Community Bank Ready to Move to Next Stage

Canungra’s Community Bank® Project will enter its next phase in January 2015 when an independent consultant begins a feasibility study to closely examine the level of community support for a Community Bank® in Canungra. The steering committee behind the Canungra Community Bank® Branch campaign will appoint the consultant. Steering Committee Chair Janine Rockliff said Canungra residents and business owners had already shown support by pledging to become shareholders in the locally-owned company. “In this next stage, the consultant will be asking people a range of questions to get a full understanding of their support and commitment towards a Community Bank® branch,” Ms Rockliff said. “Potential customers and investors will have the opportunity to meet with the consultant face-to-face to discuss their individual needs and interest in supporting a locally-owned branch.” The campaign received a significant boost with neighbour Logan Community Bank® Group throwing its support behind them with $7,000 towards the feasibility study. The project’s steering committee met with the Logan Group to discuss their progress and steps going forward, with Logan’s success now putting over $200,000 annually back in to their local communities they can see the success will be mirrored in Canungra with the support already shown by locals. Janine said it is important the consultant and Bendigo Bank are provided

Ashleigh and Leigh Bartlett with Ken Hill and Janine Rockliff at Canungra Markets

with sufficient evidence that Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch has the required support from the community, including banking with the proposed branch to make it profitable. “More than $567,000 in pledges to purchase shares is a good indication that a Community Bank® branch in Canungra will be viable,” she said. Janine said the survey was confidential and neither Bendigo Bank nor committee members had access to the individual survey responses. “All the surveys will be sent directly to the consultant, who will collate the information and present it to us in a formal report,” she said.

Your lifestyle counts!

Janine said the business sector is excited about the economic stimulus Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch could provide. “Canungra Community Bank® Branch would become an important part of Canungra and, in partnership with other local businesses, could work to strengthen our community into the future.” Since the concept began more than 16 years ago, more than 306 Community Bank® branches have been established, returning more than $125 million to support local groups and projects. For more information about the Canungra Community Bank ® Branch contact Janine on 0434 238 008.

Historic Hut In The Spotlight At Lamington Ahead Of Park’s 100Th Birthday

A hut with history in every slab reopened as a museum at Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland on 29th November, as rangers and volunteers ready the park for its 100th birthday next year. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause officially opened the museum in the Foresters’ Hut, also known as Gus’s Shed, behind the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Binna Burra Information Centre, cheered on by the volunteers who put many hours into the project. “This is a great opportunity to acknowledge the incredible contribution of our Friends of Parks volunteers who have put in approximately 127 hours, plus a hefty 480 hours travelling time for the whole Friends of Parks project, to ensure that the Lamington centenary is an occasion to remember,” Mr Krause said. Mr Krause said the tallowwood slab hut would introduce park visitors to the stories of building Lamington’s worldclass walking track system, from the Depression-era work gangs of the 1930s to the present. “The hut has been refurbished and is now opened to the public as a museum

featuring a display of track construction tools and equipment, and interpretive signs,” Mr Krause said. “Gus Kouskos, who became the first walking track sub-foreman at Binna Burra in 1937 and later became the Forestry overseer, built this shed and worked from it from the 1960s till the current office was built in 1988. Over the past 10 months rangers have been working with Friends of Parks

volunteers on researching information for the signs, tracking down historic photos from the State Library of Queensland and polishing original track construction tools for the display. David and Glenis Goss provided many of the tools on display from the collection of Mrs Goss’ father Chas Cameron. What Shopping Local Can Do Families Urged to Shop Locallly

Families are being encouraged to spread the festive cheer to local small businesses and ‘Buy Locally this Festive Season.’ With less than a month to go until Christmas, Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause launched a Campaign to support small businesses and provide a boost to the region. “The Christmas season has well and truly begun and local businesses, particularly small businesses operated by the mums and dads in our region, need our support,” Mr Krause said. “Small businesses are the engine room of the Beaudesert Electorate, driving innovation, employment and economic progress. “The benefits of supporting local businesses and shopping locally cannot be underestimated. “When you shop locally, your money stays locally, with one dollar spent at a local business returning up to five times that amount through employee wages, rates and the purchase of materials and supplies.” “Many owners of these businesses are mums and dads and we want them to be able to focus on creating opportunities for their children.”

Giving to Op Shop Gives back to Community

The benefits of shopping at the Canungra Op Shop are greater than you might think. In addition to recycling clothing and household goods, providing a social hub for the volunteeers, the Op Shop also returns all of its profits to charities and community organisations. Michelle Aldridge said the Op Shop has helped the local quilters group with a roll of wadding for “care” quilts ($500), but this is only the start. “I have just paid $2,390 for the soccer club for new balls, there will be $1,000 going to the Carols night and we are going to do a donation of $1,000 on behalf of the Canungra Community for stock feed for drought farmers,” said Michelle, “There is more money earmarked for the Canungra community which will be distributed next year.” If you know somone who loves Op Shop Shopping, why not purchase a gift certificate from our local Op Shop for them for Christmas? If you are concerned about the amount of money spent on gifts that aren’t always wanted or appreciated, buying an Op Shop gift certificatesupports recycling, benefits their fund raising efforts and let’s the receiver choose something they know they’ll use. Canungra Op Shop is located at the corner of Kidston Street and Lawton Lane and is open six days a week (closed Saturday).

New Clubhouse a Boost for Canungra Area Golf Club

Canungra Area Golf Club’s new Clubhouse is open and visitors to the course will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the venue. The Club’s old Clubhouse was deemed unsafe by the Department of Defence and demolished last year, leaving the Club with few options for another Clubhouse. A grant was received from the State Government, Club member Gary Owen and other Club members began work on a new Clubhouse. After many hours of volunteer labour with everyone pitching in at working bees, the new Clubhouse is a great venue for members to relax and cool off in after a day out on the golf course. The building is well appointed inside and the bar, custom made by Gary is a feature. Canungra Area Golf Club is located on Alloah Road, Canungra. For enquiries call 5543 4640.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

G20 Follow Up

Although all the action of the G20 appeared to be in and around Brisbane, there were a great many direct benefits for us all in the Scenic Rim. In partnership with the Council of Mayors, the Mayor represented Scenic Rim at the G20 Global Cafe at Brisbane City Hall in the lead up to the summit to promote our tourism opportunities and the Bromelton State Development Area. On the menu for the international leaders was Scenic Rim beef, Kalbar carrots and Rathdowney olive oil along with the finest of regional Queensland produce. A truly spectacular event which came at no direct cost to Council.

ANZAC Centenary Project Funding

This commemorative project has received a welcome $60,000 boost from the State Government to help deliver the War Stories In Our Town initiative. The aim of this project is to collect and share stories of local significance that will broaden awareness of the social impacts of war on our communities for generations ahead.

Congratulations Year 12 Students

I would like to extend my very best wishes to you all as your formal schooling ends and a very exciting and challenging chapter of your life begins. Having caught a glimpse of many of you at your speech nights and formal celebrations, you all looked spectacular and certainly a group to feel proud of! I wish you every success in your future ventures.

Moriarty Park Lease Renewal

Congratulations to the very well respected Management Committee of Moriarty Park in Canungra, who have always upheld their management responsibilities and worked tirelessly to ensure the facility develops and improves for the community. The current lease has now been renewed for a further five years and Council sincerely appreciates their long standing commitment to the complex.

Eat Local Week Funding

The State Government has again supported this growing event of regional significance by contributing $20,000 in funding for the 2015 event. This event continues to grow each year and draws increasing numbers of visitors from outside the region as we showcase the Scenic Rim local produce.

Annual Report 2013/14

I would encourage residents to have a look at this newly adopted document, all compiled and published in house, which is a tribute to our Communications Department. The Annual Report can be viewed on Council’s website www. scenicrim.qld.gov.au and gives residents an insight into the work Council does on a yearly basis for our residents as well as for our long-term financial sustainability. I’m pleased to advise that again the Queensland Audit Office and Queensland Treasury Corporation have assessed our sustainability and fiscal position favourably.

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

All about community ... Getting towards the end of the year is always a time for reflection, and with the life busy as always I would like to thank the people who contribute to The Canungra Times (and many other things in my life). I’m a bit nervous about this because I know I will leave people out, but trust me, I still appreciate you! The regular contributors this year: Bren Dalby, David Baker, Di Ayscough, Wendy Brown, Ray Hickson, Mel Whitby, Chloe Pickard, Jodie Clifford, Robyn Corcoran (who sends in a lot of the school photos) Rayna Bond and Rebecca Torrens. These people send articles and photos because they want to contribute to their community, not because of any gain to themselves and without them The Canungra Times would be a very different publication. I would also like to thank a great group of kids who help out from time to time putting inserts in the paper and distributing them around town - Heather, Sophie, Hannah, Camden, Darcy, Sahla, Olivia, Sophia. And of course a big thank you to Julie who is always there at a moment’s notice when I realise I don’t have time to do everything! What would I do without you! Have a very happy Christmas, everyone looking forward to 2015!

QUU to Boost Canungra’s Firefighting Power

Queensland Urban Utilities is upgrading Canungra’s water network to boost the capacity to fight fires as the population increases. The Canungra Water Main Renewal project involves decommissioning sections of water pipes and replacing them with new ones. Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said a total of more than two kilometres of pipes, ranging from 150mm to 300mm in diameter, will be installed throughout the township. “The works will ensure that as the community grows, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service can continue to access a sufficient water supply in case of a fire,” she said. “The upgrade, due to be completed by June 2015, will also improve the reliability of the water network to cater for a growing population. Our crews are currently installing 550m of pipe along Coburg Rd, between Beaudesert-Nerang Rd and Lamington National Park Rd. The next job will be laying around 180m of new water pipes along the length of Franklin St.” QUU has already installed new water pipes along: Pine Street (between Finch and Jerome Sts – 570m), Appel Street (between Franklin and Tamborine Streets – 55m), Tamborine Street (125m), Kidston St (from Tamborine Street to the water reservoir – 470m).

Late October elegant ladies and equally impressively dressed men as they attended a High Tea at the Canungra Uniting Church to raise funds to provide RE books for the Canungra school. The combined efforts of the Uniting Church and St Luke’s in fund raising for these books is vital for the ongoing religious education of our children at the school. There have been special birthdays celebrated recently at St Luke’s. Our best wishes to Anne King and Irene Sim. We wish you both a great year. Congratulations to Sasha Gubbins who graduated from Tamborine College and was awarded Dux of her year. The Board members and their partners from Emmanuel College at Carrara came to visit St Luke’s and the Canungra Township recently. They enjoyed a delightful High Tea before a thanksgiving service in St Luke’s. Some of these people had never been to Canungra before and were most impressed with what they saw.

We can cater for Christmas Parties, Birthdays and Functions!

Power of Thought The single biggest deciding factor on whether a person is fit or unfit, overweight or slim, is nothing to do with body type, metabolism, genetics, environment, energy levels, or diet. It’s the thoughts you think on a daily basis! The thoughts you’ve had over the last few weeks, months and years are responsible for your current results. If you are anything other than fit, healthy and the ideal weight, it would have to be called ‘unhealthy thinking’. Our thoughts create emotions within us and it’s either a positive one or a negative one. Those emotions cause our actions, which are either towards or away from health. Being totally honest, would the majority of your thoughts around food, exercise and health be positive or negative ones? Does the thought of exercise or healthy food send forth a plethora of reasons and excuses why you can’t do it? Is your head full of “I can’t seem to lose weight, it’s too hard, I don’t have time, I’m not fit, I’m overweight, I’m too old to try that, I can’t afford it?” You’ve heard ‘if you think you can, or you think you can’t - either way you are right’. Here’s the golden key. Just as your failure thinking brought you your current results, this same power of thought (rightly directed) can also bring you fitness and health. If you are not where you’d like to be health wise, or need to lose a few kilos, tell yourself a different story and watch your results change. Thoughts like ‘I am fit and strong, I will try anything, I can master it, I am my ideal weight, I lose weight easily, there is always enough time’ etc puts your whole energy field in a different place, causing positive emotions and actions, bringing you closer to the results you desire.

Lease Renewed For Canungra’s Moriarty Park

Council has renewed the leasehold of Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Inc. over its namesake complex in Canungra for a further five years. Corporate and Community Services chair Cr Nigel Waistell said the group had successfully managed the sporting fields and associated community complex in Monarch Drive for a number of years. “The club has operated the facilities effectively and demonstrated a commitment to ensure community access to the amenities of Moriarty Park,” he said, “On the basis of their long history of stewardship, Council is continuing the leasing arrangement well into the future.” Deputy Mayor Cr Virginia West, councillor for Division 3, said the renewal of the lease provided certainty for the management group and the local community. “Moriarty Park is an important sport and recreation facility for the Canungra,” she said. “This decision is a positive outcome which reflects the great work undertaken by the leaseholders.”

Chemicals in Your Skincare - Part 3 Writing this series has opened my eyes to the chemicals in more than just my beauty products, and I have been looking at my bath, shower, and cleaning products. My cupboards are looking a bit bare! I have been researching how to make my own cleaning and home care products to start protecting the health of my family. I will be writing a few articles in 2015 with some recipes that I will be trialling. Here are the last three chemicals that you may find in your skincare or beauty products: Toluene: This is a petrochemical derived from petroleum or coal tar. It may be listed as benzene, toluol, phenylmethane or methylbenzene. Toluene is used to dissolve paint and as a paint thinner, and is a potent solvent. It has been known to irritate skin, cause nausea, and can affect your respiratory system. Pregnant women should not be exposed to the vapours as it may cause developmental damage to the foetus. Toluene may also cause immune system toxicity. It can be found in nail polish, nail treatments, and hair colour/bleaching products. Propylene Glycol: A chemical created as a side effect of petroleum refining. It can be used to help dissolve one ingredient into another to produce a solution, as a stabilizer to keep products constant at various temperatures, and as a humectant to help formulations to attract and hold onto moisture. It draws moisture from the lower layers of your skin to the top, therefore drying out the lower layers, which makes your skin appear dull and increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This chemical is a strong irritant and can cause dermatitis and hives from concentrations as low as 2%. It is found in moisturisers, sunscreen, makeup products, conditioners, shampoo, and hair sprays. Sunscreen Chemicals: The following are the unsafe, toxic chemicals in sunscreen: Para amino benzoic acid (PABA), Octyl salicyclate, Oxybenzone, Cinoxate, Dioxybenzone, Phenylbenzimidazole, Homosalate, Menthyl anthranilate, Octocrylene, Methoxycinnamate, Parabens. These chemicals absorb into the blood and release free radicals in sunlight. They act like estrogen, disrupt hormones, and can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. I recommend you use a natural sunscreen that contains zinc and titanium as they do not absorb into the skin (so they do not disrupt the bodies hormones), are not allergenic and are more effective at blocking UVA rays. It’s really difficult to avoid every single synthetic chemical, but you can try to limit the amount of toxins that you’re exposed to. Clean eating, avoiding chemical-laden processed foods, drinking plenty of filtered water, and looking for products that are certified organic are great ways to avoid toxic chemicals entering the body. Use a bit of time to research before you buy, and know that reducing chemicals in your skincare does not need to cost extra money. You have only one life to live, one body, and your skin and health will thank you! On a brighter note, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2015!

Class of 2014 FoodWorks to the Rescue! By Bren Dalby Formals are always fraught with excitement and drama...and the odd potential disaster! Scott Dalby has been a big Lamborghini fan for years and so when he called someone on carsales.com.au who was selling a gorgeous white one to ask if he could use it for the arrival at his formal with Chloe, Mum Bren was a tad nervous: “a bloke with a Lambo doesn’t need a couple of hundred bucks mate; what if he gets a better offer on the night? You’ll end up in a Barina!!) and so Scott orchestrated Plan B with Tony from FoodWorks. Bren was rapt to receive a call from Tony to say he would be delighted to help out if either she or George would be able to drive his gorgeous Jaguar - “how does it go Tony? Drive it like ya stole it!” He laughed a little nervously but still handed over the keys! George took the keys off Bren when he got home and off they went to Dreamworld. Jake did turn up with the Lambo and was terrific...however Tom Middleton and Brody Upson had last minute problems with their arrival ‘wheels’ so Tony (with George as chauffeur) was able to help those guys out with a classy ride for them and their formal partners Lara and Alex. Can’t express how much once again Tony’s generosity and big heartedness saved the day... thanks mate!

Tamborine Mountain College - Speech Night

Tamborine Mountain College has been an extremely busy place this year: Stage 3 of the Secondary Campus “The Michael Kyle Learning Centre” was opened. TMC Primary opens next year with all the ground work done and Head of Primary in place – Mr Mark Stevens. Uniform changes for next year and uniform additions to include Primary. Preparing for the introduction of Yr 7 into secondary education for next year. Yr 12 Leadership positions expanded for next year with 2015 positions announced: • College Captains – Rhys JohannsenWeston & Emily-Jane Sarroff. • College Prefects – Monty Leng, Jaz Mayne, Lacey Wood. • College House Captains – Tanita de Bruyn (Nicholls), Max Drake (Kyle), Madi McDermott (Walton). Mrs June Melbourne, the Principal, was very pleased to announce that again this year had many examples of “Victory & Valour”: Yr 12 success educationally is highlighted by guaranteed entries into university before OPs even come out . TMC Intermediate Debating Team competed in the Gold Coast Grand Final

– they are champions indeed even though they didn’t bring the trophy home. Sporting achievements have again been many. Part of the Independent Sporting Association for all the major carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics. Several of TMC students have gone onto Regional representation and even State level championships. The Arts Night displayed a quality of work that would rival any main event or exhibition, anywhere in the world. This year honoured the most outstanding Yr 12 Arts student. The HIA (Hinterland Independent Alliance) inter-school sport with Hills and Kooralbyn schools continues to grow with the addition of Primary next year. TMC Drama Dept presented “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” to our mountain community. A Play with an excellent message for all. Leo Club has been re-born with SRC laying a strong foundation for its growth. European Trip – an opportunity to widen horizons and explore new regions. The College Equestrian team continues to grow. Next year TMC is introducing an “Excellence Program” in Drama/Arts and also Sport. This is available to Senior

Tamborine Mountain College students at Speech Night

students on a Friday whereby those with this love/passion will be able to immerse themselves. TMC Arts Night will run over two nights next year - one night for the juniors and one for the seniors. House Sporting Captains will also be directly involved in sport with the Primary which is timetabled on Fridays after lunch. In 2015 the College celebrates 20 Years since it opened its doors in 1995 at the Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds, with only 16 students. It is remarkable that the College will also celebrate the opening of Primary, with over 100 students – these numbers built on trust and reputation. The 20 Year Event is locked in for Saturday

21st February. A Formal ceremony at 12 noon with fun and activities in a fete-like environment, whereby the whole community is welcome. A Reunion Party for past students is also envisaged, running into the night. Mrs Melbourne thanked College Chairman, Mr Michael Kyle, and TMC Board for their time and efforts this year, as well as her entire staff and P&F. A special tribute was given to Prof Jack Walton, Foundation Board Director (1995), who at 90 years could not attend and passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday night 23rd Nov. Vale Prof Walton.

Under 8s Are Premiers!

By Kelly Street

The Canungra Under 8’s touch football team came first in the Beaudesert Touch football premiership. It was the first year of playing for all team members and a great job by coaches Belinda Honeycombe and Rick Salusbury. The Grant Final was a close grand final game, they drew three all but on a count back they scored first so took out first place. Three quarters of the players also play for the Canungra Owls soccer teams. Congratulations to the players, coaches and families!

Green Team News

By Jodie Clifford, Canungra State School Green Team greenteamcss@gmail.com

A sense of community is what I feel when I am undertaking Green Team projects. Surrounded by Canungra families who care about their kids, their school and their local environment makes me appreciate our lovely part of the world even more. Canungra people care - most of them care a lot. Unfortunately there are a few who remain careless, thoughtless and act without consideration by wilfulling damaging community projects that have been nourished by volunteers – from toddlers to grandparents. Thankfully, the overnight vandalism to our vegetable garden beds by thoughtless individuals was swiftly cleaned up by caring individuals. Thank you on behalf of the Green Team. Our 15th November working bee was another success with over 30 volunteers working to plant, mulch and water their way to cleaner, greener school grounds that will provide lush surroundings for students and teachers to enjoy. Everyone enjoyed a sausage sizzle kindly donated by Foodworks on completion of works and celebrated our last Working Bee for 2014!

The Green Team annual Thank You morning tea was held on Thursday 27th November and well attended by supporters and volunteers alike. Everyone enjoyed freshly made morning tea featuring produce from our vegie gardens. A pictorial presentation highlighting the achievements and projects of 2014 was also shown. I included creek restoration site comparisons from 2009 when my daughter was in grade 1, to this year –her last year of primary schooling. Officially I will not be a parent at CSS for another few years but am excited with the future projects that the Green Team will continue to promote. Our volunteer mums are amazing with a diverse range of skills and interests that will continue to inspire everyone involved! A heartfelt thanks to you all! The Green Team know it but for the greater Canungra community – remember – ‘It’s Cool 2B Green!’

AWL Pets of the Month

Brea is a giant goof ball who would love someone who can handle a bit of ruff and tumble and look after a girl as full of life as she is. She loves to play with other dogs just as much as she loves attention from her human friends, so she would do great with a fur brother or sister to run around with in the backyard. She walks beautifully on a loose leash, right by your side and doesn’t pull. A gorgeous natured girl - very soft and gentle. Sweet girl Galaxy has spent her life in and out of the AWLQ rehoming centre through no fault of her own. She is waiting to meet her forever family at our Gold Coast Rehoming Centre at Coombabah. Her new owners will need to understand that while she is a very loving kitty, she is quite independent and prefers hanging around other kitties over humans. Galaxy is 11 months old and a Domestic Short Haired cat. To meet Brea, Galaxy or any of the other cats, dogs, chickens, and guinea pigs available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

Nature’s Gems Banded Lapwing (Vanellus tricolor)

By Melissa Whitby In my travels throughout Australia, there are some bird species that I have only observed a handful of times in the wild. One such bird is the Banded Lapwing. This unusual bird is also known as the Banded Plover. These birds are easily recognised by a black head cap, white eye line and red marking at the beginning of the beak. Male & female birds have very similar plumage. The Banded Lapwing may be mistaken for similar species such as the Red-kneed Dotterel & Black-fronted Dotterel. However, the Banded Lapwing is much larger in size than the Red-kneed Dotterel & Black-fronted Dotterel and has yellow eyes. Banded Lapwings are often seen in localities that have extensive open ground. Suitable habitats include gibber plains, open plains and areas with short grass. These birds can be seen in pairs or small groups. The breeding season for Banded Lapwing extends from June to October. Nesting may occur at other times of the year after rain and birds are very protective in the vicinity of their nest. The

nest is a scrape in the ground and 3-4 eggs can be laid. The range of the Banded Lapwing extends throughout Australia. Throughout this range, the birds have a patchy distribution. For anyone wishing to encounter this bird, I would suggest doing some research amongst other birdwatchers. Most of my sightings of this bird species have been in western Queensland. However, I have observed Banded Lapwings in small flocks in the near vicinity of Warwick. The Banded Lapwing is a bird species that many people are not familiar. However, when encountered for the first time, this striking bird is well-worth observing in the wild.

By travelling to places that are different and distant, our perceptions of the world are inevitably broadened. There is some adventuring to be done now, before you pick up your toolkit again. Life is likely to insist that you move, if you don’t make the move yourself. The key is expansion.

As Mars shifts from Capricorn to Aquarius, so you move from feeling constricted and repressed, to feeling like you have freedom, wings and permission. Unorthodox moves are suddenly brilliant moves. They are no longer an assault on the status quo. They are regenerative and alive.

The luminary Sun, along with Mercury, are both in Sagittarius. This is your opposite. Where you are a butterfly dancing from one leaf to another, Sagittarius is a horse, galloping with some force, from a to b. This is a significant challenge. Saddle up your most soulful intention and ride.

The Sun and Moon are filling you with passion. You are a crab on a hot tin roof, scuttling here and there, with no obvious place of rest. Rest will come – and indeed greater strength and contentment – but it is whilst you are dancing in discomfort that your soul is being tempered.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

As the Sun makes his way through Sagittarius, so your passion turns towards understanding what makes things tick. This is not to understand the technical machinations of things; it’s to understand the meaning and significance of things. Investigate a few different perspectives.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Down 1 Pool side cabin 2 Harmful, noxious 3 Esceedlingly intensive 4 A fall in pitch of the voice 5 Shrubs with fragrant flowers 6 Wildly profuse 7 The act of turning inside out 8 Shrub with cone shaped flowers 14 Between nine and eleven 16 Splendour 17 Introduction 19 Strong leather walking shoes 20 Succeed as an heir 21 An armed bandit 22 Applauded 23 Motion picture theatre 24 Be present at

Before you get practical, you must get philosophical. Unless you are going in the direction of your soul’s truth, your action won’t have any power. The Virgo habit is to be so caught in doing, that important times of pondering get waylaid. Take time out and consider your direction.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

The great trap of being associated with an archetypal pair of scales, is that you can get caught in procrastination. The last thing you need, is to be neither one thing or another. The Sun and Venus are passing through Sagittarius. You’ll be called to know what’s in your belly and follow it.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

It is in the awareness of difficult things, that we can be inspired to look for meaning and significance. For this reason, it is important to be able to feel, and to be willing to confront life as it is. The passing of the Sagittarian Sun, is a chance to ponder what’s beneath the surface.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Mercury, the Sun and Venus, are all passing through Sagittarius. This is a golden opportunity to ride the gift of cosmic momentum. Mercury is a wild horse that needs steering. He is your insight. The Sun is your vitality itself. Be unafraid to express it. And Venus of course, is love.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Canungra Rainfall - November 2014

Mars leaves you alone in a week. If you have any heavy lifting to do, do it now, while you have the energy. Once he’s gone, your energy will mellow out. You will be less jumpy and reactive. With the Sun in Sagittarius, focus on your motives. Healthy motive equals healthy action.

Merry Christmas from The Canungra Times

Mars arrives in Aquarius in a week. The moment he comes, you’ll have energy to burn. Mars energy has to be used. It has to be worked, or exercised, or else it gets antsy. If you have a choice between doing something you love, or putting it off, do it – and you’ll soon be celebrating.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Though the Sun and various other powerful planets are passing through fiery Sagittarius, you are more inspired than dismayed. Fire can make a fish shoot down into the darkest depths. In the case of Sagittarius though, it warms you and brings a sense of honesty, expansion and openness.

By Bren Dalby

Well, nothing much to report on the soccer front, except that our AGM will be on Monday 15th December at 7pm at Moriarty Park. I am hoping for a good turn out and have nominations for most committee executive which is wonderful. I would love to see more parent participation and a few more people taking on small roles - no pressure though! If that’s not your ‘ cup of tea’, we are happy to have you roll up on Saturday mornings to cheer your team on! Moriarty Park have the facility to run a social netball club and would like to hear from anyone who is interested. We would also be looking for some people who actually know the rules and how to play - if you think it’s a go-er please contact us: Bren on 0414 435 919 or Shona on 0414 676 787. Page 36

Keeping it in the Family at Lawn Bowls By Louise Head, www.mastersgames.com.au Article reproduced with permission

The mixed fours competition at the Masters Games lawn bowls was a family affair for the Hickson family. Stephen and Karen Hickson have travelled up from Melbourne for their second Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games to participate in lawn bowls with Stephen’s parents Peter and Ray Hickson. “We’ve come up for the last two, just to play bowls with Mum and Dad,” Stephen said. Although the family is taking their lawn bowls competition seriously, Stephen admitted spending time with his family was the highlight. “We just come up to play as a family team,” Stephen said. The Hicksons have a busy playing schedule during the lawn bowls competition entering several events. “We played in mixed pairs yesterday and the mixed fours today and then Mum, my wife and I will play in the triples,” Stephen said. Stephen’s parents Peter, 83 and Ray, 80 have been playing lawn bowls for many years and relish the chance to play with their family. “We’re both over 80 and still playing bowls,” Ray stated. “We’re here to take part, that’s the main thing.”

Hayden Irvine

FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month - December

The FoodWorks Sportsperson for December is Hayden Irvine. Hayden is another local super all rounder athlete who has achieved tremendously in 2014 and indeed previously. He particularly shines on the soccer field and this year made the Mudgeeraba JPL (Junior Premier League) Under 12 team and as co -captain led that team to the semi finals. As well as this Hayden played in the Districts School Soccer team and held a prestigious position in the Gold Coast North Soccer team. As with a lot of good soccer players Hayden is a champion Cross Country runner, competing at District level with admirable result. Discus is an event in which Hayden has also achieved great results qualifying thru District to Regional level and on to Queensland State Titles in October, placing 11th with a Personal Best of 34.93m (I can hardly run that far never mind throw a discus these days). Hayden is House Captain for his school and has recently been accepted into a Sports Excellence Program at Helensvale State High School. This extremely polite and respectful young man is a pleasure to be around and will go far I am sure. His family are very sports and community orientated and Hayden is a credit to them and to himself. Second Siam Cup Has a True Thai Flavour By Rebecca Torrens

On 15th November Canungra hosted the second Siam cup Muay Thai event. With a huge turn out of fighters and trainers from around Queenlsand it was a day to remember. As the crowds filled the show grounds for this Junior only event the heat soared and the fights went on. The fight card was filled with up and coming Muay Thai stars including several Australian champions. Both our local Hammer Muay Thai Aussie champions got back into the ring only weeks after their title fights and once again came home with wins. Congratulations to Zak Tilley and Joshua Torrens, you are surely showing what you guys are made of. Cameron Torrens stepped up as main event for the day and had a huge fight against a tough opponent. Unfortunately he didn’t have a win this time but both boys gave the home crowd an awesome display of what Muay Thai is about. Siam Cup is rapidly becoming the talk of Muay Thai with trainers and gyms from all over Australia signing up to host a show in their home towns. This event gives the stars of the future an opportunity to get in the ring and have a go. All with the Siam belt on the line they are a keen bunch of kids. With all fighters under the age of 17 its a show of non stop action. The show has been praised by all the gyms that attended that day and Canungra show grounds has become a talking point within the sport with big raps

on what a fantastic venue it is. It has the true “Thai” feel about it. During the day raffles and auctions took place to raise money for Little Miracles hospital fund. These funds will be proudly donated after the next Siam cup takes place - hosted by Warrior Muay Thai in Caboolture on 14th December where more money will be raised. During this day local Hammer fighter Sam “Jowhing” Torrens will be the main event and fighting for a QLD title. We wish her luck and hope she can bring this belt home to Canungra. Hammer Muay Thai would like to thank all their sponsors who made this day possible as well as all the people who

turned up to support the day. It was great to see so many local faces in the crowd who had come out to support our fighters as well as the usual Muay Thai family crowd. Also a big thank you to all the helping hands that went into organising this day without everyones support the show would not go on, its truly amazing to see everyone get together and pull off such a fantastic local day out. Keep your eyes peeled into next year for the next local Siam cup they are getting bigger and better and its a great family day out not to be missed. Merry Christmas and Happy new year From Hammer Muay Thai, have a safe and happy holiday.
