No Date for Goat Track Tackling Graffiti and Vandalism

The “Goat Track” (Tamborine Mountain Road) is likely to remain closed for several months following severe damage from storms and flooding associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald on the Australia Day weekend.

Landslides due to heavy rain caused part of the road to collapse, leaving it unsafe and impassable for motorists.

Cr Virginia West said the road will be reopened as it is an important route, not only for residents but also for emergency services vehicles between Canungra and Tamborine Mountain.

Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause said he has inspected the road and had discussions with senior Main Roads staff as to the likely repairs needed.

“I understand the frustration that detours can cause the travelling public, but Main Roads is working hard to re-open the road to Mount Tamborine as soon as it is safe to do so” Mr Krause said.

“In the meantime residents living on the Goat Track prior to the slip site have access to their properties.”

Motorists travelling from Canungra are advised to access Tamborine Mountain via Henri Robert Drive or Tamborine Oxenford Road.

By Chloe Pickard A parent-child sub-committee has been proposed to deal with rising graffiti and antisocial behavioural problems at Moriarty Park.

The decision comes after the Moriarty Park Community Sporting Association committee held a meeting to discuss the escalating vandalism to the skatepark, playground and Moriarty Park hall itself.

President Steve Moriarty said he has faced abuse from users while attempting to look after the park and that the committee is willing to support a skate park user group to take responsibility for looking after the park, raise funds and oversee its use.

“If we get the kids engaged and taking ownership, they’ll have a better sense of community,” he said.

The vandalism has prevented expansions of the skate park, as the Moriarty Park committee are unwilling to spend more money if the facility is further abused after expansions.

Rachel Hansen, whose children use the park regularly, said she was happier knowing there would be more community involvement and was interested in being on the sub-committee.

“The community needs to work together with the kids. My son’s onboard and he’s got a couple of friends involved,” she said.

The next meeting will be held on 16th March 10.30am at Moriarty Park.

Any parents and children interested in the park’s future and wanting to join the sub-committee are encouraged to attend.

Facelift

for

Canungra Uniting Church has had new life breathed into it by prisoners from the Palen Creek Correctional Centre.

Canungra Uniting Church Maintenance Coordinator, Sue McKeay, said a group of prisoners, supervised by an officer from the Centre, painted the Church and hall under a community service program.

“They started just before Christmas,” said Sue, “But they had some setbacks because of the weather - extreme heat and later rain and flooding.

“The project was finished mid-February and we couldn’t be happier with the result. The quality of the work is outstanding.”

Palen Creek’s Deputy General Manager, Chris Burgess, said up to five prisoners worked on this project as part of the Centre’s commitment to providing community service within the Scenic Rim Regional Council.

This allows prisoners the opportunity to provide reparation back to the community for their offences.

“This program is open to prisoners who are close to release,” Chris said, “It also assists with their rehabilitation and reintegration back into the community while providing the Parole Board with an additional assessment of their suitability for release.

“Any not for profit organisation can apply through the Community Advisory Committee for assistance with projects. The organisations

supply the materials and the prisoners supply the skills and labour. Often we have prisoners who have the appropriate skills to support the projects but we can also link into our TAFE programs for projects requiring specific skills.”

Chris added that the prisoners have adequate supervision at all times and that sex offenders

are not able to undertake these projects in the community.

“Community safety is our first priority,” he said.

Sue said the Uniting Church at Barney View will be painted under the same program.

Canungra School Awarded Environment Grant

Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause was pleased to visit Canungra State School on Tuesday 19th February to congratulate the school P&C, staff and students on receiving funding under the State Governments Everyone’s Environment Grants program.

“Students from Canungra State School’s “Green Team” are joining with community volunteers to carry out restoration work on Canungra Creek with the funds from the grants,” Mr Krause said.

“The School P&C received $9,610 in the first phase of grants in December 2012 to help manage weed species and increase biodiversity of the creek ecosystem.

“The P&C is also planning to hold a number of working bees through the year to engage with students and the wider community to improve our local environment.

“This is a great initiative that encourages school students to appreciate and look after their local environment and the government is proud to support their efforts. I commend the School for taking this action.”

Canungra State School Principal, Colleen Murphy, said the grant will enable the school to pay a company to carry out weed clearing and planting in areas which are not safe for students and volunteers.

“This grant enables us to focus our time and energy on weed clearing and planting in areas where the children can be involved,” she said.

The Everyone’s Environment grants will provide $12 million in funding to practical environmental projects over the next three years. $1.3 million was initially allocated under the first phase of the grants program, with a further 29 projects announced in January totaling $1.6 million.”

Applications for round two of the grants will be called in the middle of this year.

Disaster Income Recovery Scheme Approved The Federal Government has declared the Scenic Rim Regional Council area eligible for the Disaster Income Recovery Scheme. The Scheme is designed to subsidise income lost during the floods and storms.

The scheme covers both employees and small business owners. This is a Federal Government Scheme and applications should be made to a Centrelink Office or by phoning Centrelink on 180 22 66.

This is a separate payment to those made under the Disaster Recovery Payment Scheme, and the Scenic Rim Regional Council area has not been declared by the Federal Government to be eligible for that scheme.

Boutique Brewery for Tamborine Council has approved the establishment of a boutique brewery at Tamborine.

The Beard and Brau Brewery will produce handcrafted, micro-brewed beers as a home-based business on a 1.7ha property.

The brewery will produce up to 20,000 litres of beer per year in 800-litre batches, .

“The Scenic Rim is already home to number of boutique breweries, distilleries and wineries, many of them award-winning enterprises,” Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Jennifer Sanders said.

Cr Sanders said the home-based business was essentially a manufacturing operation, so it would not be open to customers or the general public.

Recovery Funding For Sports Clubs

Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause is encouraging local sporting and recreational clubs affected by the recent extreme weather event to apply for the Government’s $1 million recovery fund, and start getting back on their feet.

Mr Krause said clubs were eligible for grants up to $25,000 under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program, to replace much needed equipment and repair clubhouses and grounds.

One-off funding grants will be available to eligible flood-affected clubs and organisations in local government areas across Queensland.

Applications will remain open until Friday 10 May 2013.

Storytime for Under 5’s

Storytime at Canungra Library has started on Wednesdays at 3.30pm.

Scenic Rim Librarian Raylene Jensen said the first session was a rousing success, despite coinciding with a community services disaster response day.

Everyone is welcome to bring their toddlers along to join in the fun. There are books and stories, with singing and dancing, followed by craft.

Any age between 0-5 can join in Storytime, giving older siblings and parents time to browse the bookshelves.

Chamber Investigates Banking Facility

Canungra Chamber of Commerce is investigating the feasibility of a community bank for the town.

The community banking model which has been successfully operated by Bendigo Bank around Australia, is one option of several options which the Chamber is investigating.

The Community Bank is a locally owned and operated company which functions as a franchise of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank.

The Chamber will hold an open meeting on Wednesday 3rd April with guest speakers Wilson Neuendorf (Chairman, Kalbar Community and District Branch, Bendigo Bank) and John Blackburn (retired member, Board of Directors, Fernvale Bendigo Bank). A spokesman from Bendigo Bank will also be present to answer questions.

Chamber President, Shane Stevenson said the reopening of a banking facility in Canungra would be of benefit to both the business and residential community at large.

“I would encourage any business owners, residents or intertested parties to come along and attend the meeting to assist in gauging interesd in this possible venture being undertaken.,” said Shane.

The meeting will be held at the Canungra RSL Services Club on Wednesday 3rd April from 6pm. All interested members of the public are invited to attend.

Gift hampers were distributed to Canungra families

Op Shop Blessings Distributed

Canungra Op Shop has distributed $3,000 of its profits to four families in Canungra who had been affected by lifethreatening illness.

Each family recieved a $500 “care package” of their choice including vouchers from Food works, Coles, Woolworths, dental bills, electricity bills and help with school books.

The dentist joined in the spirit of giving and did a “two for the price of one” deal for one of the recipients and the High

School on Tamborine matched the book contribution with uniforms.

Treasurer of Canungra Op Shop Michelle Aldridge said, “It has encouraged us in our work with the shop as it is a struggle to keep in running because we have so few volunteers.”

Also helping the community have been the Op Shop’s free health and nutrition DVDs. They have proved so popular that the shop has purchsed a bulk load of blank DVDs to use for future health subjects.

Orchid and Foliage Show

The Beaudesert District Orchid and Foliage Society’s Autumn Show for orchid and foliage plant will be held on the weekend of 9th and 10th March in the Canungra School of Arts Hall in Pine Orchids on display at the Street, Canungra.

Autumn Show Orchids ferns, begonias, and bromeliads will be on display.

Several local growers will be selling orchids and giving advice while trade tables will be selling orchid and plant growing accessories and plant products. There will be also a cake stall run by a local organisation.

Well-known orchid and foliage plant enthusiast, John Roberts, will be speaking on “Orchids for Beginners” at 9am and 11am on the Saturday and from 10.30pm on the Sunday.

The show runs from 8am to 3pm on the Saturday and from 9am to 3pm on the Sunday. Admission is $3.

Prime Minister Julia Gillan has announced Saturday 14th September 2013 as polling day for the 2013 federal election.

The Prime Minister has further announced that later this year, the Prime Minister will advise the Governor-General to dissolve the House of Representatives with writs to be issued on Monday 12th August for an election for the House and half of the Senate, to be held on Saturday 14th September.



On the basis of the writ being issued by the Governor-General, as indicated by the Prime Minister, on 12th August, and the election date being 14th September, the 2013 election timetable will be: • Close of rolls: 8pm, Monday, 19th August.

Meet the Blues

Residents have the opportunity to meet NSW footballers Brad Fittler, Nathan Hindmarsh and Ian Schubert as they stop in Canungra for Charity Bike Ride HOGs for Homeless on Tuesday 5th March.

The riders start at Kiama in NSW on 1st March, and travel through Tamworth, Canungra and Tweed Heads before finishing the ride in Sydney. They will stop for lunch at the Canungra Hotel for a meet and greet from 12 noon until 1.30pm.

They are also raffling off a Harley Davidson 883, which is travelling with them and will have other riders and Holden support vehicles at the Hotel.

HOGs for Homeless raises money for Sydney Charity ‘Youth Off the Streets’, a non-denominational community organisation working for young people who are homeless, drug dependent and recovering from abuse.

Since opening in 1991, Youth Off The Streets has grown from a single food van delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency offering a full continuum of care through delivery of a wide range of services.

Fr Allan Paulsen Moves On

By Diane Ayscough President of the St Luke’s Anglican Guild Canungra At the end of 2012 we farewelled our priest of seven years, Allan Paulsen and his wife Michele to take up the position of Rector in the parish of Hervey Bay. Since moving to Hervey Bay Father Allan has become the Archdeacon of the Hervey Bay district.

We have been blessed to have Revd Jim Stonier as Locum until a new priest is appointed. Revd Jim is a wonderful asset to St Luke’s and everyone is welcome to come to our weekly Sunday Service, held at 7.45am.

There is always morning tea and a chat afterwards.

We have a Bible study class commencing on the first Tuesday of March at the Church. We welcome everyone to join us.

Canungra Scout Group at Jamboree

By Leigh Bartlett Canungra Scout Group started 2013 with a bang with six youth members attending the Australian Jamboree in Maryborough from New Years day to 13th January.

Many new friendships were made which will last a lifetime.

The night time entertainment ranged from Reece Mastin to Jess Mauboy, magician Constantino to comedian Josh Thomas. A special thanks to everyone who supported their fundraising efforts.

Canungra Scouts were lucky enough to be able to assist 40 Tasmanian scouts and their leaders who were staying with us to enjoy the Gold Coast for a few days after Jamboree before heading home.

This year Canungra’s Venturer Scouts will attend Queensland Venture in Far North Queensland where they will

participate in bungee jumping, white water rafting and a range of other extreme activities.

Canungra’s Cubs and Scouts will be attending water activities, abseiling and a number of camps throughout the year as well as our regular parade nights.

The youth numbers have grown significantly over the past couple of years and Canungra Scout Group is in desperate need of adults to come on board as leaders in the Scout and Venturer Sections.

From My Window...

It Takes a Village to Raise a Child Canungra, to me, means community. It is a place where I generally feel safe and where I feel my children are safe. We know a lot of people in town, we know most of the business people and we know a lot of the residents. People are about each other in this town. They care about the way the town looks, and they don’t take kindly to people destroying and defacing our parks and buildings.

Over the last few months, Moriarty Park has been defaced by vandals. The children’s playground, which was donated by the kindergarten when it closed, had shade sails torn by teenagers climbing up poles and destroying them. The fence, which was put up to keep young children safe when parents are watching older chidlren play sport, was ripped apart and had to be taken down. Some parents are too scared to take their young children to play there because of the language and threatening attitude of other users of the park.

As a community, what do we do? How do we show these kids that there is a better way to behave than being destructive?

Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers. Maybe there aren’t any.

For some people maybe there is a destructive streak which is innate, however for most I think the issue is that the people who are destroying the community’s property have no respect. No respect for other members of the community who want to use these facilities; no respect for the people who are running the organisations like Moriarty Park and the soccer club; and no respect for themselves.

Community - it means looking after each other, having pride in our surroundings, supporting each other. How do we teach kids to do that?

Can it be taught?

I’m not sure, but as the saying goes: It takes a village to raise a child.

Dear Editor, I wrote recently about the lack of interest from certain departmental staff in improving access to Lamington National Park (What constitutes a Rest Area?). I am very heartened by two recent facts which indicate a welcome change in attitude.

The first of these took place after the Australia Day weekend, when three park staff, headed by the acting Ranger-in-Charge, completed, in one very long and arduous day, the herculean task of clearing debris off the road which gives access to the Green Mountains section of the park from Canungra. This prevented much disappointment for visitors, and has impressed all those closely associated with the park. Such application to an obstacle thrown up by Nature is reminiscent of the work of the pioneers who opened up the park in the early twentieth century.

The second is the appeal by the afore-mentioned ranger for trained volunteers to assist in clearing the walking tracks blocked by so many falls of vegetation. Previous attitudes would have resulted in the tracks being closed for many more months. I am pleased to stand corrected on the opinion I expressed last month. I have never before been so delighted to be wrong. Hopefully this is the way of the future – no, not my being wrong, but having rangers in place who want others to know and value our park.

Council Comment

EX-TROPICAL CYCLONE OSWALD Well, didn’t the weather over the Australia Day weekend wreak havoc throughout the entire Scenic Rim area?.

Thankyou to all the local businesses who offered power points to those residents without power, to the Showgrounds committee for their offer of hot showers and to FoodWorks for their free water and discounted ice.

Thank you also to Energex and the SES who worked through difficult conditions to restore power and assist residents.

I guess an event such as this makes us all think what items we did not have in our homes which could have made life so much easier; two that spring to mind are a battery powered radio and one of the older style phones that plug only into the telephone socket and function when there is no power. Items one doesn’t think about until an event such as the one we have experienced.

COUNCIL CLEAN UP You will have noticed that in the immediate days following the wind and rain Council officers “made safe” the roads, bridges and parks, in that the debris has been moved safely off the public areas, and they will be returning in the coming weeks to remove it. All the road and bridge networks - and that’s a lot of kilometres - have been assessed by the Works team and repair work has commenced in a prioritised manner but will obviously take some time.

GOAT TRACK UPDATE The Goat Track is currently closed to all traffic due to an embankment failure along the one way portion of the road and Transport and Main Roads (TMR) are currently working with geotechnical experts to determine the full extent of the damage. Although unable at this stage to say when the road may be open again TMR have advised they will be undertaking the repairs as soon as possible but reconstruction could take many months. I can assure you that Council is aware of the importance of this link road and are advocating strongly on your behalf.

SOCIAL MEDIA With the storm event the use of the Council’s Disaster Management Facebook site proved invaluable as a way for residents (and councillors) to be kept up to date with the situation.

I understand it is not effective when one has no power or telephone service but even once restored it was one of the ways Council could communicate the State Government assistance updates and Recovery Centre progress as well as road closure updates and other important information.

I would encourage all residents with internet access to set up an account with either Facebook or Twitter, even if it is purely for use in disaster events. ‘Liking’ Council’s Disaster Management page or following on Twitter will ensure you are alerted to any important information in future disaster or emergency events. While these two pages can be viewed even if you do not have an account, you will need to check the page regularly as you will not be automatically alerted to any new information.

School Happenings - Canungra State School - February 2013 Students of the Week - Well done to these 29th January - The Start Of A New School Year Students and staff began the new school year on Tuesday 29th January, students for setting a fine example! although the rain and flooding kept many students at home - some without power. The school was up and running, ready to welcome the students thanks to the efforts of office staff, grounds staff, cleaners, uniform and tuck shop convenors, teachers and other staff, and the principal and deputy principal.

30th January - First School Parade A Welcome to Country was performed by Ken Markwell, a Senior Wangerriburra custodian, who welcomed all members of the school community to his people’s country in the language of the Wangerriburra people. Ken explained that Wangerriburra is one of eight clan groups of the Yugambeh Language Region which extends from the Tweed Valley to upper Logan River region and Beenleigh. He also told the assembly that ‘Wangerriburra’ means ‘home of the pretty faced wallaby.’

The school thanks Ken, his ancestors and the Wangerriburra people for welcoming them to this beautiful land.

HOGs had morning tea at school on 3rd February

3rd February - HOGs At The School On Sunday 3rd February the HOGS (Harley Owner’s Group) arrived at the school. This was a spectacular event with up to 180 Harley Davidson motorbikes driving into the school grounds, where the P&C provided them with sandwiches, cakes and biscuits for morning tea. This was the first P&C Fundraiser for the year.

6th February - Total Football Academy Demonstration Total Football Academy are running an after school soccer program during Term One at the school for Prep to Year 4. During the six week program, games will be played inside an inflatable soccer field, which captures the imagination of students, giving them a great soccer experience. Training will focus on different skills each week, such as dribbling, turning and shooting.

11th February - School Swimming Commences Students from Years One to Seven began their school swimming lessons at Moriarty Park swimming pool.

12th February - Masonic Lodge Bursaries Announced Michael Fraser, on behalf of the Tamborine Masonic Lodge, announced the 2013 recipients of the Masonic Lodge bursaries at Parade.

Congratulations to Amelia Ingram and Carlan Shepherd who were awarded these bursaries. These students will benefit from $150 each which will go towards the costs associated with their music studies.

These students were selected for their outstanding commitment to learning to play their instrument, for always being prepared and well practised and for being responsible, reliable and talented members of the School Band.

Canungra State School Green Team School Environment Management Plan

By Jodie Clifford, Green Team The Canungra State School Green Team recognise the importance in preserving and enhancing the natural environment, and strive to incorporate sustainable initiatives throughout the school community. The School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) was developed by the Green Team in 2010 to outline baseline data and set benchmarks for energy consumption and waste output.

The SEMP has provided a clear Environmental Strategy that incorporates the following Green Team projects: • Canungra Creek Restoration Project, • Wangerriburra Cultural Trail and Bushtucker Garden, • Canungra State School Food Garden and Cooking Club Projects, • Canungra State School Worm Farm.

The Canungra State School Green Team place a strong emphasis on cultivating environmental projects at the school. Working collaboratively with staff, students and parents, the Green Team continue to develop a solid skills and knowledge base.

Our world is developing and changing at a rapid pace and the kids of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Green Team projects are providing a solid platform for students to create long-lasting learning opportunities in the field of Environmental Sustainability.

The Green Team’s first activity for the year is Clean Up Australia Day. School’s Clean Up Day is on Friday 1st March and a community event will be held at the school on Saturday 2nd March from 8-10.30am.

Director: Richard LaGravenese Cast: Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons.

Set in the American South, Beautiful Creatures tells the story of Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a teenage boy who dreams of escaping the small-minded town he lives in. He falls in love with newcomer, Lena, who is ostracised and persecuted by the other students at their high school.

Although many people have said this film is similar to the Twilight series, it has a different feel to it. There is the ‘mortal falling in love with a supernatural being’ theme but Beautiful Creatures is lighter in atmosphere and mood than Twilight - which may be because Kristen Stewart isn’t in it, hanging about sulking and looking moody. In fact, it is more a combination of Twilight and the 1980s film Footloose (without the music).

Beautiful Creatures has its niche in the teen and pre-teen market and will certainly appeal to most people in that age group.

Queensland Weapons Amnesty

A three month weapons amnesty took effect across the state from 1st February 2013.

The Queensland Government announced a state-wide amnesty from prosecution for the surrender and registration of weapons and unregistered firearms during the amnesty period, which ends on 30th April 2013.

Deputy Commissioner (Specialist Operations) Ross Barnett said members of the public would be encouraged to hand back and surrender unregistered firearms and other weapons for destruction.

“Included in the announcement to reform Queensland weapons legislation was a reference to include a firearms hand back scheme and firearm registration amnesty,” Deputy Commissioner Barnett said.

“Appropriately licensed members of the public will be encouraged to register previously unregistered firearms through firearms dealers, armourers, firearms sporting clubs as well as police stations.

“The amnesty allows firearm owners who have an unregistered firearm, to register it under their current licence.

“Additionally, unlicensed owners can apply for a licence and anyone can surrender their unregistered firearm to be destroyed or sold to a firearms dealer.

“Police stations in regional areas will have access to a mobile destruction van when a regional destruction centre has been inundated with surrendered firearms.

“The three mobile destruction vans are fitted with a hydraulic press and a circular saw to efficiently destroy the firearms.

Unregistered firearms can be surrendered during the amnesty to local firearms dealers or police station without prosecution for its possession.

Personal details or reasons for the possession may not be required.

People who hold a current Weapons Act licence for the relevant category can apply to register a firearm at a shooting club, firearms dealer, armourer or local police station without prosecution for its possession.

By Suzanne Roberts Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers Deposits – Be Clear When They are Payable and How Much is Payable When signing a contract, an initial deposit is generally required at this stage or within 2 or 3 working days from signing the contract. It is quite often a small amount such as $1,000.00 or $2,000.00.

A balance deposit is generally due once your contract has become ‘unconditional’ e.g. once your finance application has been approved.

Be aware of when the deposit is due, and how much deposit is due to be paid. Deposits can be made by either: • Providing cash, personal cheque or bank cheque to the Stakeholder; • Depositing cash, personal cheque or bank cheque into the Stakeholder’s account by way of branch deposit; or • By Telegraphic Transfer (in branch bank transfer) or Electronic Funds Transfer (Internet Banking transfer).

In order to meet your obligations under the contract, the deposit monies must be in the Stakeholder’s Trust Account by 5.00 p.m. on the due date.

Do not under any circumstances ‘EFT/Internet Bank Transfer’ the deposit monies on the due date because those funds will not be in the Stakeholder’s account by 5.00 p.m. on the due date and you could be considered to be in default under the terms of the Contract, and possibly risk losing the contract AND your deposit!

Always contact your Solicitor before you intend to pay your deposit!

Nature’s Gems Fan-Tailed Cuckoo

By Melissa Whitby Birds throughout the world have adopted extraordinary techniques to reproduce their offspring. One of the most bizarre groups that do this is the Cuckoos.

For anyone who is not familiar with the work of the cuckoo family, these birds lay their eggs in the nest of other bird species. Frequently, once the egg of the cuckoo species is laid, the cuckoo will then remove an egg of the host bird. The eggs of cuckoo species are usually similar looking to that of the host bird. Or, once the cuckoo chick hatches it may push the eggs of the host bird from the nest.

Thirteen species of cuckoo can be identified in Australia. Nine of these have been recorded in South-East Queensland.

One of the most common cuckoo species that can be encountered in South-East Queensland is the Fan-tailed Cuckoo. This bird is usually heard before it is seen.

Therefore, it is an advantage to know the call as you may encounter the whereabouts of this bird species more quickly then systemically looking for it.

Fan-tailed Cuckoos have a yellow eye-ring, orangebrown chest, grey upperparts and unique patterning on the underside of the tail. A similar species to the Fan-tailed Cuckoo is the Brush Cuckoo. The Brush Cuckoo is paler in colour to the Fan-tailed Cuckoo and lacks the orangebrown chest.

Fan-tailed Cuckoos can be seen in a variety of habitats. These include scrub valleys, rainforest, gardens, orchards, roadsides and paddocks. The range of this bird is continuous along the east coast of Australia and extends into Tasmania and coastal South Australia and southern Western Australia.

As discussed above, all cuckoos have an interesting reproducing technique. Usually, host bird species of the Fan-tailed Cuckoo include thornbills, fairy-wrens and scrub-wrens. The months of breeding include June to January. Only one egg is laid in the nest of the host bird.

Fan-tailed Cuckoo chicks have demanding appetites and the small birds that are their host parents are usually run ragged in an effort to provide the chick with food.

Cuckoos are unusual birds and the bird in the photograph that accompanies this article had moved into my parents’ backyard for several weeks. In all my time of birding, I had never seen a Fan-tailed Cuckoo so relaxed in the vicinity of humans. These birds are migratory and can move on as quickly as they arrive. So, for anyone interested in viewing Aussie cuckoo species, I suggest listening for their intriguing breeding calls!

There are probably some nice new Cross Country jumps in people’s paddocks that weren’t there last year thanks to the recent winds. Our first official “horse riding” rally day will be Sunday 3rd March, starting at 8:30am for gear check.

We held our AGM on 3rd February.

Thank you to last year’s committee for their fine efforts. Lisa introduced the new jumping rule “if your horse knocks that pole off the jump, you have to get off and put it back on yourself”. I know of two riders who learnt very quickly how to ride their horses over a fence properly.

Fun-Raising Day ‘Great Success

The European motorcycle circuit is calling and Corey Turner and Gareth Jones will be there - with a bit of help from the community.

A fund raising day held on the weekend of 9th and 10th February at Flying Fox, Canungra raised money and awareness of what these two talented locals are doing overseas. “ The weekend was a complete success

and we had a lot of riders, families and spectators to support the event,” said Gareth.

“The comradery of the riders and supporters was unbelievable and both myself and Corey received a lot of support over the weekend.”

Gareth will ride with Factory Yamaha for the 2013 season and Corey will ride for the FOGI Racing team in Spain.

By Darrel Biss, President, Canungra AHI&S The Canungra AHI&S is in the process of upgrading the Showground’s facilities. Our current project is to upgrade the existing main ring fence to a uniform four rail metal fence.

According to local identity Mick Corcoran, there has only been one fence rebuild since the original, which the late Lloyd Day helped his father build when Lloyd was a young boy. A group of locals erected the original fence in order to see the first Show with a schmikko new ring.

Mick estimates that 25 years ago the show society committee, along with a number of locals, undertook rebuilding the current ring at a working bee over a week end. The work was not finished at the working bee, so Mick and his boys completed it.

The opportunity now exists for you to make a contribution to the future of our community’s showground. By making a contribution of $250 you and your family can be recognised with a plaque on your fence panel.

The Canungra AHI&S has not for profit status and can receive contributions and offer a tax benefit. This year is the 75th anniversary of the show and 55th anniversary of the Rodeo and Campdraft. This is a perfect time to etch your name into the future of Canungra and investment in memories children will cherish. Sport Canungra Bowls Club

By Ray Hickson The Canungra Bowls Club has reopened after six weeks of renovations to the green and fencing Business and Community Competition On 7th February, the Business and Community Thursday Night Competition commenced with The Family winning the Highest Rink Margin + 15. The Club is seeking a team of four or four individual players to form a team to bring the total number of teams to 10. For enquiries contact Peter 5543 4456.

Saturday 16th February saw the Canungra Men’s Summer Nines Team win their third game. With wins over Sapphire Gardens, Tweed Heads and Mudgeeraba see them leading the Competition with a total of 229 against 146.

Cribbage Monday night Cribbage at the Canungra Bowls Club has commenced, with numbers increasing weekly the event will remain on the calendar in the town. New players are welcome on any Monday night at 7pm for a 7-30pm start.

CANUNGRA RSL SUB-BRANCH NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 2013 Annual General Meeting of the sub-branch will be held on Monday March 11th at the Canungra Services Club, commencing 7.30pm.

All committee positions will become vacant.

The Canungra RSL Fishing Club held their first fishing competition for 2013 on Sunday 20th of January.

Results were: • 1st: Lyndon Dyer with 24 carp and 113.1 points.

• 2nd: Jon Mahony with 16 carp and 82.1 points.

• 3rd: John Dougherty with 10 carp and 51.8 points.

The winner of the junior competition was James Dougherty with five carp and 24.9 points Results from the fishing competition held on 3rd of February were: • 1st: Lyndon Dyer with one carp, two bass (released) and six points.

Written nominations for these positions will be accepted, signed by nominee, proposer and seconder, until 5.00pm Friday March 8th.

The results from the fishing competition held on the 17th of February were: • 1st: John Dougherty with 1 carp, 2 bass(released) and 15.6 points The next fishing day is Sunday 10th March.

The Fishing Club meets monthly or fortnightly, depending on the moons. In summer, they fish in the local creeks and dams and focus on eliminating carp from our waterways - other fish are released.
