Construction

Underway

Construction of Canungra’s new Water Treatment Plant is underway. The existing plant, which was built in 1970 and upgraded in 1982, will be progressively decommissioned and replaced with a new $4 million plant. Building work began in August and is expected to take up to 12 months. During the construction period, the existing plant will continue to supply drinking water to Canungra; however its fluoride dosing building will need to be immediately decommissioned to make way for the new facility. As a result, the plant will not be adding fluoride to Canungra’s drinking water until the new plant is operational. In South East Queensland, fluoride is added to the water supply at a level of 0.8 milligrams per litre. Seqwater acting Chief Executive Officer Jim Pruss said Queensland Health and Queensland Urban Utilities had been advised of the fluoridation stoppage. Chief Dental Officer for the Queensland Department of Health Dr Mark Brown said during the 12-month period when there will be no water fluoridation, affected residents are encouraged to contact their family dentist or public dental service to obtain individual advice on what topical fluoride was best suited to their individual needs. “This may for example involve more regular professional applications of fluoride varnishes or gels, or a change in their existing oral hygiene regime,” Dr Brown said. “This will help to minimise

the impact of the absence of fluoridated water for the 12 months. “ Mr Pruss thanked the community for their understanding and patience during the construction period. “Once completed, the new plant will cater for increased water demand for a growing Canungra community,” Mr Pruss said. “The current plant produces 0.4 million litres of treated drinking water each day, but the new plant will have almost four

times the production capacity, with the ability to treat 1.5 million litres each day. The population is expected to grow to 3,000 residents over the next 20 years, so building the new plant is essential to support the community and local businesses into the future.” For questions on fluoridated drinking water, phone Queensland Health on 13 432 584. Canungra Ladies Service

A Ladies Service was held at the Canungra Uniting Church on Friday 5th August. The Guest Speaker was Lynda Lange, who represented the Destiny Rescue charity. Destiny Rescue is a not for profit organisation which exists to rescue and restore sexually exploited and enslaved children through eduction, vocational training and faith in Jesus Christ. Lynda, a registered nurse, and her husband Robbie, manager of a girls’ safe home, have been working in Cambodia ince 2009. In Destiny Rescue’s Aftercare program, girls are cared for by house parents native to their country, receive counselling and, with the aid of their individual caseworker, decide what they want for their futures. They attend classes in a Learning Centre or a formal school, receive vocational training, or begin employment. Some of these children have experienced deep betrayal and trauma which must be worked through before they can function in society. Others were pulled out of school at a young age and need more education before they can find safe employment. The children’s backgrounds and situations vary considerably. A collection of $650 which was taken up at the service, was donated to Destiny Rescue. The Canungra Uniting Church would like to thank everyone who attended the service.

Citizens

Raise

Concerns

Community concerns have been raised over the granting of a five year lease to Logan Drivers and Riders Association (LDRA) for Swan Park at Tamborine Village to allow the club to develop the site for carriage driving and riding activities. Mayor Greg Christensen said LDRA had proposed developing the park in Goodsell Crescent into a venue which could accommodate a range of community-based equine pursuits. He said the long-term development would include the provision of appropriate support facilities which could be utilised by other equine groups, community organisations and schools. However Tamborine District Citizens Association Inc (TDCA) has raised concerns over use of the park. The Citizen’s Association says the LDRA has significant plans to develop facilities at Swan Park including a clubhouse, arenas, round yards, covered horse yards, a jumping area, stables, storage sheds, and several parking areas. In a media release the Citizens Association said their aim is to save Swan

Over

Swan

Park from environmental damage and negative residential impacts and have called on the Scenic Rim Council to see the land repurposed back to its passive recreation zoning. “Swan Park has very high ecological and aquatic conservation significance situated along the banks of the Albert River at Tamborine with 849 metres of river frontage and riparian areas, as well as strong Indigenous connections with the local Wangerriburra People (Informally known as the Mountain People).” The Citizens Association has sought advice from Environmental Scientists who provided reports of endangered wildlife habitat including protected flora and fauna species, particularly along the 849 metres of riparian area/river frontage. Koala, glossy black cockatoos, reptile and migratory birds are among wildlife which have been observed and admired by the local public and residents over the past 30 years or more. The media release also stated that residents are concerned about the significant impact on their rural lifestyle, including traffic implications.

Development

Cr Christensen said use of the Park by the Logan Drivers and Riders Association is consistent with the Scenic Rim’s rural environment, such as carriage driving and horse riding, and is an outcome which supports the intent of Council’s Community Plan. “Swan Park is an undeveloped parcel of land which has been historically offered to the community through Council’s agistment program. Council considers that the LDRA’s proposed use would be appropriate for the property and its location.” Cr Christensen said the Council looked forward to working with LDRA as the organisation progressed its plans for the site. “Granting custodianship and certainty of tenure over the grounds will allow the organisation to apply for a range of funding assistance through State Government programs,” he said. The Citizen’s Association has started a petition which is available at Cosy Corner, Tamborine or online https:// www.gopetition.com/petitions/whodecides-the-environments-value.html.

Get Your Kids Giggling with Family Day Care

Local child care educator and mother of two, Nicole Spalding, has opened her home to parents and children for Family Day Care with Bubs Little Giggles. Nicole has been caring for and educating young children since 2002. She has worked in child minding centres locally and on the Gold Coast as well as spending several years as a foster carer, a nanny and looking after her own children, Maddison and Jackson. Family Day Care allows children to be cared for in a home environment. It gives parents the option of flexible hours as well as being eligible for Child Care Benefit Government subsidies. Children can form a close relationship with their carers which is maintained through continuity of care in the home. Nicole currently has spaces for children from six weeks of age upwards. Parents are asked to provide nappies, a spare set of clothes, food (morning and afternoon tea and lunch), a water bottle, hat, and blankets or toys for settling at sleep time. Nicole enjoys working with the children and provides children in her care with structured activities

as well as the opportunity for supervised free play. She said while there is a routine each day, she also caters for each individual child’s needs. “My plan is to make a difference to every child I have the pleasure of teaching, ensuring that they have the opportunity to succeed within the classroom and ultimately the wider community,” said Nicole. For enquiries and more information call Nicole on 0431 258 519 or contact Beaucare on 1300 416 733.

Get On The Garage Sale Trail

Canungra Village Garden Project have signed up for the 2016 Garage Sale Trail and are asking residents to turn their trash to cash while helping to save the environment and contribute to a great cause. The Garage Sale Trail is part of a nationwide event which is expected to draw 300,000 bargain hunters to 10,000 garage sales on Saturday 22nd October. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said that buying and selling at garage sales went beyond making some extra cash or bagging a bargain. “The Garage Sale Trail is a great way to bring communities together and is just one of many events on our Creating Connected Communities calendar for 2016,” he said. The Canungra Village Garden Project will contribute 100% of their raffle takings and 75% of their Garage Sale takings to Turning Canungra Pink. Their Garage Sale will be held in the driveway next to Canungra Hardware. “It’s often said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and the Garage Sale Trail is an opportunity to rethink the idea of waste,” Cr Christensen said. The Garden team are seeking donations of good quality items to ensure the garage sale is a success. So if you have one thing or ten, taking up space in your garage, and you wish to donate them to this incredibly good cause, please contact Alex Griffiths 0478 784 719.

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas I hate to say it, but Christmas is just around the corner. Really, its not that close but I wanted to get in before you all decide what you are going to buy for Christmas. No, I’m not trying to sell you anything - well, except the tired old ‘buy local’ idea that I trot out at this time every year. Again, you ask. Yes, because it is important. To me, and to the future of our district. Because you see, every time you spend your money in your town, you are helping to buy your kids a job; to buy your kid’s soccer coach a job so they don’t have to travel to Brisbane for work and then can’t find time to coach that soccer team; or maybe you are keeping some services in the town that otherwise you would have to travel for. Essentially, you buy local to keep the economy of the district going. Yes, it can be difficult. Sometimes the things we want for Christmas can’t be bought locally, and that’s ok. Sometimes you can get things cheaper elsewhere, and that’s ok too. But tell the business owners why. Give them the opportunity to compete for your business. Tell people what products you want and see if they can order them in. Observe the Moon Night By Shirlene Pott

Aquis Farm Stallion Parade a Huge Success

More than 1,000 guests attended the inaugural Aquis Farm Stallion Parade and Open Day at Canungra on Sunday 14th August as Aquis Farm unveiled its full roster of stallions and an incentive scheme for breeders. Aquis Farm Chief Operations Officer Marcus Langer said he was delighted by the response from local breeders to the Stallion roster. “It was a great day with very strong interest in each of the stallions. Our nominations team were overwhelmed with the demand for all the stallions with Holy Roman Emperor’s book now full,” Langer revealed. “The incentives we announced on the day were also very well received and we expect to take plenty more nominations over the next week and beyond. “For many people it was their first visit to Aquis Farm and we want to thank them for their support.”

All are welcome to observe the moon and its surroundings as part of ‘International Observe the Moon Night’ (InOMN). This annual International event is held around the world either in September or October. This year it is in October and this is Tamborine Village Lions Club’s fourth year participating in this event, thanks to Bryan Pott - a local who is a member of the Southern Astronomical Society of Southeast Queensland. The Society and its members will be presenting the International Observe the Moon Night with their large telescopes. This annual worldwide event is dedicated to encourage people to look up and take notice of our neighbour the ‘MOON ‘ and its surroundings. • Date: Saturday, 8th October 2016 • Venue: ‘Woodstock’- a property of Youth Enterprise Trust, 231 Plunkett Road, Tamborine. • Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm A gold coin donation is appreciated and a sausage sizzle will be available. The event is weather dependent. For details contact: Bryan on 0431 096 511. All proceeds from this event will be given to Tamborine Village Lions Club Projects.

SPORT AND RECREATION GRANTS PROGRAM SUCCESS

Canungra Owls Soccer Club was one of the successful applicants in Council’s $100,000 annual program that funds infrastructure projects for local sporting clubs to encourage healthy communities and grow the social fabric of our region. Work will commence on the top dressing of the fields at Moriarty Park as soon as the soccer season ends. Ten other clubs also received funding for this program.

FLYING FOX DISPERSAL

Thank you to local residents for your patience during the dispersal period. Some mornings were pretty noisy and smokey but the outcome has been successful to date. The flying foxes have moved to a more suitable location for the meantime but as the breeding season has now commenced State laws prohibit any further action at the Lions Park site. Officers will continue to monitor this site on a regular basis.

ARE YOU STORM READY?

As winter ends and the summer weather comes along, I urge you to ensure your property is prepared for storms and bush fire. The Get Ready Queensland website is extremely useful and you can log on to receive regular updates and reminders. POULTRY FARM REVIEW

Poultry farms have recently become contentious issues in communities where development applications have been lodged for existing farms to expand or new larger farms to develop. Advocacy on behalf of Scenic Rim residents is taking a number of paths as the development guidelines are further investigated- currently there is a misalignment between Council and State Government approval requirements for development. A motion will be forwarded from SRRC to the upcoming Local Government Association Conference for support for this review. Three other motions are being submitted regarding RADF guidelines, the Rabbit Fence and Financial Assistance Grants.

AWL Pet of the Month

Nature’s Gems

Double-banded Plover (Charadrius bicinctus) By Melissa Whitby In the last year, I dedicated a lot of time to monitoring shorebirds in Moreton Bay. Many species of shorebirds are declining in numbers due to habitat loss and human disturbance at feeding and roosting sites along their ancestral migratory pathways. One species I spent a lot of time monitoring is the Double-banded Plover. This striking plover is the only shorebird to breed in New Zealand and winter in Australia. For this reason, Double-banded Plovers are usually seen in their non-breeding plumage in Australia - grey-brown above and white below with two partial brownish breastbands. The breeding plumage of this species is distinctive with the upper breastband being black and the lower breastband being chestnut. Similar species to the Double-banded Plover are the Lesser Sand Plover and Red-capped Plover. The best way to tell all three species apart in nonbreeding plumage is to note the size of the bird, size and shape of the bill and pay particular attention to the dull bands on the bird’s chest. Doublebanded Plovers will congregate together at high tide roosts and are usually never far from water. Favoured habitats include wide sandbars, saltmarsh, mudflats, airfields and sparsely vegetated margins of freshwater and saline wetlands. In New Zealand, I have seen the birds nesting in the South Island near Kaikoura and Mt Cook during September to November. Double-banded Plovers can be seen in coastal areas of South-east Queensland and also utilise coastal areas in other States. For anyone wishing to see this small shorebird, I suggest visiting public bird hides such as the one at the Port Of Brisbane, which provides viewing of a high tide roost site which shorebirds utilise. To be guaranteed a sighting, I suggest joining the Queensland Wader Study group and being involved in shorebird counts at roost sites around Moreton Bay. The Double-banded Plover is an uncommon winter visitor to Australia and there is some evidence that this species is Double Banded Plover declining in New Zealand. To ensure the survival of species such as the Doublebanded Plovers, an effort must be made to protect vital habitat, minimise disturbances whilst birds are breeding and feeding and manage impacts such as feral animals. I hope that I have inspired some readers of this article to head out on the hunt for this stunning bird!

Border Ranges / Southern Leaf-Tailed Gecko Saltuarius swaini By Susan Cully

Have you seen a leaf-shaped piece of lichen that moves? Often described as a leaf-shaped creature, the animal being reported is actually the tail of a Leaf-Tailed Gecko. Border Ranges Leaf-Tailed Geckos can be found in Lamington, Beechmont and Tamborine. They are restricted to the Mt Warning shield volcano mountains and plateaus, and can be found in moist backyards and Photo courtesy Queensland local rainforest patches at night. Museum These reptiles are rendered almost invisible by their decorative, lichen-like skin patterns and the broken outline of their bumpy and spiny bodies. They are nocturnal, looking for insects on mossy, shaggy rainforest surfaces - rocks and tree trunks. The leaf-shaped tails can be discarded to allow escape from predators. When the tail re-grows it is unlikely to have the original pattern as the body of the gecko. Unique to eastern Australia, these animals have a special place in the evolutionary history of all reptiles. They belong to an ancient group whose current distribution reflects the contraction of formerly widespread rainforests due to past climate change. In dry times, populations of leaf-tails contracted to the small, moist forests that survived on high mountain tops. Like so many of our plants and animals they evolved as localised species, so that two, close-together mountains can have their own distinctive gecko species. Consequently, knowledge of these animals and their distributions provide important clues to tracing the history of Queensland’s rainforests. (ref: QM) Their survival depends on cool rainforest trees with niches and hollows as well as leaf litter and rotting logs. They lay one or two soft-shelled eggs in moist leaf litter, the young hatch three months later and receive no parental care. They are able to cope with low temperatures found in mountain habitats and have a life expectancy of up to 10 years.

Stay Safe from Swooping Magpies

It’s magpie breeding season and Queenslanders are reminded to be aware of the risk of injury from magpie attacks near their nests. The breeding season typically occurs from July to November with swooping usually ceasing once the chicks have left the nest. Only a small proportion of nesting magpies swoop on people and those which do will attack cyclists riding past and anyone walking near their nests. Almost all swoops at people are carried out by male magpies defending their eggs and chicks. A magpie’s defensive behaviour can range from a noncontact swoop, through to pecking, dive-bombing and sometimes front-on attacks from the ground. Tips to stay safe during magpie season include: • Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses or shelter under an umbrella to protect your face from swooping magpies (painting or sticking large ‘eyes’ on the back of your hat can also deter magpies—but this may not work for cyclists). • If a magpie swoops while you are cycling, it will probably stop swooping if you get off your bike and walk. • Avoid ‘defence zones’ around magpie nests by taking alternative routes during the breeding season. • If you must enter a ‘defence zone’, magpies will be less likely to swoop if they are watched constantly, or if people walk in close groups. • Use signs to warn others of the location of nests and defence zones, particularly in areas used by children and the elderly. • Waving sticks or umbrellas in the air or attaching a brightly coloured flag on a long pole to your bicycle can stop magpies from swooping. • If a magpie swoops shield your face and head and leave the area quickly but carefully, being mindful of your surroundings such as roads. • Never approach a young magpie. If you pick them up or get too close the parent bird may think you are a possible predator. In Queensland all native birds, reptiles and amphibians are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. This includes the magpie. Further information on living with magpies, along with printable signs, posters and leaflets, is available at http:// www.ehp.qld.gov.au/wildlife/livingwith/magpie_safe.html.

News from St Luke’s

By Di Ayscough

What a month it has been for Canungra in general, and for St Luke’s individually. This township is so alive with enthusiasm, purpose, drive and initiative. What true words to describe how the Canungra community works together to make things happen. The recently held rodeo and the show are both examples of success and hard work by dedicated people. St Luke’s can also claim that hard work and dedication are vital elements when people work together as a team to make things happen. On Friday 26th August a great night was held as 40 guests celebrated the 80th birthday of St Luke’s. Delicious food, entertainment and atmosphere set the mood for a party. Excellent team work by a small group of St Luke’s regulars meant everything was in place to make this a great success. A sincere thanks must go to our superb raffle Queen, Irene Sims for always selling so many tickets to help with our fund raising, and as has been said before 100% of funds raised are used to maintain St Luke’s. The people involved work together because off their sense of belonging. They all accept St Luke’s is an important part of their lives and they feel very comfortable in supporting whatever takes place at St Luke’s. Where do you feel a sense of belonging in your life? Is it your family, your workplace or with friends? Do you belong to a Club, a Church or some other group? Those who feel St Luke’s is part of their lives know that while there has just been a great time of celebration, it is also a place of quietness and peace, where everyone is accepted and belongs. You too are welcome to come and feel at peace in our historic church. With Blessings.

U10s Best and Fairest - Canungra Green Team with Bren Dalby

August has been an extremely busy month at the Owls - we’ve successfully hosted an U9 and U10 soccer carnival, supported The Canungra Show, held the end of season soccer presentation and had our U12 team in the finals series! The Bren Dalby Carnival on 14th August saw Moriarty Park host 14 teams from

across the Gold Coast in our first soccer carnival. The day was a huge success with all teams playing in at least six mini games each (10 minute halves) – the kids were exhausted at the end of the day, but were full of smiles, great memories and even better sportsmanship. Following the Miniroos rules meant that we did not

score each game; instead we asked all coaches/teams to vote for who they thought was the Best and Fairest Team on the day, in U9 and U10 age groups. We are proud that our U9 Girls and U10 Green team both walked away with their respective age group trophies – well done! We are looking forward to hosting more carnivals in the future. This year the Canungra Show expanded into Moriarty Park, allowing the Canungra Owls to open the canteen and raise some funds. A very big thank you to Kelly Shostacki and the group of volunteers who gave up their time to make it a success. By the time this edition of The Canungra Times goes to print, we would have had our end of season presentation. This year, we were very fortunate to have Brisbane Roar grant our request for a couple

of players to come along and help present the Club Person of the Year Award. We look forward to sharing photos from the day and publishing our 2016 award winners in next month’s publication. Our U12 mixed team, coached by Jacob Bennett, would have also started their final series campaign – we wish the team all the very best! A men and woman’s (U16+) social soccer competition will be running over the offseason at Moriarty Park. This competition is not run under Gold Coast Football and is purely for social purposes – if you’re interested contact the club or head down to Moriarty Park at 6.30pm each Monday night with $5, a dark and light shirt, shin pads and a sense of humour! Until next month…hoot hoot!

Under 9 Girls - Bren Dalby Best and Fairest Award By Dave Batten As the girls ran onto the field for the first game of their carnival, it quickly dawned on them that this was not a normal soccer weekend. The first thing they noticed was the other teams players were all boys, not another girl in sight. Their regular season was an all girls competition so this immediately had them out of their comfort zone, yet they showed no sign of fear, they were ready to get the job done. The first of eight games was against one of the leading under 9 boys teams. We lost the first game by a couple of goals and after the game the girls all wanted to know “are we playing any all girls teams today?“ The answer was no. Eight games, eight boys teams. It was hard to tell if they were worried, maybe a bit bemused but it

was clear they were keen to play their best no matter what. As the day went on it became increasingly hotter and luckily for us we had a sub for the day, little Paige McCabe from Under 8s. She played her heart out for us and even scored a goal, but most importantly gave the opportunity for everyone to take some much needed water and breathing time on the sideline. Every team we played that day was amazed and surprised at the skill and determination of the eight girls opposing them, if they started the game with an easy win mindset, they were quickly brought back down to earth. When the final hooter sounded in the last game, my team walked off with their heads held high, smiling, satisfied they had given everything they had. That

was the proudest moment for me. After coaching these young ladies all season, and watching them develop their skills and grow their team spirit, this was the moment it all made it worthwhile. In the end we won one game and drew another, and only narrowly lost the other six. The other teams, clearly impressed by the

The Canungra Times September 2016

spirit of these girls, voted us to be best and fairest for the day, a perfect reward for their efforts. I want to say thank you to: Lily, Willow, Keely, Asiya, Phoenix, Alex, Ella and Paige for having me as your coach, hopefully next year we can keep this team together and I can once again be a proud coach.

Sister Act Nominated for Excellence Award

Irene and Sheila Mills are true inspirations with their 70 years of combined commitment to the sport of golf. There are numerous achievements which Sheila and Irene have acquired in their long and rewarding golfing careers. Irene still proudly holds the ladies course record of 79 shots off the stick. She has also made two “hole in ones” in her golfing life. Their most recent achievement was the Canungra Golf Club Ladies Championships with Irene winning the C Grade Gross title over her sister, Sheila who became C Grade Gross Runner Up. Irene, born on the 9th October 1925 and Sheila, born on the 25th December 1921 achieved a significant goal last year, playing competitive golf together at 90 years of age. This was celebrated in October last year with their fellow golfers at the Canungra Area Golf Club. When asked if they have set a new goal now they have both achieved that milestone - they cheekily respond with, “We are just taking one day at a time”.

Moriarty Park News

Firstly, a huge congratulations to the Show Society and all involved in putting together a great and varied show for us all this year. The Moriarty Park committee were delighted to have MP involved this year for the first time and I have heard nothing but positive feedback about that...especially that the natural lighting available in the hall for the Fine Arts enhanced the display no end. We hope we can build on the joint venture for next year. Next major event for MP will be our Christmas Carols on 3rd December. This year we have a small (not by choice!) sub committee orchestrating the evening and if anyone would care to assist in some way please contact Bren on 0414 435 919/bren.dalby@bigpond. com. In particular if any locals would like to perform, whether it be singing, playing an instrument, dancing, or whatever your forte, that would be tremendously appreciated. Moriarty Park will again get involved in our approaching ‘Turning Canungra Pink’ tradition so watch out for info in Foodworks and newsagent windows as well as at Information Centre. We have at last acquired a computer dedicated to Moriarty Park dealings which is a great help to the committee, in particular our new Secretary Cathy Cecil ... can’t wait to offload the stack of papers and files with ‘MP stuff’ post it notes stuck on them, which adorn the floor of our office! Many thanks to Scenic Rim Regional Council for providing us with the funds to achieve this goal in Round 4 of the Community Benefit Grant. Thank you to Peter and Julie Ulrich and friends for clearing up and cleaning out the tractor shed at MP; sensational job! Peter and Julie run the dog tracking classes on Friday nights and early Sunday mornings and the obedience classes from 6-7 on a Friday night, which I encourage all dog owners to attend. Canungra Owls Soccer club held their first carnival EVER in August and I commend them for a splendid day, terrifically organised and run, well catered for and enjoyed by all. Clubs from the coast came out - some even camped at the Showgrounds the night before to make an even better weekend adventure - and they all made an effort to thank the committee for a super event. I had the honour of having the carnival named after me which was a wonderful honour and I was more than a little teary eyed about that!!! Thank you Canungra Owls ... guess I must’ve done something right in my many years as President!!! Our soccer club has also received a grant to help with an upgrade of the fields which will be a great improvement to the playing surface and conditions and hopefully enable even more sport to be played here. Well done ! At going to press we are awaiting the finals of the soccer season, with Jacob Bennett’s Under 12’s playing at home. Jacob has gone a great job this season as coach for the first time and we hope to keep him in that role as well as reffing and playing - busy fella! Thanks mate! Again...look out for what’s happening at MP for our Pink October and get involved! Our meetings are held every third Tuesday of the month at MP at 7pm and all are welcome to come along!
