SRRC $117 Million Budget

Scenic Rim Regional Council has delivered a $117 million Budget for 2013-14. “Council has taken a fiscally prudent approach in endeavouring to balance service delivery, costs and community expectations against revenue from rates and charges,” Mayor John Brent said. “In doing so, we have had to tackle the challenge of significant cuts to State and Federal funding and changes to land valuations across the region.” Cr Brent said in framing this year’s Budget, Council remained mindful of the cost of living pressures being experienced by many in the community. “The average Scenic Rim owner-occupier can expect to pay $1.73 more per week,” Cr Brent said. He said Council would continue to invest in road, bridge and infrastructure improvements across the region in 2013-14 as a strategic priority. “Our Capital Works Program maintains a continuing focus on renewing infrastructure with a $52 million investment in 2013-14 and $10 million for new works.” Expenditure in Council’s 2013-14 Budget includes $19.01 million for road and bridge improvements and maintenance; $5.84 million for waste operations; $1.58 million for libraries, $2.21 million for parks, gardens and cemeteries; $2.91 million for regional development; $5.43 million for community facilities; $4.33 million for health, building and environment; and $41.58 million in disaster restoration works. Cr Brent said in 2013-14 Council would also continue to chart a course towards achieving long-term financial sustainability. Waste Trasnfer Station hours to change, page 13

Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk

By Chloe Pickard Pioneering dairy farmer Greg Dennis’ highly anticipated Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk is now available from Canungra Caltex and Canungra Foodworks. After Mr Dennis’ five year contract with Paramalat ended and he was faced with a 25% cut in profit under the new contract they offered, he went independent and built the first Lely robotic dairy in Queensland. Mr Dennis said that the low milk prices have been hurting farmers as they make less than production costs under it, and companies will not negotiate. “I tried pretty hard for a couple of years but they wouldn’t budge on the offer,” he said. “We decided we needed to bottle our

own milk and stay in control, including putting a couple of trucks on the road and delivering milk to shops.” Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk is different from other brands as it can be bought un-homogenised and is much fresher as it has only travelled 1.5 hours from where it was processed. Food Works owner Tony Nguyen said Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk had gained a positive reception from customers and they planned to keep it in stock as long as there was a demand for it. A highly successful opening day was held at the farm on 25th June with Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh opening the dairy.

CANUNGRA GROUPS SHARE IN $40,000

Several Canungra community groups will share in Council’s latest round of quarterly community grants. “Council is pleased to be able to provide its support to our local community groups, who work very hard to deliver a range of valuable services right across the region,” Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Nigel Waistell said. The program provides assistance to community groups within the region to undertake projects and events that benefit the community. Council allocated $175,000 to fund the four rounds of the program this financial year. Local groups who received funding in round four included: • Canungra Area Golf Club - Contribution to purchase of a new clubhouse. • Canungra Art & Cultural Group Inc - Purchase a cabinet and vacuum cleaner. • Canungra Chamber of Commerce - Purchase a marquee. • Canungra Hang Gliding Club - Construct concrete slab for shed. • Canungra Rural Fire Brigade - Purchase a water tank and pump. • Canungra Scout Group - Refit kitchen. • Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Inc Replace concrete base of cricket pitch. • The Creche & Kindy Assn (C&K Canungra Kindy) Installation of blinds. - Obituary William George Zastrow II

18 March 1940 - 12 June 2013 Well known Canungra real estate agent and Secretary of the Canungra Sports and Recreation Ground Inc, William George Zastrow II passed away suddenly on 12th June 2013, aged 73. Bill was born in Hayward Wisconsin on 18th March 1940 to William George Zastrow and Alice Munkeby. He married Celia Zastrow on 5th August 1980 and is survived by his son Tyson Zastrow. Bill established himself in Canungra in 1983 where he was embraced by the community. He opened Countryman Real Estate and quickly established a reputation as an honest businessman with a great community spirit. He was kind, generous and a place of refuge for many. He will be deeply missed.

Waste Transfer Station Operating Hours Council is introducing a revised schedule of operating hours at waste transfer stations throughout the Scenic Rim. The changes will take effect from 30 July 2013 and are as follows: Beaudesert Open daily 9am-5pm; Tamborine

Mountain 6 days/week, 9am-5pm (closed Wednesdays); Canungra 6 days/week, 9am-5pm (closed Thursdays); Boonah 6 days/week, 9am-5pm (closed Wednesdays); Rathdowney Open Sunday/Monday/Thursday, 9am-5pm; Kalbar Open Saturday/Sunday/Wednesday, 9am-12pm; Peak Crossing Open Saturday/Sunday/Wednesday, 1pm-5pm. Change to Addressing on Tamborine Mountain At its meeting of Tuesday, 25 June 2013, Council resolved to amend its addressing protocols for properties on Tamborine Mountain. Council was advised by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines that the use of the unbounded neighbourhood names Eagle Heights, Mount Tamborine and North Tamborine were not references to a legal residential address. Instead the bounded locality name Tamborine Mountain should be used in place of these. Based on this advice, Council will amend property addresses that currently refer to Eagle Heights, Mount Tamborine and North Tamborine to Tamborine Mountain. This decision has been made after consultation with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines and Australia Post, including exploring alternatives to the above. The legal residential address is used by many agencies including government, emergency services, insurance agents and utility companies. While mail could continue to be delivered if the unbounded neighbourhood names were used, it was determined that it is important that Council remain consistent with other agencies, particularly emergency services.

Where are Your Neighbourhood Safer Places?

Council and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) have released an updated list of the Scenic Rim’s Neighbourhood Safer Places (NSP). An NSP is a local open space or building where people may gather as a last resort to seek shelter from a bushfire. The following sites are deemed approved NSP areas within the Scenic Rim Region until 30th June 2014: • Beechmont Rural Fire Station, Beechmont Road, Beechmont. • Graceleigh Park, 1925 Beechmont Road, Beechmont. • Tamborine Sports Complex, Cnr Hartley Rd and Long Rd, Tamborine Mtn. • Vonda Youngman Community Centre, Cnr Geissmann and Main St, Tamborine Mtn. • Tamborine Mountain State High School, Holt Rd, Tamborine Mtn. • St Bernard State School, 1/19 School Rd, Tamborine Mtn. An NSP may be your

contingency plan when: • Your Bushfire Survival Plan has failed. • Your plan was to stay but the extent of the fire means your home cannot withstand the impact of the fire and therefore your home is not a safe place to shelter. • The fire has escalated to an

‘extreme’ or ‘catastrophic’ level and voluntary evacuation is your safest option. Council’s Local Disaster Coordinator Mark Griffioen said it was very important for residents living in bushfire prone areas to develop their own personal Bushfire Survival Plan, which should always be used in the first instance.

“There is no time to think in an emergency, so it is vital for people to prepare and plan before a bushfire happens,” he said. “Whether your decision is to leave early or stay and defend your property, an NSP should be used only in the event that your Bushfire Survival Plan fails. “In your planning, also remember to consider the distance and travel time to your nearest NSP, and update your plan every year before the bushfire season.” Mark said Council is working with QFRS to establish Neighbourhood Safer Places in Canungra, Kooralbyn and Rathdowney. “We will meet with QFRS in the next few weeks to assess if there are any locations which meet the NSP guidelines in these areas,” said Mark. In Brief...

Fatal traffic crash, Biddaddaba Canungra resident, Gloria Waterson, passed away following a single vehicle traffic crash at Biddaddaba on the afternoon of 22nd June. The vehicle was being driven along Beaudesert Nerang Road around 5.40pm when it left the roadway and crashed into a tree. Both occupants of the vehicle, Gloria and her husband, Percy, were taken to the Gold Coast Hospital. At the time of printing, Percy remains in hospital. Both Percy and Gloria are long term residents of Canungra. Our thoughts and prayers are with Percy and his family. COUNCIL CHARTS DIRECTION IN NEW CORPORATE PLAN Council has adopted a new Corporate Plan to guide its strategic direction over the next five years. Cr Brent said the objectives of the Corporate Plan mirrored those of the Community Plan: Spectacular Scenery and Healthy Environment; Sustainable and Prosperous Economy; Open and Responsive Government; Relaxed Living and Rural Lifestyle; Vibrant Towns and Villages; Accessible and Serviced Region; Healthy, Engaged and Resourceful Communities. The Scenic Rim Corporate Plan 2013-18 can be viewed on Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/ corporate-publications TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN LOCALITY ISSUES ADDRESSED Council is to adopt a uniform approach to the addressing of properties on Tamborine Mountain on the advice of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines. The Department advised that the official bounded locality name of Tamborine Mountain should be used for addressing purposes rather than the neighbourhood names of Eagle Heights, Mount Tamborine and North Tamborine. “It has been recommended that neighbourhood names not be used for official addressing purposes as they do not reflect the property’s legal residential address,” Corporate and Community Services chair Cr Nigel Waistell said. “Amending Council’s records to reflect the legal address will reduce confusion and bring the Council into line with other government agencies. “It also provides clarity for emergency services personnel as addressing is consistent with State practices and the Australian Standard.”

Canungra’s History Canungra State School History

Canungra State School was not always just the one school. The first district school was at Sarabah and was established by parents of the district in 1884. The Canungra Lower school was established in Wonglepong in 1884 as well. The Sarabah School was first opened in 1892 and closed in 1899. The number of students at the school was as high as 25. The first Witheren School opened in 1899. Flying Fox School opened in 1920.

By Hannah Gill and Heather Moriarty The first Canungra State School was opened on Finch Road in 1901, where, in 1922, the governor, Sir Matthew Nathan visited. In 1962, the State School moved to the old railway yards site, which is where it stands today. In the same year, Witheren and Flying Fox schools closed and the students were transported by bus to Canungra State School. The current Canungra State School has about 384 students and 26 teachers.

Don’t Litter Australia Desexing in July Aims to The National Desexing Network, a program created by the Animal Welfare League of Queensland is collaborating with vet clinics around Australia, including Canungra Veterinary Surgery, to offer discounted desexing prices in July. The community are encouraged to desex their cats and dogs before the spring breeding season to stop huge numbers of unwanted cats and dogs arriving at Australia’s pounds and shelters. Carol Mihaka, Director of the National Desexing Network said the NDN is grateful to the veterinary practices who have agreed to join the desexing program during July as it means anyone nationally can easily access these discounted prices. “Each year, tens of thousands of unwanted cats, dogs and puppies are collected as strays or handed in to Australia’s pounds and shelters. Desexing your pet should be at the top of every responsible pet owners list,” Mrs Mihaka said. “We hope the community will take advantage of these discounted prices over the month of July which in turn will help relieve the burden of having to find homes for the dozens of unwanted litters who are born in the summer months,” Mrs Mihaka says.

Curb Unexpected Litters

Desexing your pet can have lots of health and behavioural benefits including reducing territorial fights, and escaping in dogs and cats becoming more affectionate while lessening the risk of cancer and feline diseases. Cats can be pregnant from four to five months of age. To prevent accidental or early litters, kittens can be safely desexed from two months of age and one kilogram in weight. “It is ideal to desex your pets when they are kittens or puppies as the recovery process is much faster and they are back to themselves again within hours of the operation,” Mrs Mihaka said. A Council environmental program has won the 2013 Healthy Waterways Rural and Agriculture Award. The Rural Environmental Support Program aims to improve the rural landscape and waterways through a synchronised package of initiatives. Deputy Mayor Virginia West said the program was a collaborative effort between Council and the community. “Council worked in close partnership with landowners, land care groups, schools and government agencies at all stages of this program.” The program comprised a number of coordinated green initiatives, including river recovery projects, conservation partnerships, rural tree and environmental grants programs and educational workshops. Division 2 Councillor Nadia O’Carroll acknowledged all involved in the

development and execution of the program. “I would like to commend Council’s environmental officers, whose efforts have made this program an outstanding success. “Our region includes the headwaters of four major river systems that are a vital part of our lifestyle and economy and Council is working to protect these waterways through careful planning, coordinated efforts and collaboration with the community.” The Scenic Rim was well-represented at the awards, with Tamborine Mountain Landcare taking out the Community Award for its Biodiversity Corridors Regeneration Project. Canungra State School rounded out the Scenic Rim’s showing at the awards as a finalist in the Sustainable Education Award category for the Canungra Creek Restoration Project.

Finally, settlement day is here! By now you know the time for settlement and you have your removalist arriving shortly to start packing up your house. But, have you arranged and carried out your pre-settlement inspection? Under the standard conditions of a Contract of Sale, the Buyer is entitled to carry out an inspection of the property prior to settlement. This is generally referred to as a presettlement inspection. The pre-settlement inspection can be arranged at any time leading up to settlement through the Real Estate Agent and is generally carried out either the day before, or the morning of settlement. If you are not satisfied with your inspection, you must contact your Solicitor immediately otherwise your Solicitor may just proceed to settlement. Once settlement has been effected, you may not have any recourse against the Seller to rectify any items.

Waste Transfer Closures to Save $300,000

Council will rationalise the operating hours of its network of waste transfer stations in a move expected to save Scenic Rim ratepayers $300,000 annually. Council operates transfer stations at Boonah, Kalbar, Peak Crossing, Rathdowney, Canungra and Tamborine Mountain in addition to the Central Landfill site at Beaudesert. “The majority of Scenic Rim residents live within a 20-minute drive of one, if not two, waste facilities,” Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Nigel Waistell said. “Additionally, a high level of convenience in terms of long operating hours is provided across the network. “However, this present level of service comes at a cost, with the provision of waste services in its current form representing a $1 million liability annually. “In contrast, many other Councils deliver waste services to the community on a cost recovery basis.” The reduction in hours means Canungra Waste Transfer Station will be closed Thursdays and open 9am - 5pm Friday through Wednesday.

Mayor John Brent said while waste collection and disposal was a core community service of Council, the seven-figure drain on the region’s finances could no longer be sustained. “Ratepayers expect their Council to be a prudent financial manager and identify savings which deliver both efficiencies and improve the bottom line. These measures will help to achieve such an outcome,” Cr Brent said.

“Council has conducted an audit of patronage patterns across the transfer station network and has determined there is scope to rationalise operating hours and reduce costs without significant impact on users. “These planned changes are expected to save ratepayers around $300,000 annually.” Planned changes to operating hours will take effect from the end of July.

Occasionally something on Facebook hits home, and an article entitled ‘When Your Mother Says She’s Fat’ hit home hard. The author, Kasey Edwards, talks about her mother’s weight battle and how it affected her self-image. Where the fashionable male shape generally doesn’t change, a woman’s ‘acceptable’ shape changes depending on the culture she lives in. Where food is scarce, women who are larger are more desirable. In more affluent cultures (such as ours), thin is in. What frightens me as the mother of two girls is the fashionable body for a woman today is that of a pre-pubescent girl, with a flat stomach, thigh gap, long, thin arms and legs and eyes large enough to make you think what she really needs is a good feed and a decent night’s sleep. As Kasey states in the article: ‘Now I understand what it’s like to grow up in a society that tells women that their beauty matters most, and at the same time defines a standard of beauty that is perpetually out of our reach.’ We can’t erase media images, but we can tell our children that these images have been altered. We can point out women (and men) who are doing great things through their deeds, rather than their looks.

Dear Editor, It is a sad reflection on our beautiful little town when a group of teenage boys feel that it is ok to throw seed pods at passing cars, and also at a well respected teacher from Canungra State School. Despite the fact that the three boys involved were identified by other staff members, the boys deny being in the area at the time of the incident and the police are unable to do anything about it.

Warfare to Welfare - Privates on The first edition of Vietnam Veteran’s Calendar “Men at War and Peace “ released in 2007 was a tremendous success and raised over $65,000 for veterans’ welfare services. The 2014 calendar, to be released in early October 2013 will again feature a series of Vietnam vets that have bared “nearly all”. Greg and Annie Carter (Greg a Vietnam Vet himself) who have established a retreat at Bairnsdale for war veterans and their partners, are organising the calendar as a fund raiser to help support the running costs of the retreat. Veterans from around the nation have stayed with the Carters in a quiet, secure, safe and peaceful environment. Nights by the camp fire, a round of golf on the retreat course and pleasant walking tracks all make up a place where mates can share a beer and a chat - all a voluntary and free service.

Parade - Vietnam Vets Bare All There has been no trouble in finding vets to be suitable candidates for the selection of photographs that will be shown in the calendar. The remainder will be shown as smaller images at the back of the calendar . “Men at War and Peace” shows a main photograph of a veteran doing an activity he enjoys in present day life with a smaller image of him on the monthly date page during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Alan Paynter from MT Martha is one of the veterans featured in the calendar. Alan was a “tunnel rat” with the Royal Australian engineers and served in Vietnam in 1968-69. A member of his local RSL club he said it was important to do something for his mates, and the retreat was a wonderful place for them to stay. If they don’t have an owner they will die if this happened to you how would you feel? I am serious about this. Just think of a second or two ... animals need you and they do need you. Lots of animals need you and that’s true. • Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression. • People with pets have lower blood pressure in stressful situations. • Playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calms and relaxes. • Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels. • Pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets.

Boodie (Bettongia Lesueur) By Melissa Whitby

During my recent trip to Western Australia (WA), I was able to work with several threatened bird species. However, I encountered several mammals in WA that are also teetering on the edge of extinction. One such animal was the Boodie also known as the Burrowing Bettong. For those who are wondering what a bettong looks like these animals resemble small, stout kangaroos. The Boodie is an animal that has distinctive yellow-brown fur with a thick tail. My encounter with a Boodie was at the Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in the Perth Hills. This animal was once widespread through arid areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. It is now confined to several islands of the coast of WA. One of the largest contributing factors to the demise of these amazing animals has been the introduction of feral animals such as cats and foxes. Much of Australian’s unique wildlife has no defence against these pests. Boodies are animals that can be highly social and are the only bettongs that live in burrows. The burrow systems of this animal can be extensive and support several animals. The Boodie is an animal

that is nocturnal and has a highly varied diet. This diet is made up of vegetation matter, fungi and soil invertebrates. Breeding for this animal can occur throughout the year with several young raised. The future for this amazing animal may sound grim. However, organisations such as Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy are breeding the animals and re-introducing them to predator-free areas on the mainland. Without concerted conservation efforts such as this much of Australia’s unique wildlife may go the way of the Dodo. If you would like to know more about conservation efforts in WA, I would suggest looking up the websites of the organisations mentioned above. My intention is travel back to WA in the near future, so that I can become involved in these conservation efforts. For anyone interested in volunteering their time, I would suggest contacting the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Many Australians are not aware of Australia’s unique biodiversity or the trouble that it is in. My belief is that making people aware that these animals exist and of their plight, is the first step in ensuring that their existence continues.

BUDGET 2013/2014 The Budget this year has been somewhat challenging given the loss of $1 million in State and Federal funding (this equates to a 3% rate rise) but it is a responsible budget that recognises Council’s long term commitment to financial sustainability. For this Budget, Council has strived to balance the need to maintain service delivery expected by the community against the impact of changing land valuations and funding loss, while at the same time being mindful of the cost of living pressures on all households. This $117 million budget includes $40 million in disaster restoration works and $19 million worth of road and bridge projects. The average rate increase for an owner-occupied property will be $1.73 per week or approximately $90 a year. Savings have been achieved through the rationalisation of waste transfer station operating hours, curtailing of new initiatives and constant review of staffing levels. A plaque will be placed on the shelter with this information, and also to remember their very valued member Pam Gamble who sadly passed away. WALKING TRACK REPAIRED The damaged portion of the 1km track that follows the Canungra Creek from Lions Park to Picnic Place has been repaired and is open again for those avid walkers in the community. Maps are again available at Canungra Information Centre. The task involves removal of a large amount of soil and placement of 20,000 tonne of rock to rebuild the road to its previous configuration. I thank residents for their continued patience while the Goat Track remains closed. Youth Justice Legislation Recently announced changes to youth justice legislation will require juvenile graffiti vandals to clean up graffiti painted on public property such as parks, halls and playground equipment - our community deserves better than to have our equipment damaged in this way. By putting these offenders to work to clean up their mess under the supervision of local councils and community groups, young offenders will take responsibility for their actions and the damage they cause to the community. Queensland Budget The 2013/14 Queensland Budget was delivered earlier this month. The budget contains $2.1 billion for repair of roads this year and is focussed on rebuilding our economy and making our economy and communities resilient for the future. CT’s Movie Review

The Great Gatsby

By Chloe Pickard Rated: M. Length: 2 hours, 23 mins. Director: Baz Luhrmann. Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Elizabeth Debicki and Amitabh Bachchan. Australian director Baz Luhrmann has controversially made The Great Gatsby in 3D, but as I saw the film in 2D, I can’t comment on how 3D changed the film. While new technology may have caused some complaints, the plotline remains mostly the same as F Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel. Young Nick Carraway arrives in New York, ready to make a living in the bonds industry. But he is soon distracted by his eccentric neighbor Jay Gatsby, who throws massive parties that attract almost all of New York. When Nick strikes up an acquaintance with Gatsby, he discovers Gatsby has been in love with Nick’s cousin Daisy since he met her five years ago. Daisy is now married to wealthy Tom Buchanan, but Gatsby thinks he can win her back. After Moulin Rouge (2001), I don’t think audiences should expect historical

realism from Luhrmann’s films but the decadent atmosphere of the 1920s was recreated well. The modern-day soundtrack was exciting and worked in favour of the partying scenes. Carey Mulligan has a standout turn as the fragile Daisy and Joel Edgerton is excellent as Tom Buchanan. The Great Gatsby was originally made for the screen by Paramount Pictures in 1974 with Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby and Mia Farrow as Daisy. The film was said to be lacklustre and dull at the time, but did reasonably at the box office, costing $6 million to produce but taking in over $30 million worldwide. Fans of the book, and I count myself among them, may wince at some of the changes made to the story but overall The Great Gatsby is an enjoyable, if not classic experience.

Feature Plant at Mt Tamborine Botanic Gardens

Brazilian Red Cloak - (Megaskepasma Erythrochlamys) Now that’s something of a high flying botanical name, but in some ways it suits this flamboyant plant originally from Venezuela. This evergreen shrub which grows to 2.5 metres has masses of deep red spikes with flecks of white which hold for weeks on end. Situated at the side of the Hydrangea garden it can’t be missed for its exotic showy flowering. Plant them in open sun or semi-shade and they suit any soil type. Look also at the gorgeous late Autumn foliage on the Crape Myrtles (Lagerstroemia) on the Cherry Walk and the great Liquidambars, among others, which have been particularly beautiful this year due to the recent cold spell. The Rose Garden is also looking good with a late lovely blooming. See you at the Gardens soon – it’s a magic time.

The rain didn’t stop the markets at Canungra on 30th June when 42 stallholders gathered in the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Organiser Sue Kenna said she was prepared for the rain and left the stage in the hall free in case stalls needed to come inside. “The crowd was steady throughout the day, but probably not as many people as I hoped due to the bad weather,” said Sue. “All the stallholders were happy with the day and everyone said what a good atmosphere it was in the room. Next month we have 50 stalls so it is great to see it growing so quickly.” There was plenty of variety this month with cakes, home made jams and relishes, local produce, jewellery, candles, massage, flowers and health food. The local Scout group catered for breakfast and lunch in the canteen with a sausage sizzle, bacon and egg rolls and soup to keep everyone warm in the cold weather. Sue said the low stall fees are a big drawcard for stall holders. Fees are only $10 for a two metre by two metre stall in the hall or a three metre by three metre stall outside. Profits from stall fees are going to the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Entry to the markets for members of the public is free of charge. Markets are held on the last Sunday of each month, however in November and December the dates have changed due to previous hall bookings. Check The Canungra Times’ date claimer for details. 3rd June - Green Team Sausage Sizzle The Green Team hosted their first sausage sizzle at the school, and. raised approximately $250 to go towards resources for the school’s vegetable patches. 3rd June - Reader’s Cup Heather Moriarty, Macey Young, Amelia Ingram, Elizabeth Worrall and Katie Hastie competed in the Reader’s Cup. Over the past two months these students have been given the task of reading six books (chosen by the Reader’s Cup organisers). They then faced six questions about each of the books. Out of a group of twenty-two schools, our team came 6th. This is a wonderful achievment.

This was a great opportunity for young musicians to gain experience playing in a band under the direction and tutelage of the Department’s talented Instrumental Music Teachers. 23rd June - Green Team At Zest Fest The School’s Green Team had a table at Zest Fest which was held at the Hall Graceleigh Park Beechmont. The day proved to be a great opportunity for parents, students and staff to engage with the greater community and let them know what the CSS Green Team is up to! Thanks to Colleen and David Murphy, Linda Riggs, Mia Staver, Kasey Wilson, Sophia and Olivia Raymont, Fiona, Hayley and Aaron Williams for their fantastic efforts on the day.

Canungra Creek Restoration Project The Canungra Creek Restoration project is an initiative that recognises the importance of protecting and enhancing the local environment. The project aims to enhance biodiversity on the Creek and provides students and community members with the opportunity to participate. The objectives of the Project are: • To manage weed species and increase the biodiversity of the gallery rainforest and creek ecosystem. • Engage community members, school children and staff to contribute to the management of our local environment, and increase the capacity of such to undertake weed management and revegetation works. • Undertake community activity days and workshops that provide the opportunity for increasing knowledge in regards Riparian Restoration techniques. • Streamline environmental and cultural awareness learning into the school curriculum. • Install monitoring programs such as Photopoint and Water Quality Monitoring to evaluate project success. The project will enhance the wildlife corridor and provide habitat and food sources for native fauna, reptile, bird and aquatic species. The site is on the Canungra Creek and forms part of the catchment of the Logan and Albert Rivers. Enhancement and protection of the creek bank will assist with the prevention of erosion and improve water quality in the Canungra Creek system and have positive downstream effects. Canungra State School students are involved in many aspects of the restoration project. Practical experience, education and appreciation of the natural environment leads to positive attitudes to conservation and restoration throughout the school and extend to the local community. Working Bees are hosted each term with the focus on weed management or revegetation depending on the needs of the site. Community members are welcome to attend. Canungra - the Best Town for Children?

Teacher Trish O’Connell posed this question to Year 5 students in preparation for the NAPLAN tests. These are some of the responses the students wrote:

Canungra - Jake I know Canungra is not very crowded so you will not hear traffic. It is very quiet so you will not be woken up at night. There are hand gliders so you can have a look at the cool colours and people on them. The first reason why you would not like to live in the city is the traffic because you will be late for jobs, school, and soccer games. But not at Canungra because hardly anyone comes past. The second reason why you wouldn’t like noisy places is because in the morning you will be woken up and at night too by cars, bus and trucks. But at Canungra you will not hear any of noisy things only the relaxing sounds of birds. The third reason why you would love Canungra is the hand gliders. You hardly see them at any places. You can see cool things from hand gliders here at Canungra. Canungra is good because you will not get lost or have bad traffic. So Canungra is an amazing place for children to live. Canungra - Kasey Do you live in Canungra? Well I do and it’s awesome. We have an awesome chemist and a great school. Even ask the bikies (nearly the whole street is packed with motorbikes on the weekend!) Well let’s talk about the chemist. Face it the chemist here is the best chemist around (mainly because my family runs it!). My Pa (the owner) and Johnny (my uncle and the second owner) give you free things sometimes. And they have all the medical care you could possibly need. The school has an amazing library which has all the books you could possibly read! From ghosts and spirits to plants

and animals. Also the people who work at the school are kind and caring and to make things even better you can have loads of adventures. OK so now let’s talk about the motorbikes. As I said before nearly the whole street is packed with motorbikes on the weekend (especially on Sunday!) I guess that’s because we also have amazing cafes! Oh and because they would want to get our Canungra Times (it has all the information you need to know about Canungra including what was happening that week or what has already happened!) Now if you’re still not convinced then I don’t know what will! But just remember CANUNGRA IS THE BEST TOWN EVER!! Canungra - Reilly I believe Canungra is definitely the best place for children to live in because it has everything that you need like food stores, restaurants, sporting grounds and also an awesome school and lots, lots more. Canungra is an amazing place because it is very quiet which is good. On the weekends it is noisy in the mornings because all the motorbikes come for breakfast, so they must like the food and it ok because you get to check out the all the cool motorbikes. Another really awesome thing about Canungra is that it is close to all the facilities that you need, for example sporting grounds, swimming pool, a local library and the best school ever! Canungra is surely the best town ever because it has very fantastic restaurants like the pub, local cafes, bakery, Funky Dory, pizza shop and all the restaurants have the best service ever. I recommend that if you are looking for a place to move to or visit you should definitely go to Canungra instead of a big, busy city like Brisbane.

Centre Director Karen Price said it was a lovely day with lots of parent helpers. “We stopped at the Ambulance Station and got a tour of the whole station as well as trying out the seats, stretcher beds and sirens in the cars. We then stopped at Bean In for our morning tea. Our third and final stop was the Police Station where Constable Craig had a chat with the children and spoke about the old police station, horse stables and watch house. It was a great day out in our local Community,” she said.

Eat Local Week - 23 to 30 June

Canungra State School’s Green Team were at Zest Fest

Eat Local Week kicked off on 23rd June with the forth annual Zest Fest on Beechmont. Over 500 people came from all over the Scenic Rim, Gold Coast and Brisbane, to take part in workshops, taste local produce and enjoy the music. Organiser Sally McKinnon said the committee especially loved the growing participation of Canungra stall holders. “We’re very fond of our nearest village and love the collaboration,” said Sally. During the week, Binna Burra Lodge held Bush Tucker Presentations in D J Smith Park on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Guides from Binna Burra introduced people to some of the tastes and smells of the surrounding area. On Wednesday 26th June the Producers

Dinner was held at Wallaby Ridge Retreat. Robyn Fortescue of Wallaby Ridge said guest speaker Greg Dennis from Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk told of “a journey of risk and passion”. Guests enjoyed a local food/slow food dinner sourcing from the garden, farm gates and community gardens. Co-hosted with Kate Raymont from Hinterland Harvest, Robyn and John from Wallaby Ridge organised a great night of networking, laughter and great food. On the final weekend many people headed to Aratula for the Winter Harvest Festival on Saturday, but in Canungra the Information Centre hosted tasting tables outside with local jams, macadamia nuts, chocolate and home baked goods for locals and tourists alike to sample.

Rev Valerie Hoare has happily settled in as the new priest at St Luke’s and we are very pleased to have her and husband Doug in our midst. The St Luke’s congregation celebrated Valerie’s arrival with a very pleasant Sunday lunch at John and Anne King’s where she was able to get to know the people of her church on a one to one basis. The Wednesday morning Cuppa, Chat and Craft group is growing in popularity so if you are in town, or passing St Luke’s any Wednesday morning from 9.30am feel free to drop in. Is there anyone in the community who would be interested in playing the organ for our Sunday service whilst our regular organist Anne is away at various times over the next six months? We enjoy singing as part of our weekly service, but without music it becomes difficult. I would be very happy to hear from anyone who may like to help us out over this period. Funding For Local Community Groups

Millions of dollars have been provided across Queensland through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (round 76) and the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund (round 81) grants. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause welcomed the allocation of $197,893 for ten Beaudesert electorate groups under the two funding rounds, including Canungra Area Golf Club, Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre and Tamborine Rural Fire Brigade. “These grant programs provide much needed funds for community groups to help them provide the facilities and activities which make our communities better places, and I commend all of these groups for the wonderful work they do” Mr Krause said. Canungra Area Golf Club was granted $29,909.09 to a purchase a demountable building to replace the clubhouse which was demolished last month. Tamborine Rural Fire Brigade will receive $17,932.18 to install a solar system. The Tamborine Mountain Community Men’s Shed Association Inc will receive $14,500.00 to complete a shed fitout and purchase tools. The Tamborine Tennis Club Inc. was allocated $31,718.18 to construct toilet facilities. The Tamborine Mountain Creative Arts Inc was granted $3240.00 to install vinyl flooring. Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Inc will receive $15,500 to install a disabled toilet.

Mixed Fours Canungra Bowls Club held the monthly Mixed Fours Day with 14 teams taking part on Sunday 23rd June. The overall winner was Broadbeach with 4 + 29. Second was Helensvale with 4 + 17. Canungra Owls Support Community Bank Initiative The Owls’ committee support moves to establish a Bendigo Community Bank in the township. The business model provides for 80% of profits of the wholly community owned and run bank to go back to local clubs, charities and worthwhile endeavours. Owls families and supporters that are in a position to be able to pledge, to become a customer or purchase shares in this venture will be supporting an enterprise that can potentially provide enormous benefits to our community into the future. The Under 15 Gold team sits in equal first place on the ladder as we go to print. What a great effort. You can support this team at Moriarty Park at 6.15pm on Friday the 12th, 19th and 26th July. You can be assured of some pretty good football being played. Although the Under 15 Green team are not yet in finals contention they have enjoyed three stirring wins so far and are sticking together and enjoying their season under coach John Harrison. Keep it up boys and girls. Under 6 coach Kellie Linnehan reports that they are enjoying their season and improving with every game. Well done to Zoe, Luke, Clayton, Bereket, Amy and Phoenix. The Under 7’s are also improving and coach Ricky is very happy with the efforts of Angus, Harry, Ethan, Nathan, Tyler and Charli. Let’s finish off the season strongly! The Under 8’s are improving with every outing and coach Josh Bell-McNee and the parents and players were ecstatic when they won their first game on 22nd June. The joyful

The Canungra Hotel continues to allow the club to conduct meat tray raffles every second Sunday lunchtime and we require volunteers to continue this vital fundraiser which allows our fees to remain low.
