Taking Another Step Towards Canungra’s Community Bank

Canungra’s Community Bank is getting closer with $261,550 in shares pledged so far and Canungra’s first Bendigo Bank ATM now located at the Outpost Cafe. The ATM will allow Bendigo Bank customers to access fee free withdrawals. Canungra Community Bank Project Committee Chair, Janine Rockliff said the ATM is a small step towards a full service bank for the town. “We are over one-third of the way towards our required pledge total now,” she said, “The ATM shows Bendigo’s commitment to the town and to the Bank Project. I encourage people to return their pledge forms as quickly as possible. The sooner we open the branch, the sooner the Bank can start to return money to the community.” Canungra has been without a full service bank for over 20 years. In 2013, the Canungra Chamber of Commerce investigated the possibility of a bank returning to the town and came across Bendigo Bank’s Community Bank model. Janine said the benefits for Canungra and the surrounding districts are enormous. “In similar sized towns who have opened Community Banks such as Kalbar, the return to community organisations have been in excess of $40,000 in the first four years. Imagine what our sporting and community organisations could do with that sort of money. Even spread amongst the many organisations we have, it would achieve so much.”

Bendigo Bank Senior Community Strengthening Manager, Peter Dirkx with Community Bank Committee members Monique Morcus and Andrew Covino. Andrew is also the owner of The Outpost Cafe.

“Initially this was a project we undertook because businesses are inconvenienced by not having a bank in town,” she said, “Once we found out the benefits we realised this is also a great way to assist our community organisations.” To raise funds to open the Branch, shares are available for people with a

Brie and Josh are Shaving for a Cure

Most girls her age would be horrified at the prospect of losing their hair, but Brie Perryman can’t wait. Brie will take part in Shave for a Cure on Saturday 15th March at the Canungra State School hall along with the Scenic Rim’s Young Citizen of the Year, Josh Bell-McNee. Brie said Josh’s battle with cancer is one of the reasons she decided to become involved with Shave for a Cure. “I’ve wanted to do it for several years now,” she said, “I have lost some family members to cancer and have been good friends with Josh through primary school and high school.” “I thought now is a good time to do it - I’ve finished school and I want to do something that will make a difference.” The World’s Greatest

Shave is the Leukemia Foundation’s major fundraising event and provides about half the funds the Foundation needs each year to continue its work. The Foundation receives no ongoing government funding, so supporting this event makes its Vision to Cure and Mission to Care possible. The money raised from the Shave for a Cure will go towards research, which is needed to find better treatments and cures for leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. The Canungra Shave for a Cure morning will run from 10am - 12 noon with a coffee and cake stall and children’s activities available on the day. Profits from all activities will go to the Leukemia Foundation. Brie’s stepfather, local author Liam Taylor, will shave

Entries Open for 2014 Healthy Waterways Awards

Individuals, groups, schools and organisations who are helping to protect and improve South East Queensland’s waterways are encouraged to enter the 14th Annual Healthy Waterways Awards to be recognised and rewarded for their efforts. The Healthy Waterways Awards provide an opportunity to raise awareness of waterway health issues, recognise those making a difference, celebrate achievements and inspire others to take action. Each entrant has the chance to win a share of $17,000 in cash and prizes. Healthy Waterways’ Chief Executive Officer, Ms Julie McLellan, said the Awards provide recognition and highlight the benefits of collaboration between community, industry and government when taking action on waterway issues. “The waterways underpin our lifestyle and are estimated to provide over $5 billion per year to South East Queensland’s economy. Our fast growing population is increasing the demand for water supply, infrastructure, recreation and tourism which places greater pressures on our waterways,” Ms McLellan said. “Now more than ever, encouraging and rewarding those who are actively working to protect our waterways is vital. If you know of someone who has been making a positive contribution to the health of our waterways, nominate them via a simple online form at healthywaterwaysawards.org,” she said. There are 13 award categories open to individuals, schools, community groups and organisations: • Sustainable Water Management Award • Waterways Champion Award • Government Award • Volunteer of the Year Award • Water Services Award • Waterways Mentor Award • Community Award • Water Warrior Award • Indigenous Award • Sustainable Education Award • Clean Up Award • Urban Renewal Award • Rural and Agriculture Award Entries close Monday 14th April 2014. Each category winner will receive $500 cash and group and organisation winners will have the chance to win the Minister’s Grand Prize worth $10,000. All finalists will be eligible to win the People’s Choice Award (and a $500 retail gift card), which opens for voting on 12th May 2014. Winners will be announced at the Healthy Waterways Awards Gala Dinner on 20th June 2014. Enter the Awards or nominate a person/project via www. healthywaterwaysawards.org by Monday 14th April 2014. Healthy Waterways is a not-for-profit organisation working to protect and improve South East Queensland’s waterways.

In Brief:

Driveway Scam

Beware of a company coming to your property offering cheap driveway resurfacing. John and Robyn Fortescue of Wallaby Ridge Retreat were approached by a group of men saying they had product left over from a nearby job and quoted about $1,500 to repair and resurface their driveway. The men started spraying the driveway and preparing it for resurfacing. They had no business card or paperwork to identify their company When John questioned where their gravel truck was, the men packed up their equipment and left. John said he suspected the men were part of a scam where they do an incomplete job on the driveway and extract payment from people who don’t know what work should be done. What is Your Child Doing on Their Computer or iPod?

With technology changing at an increasingly fast pace, it is not unusual for children to know more about computers, smart phones and tablets than their parents. While we like to think our children are safe when they are using these devices, the information they can access and the information they can give out is often not what a parent would prefer. Father of three and IT specialist, Michael Wood, said after having some issues with his children regarding their use of technology he installed some controls on the electronic devices their children use. “We have several controls set up on their computers,” said Michael. “Some of it monitors their usage and some of it controls the sites they can look at on the internet. There really is no limit to what a child of any age can access if you don’t

Without parental controls installed on computers, children have unlimited access to information - of all kinds

set up these controls.” Michael and his wife, Tam are fortunate. With his background in IT Michael was able to set up the controls they needed. “If it had been Tam on her own, she wouldn’t have known where to start, except not to allow the kids to use

the computer, which these days is not practical. As well as playing games and social networking, they use the internet for school,” he said. Michael is holding an information evening for parents on Wednesday 19th March from 6pm at My Country Escape.

The evening will cover setting up a safe technology environment for children. “I will discuss my experiences and challenges with our 13 year old, 11 year old and 8 year old,” said Michael. Michael will focus on making devices child friendly with free tools that are readily available. The evening is aimed at parents with children up to Year 8 but will also be relevant for early teens. The evening is strictly secret parents business, children are not able to attend. The cost of the evening is $10 per person. Bookings are essential as numbers are strictly limited. For bookings contact Michael on 0438 525 592 or email: michael@ littletechco.com.au. Michael will hold more information evenings if there is enough interest, so if you are unable to attend that night, contact him to register your interest for another time.

Warning Signs of Elder Neglect and Abuse - Caring for Your Family

As people age and become more physically frail, they are less able to stand up to bullying and or fight back if attacked. They may not see or hear as well or think as clearly as they used to, leaving openings for unscrupulous people to take advantage of them. Many seniors around the world are being harmed in some substantial way often by people who are directly responsible for their care. Warning signs of neglect are often overlooked or thought to be a common part of growing old. Undue pain, abandonment and premature death should not be part of the nursing home experience. Just because your family member is in a care facility, doesn’t mean you can take your eyes off the road. The warning signs below could save the life of your parent or prevent serious pain and harm. All six are equally serious and warrant further investigation:

Weight Loss

Medication and advanced age’s deadening of senses can affect appetite. Negligent nursing homes often do not have the staff or the caring spirit to ensure residents receive necessary nutrition and hydration. Without proper nutrition, the body begins to eat itself in a serious medical condition called “cachexia.” Additionally, susceptibility to disease increases with malnutrition as does your loved one’s suffering.

Bruises

Families of nursing home residents should demand answers when they see bruises on a loved one’s body. Bruises

(actually pools of blood from broken capillaries) heal slowly in people with poor circulation. Bruising can occur when a nursing home resident is not handled correctly, for example lifting machines, transfers, etc, or when the resident is allowed to fall. RSL Joins Ride for Alyssa

On Saturday 1st March the Coomera Cruisers Club held a charity ride for Alyssa Hodkinson, an eight year old Gold Coast girl who is battling a rare form of cancer. Riders started at Coomera and rode through Canungra, stopping at the RSL for morning tea and continuing on to Advancetown. Alyssa was diagnosed with cancer in September 2013 and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Her parents, Leif and Nikki have had to give up their full time employment to care for Alyssa. Over $11,000 was raised on the day which will help to pay for Alyssa’s medical expenses, treatment and equipment needed at home.

Scenic Rim Transport To Be Scaled Back

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Don’t give up... During this month, many people were shocked by the death of celebrity Charlotte Dawson. What makes an attractive, successful woman take her own life? Well, let’s hope we never find out, really. Because if you understand where she was at that time, you are probably there yourself. In our society, we have so many ways of communicating with others - social media, phones, email - that it seems impossible to think that someone could feel so isolated that they are unable to ask for help. And yet that’s what happens. We are connected, yet disconnected. We reach into each other’s lives through Facebook or whatever social media we use, but do we really know each other? Have you had times when you have felt isolated and in need of help - but unsure of who to ask? Afraid of rejection, of people judging you, of being somehow inadequate? Depression and any type of mental illness is isolating. The stigma alone is debilitating. But even in the darkest hours, where there is life, there is hope. There is always hope. Don’t give up. Talk. Cry. Find help. But please, don’t give up. “Sometimes even to live is an act of courage.” - Seneca

The Scenic Rim Transport initiative is to be scaled back following a two-year trial of a range of projects to address the long-term issue of transport connectivity in Scenic Rim. Auspiced by the Scenic Rim Social Plan Steering Committee, the initiative was a response to the 10-year Scenic Rim Social Plan which identified a lack of transport options, particularly for those without regular access to personal transport, as a key issue of concern. Steering Committee Chair John Bartlett OAM said while monthly and school-holiday bus services, operated on a free or subsidised basis, were perhaps the most visible of the initiative, less visible yet equally important were the community partnerships established to provide a telephone and online advisory service to residents seeking information. “There is little doubt that public transport within the Scenic Rim remains an issue of vital importance to the community,” Mr Bartlett said. “The committee had hoped that even a once-a-month and schoolholiday bus service might form part of a broader solution to this problem, but patronage levels over the past two years have not reflected this. “While it is no longer viable to

continue these services due to poor patronage, this does not reduce the need for continuing advocacy for improved access to public transport over the long term.” Mr Bartlett said while the monthly bus services were to be discontinued, the Scenic Rim Transport telephone service and website would remain in place. “The network of transport coordinators who provide a telephone advisory service to residents and the www.scenicrimtransport.com website have been well supported, particularly by seniors in our community,” he said. “We appreciate the ongoing support of Centacare, Fassifern Community Centre and Tamborine Mountain Community Care in delivering this important service.” Mr Bartlett said funding would be redirected to supporting other aspects of the social plan implementation including family oriented and wellbeing programs, such as the 2014 Be Healthy & Active project. The transport telephone advisory service number is 5541 4176. Logan Coaches will continue to run buses from D J Smith Park (departing 9am) to Logan Hyperdome and Beenleigh from Monday to Friday.

Fun Day

Dear Editor, I would like to thank the Canungra Owls for staging their Fun Day at Moriarty Park on 22nd February. It was heartwarming to see over 100 local children and their parents enjoying the Be Healthy and Active program sponsored by Scenic Rim Regional Council. The Brisbane Roar inflatable football field was a big hit with the children and a great warm up for the season ahead I’m sure. The young men from Brisbane Roar did a fine job organising the large numbers of children who all displayed great patience and a sense of fair play while enjoying the footy games. What was also great to see were the efforts of Jason Spurgin whose initiative brought Pink Stumps Day to Canungra. Many children enjoyed the cricket drills conducted by Steve and Adele Spurgin in between games of footy in the blow up field. Congratulatons to Jason for raising funds for breast cancer research and support completely off his own bat (pun intended). Wouldn’t it be great to have a cricket

club at Canungra for these children to join in the summer months to keep active. Food for thought. So thanks go to Bren Dalby and her fantastic Canungra Owls volunteers, Zoya Shabanay from Be Healthy and Active and the Spurgin family for putting on a great morning of activities for our children. Possibility Thinking

Working as a personal trainer and coach I am always observing how thinking affects results. Statements such as “I don’t have time, I can’t do that, I don’t know how, it’s too hard”, are things we catch ourselves saying sometimes. They are all pretty negative and what I call ‘closed door’ statements which imply that there is no alternative or solution. These statements (reasons and excuses!) all tell the unconscious mind that there is no alternative, prevent results being achieved, and keep us stuck in the problem. On the other end of the scale is positive thinking, but sometimes too much positivity can feel un-natural, as though you are bluffing yourself, and it can install a false sense of security, like passing the buck and handing the situation over to the universe, fate or whatever you believe will make something happen, rather than being proactive and taking the necessary actions. A more practical way forward is ‘possibility thinking’. Rather than a definitive negative or positive statement, you ask a question, opening the door to possibility, and inviting solutions to the problem to come to you. ‘How can I do that, when can I make time, how can I find out, who could help me, what do I need to do?’. The magic 4 - what, who, when and how. Keep asking the questions and your unconscious will be constantly searching for answers, and believing that there is a solution. Our bodies and circumstances are just an extension of our minds. If you are not achieving your fitness or lifestyle ideals, maybe you need to ask a better question?

Director: Henry Alex Rubin. Stars: Jason Bateman, Jonah Bobo, Haley Ramm. Rated: MA15+. Run Time: 115 minutes.

Disconnect examines how electronic media has affected the way we relate to each other through three stories. Ben Boyd is a loner at school, he has few friends and immerses himself in his world of music. He becomes the victim of cyber bullying by two boys from school, Jason and Frye who impersonate a girl on Facebook. Nina is a journalist looking for a big story to take her to the next level in her career. She convinces teen online stripper, Kyle to allow her to interview him, but Kyle thinks Nina’s interest is more than professional. Cindy and Derek are a couple who discover large sums of money are missing from their bank account. Their computers have been hacked and their identities stolen. When the police seem unable to help them, they take matters into their own hands.

One of the things I really enjoyed about Disconnect is it doesn’t have the usual Hollywood endings. I won’t say any more than that - you’ll have to watch for yourself to find out! Performances by all of the cast are oustanding, in particular Jonah Bobo who plays Ben Boyd. Disconnect deserves its ‘MA15+’ rating. There are graphic sexual scenes and some of the content will be disturbing for many viewers. It is a powerful film, both in its content and in the emotional punch it packs. It addresses issues that never even existed 10 or 20 years ago and certainly is food for thought. If you are looking for some light hearted entertainment - don’t watch this! But if you want a thought provoking film which provides commentary on the way electronic media can and has affected our lives, Disconnect is for you.

Snake in the Shower!

By Dennis M

This perhaps is the stuff of the famous Anthony Perkins psycho shower scene! Graeme Beaumont, who at the time had a leg brace on due to a broken leg, was seated in the shower shampooing his hair when he felt something slide across his foot. On looking down he saw what you can see in the photo below. The household was alerted by screams from the imobile victim. After removing Graeme from the shower and running more water down the drain, the snake appeared again twice - obviously wanting air. The use of long handled BBQ tongs to try to grab the snake was to no avail and it disappeared back down drain. The sullage tank concrete lid was not replaced properly recently, so possibly the intruder entered shower outflow drain via sullage tank.

Ingredients:

100g butter 6 cloves garlic, crushed 1 cup dry white wine 500g green peeled prawns, de-veined and tails intact • 1 cup thickened cream • 8 basil leaves, finely chopped.

Method:

In a frying pan, melt butter and add garlic, heating until just bubbling. Pour in dry white wine and bring to the boil. Add prawns in a single layer and cook for a minute on each side. Pour cream over and bring to the boil. Stir in basil. Remove prawns with a slotted spoon and continue simmering sauce until it is reduced by one third. Return prawns to the sauce and serve on a bed of rice garnished with fresh basil.

Note:

Be careful not to burn the garlic when you add it to the butter. It needs to be cooked just a little to release the flavours.

Comb-Crested Jacana (Irediparra Gallinacea) By Melissa Whitby Birdwatching in Australia can be extremely rewarding due to the sheer diversity of bird species that can be observed. Birds come in many shapes and sizes, but one of the most unusual would have to be the Comb-crested Jacana. This extraordinary bird has one trait which sets it apart from all other Australian bird species. - it can literally walk on water! The Comb-crested Jacana is also known as the Lotusbird. It can be easily identified by a red comb above the eye, long toes and fingernails and a black breast band. The feet of a Comb-Crested Jacana are what allow this bird to look like it is walking on water. This bird spends many hours walking on floating vegetation in pursuit of a meal. The Comb-Crested Jacana is best located in permanent wetlands that have extensive floating vegetation. Usually, the birds are extremely active walking on waterlily leaves.

Comb-Crested Jacana. Photo: Melissa Whitby

Page 20

The range of the Comb-crested Jacana extends from coastal New South Wales, through Queensland and the Northern Territory to near Broome in Western Australia. Nesting occurs at different times of the year dependent on whether birds are located in northern or eastern Australia. The nest is built on floating vegetation and four eggs can be laid. Comb-crested Jacanas are relatively common in areas that provide wetlands with extensive floating vegetation. This can be seen in the extensive wetland areas of northern Australia. One of the best places to see Comb-crested Jacanas closer to home is at Emerald Lakes on the Gold Coast. When observing these birds, patience is important and watching carefully for their movements on the waterlilies. There are several species of Jacana throughout the world. The Combcrested Jacana is Australia’s only established species and another species the Pheasant-tailed Jacana has been sighted as a vagrant in Western Australia. This unusual bird never ceases to amazes me with its strange feet and odd body shape. They are a reminder of how unique and special Australian birds are in the landscape of this great country.

Kanga the Bull Arab x Kelpie is a lovely girl who loves to be with her humans. She will be a lively and fun companion who will probably enjoy playing in the backyard with the kids. She would love some classes where she can learn new tricks and commands, and will be lots of fun at the dog park or beach. She gets on well with other dogs and will make a great second dog. She is only nine months old and is up for anything that involves fun! Spectre is such a cool guy. He was surrendered to the AWLQ as his owners were not able to look after him anymore. He isn’t sure of shelter life and would love to find a home as soon as possible. He loves human company and would love nothing more than to be welcomed into the family home. He would enjoy a daily walk to keep his mind and body happy. He walks well on a lead and has great manners with his humans. He knows how to sit, shake hands, drop and comes when called. With such a big heart he will make an excellent companion.

Changes to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) come into effect from 12 March 2014. The National Privacy Principles which have been in place since 2001 will be replaced by the Australian Privacy Principles. The Australian Information Commissioner will have enhanced powers, including audit of private sector businesses, and the imposition of civil penalty orders of up to $1.7million for serious or repeated breaches. The changes impact the way businesses collect, use, store and disclose personal information. Special rules apply to direct marketing, overseas disclosure, collection of unsolicited information, requests for access and correction, and complaints. To comply with these changes, it is important that you review your privacy policy (which must be publicly accessible and should be published on your website), the provision of ‘privacy notices’ or ‘collection statements’ to the individuals concerned, subcontracting arrangements that involve the use

or disclosure of personal information, and data security. The changes also introduce a new obligation to put systems and procedures into place that will ensure that your organisation complies with the new Australian Privacy Principles, and that it deals appropriately with privacy complaints and enquiries, including requests for access. Private sector organisations should also designate a Privacy Officer and set out in writing what the Privacy Officer’s obligations will be. Health service providers and businesses that buy or sell personal information without the consent of the relevant individuals must also comply, regardless of their turnover. Green Team Plans for 2014

By Jodie Clifford, greenteamcss@gmail.com

Working Bee – 8th March

Our first working bee will be held this Saturday 8th Mar from 8.3010.30am celebrating Clean Up Australia Day. Our focus will not be just on rubbish but also weed removal and site preparation for our creek restoration project and gardening club. We will also be hosting a fundraising BBQ event with proceeds supporting Green Team projects. Please come along and get involved on support us by purchasing a tasty treat from our food stall. Please meet at marquees on school front oval.

Green Team Leaders

‘Wear Pink to School’ day on 21st February raised money for the Jane McGrath Foundation.

The Green Team is a respected group within the Canungra State School community and as such has been recognised for its opportunity to have senior leadership positions allocated. This year we congratulate Aaron Williams, Greg Spurgin (Year 6), Lily Nicholson and Georgia Wilson (Year 7) as our Green Team leaders. The Green Team looks forward to some great ideas and projects from these students.

Gardening Club Info Sheets

Our vegie gardening guru, Gardening Club co-ordinator Linda Riggs has developed some information sheets to be used with students participating in our gardening club program. These are too good to keep to ourselves so please feel free to contact us for a copy as they will be helpful for those trying to grow healthy, fresh produce at home! We will also upload these onto our website within the next few weeks. (http://canungrass.eq.edu. au) Our gardening and cooking club projects are underway for the year and this year we have a garden bed for each house group. We will have fun incentives to encourage gardening club participants to have the most productive vegetable gardens AND they get to eat the food they grow in cooking club! Watch the newsletter for updates. Let’s hope for some rain this month and some productive plant growth! Enquiries please email greenteamcss@gmail.com

Fringe Benefits Tax and Tax Planning Sunday 2nd March - HOGS Morning Tea

The HOGS (Harley Owners Group) came to the School for morning tea. This was a spectacular event with over 100 Harley Davidson motorbikes drove into the School grounds and the P & C provided morning tea. This was the second HOGS visit this year. They came on 5th January and were extremely impressed with what the P & C provided for morning tea. Obviously they pay for the privilege and that puts funds into the P & C account. It was a very successful fundraiser for the P & C. The P & C is very appreciative for the assistance from parents and students on the day..

With the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) year end fast approaching on 31 March, the time has come to commence preparations for completing your organisation’s annual FBT return. The countdown to the end of the financial year has also started, and that means you should start to focus on your end of financial year tax position and any tax planning that is appropriate for you. For tax returns and other financial statements, please phone or drop into our office for a “Scope of Work” and free estimate.

Venus goes direct. She has been turned in on herself, having the effect of making you more introspective than usual. Now that she has gone direct, your love becomes more sunny, expressive and outwardly directed. There’s no sense in second-guessing your love. Put it out there.

With Uranus in your midst, as it will be for some time yet, life is bound to have a slightly unsettling undercurrent. Uranus, aside from being associated with electricity, is associated with freedom. His job is to open your cage. That cage is made of ingrained habits. Let them go.

For most of the month, Mercury is retrograde and effectively becalmed in the quietude of Pisces. This period puts you in a quandary. When you go to say what you think, you may well experience a lack of words, where there is usually dictionaries full. It will change. Take your time.

With the Sun in Aquarius, Leo’s are being forced to consider life from the very opposite perspective to the one they normally take. Aquarius is a collective sign, focussed on community. Leo is the sign of individualism. Be a little less individualistic. Your wholeness is needed.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Mercury is moving backwards and forwards into Pisces. Pisces is an awkward experience. It is the very opposite of the kind structure and order that you represent. It is vast, nebulous and formless - incomprehensibly mysterious. Life is leading you there slowly and gently.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Mars keeps steeling you, when you think you are going to cave in. Libra is known as the iron fist in the velvet glove with good reason. Somehow you usually charm your way into having everyone, including yourself, believe that you are less directed than you are. It’s out now.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

With the Sun in Aquarius, life gets temporarily unfathomable. Though you make brave noises about change, when change really does make an appearance, you are as surprised as anyone to see your overwhelming tendency to retreat underground. Don’t back away from opportunity.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Canungra Rainfall - February 2014 Area

When everyone is throwing around ideas like thunderbolts, you are bewildered. Being in your head is not a comfortable experience. It’s when life encourages the gentle flow of feelings in your heart, that it makes more sense. Bide your time. Wait without enacting habitual defences.

Recorded by Barry Day

Jupiter is retrograde. Your normal mode of endless expansion has gotten a little unpredictable. Mind you, the direction life has been taking you has been very unusual. Unfamiliar attachments and strange sentimentalities are surfacing. This confusion is a preparation for fresh clarity

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Venus is with you as you go to ground. This bodes well for love and intimacy. She shifts from retrograde to direct too, suggesting that love is less likely to be a mere fantasy. To get reality into gear, you will have to of course express your love, rather than your love of independence.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

The Sun is in Aquarius fuelling your fire. With Uranus in Aries, life is making you a high-octane mix of ideas, ideals, passions and heart-felt vision. Your fuse is likely to be short. Don’t let that undermine your cause. Direct your fire. Dance it off if you‘ve got too much. Keep it light.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Rainbow looking out from Wonglepong towards Tamborine Mountain. Photo: Ray Hickson

The Aquarian Sun is igniting others but not you. You see it as all fluff and froth – ideas with no real connection to feeling. As others go up into the stratosphere, you don’t. The worldlywise fish knows that they will be down again. A herd of rebels is still a herd. Stay true to yourself. © M.J.Dean 2013

FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month

The January Sportsperson of the Month is hang-glider Billy Miller-MacLeod. Billy grew up in Canungra and has been surrounded by the hang gliding sport all his life. His father, Glen Macleod helped pioneer the sport in the area back in the 1980’s. After only taking up the sport one year before, Billy entered his first competition, the 2013 Canungra Hang Gliding Classic (QLD Titles). He beat some of Australia’s best pilots in quite a few of the competition days, including his father. He ended up winning the Foater Class as well as winning the QLD Hang Gliding B Grade Championship. Billy was told that he is the first person ever to win QLD B Grade in an intermediate level hang glider. His achievements since the Canungra competition in October last year have included:

Shop 1/1 Lawton Lane, Canungra Ph: 5543 5532 Mobile: 0407 671 286 Email: news@canungratimes.com.au

• - Recording a personal best flying distance of 143km from Dalby to past Condamine. • Recently flying with his father over 100km from Beechmont over the Great Dividing Range, landing just short of Warwick. Billy’s future goal is to get as high as possible in the Australian rankings and hopefully attract sponsorship so he can travel and go hang gliding around the world. He says he is absolutely stoked how it has all turned out so far! As the January Sportsperson of the Month, Billy will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. Pony Club Green And Gold Fun

Thank you to all who attended and helped out on Saturday 22nd February. The Fun Day was sponsored by Scenic Rim Regional Council as part of the ‘Be Healthy and Active‘ Program. Brisbane Roar came along with an inflatable soccer field which was tremendously popular. The Fun Day mixed in with the terrifically organised cricket event running alongside, very successful in keeping all amused and having fun. Jason Spurgin is to be commended for his wonderful fundraising efforts for the McGrath Foundation; he is 12 years of age and organised the whole event himself. Well done Jason! It looks like this will be a big year for Canungra soccer with 14, possibly 15, teams playing including senior Men’s and Women’s teams. That means super curry nights on Wednesdays guys! We are currently formulating teams and would still like to gain a couple of coaches too. I have had several offers of canteen help which is wonderful. A big first for Canungra - the hosting of a five-a-side tournament for women over 16 years on 8th March from 9am at Moriarty Park. We have sourced sponsors from the local community and will have

three jumping castles, face painting and other entertainment, as well as the canteen running all day and raffles too of course! Hoping to have lots of local supporters come along for a family day, with a view to making this a regular pre season event. Many thanks to Bob and David who are helping to organise the day. Anyone who may be interested in sponsoring a team this year please contact Bren on 0414 435 919 or 5543 5917 or email bren.dalby@ bigpond.com. Costs vary, from roughly $200 to $1000 depending on the size of team, and how much gear you would like to sponsor for them. Please come along and support our local talent when we are playing at home and support the canteen however you can as it is this facility that keeps our fees low and events pulled together. Keep an eye on noticeboards outside Foodworks for dates for home games. Finally, a huge thank you to Scenic Rim Regional Council for the grant for $2000 to treat the funnel ants at Moriarty Park which were a big drama for the mowing people and children playing on one section of the half field. We are very grateful for their support. Go the Owls !!!!

Mitchell’s

Record

Twelve year old Mitchell McKay is set to head to Cairns for the Little Athletics State Titles after winning five medals and breaking records in four events at the Regional Championships. Mitchell competed in five events in the Under 12 age group at the Regionals. He broke records in four of those events: 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and the Long Jump. Mitchell won the running events and came second in the Long Jump where both Mitchell and the first placegetter broke the existing record. He also won the U12 triple jump. This is Mitchell’s first full season of Little Athletics. He is training with the Jimboomba Club where he is quickly becoming known as an excellent athlete, at times competing above his age group. His performance at the Regionals has earned him a place at the State Titles in Cairns on 21st - 23rd March. Jimboomba Little Athletics Club Secretary, Peta Smith, described Mitchell as an exceptional talent.

one day train at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Mitchell is seeking sponsorship to assist with travel costs for the State Championships. Businesses who are interested can contact his father, Craig on 0400 154 063.

Canungra Swimmers Meet their Olympic Heroes!

Two of Canungra Social Swim Club’s members, Kasey Wilson and Erynn Phillips, attended a swim clinic hosted by the Make a Wish Foundation on Sunday 23rd February. Olympic swimmers Leisel Jones, Melanie Schlanger, Chris Wright and Christian Slater each took a squad session at the Clinic. The girls gained insights and honed their swimming technique under the Olympians’ friendly tutelage. In January, five Club members achieved qualifying times to attend the State Sprint Championships held at Chandler. The children watched some of the state’s best swimmers in action and then competed at State level themselves. Eight primary and 12 secondary students made it to school District swimming this year (an increase of 14 swimmers from last year) and five have made it to school Regional swimming championships. At least two of these children may make it to the school State Championships. Coach, Alanna Phillips said, “If the Club could secure a sponsor, I am sure we could raise the level of our competitive swimmers, getting more to State level and even achieving National qualifying times for the Age Championships. Swimming can be expensive and hard on parents, so if we can gain a sponsor who will pay for squad fees and entry fees to State level events for 12 months for our top 10 swimmers, I believe we could achieve outstanding results.” The Club provided a range of activities to extend the children’s swimming capabilities this season. The swim-a-thon challenged children to swim long distances, the squad development day introduced children to squad swimming and the surf school development day introduced children to swimming in an ocean current and to water sports such as surfing, paddle boarding and kayaking. Club President, Amanda Thorogood said it has been a great season for the Club. “We are looking forward to our Club Championships on 20th March and the Trophy Night on 29th March,” she said, “Trophy Night will be held at the Moriarty Park hall this year and we hope to have a jumping castle and face painter as well as a DJ to help make the night an outstanding success.”
