will be supported by Scenic Rim Regional Council. Council approved an allocation of $7,500 for Goat Track Theatre Company’s production of The Changelings as part of the second round of the Regional Arts Development Fund. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the project aimed to involve young people in creating a stage play that re-imagined changeling myths to explore the very topical issue of online addiction. “The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between Council and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and supports projects that offer professional arts, cultural and heritage opportunities to local communities,” he said. “In recommending support for The Changelings, the Scenic Rim Arts Reference Group considered the project’s merit and Goat Track Theatre Company’s record in staging innovative productions for the Scenic Rim community.” Arts Reference Group Chair Cr Nadia O’Carroll said that funding would assist the Goat Track Theatre Company in meeting some of the production costs of sets, costumes and design elements for the production. “Goat Track Theatre Company not only produces fine cultural works but also engages and involves young people of our community, both as participants and audience members, in exploring contemporary issues,” she said. Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government was proud to continue its RADF partnership with local governments with an investment of $2.08 million, through Arts Queensland, for the 2019-20 fund.

Totally Spoilt for Choice! Observe The Moon Night By The Full-Bodied Foodie

International Observer the Moon Night (InOMN) is an annual worldwide event to encourage people to look up and take notice of the Moon. Tamborine Village Lions and the Southern Astronomical Society will host an event as part of InOMN at ‘Woodstock’ Youth Enterprisers Trust, 231 Plunkett Road, Tamborine, on Saturday 5th October from 6pm to 9pm. Southern Astronomical Society members will have a variety of large telescopes on site to enable members of the public to see the moon and other astronomical wonders. It will be Southern Astronomical Society (South East Queensland) Treasurer Bryan Pott’s seventh year of organising this event for the community. The Society was formed in 1986 to promote Amateur Astronomy and actively encourages Observational Astronomy, Astrophotography, Telescope and Observatory Construction. A gold coin donation is appreciated and the Lions will hold a sausage sizzle. All proceeds from the sausage sizzle will go towards Lions projects. Canungra’s cafe culture is alive and well, with tourists flooding in every day to enjoy the county atmosphere and hospitality our little town offers. But where to go? I twisted my own arm this month to try two of the cafes in town - and I’ll get to some more next month! The youngest Possum and I enjoyed breakfast at Canungra Hub. The outdoor eating area is lovely, with fresh herbs growing in the gardens, and despite the main street being busy, it creates a relaxed atmosphere. We picked a day when the original Possum was working, so of course the service was exceptional! Youngest Possum enjoyed her Omelette and my Morning Start (poached eggs on toast with avo and feta) was delicious. One of the things I like best about Canungra Hub is the owners, Shona and Paul Kraayvanger (so that should be two things). Shona and Paul have been around Canungra for a while and they have a knack for making people feel welcome. So going to Canungra Hub always feels like stopping in for a coffee with friends. After very few visits the staff remember your name and welcome you with a smile. Part of the country hospitality that Paul and Shona do so well. Canungra Hub is located at 28 Christie Street, Canungra. Phone 5677 6684. I would like to point out that I did not do these reviews on the same day. Definitely had a few days off before heading to Cafe Metz for lunch. I also have to say that I am actually quite familiar with Cafe Metz’s breakfast menu, and it is a cracker. However, it being lunchtime and me craving a burger, I went for the Morocan Chicken Burger and it was the best thing I’d eaten since breakfast! Cafe Metz always seems to be busy but the staff are friendly and the meals come out quickly, so there isn’t much of a wait time. Cafe Metz is located at 37 Christie Street. Phone 5543 4322. Really, one of the advantages of having so many tourists visit Canungra is that it enables the town to sustain good quality cafes like these. Both cafes are open seven days for breakfast, lunch, coffee and snacks. We really are spoilt for choice!

School Happenings QSS State Track and Field Championships

Two students qualified for the State Championships which were held Thursday and Friday 15th and 16th August in Brisbane. The top three students in field events go through to State.

Lily placed first in high jump with a jump of 1.22m (pb). She jumped 1:18 at the Canungra State School carnival and 1:19 at Districts. Jack placed second in long jump with a jump of 4.63m (pb). He jumped 3.96m at the Canungra State School carnival and 4.13m at Districts. Remarkable increases in their personal best for both students.

South Coast Region Athletics Trials Eleven students competed at the South Coast Region Athletics Trials. The Canungra athletes continued with the success of districts at regionals. Full results are not yet available, however the following results have been released: Lochie – 9th Discus, Courtney – 9th 800m, Oli 7th high jump, William – 9th 200m. Taj, Mia-Rose, Kyson, Cooper and Dusty placed further down the list (we are still waiting for their results) Well done to all. It is a big step up at regionals from districts.

Promoting Healing through Nutrition

Morgane Dean grew up in France and moved to Australia in 2009. She has always been passionate about food, health and the human body. A qualified Remedial Massage Therapist and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, she and opened her M D Healing clinic in 2016, based on Beechmont with a mobile service available by appointment. It seems the days of manufacturers spending billions of dollars developing fast, reliable, fuel efficient and even fun engines and cars are dwindling away. But wouldn’t it be great if electric cars had the same range as petrol? Well, believe it or not, that day could be here, as Hyundai’s Kona Electric can manage up to 449km between plug-ins. It’s all down to a whopping 64kWh battery. Let’s jump straight to the go fast bits, and it is a lot more surprising than I imagined. No engine here at all; pure electric. The Kona Electric has an electric motor and a single-speed transmission. The motor makes 150kW of power and 395Nm of torque. The Kona EV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds which is impressive. Officially, the combined electric driving efficiency is 131 Wh/km (watts x hours / km); I will let you do the math on that. Charging from empty to 80 per cent takes nine hours and 35 minutes when using the 7.2kW on-board charger and a home wall unit which needs to be purchased separately. If using a public filling station it can be done in around 75 minutes.

Driving a Kona Electric for the first time is something I will remember well. It’s nothing like anything I have driven before and is completely different to a petrol Kona. The instant torque of an electric engine makes for rapid acceleration anytime at any speed, whether you’re pulling away from the traffic lights or overtaking on a highway. The interior is very Kona. The floor space is different, so they made use of it with extra shelves and pockets. This two-phase service commenced at D J Smith Memorial Park. Phase one brought all who gathered up to date with the upgrade of the park and ideas for recognition of conflicts after World War Two. Phase two remembered those we had joined with, trained with, deployed with, but did not come home with. The gathering also remembered those who died or were seriously injured during training activities prior to deployment. Notably, there was strong feelings of condolence and support to the families who suffered the loss and/or injury to family members and mates.

Tamborine Mountain Tennis Club now has a speed radar camera but at their Open Day on Sunday 8th September, they won’t be giving you a speeding ticket, they’ll be measuring how fast you can serve a tennis ball. The speed will instantly appear on a large electronic display similar to the ones used at major sporting events such as the Australian Open. There will be prizes for the fastest serve in all categories. To test the speed of your serve or simply watch, come along to the Tennis Club Open Day at 88 Beacon Road, Tamborine Mountain on Sunday 8th September from 10am to 1pm. The courts will be open for everyone to have a hit of tennis and there will be a free barbecue provided.

Scenic Rim residents and business operators have an opportunity for a final say on the region’s first integrated planning scheme. At its Ordinary Meeting in August, Council endorsed the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme and Planning Scheme Policies Public Consultation Report, which were developed following consideration of 559 submissions received in 2018, and endorsed a second round of public consultation, limited to changes made to the 2018 draft, to run for 24 business days from 28th August 2019. Mayor Greg Christensen said the new Planning Scheme represented an important milestone in the region’s 11-year journey following the establishment of Scenic Rim Regional Council in 2008. “The new planning scheme will replace the existing planning schemes of the former Beaudesert Shire, Boonah Shire and Ipswich City Council areas within the Scenic Rim local government area,” he said. “Guided by the Scenic Rim Community Plan, it will underpin development aligned with the community’s shared vision for our region for the next 20 years. “It aims to provide certainty to Scenic Rim residents, landowners and investors by identifying land use intent for particular areas and informs Council’s plans for infrastructure to support growth and balance the social and economic development of the region to protect and enhance our region’s lifestyle and the natural assets valued by the community.” The new planning scheme has been developed in the context of the State Government’s Planning Act 2016 as well as the Shaping SEQ South East Queensland Regional Plan 2017 and the State Planning Policy. Cr Christensen urged the community to provide feedback on changes made to the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme following community consultation in 2018. “Council is grateful for input from the community through the 559 submissions which helped to frame the amendments to the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme,” he said. “This final round of community consultation, which will run until Monday 30th September, is a valuable opportunity to help shape the future of our region and I encourage everyone to have their say.” The second round of public consultation commenced on Wednesday 28th August and will conclude at 4.30pm on Monday 30 September 2019. All previous submitters will receive written notification of how Council has responded to their submission along with an Information Sheet on how to access the Consultation Report for their individual response and how to participate in the second round of consultation. Our History - Street Names By Joyce Libke, Canungra & District Historical Society On 1st May 1916, Lahey brothers opened up the town area of Canungra by putting 700 house blocks (30 with cottages on them) up for auction. As the owners of the sawmill, that had been operating in the area since 1884, they realised that the time had come to let the town develop. They had set out the town area, with most of the roads named after prominent members of the District. All that town development is still relevant today. • Christie Street - Robert Christie was the original owner of the land between the Street and Canungra Creek to the north. Laheys leased this land for their mill site. • Kidston Street - William Kidston was the Premier of Queensland in 1910 when Laheys invited him to Canungra to get his support for the rail line from Logan Village to Canungra. • Appel Street - John Appel was the Member for Albert in the Queensland Parliament and was also in support of the rail link. • Finch Road - Named for Amos Finch. This is the road to the Finch property on the foothills of south Tamborine Mountain where the family lived. • Duncan Street - John Duncan (son-in-law of Robert Christie). This street was the tramway line to the tunnel into the Coomera Valley to harvest the hoop pine there. • Strachan Street - Thomas Strachan was Chairman of Tamborine Shire Council. • Franklin Street - Edwin Franklin was a long time Councillor (Chairman (1917 - 1935) • Lawton Lane - The lane to the Lawton property on the corner of Duncan Street and Franklin Lane. • Coburg Road - Canungra Creek was marked on Hugh Mahony’s hand drawn map 1862 as the Coburn River. Mahony named his property at Wonglepong ‘Coburn’. During WWI it was changed to ‘Coburg’ though the creek remained as Canungra Creek. As developments have grown around the town, streets names have been selected by the developers. At Canungra Rise, Richard Roxborough and Alfred Beasley were involved in the cedar trade to England by Hugh Mahony in 1866.

New Service Station In Canungra

The Covino family proudly hosted the official opening recently of their new BP Service Station which is a perfect adjunct to The Outpost Cafe that they have owned and operated for the last 14 years. The architectural design of the new building includes a bull-nosed verandah and higher pitched roofing more in keeping with a regional town. Sadly, Frank Covino passed away recently and our thoughts are with the Covino Family.

Submissions For Upcoming Lgaq Conference

Council has endorsed four motions to be considered at the upcoming annual LGAQ Conference in October - the frequency of land valuations, eligibility for Works for Queensland, the calculation model for Financial Assistance Grants and the loss of infrastructure charges in State Development Areas. All these aspects have significant financial implications for Scenic Rim Council.

Further Work On Lamington National Park Rd

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised the community that it will be undertaking further reconstruction work on this road following the extensive damage from the Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie event of 2017. These works will re-instate the preexisting 5.5-metre section where the traffic lights and passing bay have been. Most of the work will take place at night and residents on this road will be kept informed of any closures.

Future Canungra Town Bypass Route

I can assure all residents that the bypass route identified by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in the Canungra Local Area Study some years ago has not changed. The original road corridor initially identified as a Canungra town bypass option, and which I believe would have provided a more cost-effective solution than the current route proposed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, is now not available. Council will continue to work with DTMR to keep this project in their future infrastructure sights for South East Queensland.

Pink Robin (Petroica rodinogaster) By Melissa Whitby Australia is home to an astounding array of bird life. Over the last 20 years, I have been lucky enough to have trav-

elled all over Australia observing this stunning bird life. However, the southern states I have only started exploring in the last few years. One bird, which I only spent a short time with back in 2015, I managed to get excellent views of earlier this year. The bird that I write about is the Pink Robin. Male birds of this species are easily recognised by their pastel-pink breast and sooty grey-black upper parts. Female birds are dark brown in colour with no white on the outer edges of the tail. Similar species to the Pink Robin is the Rose Robin. However, male Rose Robin have a pink chest that does not extend as far as the Pink Robin and female birds have white tail edges. Pink Robins are usually observed in pairs or singly. They can be seen in a variety of habitats including dense, dark tree fern gullies and open forests. In my opinion, the best place to see these birds is in Tasmania. The range of Pink Robins also includes Victoria and parts of South Australia and New South Wales. Some persistence is required to see this small bird. Also, knowing their call is critical to pinpointing their whereabouts. On my last trip to Tasmania this year, I was lucky enough to be

able to be in a location where I could spend time following these small birds until I got decent views. So much so, that the male Pink Robin I saw seemed to be observing me! He was certainly a breathtaking bird and I would encourage anyone who is interested in seeing Pink Robins, to put the time in to see one. You will certainly not be disappointed.

By Susan Cully The Red Pear Fruit or Shiny Brush Apple is a widespread but uncommon tree growing up to 25 meters. The Red Pear Fruit tree bears little resemblance to a pear, the swollen stalk of the fruit is seen by some as creating a pear-like appearance. Mature trees are attractive with a lollipop shaped outline formed by the dense dome of dark green foliage. Like many beautiful Australian native plants it waits a while to make a striking display. Infrequently it will fruit heavily and produce a mass of bright red fruit revealing a beautiful, contrasting purple aril encasing black seeds. The fruit are attractive to many fructivorous birds. The flowers are however inconspicuous though interesting. Individual trees will produce separate male and female flowers, botanically speaking they are unisexual, monoecious. This tree grows naturally in sheltered, sub-tropical rainforests from Newcastle, New South Wales to Fraser Island, Queensland. It is a member of the Sapindaceae family. It prefers damp, rich basalt and alluvial soils. It can be found near watercourses and there is a mature specimen (pictured here) in the Beechmont Pioneer Reserve behind the Beechmont State School along the Back Creek. Nan and Hugh Nicholson in their book Rainforest Plants III advise that it is easily grown from very fresh seed, germinating within a few weeks. It responds well to mulching, watering and fertilising and rewards the gardener with a steady but slow growth, tolerating sun and frost once established.

Second Public Consultation of the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme and Draft Planning Scheme Policies Scenic Rim Regional Council invites the community to comment on the proposed changes made in response to submissions on the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme made under section 18 of the Planning Act 2016 and Planning Scheme Policies made under section 22 of the Planning Act 2016. As a result of the September to December 2018 consultation of the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme and Draft Planning Scheme Policies, Council has responded to submissions by: • proposing a number of zoning changes; • updating overlay mapping with new data from the State Government; • amending the policy for subdivision and Dual occupancy development on Tamborine Mountain; • increasing the minimum lot size for new Rural Residential lots from 3000m2 to 4000m2; • including a new Passive Recreation Precinct and Emerging Community Zone; • clarifying policy in relation to the promotion of tourism and major tourist destinations in the region; • reinstating the Vegetation Management Area Overlay that currently applies in the Beaudesert Shire Planning Scheme 2007; • amending the policy for Dual Occupancy Development in the Low Density and Lowmedium Density Residential Zones; and • clarifying a number of other policy matters to ensure the intended outcomes for development are accurately described in the planning scheme. The proposed changes to the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme and Draft Planning Scheme Policies will be available for public consultation from 28 August 2019 to 30 September 2019 inclusive. News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough I hope you are all coping with the high level of colds, influenza and viruses that seem to be hitting every family at the moment. Schools and work places seem to be functioning on dramatically reduced numbers. I do hope everyone who is suffering in some way is soon on the mend. Once recovered please take a moment to give thanks for those who work hard to return us to good health. Each week at St Luke’s we pray for the sick and needy but we also pray for those caring, dedicated people who work hard to make us well again. These people include mums, dads, grandmas, doctors, nurses, chemists and more. As I mentioned in last month’s news, Rev David Lunniss is now leading our services since Rev Valerie Hoare retired. Rev David is enjoying his trips to Canungra as much as we are enjoying his services. We are very grateful for his input. Have you thought about visiting St Luke’s? Now could be a good time while David is here. Bible Study has resumed again after the winter break. So, you would be made to feel welcome either Tuesday evenings at 7pm or Wednesdays at 1.30pm. Feel free to call in when you see the lights on, or the door open. The Friday evening end of month social gathering continues to be enjoyed by many and our tent at the Canungra Show where free water and a chat were on offer, was a great success. St Luke’s is thriving and the next activity will be a fund-raising street stall to be held on Saturday 21st September in the main street. We look forward to seeing you as you call by to purchase some home cooking, preserves or a plant or two. Feel free to stop and say hello.

Thanks to those who attend our trivia nights! They are a fun and cheap way to have a night out, learn something and contribute to the various causes we support in a small way. Our next evening will be Friday 13th September at Moriarty Park at 6 for 6.30pm. BYO nibblies and drinks and, please ,as much raffle money as you can spare. $5 per person with max 6 at a table. Feel comfortable to come alone, or as a couple and we just make up tables to make it work! This event will be a fundraiser for a local Mum who suffers terribly from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and desperately requires an Assistance Dog which costs a lot of course so lets get the ball rolling ... any raffle donations most gratefully accepted also!

A team of not quite so super athletes represented Moriarty Park recently in a 1:5 All Abilities Relay to raise money for people with disabilities in our region – Magic Mike Luke is a pretty super athlete and ran the entire relay accompanied by, alternately, Rowan and Bren Dalby. This was a terrific event and I would love to see more of our sporting groups have a crack at it next year !
