Canungra Home to Australian Champion By Rebecca Torrens

Canungra now has an Australian Mauy Thai Junior Champion, Joshua Torrens as well as three runner ups who call the town home. On 7th and 8th December, The Hamma Gym headed to Tallebudgera for the largest Muay Thai competition in Australia with outstanding results. Two weeks out from the competition trainer Jamie Tozeland decided his students were ready to take part, however this meant only two weeks of intense training fully padded up as none of them had fought carrying the weight of pads before. Some of the kids desperately shed a few kilos to make a lower weight division to give them a stronger chance and prevent them from coming up against fighters four kilos heavier. Samantha Torrens (girls 15-17yr 60kg), Cameron Torrens (boys 12-14yr 60kg), Zak Tilley (boys 12-14 yrs 45kg) and Joshua Torrens (boys 10-11 yrs 45kg) all weighed in under weight on the Saturday morning ready to take part. Joshua was first to hit the finals ring.

Samantha Torrens with Jamie Tozeland

He fought his hardest and took out the Australian Championship for his age and weight division. Due to opponents pulling out on him in previous fights this was also the first time Joshua had stepped in the ring, so through nerves and fear of the unknown he did an amazing job. He has done the gym proud and now has the opportunity to head to Langkawi (Malaysia) in May to fight for the World Junior Championship. Cameron and Zak stepped up in the ring giving it their all in their modified Thai rules bouts. The both took home

silver medals, missing gold by only a point or two. This is a huge achievment that the pair of them should be proud of as are the other the gym members and its supporters. Samantha was faced with her first ever full Thai rules fight - she was up against head kicks and elbows which she had never faced before. Her finals fight was a tough one against an opponent with 13 years experience and a trainer of her own gym. She too did everyone proud and returned home as a silver medalist. All these kids, as well as fellow fighter Ryan Yehle who was out with injury at the time, have a big year lined up ahead of them with fights booked in during the year and some serious training to be done. Parents of the fighters would like to thank the supporters and sponsors of the gym and the kids as without them none of this would be possible. They also thanked Jamie Tozeland for putting in the time and effort he does giving them all the best start in their fighting careers.

More Police for Canungra Station

Canungra Police Station will increase its staff to eight officers over the next month when officers Constable Lindsay Evans, Constable Samantha Hill and Sergeant Craig Robert commence duties. Sergeant Craig replaces long serving police Sergeant Ken Josling who retired at the end of 2013 after 33 years in the police force - 11 of those in Canungra. Craig has spent time in the force in Herberton in the Atherton Tablelands and at Wujal Wujal Police Station. The increase in officers will enable Canungra to be staffed for up to 20 hours per day. Acting Sergeant Ben Sawden said Beaudesert and Jimboomba police will answer calls after hours. “Even if there is no-one at the station, people should phone and police from Beaudesert or Jimboomba will attend to calls as

soon as possible,” he said. The main issues police have been dealing with in the town are traffic infringements, vandalism and graffiti, said Ben. “We have to continue to police traffic infringements such as speeding and DUI,” he said. “We also need people to contact us if they see something suspicious or if they see people in the act of vandalising or graffitiing. Callers can stay anonymous, but it is more helpful if they are willing to make a statement so that we can take action against the perpetrators.” Constable Samantha Hill was adopted by Canungra State School in the ‘Adopt a Cop’ program and will spend time at the school to develop a rapport with the staff and students. To contact Canungra Police Station, phone 5543 5120.

Prevention The Buzz On Mosquitoes

Mozzies are as much a part of the Queensland summers as hot, humid days and afternoon storms. It is these prevailing weather conditions that can create an ideal breeding environment around the home for unwary residents. For residents living on acreage, improperly sealed water tanks and household sewerage facilities can also provide an unwanted breeding ground. Visit www.health.qld.gov.au\mozziediseases to find out more about mosquito-borne diseases.

Lamington National Park History Project Awarded Grant

A project to showcase Lamington National Park’s history has been boosted by $22,700 as part of a Stae Government grant program awarded. The $500,000 Friends of Parks initiative offers grants of between $5000 and $25,000 to not for profit community groups as part of the State Government’s commitment to enhance volunteering and “voluntourism” in Queensland’s national parks. Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause congratulated the Green Mountains Natural History Association Inc, one of 31 organisations to be awarded funding totalling $503,350. “With Lamington National Park’s centenary in 2015, the Green Mountains Natural History Association’s long standing and committed volunteers are working to re-open some historically important sites in the park and to highlight images

and recollections of the past 100 years,” Mr Krause said. “How fortunate we were to have had Robert Collins in our midst in the early days of settlement. Together he and Romeo Lahey were determined in their efforts to preserve this pristine wilderness area for future generations. Their efforts were brought to fruition in 1915 with the declaration of Lamington National Park.” Successful applicants applied from across Queensland, with 16 in the southeast, nine in the Great Barrier Reef region and seven across central and north Queensland. Approved projects will begin within three months and be delivered over 12 months. For more information about the Friends of Parks initiative and opportunities to volunteer for parks, visit www.nprsr. qld.gov.au/about/employment/ volunteering/friends-of-parks.

Chef Ricky Muir is set to take Canungra RSL Services Club into an new era. Formerly of Belvedere’s Restaurant on Tamborine Mountain, Ricky has been in the hospitality industry since he was only 12 years old, starting in the kitchens of his parents’ hotels in New Zealand. His passion for food is evident by the care he takes from selecting the highest quality ingredients for all meals to making all sauces and desserts on site.

“It is something I was always going to do,” said Ricky, “I’ve never wanted to do anything else.” Ricky has impressed partons at the Club with the quality of the a-lacarte meals already, with one diner declaring it was the “best meal I’ve had at the RSL in six years”. The Club’s restaurant is open for a la carte dining Wednesday to Saturday evenings and lunches Thursday to Sunday. Bookings are advisable and can be made by phoning 5543 5532.

Campers at Spring Gully Stays were preparing for the fifth annual ‘make your own boat’ regatta held on New Year’s Day with home made boats sailed down Canungra Creek. The event has become something all the campers look forward to at this time of year with people travelling from around South-East Queensland for the event. Campers are not allowed to bring any materials in specifically to make

their boats, they have to recycle materials used during their stay. The campers said adults and children alike get involved in the race, jumping in the creek to help the boats along. Vietnam Veterans

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

It’s all about community On Australia Day last year, we experience storms and flooding which cut roads and left many homes without phones, electricity and running water for up to seven days. What struck me about this was the number of people who were prepared to help others at this time. People who lent generators to people they didn’t know, offered to charge mobile phones, businesses who offered their fridges to people who needed to keep medication cold and let people use their phones to call loved ones and let them know they were safe. Canungra is a town that pulls together when times get tough. It is a town that raised money for lights at the sports ground, for families struggling with illness, a town that is working towards getting its own bank which will in turn put profits back into the community. This year, get involved in a community organisation - mow the grass at Moriarty Park, volunteer at the Op Shop, join the Rural Fire Brigade. If you only have a few hours spare each month there is still something you can do. In a society where the emphasis is on what you can get out of something, we are often surprised to find that what we give is returned in unexpected ways. In the end, you reap what you sow.

Dear Sir/Madam, During the Anzac weekend from 24th to 28th April 2014, we are holding a veterans’ reunion in Mildura, Victoria. This reunion is for members and the wives and children of members since passed on that served with Headquarter Company 1st Australian Support Group, Vung Tau South Vietnam from 1966 to 1972. This reunion is significant in that it is the first time we have marched

Be Prepared

Dear Editor, Queenslanders know all too well the heartbreak caused by disasters large or small. As we have seen with the recent bushfires in NSW, they can strike at any time. With so many people still recovering from the effects of floods, fires and cyclones in the last few years, Red Cross is working hard to support as many people as we can to be prepared not only for floods, but any emergency or disaster event which could catch you off guard. Each year disasters affect thousands of people across Queensland. Lives are lost and disrupted, people injured, jobs affected, significant damage caused to homes and property, and communities can be fractured.

under our own banner and the two remaining company flags that were brought back from Vietnam in 1972 when the conflict had ended. Mildura RSL Club has asked us to lead the march on ANZAC Day, which is an honour in itself. For details on the reunion please contact me on 03 5021 2066, mobile 0428 852 736 or email tonyraye11@ bigpond.com. Tony Brown (reunion organiser)

A little bit of preparedness goes a long way. When making your emergency plan, don’t overlook cherished items like your photos, special gifts, mementoes or the kids’ favourite toys. Take some time to identify beloved belongings, what they mean to you and take steps to protect them. Then tell your family and friends. Find out what the risks are in your community, download an emergency REDiplan from Red Cross and work through it with your family, get an emergency kit and get to know your neighbours. AWL Pets of the Month Nature’s Gems

Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae) By Melissa Whitby Australia is home to an array of extraordinary wildlife. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to observe many Australian wildlife species in the wild. Some of the more common species are the ones that fascinate me the most. One such creature is the Australasian Grebe. This aquatic bird is best recognized by its small size and ability to ‘dive’ under water when disturbed. The breeding plumage of this bird consists of a black head cap, yellow face patch and brown neck patch which makes it relatively easy to identify. Nonbreeding plumage consists of buffybrown and white feather colouring. This bird is also known as the Little Grebe. The Australasian Grebe has a range that extends throughout Australia. Suitable freshwater environs with water plants such as wetlands, swamps and farm dams are typical haunts of the Australasian Grebe. This bird is usually seen in pairs or on its own. Much of their time is spending feeding on the water surface and diving. The Australasian Grebe can breed from August to December. The nest is made from water plants which floats and is anchored to restrict movement. Territorial pairs

Page 16

will defend their home territory diligently again other grebes. Similar species to the Australasian Grebe is the Hoary-headed Grebe. The Hoary-headed Grebe is a slightly bigger bird with streaked grey feathers on the head. Australasian Grebes are great birds for beginner birdwatchers. They are usually easy to find and can be observed from close quarters. Most freshwater ponds between Canungra and Beaudesert have been home to an Australasian Grebe at one time or another. As mentioned, the Australasian Grebe is a common species and I hope that this small bird continues to flourish throughout Australia.

Benny is an 18 month old domestic medium hair cross. He is a wonderful boy who needs a home where he will have a lot of love. Benny is $120 and is vaccinated, desexed and microchipped.

Bearre is a friendly boy who loves his human companions. He also loves food but he really wants to lose a couple of kilos! He is active, sweet and walks well on a leash. Bearre is a five year old Australian Cattle dog x Staffy and travels well in the car. He is very clever and it also toilet trained. Bearre is $240 and is vaccinated, desexed and microchipped. To meet Benny or , contact the Gold Coast Rehoming Centre to see if they he is still available, or visit the AWL web site. Australasian Grebe

Green Team Plans for 2014

By Jodie Clifford, greenteamcss@gmail.com

Canungra State School Green Team would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2014. A new year brings a range of new possibilities with it. Many people like to set goals or make resolutions for the year ahead. CSS Green Team aim to ensure the local state school and greater community lessen their impact on our environment through a range of practical actions. Some of the great activities we will promote throughout 2014 include: • Clean Up Australia Day - 2nd Mar • Ride to School Day -19th Mar • Harmony Day – 21st Mar • Earth Hour – 29th Mar • National Volunteers Week – 6-13th Apr • World Environment Day – 5th June • NAIDOC Week – 6-13th July • National Tree Day – 27th July • Keep Australia Beautiful Week – 19-25th Aug • National Recycling Week -10-16th Nov With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. While it might be a challenge to coordinate everyone’s schedules, volunteering as a family has many worthwhile benefits. Children watch everything you do. By giving back to the community, you show them firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help others and enact change. Volunteering can also help protect your mental and physical health. Why not aim to make 2014 the year that your family partakes in a Green Team project? Your kid’s will thank, your local environment will become increasingly resilient and you may suprise yourself with how worthwhile you feel having contributed to the fantastic community of Canungra! 2014 - Keep it Simple!

Students Investigate School Power Outages By Michelle Plant, Science Operations Officer Tamborine Mountain State High School

2013 was an interesting year for Tamborine Mountain State High School’s Year 10 Extension Science class who worked on “Project Power Up”. Following several power outages in 2012 and 2013, the class researched requirements for an off grid power system for a section of the school. Students were engaged with a range of extended learning opportunities, such as project management; funding and grant applications; through to investigations of current renewable energy technologies and design of a suitable system based on the load requirements of the block. Equipment grants from the Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC) made it possible to achieve the first phase of the project, which was to obtain an emergency generator for one block’s bathroom facilities. With quotes for the off grid system coming in higher than budgeted, the class was not able to

implement the second phase of the project. However, a second grant was targeted at another high priority area for updated data collection technology. The Year 10 class unpacked the first delivery of Vernier LabQuest equipment which has already been used in trial experiments. The technology upgrade will be used by all year levels from 2014 and will provide a seamless transition for senior science students moving to University standard technologies into the future. An additional Environmental grant, also from SRRC, supported this class and Year 11 Physics students attending an excursion to Toohey Forest Environmental Centre. Students engaged in a specialised program to gain in depth knowledge of renewable energy sources, sustainable buildings, and were given a special presentation by Associate Professor with the School of Engineering at Griffith University, Steven O’Keefe.

The Sun is moving through Capricorn. On the surface this is likely to bode a time of hard-knuckle productivity. On another level, the scaffolding is being built to house deeper celebration and happiness. Don’t put life off for the future. Dig in and create what you want right now.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

The focus for Virgo is truth. We all suffer from truth deprivation. For some strange reason truth is feared. Reactivity is not truth. Truth is a gentle, powerful wind, that brings us home to who we really are. This is a contemplative moment. Keep part of yourself aside for pondering.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Mars is powering his way through Libra. He is bringing all your scattered forces together and pointing them in a decisive direction. Integrate yourself around the strongest of your creative wishes. You have plenty of power on your side. Use the energy that life is presently giving.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

Life is stalling habitual friendships. Habit is not solid ground for relationships that matter. In the stalling there’s an invitation to figure out what’s essential and what’s not. When you spot a person who is essential in your life, feed them with lots of love. Bring them into the foreground.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

With Jupiter in Cancer, it is a strange time for centaurs. Cancer is all about the home, the hearth, chicken soup and a mother’s love. Centaurs are generally about travel, educational adventurousness and joyous exotica. Bringing these two together will be no mean feat.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

There are four planets presently in Capricorn. That’s a lot of celestial action going out there in your barn. Life has been taking you through it for sure. Here’s where you get to dust yourself off and find the beauty and significance of the changes that have happened. Apply self-love.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Before the phoenix gets to fly out unscathed, there has to be fire. You are invariably on some kind of a transformative path. You can’t help yourself. The adventure simply has to be lived. As life grounds you and grinds you, so the perfume of your essence is released. Trust life’s process.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

With four planets in hardy, laconic Capricorn, it feels like life is being a good, steady daddy - and looking after you. This frees you up to dance and play. TCT’s DVD Review

Well Being

Searching for Sugar Man

Spice for Life

Director: Malik Bendjelloul. Stars: Rodriguez, Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman, Dennis Coffey. Rated: PG-13. Run Time: 86 minutes.

With Clancy Beck

For an easy way to improve your health in 2014, take a look in your pantry for a few natural ingredients that will work wonders when added to your diet. Cinnamon - contains a chemical that mimics the hormone insulin, helping you to use sugars correctly for energy and prevent inflammation and weight gain. This chemical stimulates the production of glycogen which reduces cravings for aging and fattening refined sugars. It kills microbes and yeast that upset digestion and immunity, and also has been shown to improve brain reactions and memory. A teaspoon of cinnamon has the same anti-aging antioxidant power as half a cup of blueberries. Turmeric - has long been used in Chinese and Indian medicine as a remedy for joint problems, digestive problems and liver complaints. Indian levels of heart disease, arthritis and cancers are much lower than in the West, probably due to the enormous amounts of turmeric in the Indian diet. Turmeric also contains cholesterol-lowering properties that promote optimal heart and brain function, and is antiseptic and antibacterial to aid with healing and youthful immunity. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been shown to help prevent multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, ulcers, skin complaints, carpel tunnel syndrome and most digestive disorders. The Mustard seed is an excellent source of nutrients, has the ability to stimulate circulation and helps prevent cancerous growths - especially hormone-related prostate and breast cancer. It is beneficial for the gut wall and digestive system and aids in removing toxins, bacteria and viruses. Being a high source of selenium, it is a potent antioxidant that keeps skin looking young, its anti-inflammatory properties helping with smooth, blemish-free skin and supple joints. Why not spice up 2014 by adding some spices into your diet, and get healthy the natural way!

Searching for Sugar Man details the efforts of two South African fans in the late 1990s, Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out what happened to the legendary 1970s musician Sixto Rodriguez who was rumoured to have committed suicide on stage. Their quest to find information about Rodriguez is an intriguing story which gives some insight into the American music industry and its treatment of a humble, hard working man. The DVD includes outakes of the making of Searching for Sugar

Man, which are essential viewing. In fact, I found the story of the film’s director, Malik Bendjelloul and how he managed to finish the film as heartening as the documentary itself. In 2013, the film won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary at the 66th British Academy Film Awards and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards in Hollywood. Searching for Sugar Man is proof that the most amazing stories are based in real life.

Searching for Sugar Man - a powerful documentary about 70’s musician Rodriguez

Life Words….

We all need friends! It takes on-going intentional investment of our time and focus to keep our valued friendships in good shape. This is known as ‘relationship.’ We understand the necessity of relationship with our friends, so why do we treat God any different? I’ll guess that you never went to a good friend and said “I’d like to have religion with you!” Of course not! They’d think you were a little strange! When God is discussed often people utter the usual conversation stopper: “I don’t like religion!” Let me state the obvious – God wants relationship, NOT religion! If religion conjures up images of stained glass windows, old buildings, rule keeping or an old bearded man in the clouds, taking aim at naughty sinners with lightning bolts it’s time for a re-think! Before Jesus entered human history 2000 years ago, the ancient Israelites were too scared to speak God’s name in case they mispronounced it and offended Him! It took Jesus (God in human form) to reveal God by voluntarily allowing Himself to be sacrificed in order to destroy the power of sin and death. He made it possible for humans to have relationship with God! Now that’s what I call ‘intentional investment’! The question is: Do you want to have relationship with God? Don’t like religion? Great! Religious leaders had Jesus crucified, but He rose to life again desiring to have relationship with you! Can you relate to that? Blessings Pastor Greg, www.tamborinelifechurch.org.au

Gold Coast Broadwater, Why Wouldn’t You?

By Kellie Morrisey

Many people travel to the Gold Coast for theme parks, nightclubs, car races - I could go on but for a lot of Gold Coast locals like me it is about spending time out on the water, not just the main beaches but the Gold Coast Broadwater. There is no need to spend thousands of dollars on flights when you have such beauty at your doorstep. You can hire a BBQ pontoon for the day or better yet a houseboat for a week or more all year round. The fact that they are self-contained is a huge plus. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t driven a boat before, they practically drive themselves and if you don’t have a boat licence, no worries, you don’t need one. You just need a map and to be a little adventurous. With so many companies to choose from you are spoilt for choice. From luxury to budget, there is something for everyone. Where you can go in a boat on the Gold Coast Broadwater is quite surprising. You can park by the Broadwater Parklands at Southport and take the kids across where they can play in the state of the art playground or swim in the man made rock pools. Park at the Northern end of Wavebreak Island with water so clear you can see all the way to the bottom, seeing pods of dolphins swim by daily. Heading north you can stop at Tipplers Licensed Café where you

A houseboat on the Broadwater is a great option for holidays.

can anchor for the night, have a drink and watch a band. You can even take houseboats all the way up to the slipping sands (don’t forget your cardboard box for sliding), with many anchorages and fishing spots along the way. Stop for a surf at Stradbroke Island and during the week you may even have some places to yourself. So if you are wanting to go on holidays, whether its with family or with a group of mates, get out on the Broadwater, throw out a line, get the wind in your hair and live like a local. As I said, “Why wouldn’t you?”

Ham and Potato Cakes with Rocket Pesto

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Ingredients:

800g desiree potatoes, peeled, chopped 1 tbs wholegrain mustard 2 tbs chopped chives 1 egg, lightly beaten 150g leftover Christmas ham, roughly torn 2 tbs plain flour Sunflower oil, to shallow-fry 1 bunch rocket 1 tbs toasted pine nuts 1 preserved lemon quarter, flesh and white pith removed, rind finely chopped Wild rocket pesto 60g wild rocket 2 tbs toasted pine nuts 1/4 cup chopped chives Juice of 1 lemon, plus wedges to serve 100ml extra virgin olive oil

Method:

Place potato in a saucepan of cold, salted water, bring to the boil, then cook over mediumhigh heat for 10-12 minutes until tender. Drain and cool. Meanwhile, for the pesto, place rocket, pine nuts, chives and lemon juice in a small food processor and whiz to combine. With the motor running, add the oil in a slow, steady stream until a coarse pesto. Season and set aside. Transfer the potato to a bowl and roughly mash with a fork or potato masher. Add the mustard, chives and beaten egg. Season with salt and pepper and stir to combine. Fold through the ham. With damp hands, form the potato mixture into 18 even patties, about 2cm thick. Lightly dust in flour. Add 2cm oil to a frypan and place over medium heat. In batches, cook potato cakes for 2 minutes each side or until golden and warmed through. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towel. Toss the rocket with the pine nuts and preserved lemon rind, then serve with potato cakes, rocket pesto and lemon wedges.

St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough, Guild President Thank you to all the lovely people from Canungra who supported our recent Street Stall. It was a huge success and all money raised goes to maintain the building of St Luke’s. As you can imagine a building that is 77 years old take a little bit of TLC to keep it in good order and repair. The major raffle prize was won by Dawn Page. Our thanks also to Tony at T Bone’s Butchery for allowing us to set up our stall in front of his shop. Anne and John King have returned after an extended caravan trip to South Australia, although they were pleased to return home to the beautiful township of Canungra. St Luke’s congregation enjoyed a lovely Christmas luncheon hosted by Bill, Sonya and Sasha Gubbins. With the New Year now here I encourage anyone who is new to town, or anyone who would like to join us at St Luke’s to come along any Sunday at 7.45am. You would be made most welcome. Our calendar of social events in 2014 is already filling fast ! May God Bless you in 2014.

Trevor Shoots for the Stars

At 16 years of age, Trevor Harrold is achieving what many people can only imagine. Trevor represented Queensland at the Australian International Shooting Limited Youth Championships, held at Olympic Stadium in Sydney from 5th - 8th December. Competing against shooters up to 25 years of age, Trevor received a silver medal in the 25m Rapid Fire event. Trevor began shooting at the age of 11, when he was able to sit for his pistol licence. He is dedicated to his sport and has achieved a level of excellence which reflects this.

Trevor’s father, Rick Harrold, said his son has had a big year, competing successfully at the Queensland State Titles and the Beaudesert Pistol Club’s Open Shoot whilst maintaining excellent grades throughout Year 11. Trevor also received two awards at Tamborine Mountain State High School’s Awards Night. He received an Achievement in Sport award for his Pistol Shooting achievements (representing the State) and an Academic Award for Industrial Graphics Design. Trevor hopes to one day represent Australia in Pistol Shooting.
