Division Three Councillor Virginia West was elected as the Scenic Rim’s new Deputy Mayor at the first meeting of the new Council on 14th May 2012. Virginia said she was grateful to the community who had re-elected her for their support. “My commitment for the next four years will be to the strong financial position that the Council and community had created,” she said.

“My focus will be on employment. I found when I was door knocking that people want good jobs close to home,” she said. The recent elections resulted in five new councillors in the Scenic Rim with only Virginia and Mayor John Brent returned to office. The new Councillors are: Nigel Waistell (Division 1), Nadia O’Carroll (Division 2), Jennifer Sanders (Division 4), Rick Stanfield

(Division 5) and Duncan McInnes (Division 6). Virginia was first elected to the former Beaudesert Shire Council in 2004. She was re-elected in 2008 as a member of the inaugural Scenic Rim Regional Council and was returned for a second term at the recent council elections. “I am very honoured to represent all residents of Division 3 and to serve as the deputy mayor,” she said.

The Search is Over - Dr Andrew Rees Joins ‘Dr Dave’

After a long search, Dr Dave Christiansen welcomes Dr Andy Rees to the team at Canungra Valley Medical. Formerly from Launceston, Tasmania, Andy and his wife moved to the Gold Coast to be closer to their son and daughter-in-law who are expecting their first child. Andy has had a similar career path to ‘Dr Dave’ - he worked for the South Australian police force for many years as a prosecutor and said he was always fascinated by the complex medical evidence he came across. “I thought it was complex at the time, but from what I have learned since it was probably quite simple,” he said. Asked whether the move from the police force to a General Practioner was unusual, Andy said there are still some parallels between the two professions. “As an investigator I was always searching for clues, for answers to crimes,” he said, “I am doing the same thing as a GP, finding out the symptoms people have and working out what is causing the problem. It is about helping people - both in the police force and in the medical profession. Andy enjoys the variety of work that a GP comes across. He has worked in private clinics as well as hospitals and has a special interest in skin care and skin cancers. Although Canungra Valley Medical has equipment and expertise to assist in monitoring skin cancers, Andy said the best detectors are often wives and girlfriends who tell their partners to get an unusual or suspicious mole checked by their doctor. Andy has also been trained in the insertion and removal of hormonal contraceptive implants which work in a similar way to contraceptive pills. Instead of being in a pill, the hormone is in a small, thin flexible rod, inserted just under the skin on the inside of a woman’s arm. The implant steadily releases a small amount of hormone. which prevents pregnancy for three years. “It is important to remember that no contraceptive is 100% effective but the implant eliminates the problem of forgetting to take the pill or gastroenteritis interfering in it’s effectiveness,” said Andy, “Out of 2000

women, one will fall pregnant - what we can’t tell is who that will be.” So far, Andy’s experiences at Canungra have been very positive. He said he finds the people stoic, but is delighted to see concerned parents bringing their children in. “I prefer to see someone bring their child in for a minor complaint to be checked - sometimes there is a major problem and it gives me the opportunity to catch it early, he said.” But, like everywhere, Andy says people in Canungra want to be looked after - something Dr Dave and Dr Andy are happy to do.

During the recent national Information Technology in Aged Care (ITAC) Conference in Mebourne, Star Gardens was awarded Highly Commended in the Best Implementation of the Year Awards for Under 150 places. Star Gardens has, over the last two years, implemented five major innovative technologies across both clinical and administrative areas, all with the aim of enhancing the residents quality of care and providing staff with cutting-edge technology to help them in their tasks . One of these technologies was the introduction of a hands-free voice activated communications system, which has enabled all staff across the organisation to be in direct contact at all times with each other. This, especially in time-critical circumstances, saves staff having to leave a resident unattended to go and find assistance or another staff member. Another is the clinical and documentation management system that enables all residents files to be ‘connected’ with doctors and pharmacies ensuring invaluable up-to-date information is always available. Errol Gray sang songs such as ‘I’m A Golf Tragic’ and ‘Neville The Know It All’. The poetry was both funny and stirring, Jack Drake giving an ode to war heroes and their horses at the end of his set and Geoff Sharp reciting ‘Sweeney’ by Henry Lawson. All poets said they hoped that the clubhouse would still remain standing for many years to come before leading the crowd in ‘Home Among The Gum Trees’. Jack Drake, Geoff Sharp and Ray Essery have all won the Golden Gumleaf Award, as well Geoff Sharp being the 2004 Leonard Teale Memorial Award winner and Jack Drake winning Bush Poet of the Year in 2001.

Binna Burra Sky Lodges Opened

From the vision of founders Arthur Groom and Romeo Lahey and the modern Binna Burra Lodge Ltd, the 12 million dollar Sky Lodges are an investment to boost tourism to the area. Yugembah tribe elder Aunty Ruby Rose opened the event with traditional storytelling. Chairman of Binna Burra Lodge Ltd, Hal Morris, said Binna Burra was about the firsts that had been tried there - such as the first interpretive bush walks. “We needed to make it new, fresh and relevant to the current generation,” said Hal. Romeo Lahey’s daughter, Ann Neale, wished the owners of the lodges the greatest pleasure in coming to the resort.

“This is a historic day for Binna Burra,” said Ann. Former board director and son of Arthur Groom, Richard Groom, said the essential question was to ask was what the pioneers would think of the new works. His brothers Tony and Don were present, as were Shane O’Reilly from O’Reillys, joint venture partner Tim Midhurst, Mayor John Brent, Queensland Tourism Daniel Gschwind and State Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause. In Brief... Condolences Canungra Valley Medical Practice Nurse, Di Goodwin, passed away on Thursday 24th May after a battle with cancer. Di had been at the surgery since October 2010 and had helped a lot of people in her time during that time. Di and her husand, Sid, have four children. Dr David Christiansen said Di was a lovely, kind-hearted person who was a great help and support to him in the business. Canungra Valley Medical are fundraising for Di’s family and would welcome any donations or assistance from members of the public. Di will be sadly missed by patients and staff. Bellissima Guesthouse, in it’s day one of the finest hotels in Queensland

Canungra’s History Canungra Hotel The site of the Canungra Hotel in Kidston Street was originally occupied by a guesthouse named ‘Bellissima’. Built by Romeo Lahey in 1916 to plans drawn up by J H Burley, ‘Bellissima’ was named after the ship that brought the Lahey family to Sydney from Ireland in 1861. This unlicensed two-storey guesthouse had its own electricity plant, a water and septic system and was considered one of the finest hotels in Queensland. Over the years, many visiting dignitaries were accommodated there, including the State Governor and the Premier. A feature of the dining room was a huge table made from a single slab of rosewood. The guesthouse was operated by the Lahey firm until 1927, when it was taken over by David Lahey, who sold it to Bernard William Conaghan. Mr Conaghan renamed it the ‘Canungra Hotel’ and was granted a licence in 1928, making it the first licensed premises in Canungra. After the hotel was licensed, a bar was built on the eastern side of the building, with a billiard room next to the bar. The Conaghans left in 1934 and Mrs Cronin became licensee, followed by

Cyril Aylemore in 1937. Unfortunately, the beautiful old wooden building was destroyed by fire on Friday 22nd January 1937. At that time the building was owned by Mr Shaw of Sydney, who then rebuilt it in its present form. The new hotel bar was opened for the first time by Mrs Keating and daughters, the new licensees on Thursday 9th October 1937. In the war years Mrs Earl was in charge of the hotel, followed by the Jorms, then A D and A F Johnston. As befits a building with nearly a century of history, the hotel is reputed to host a couple of resident ghosts. Today the Canungra Hotel is owned by Walsh and Associates and is a landmark of the town, popular with locals and tourists alike.

Clubhouse Condemned Celebrating 60 Years

Canungra Golf Club is facing the possibility of their clubhouse being torn down by the Defence Support Group after forty one years of use. The land the Club stands on is owned by the Commonwealth, although maintenance of the grounds is paid for by the golf club. Chris Hawkins of Defence Public Affairs Queensland said the building was ‘beyond economic repair’ and that the Defence Department could not justify using taxpayers’ money to fund the golf club. Independent contractor George Frame inspected the clubhouse and found that while it needed minor repairs the building was still sound. The Defence Department, however stated that repairs would run into the thousands due to the materials used for the construction of the original building. Neil Connolly and Sandy Connolly, who became custodians in 1997, said that the clubhouse was vital to funding the club’s activities and employing groundskeeper. “We’ll fold in twelve months without a clubhouse,” they said. Foundation member 86-year-old Irene Mills said that there were no other local golf courses around. “Shelia (her sister) and I would have to give up golf if the club closed,” she said. Following a meeting with the Defence the Club is looking in to grants and fundraising to repair or replace the clubhouse. The Club has over 100 local members and weekend players regularly come from the Gold Coast.

Giving Back to the Community

Volunteering has been traditionally associated with assistance for charities. Today though, tens of thousands of Queenslanders volunteer their time and skills to help a broad range of community organisations to operate. While volunteering is a way of giving back to the community, it also provides an opportunity to keep skills current and meet new friends. The Canungra RSL is establishing a Volunteer Group and invites interested locals to be a part of it. The RSL is well known for the commemorative services it conducts on Anzac and Remembrance Days but its charter includes looking after the welfare of veterans, serving men and women and their families, in our community, and encouraging youth activities. Being a not-for-profit organisation, the RSL relies on members and volunteers for a range of activities from selling badges and raffle tickets to assisting with the Anzac Day gunfire breakfast. Local couple Les and Iris Coomber celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with friends and family at the Canungra RSL Services Club on Saturday 12th May. The couple received well-wishes on their Diamond anniversary from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Governor General Quentin Bryce and Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Les and Iris were joined by family and friends from around the globe including Member for Beaudesert John Krause, David Allen from Haver Hill in Suffolk (UK), Robert and Julie Beezley from Biloela, Garth and Liz Pearse from Maroochydore, their grandchildren Jonathan and Angela Gassman from Bundaberg, Zena Kington from Bellbird Park and their youngest daughter Deidre and her husband Brian Doellel from Mundubbera. The couple’s romance began in Essex, England. Les Coomber was twenty-one years old and not long discharged from the army, while Iris was just seventeen. Iris had gone to a dance with Mr Coomber’s sister. Les turned up with another girl, but was taken with his brideto-be at first sight and knew from that moment they would be married. The couple spent their courtship living five miles apart - he at Dunton and she at Horndon-on-the-Hill. Mr Coomber would walk five miles to her house and walk her five miles back to his house.

They were married at Dunton Wayletts Church in Essex on 10th May 1952. The couple had two daughters, Linda and Deirdre, before moving to Australia in 1960. Mr Coomber worked in Brisbane as a prison officer before the family went back to the United Kingdom in 1963. On the first white Christmas back in England, the couple asked their daughters what they wanted to do, to which they replied, “Can we go to the beach?”. The family made their second and final antipodean move, setting up a new life in Sydney. They worked and saved, setting up businesses throughout Sydney, before deciding to opt for a quieter life at Mundubbera. Fate then took the Coombers through a trying course of events. The couple ran the Mundubbera Cafe and later the local picture theatre, both of which burnt down. Daughter Linda said it “broke their backs” to have two fires in twenty years in the same town. They moved to Bundaberg in 2001 and more recently to Canungra where they enjoy spending time with their daugher and son-in-law, John and Linda Hinchcliffe. They have five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, with another on the way!

Around 75 supporters of the Mount Tamborine Girl Guides descended on the Zamia Theatre on Saturday 19 May adorned with some very crazy hats! The night was full of trivia, raffles and an auction to help the girls raise funds to travel to Tasmania for their FanTAStic Jamboree next January. And what a night it was! Team ‘Ugly as a Hatful’ took out the honours winning the nail biting tie breaker, as quiz master Travis Dunn (previously featured at the St Bernard’s School trivia night) once again created a gripping trivia twist finale which sorted the wheat from the chaff! The prize for the craziest hat went to Tarla Elwood whose magnificent mad hatter creation was sourced from treasures in her attic. Ricky Finglas and Danielle Hornsby were married at St Luke’s Anglican Church, Canungra on Saturday 14th April 2012. Danielle is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Greg Hornsby (formerly of Canungra). Ricky is the son of Mr Kevin Finglas and Mrs Jenny Hickson (both formerly of Beaudesert). Danielle was attended by Angela Harrison, Elizabeth Hornsby, Kelly Street, Charli Prosser and Kori-Lee Hornsby. Ricky’s attendants were Chris Appleton, Justin Graham and Justin Stevens. Danielle’s gown featured beading on the bodice and gown. The ceremony at St Luke’s held special meaning for the couple as Danielle’s grandparent’s, Mr and Mrs Jesse Daniels, were married at St Luke’s as were her parents, Greg and Sharyn Hornsby. Danielle and Ricky now reside on the Gold Coast.

Beechmont’s Zest Fest on Sunday 24th June is set to rock the afternoon away with a great line up of local music. Afro Pulse will get people grooving from midday with African drumming and dancing. 1ST JULY - IN THE SCENIC RIM Where Does Your Food Come From?

Eat Local Week will focus attention on the origin of our food and encourage Scenic Rim restaurants, cafes, tourism businesses and locals to develop closer links to their local food producers. Eat Local Week will run from 24th June to 1st July throughout the Scenic Rim and will celebrate the region’s food producers, farmers, chefs and anyone associated with the local food industry. The week-long food event was born out of the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Local Living Economies program and is a celebration of the local food industry. This is the second year the event has been held and it will feature workshops, events and farm tours designed to help locals better understand where their food comes from. Robyn Fortescue of Wallaby Ridge Retreat at Canungra has completely transformed the way she sources food for guests at her Bed and Breakfast. The turning point came a few years ago when she took part in a sustainable small business program which asked participants to source food only from a 100-mile (160km) radius. “I could see the waste from running a B&B

and when you start to look at where your food comes from you realise how far it has travelled,” says Robyn. “Our eggs were coming from New Zealand, our rice was from overseas and a lot of our fruit and vegetables were from interstate. “We have brought our supply as close to home as we can.” Initially Robyn offered guests a local breakfast basket, packed with food that was sourced from the Scenic Rim. Now she’s extended her offer to the dinner

table. The fruit and vegetables are either handpicked from the edible garden she has planted on site, or they’re sourced from local growers. Free-range chooks now roam the property and provide fresh eggs and the meat is supplied by Scenic Rim butchers. Robyn bakes bread and wine is sourced from a nearby vineyard. “A 160km radius from us takes in places like Stanthorpe, northern NSW and the Gold Coast so we have a pretty broad base to pull our resources from,” she says. “We’re in a pretty unique area really. Our guests who have an interest in food really appreciate what we’re doing. We start talking about our food and it goes from there. People like to come to an area to experience the local food and see where it has been grown.” During Eat Local Week Robyn will offer a Local Slow Food Dinner on 28th June, for anyone with an interest in sourcing, growing or just eating local food. The cost is $35 per person, prepaid by 21st June. Robyn is also holding a tour of her Edible Garden on Thursday 28th June. The cost is $10 and includes morning tea and a discussion. Rita also released her book “A Keepsake of Memories” compiling a lifetime of stories, poetry and local history. The entire family extends their thanks to Tamlyn & helpers for their dedication and hardwork in putting this together. A wonderful day was had by all with the children playing by the river and adults reminiscing of times gone by. Congratulations Mum and Nan we all love you dearly.

CT’s Movie Review - The Avengers

By Chloe Pickard The Avengers was directed by popular creator of series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly - Joss Whedon, who also wrote the script. It’s good for both comic fans and those who haven’t seen any of the prior films or read comics. It’s not too dark but is still surprisingly emotional. Screen time is split admirably among the characters, with every member of the team getting their own moments to shine. One of my favourites was Mark Ruffalo in a standout turn as the Hulk; he is both vulnerable and plausible. The villain Loki (Tom Hiddlestone) is truly vicious. Unlike some summer blockbusters that go on for far too long, you won’t feel the 155 minutes dragging. The action isn’t filmed in the now standard shaky cam and you can tell what’s going on in all the scenes, which is always easier to follow. A great film for anyone who enjoys action or superhero movies.

Recently a friend of a friend posted on facebook, asking if the kindy was closed on Monday. This sent a few people into a panic (ok, mainly me) trying to work out whether it was actually a public holiday, primary school student free day or just a day that the kindy was closed. Googling ‘mass hysteria caused by rumours’ I found in Guadalajara earlier this year, parents kept their children away from school because of a false, quickly spreading rumor that drug gangs were planning to kidnap students. In India, people in several parts of Uttar Pradesh spent a sleepless night and police remained on high alert as a rumour spread by SMS that those who slept would turn into stone spread like wildfire. Ok, those seem extreme, if a little odd, but then who can remember when there has been a run on banks because of rumours that banks are going broke? Ah, rumours, thankfully we in Canungra are immune to such things! Canungra was one of the film unit’s bases, from which they trekked up into the Lamington Plateau. He had also made scenes for his 1935 feature film, “Heritage” in the Canungra area, and scenes of Australian troops in New Guinea warfare were made in Canungra Gorge, for the final sequence of his war film “Rats of Tobruk” (1944). Chauvel filmed in many parts of Australia, and I believe that highlighting some of those places is of interest to people living in the area. I am currently running my own website: www.chauvelcinema.com which is based on a theme of ‘place’. I am following the most significant locations in which my father made his films. Currently the website is featuring Currans Hill, NSW, and the film “Rats of Tobruk”, but in June I will be changing the location to Canungra and the Scenic Rim. If anyone there has a clear photo of Canungra Village as it is today, I would be grateful for the use of one on the website, with of course acknowledgement. Bingo! at Moriarty Park

Canungra Soccer Club’s first bingo night on Friday 4th May was the start of regular games if the community support continues. Caller Peter Teveluwe kept the game lively and tables were filled with players. Prizes were donated by Food Works. Organiser Bren Dalby said the bingo games would aid the soccer club in replacing used equipment. They could also be used to fundraise for other organisations prepared to help set up, source prizes and run the evening. “The plan is for the bingo nights to become a regular community event,” she said, “We would like to have a game every three weeks if there is enough interest.” The beneficiary of the next Bingo night is Tamborine Horse Sanctuary. The date has been tentatively set for 22nd June and will be confirmed on notices at Foodworks, Canungra Newagency and Post Office. Bren said it is difficult to set dates in advance as Moriarty Park may have a function booked at short notice which will take priority. “Their hospitality is greatly appreciated, but if they can make dollars on the night

we have to work around them!” she said. Tickets on the night are : • 3 tickets in 10 games (36 chances to win) - $12, • 6 tickets in 10 games (72 chances to win) - $20 Dabber pens are available for $2.50 or participants can bring their own. Bingo will run for approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours from 7pm. Children are most welcome, providing they are not noisy at the “eyes down, look in” bits! “Some folk are sensationally serious about their Bingo!” said Bren, “Pete Tiv was brilliant as ‘caller’ for the first time and we hope to have him back!” Soccer Club Committee member, David Baker said everyone he spoke with had a thoroughly enjoyable night - even if they didn’t go home with a chook voucher or a pack of Weetbix!” “Dale Mahony ‘came with a six pack and went home with an eight pack’ - he had the toilet rolls under his arm!” said David. Not surprised this 6x4 garden trailer is attracting a lot of attention around town. Seems the RSL received some very generous donations and is raffling the trailer and its contents worth over $2,500 at just $2 a ticket. Making 2012 Your Best Year Yet!

Yesterday I went for a bush walk in the Serengeti National Park … and it was fantastic. Not only for the gaming experience but for the reminder it sent out too! Let me explain … During this safari in East Africa, my family and I have been totally spoilt for game variety and have experienced it all from the comfort of our safari vehicle. Yesterday was a bit different, when hubby and I ventured out on foot with the able and armed game rangers. Enter one angry, monstrous, ton of grumpy looking hippo and there is no adrenaline rush like it! There were no words from the hippo, only a growling tone, and a fierce looking face and body language which packed a punch. A bit of a bully if I do say so myself, even if we were on his territory. Which leads me to this month’s article, a few facts about the human communication breakdown percentages and how little of what we actually utter counts. Communication studies have broken it down as follows: 55 % = body language (the hippo got that right) 38 % = tonality of voice (hippo got that spot on too) Only 7% in the communication process is attributed to the words we use. Makes sense of how my kids have been able to play and integrate with kids who have no cultural connection to them what so ever! A point to ponder next time we open our ‘traps’ – heed the body language and tonality in your voice. Together they give away far more clues than the words which you use. Macular Degeneration Is Hereditary - Keep Your Family In The Picture

Research released for Macular Degeneration Awareness Week, 27 May – 2 June 2012, has revealed Australians significantly underestimate the role of family history in developing Macular Degeneration, the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in Australia. North Tamborine optometrist, Nicky Carr says “All those at risk, which are those over 50 years or with a family history of Macular Degeneration, should have their eyes tested and macula checked.” “Family history is a risk factor, just as it is with other conditions such as heart disease and breast cancer. This is why it is critical for family members to also have their eyes tested and macula checked.” “We also want Australians to know Macular Degeneration is not a normal part of ageing. Never ignore any changes in vision and always seek help immediately as early detection is critical to saving sight,” says Nicky. The national survey commissioned by the Macular Degeneration Foundation (MDF)

found nearly three in four Australians (71%) did not correctly identify the role that family history plays in developing the disease. This is despite research showing there is a 50% chance of developing Macular Degeneration when a family history of the disease is present. The research also found an estimated 2.1 million Australians over the age of 50 years, those most at risk, are unaware that having a parent with Macular Degeneration increases their chances of developing the disease. Alarmingly, one in three Australians also believe that vision loss caused by Macular Degeneration is just a normal part of ageing. CEO of the Macular Degeneration Foundation, Julie Heraghty said, “The results of the research are of great concern as about one in seven Australians over the age of 50 (one million people) have some evidence of Macular Degeneration, a chronic disease with a prevalence four times that of Dementia and more than half that of Diabetes.

“We want all Australians and their families to see a future and not have precious memories robbed by this disease. “There are simple steps everyone can take to reduce their risk of developing Macular Degeneration and we want people to start by talking to their family about risk reduction measures.” “This includes having an eye test, adopting a healthy lifestyle and eating foods that are good for eye health including fish, foods with low GI and dark green leafy vegetables,” said Heraghty. “We are calling on all Australians to make their family’s macular health a priority by having their eyes tested and macula checked, especially those who are most at risk, that is, people over the age of 50 and those with a family history of the disease.” said Heraghty. CANUNGRA UNITING CHURCH 2012 FETE By Robyn Lee The Annual Canungra Uniting Church Fete was a great place to hunt out a bargain, or find a great plant or cake to take home. On Saturday 19th May, the day started out very chilly but by mid morning had turned into a glorious day. There were Devonshire teas or a burger to enjoy while people browsed around the stalls. Over $2,700 was raised from the event. This would not be possible without the generous donations from members of the community. The Canungra Uniting Church would like to thank all those who helped to make the day so successful.

NEW COUNCIL TERM BEGINS It is a great pleasure and a privilage to be representing the Canungra community, Division 3 and of course the Scenic Rim Regional Council for a third term, not only as Councillor but as Deputy Mayor and I look forward to working with you all. With five new councillors there are a lot of training sessions scheduled for us all and then we have the Budget discussions commencing as well so it’s a busy time ahead. LOCAL ROAD UPDATES A number of residents have asked me about the the very rough condition of sections of Coburg Rd and Illinbah Rd and I have an update for you. The section of Coburg Rd on either side of the causeway was damaged in the 2010 rain event which meant referral to the Queensland Restoration Authority.Repair of this area is in Construction Package No 3 which is due to commence in July. The contract is currently being advertised and I will be able to update you further once the construction programme is finalised. In the meantime the damaged section will be monitored and patched as required but you will notice that with the constant water leakage from under the damaged bituman the patching easily peels off. The section of Illinbah Rd between Jerome Bridge and Flying Fox Bridge has been approved for restoration work following the 2011 Declared Rain Event but also suffered further damage in the more recent 2012 February Rain Event. A submission to the Queensland Restoration Authority has been submitted and Council awaits appproval to proceed with the repair necessary. This section of road is also being monitored closely and patched when necessary. Unfortunately the exact time for recitication works is not availble yet. HEALTHY and ACTIVE COMMUNITY EXPO This intitiative to showcase our healthy community has come from the councils Sport and Recreation Plan and is being hosted by Sport and Recreation Queensland and Queensland Population and Health It will be held at the new Moto Park, Goan Rd, Wyaralong (just on from Wyaralong Dam on the Boonah Rd) on Sunday 3rd June from 10am until 2pm. A number of key sports players will be present including Tonie Carroll and Mick De Vere with lots of giveaways and free clinics. OPEN STUDIOS CANUNGRA and BEECHMONT As part of the Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June will be a busy one at Wallaby Ridge Retreat. Tamlyn Geiger and Gerard Walker from Canungra will exhibit their paintings along with Wendi Trulson, Debbie Oberhadt and Joy Drescher showcasing their sculpture, textile design and poetry. This is always a wonderful weekend in such an picturesque environment. Booklets with more about the events are available at the cafes and Information Centre in town. We certainly have some very talented artists in our area. Tamlyn Geiger will also being hosting her exhibition "blackboards of my time" at the Boonah Regional Art Gallery, opening on 9th June until 29th July. All students displayed great enthusiasm and fantastic sportsmanship. The top four students in age groups 10 years to 13 years went on to represent our school at the Gold Coast North District Carnival on Friday 25th May at Runaway Bay Cricket Club. The winning house for the day overall was Flying Fox. with 333 points.

10TH MAY - P&C MOTHER’S DAY STALL Students were given the opportunity to purchase a Mother’s Day gift at the stall provided by the school’s P&C Committee. 15TH TO 17TH MAY - NAPLAN Students in Years 3, 5 and 7 participated in the National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This testing is a small part of the assessment which allows the school to review teaching and to adjust it accordingly, as well as to make informed judgements about student learning.

23RD MAY - NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME Mrs Murphy read “The Very Cranky Bear” by Nick Bland to the school for National Simultaneous Story Time. This was a significant event, as this year is the National Year of Reading. Many of the students in the audience participated by wearing their Cranky Bear masks which they had made. 24TH MAY - UNDER 8’S DAY There were lots of fun activities in the Prep to celebrate Under 8’s Day. 25TH MAY - DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY Selected ten to thirteen year old students competed at the District Cross Country event. 25TH MAY - P&C DAY The school community acknowledged the work and dedication of the P&C Association. The P&C provides valuable assistance to the school by supporting the school tuckshop, uniform shop, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, Easter Parade and raffle, Family Fun Day and the Christmas Family Disco. Without this support, the school would not have many of these services and events. The P&C also raise funds for additional resources for the school, such as the moveable stage for the hall, additional notebooks and computers, and new outdoor play equipment for the Prep area. The school is extremely grateful for the hard work and support of all those who are involved with the P&C, whether by attending the monthly meetings or being a part of the P&C Executive. COMMERCIAL WORM FARM FOR SCHOOL Canungra State School will be the first school in Queensland to have a commercial worm farm. Not only will this help with reducing the food scraps being put into bins, and with teaching students about looking after the environment, it will also produce worm liquid and castings that the school will use on the gardens and ovals. PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON OUR SCHOOL GROUNDS Recently, the school has had some problems with unauthorised entry into the grounds, and the destruction of plants on the creek bank as well as some vegetables from the school gardens. No-one is allowed to be in the school grounds on weekends or holidays unless they have written permission from the school. Putting Our Best (Six) Legs Forward

Canungra State School teacher, Colleen Hensey, didn’t anticipate the effect it would have when she suggested her class, 5/6B, take part in the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk on Tamborine Mountain on 20th May. The Million Paws Walk is the RSPCA’s major fundraiser for the year and is held across Austrlaia on the same day each year. Over 400 dogs and their owners turned out for 2.5km and 5km walks, starting at Geissman Oval and taking in some of the fantastic scenery the Mountain has to offer. Many of the students from 5/6B brought their own dogs or borrowed one from a friend, including Colleen and her dog, Doodle Boy. At the conclusion of the walk, prizes were awarded, including one for Best Six Legs - won by Canungra’s Rod Thorogood and his dog, Chilli. It must have been Rod’s day, because he also won first prize in the raffle, a large flat screen television. Dog and Owner Look Alike was awarded to 5/6B student Jahlan Wakefield and her puppy, Maggie. Organisers were so thrilled by Canungra State School’s participation they publicly thanked Colleen and asked her to make a speech. Collen is a regular participant in the Million Paws walk and is to be congratulated on getting so many of her students to attend the event. It says a lot about the enthusiasm she generates in her students that they put aside other commitments to attend. Million Paws Walk organisers said they will invite schools across the region to attend the event next year. At the time of printing, $132,352 had been raised from the Million Paws Walk in Queensland alone.

The payslip amendments do not apply to employees who are members of defined benefit funds (but employers will be required to report contributions into the accumulation part of hybrid funds). Superannuation Changes

There are a plethora of changes that have been passed by the Parliament or proposed to be passed with respect to superannuation. It is important that employers have an understanding of the new requirements as well as what their obligations are likely to be in the not too distant future, especially since many of the draft changes have relatively short lead times for compliance. Moreover, non-compliance with the new requirements exposes employers to penalties. One of the changes employers should be aware of is: 1st July 2012 – payslip reporting changes On 14 February 2012 the Government released draft exposure Superannuation Legislation Amendment (Stronger Super and Other Measures Bill) (No. 2) Bill 2012; giving information about superannuation contribution for public consultation. The exposure draft proposes to amend an employer’s superannuation payslip reporting obligations with effect from 1st July 2012. With the “go live date” now less than six weeks away employers need to take immediate steps to ensure compliance. Presently employers are obliged to report on employee payslips either entitlements to superannuation “accrued” during the pay-period, or “actual” contributions. Effected 1st July 2012, it is proposed that payslip reporting obligations will change. What are the proposed changes? Employers will need to report, on payslips: • the amount of superannuation contributions; and • the date on which the employer expects to pay them. The change will be applicable to salary or wages paid on or after 1 July 2012.

happens if an employer does not comply and the

proposals become law? If an employer fails to comply with the new requirements they will be liable for a maximum penalty of 30 penalty units. Each penalty unit is valued at $110.

What do employers need to do? We anticipate most employers will need to modify existing payroll software to have the ability to comply with the new payslip requirements. However, given the short lead time, we suggest employers take the following steps to ensure they are in a position to comply by 1 July 2012: • commence reviewing their processes and make any necessary changes; and/or • contact software providers (if applicable). Spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus Punctatus) By Melissa Whitby

This month I have decided to write about an unusual bird species that many Australians may have heard in the Australian bush but have never seen. The bird that I am referring to is the Spotted Pardalote. This extremely small bird is best located by its “chipping” call. Once located, it takes patience to see this bird but when one is finally seen, the observer will be astounded by its beauty. Spotted Pardalote have a distinct white spotted cap/wings, vivid yellow or red rump and yellow underparts. Male birds have more yellow on the throat and females tend to be duller in colour. The race xanthopygus differs to the nominate race by having a golden rump. When identifying this bird in Queensland, it also pays to be aware of the similar species Striated Pardalote. The difference between the species is obvious after a through study of the trusty bird book! The Spotted Pardalote when seen can be observed singly, in pairs or families. When looking for this bird it sometimes pays to find a large group of different bird species feeding together in suitable habitat and patiently start scanning the foliage. I have found over the years that this small bird will come quite close to the ground to forage and close encounters can occur where the birds are unafraid.

One such memorable moment, I was sitting at a water hole out west and I had a bird come in so close for a look I could not focus on him to take a picture! The range of the Spotted Pardalote includes all the states and territories of Australia except the Northern Territory. This range is usually along coastal areas and extends slightly inland. Race xanthopygus can be seen in the southern states and Western Australia. Spotted Pardalote inhabit a variety of habitats including eucalypt forest, inland scrubs, watercourses, urban parks and gardens. These birds nest in the later half of the year. If one sees a small bird flying out of a bank in the months of Spring, money could be put on it being a species of Pardalote. The birds usually dig a chamber into a bank where a globular nest is built. I found my first Spotted Pardalote’s nest in the bank of a walking track on Springbrook. Overall, the Spotted Pardalote is a common species throughout their range. I thoroughly recommend that if you are keen on birdwatching to be on the lookout for this charming and exquisitely marked little bird. Because, if you have never seen one up close, the first time will blow you away!

Disabled Bowls for the Mountain

Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club is now in a better position to extend its program for disabled bowlers, having procured a wheelchair ramp to make access to its greens easier. Although one of the smallest bowls clubs, Tamborine Mountain has always been keen to welcome bowlers at all levels and does not want anyone to be excluded. Club President, Lance Cordingley, would like to thank the Tamborine Mountain Croquet Club and the Mens’ Shed Association. The Croquet Club allowed the Bowls Club to buy the ramp from them for below replacement cost, and the Mens’ Shed put their skills to widening the ramp, making it safer and more suitable for a range of wheelchairs. Previously, bowlers from Roslyn Lodge and elsewhere attended the Bowls Club, but found it difficult to access the greens safely. “Without the assistance of the Croquet Club the Mens’ Shed Association, our ability to offer wheelchair bowlers an opportunity was very limited, whether they wanted to play or just have a roll up,” said Lance. “It is extremely pleasing to now have that ability and we cannot thank the Croquet Club and Mens’ Shed Association enough for making it possible. We extend an invitation to all disabled bowlers to contact us in relation to making use of our facilities and now particularly invite any wheelchair users who are interested to do so.” For more information about the Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club phone 5545 1308.

Canungra Bowls Club Canungra Bowls Club President’s Day 2012 A combined President’s Day was held on 20th May for Men’s President Peter Hickson and Ladies President Ray Hickson. Special guests were Gold Coast Tweed District Men’s President George Thompson and Director Mal Johnson, Gold Coast Tweed Ladies’ President Dawn Forrest and Secretary Joy Oswald. There was a full rink with teams from Benowa, Logan City, Mudgeeraba, McKenzie, Park, Sapphire Gardens, Paradise Point, Tamborine Mountain, Beenleigh, South Port, Helensvale and Canungra. Everyone had an enjoyable day.

Canungra Campdraft - Back in Action

By Des Cuffe After a long hiatus due to weather conditions and a shortage of cattle, the Canungra Show Society held their first campdraft in five years on the weekend of 5th and 6th May. The Saturday on the weekend before the draft was recorded as the wettest April day in seventeen years, but the Committee decided to keep going. Competitors had a late start on Saturday 5th May but were rewarded with two glorious days over the weekend. There were 382 first round runs - Ray White Rural, Beaudesert Maiden Draft: 112 horses; Cyril Mahony Memorial Novice Feature Draft: 126; Beechmont Cattle Co Open Draft: 132; Junior Draft: 8 and Juvenile Draft: 4. Organisers agreed it was the perfect size for the first draft back. Winners were – Maiden: Barry Stanford, Uki riding Quickdraw; Novice: Steve Jarrett, Bangalow riding Havana; Open: Brett Welsh, Beaudesert riding Warrenbri Hope; Juvenile: Jess Sammon on Spinnin Silver and Junior: Jake Curr on Majestic. A great meal on Saturday night was provided by the Scouts and Pony Club. The competitors were really happy with the ground and draft and told everyone to expect to get more nominations next year.

By David Baker, Canungra Owl’s Soccer The Under 10’s took part in the Nerang Invitational Carnival on Sunday 20th May. They all played their hearts out, especially in their final group match against hot favourites Pacific Pines who where unbeaten and had not conceded a goal till that point. Canungra won their first game against Nerang, lost to Coomera and Robina and suffered a narrow loss to Palm Beach, which led to the final group game against the hotpots Pacific Pines. Canungra were brave and scrambled to 1-all at half time before the superior skill of the opposition told in the second half and Canungra’s competition was over. Well done to Brian, Jess and Danelle for organising a day out for the Under 10’s. The Canungra Men’s team play Wednesday nights at 7pm on 12th and 27th June. Please come along and support the team and enjoy a hot meal and cold drink.

Canungra Pony Club News with Katrina Morrow This year things have got off to a slow start. Wet, wet and too wet is all we could write about, but as we are all aware the weather is behaving for us now. Fingers crossed that it stays this way for some time so the riders can get a chance to show off their skill at district events. Our first event, uninterrupted by the weather, was the Zone Two Championship Gymkhana. It was a great day for spectators and an even more pleasing day for competitors. Congratulations to Justin Morrow-Cleary and Krystal Behrendorff who both had a successful day. Justin came home with nine ribbons and Krystal with two. This year the club is lucky to have Lisa Koppman as an instructor for its rally days. Lisa is an EFA level two instructor and an EA NCAS level one instructor. Lisa runs her own facilities out of Tamborine and competes regularly at eventing, showjumping and dressage. An instructor of this calibre is something not all clubs are accessible too. Our new corporate sponsor for the club’s rally days is Sarabah Estate Vineyard. We thank them for their generosity towards the club and its members.
