FOODWORKS HAS COMMUNITY AT HEART

Canungra FoodWorks recently donated $5,000 to Canungra State School to purchase a large number of Apple iPads. The iPads will be used by students, introducing them to a technology which is increasingly being implemented across many educational, social and career paths. Colleen Murphy, Canungra State School principal said, “We are extremely grateful for Canungra FoodWorks’ generosity to fund this great learning initiative. Many students and teachers are already very excited to hear of this news and are very appreciative of what Foodworks has contributed to this school and ultimately, the local community.” Canungra FoodWorks is a major contributor to the school’s fundraising initiatives including annual bursaries; inter-school sport, a music trip to Melbourne and the donation of barbeque items for fundraising. In addition to the school, they support local sporting teams, the Canungra Show, Canungra Rodeo, Swimming Club, Carols in the Park and the Anzac day gunfi re breakfast culminating in the free sausage sizzle at FoodWorks on Anzac day each year.

Since opening fi ve years ago, FoodWorks has received great support from the community and in turn has been integral in many community initiatives, sponsorships and fundraising; resulting in contributions of over $150 000. FoodWorks also supports farmers in our area by stocking local produce lines such as lemons, lettuce, avocadoes, mushrooms and even fl owers grown and picked fresh in Canungra.

“We aim to be at the forefront in corporate and social responsibility,” said FoodWorks Proprietor, Tony Nguyen, “A big thank you to all who have supported Canungra FoodWorks over the years - without you we wouldn’t be in business. We hope we have done the community proud over the years. We are happy and proud to be a part of the town and humbled to have great support and feedback from the community.”

Canungra Golf Club faces the loss of its clubhouse

Golf Club Continues Fight for Clubhouse Beaudesert MP Jon Krause has given his full support to the Canungra Area Golf Club in their fi ght to save their clubhouse. Mr. Krause spoke on the issue in State Parliament on Thursday 7th June. He said he had a letter from the Club which “..outlines the fact that the Commonwealth Department of Defence intends to demolish their clubhouse.” Mr. Krause also said “In this letter I have it is said that the demolition of their golf clubhouse will cost around $90,000. However, if an arrangement were made with the Commonwealth Department of Defence to replace the facilities, the saving to the Commonwealth would be substantial and the community would also maintain its facilities.” “I bring the conundrum of this golf club

to the attention of the House and assure the residents of Canungra and the members of the golf club that I will be lobbying the Commonwealth Minister for Defence Mr. Krause said in his speech, “We need to have a healthy society, and people playing golf and walking the fairways is one way that people can stay healthy and active. It is also an important tourist attraction for the area of Canungra.” Mr. Krause said that he had since written to the Minister for Defence to ask the Defence Department to enable the Canungra Area Golf Club’s clubhouse to be repaired or replaced so the community can continue to have the use of this facility for years to come. Mr. Krause said that he was waiting for a response from the Minister for Defence.

Kindy’s Big Day Out

By Annett Field, C&K Canungra On Tuesday 12th June, children from C&K Canungra had a trip around town to visit the Police Station and also the lovely Bean In? Cafe. The children were able to create their own cupcakes with the wonderful Sonya Van Gent and staff at Bean In? donating cupcakes and juice for the children as well as gift bags for them to take home. Such a wonderful business needs to be commended for giving the children such a wonderful experience. We also visited the local police station where the police and staff showed the children around. It was a great day out for parents and children alike.

Eduquest – Big Success

Eduquest was held at Tamborine Mountain College on Tuesday 29th May. Eduquest is an annual event for Year 7 primary students to partake in educational challenges in learning areas such as Maths, English, Science, History, Geography and Drama. This year teams came from Tamborine Mountain State School, St Bernard’s State School, Canungra State School and Cedar Creek State School. St Bernards State School was the winning school! The school took out the major prize of the Trophy and a cheque for $1,000. Each Team member received an Eduquest medallion and an Eduquest bag full of educational prizes! Tamborine Mountain College Scholarships were awarded by TMC Board Members, Prof Jack Walton, Mr John Hill and Mr John Lamb to the top three students on the day. • 1st – Thor Wendell from St Bernards • 2nd – Callum Waite from TMSS • 3rd – Tom Sheppard from Canungra Cedar Creek State School took out the Spirit Award which recognised that team’s efforts, cooperation and friendliness. They also took home an Eduquest bag of educational goodies! Mrs Melbourne, the Principal, said that the talent and intelligence displayed by

all the students from the local primary schools indicates a high standard of education. She was so impressed, she would love those, who participated, to make application for a College Scholarship through the normal process of letter and application. It is now the time to make decisions for next year’s education and Tamborine Mountain College offers excellent education in a caring and nurturing learning environment. It was a great day, giving schools and teachers an opportunity to mix and compete in a real community event. Students also had the opportunity to see the talents of their teachers in the fun event “Teachers on the Spot”. David Church from TMSS took out the “best” teacher prize. All participants on the day received an Eduquest gift bag. Thanks was given to businesses which supported the event –The Polish Place, La Ferme Provencale, Songbirds, Belvedere, Bearded Dragon, St Bernards Hotel, Rainforest Skywalk, Laser-Skirmish, Harbour Town Reading Cinema, Heritage Winery, Symons Educational Books. It is truly wonderful when this support occurs for such a worthwhile event! Congratulations to all who made Eduquest such a success again this year.

Canungra’s History Canungra Area Golf Club By Robyn Denmeade Kokoda Barracks has been part of the Canungra township since 1942, when the land was acquired by the Federal Government for the purpose of jungle training during the Second World War. In 1971, the Federal Government resumed twenty-six farming properties to extend these holdings. One of these properties was originally owned by Herb Bull from 1917, with an original homestead built in 1932 by local builder Sid Rowe. This property was later sold to Vince and Joyce Skelley in 1952. The Department of Defence turned this property into a landing area for small planes along with a nine hole golf course, soccer and football fields. Later paddocks

for horses for the Canungra Army Saddle Club were incorporated into the property. These recreational facilities were for Army personnel and their families living on the base, with the local civilian population being invited to join and use the golf course and join in the Saddle Club activities. This proved a great interaction and cooperation between Army personnel and the local population. The Canungra Area Golf Club was established in 1969 and the original farmhouse on the property is still used as the clubhouse. In the early 1970’s, the clubhouse building was raised on concrete stumps to provide storage areas underneath.

Dr Bernie’s Last Day

By Chloe Pickard After 26 and a half years of general practice in Canungra, Dr Burnard Elliott saw patients in his Finch Road practice for the last time Saturday 30th June. Dr Bernie was 38 when he came to Canungra, after a 14 year long career in Australia and New Zealand as both a stationary General Practitioner and traveling doctor. While driving to visit his wife’s family, they passed through Canungra and both commented on the beauty of the town and its surroundings. Dr Bernie remembers wondering where the doctor’s surgery was. Later, he was told a vacancy had opened in the area and he came to Canungra as a doctor on 19th January 1987. During his time here, he has also been a member and the president of the ambulance committee for over ten years, raising money for ambulance equipment such as defi brillators. Justice of Peace, ambulance committee member and long time friend, Joe Rye, said Dr Bernie was a highly capable man and it would be a shame to see him leave. “He was always available for anything that was needed,” he said. Dr Bernie is a keen golfer and has played every 18 hole course from Tweed to Beenleigh except one. He also enjoys sports such as surfi ng, diving and football. He has recently been treated for four protruded lumbar disks at the Melbourne Radiology, but has managed to maintain his active lifestyle. His new practice is in Metro Shopping Centre at Biggera Waters. The deadline for articles and advertising for the August edition of The Canungra Times is 12 noon on Monday 23rd July. Articles and advertising will not be accepted after this time.

Dr Burnard Elliott leaves Canungra after 26 years

Dr Bernie said he would miss the small stable community of Canungra. “I have enjoyed my time here and consider many of my patients friends,” he said.

Wayne Raises Cash for Blue Care

Wayne Reiser’s fundraising for Blue Care has reached an estimated $30,000 accumulated over recent years. Wayne presented Blue Care representatives, Jenny Watson and Ev Poole with a cheque for $4,000 which he has raised locally in the last 12 months. The funds go to Blue Care’s Auxillary which provides community nursing vehicles. These vehicles cover a wide area, from the NSW border to Boonah, Beaudesert and Canungra to care for people in their homes. Jenny Watson, of Blue Care Beaudesert, said Wayne’s contributions over the years have been invaluable to the continuation of the community nursing services in the region. Business is Blooming!

Florist Tina Brown and her fi ance, Chris Galea, realised their dream when they purchased Beaudesert fl orist shop, Blooms in the Desert in May this year. It will be an eventful year for the couple who will be married in August. Tina has been a fl orist for 29 years. She obviously loves her craft and has a great gift for creating beautiful arrangements. She has a particular interest in fl oral arrangements for weddings and is able to source whatever the bride needs for her special day. The couple is committed to using local fl owers where possible. “We prefer to buy local and have a lot of local growers now. We source lisianthus, chrysanthemums, roses and gerberas locally but deal with some wholesalers for some more exotic fl owers such as lillies,” said Tina. Blooms in the Desert

Happy Birthday Wilf - 90 Years! Studios at Wallaby Ridge By Noela Lee Canungra’s oldest long term resident celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends on the June long weekend. The youngest son of Jesse and Mabel Mahony, Wilf was born in Beaudesert hospital and enjoyed his fi rst sulky ride home to Canungra two weeks later. His father was a bullock team driver and Wilf lived his early years in town at the family home, situated across the creek from the current Picnic Place. When he was 10, his father took up an opportunity to move to Pine Creek and take up dairying. Wilf accompanied him and began his working life as a dairy farmer. The family moved permanently to his current home at Pine Creek after the house was completed. He continued his schooling at Flying Fox school, riding his horse approximately fi ve miles to school. Wilf continues to work the family farm, which now runs beef cattle, with his nephew Paul. His only concession to his age is the choice of horse he rides - he leaves the very young ones to Paul to work - but he can still be found out mustering or working the farm any day of the week. Even though the family lived out of town, Wilf has always been an active member of the Canungra community.

Wilf Mahony celebrates his 90th birthday with his sister, Win

He was a member of the show society and had attended every show held in Canungra until last year when bad weather and ill health prevented him from attending. Wilf was a founding member of the Canungra Bowls Club and as patron of the club still has an active interest in the club and still rolls the occasional bowl down. He had a proud moment at his party when Peter Hickson, on behalf of the Bowls club, presented him with the Patriarch’s badge. Wilf was fortunate to celebrate his birthday with his oldest sister, Win, who will turn 96 in August.

By Robyn Fortescue The crowds still poured into Open Studios despite the rain on 2nd and 3rd June. Despite over 115mm of rain over the last weekend the crowds came to visit the last leg of the Open Studios of the Scenic Rim at Wallaby Ridge Retreat’s Artist Collective at Wonglepong and at Binna Burra. The Binna Burra leg of the trail was also well attended with lots of participants in the workshops on basket making with award winning Therese Flint-Clarke and photography on “the little things” with Sharon Louise. “There were kids from 8 to 80 year olds in raincoats in the rainforest, it was a lot of fun” said Sharon, an experienced and talented nature photographer. The Wallaby Ridge Arts Collective of four talented artists and one effervescent bush poet displayed, recited and entertained visitors from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan and the Scenic Rim. Many had been following the past studios and events in other regions over the month and had enjoyed the whole experience immensely. Demonstrations of felting by Wendi Trulson and watercolours by Tamlyn Geiger and Gerard Walker were popular with novices, children and experienced artists alike. Deputy Mayor Virginia West gave a warming speech to launch Joy’s anthology of poetry “The Joy of Life” Saturday afternoon at Wallaby Ridge. In true style Joy recited a few of her poems whilst a crowd watched on enjoying wood fi red pizza. The Raku fi ring scheduled for Saturday afternoon was postponed until Sunday 8th July from 2pm, anyone interested please call Robyn on 5543 4340 or go to the website: www.wallabyridge.com.au.

From My Window...

Community. According to dictionary.reference.com, community is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. Recently, a friend came to me with a problem. A dear friend of hers has cancer and the family are struggling to find money for treatment. She wanted to do something to help and quickly discovered there are a number of families in our community facing similar situations. Did she shrug her shoulders and say, “This is too hard, I can’t do anything. This is not my problem.” No, she didn’t. Instead, polarised by the glaring need, she rounded up more people and created RimFest. RimFest will take place at Moriarty Park on Saturday 21st July from 1pm with live music and entertainment, raffles, a silent auction and jumping castle. Everyone who has been asked to contribute to this event has done so without hesitation. Even in these tough financial times, people have said ‘yes’ because they know it is needed, or because they’ve been there. All money raised from this event will go to families who are struggling because of a loved one’s illness. I think the dictionary had it wrong. Community is people who care about each other. It describes Canungra perfectly. Have a great month everyone- and see you at RimFest

Letters to the Editor Bowls Club Grant The members of the Canungra Bowls Club Inc would like to express their appreciation of the support given to the Club by the Scenic Rim Regional Council. We were the recipients of a Grant that assisted with the erection of a new, secure shed for the machinery and chemicals used on the green. Many thanks, Joyce Libke, Hon. Secretary Trauma Teddies The QCWA Wonglepong Branch thank the staff at the Outpost Cafe for their contribution towards our supplying the Ambulance Station and The Canungra Valley Medical Centre with tiny trauma teddies. These are used to comfort children in traumatic situations. When we found these ‘tiny teddies’ fitted neatly into the plastic bags the Outpost Cafe uses for individual sets of cutlery, they gave me a packet of bags and have offered to resupply when necessary. This is greatly appreciated as each teddy can now be bagged and no matter what the situation will be kept clean until handed to a child. Many thanks, Joyce Libke, Vice President The Word From the Mountain Dear Editor I was having a coffee with one of my fellow Directors at the Spice of Life on Tamborine when he drew my attention to The Canungra Times which was there in the newspaper rack. It’s the first time I ever saw it, read it or knew about it, in the 19 years I’ve lived on Tamborine and I sincerely offer my congratulations on such a fantastic colourful, local edition. What I also appreciate, is that your paper is not filled like our local Tamborine Mountain editions, with vitriolic and vindictive letters to the Editor, pitting neighbour against neighbour, dividing the community, as a substitute for sound responsible journalism. Having served 33 years in the Television industry, as a TV Journalist, Publicity Manager and later as Managing Director of National Marketing and hailing from a family with national media links, I congratulate you. Yours sincerely, John Penglis Managing Director, Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard & Winery

whaT’S haPPenIng aT Canungra Valley meDICal Dr Dave and I are keen to increase the level of medical services available to the Canungra area. I am taking on new patients, while Dr Dave for the most part is concentrating on the care of his existing patient group. My interests are very broad - I really believe in the “general” part of being a GP. The kinds of areas that I am very happy to see include dermatology (skin), muscular and skeletal problems including sprains, strains, minor fractures and so on, neurology (nerve problems including pain, numbness, headaches, dizziness) and chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, etc. In the dermatology area, we have just taken delivery of cryotherapy equipment. This means that we are able to treat a number of different kinds of skin problems such as warts, skin tags, non-melanoma skin cancers and so on. The area of skin to be treated is cooled with liquid nitrogen at -196°c. The treated tissue dies back over the next little while and is replaced with healthy skin. As part of monitoring skin health, I have started to compile photo surveillance sets for people who have more than 20 dysplastic naevi (funny looking but not cancerous pigmented spots). Of course, not everyone who has a skin check as part of their checkup will need this service, but for those who do, I would encourage patients to bring along a “thumb drive” so they can take home a copy of their set. For those people who fi nd they have suspicious spots and dots that require removal, a good deal of this can be done under local anaesthetic at the Surgery. Obviously, patient care is paramount, so there will always be some removals that are best done elsewhere. Both Dr Dave and I have installed cameras and software to permit TeleHealth consults. This lets patients have Internet consults with specialists. At the moment, there are about half a dozen Specialists in the Gold Coast area that are offering TeleHealth consults, but the number is growing. Regards, Dr Andy Rees

Making 2012 Your Best Year Yet!

Words are not the only thing! By Adele Spurgin

Have you ever noticed that the quality of questions you ask yourself can really have a profound impact on your day to day living results? Yr what ...? Truly, if you start to pay attention to the questions you ask of yourself you can effortlessly change the fl ow of your day! Remember a time when your teacher or parent would ask you “why” you did x? Or “why” you did y, or z? And how truly the answer would allude you? Well here is the thing - your amazing brain only wants to solve problems for you, it literally only wants to get things right (what ever that is) and when you ask it a dull question, especially one starting with a why, you end up getting quite a dull answer... fascinating. Play with me a bit if you like ... think of something that has been niggling you this week ... something that’s been on your mind of late. Got one thing? Good. Now answer these four questions please, referring to the above chosen problem. • What would happen if you did have x? • What would happen if you didn’t have x? • What wouldn’t happen if you did have x? • And what wouldn’t happen if you didn’t have x? Good questions or what? And curious, how’s that old problem now?

Please, do continue

Walk the Camino Frances

By Stephen Crook Get fi t and see France and Northern Spain! I am organising a once in a lifetime trip to walk part of the Camino Frances (as seen in the movie The Way) on 20th April 2013. The Camino is walked by thousands of people every year. Some walk for religion, some for the adventure and some to keep fi t and lose weight. I am looking at taking a group of 10-12 people to walk 10 days on the Camino Frances. The walk starts in St Jean Pied De Porte in France, crosses Northern Spain and fi nishes 780km at Santiago de Compostela (it takes about four weeks to complete). The part of the trip I am organising will be to walk the fi rst 10 days.

From there you can either continue the walk individually, return home with me, or travel Europe at your leisure. As a personal trainer, I will be there to guide and motivate you and get you through the initial stages of the walk, however the journey is yours to take and you can walk at whatever pace you want as long as we all arrive in the same town at the end of each day. This walk is not for the faint hearted and I will be organising preparation walks leading up to the trip so we are all well prepared. Each day will be different but the average day will consist of walking approximately 20km from town to town through the beautiful Spring scenery of France and Spain.

To fi nd out more information about the walk visit www.caminodesantiago.me.uk. If you want to fi nd out more details then please call me on 0431 208 588. I will organise an information session later in the year for those interested.

Council Comment

By Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Councillor, Division Three

Promise Of Obstetrics Services Return To Beaudesert Hospital: The new Health Minister Lawrence Springborg made the landmark commitment at a recent Rural Doctors conference, that obstetric services would be returned to Beaudesert Hospital by 2014. This is certainly a momentous announcement not only for Beaudesert residents but for those in the surrounding areas. It has taken over 10 years of community, health professional and council lobbying to get to this point again which is a tribute to their perserverance and commitment.

Obstetric services will be returned to Beaudesert Hospital by 2014

Bromelton Update: The draft Bromelton Structure Plan was adopted at the last Ordinary meeting and now goes to the State Government for fi nal review. This is one of the most signifi cant documents to come before the new council and will be driving employment opportunities in the area into the future. Two companies have already committed signifi cantly to development in the precinct and are “ready to go”. Farewell Dr Bernie Elliot: Dr “Bernie” closed his practise on Saturday 30th June and is taking up a practise at Biggera Waters. I know the broader Canungra and

Beechmont community wish him every success. I would like to thank Bernie for his huge commitment and dedication to our community for so many years, not only as a GP but also as President of the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee since it began over 18 years ago. Thankyou Bernie and best wishes. Congratulations Roberta: Local resident Roberta Shaw was a recipient of a grant in the latest RADF grant round,a partnership between Arts Queensland and Scenic Rim Council. Roberta will receive fi nancial support to attend the 2012 TAFTA Textile Forum in Geelong. Roberta has a very successful career in the movie industry so this will enable her to further develop her creative skills. Budget 2012/2013: Council has already had a number of budget deliberation meetings and the Budget will be delivered at a Special Ordinary Meeting on 13th July. Council are aiming for a budget that refl ects our current economic climate in Queensland yet maintains the council infrastructure and assets at the same time being mindful of our ratepayers. Contact Me: Due to the increased commitments of the Deputy Mayor position I am going to stop being at the Canungra Library on the fi rst Saturday of the month but will be happy to catch up with residents on a Saturday morning with an appointment. Simply phone me on 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or email me virginia.w@scenicrim. qld.gov.au and I will be happy to catch up with you whenever suits.

CT’s Movie Review - Brave

By Chloe Pickard This is Pixar’s fi rst fi lm with a female lead and fi ttingly it’s about mother-daughter relationships as well as a fantasy/action story. Set in the medieval Scottish highlands, the story centres on princess Merida and her arranged marriage. When she asks for a spell to change her mother’s mind about the marriage, it has unforseen consequences which force her to try and reverse it. The fi lm has a strong theme of mother-daughter bonding as well as boasting one of the scariest animals I’ve seen in a while. While the trailers and some of the release material were misleading, I still enjoyed the fi lm. Brave lacks some of the more intelligent humour that Pixar fi lms normally have, but is still a pleasure to watch and much more meaningful than many family fi lms.

The Canungra Times Crossword

Your Stars - July 2012

By Phil Keeble - Answers page 30

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

Mars shifts into Libra. The planet of volatility is in the sign of peace. The implication for Rams is that some of that rambunctious impulsiveness will be tempered. Action that delivers genuine freedom will be blessed. Action that tangles you, will be its own dodgy karma.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)

Love is looking for ways to spread her wings and explore her individuality. Loosen the binds that keep you and anyone near from fully fl owering. Freedom serves love. Freedom isn’t licence. It’s all the work of Venus in Gemini. Playfulness is a major clue. Keep it light.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

Mercury is in Leo and appearing to go backwards in the sky, which bodes well for introspection. This placement points you in the direction of fi guring out just how best to shine. Leo rules the heart, so there’s a hint. It’s in our hearts that our light resides. It’s ok show it.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)

From the very depth and intensity of emotion, truth lights up like the dawn. You can expect an insight or two about your position. This will lead you to fi nding your feet on new and very solid ground. This sounds like transition. Trust will help. Go with the waves of fate.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

The Sun moves into Leo this month. It’s your time to shine. It’s your time to put on a show of who you are. There’s no point in understatement, if fl amboyance is in your genes. Put it out there and be introspective enough at the same time, to learn all there is know.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Life is leaving you alone to pick up the pieces and assimilate all the wonderful learning’s gleaned from Mars’s prolonged visit to your shores. Mercury’s placement in Leo, points you in the direction of wanting to experience more and more of who you really are.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Mars and Saturn are in your midst. Mars is the warrior planet. He is about drive, adventure and sometimes anger. Saturn is about slowing down and learning to listen to your essence, rather than your impulse. Accelerator and brake. Figure out how fi re can serve wisdom.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

Pluto is retrograde. Whenever our ruling planets appear to be going backwards in the sky, we are impelled to identify their salient qualities within ourselves, rather than in external events. Pluto is about regeneration. Identify what it is that serves fresh growth and what doesn’t.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

As the North Node of the Moon slowly heads for its departure from Sagittarius, so it’s time to refl ect on the lessons learned during its passage. The North Node is all about the future, vision, evolution, moving forward. Is your compass now pointed in the right direction?

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Uranus goes retrograde. Because of its orbit, it looks to stop in its tracks and then go backwards. Freedom is the issue of Uranus. To simply go against everything that is, is not freedom. It’s a fast track to frustration. Forget reactivity. Find the open sky. It’s calling out loud.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

There’s a lot of heavenly bodies appearing to go backwards this month. Your guests, Neptune and Chiron, are no exception. Identify their qualities on the inside. Neptune is the ocean of bliss. Chiron is the healing force. Let go of misery and dis-ease. Find home again.

Pluto is delivering some clear pointers towards the things on the inside that are blocking the way. It’s not easy to identify our blind spots and hang self-love and self-confi dence together at the same time. Be gentle with yourself as understanding enters. This is regeneration.

The Canungra Times, July 2012

Everyone who knows me asks where I have visited recently in pursuit of wildlife. Recently, I traveled back to South Africa and spent three weeks in its worldrenowned Kruger National Park. With three other intrepid Aussie travelers, I drove the length of the National Park and encountered some amazing creatures. Some may ask how one gets to the Kruger National Park. The best way is to fly to the town of Nelspruit near the south end of the park and self-drive throughout the Park. The accommodation in the Kruger National Park is top-notch. However, for anyone wishing to stay in the Park, I recommend booking well in advance. Plus, an International Wildcard will help cut down on the cost of conservation fees that must be paid by visitors. Through my contacts in South African National Parks, I was able to organise to be involved in game capture involving elephants. To be so close to such a large animal is a feeling that one cannot describe. We were also lucky enough to meet one of the other

large resident mammals in the form of a White Rhino who had a liking for a pat. Currently, in South Africa these amazing creatures are being poached at an alarming rate for their horn. The South African government is calling on all means possible to halt this senseless slaughter. Such initiatives could be taken on board by other countries around the world to preserve its wildlife. Now, some people may be asking what animals did I see. Whilst in Kruger National Park I was able to witness the Big Five. The Big Five are the five animals: the Lion, Buffalo, Leopard, Elephant and Rhino which all visitors wish to see. Plus, I also observed an array of birds such the Secretary Bird, Martial Eagle and Southern Ground Hornbill. Other unique wildlife species that I encountered included the Hippo, Giraffe, Spotted Hyena, Common Warthog If you want to experience these unique forms of wildlife I can not think of a better place to visit.

Vet Talk

- ARTHRITIS IN ANIMALS -

with Chris Corcoran, Canungra Veterinary Clinic

Arthritis is very common in pets. It is more prevalent in older dogs of mediumlarge breeds, but all breeds of dog, cats and horses can be affected. Symptoms include stiffness and reluctance to move (especially in the morning), diffi culty climbing or descending stairs, reluctance to walk or play, lagging behind on walks, personality changes (sometimes aggression), chewing or licking at joints and yelping in pain when touched. Most of the joints in the body rely on a layer of cartilage to act as a “shockabsorber” inside the joint. The cartilage also provides a smooth layer so bones can move freely over each other. Joints also contain synovial fl uid which provides lubrication to reduce friction or rubbing between adjoining bones. In animals with arthritis, the cartilage deteriorates and is worn away. It becomes rough, sometimes allowing the bones to rub against each other. To exacerbate matters, the joint fl uid becomes thin and watery resulting in less lubrication and increased friction and pain within the joint. Any joint can be affected by arthritis, most commonly hips, knees, shoulder, elbows, and sometimes the spine.

There are strategies and remedies available to relieve arthritis, mainly: analgesics (pain relief), joint modifying medications, and nutraceuticals. The most common pain relief used in animals is non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs. These drugs are effective in reducing the pain and are safe in animals of all ages. However they only treat the symptoms. Joint-modifying drugs, particularly Cartrophen, are effective in treating the disease process that causes arthritis. Cartrophen helps protect cartilage from deterioration and increase the production of joint fl uid. I think this drug is one of the best veterinary medications to come onto the market in the last twenty years. Nutraceuticals, including glucosamine, chondroitin and omega fatty acids help provide the building blocks for joint fl uid and repair and regeneration of damaged cartilage. As well as medications, good weight control and a healthy diet are important in treating arthritis. If you have any questions about arthritis, or feel your animal can benefi t from these remedies, please call us at the surgery.

AWL Pets of the Month

Diva (7963): This beautiful cat is Diva, aged 1 year old. She is a lovely girl and has learnt to have a tolerance for dogs while in foster care. While she won’t play with them, she will share a house with them. Diva would be better suited to a family with children over the age of 10, as she enjoys her solitude and peace. Diva is $100 and is already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and fl ea-treated. Matey (10156): This handsome boy is Matey, Kelpie cross Aussie Cattle aged 1 year old. He’s an energetic bundle of fun who is looking forward to playing and running with his active new family. He has lots of love to offer and will be a very loyal, affectionate friend. Matey is $240 and is already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and fl ea-treated. If you would like to meet Diva or Matey, contact the Gold Coast Rehoming Centre on 07 5509 9000 to see if they are still available, or visit the AWL QLD website: www.awlqld.com.au for more information.

This character filled Post War home on a 1416sqm flat allotment is located in the centre of Canungra. The home features formal lounge and dining areas with red cedar and beech timber tongue and groove walls, high ceilings, french doors leading to the modern kitchen with meals area and plenty of storage.

Page 24

The Canungra Times, July 2012

There are three bedrooms, two with built in robes and air-conditioning and a double bedroom at the rear of the home off the enclosed area which could be utilised as a study area or kids play area. There is a modern bathroom and another shower room at the rear of the home. The inground pool offers a place to cool down in summer and the flat back yard

has plenty of options for kids to play or build another shed. A small garden shed provides storage for gardening equipment. The price has been reduced to $330,000 and at that price this beauty won’t last. By Suzanne Roberts Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers Please be aware that if building work is carried out on land by a person who is not licensed to carry out that building work (an owner-builder) and the land is offered for sale within six years after completion of the building work, you must give the buyer a notice under the Queensland Building Services Authority Act 1991 (the “Act”). This notice must contain details of the building work and a warning in the form required by the Act. The Act also requires the notice to be given to the buyer before the buyer signs the contract to buy the house. The effect of not complying with the Act is that you will be understood to have given the buyer a warranty that the building work was properly carried out and

the buyer may be able to terminate the contract prior to settlement. Renovations and extensions to the house where the value of labour and materials is less than $6,000 or where the building work does not require council approval are exempt from the Act. Renovations and extensions of a value greater than $6,000.00 for labour and materials require an owner-builder permit. Please note that the Act applies not only to the original owner-builder but also to anyone who has owned the property within six years after the work was completed. That means if you own a property where owner-builder work was done to the property in the last six years it is your obligation to warn a prospective buyer.

Breast Basics at It is useful to understand the physiology of the women’s breast. You may already know about it but here is a brush up: • each breast is 90% water, • can weigh 200/800 gms, • sits on the chest wall between the 2nd and 6th rib, • statistically, left breasts are often slightly larger than right ones (up to 2 cup sizes), • breasts have no internal support structure and rely almost totally on skin tension for their shape. This last point is why a good fitting bra is so important.

Sport FoodWorks Sponsors Shirts and Strips for Owls

Canungra Owls Soccer Club President, Bren Dalby with Canungra FoodWorks Manager, David Huynh

Canungra

By Bren Dalby Canungra Owls Soccer Club has new training shirts and strips, thanks to sponsorship by Canungra FoodWorks. Club President, Bren Dalby said FoodWorks has been a major sponsor of the Club over the last five years and continues to support the club in a tremendous way, donating over $3,000 already this season. “Their generosity over the past five years has helped the club to continue operating,” said Bren, “Their sponsorship allowed players to receive personalised training shirts and the teams now have brand new playing strips.” “The Owls need to replace all old strips this year and look at an ‘away’ strip for the Competition teams. We are hugely appreciative of the help provided by Tony, Anne and David at Foodworks, ” said Bren. Foodworks has also volunteered their assistance for many of the soccer club’s fundraisers, training, and canteen operations over the past five years.

News

By David Baker It’s the half way point in the season so a quick update on some of our teams follows (update on our small sided teams will appear next month): Senior Men have managed four wins from 12 games, but have struggled with injuries and a very fluid team roster. Thanks go to Will Sayer as coach, Pete Tiv manager (and bingo caller) and support from Fred. The Under 14s were put into Division 3 after the grading rounds and have found their sweet spot with three wins from four games and are comfortably in the top four. Thanks very much to John Harrison Snr for taking this team under his coaching wings and to the mercurial Judy Hampson for managing this team. The Under 12’s were left in Division 4 for reasons only known to Football Gold Coast as they are undefeated in nine games with 97 goals scored and only nine against as we go to print. The core of this team has progressed through the age groups and this will likely be their third season undefeated. What an effort! Congratulations to coach Matt Boland and Manager Rachel Aiken. Volunteers are needed to spend about an hour a week doing the linemarking of our fields for the remainder of the season and also to sell raffle tickets at the Canungra Hotel every second Sunday arvo. If you are able to help please call Bren 0414 435 919. Bingo at the Pub will be held Friday 6th July at 6.45pm for a 7pm “eyes down” at the Canungra Hotel. GO THE OWLS!

Tony Nguyen, Proprietor of Canungra FoodWorks believes the soccer club is a great community icon. “We are delighted to support this sporting centre throughout the years,” said Tony, “It brings tremendous joy and pride to see the kids, their families and local supporters come to the games and support their local talents.” Currently the club is fund raising by holding bingo nights. The atmosphere at these fun filled nights has been entertaining and exhilarating with heaps of prizes to be won. So get along for a fun night and a tremendous chance to go home with a little something (or a lot of somethings!) and know you have helped support local causes. Bren said FoodWorks has donated all the prizes for the bingo nights. “The club cannot thank them enough,” she said, “We really would struggle without the support and generosity of FoodWorks - Tony, Anne and David are terrific for the community.”
