Three Canungra businesses were recognised for outstanding achievements at the Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards on Friday 23rd November. Canungra FoodWorks was awarded the Corporate Citizenship Award for the support and assistance they provide to many community groups in Canungra. Local Horse Magazine, produced by Kristi Canti and her team, received the Business Marketing Award. The online magazine has over one million hits globally per month on their web site and reaches over 1.4 million people on facebook per week. The category which received the most nominations, Customer Service, was won by local cafe Bean In? Last year Bean In won an Encouragement Award and owner Sonya Van Gent and her staff were ecstatic to have won the Customer Service Award for 2012. Story continued, full list of winners, page 5.

Community Consultation for Draft Town Plan

Scenic Rim Regional Council commenced community consultation sessions for the Canungra Town Plan last month. Council officers addressed several community groups, including the Canungra Chamber of Commerce and the Canungra AH&I Society to provide details of the 20 year vision for Canungra. SRRC Manager of Planning, Scott Turner, addressed over 60 residents at a public meeting at Canungra State School on Thursday 22nd November. Mr Turner said the Draft Town Plan incorporates 800 hectares of the Canungra township and surrounding areas, allowing for population growth from 750 in the year 2012 to 3,000 in 2031. The scope of the consultation is: • To gauge the level of support for the key strategies for Canungra and consider any feedback/comments. • To determine the preferred planning scenario for managing growth in Canungra (these are outlined in the Draft Canungra Local Planning Study and Discussion Paper). • To seek feedback on the draft planning study that will inform the new planning scheme. “The Town Plan has to reference the Community Plan,” Mr Turner said, “We also have to take into account the

topography of the area - we don’t want houses in flood prone areas and we don’t want residential housing on very steep slopes.” Several people at the meeting expressed concern regarding the town’s future water supply, however Mr Turner said the Town Plan itself can not address the water issue as this is not a responsibility currently under Council jurisdication. Council is, however, working with the State water entities to address this issue. Following the consultation process, local planning strategies and land use scenarios will be reviewed and finalised and the new Scenic Rim Planning Scheme will be submitted to Council for approval. The Draft Canungra Local Planning Study and Discussion Paper are available online, at Council libraries in Beaudesert and Canungra and at Council’s Customer Service Centre in Beaudesert. Members of the community can submit feeback via Council’s web site or by filling in and posting the discussion paper to Scenic Rim Regional Council, Land Use Planning, PO Box 25, BEAUDESERT QLD 4285. Feedback regarding the Draft Town Plan should be submitted to Council no later than 5pm on Friday 14th December 2012.

Canungra Businesses Shine at Awards The 2012 awards were an initiative of Council in partnership with the region’s combined chambers of commerce representing the communities of Beaudesert, Boonah, Kooralbyn, Tamborine Mountain and Canungra. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Shane Stevenson said the Chamber was proud to be involved for the first time as a sponsor of the Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards. “It is great opportunity for the Chambers of the Scenic Rim to work together to support each other and, therefore, support all businesses within the region,” he said. “There are very diverse and unique business interests across the Scenic Rim and the Canungra Chamber of Commerce believes it is important to support the individual businesses and business communities so they prosper and develop successfully,” Shane said. Canungra’s History… Wonglepong Country Women’s Association By Chloe Pickard The Wonglepong Country Women’s Association has been active in the Scenic Rim for 87 years, starting from 1925. In 1923, Sir Matthew Nathan, Governor of Queensland, encouraged wife of Tamborine Shire Chairman Mrs E (Anne) Franklin, to form a CWA branch in the area. ‘Sarah Vale’, the land where the hall still stands, had been bought by Henry Franklin in 1872. The Wonglepong branch was formed with nine members and Mrs Anne Franklin as President. Rain often kept members from attending as there were no nearby bridges over Canungra Creek and very few cars. The meeting place started to rotate from member to member in 1933. The branch got its own telephone line in 1926. In 1929, the idea of a proper meeting place was raised and a building fund was created to make a hall. This was paid off in 1935 with the sum of £58. A quarter acre of land by the entrance of Sarah Vale was chosen for the site, and Mr E Franklin allowed the branch a 99 year lease. He also supplied the stumps that the hall would rest on, and with the help of local volunteers the hall was built. Over the years, Sarah Vale and the Wonglepong CWA were visited by many other distinguished guests. The Queensland Country Woman’s Association state president Mrs Ruth B Fairfax and Deputy State President Mrs Graham Mylne came to a garden party held at Sarah Vale. Then wheelchair-bound Miss Sylvia Corner came to speak to

the branch. She had been injured helping people in Europe during World War 1. From her the group won a tiny doll dressed in clothes knitted by Queen Mary, which now rests in the Queensland CWA state office. Since its conception, the branch has made multiple donations to charities and helped people worldwide and in the community. During World War 2, it lodged members of the Navy and Air Force in the community with the help of the Victoria League as well as becoming a Comforts Branch and assisting the Red Cross. It has repeatedly donated to causes such as the ambulance committe and Careflight. To this day, the branch still helps those in need. Op Shop Helping Local Families Every year the Canungra Op Shop distributes a portion of it’s profits back into the community. In previous years they have assisted the Canungra Owls Soccer Club and Canungra Carols (run by the Moriarty Park Committee). This year the Op Shop distributed funds to several local families with medical issues. Op Shop Treasurer, Michelle Aldridge, said while they were unable to distribute cash, they could pay for school uniforms, vouchers for groceries and other items to ease the financial burden on families. “We are grateful for the support we have received and it is wonderful to be able to provide support to individuals and community organisations through our profits,” said Michelle.

Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

By Chloe Pickard Approximately 50 people attended the Remembrance Day service held on 11th November in Canungra’s D J Smith Park. Canungra RSL Vice President Keith Cogzell led the ceremony and said he was glad to see so many people attend. Kokoda Barracks chaplain Padre Don Parker led prayers. Local bugler Tim Hunt played the Last Post. Canungra Primary School captains Regan Lowry and Emily Hughes read In Flanders Fields and We Shall Keep The Faith. Canungra RSL Services club president Bruce Williams said the day was to honour all war dead as well as Australian soldiers. “Today we remember their bravery, their sense of duty to country and their sacrifice which makes up the Australian legend,” he said. Wreaths were laid by representatives from the RSL, the Scenic Rim Council, Canungra State School, the Canungra Chamber of Commerce, the Army, the Royal Australian Navy and The Royal Australian Airforce.

Renowned Horseman to Visit Tamborine

It has been two years since internationally recognised horseman, Franklin Levinson, visited Australia and he has included Canungra in his 2013 tour. Local horse instructor and ‘Nag Nanny’, Teena Woodall, will host the first Level I Facilitator Clinic at her Tamborine facility. It is a four day clinic which runs from 10 - 13 January 2013. Franklin grew up with horses. At the age of thirteen he was the youngest ‘registered’ polo player in the US. By the time he was 17 he was training polo ponies for hire. Later he developed a passion for teaching the language, psychology, needs and nature of horses. Franklin discovered early on that knowledge about horses would enhance the experience that all his

students had with their horses. With his own unique style of horsemanship and the increasingly popular therapy that is EFL, Franklin is sure to inspire, educate and enlighten those who attend his clinic. Some of what sets Franklin apart from other trainers is that Franklin’s goal and agenda with any horse is the development of ‘trust.’ No relationship can develop and flourish without mutual trust and respect at its very core. Franklin teaches the skills, attitudes and paradigms essential to developing this sort of successful relationship with horses, and between humans as well. Seniors’ Club Kicks at Beechmont FALLS LOOKOUT IN NATIONAL PARK off MAJOR

Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause, said the Morans Falls Lookout has been given a $52,000 upgrade and makeover, providing spectacular views of the 80-metre falls and the scenic Albert River Valley. “Morans Falls is one of the most visited national parks sites in the Gold Coast hinterland, but it’s condition had declined due to erosion and an outdated design,” Mr Krause said. “The improvement project included new seating and a rest area for visitors; a sealed track all the way to the lookout; stairs to provide access for resort guests; structural improvements to the lookout itself; and updated interpretative signage. “And the stand out feature of the upgrade is the rock walls. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) staff went to great lengths to find rock from local sources to make sure the walls fit in with the surrounding environment.” Under the project, landscaping works also removed unsafe hazards like tree roots, while better-designed and improved drainage will ensure any erosion is kept to a minimum. “This is great news for our area given the

National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said Eco-tourism is a major part of the State Government’s plan for growing the tourism pillar of Queensland’s economy. “This is why we are working to increase opportunity for operators across our national park estate,” Mr Dickson said. “Lamington National Park’s walking tracks and other public facilities are hugely popular, with visitors from all around Australia and overseas.” Lamington National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Queensland and attracts approximately half a million visitors each year.

Beechmont Seniors’ Club, the brainchild of Derek Friend, is to be a weekly event held on Monday afternoons at The Hall On Graceleigh. The first meeting will be on Monday 14th January 2013 from 12 noon until 3pm. The club will offer local seniors the opportunity to meet and get involved in a number of activities including table tennis, badminton and cards. More activities may will be offered once organisers assess the demand. The $3 weekly entry fee includes tea and biscuits. “I expect some people will just want to come and have a chat, but we will have two table tennis tables, a badminton net and card tables available for all who attend,” said Derek. “I’m not exactly sure what activities those who attend will want to be involved in. I figure to start with what we have now and add activities based on the interest shown by those who attend the club events. For those who come along please be sure to let me know what kinds of things you would like to do at the club,” he said. Grants of up to $5,000 will be available to the organisers of major events in the region under new sponsorship guidelines adopted by Council. Council allocated $50,000 to an event sponsorship program in 2012/13 as part of its new Regional Events Strategy which is aimed at supporting existing major events and helping others to get off the ground. “Tourism is one of the pillars of the Scenic Rim’s economy and the importance of visitation to the region is well documented,” Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Nigel Waistell said. “The staging of festivals and events plays a key role in attracting visitors to the region. These events also have a positive

impact on the host communities.” Cr Waistell said the sponsorship program would help to deliver and attract events that showcased the region and supported the local economy. “The program has been developed to support events that offer opportunities to promote the Scenic Rim’s industries and attract participants from outside the area,” he said. “The guidelines Council has adopted will also ensure potential applicants have a clear understanding of the sponsorship evaluation process.” Event organisers should contact council’s Tourism and Economic Development Team on 5540 5111 for more information

From My Window...

I’m sure as I get older, time goes faster! This year has seemed like about five minutes of my life but looking back so much has happened! Christmas and the New Year are almost upon us. The festive season is a time for celebration, for getting together with family and friends to celebrate new life, new beginnings, and to look forward to the symbollic fresh start that each new year brings. Some of my best memories this year arose from unexpected kindesses from people. What immediately comes to mind is Rae Hope’s habit (even when she was very ill) of sending a text to friends out of the blue: ‘Remembering great memories brings a wonderful smile. Thinking of you.’ Those small acts can mean a lot and take no effort. Telling someone they look good, giving someone a hug, offering to help out when it is needed, or just offering a smile or a wave as a greeting to a neighbour as they pass by - all these things can make a real difference to somone’s day. Life is here to be lived, enjoyed and cherished and everything we can do to make someone else’s life easier or happier has to be a good thing. It helps the person on the receiving end, but it also helps the person who is giving. Everyone wins. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone and remember to practice random acts of kindness!

Letters to the Editor Changes to Canungra Library Hours Dear Editor, In 2013 there are 12 public holidays, 11 of these are library days at Canungra Library and six of these are on a Monday. What is the point of these statistical revelations? Well for starters, before Library days and times changed on 3rd September 2012 from a Tuesday afternoon to a Monday morning, hours of Library services lost have doubled. We lose 43.5 hours overall per annum as opposed to 22.5 before the change. And that’s only for this year; the next four years does not get any better. Wouldn’t be so bad if the Library was open full time, considering we are only open part-time we cannot afford to loose those extra hours, effectively going backwards in Services previously provided In writing to the Council I was informed that survey forms were filled in during July 2012 requesting a morning session and apparently the majority of people requested a Monday morning; I’m wondering if this was the case and if so if people were aware of the loss of Library hours they would loose. Having second thoughts? Then please contact the Council in writing or speak with the Library staff if you would like this reviewed for change as the trial for Monday morning opening finished on 3rd December 2012. TMC SPEECH NIGHT – as another year comes to a close

2012 has been a difficult year economically and financially for many Australians and other countries around the world. Many businesses have struggled and suffered. Many independent schools have felt the financial burdens from decreasing student numbers – some have even closed their doors. When times get difficult, this is the real test of strength and success. Tamborine Mountain College has grown again this year with a total student population of 175. The Year 9 group is the largest, as many families have expressed that they let their child make the secondary schooling choice for Year 8 and it was only after considerable disappointment at other schools that they decided to bring their child to Tamborine Mountain College for a better, caring, superior education – and how they wished that they had made this decision right from the start! Tamborine Mountain College is still a small school and even as more and more people value this and wish to become part of its family, it will always remain small with a safe learning environment. Tamborine Mountain College has had an excellent year, the pinnacle being the Opening of the “Prof Jack Walton Resource Centre”. This is a wonderful addition to the College and its students and teachers are extremely happy. Mrs Melbourne, in her 11th year as Principal, was very pleased to announce that again this year there were many successes: • Year 12 students have the real world on their doorstep – and no doubt some difficult times ahead which will require the same qualities that they have learnt at Tamborine Mountain College. “Victory & Valour” will see them through most situations in life. So not only is an excellent education important but the sort of person you have become over the years. Success educationally is highlighted by several guaranteed entries into university before OPs are even announced! College Captain Mary Mineo has also received the

prestigious Griffith University Academic Excellence Bursary! Two Year 11 students have been selected into the GUESTS program whereby they will study University courses next year with guaranteed entry into that course with a successful achievement. Sporting achievements have again been many, as part of the Independent Sporting Association for the major carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics. Several students have gone onto Regional representation and even State level championships. The College Equestrian team is still going strong. Interschool sport in HIA (Hinterland Independent Alliance) with Hills and Kooralbyn Schools continues to grow and TMC students are growing from the experience. The Drama Dept presented “The Wizard of Oz” to local primary schools and the mountain community. It has become a tradition

and is an important community event. College Leaders for next year were announced at the College’s Speech Night held at the Vonda Youngman Centre on Friday 16th November: • Captains - Jessica Leighton and Mackenzie Waring. • Prefects – Ethan Kent, Jessica Tyrer, Grace Seagrove. College life is truly wonderful – trips to USA, Palazzo Versace for the Year 12 Formal again this year, Theatre productions in Brisbane, Art Exhibitions, camps, excursions, theme parks, recreational sports such as sailing, skating, bowling, golf; college lunchtime clubs – book club, game club, gym, choir, chess, Duke of Edinburgh club, science club etc. The Tamborine Mountain College DVD 2012 captures and records all those great moments this year. And next year the College plans to take off to Europe and the Snow! Congratulations to all students who received awards on the night!

Thursday 1st November - Music Fest The Junior Band travelled to Iona College in Brisbane and played as part of Music Fest. In the nine areas used for marking the students’ performance, the Junior Band was awarded one platinum, one gold, one silver and six bronze giving them a Bronze Trophy overall. Well done students! Thursday 1st November - Interschool Rugby League The Canungra rugby league team played their second match against Highland Reserve State School. Highland Reserve scored first but the Canungra team gradually got on top of the opposition to run out comfortable winners 64 points to 4. Friday 2nd November - Tuckshop Day This is a day when the school community recognise the great work done by Tuckshop convenor Leigh Karolak and her band of fantastic volunteers who make sure that everyone enjoys the service provided by the tuckshop each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Friday 2nd November - Interschool Sport Two senior teams played in the interschool AFL competition played at Moriarty Park. Canungra 1 played some great AFL to be undefeated on the day and retain the Hinterland District Primary School Cup. Canungra 2 started the day slowly with two losses but showed great character to come back and win their final two games. All students are to be commended for their standard of play and sportsmanship. Tamborine Mountain State School and St Bernards State School came to Canungra to play netball against Canungra 1 and Canungra 2. Both teams team played their best and were undefeated. Friday 9th & Tuesday 13th November - Budding Bards Students from Years 6 and 7 learned a poem selected from a list of Australian Bush Poets for the Budding Bards Bush Poetry Competition. Selected students from Canungra and Beechmont then recited their poem twice, once for each School Community. The first performance was at Beechmont and the second at Canungra. The poets for 2012 were: Colleen McLaughlin, Tom Oliver, Noel Stallard and Bobby Miller. Bush Poetry is a very significant part of Australian history. Sunday 11th November - Rememberance Day School Captains Emily Hughes and Regan Lowry read two poems and laid a wreath on behalf of the school as part of the Rememberance Day Service at DJ Smith Park. Tuesday 20th November - Premier’s Reading Challenge All students who completed the Reading Challenge for 2012 were presented with their official certificate by the State Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause. “Literacy is one of the most important skills a young child can develop, and by taking this Challenge, local students are getting the best start they can by learning to read and write well,” said Jon. Thursday 22nd November - Prep Orientation Afternoon Prep students enrolled for 2013 were invited to spend the afternoon at Prep. They started at 1pm with a snack followed by a quick play and then some planned activities. Page 16

Saturday 17th November - Creek Bank Working Bee The working bee concentrated on the area of the creek bank up near the tennis courts and made good progress on this area. As always, the school was very grateful to Jodie Clifford for her expertise, hard work and leadership of the Green Team. Thanks also to Groundsman Trevor Skelton who ensures everything is organised so that the working bees are successful; and to Dave Staver, who brought a bobcat which made a difference very quickly! The efforts by all who attended were greatly appreciated. Friday 16th November - District Rugby League By Steve Moriarty, Coach The rugby league team travelled to St Bernard’s State School for the annual District Rugby League competition. The first game was against St Bernard’s with Canungra dominating play from the kick-off, combining some great attack with outstanding defence to run out easy winners by 38 points to nil. The second game was against Tamborine Mountain State School and was played under very hot conditions. This game ended up being the grand final as Tamborine had also defeated St Bernard’s earlier in the day. The game was an intense affair with both teams determined to win the title of District champions. Canungra managed to score first to take a 6 nil lead and eventually wore the opposition down to run out comfortable winners 26 points to nil. This result ensured that the Canungra team are again District champions and it is worth noting that they did not have a point scored against them in either of their matches, such was their commitment in defence. The team are to be congratulated on the fitness, skill and sportsmanship displayed throughout the day. Kids Booked Up These Summer Holidays

Kids are invited to enter a world of magic, legends and fairytales when they join the Summer Reading Club at Scenic Rim libraries. Children of all ages are welcome to participate in the program, which was developed by the State Library of Queensland to encourage kids to keep reading over the long summer break. This year’s theme, ‘Untangled Tales’, focuses on multicultural folk, legends, myths and fairytales and invites children to explore and untangle magical and wonderful tales from around the world. Current and new library members can pick up their free Summer Reading Club pack including activities, freebies and a ‘reading log’ from any library branch. Kids are encouraged to use the log to record their summer reading and drop it in to any local library branch during the program for the chance to pick up some great prizes. A range of free Summer Reading Club activities will be happening across most library branches to keep kids captivated with reading over the holiday period. The program officially launches on Saturday 1st December and from Monday 3rd December kids can log on to the national Summer Reading Club website at www.summerreadingclub.org.au to access games, prizes and lots of fun activities. The holiday program wraps up on Friday 25th January – so pick up your free Summer Reading Club fun pack from your local library and get reading! The hills of Beechmont will once again be the backdrop for an evening of music and Christmas festivities as the Beechmont State School P&C Association hosts “Carols on the Mountain” on Saturday 15th December. This year’s event, held at the Hall on Graceleigh, will be bigger and better with the inclusion of markets from 3pm, followed by carols, the lantern parade and fireworks (weather permitting). Tasty food will be available and a licensed bar will be operating. There

will also be battery operated candles and Christmas novelties for sale and a free jumping castle. Market stall holders are most welcome. The monthly Open Mike session at Canungra RSL Services Club has inspired one young guitarist. Jared Plant joined in the Open Mike session at the Club on Sunday 11th November and the encouragement and feedback from performers and management contributed to a fantastic first time performance for him. “Music is a language that all people understand and appreciate,” said Jared, “Music is a way to just be in the moment I guess. Music’s also a great way to express yourself, without saying anything.” “I remember being very young, like around 3 or 4, and my Grandma bought me my first guitar for Christmas. My uncle Tony was there and he showed me some techniques. I messed around on that guitar occasionally.” “About five months ago I picked guitar up again. My Dad’s friend Johno taught me for a while, then I started learning music on my own. Tamborine Horses Rehabilitation Retreat’s Show included classes for rescue horses

By Chloe Pickard Rain did not stop a several hundred strong rider turnout for the Tamborine Horse Rehabilitation Retreat’s first Open T-Shirt Horse Show held at Cedar Creek Pony Club on Saturday 10th November. Approximately $2,000 was raised to support the Retreat. A Registered not for profit organisation, THRR Rehabilitates neglected, surrendered and slaughter bound horses and aims to find them appropriate adoptive homes. Horses arrive from racing studs, slaughter yards, sale yards and as private surrenders. Vice President Jessica Moreland said the day had been a great success with riders coming from as far away as Northern NSW and Brisbane. To match the retreat’s message of healing, there was the Blemishes Don’t Matter class for those horses deemed unfit to show by conventional judging, as well as a wide range of other classes for all competitors. The novelty classes included Fancy Dress, Prettiest Mare and Egg and Spoon on Horseback. In the evening two brave members of Tamborine Fire Brigade rode the mechanical bull and a live band played. New Telecommunications Consumer Protection Code By Suzanne Roberts Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers Historically, complaints to the telecommunications ombudsman exceed the national average for complaints by consumers for other services. Common points of frustration included consumers lacking timely and comprehensive information regarding their mobile plan. Customers complained that critical information, such as when they were close to exceeding their “usage cap,” was not available in a timely manner. Further, the cost of certain basic units of service (the cost of an SMS, a standard domestic mobile call and one megabyte of data), the lack of transparency in the complaint making process and confusing and often misleading advertisements rounded off consumer complaints. The new Telecommunications Consumer Protection code (most of which became effective from 1st September 2012) has been heralded as the solution to these problems. The code shifts the onus onto telecommunication providers to ensure: - In advertising telecommunications, providers must not use the term “cap” misleadingly, and only use it when it is a “hard cap,” which cannot be exceeded. The unit cost of one SMS, one standard two minute domestic mobile phone call and one megabyte of data must be clearly advertised. All advertising claims about data speeds, such as broadband speeds, must be reasonably substantiated (the cut-off date for implementing this was 27th October 2012). - The provision of a Critical Information Summary statement outlining pertinent information detailing essential service terms including, but not limited to, pricing arrangements and complaint resolutions processes, (the cut-off date for implementing the above is 1st March 2013). - The provision to consumers of notifications for certain thresholds of usage when their value included plans reach 50, 85 and 100% of the total advertised usage. These notifications must be made within a 48 hour window from when the usage was reached, and must include disclosures of charges which apply

once usage has been exceeded. In line with these initiatives, providers must also give information on international roaming charges and can only access customer security deposits in narrowly defined circumstances. The cut-off date for implementing the above in relation to data plans is 1st September 2013 for all providers; while the cut-off date for compliance for SMS and voice calling plan providers is 1st September 2013 and 1st September 2014 for large and small suppliers respectively. - Providers must not bill customers for charges older than 160 days. Further, providers must have a ready record of a customer’s 24 month billing cycle, which must be made available to the customer free of charge. When a direct debit payment scheme has been authorised, 10 days notice must be given before each direct debit (implementation date 1st March 2013). The code mandates that all complaints must be acknowledged within two days and resolved within three weeks. There are also provisions for the special circumstances which constitute urgent complaints which must be resolved within two days. Suppliers must now also proactively promote the services of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman as a complaint resolution vehicle, (implementation date 1st March 2013). Finally, the industry is obliged to undertake “Communications Compliance”, where compliance with the code is measured and continuously monitored in the context of clearly defined customer service metrics and regulatory benchmarks, (the implementation date 1st March 2013). While most consumers may feel that enough information about pricing and so forth is available from the large telecommunications providers (an impression created by sheer volume of text, fine print and cumbersome contracts) the aim of the new code is to increase the quality and simplicity of the information provided by these entities. This simplicity allows consumers to make more informed decisions when purchasing and comparing usage plans, while also alleviating the trauma of an unexpected “bill shock”. Red-Rumped Parrot (Psephotus Haematonotus)

Throughout my years of chasing birds, my first encounter with particular species has stuck in my mind. One such bird is the Red-rumped Parrot. This exquisite little bird was one of the first parrot species I ever identified for myself. I was 11 years old and on a family holiday on the Darling Downs at a rural property. The thing that jumps out about the Red-rumped Parrot is the startling colours of the male bird. The head is a vivid iridescent green, with yellow underparts and a red rump. Female birds are distinctively different to the male by having a dull-brown body and olive brown tail. A similar species to the Red-rumped Parrot is the Mulga Parrot. The best way to tell the birds apart is that the Mulga Parrot is slightly larger and the male bird has a small yellow patch above the bill and a red patch on the back of the head. Whereas, the male Red-rumped Parrot has a vivid green head with no other colours visible. Usually this parrot species is seen in pairs or flocks. It spends much of its time foraging on the ground for grass seeds.

When disturbed, the birds will fly a short distance, land and chatter to each other. The call of the Red-rumped Parrot is a sweet musical song that is easy to recognise. At grain properties on the Darling Downs, I have seen birds come to feed at the base of grain silos where the grain has been spilled. The Red-rumped Parrot is a bird I usually see in drier inland areas such as Dalby, Warwick and Stanthorpe. This small parrot seems to have adapted to habitat clearing and farmland development throughout its southern Queensland range. The range of this parrot extends from southern Queensland, through New South Wales and Victoria into South Australia. It can be seen in a variety of habitats, which include crops, farm paddocks, urban parks, timbered watercourses and suburban house blocks. This bird can nest from August to January and inland populations are responsive to rainfall. Usually, the birds will utilise a tree hollow, stump or fence posts. Four to six eggs can be laid. The Red-rumped Parrot is a common bird throughout inland southern Queensland. Many local communities have come to recognise the small parrots and the birds have adapted to the food sources that the urban areas provide. This is one species that I feel confident I will continue to see in years to come. I hope that for any of the readers who see this small bird in the future, that you gain as much pleasure sharing their space as I do.

By Chloe Pickard Lawless is the second film Nick Cave and director John Hillcoat have made together, and it’s based on the book The Wettest Country In The World by Matt Bondurant. Set in Prohibition-era Franklin County, America, it tells the story of the moonshiner Bondurant brothers. Trouble comes with psychotic Special Deputy Charlie Rakes (played by Australian actor Guy Pearce). He wants a cut of their profits, and starts a war when they refuse. To add to the trouble, youngest Bondurant Jack wants to expand their business by dealing with dangerous city mobsters. Lawless definitely earns its MA rating, with some very realistic violence in parts. It’s a little overlong, but worth watching for some great acting by Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain. I especially recommend it for fans of Boardwalk Empire.

The Right Time Is NOW for Tracey Davis

Canungra singer, songwriter and bass player Tracey Davis is country through and through, a self taught musician with a unique music style that is Tracey Davis. Tracey was born in Longreach and reared on a cattle and sheep station just outside Blackall, in Central Queensland. Riding, training and mustering horses was a regular part of her life and as a youngster she played bass and sang in her family’s band, New Image, for country balls and dances. Any girl who has cut her teeth on the Stockman’s Hall of Fame annual balls is obviously intended for a musical career. After years of playing at festivals from Charters Towers to Rockhampton, Tracey settled on the Gold Coast, where she was a founding member with her husband Rob Davis and Dave Luxmoore of the highly popular Bushfire Bluegrass Band. During the nine years she played in major events, festivals and corporate gigs with the band, picking up more awards in the process, Tracey penned and recorded her first album, It’s Hot with Bushfire releasing two singles and videos It’s Hot and Horses and Harleys. Tracey Davis has performed at the Urban Country Music Festival; the Songwriters Café, Caboolture; the People’s Choice Awards, Tamworth and with the Bushfire Bluegrass Band was runner-up in the Toohey’s New Country Music Band Search at Tamworth Country Music Festival 2009.

Canungra Owls Soccer News

By Bren Dalby It’s great to hear so much interest already in an Open Women’s soccer team (maybe two!) for next season. David Huynh has kindly offered to take on the coaching position and will start pre-season training for all ladies from Thursday 6th December. Notices regarding times and contacts are in FoodWorks. It must be noted that until ‘sign on’ at the end of January, if any ladies didn’t play soccer with another club last season, they will not be insured, therefore any preseason training will be viewed as ‘social’ and not an official club training regime. Sign-on for all teams will be in January. It is easier to formulate teams and have kids playing where they want and with whom they want, if everyone signs up by the end of January. Full payment is required by the end of March. Credit card payments can be made on-line and therefore there will be no payment plans through the club. It was great to have several lovely people come forward on presentation day to help out. If a dozen or so people take on to do just one task, life is a heckuva lot easier for all involved! More volunteers, particularly in the canteen, would be terrific - if your children are training and you are there, please organise to open the canteen, even for coffee, soft drinks and lollies - although a few chips and the odd dim sim are easily done and generally much appreciated! The challenge was hard but all participants perservered and came out the other end looking and feeling healthier. Not only did they learn how to get the weight off but they learned the most important lesson - how to keep it off. With training and eating healthy it is easy to keep weight off and look your best. The winner of the challenge was Bernice Virag who lost a huge 18.4kg. She took home a $200 gift voucher for Personal Training

sessions, $200 voucher for Canungra Beauty and Acupuncture, $100 cash, $150 Sports watch. Bernice followed the training and diet all the way through and never gave up. Congratulations Bernice for such a great effort. It goes to show that if you can be motivated enough to follow all the advice given and never miss a training session you can achieve whatever you want.
