Awards A Showcase Of Our Region’s Best Businesses

The achievements of businesses were in the spotlight at the 2013 Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards held at the Centre, Beaudesert on Friday 29th November. Two Canungra businesses, Bean In? and Local Horse Magazine were amongst the winners at the sold-out gala where the best of the best were recognised for their endeavours before an audience of more than 250. Local Horse Magazine won the Business Marketing Award for the second year, which was presented to Kristy Canti by Canungra Chamber of Commerce President Shane Stevenson. Bean In/Bean To owner Sonya Van Gent won Employer of Choice. Councillor Virginia West said it was fantastic that so many businesses in the Scenic Rim nominated for the event has a record number of nominations this year. “A huge congratulations to Local Horse Magazine and Bean In. Their awards are a tribute to their business practices,” said Virginia. Another highlight of the evening was the awarding of the prestigious Platinum Award to Tamrookum milk producer Scenic Rim 4Real Milk. Dairy Farmer Greg Dennis established his own milk processing plant on his dairy and began marketing and distributing under the Scenic Rim 4Real Milk brand earlier this year. Community Steps in to Save Canungra RSL Services Club

Canungra RSL Services Club will remain open after the motion to cease trading was withdrawn at a Special General Meeting on Sunday 10th November. Club President, Keith Cogzell said the Club received $2,500 in donations from the community, as well as an offer of funding and management support from the Nerang RSL and Memorial Club. The support from the Nerang Club is instrumental in the survival of the Club. Keith said the Committee work towards upgrading the facilities with the assistance of members. The Club has struggled to make a profit for several years, however the Committee believes they can turn the last five years of losses around, with Keith saying he hopes the Club will break even this year. “We had a lot of phone calls and interest after members were advised of the issue in local media and by email. We are very grateful to the people who have volunteered their money, time and expertise to keep the Club going,” said Keith. “In a town with a long association with the defence forces through Kokoda Barracks, the RSL Services Club is an

important social feature for many service and ex-service personnel, as well as members of the community.” A group of members are working with the Club Manager, Sarah Kurz, to improve the Club’s facilities and make it more appealing to families. “We are looking at several options for refurbishment and upgrading the facilities with a view to making the Club more family friendly. The support we received from members is invaluable,” said Sarah. The Club held a working bee on

Sunday 1st December where many of the Club’s members assisted with gardening, cleaning and general maintenance, as well as putting up the Club’s Christmas decorations. “We really appreciate the time and effort out members put in to the working bee,” said Keith. The Club will continue to host their popular Open Mike Sessions on the second Sunday of each month and will feature a special Open Mike Session on New Year’s Eve.

Spook Central Picnic Place was a mix of spooky characters as everyone from toddlers to teens dressed up for Halloween. The tradition of trick or treating in this area has gone on for several years, with younger children starting about 5pm and the evening winding up by 7.30pm. It was a great atmosphere throughout Riverbend Estate. Some residents went to the extent of decorating their yard which provided some scary situations for the trick or treaters. Many of the adults got into the spirit (pun intended) too, dressing up while taking their children around and having a super scary time!

Motorcyclists Seek Feedback from Community

The Australian Motorcycle Business Chamber met with Canungra business people recently to discuss the effect motorcyclists have in the town. Parking and noise on weekends were two negatives that were mentioned, however it was acknowledge that the motorcyclists are an important contributor to the enconomy of the area, as well as adding to the atmosphere in town, particularly on weekends. Travis Windsor of the Chamber

said he welcomed any feedback from residents about making the town more bike-friendly, but also how the motorcyclists can add positively to Canungra. The Chamber is hoping to hold a motorcycling event in Canungra mid-May 2014 and Travis would like to hear from anyone interested in assisting with organisation or residents and business people who would like to contribute. He can be contacted on 0448 852 739.

Think Queensland, Buy Locally This Christmas

The Scenic Rim is underpinned by our small businesses across every sector, and the LNP Government has launched the “Think Queensland, buy locally this festive season” campaign. Whether you are buying prawns or a ham for Christmas lunch, a computer, car service, clothing or books, I encourage all of us to support our local businesses and make your Christmas gift go further – every dollar spent locally returns to our community many times the amount spent through wages, rates and money spent on goods and services purchased by that local business from other businesses.

New Legislation To Protect Primary Producers

In November, the LNP Government introduced new biosecurity legislation to make Queensland’s biosecurity laws clearer, more efficient and workable to protect Queensland’s primary producers. A number of biosecurity-related

permit schemes will be simplified and fees rationalised, such as consolidating 56 cattle tick fees into 12 fees. A single fee will now cover application and permit fees, and a single permit renewal period will be introduced to ease the burden on people who hold multiple types of permits.

Mobile Phone Use In Vehicles

Road safety advocates are calling for further restrictions on the use of mobile phones in vehicles due to drivers being distracted behind the wheel. This followed the case of a P-plater who accidentally killed a pedestrian in mid-2012 after failing to see the pedestrian on the road because she was looking at Google maps on her phone. Distraction is now part of the “fatal 5” when it comes to road safety, and I would be keen to hear the community’s views on this issue.

Have A Happy And Safe Christmas

Kit and I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe, happy Christmas and a prosperous 2014. Please contact me if I can be of assistance in any matter. PO Box 656, Beaudesert 4285 Phone 1800 813 960 beaudesert@parliament.qld.gov.au facebook.com/jonkrausemp

The Canungra Rural Fire Brigade in front of their new station.

Fundraising Pays Off for Canungra Rural Fire Brigade By Chloe Pickard

The Canungra Rural Fire Brigade’s twenty years of fundraising has paid off with the opening of their new station. The station was officially opened on Saturday 16th November, when local community and government members as well as Queensland Fire officials gathered to congratulate the Brigade. Over twenty years the Brigade raised $80,000 of the station’s $150,000 cost through community donations and fund raising, with the other half raised by the compulsory fire levvy. The station will serve as a centre of operations for the Brigade and also house Canungra’s three fire trucks and other equipment. Queensland Fire Inspector Corey Bock said what made the Canungra

Storm Season Gutter Cleaning

Rural Fire Brigade special was its strong links within the community. “The Rural Fire Brigade is very community focused and community driven and they’ve put up with so little for so long and to secure this station for them has been a milestone,” he said. Construction started in August this year, with brigade members putting in hours of unpaid work on the shed’s building, electrics and plumbing. In his speech Brigade Chairman Mark Pickard thanked the community who had generously supported the Brigade and its endeavours and the contractors who had worked on the station. “Today, the Brigade acknowledges the organisation, not only for the high quality of workmanship but also for the very generous contractual terms by which they undertook that work, revealing on

their part a close understanding of the support needed to further the capabilities of a volunteer community emergency service,” he said. First Officer Stephen Geiger and State Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause unveiled the official plaque at the opening. During their speeches, Mr Krause, Division 2 Councillor and Deputy Mayor Virginia West and Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent all thanked the Fire Brigade for their service to the community. Assistant Commissioner for SouthEast Queensland Peter Beecham said what made rural fire brigades great was “the commitment and the dedication and the passion of the men and women who see that they have an opportunity to do something for their community.”

2013 Flood Recovery Work Continues

Council is rolling out disaster restoration projects totalling almost $6.3 million as part of the recovery program from ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald and the rain event earlier in the year. The total cost of restoration works arising from these events is expected to exceed $75 million. Most of the current roll outs are in the western parts of Scenic Rim but $204,875 has been allocated to build a retaining wall at Illinbah where landslips caused numerous problems. As the Queensland Restoration Authority approve more claims residents will see an increase in roadworks throughout the region.

Little Ticks, Big Problem!

The Australian Government Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Baggoley, has established a Clinical Advisory Committee on Lyme disease to provide him with advice on the evidence for Lyme disease in Australia. Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria (spirochete) that infects humans from the bite of ticks which are infected with the bacteria. It can imitate many other diseases such as MS, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease (ALS), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and more, making diagnosis difficult. Early Lyme disease symptoms are flu like Janelle and Barry Day of the Canungra School of Arts Hall Committee with John Williams symptoms such as headache, fever, muscle and John Roberts of Beaudesert District Orchid and Foliage Society soreness and unexplained fatigue. Have Your Say! Sign On Beechmont Road

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Looking Back... December - a time of excitement, looking forward to Christmas, school holidays and a bit of reflection at the end of the year (like we don’t do enough of that already). What a year it has been for our region. After a change in State Government in 2012, we had a change in the Federal Government in September 2013. Any election year seems to bring some economic uncertainty and this was no exception. We started 2013 with storms so severe they caused widespread damage across the region. The Goat Track, the road linking Tamborine Mountain and Canungra, was closed for seven months while repairs were carried out. Meanwhile the town felt the effects. Further strain was placed on families who work in one town and live in the other - with both time and money impacted. Some businesses reported a downturn in trading of up to thirty per cent, with the road closure and further wet weather early in the year sited as reasons for the downturn. And we are finishing the year with a flood of roadworks. First the Queensland Urban Utilities upgrade of water pipes, then the resurfacing of the road by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Bit of disruption to traffic and frustration for drivers, but necessary work nonetheless.

I am the first to get annoyed at graffiti or vandalism but I agreed with what was trying to be conveyed here. I am sure I am not the only one. Most locals are outraged/confused at why hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on upgrading a road that was wider, safer and smoother than most of Beechmont Road, had a centre line, was well lit and over all not in anyway unsafe. It is perplexing that the road from the Kokoka army barracks would be so overly reconstructed. Locals and tourists have to endure unsafe conditions daily. Beechmont road in January 2013 was affected by landslide, it was not properly cleaned up until the last week in November. We don’t even have a road that is safe for two vehicles to pass in some parts; we don’t have centre line in some parts. Council/Road Authority deem it ok to dump gravel to make up for missing bitumen to make up for actual safe road width, each time it rains, the gravel washes across the road making conditions more unsafe, not to mention stone chips on car duco and windscreens. A simple centre line would help motorists and hopefully let the motor bike riders know that they are on the wrong side of the road! The amount of near misses is a warning that time

is running out and a fatality is in fact “just around the corner”. It took two hours from the time I passed the sign in the morning to my return for the sign to be removed. It is just a pity pot holes and road works markings can’t be dealt-with with the same such swiftness. Shame on whoever approved such road works and no wonder people are upset as being held up for so many months at road works that did not need to be done for safety but just because a proposal was put in by the defence department and not Joe average who is concerned about the actual betterment of an entire community. I am in no way disrespectable to our amazing defence force, I am all too familiar with the importance and the incredible sacrifice our men, women and their families make daily. I just want a safe road to drive on with my baby from our home each day. Yours truly, Just an average Beechmont local

For many it has been a year of changes. To be honest I have rarely seen a year in which there have been so much change and disturbance to the normal ebb and flow of life. Personally, for 2014 all I would like is a little less extremity and a little more normality An even flow of things - weather, life, everything. I hope all our readers have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Thank you for your support, feedback and contribution to The Canungra Times. Without you, there is no paper! I would especially like to thank all the regular contributors who voluntarily send their columns in each month. The Canungra Times has always tried to be a voice for the community and it is through these columnists that we are able to achieve this. Have a great month everyone - see you in 2014! Page 14

We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! Our office will be closed Monday 24th December 2013 and will re-open Tuesday 7th January, 2014 We look forward to assisting you with all your taxation and business needs in 2014 Regards, Sam, Noela & Debbie

CHRISTMAS IN CANUNGRA Canungra Showgrounds, Saturday 7th December from 5.30pm

Think Local and Shop Local This BUY LOCALLY THIS FESTIVE SEASON

Buy local this Christmas - try one of T-Bone’s turduckens!

Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause is encouraging residents to buy locally this festive season to help bolster small business sales and support local jobs. “The countdown to Christmas has well and truly begun and local businesses, particularly small businesses need our support,” Mr Krause said. “Small business is the backbone of Queensland’s four pillar economy, underpinning the vital sectors of tourism, agriculture, mining and construction. “By asking the community to ‘Think Queensland, buy locally this festive season,’ we aim to provide an economic boost to communities across the state. “When you shop local, your money stays local and that’s how every Queenslander can play a part in supporting their community. Each dollar spent in a local business returns many times that amount to the local economy through employee wages, rates and the purchase of goods and materials,” Mr Krause said. Mr Krause said the highly successful ‘Think Queensland, buy locally’ campaign, launched earlier this year in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, has been extended to encourage shoppers to buy

locally this festive season. “Buying from local businesses is all about backing fellow Queenslanders and boosting our home grown enterprises wherever possible. “This initiative shows how the Newman Government is supporting Queensland’s 410,000 small businesses unlike Labor who treated this vital sector of our economy with utter contempt. The Newman Government is committed to fostering a business friendly environment. Minister for Small Business Jann Stuckey said the well-known ‘Think Queensland, buy locally’ design has been given a festive update, and a range of festive themed material is now available to download from the Queensland business and industry portal www.business.qld.gov.au. “Businesses can get involved by downloading and printing ‘Think Queensland, buy locally this festive season’ poster and sticker designs to display in their businesses. Flyers, bunting and a factsheet are also available. Queensland small businesses represent approximately 96% of all businesses in the state, employ more than 1 million Queenslanders and span every industry sector.

Christmas - Support Your Community

CHRISTMAS IN CANUNGRA Canungra Showgrounds, Saturday 7th December from 5.30pm

TAKE A LOOK AROUND TOWN BEFORE YOU SHOP ONLINE

This Christmas, take the time to look around your local shops before heading out of town. As well as finding gifts you might not have seen elsewhere, shopping locally has many benefits for your community. Shopping locally strengthens the community’s economy and ensures the conveniences will remain into the future. A stronger local economy also encourages businesses to stay in your area which creates more jobs. Another benefit of shopping locally is that locally bought produce can be fresher and tastier than mass produced products or those transported around the country. Queensland boasts succulent seafood, a large range of tropical fruits, world-class beef and award winning wines. Christmas can be one of the most stressful shopping times of the year. The crowds and parking are always worse the closer you get to Christmas Day, whether you are shopping for gifts or food.

Tam Wood from My Country Escape said the is a myth that people can buy items cheaper online than in a retail outlet. “Most of my stock is priced lower than online prices and of course there is no postage,” she said. Tam stocks a range of gifts including candles, women’s clothing and jewellery and children’s gifts - and she is happy to give advice about what might be suitable as a gift for that special lady in your life! Canungra FoodWorks, Joseph the Greengrocer and T-Bone’s Butchery all have fresh produce for your Christmas Day dinner. They might even give you a few tips on what is in season or something different to try! Local businesses often show a greater interest in supporting local causes and charities which contributes to a stronger sense of community and a great way of life. By shopping locally you will get to know your neighbours, the people who work at the local shops and the other customers shopping there.

The Shard Chronicles

Local author Liam Taylor has released the first in a series of novels available as ebooks. The Shard Chronicles follows the life of Austin Cooper from birth to his mid-teens. When has was two years old an unidentified man saved his life, when he was five when the man guided him during his first use of a remarkable ability. At age seven, the man told Austin the talent he had was unique among anyone else in existence, and given to ensure his role as future protector of an ancient and powerful artefact. Austin matures with the understanding that no one else has the ability to manipulate time, to move through it at a different level, a different speed. Liam says he had a desire to write throughout his formative years. “However, the specter of an

antiquated belief that a son must follow his father’s vocation, coupled with some extraordinarily bad advice, influenced a naïve adolescent into unfulfilling jobs,” said Liam. It wasn’t until November 2009 that the story of The Shard Chronicles formed in his mind, a story he felt compelled to write. Liam self-published the novel which took three and a half years to write, re-write, edit and publish. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, to an English mother and Kiwi father, Liam loved books from an early age. He said he enjoyed a wide variety of reading, but had a particular fondness for science fiction/fantasy. During December, The Shard Chronicles will be available for only $0.99 (RRP $3.99).

Conveyancing Tips

How to Find a Good Property Manager By Suzanne Roberts, Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers

Taking the plunge into the property investment market is a great step forward to creating financial security. Unlike a number of other investments, property is usually considered a ‘passive’ investment. However successful property investment still requires you to make informed and well researched decisions. One of your most important decisions will be the ‘management’ of your investment property. This will include finding tenants, creating and signing lease documents, collecting a bond and regular rent and dealing with and managing maintenance issues. Here is a list of questions that we suggest you should be asking potential property manages before signing with them: • What are your management and leasing fees? • What is your process of finding a prospective tenant? Does it include an interview and checks of tenancy databases? • Will you conduct a thorough inspection before renting the property including taking photographs? • How often do you conduct rental inspections of my property? • Will rental inspections include photographs and reports and do you send them to me? • What steps do you take to ensure all contactors working on my property are properly licensed and insured? • May I please speak to 3 of your current landlords who have used you for more than 6 months? Once under management it is the responsibility of your property manager to maintain contact and keep you informed of any issues arising from your property. Remember, as with anything you purchase you get what you pay for. The cheapest management fees and leasing rates might not always be the best. Nature’s Gems

Kaki (Himantopus novaezelandiae) This year I have been lucky enough to encounter several extraordinary, endangered bird species. After spending time in New Caledonia with the Kagu, I decided to fly to New Zealand’s South Island, in pursuit of the Kaki. The New Zealand Kaki is also known as the Black Stilt and is one of the most threatened bird species in New Zealand. Under the guidance of New Zealand rangers, I was able to experience first-hand what is being done to bring this bird back from the brink of extinction. The kaki is a wader bird that was once found throughout New Zealand. It can now only be found in the braided river basins located near Twizel in the South Island. My first day out with DOC rangers involved walking along a braided river on the lookout for Kaki. All sightings were recorded and birds observed undertaking mating behaviour would continue to be closely monitored. To help boost Kaki numbers in the wild, a captive breeding program is undertaken by the Department Of Conservation (DOC) in Twizel. With the utmost care, DOC rangers locate wild Kaki nests to collect eggs which are taken back to the

By Melissa Whitby captive breeding facility to be incubated. Once the eggs hatch, chicks are then raised to sub-adults. These sub-adults birds are then prepared for release back into suitable habitat around Twizel. Once these sub-adults are released, they are provided with supplementary feeding for a set period and are monitored by their human charges. I had the privilege of being involved in such tasks. The future of the Kaki rests in the hands of the New Zealand people. I was very impressed with the dedication of the DOC rangers involved in the Kaki Recovery Programme. These individuals were incredibly gifted & passionate b i r d people and without their dedication, the future for the Kaki would be bleak. For anyone heading to NZ who is interested in seeing a Kaki, I recommend booking a guided tour to the Kaki/Black Stilt viewing hide in Twizel with DOC, which runs from October to April every year. It is my aim to travel back to NZ next year to learn more about this unusual bird….

I would like to wish all the readers of the Canungra Times, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.. HAPPY BIRDING!

Hark the herald angels sing

Hark! The herald angels sing “Glory to the newborn King Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies With angelic hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Beth-le-hem!” Hark! The herald angels sing “Glory to the newborn King”

Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of the Virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing “Glory to the newborn King” Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King”.

JOY TO THE WORLD

Joy to the world, the Lord is come. Let earth receive her King Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room And Heav’n and nature sing And Heav’n and nature sing And Heaven and heaven and nature sing Joy to the earth the Saviour reigns Let men their songs employ While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, and wonders of His love. Page 24

I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus

I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night She didn’t see me down the stairs to have a peek She thought that I was tucked up in my Bedroom fast asleep Then I saw mummy tickle Santa Claus Underneath his beard so snowy white What a laugh it would have been If daddy had only seen Mummy kissing Santa Claus last night. The Canungra Times, December 2013

TMC SPEECH NIGHT – “The Old School Yard” Tamborine Mountain College is full of wonderful memories and experiences. It is a place that generates warmth and comfort. They say school days are the best days of your life and this is the case for TMC campus. The old school yard here is not so old – mind you, celebrating 20 years in 2015, as well as opening the new building “The Michael Kyle Learning Centre” and of course TMC Primary. In addition to the fabulous new buildings, with a colourful zest for life and learning, the feeling of the old school yard is a happy safe place where special cherished memories are made – not only for the students but also for our teachers and staff and parents too. The Principal, Mrs June Melbourne, was delighted this year when considering leadership positions for next year, that there was a particular focus on the motto “Victory & Valour”. She said it is these very values that make our College strong – a commitment to Victory, for the College and personally, as well as Valour – having the courage, the heart, the endurance to always try your best. College Captains 2014: Edward Sarroff & Sasha Gubbins. College Prefects 2014:

Samantha Wooller, Brady Davis, Jonathon Wendell. Mrs Melbourne announced that again this year there were many examples of victory and valour: • Yr 12 success educationally is highlighted by our guaranteed entries into university before OPs even come out – 11 student offers made this year and we only have 14 OP eligible students! Past student Dux last year who received the prestigious Griffith University Academic Excellence Bursary, Mary Mineo, is studying at Griffith University in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences and was recently recognised as having outstanding academic excellence and is already being encouraged to pursue honours and doctoral qualifications. This year there is one Yr 11 student selected into the GUESTS program whereby she will study a University course next year with guaranteed entry into that course with a successful achievement. • Sporting achievements have again been many. As part of the Independent Sporting Association for the major carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics, several students have gone onto Regional representation and even State level

Tamborine Mountain College students at Speech Night

championships. • The Arts Night displayed a quality of work that would rival any main event or exhibition, anywhere in the world. • The HIA (Hinterland Independent Alliance) with Hills and Kooralbyn Schools continues to grow and students are growing from the experience in this interschool competition and this year TMC won the HIA Trophy! • The Drama Dept presented “Foibles and Folly” to local primary schools and our mountain community. It has become a tradition and is an important community event. • The College Equestrian team is still going strong. Life in the “old school yard” is wonderful – trips to the snow, Versace for the Yr 12 Formal again this year, Theatre productions in Brisbane, Art Exhibitions, camps,

excursions, theme parks, recreational sports such as sailing, skating, bowling, golf; college lunchtime clubs, music and guitar lessons. Next year, students plan to take off to Europe again!!!! Tamborine Mountain College students maintain the old school values of respect, politeness and co-operation whilst embracing the new buildings and facilities for an excellent education. Mrs Melbourne concluded by saying, “The old school yard gives us lasting memories but also establishes our fibre, character, foundations for adulthood. These days, time spent at school is sometimes more than time spent at home with family. Together in partnership with our families we are forming our arrows of tomorrow into the kind of adults that will improve society and make a better world.”

8th November - Interschool Sports – Jnr Netball

Leandra Thomson, PE Teacher Two junior netball teams played four games each against St. Bernards State School and Tamborine Mountain State School. Both teams won 3 games and both lost one game each. Our teams were made up of a lot of students who had never played netball before but with lunch time and Friday afternoon training, they mastered the game well on the day. Their skill improved with each game and they all put a lot of effort in on what turned out to be a very hot day. I would like to thank Miekah Crocker’s mum Michelle and Sarah Cooper for helping with umpiring and Lucinda Collins’ mum Natalie who was our time keeper. All of the players displayed great sportsmanship and were very well behaved and helpful on the day. They were a credit to our school.

11th November - Remembrance Day

Congratulations to the Year 7 students and the Defence Family students who represented the school at the RSL Remembrance Day Service at D J Smith Park. The School Captains, Amelia Ingram and Brody Hughes, read ‘On Flander’s Fields’ and ‘For the Fallen’.

Mrs Murphy has told students if they see a storm coming soon after school to come straight back to school. If a storm hits around bell time, students will stay in their classrooms until the storm passes. Students will arrive home later than usual but more importantly, parents will know they are safe. Please call me if you have any concerns about this.

Green Team Update

By Jodie Clifford

Our gardening club/vegetable garden co-ordinator, Linda Riggs, approached Bunnings Nerang in hope of a sponsorship for gardening resources last month and the result was fantastic! Bunnings donated a variety of items for our gardening program. Thank you to Linda for her efforts and a huge thank you to Allan Brown from Bunnings Nerang for their generous contribution. The Green team hosted our last working bee for the year on Saturday 23rd November. We had over 40 participants undertaking a number of tasks with enthusiasm. Projects completed for the day were relocation of our raised vegetable garden beds, maintenance of our bush tucker garden/cultural trail, and weed removal on a riparian restoration site. Needless to say we appreciate everybody who contributed. National Recycling Week was celebrated from 11th-17th Nov and CSS invited Rachel Nasplezes from the Healthy Waterways team to do a presentation regarding waste management to upper primary years. Her viewing of an excerpt from the film ‘Bag It’ was thought

provoking and stimulated some great dialogue resulting in positive actions by students to further reduce waste. Green Team projects will enjoy a break over the festive season but we urge the Canungra community to think ‘Green’ this Christmas: • Do Kris Kringle with your loved ones to minimise consumerism

• Avoid plastic throwaway plates • Recycle Christmas cards (visit: www. plantetark.org) • Wrap gifts in environmental gift packaging materials such as recycled cardboard gift boxes, natural raffia and brown paper. • Remove sticky tape from gift wrap and recycle Have a fantastic festive season!

Every king has to fall off his castle at some point. It’s not in the nature of things that we stay in the same place forever. As you surrender your position of power, use the moment to contemplate the great cycles of life and their deep underlying meaning. The alternative is to complain.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Mars departs and leaves you pleasantly exhausted. It’s only possible to make super-efforts for so long – and then we must rest. Fortunately when it comes to practical matters, you aren’t the type to be left wondering. Your rest time will be heated up by a philosophical fire. Enjoy!

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

It’s a complicated time. Venus backtracks and stays in earthbound Capricorn. This makes you wonder if you are ever going to get your wings back. At the same time, Mars moves into Libra, bringing his muddy boots and his undiluted power. Don’t get hung up on appearances.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

At the beginning of the month there’s a ‘huge’ amount going on in Scorpio. By the end of the month there’s only ‘a lot’. This is one of those times when you are motoring through the change from caterpillar to butterfly. Nobody else quite knows what’s going on – but you do.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

This is your time of the year. The Sun is in your sign, illuminating you with good will and vitality. Mercury passes through like a slow moving meteor of pure insight. Make the most of the gifts coming your way. Keep your eyes open for the trap of grandiosity. Enjoy - watchfully.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Venus stays with you. You may have resigned yourself to her departure – but she turns around at the last moment and offers to go one step further. Love is not what we think it is. If it was, it would be as small as a thought. It’s a whole other current. Be surprised - and deepened.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

With Uranus in your midst, your ideas are not staying safe in the confines of your own cranium. They are bursting out into life and being tweaked and tested experientially. Life is helping you forge the link between earth and sky that it is your destiny to forge. It’s on for young and old.

The notion of what and where your real home is, is becoming increasingly vital. The discontent that is still there, even after all the appropriate bits and pieces have been put into place, is very important. It is your drive to find truth. It will keep niggling away until you do. Be willing. © M.J.Dean 2013

TCT’s Movie Review

Well Being at Christmas

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Reviewed by Keer Moriarty

With Clancy Beck

With Christmas fast approaching and the party/BBQ calendar filling up fast, it is often a time of over-eating, over-drinking (alcohol) and under-exercising, and we find that our first New Year’s resolution is to lose the weight we accumulated in the holidays! We want to enjoy the festive spirit, but what can we do to minimize the negative effect of all the social gorging? 1. Drink more water - simple, quick and gives us the impression of being full. Drinking 2 litres (6-8 large glasses) of water a day, and more if exercising, helps the body eliminate waste and keep the digestive system working efficiently to process the undesirable products we might be feeding it. Even slight dehydration can also cause tiredness, depression, fear, irritability and headaches none of which go well at the annual family reunion. 2. Exercise early in the day - getting the heart pumping faster for just 20-30 minutes each morning increases the metabolism and enables food to be burned off faster. If you find it hard to get motivated join up with a friend and set yourselves a xmas challenge. 3. Plenty of salads/vegetables each day will help to neutralize the acid forming meats, dairy, desserts, alcohol and coffees etc that are common over xmas, and which can cause us to feel sluggish.

Director: Francis Lawrence Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland. Rated: MA+. Run Time: 146 minutes

This is the second film in The Hunger Games series and anyone who was worried that it can’t live up to the first film can breathe a sigh of relief. A year after winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark embark on the Victor’s Tour wherein they visit all the districts. But with Panem in danger of revolution throughout the districts, President Snow tells Katniss to ensure she puts out the flames or else everyone she cares about will be in danger. When the 75th Hunger Games is celebrated with tributes selected from the previous victors of each district, Katniss and Peeta are faced with reliving the nightmare they had already struggled to survive, along with 24 other angry tributes.

Jennifer Lawrence gives an oustanding performance, which takes nothing away from the rest of the cast, which is a mix of younger actors alongside screen veterans Donald Sutherland (President Snow) and Woody Harrelson (Hamish). Although it is a long film at over two and a half hours, Catching Fire maintains the pace and interest, with plot of the novel condensed in some instances to fit into the film. The concept of reality television sent to an extreme is disturbing but not unbelievable. The violence is at times a little confronting, but not glorified. For the sake of continuity, if you haven’t already seen The Hunger Games, do so before you see Catching Fire. Or better still, read the books!

4. Minimize sugars - go easy on cakes, soft drinks, cookies, sweets, and also breads, pasta, potatoes, rice, crackers and snacks - all of which end up on the hips or waistline. If you can’t cut out all the bad stuff, just ensure you counter it with plenty of good stuff! Christmas Cooking for the Kids

With Christmas just around the corner, and kids on school holidays, here are a couple of easy recipes children will love!

Mini Cheerio Wreath Ingredients:

• 2 sheets ready rolled frozen puff pastry, defrosted • 20 Cheerios (mini frankfurts) • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 3 tbsp milk • 1 red capsicum

Method:

Preheat oven to 200°C or 180°C fan-forced. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. Using a sharp knife, slice each puff pastry sheet into 16 squares. Wrap a square of pastry around each frankfurt and join pastry together with a drop of water. Arrange on the baking tray in a circle. Mix egg and milk and brush pastry all over with egg and milk mixture. Bake for 20 minutes. Slice the capsicum at the top and bottom, remove seeds and slice to create a bow. Slide the Christmas wreath onto a serving platter and place the bow at the bottom.

• • • •

Santa Strawberries Ingredients:

1 cup thickened cream ¼ cup sifted icing sugar 2 punnets strawberries 2 soft liquorice sticks or 20 raisins

Method:

Whip cream and icing sugar together until quite firm. Hull the strawberries and cut the tip off each. Sit each strawberry on paper towel to soak up the juice. Fill a piping bag with the cream mixture and pipe it onto the cut surface of the strawberry to create a head. Using the tip of the nozzle, join the cream and pipe a liitle “beard” for the Santa halfway down the side of the strawberry. Make these join up so the cream on the head takes the weight of the cream from the beard. Place tip of strawberry on cream. Pipe a “pom pom” onto the top of the strawberry. Place liquorice or raisins for eyes and serve.

Life Words…. Watch Where You’re Going! We all know how dangerous it would be to drive along the highway while mostly looking over your shoulder. I agree it’s a ridiculous situation and yet many people live their lives in a similar way, that is, constantly looking back at ‘the good old days’ at the expense of looking at what’s ahead! Truth be known, the ‘good old days’ weren’t that good, it’s just that they offer a form of escapism from the harsh challenges being faced today! Harbouring fears, regrets and hurts of the past can rob us of the quality of life we should be enjoying today. There comes a time to draw a line in the sand and declare ‘enough is enough, from this point on, I move forward, free of the past’. Easier said than done, right! Even the apostle Paul recognised he needed more than his own will power to let go of the past. In the book of Philippians, chapter 3, verses 13 and 14 he said: “No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be, but...forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead...I strain to reach the end of the race...because of what Christ Jesus did for us.” Boldly live your life! Ask God to help you embrace today, it’s a gift, that’s why it’s called ‘the present’. The future awaits you-watch where you’re going! Blessings, Pastor Greg Tamborine Life Church 0402 662 998 www.tamborinelifechurch.org.au

New Patients Welcome

St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough, Guild President As mentioned in our November News, Sasha Gubbins was arranging a morning tea to raise funds for a new facility to be built in Brisbane for homeless women. The morning tea was a great success with $775-00 being raised for the project. Well done Sasha for taking the initiative to help those in need. The Parish has now established a Web site for up to date information regarding, the large variety of activities going on in the parish, such as service times and how to contact Rev Valerie. Information regarding Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms at either St George’s Tamborine Mountain or St Luke’s in Canungra is also on the web site. Feel free to log on to have a look. www.apotm.org.au Don’t forget our Christmas themed Street Stall will be held on Saturday 14th December outside T Bones. Lots of fresh baking and a decorated cake for the main raffle prize. Christmas is less than a month away so I hope all your plans for yourself and your family are well underway. If you would like at attend church for Christmas, St Luke’s will be holding a special service at 7.45 am Christmas morning. Wishing you all a blessed Christmas. Need Business Cards? David Huynh is chasing women (I hope I can get away with that!) to start pre-season training on 4th December and Sam Wilson is hoping to have an under 17 girls team for next year which would be terrific. Sign on will be at the end of January but we may offer an early sign on for existing players - check noticeboards at FoodWorks and our new Facebook page which Candice has kindly offered to update for us. We are still looking for some position fillers. We need a line marker for a start (about an hour a week ) with Keiran kindly offering to fill in for holidays. photos too; Sam did a magic job last year but having taken on two committee positions I think she will have enough to do! Looking forward very much to getting going again with soccer and hoping to have several coaches committing to doing a coaching course (which the Club will fund raise to pay for these) to improve structured training sessions and uniformity throughout the Club. Referees courses will also be offered with several young men already asking about that which is tremendous. Please have a think about anything you may be able to do to help as this Club has tremendous potential for health, fitness, teamship, friend making, socialising (both players and spectators )and generally a major hub in this great community we are lucky to be part of. November Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month

The November Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month is David Huynh. The Canungra Owls Women’s soccer team had an exceptional and memorable 2013 season under the guidance and coaching of David. All of the players, from the commencement of pre season last December, till the very last second of the preliminary grand final displayed a high level of commitment, courage, skill and most importantly heart. This was proven by the team’s position throughout the year, not falling below 2nd on the table and losing only 5 out of their 20 matches. Unfortunately the team fell short of a grand final birth by the barest of margins. David said, “I have coached many different sporting teams before, varying in ages but never a women’s soccer team. I didn’t know what to expect but I

knew that this first season was a foundation year and that it would take a lot of hard work to reach a grand final, let alone win one. But to come so close just showed how much the team has grown and achieved, and that nothing should be taken away from these women. I have learnt new aspects and skills that will improve my coaching and for that I am privileged and thankful. With this in mind I have decided to take on the role of head coach for the 2014 season, where the Canungra Owls Women will go …… ONE BETTER!” As the November Sportsperson of the Month, David will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra FoodWorks. Congratulations and well done David!

These Kids are True Fighters! On 7th and 8th of December four Canungra children will take part in the Australian Muaythai kick boxing championships at Tallebudgera. After four months hard training they will be going in to show what they have. Trainer Jamie (Hamma) Tozeland has dedicated his time and experience preparing the children. Hamma has trained over 50 champions in his years and is hoping to add more. Samantha Torrens (15), Cameron Torrens (14), Zak Tilley (13) and Josh Torrens (11) will head to the ring with

fellow fighter Ryan Yehle in their corner along with Azza, Dave and Hamma in support. Within the last month the kids have taken part in fight nights around the area with Zak in the ring at The Warriors of War event at the Bronco’s League Club. Zak was faced with an opponent 5kg heavier who also had four fights under his belt. Zak, with true determination, went out and gave it all he had, lost his bout on points but on strength determination and dedication he was a winner. He certainly won the crowd that night.

Two weeks later Samantha, Cameron and Ryan took part in Action 12 in the cage, a night in Toowoomba put together to raise money for Down syndrome aweness. All the kids fought strong, hard and showed great determination to win their fights, however the team came home with two losses and a draw - once again losses that in their supporters’ eyes were in fact a big win. Samantha won the title of fighter of the night and is now the proud owner of a super Punch pack.
