Over 1000 military and civilian residents of Canungra gathered at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service to pay their respects to those who paid the supreme sacrifice. It was a quiet and dignified affair presided over by David Day. Chaplain David Butterfield gave prayers and the benediction. Keith Cogzell read A Country Dawn Service, Kiara Casey read the always stirring poem For The Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon and Christopher Duncan sang the national anthem. For many, ANZAC Day remains a personal day of rememberance. Five year old Angus Duncan laid a wreath for his great-great uncle, Flying Officer Martin Michael Corcoran. Martin flew in bombing raids over Germany and was killed in action on 31st March 1944. At 9.30am crowds lined Christie Street for the ANZAC Day parade and gathered at D J Smith park for the service. In his address to the crowd, Lieutenant Colonel Tony Duus said it was important to remember those who have given their lives for their country. “Since last ANZAC Day another 12 Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women have made the ultimate sacrafice,” he said. Lest we forget.

John Brent, Virginia West - Re-elected

Scenic Rim Regional Council elections held on Saturday 28th April saw the return of John Brent to the position of Mayor and Division 3 candidate Virginia West returned to office. This is John Brent’s second term as Mayor of the Scenic Rim Regional Council. Prior to amalgamation, he managed the Boonah region for 14 years as Mayor and in 2008 he was elected the first mayor of the new

Mayor John Brent

Scenic Rim Regional Council. His leadership resulted in the economic state of the region being turned around, from “financially weak” (due to amalgamation) to “financially strong” (rated by the QLD Govt). John has spoken against coal seam gas mining in the Scenic Rim. He was the first mayor in Queensland to take such a firm stand and has secured the commitment of LNP Leader Campbell Newman to stop CSG exploration in the Scenic Rim. Controversially, Campbell Newman also publicly backed John’s campaign as Mayor. “The voters of the rural and regional parts of Scenic Rim, Beaudesert and Boonah districts have strongly supported the policies I have taken to the election,” he said. Returning Division 3 Councillor, Virginia West said she is pleased to represent the community again. “I thank all the residents for their confidence and support,” she said, “It isn’t about me personally, it is about the community and it is a great privilege to represent you all.” In other divisions, Nigel Waistell will represent Division 1 (Mayoral Candidate Derek Swanborough’s previous division), Nadia O’Carroll was successful in a close election in Division 2, Jennifer Sanders was successful in Division 4 (where Deputy Mayor Dave Cockburn chose not to stand again), Rick Stanfield in Division 5 and Duncan McInnes in Division 6.

$7.2 Million Plant Opens

Members of the public were invited to the opening of the QUU Treatment Plant

Ian Haynard, (CEO QUU), Virginia West and John Brent officially opened the plant.

By Chloe Pickard Canungra’s upgraded $7.2 million sewage plant opened on Saturday 14th March. Queensland Urban Utilities had spent more than twelve months upgrading the Finch Road facility and have increased the capacity of the plant by 60 percent. Mayor John Brent said that he would like to thank the community for its patience. “Here in Canungra, the population is expected to grow to around 1850 by 2031,” he said. “This makes it vitally important that we as a Council and a community plan for the infrastructure needs of our future.” The new sewage plant is up to the latest environmental standards. Visitors enjoyed a guided tour of the plant and local Rotarians cooked a sausage sizzle afterwards. Newly elected state member for Beaudesert John Krause said that he was impressed by local council’s eye for the future growth of the Scenic Rim. “The planning that went into this is excellent,” he said. Also attending was District 3 Councillor Virginia West and past mayor Joy Drescher. Ken Wakefield took his three daughters Jahlan, Malyta and Zali to teach them what happened when they flushed the toilet. “It’s a great learning experience for the kids,” he said. QUU is owned by the Scenic Rim Council as well as Brisbane Council, Ipswich Council, Somerset Council and Lockyer Valley Council. QUU has laid out future plans for future waterworks improvements for Beaudesert, Boonah, Kalbar and the planned Bromelton area.

2012 Cub Olympics

By Leigh Bartlett Over the weekend of 21st and 22nd April, more than 170 cub scouts and a further 85 scouts, venturers, leaders and parent helpers from the Gold Coast Scout Region descended on Canungra to attend the Bi-Annual Canungra Cub Olympics. The Cub Olympics is a fun-filled weekend with events based on Scouting principles and loads of fun and companionship. Being so close to Anzac Day, we had a military theme this year with youth members being able to achieve sections of the “Their Service, Our Heritage” badge. Lt Col Ian Wilson from Kokoda Barracks gave a presentation to youth members and leaders, giving them the opportunity to draw comparisons between military and their own scouting service. Free time on Saturday afternoon gave the cubs the opportunity to explore the beautiful Coomera River that surrounds the grounds. Saturday night meant disco time. Many

leaders who had attended previous Olympics were prepared with glow sticks, combined with the magical lights, smoke and sound from our resident scouting music man Brendan, had both the youth and adults grooving away for hours. Events such as this wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of the leaders and parent helpers from the groups of the region. The Canungra Scouts did all of the running around setting up each event. Canungra Venturer Scouts Ashleigh and Bryce were kept busy as First Aid Officers all weekend and a band of willing helpers gave up their time to assist with marshalling and judging. For information on Canungra Scouts, please contact Leigh Bartlett on 5543 4323. Ages and section times are: • Cub Scouts (7-10 years) Tuesday 5:45pm – 7:30pm • Scouts (10-14 years) Wednesday 5:45pm – 8:00pm • Venturer Scouts (14 – 18 years) Monday 7:00pm – 9:00pm

with Gina Dignan On the Road to Mandalay is a Rudyard Kipling poem that my father recited to me from a young age. In my mind’s eye I conjured up an exotic country brimming with life; the colours and smells are still tangible. Exotic Burma (Myanmar) has been mostly hidden from the outside world for many years. Now the wonders of this magical land begin to reveal themselves. Discover the majestic temples filling the Bagan plains and the villages around the Inle Lake. Be surprised by floating gardens, giant Buddha statues and the warm welcoming smile of the local villagers. Shop for local handicrafts in the market places and marvel at the ancient sites. Float down the Irrawaddy River with a gracious sense of a by gone era. After years of turmoil, Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy is encouraging the support of this burgeoning democracy. Travelling there now is an amazing opportunity to see what Asia was like in days gone by, with British colonial touches that seem to transport you back in time. It’s also heart warming to see just how much the locals want to welcome you in. The people are overwhelmingly friendly, they love meeting foreigners and telling you about their homes. If the destination fascinates you I recommend the recently released movie “The Lady” which offers an insight into the recent history of Myanmar. There are different ways of travelling in Burma from basic to luxury; independent, small group and larger escorted tours; overland or river boat. Please come and talk to us to help design your adventure to Myanmar.

Canungra’s History Canungra’s Ride and Tie - An Event By Doug Bradfield The Canungra Ride and Tie was first instigated in 1988 and ran until 1995. Tallowood Stud was the sponsor and organised the event with help from the Canungra Pony Club. Competitors conditioned a horse and two runners to travel approximately 22 kilometres up Lamington National Park Road and finish back at the Canungra Showgrounds, in the fastest time without the horse being vetted out. The runners would take turns, one on horse back, the other on foot, to cover the distance in the fastest time. Unfortunately, in 1995 the course was declared unsafe with the numerous competitors, as well as the normal traffic, on the road. The sport of Ride and Tie began two centuries ago in 18th-Century England, where writer Henry Fielding documented a trip made by two men who, short of money, were forced to share a horse on their 120-mile trip to London. In the 19th-Century American West,

to

Remember

the ride and tie was a common form of travel. Today it is a popular sport, but not for the faint-hearted. Canungra’s Ride and Tie was strongly competitive, with many competitors seasoned marathon runners as well as experienced horsemen. Doug Bradfield and the late Dick Moriarty were partners in the Ride and Tie with the same horse each year, Domishal, crossing the finish line together three times to take the honours. Both Doug and Dick also ran marathons and their fitness stood them in good stead for the gruelling event. Domishal was bred by Tallowood Stud. Doug broke him in, trained him and conditioned him for the race. Sadly, Domishal passed away on 8th April 2012. He lived a happy, carefree life on Pine Mountain property 30 kilometres up Lamington National Park Road. He was 32 years of age. “Domishal was such an honest horse, he will be sadly missed,” said Doug.

In Brief... Found This mailbox (pictued right) in the style of Ned Kelly’s helmet was found by Council workers between Foodworks and the Canungra Bowls Club on Tuesday 10th April. To claim it, call The Canungra Times on 5543 5532 or call in to the office at Lawton Lane between 9.30am and 2.30pm. RSL Social Membership Members of the Canungra RSL Services Club have voted to open their membership base for Social Members. For many years RSL membership has been restricted to veterans, serving members and their families. Local non members could access the Club but had to be signed in by a member each time they visited. With community support for Anzac and Remembrance Day services growing enormously, the RSL decided to open its doors to those who share its aims and objects. A Social Membership fee of $5 has been set for the balance of 2012 which entitles new members to enjoy the dining, gaming and refreshment facilities of the Club plus be a part of happy hours, member draws and member discounts. Application forms can be obtained from the Club or by phoning 5543 5524.

Easter Campers Return to Canungra By Chloe Pickard Canungra’s campgrounds were the place to be over Easter as camper took advantage of perfect weather and beautiful surroundings. This year, the number of Easter holiday campers coming to Canungra’s camping sites has risen from previous years. Canungra Showground was filled with visitors as plenty of families come back year after year to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and Canungra Creek’s cool waters. It was the third time in Canungra for

Katherine, Samamtha, Stacey, Hannah, Jayden and Lucas from Browns Plains. They said Canungra was close to home but far enough to get away as a holiday destination. The Priests, Taylors and Davies have been returning to Canungra Showgrounds for four years. They liked the responsible dog owners, the family friendly atmosphere and the space and freedom of the showgrounds. At Spring Gully Stays, tourists and campers were learning how to crack a whip and enjoying the sun.

For Kendall and Chantelle Pitman and the 58 other Pitmans visiting Spring Gully, it was a chance to remember Kendall’s father, Brian, who died in 2006. The family have been coming back to Canungra for four years and touring their old homesteads to keep his memory alive. Allan and Denise Nahrung were heading home after spending the weekend at Sharpe’s Park. Now retired, they live in Labrador and have been coming to the park for two years. They said they enjoyed Canungra’s beautiful scenery and the local butcher!

Free Buses Are Popular

Local residents have taken advantage of the free bus service from Beaudesert to Pacific Fair provided by Scenic Rim Transport, an initiative of Scenic Rim Regional Council Social Plan Steering Committee. Three trips were available last month, with the first during school holidays on Thursday 5th April, having 43 passengers including eight who boarded at Canungra. The following Thursday 12th April, was even more popular. The 51-seater bus was full to capacity with about another dozen people being turned away. Eight Canungra residents were lucky that they had reserved their seats but another five missed out. The bus on Saturday 21st April, had 41 passengers including four who boarded at Canungra. Committee chairman John Bartlett OAM said the organisers were delighted with the huge response, but were disappointed for those who missed out on the bus on 12th April. “Obviously there was an increased demand during school holidays and we will consider what options may be available for the mid-year school holidays,” Mr Bartlett said. Free buses operate on the third Saturday of the month and on each Thursday during school holidays. Canungra residents can reserve their seat by making a booking with Roscoe on 0437 655 560. Organisers are urging Canungra residents to prebook their seats to ensure they are able to travel on the buses and avoid disappointment. The next free bus is on Saturday, 19th May. House Fire in Boyland

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service from Canugra responded to an emergency call from residents at Wagonwheel Road Boyland on Sunday 8th April. On arrival, crews found smoke coming from the front of the residence and went into action. Two firefighters, in breathing apparatus and fire hoses, had the fire under control in a short amount of time. Officer In Charge, Cameron Spalding, said the fire had started in the power box

at the front of the house and quickly made it’s way into the roof space. If not for the quick actions of the firefighters, the house would have been lost. Unfortunatly there was still considerable damage the property, however no-one was injured. Queensland Fire nad Rescue Service urged people to ensure they phone triple zero for the police, fire services or ambulance in an emergency.

Sunday 13th May Something Good

Confused about what to do or give Mum for Mother’s Day? It really isn’t as hard as you think - to help out we’ve compiled a list of our own: What Real Mums Want For Mother’s Day • Sleep – Whether the kids are 6 months old or 16, Mums stay up late, get up early and run all day. Sleeping in rarely happens and when it does it’s because the alarm didn’t go off and then there is ensuing chaos. On Mother’s Day, give Mum a sleep in. • Quiet – Whether you have one child or many, there is rarely quiet in the house. About the only time there is quiet is when everyone is sleeping. Unfortunately Mother’s Day also seems to be a day where emotions can run high - chill a bit and let Mum do the same! • Lunch – Pick a place, any place and have lunch out. If you have a family lunch at home, make sure Mum is pampered with the preparation and the cleaning up. Make the end of the day easy with a simple dinner so Mum isn’t stressed about cooking when she gets home. • Mum Time – Mother’s Day is all about being a Mum and the kids and the family but it is still nice for Mum to have some time to herself. With this in mind, give Mum a voucher for a hair appointment, massage or beauty treatment - this gives her some Mum time but she still has that important day with the family (this also encompasses gives Mum some ‘Quiet’). • A Card and a Gift - It doesn’t have to be expensive, but every Mum would like a gift she hasn’t had to pick out herself on Mother’s Day (not that that ever happens). A card designed and made by her child often means more than a bought one and the gift can be handmade - every outfit goes better with a gold painted macaroni necklace!

Cheap

By T D Hunt Eucalypts! We think of them as great big impervious hardwoods, good for railway sleepers, power poles and firewood. They bounce back from the attack of the raging bushfires but, oddly, they are vulnerable to fungus. If you pile up mulch around the base of your gum tree (your ride-on mower will do that) a fungus will start up and ringbark the tree. Leaves and branches will be shed so you don’t want to let the kids camp there!

Inspirational

Artists

Four local artists will inspire you with their talents during the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June. Situated at Wallaby Ridge Retreat, Wonglepong, the weekend is jam packed with demonstrations, food and original art for sale. Canungra and Beechmont are the grand finale and last leg of the eagerly awaited Studios Trail of the Scenic Rim. This years’ feature artist is water colourist Gerard Walker. Gerard has the ability to turn an every day object into something with new artistic value. His entry in the Open Door exhibition of a piece of ordinary fencing wire wrapped around a tree is the perfect succinct example. A special feature this year is an exciting Raku firing and demonstration. Deb Oberhardt - who is a very active community artist/potter/sculptor, will oversee this event on the Saturday night. Whilst the glazed pots are being fired, Joy Drescher will keep the crowd entertained with Bush Poetry. Joy is launching her new book in true style, with recitals throughout the afternoon and early evening. Tamlyn Geiger, a talented and skilled artist, along with Wendi Trulson a Textile

Weekend

Artist will show you their work. Wendi utilises recycled fabrics and natural dyes sourced from diverse natural sources. Tamlyn will demonstrate different mediums throughout the weekend. Margaret Kirman, with her popular demonstrations will be there on the Sunday. Margaret demonstrates Atelier and Chroma products returning this year with new mediums to excite the painter within. Wallaby Ridge Retreat invites you to spend some time enjoying the ambience that has brought it the reputation of an exclusive romantic hideaway. It is in one of the Scenic Rim’s most stunning settings amongst the foothills of Tamborine Mountain overlooking the fertile Canungra Valley. Why not purchase some Art, come to a demonstration or sit and enjoy the view with a Devonshire Tea/coffee or stay into Saturday evening for a woodfired Pizza. A program of events is available at www.wallabyridge.com.au/events. For classes, workshops and demonstration information contact Robyn on 5543 4340 in office hours.

Acupuncture Treatments Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific sites (acupuncture points) along the body’s meridians to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of qi through the individual. The practitioner may also stimulate the acupuncture points using other methods, including moxibustion, cupping, laser therapy, electro-stimulation and massage, in order to re-establish the flow of qi. Robert Campbell and Sonya Van Gent with the Bean In postcards

Spread the Bean Word!

Local cafe, Bean In, well-known for their unusual advertising in The Canungra Times has launched a range of postcards. The postcards feature classic Bean In ads including the ‘three wise monkeys’, Bean In superheros comic strip and Bean In surfers. Selling for $1.50 each of $2.50 they are a great momento for tourists or for locals to send to friends. All money from the sale of the postcards goes to Legacy. Bean In owner, Sonya Van Gent, said cards have already been sent to England and Afganistan.

Post Office Break-In

Canungra Post office was broken into on Thursday 19th April between 2.45am and 3.15am. Police said the intruders gained access via the front glass sliding door which activated the post office’s alarm. They stole a small number of mobile phones and digital cameras before fleeing the scene. Unfortunately, as is often the case these days, the damage caused to the premises has cost more than the items stolen were worth. There was considerable damage to the sliding door and disruption to the general trading on the day of the burlary. Police have conducted forensic investigations and will also be viewing CCTV footage from several businesses in the area to assist them with their enquiries. If anyone has any information about the break-in or saw any unusual or suspicious activity in the area at that time, please contact Canungra Police Station on 5543 5120.

From My Window...

With the fast pace of today’s life it is easy to forget the important things and to show people we care about how we feel. Mother’s Day is the ideal opportunity for families to spend time together doing something fun and relaxing. Even if you don’t live near your Mum, show you care by sending a card or making a phone call. I remember as a child asking my parents why there isn’t a ‘Kid’s Day’. I didn’t understand what they meant when they said every day is kids day - but of course I know now! For some people it will be their first Mother’s Day as a mum - congratulations! As hard as that first year of parenthood can be with sleep deprivation and the demands of parenting, celebrate this milestone in your life and enjoy. Have a great month, a happy Mother’s Day and remember: When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. the Editor researChing Dear Sir/Madam, I wonder if you could help me please? I have been researching my family tree for the last six years with none of my ancestors alive to help me, but have been amazed as to how much I have found out about them as far back as 1700. My aunt, Doris Evelyn Sparling who was born in Ceylon in 1915, married a tea planter in 1936 and left him in 1942 and in 1946 she is on the passenger list to England as Mrs Harvey with Noel Courtney Harvey and her daughter, Jacqui by her first husband. In several family letters, Noel is referred to as Bill. Noel was also a tea planter and in 1948 she returns to England without him as they have parted and she later marries for a third time and that is another story!! Through Jacqui I know all about Doris’ first husband and her third, but we know nothing about Noel. However, with the help of the internet and a 1959 Ferguson’s Ceylon Directory, I have been able to piece some of his life together. In 1959 he is living at Uva Highlands in Ceylon which is a tea plantation with his new wife Lorna Margaret, then I find them

FamiLy Tree both in the electoral rolls for Australia. In 1963 they are living at 183, Scarborough Esp, Scarborough, in 1968 and 1972 they are at Wongawallen Road, Eagle Heights. Then in the Australia Cemetery Index I find that Noel Courtney (Bill) Harvey died on the 16th April 1975 and is buried at Tamborine Mountain Cemetery to be followed by Lorna Margaret who died on 9th June 1982 and is buried next to him. I was wondering if there is anyone still living in the area who knew them, as I would very much like to make contact with them. I would be very grateful if there is anybody who remembers them and would contact me either by e-mail, atsparling@ tiscali.co.uk or by post at, 129, Cooden Sea Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN39 4TA, England. I would be very grateful for your assistance and look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Anthony T Sparling

Making 2012 Your Best Year Yet!

The Trouble Tree By Adele Spurgin

A little something to perhaps try at home? This is a story of the carpenter. A long time ago, I hired a carpenter to help me restore an old farmhouse. He had just finished a rough first day on the job consisting of a flat tire which made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his old ute refused to start. So while I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching tips of the branches with both hands. Then opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was bathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me, I had to ask him about what I had seen him do earlier. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.” “Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remembered hanging up the night before.”

They will celebrate their anniversary with friends and family at the Canungra RSL Services Club this month.

Canungra RSL Services Club - Pine Street, Canungra Open: Wednesday to Sunday for lunch, Wednesday to Saturday for dinner Phone: 5543 5524 The Verdict: With a new chef and new menu the Canungra RSL Services Club is a must on your dining calendar. The meals are as good as any you will find locally and the prices are affordable. It’s not often a meal arrives and the aroma sends me into a frenzy, but the new chef at Canungra RSL Services Club managed just that. The homemade Chicken and Vegetable Pie was accompanied by the most aromatic vegetables I have ever encountered. Next to me, a gentleman devoured his beef burgundy, looked around sheepishly and drank the remaining gravy straight from the ramikin dish - it was that good. Stephen Corrado, who took over the catering in April this year, brings a wonderful new dimension to dining at the Canungra RSL Services Club. The meals are still very well priced but the quality is on a par with any Gold Coast or Brisbane restaurant. He has also given a member’s price on the menus, which makes the Club’s new Social Membership all the more attractive. The service was good - a little slow on the night - but the girls who were waitressing were friendly and had a ready smile for everyone. With a great new menu, talented chef and friendly and efficient staff the RSL is a ‘must try’.

By T D Hunt In the arid Australian bush leaf litter takes a long time to break down to humus. When rain falls the process is greatly accelerated, and esters, amines and terpenes are released into the atmosphere. Some are aromatic and so we can smell the effect of rain on dry country. It is particularly noticeable when rain falls on decomposing bitumen. Those Hydro-Nitro-Carbo compounds affect our brains, as any speed freak, drinker or glue-sniffer will attest. You will find people enjoying them in a mud

wallow, or when they bury their face in the damp sheets coming in off the line. When rain comes after a dry spell car drivers go funny: they drive into bogs and drive off causeways. Some people hurl themselves into swollen creeks; others seize plastic buckets and go yabbying on the floodways. My barber reckons that hair grows faster, and I have a friend who admits that even compost gets her highly delighted. I have some sympathy for those who are susceptible to the wet, but I suppose it has something to do with survival of the fittest.

bLue-FaCed honeyeaTer (enTomyZon CyanoTis)

Over the years, many people have come to me asking about particular birds that they see regularly but are unable to identify. One such bird is the Blue-faced Honeyeater. This bird is easily recognised by its blue facial eye patch, white chest and olive-green back/tail. These birds are also one of the largest Australian honeyeaters. Immature birds have an olive-green eye patch and dull grey bib. The Blue-faced Honeyeater is one of the largest in the Honeyeater family. Usually, these birds are seen singly or in pairs. They are usually very boisterous birds and can be easily observed foraging amongst foliage and blossom. The Blue-faced Honeyeater can also be an aggressive bird species and I have seen these birds often squabbling with Noisy Miners. Blue-faced Honeyeaters have adapted well to being around humans and now readily utilise gardens, orchards, parks, and golf courses in their quest for finding food. The Blue-faced Honeyeater More natural habitats that the birds can be located in include scrubs, watercourses, woodlands and open forests. The range of the Blue-faced Honeyeater throughout Australia is extensive. This includes northern Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. In northern Australia, the Blue-faced Honeyeater is a common species. In southern states, the birds have a more patchy distribution. For anyone interested in observing this bird, I suggest becoming familiar with their call to locate them. Once located, the birds are usually easy to approach to watch. Suburban gardens and parks are where I would suggest people to start looking for this bird. Once familiar with their habits, these birds are relatively easy to find in the bush. I never tire at looking at the plumage of this beautiful bird. The Blue-faced Honeyeater is an example of a bird that is incredibly beautiful and should never be forgotten about because it is common!

Beaudesert Roller Dome is the realisation of a dream for local couple Steven and Tracey Johnson. Venus is ensuring love, luck, fortune and delight. Venus comes unstuck when she trammels the sensitivity of others whilst in hot pursuit of these things. The message here is to be focused on the goodies, without losing sense of the effects of your behaviour. Awareness please!

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)

It is by taking care of all the little things that you will move from simply enjoying yourself, to being able to fully enjoy relationship. The mirror of the other is bound to make us aware of slabs of our behaviour we could easily ignore whilst alone. Be up for being refl ected.

Your Stars - May 2012

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

Recorded by

The Taurus Sun slows you down just enough that you get to appreciate the sweet beauty of your love and work. Without it, the tendency is to get so focussed, that pleasure goes out the window in the name of expediency. Savour your work. Results will be slower but better.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Saturn was an old man in mythology. He represented age, amongst other things. He was often portrayed as one to be feared. This is pure nonsense. To age gracefully is the peak expression of love, beauty and wisdom. Saturn is deepening your outlook, like it or not.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

With the Sun parked in Taurus, you are brought to earth. The act of remaining hidden isn’t a positive in itself. It could be a disguise rather than an indication of substance. Taurus brings you to ground. It reveals what’s under the disguise. Are you ready to be unmasked?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

The Sun in Taurus, travels past your planet, Jupiter. This helps you to illuminate what’s been in the dark. Jupiter has been helping you dig in some solid foundations. The transit of the Sun helps you to make sense of the work you have been doing. It affi rms your direction.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

That which has been diffi cult is now made beautiful. The universe isn’t promising ease but it is promising a change of perception that helps you to appreciate the deep existential aesthetic of your journey of transformation. Stripping away is beginning to reveal the jewel.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Liberation never comes from where we expect it - and if we expect the unexpected, it proves to be even more elusive. Don’t think for a moment that you know the way the cards will fall. The grand croupier in the sky is much more dextrous than we can imagine. Live the mystery.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Neptune is now in Pisces. You have a motor, where before you were relying on sails. There’s no way you can remain becalmed now. The Taurus Sun gives you the sense that you are being held - that you can trust life enough to kick off into the deep end. Shake and move.

FoodWorks Easter Colour In Competition By Candice Wright, This year we were overwhelmed by the number of entrants for the Colour In competition. There has been no shortage of creativity, from glitter to cotton wool balls; there has been a lot of effort and thought put into these masterpieces. The winners were chosen for their creativity as well as their endearing answers to this year’s question: ‘Why is Easter so special to you?’. Each received a $30 Foodworks voucher as well as a hamper full of Easter goodies. 1. Jonah - 6 Years old 2. Jahlan - 10 years old 3. Oliver - 7 years old 4. Symke - 3 years old Given the tremendous amount of effort

put into the artwork, it has been decided that EVERYONE who coloured in and entered will be rewarded with a voucher for their participation. In conjunction with the colour in competition, we also held the annual Easter Raffle. This year the prizes to be won were: • 1st Prize: Foodworks Easter Basket + $100 Foodworks Voucher • 2nd Prize: Foodworks Easter Basket + $50 Foodworks voucher • 3rd Prize: Foodworks Easter Basket + $20 Foodworks Voucher This year’s winners are as follows: 1st: Sharon Johnston 2nd: Kirri Batten 3rd: Ryan Clark

Wedding Bells

Ricky Finglas and Danielle Hornsby were married at St Luke’s Anglican Church, Canungra on Saturday 14th April 2012. Danielle is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Greg Hornsby (formerly of Canungra). Ricky is the son of Mr Kevin Finglas and Mrs Jenny Hickson (both formerly of Beaudesert). Danielle was attended by Angela Harrison, Elizabeth Hornsby, Kelly Street, Charli Prosser and Kori-Lee Hornsby. Ricky’s attendants were Chris Appleton, Justin Graham and Justin Stevens. Danielle’s gown featured beading on the bodice and gown. The ceremony at St Luke’s held special meaning for the couple as Danielle’s grandparent’s, Mr and Mrs Jesse Daniels, were married at St Luke’s as were her parents, Greg and Sharyn Hornsby. Danielle and Ricky now reside on the Gold Coast.

COLOURING COMPETITION FOR KIDS. WINNER DRAWN AT 11AM

The newly erected children’s playground at Moriarty Park is being used as a camping ground by older children, staying overnight in the playground and leaving the area dirty and damaged. Much of the damage was caused during the Easter school holidays when children were seen sleeping in the playground area and destroying the fence and shade sails. “They were climbing up the post that support the shade sails and jumping off them into the sails,” said Cr Virginia West. Cr West said both she and the local police have spoken to the children but she is concerned about the possibility of injury or worse if they keep using the shade sails in that way. “They are not safe,” she said, “They are not safe being out all night in the open and they are not safe doing what they are doing.” Cr West said the damage to the playground was estimated to be between $2,000 and $3,000 to repair. The children’s playground was donated by Kids Corner when it closed at the end of 2011. President of the Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Inc, Steve Moriarty, expressed his concern at the vandalism. “It is just so disappointing when a wonderful playground like this, that was donated to the community for the use of families with young children, is damaged by a few selfish and irresponsible individuals,” he said, “Thankfully, we have received a lot of information about the identity of those doing the wrong thing and have passed that information onto the police”. The Canungra Times was advised that nearby councils have a policy of removing equipment that is vandalised or damaged rather than replacing it. Cr West preferred not to comment as to whether this would be implemented by the Scenic Rim Regional Council. Parents are urged to check where their children are at night. Anyone with information should contact Canungra Police Station on 5543 5120.

Vet Talk - BENEFITS OF A DOG PARK -

with Chris Corcoran, Canungra Veterinary Clinic

I would like to congratulate all members of the community who were involved in the recent establishment of our dog park. Off-leash dog areas, or dog parks, provide tremendous community benefits for both dogs and their owners, however they must also be used responsibly. A dog park is a facility set aside for dogs to exercise and play off-leash in a controlled environment under the supervision of their owners. The park provides a community setting in which people can gather and socialise, and enjoy watching their special friends satisfy their cravings for canine play and companionship. Socilaisation provides tremendous benefits for dogs. A well-socialised dog is a better-behaved dog around other dogs and people. They are less likely to be aggressive, to bark a lot, or to participate in obsessive behaviours like digging. Dogs are likely to enjoy exercising and exploring in a park setting where they will be stimulated by new sights, smells, dogs and people. This stimulation will reduce the likelihood of boredom, which also reduces the possibility of obsessive behaviours. As well as socialisation, dog parks provide a perfect environment for dogs to exercise. The benefits of exercise include prevention of obesity, improved flexibility in muscles and joints, stronger circulation and respiratory systems, relief of boredom and providing quality time with their owners. For many people, (particularly the elderly, singles and those with disabilities), dogs are their only companions. Dog parks give them a reason to go out, socialise, play with their dog and strengthen the bond between them and their community.

Beaudesert Rodeo Club Inc. Affiliated with Australian Professional Rodeo Association Bucking Thunder Downunder

Dog parks enable dog owners and lovers to share ideas regarding training, dog products and dog friendly activities. Most importantly it encourages dog lovers to exercise themselves. Dog parks have tremendous community benefits, the most important being the promotion of responsible pet ownership. All users of dog parks should ensure their pets are adequately protected against disease and parasites. This involves annual vaccinations and frequent worming. Undesexed dogs, especially males, are more likely to be aggressive towards other dogs, and owners are encouraged and expected to consider this when using dog parks. Responsible collection and removal of waste will reduce the spread of disease. Finally, we hope you enjoy the local dog park, and ask that you call us if you have any concerns regarding your pet’s suitability or safety.

Zing into Zest Fest 2012

Beechmont’s homegrown festival – Zest Fest – is gearing up to celebrate all things creative, delicious and delightful on Sunday 24th June at Graceleigh Park, Beechmont. Zest Fest also kicks off the Scenic Rim Region’s week-long showcase of regional, sustainable food - Eat Local Week. Zest Fest organising team member Sally MacKinnon said, “Thanks to support from Scenic Rim Regional Council and our local businesses we’re expanding Zest Fest 2012.” “We’ve halved the entry fee to $5 per adult and there is no entry cost for children. This means that Zest will be more affordable for locals and visitors to enjoy.” “We’ve expanded our live music program to showcase five local acts between midday and 4.30pm. Back by popular demand are Will Miller and Friends, Lily White, Jackie MacDonald and Huon MacKinnon (now in a duo with singer songwriter Zinta), and we’re adding the Latin duo “Gypsy” who are Paul and Catherine Slingsby.” “We have a children’s program

including storytelling, music making and kid’s Zumba.” “A Workshop Program including Zumba, Sustainable Living, and Gardening will run throughout the morning and Beechmont State School P&C is operating a licensed bar from lunchtime.” “And of course, our beautiful local artisans, foodies, crafters, health and wellbeing and sustainability practitioners will showcase their goods and services all day in our ‘village square’. It’s the only day of the year Beechmont has a main street and village centre,” Sally said. Zest Fest is organised by the Beechmont Business & Enterprise Network (BBEN) to showcase the enterprising businesses, food producers and artisans of Beechmont. All proceeds from the festival support BBEN’s activities to strengthen local business and the Beechmont economy. Zest Fest is on Sunday 24th June between 10am and 4.30pm (gates open 9.30am), at the Hall on Graceleigh, 1922 Beechmont Rd, Beechmont. For more information go to: www. beechmont.org.au/zest-fest

CT’s Movie Review - The Hunger Games The Hunger Games is set in dystopian North America, ruled by the Capitol. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in the place of her little sister Prim to participate in the Hunger Games, a contest where twenty-four people aged between twelve and eighteen fight to the death before a bloodthirsty audience. Katniss struggles with twisted PR games to make sponsors like her in order to get outside aid while she’s in the arena. Through Katniss’s struggles, she becomes the ‘girl on fire’, a symbol of quiet rebellion. Murder as a reality TV show/entertainment has been done before in fiction, but its still disturbing to see children and

By Chloe Pickard young adults killing one another. The violence is shocking without being gratuitous, and there is no immediate resolve to the dystopia at the end of the film. It is clear that the Capitol didn’t appreciate having its status quo challenged and more trouble is going to come Katniss’s way, which leads well into the sequel Catching Fire. Jennifer Laurence’s subtle performance as Katniss is the backbone of the film, but minor characters also shine. Standouts are Stanely Tucci as the talk show host, Caesar Flickerman who interviews the tributes and Lenny Kravitz as Cinna Seneca. If you haven’t seen it - you should!

Sport Junior Teams Up and Running!

Canungra Owls Soccer - by David Baker The junior and small sided competition kicked off on Saturday 14th April with all teams except the Under 8’s who had a bye playing at Moriarty Park in what was a super Saturday. Being able to witness snippets from all the games played was a thoroughly enjoyable experience ranging from the looks of joy when an under 6 player scored a goal (that was from the enthusiastic parents); to the determination on the players faces chasing further glory; to the sublime teamwork from the under 9’s to score a goal that would do the Brisbane Roar proud; to the under 10’s strikers running rings around the opposition with unselfish passing and accurate shots on goal; to the under 12 goalie playing in the field and shining up the other end scoring goals instead of saving them. From early impressions all the Owls teams should have a great season. The canteen was very busy with so many games played and congratulations to Bren Dalby and Bec Bell-McNee in the shop and all the other volunteers who sold meat tray raffle tickets very successfully. The men’s team are like yoyos so far this season with two hard fought wins at home but coming up against far stronger teams in their two away games. Please support our men’s team on Wednesday 9th and 30th May at 7pm at Moriarty Park. Hot meals and cold drinks will be available and an entertaining night of football will be on show. The Canungra community spirit came to the fore last month when the Moriarty Park mower had to be sent away for repairs. Football fathers and their fleet of ride-ons descended on the fields to affect a much needed haircut to the grass . Thanks Bruce, Dave and Matt as well as to those many other offers of help. The Canungra Hotel continues to allow the club to raffle meat trays every second Sunday arvo which allows fees to be kept to a reasonable level again this year. Many thanks to Matt and Yvette Boland for volunteering in April . Anyone interested in helping out in this regard please ring Bren on 0414 435 919. It only takes an hour or two! GO THE OWLS in 2012

TOWNHOUSE

Adding Value Via the Garden

ROPERTY OR

UNIT

By Robert Friend Legal Practitioner Director Informed Conveyancing Lawyers

Buying a residential property could be one of the most important financial decisions you will make. Whilst you can do the purchase yourself, a solicitor who is an expert in the field will see the transaction through for you and protect your interests for a modest fee compared to the cost of your purchase. In Queensland, a real estate agent usually prepares the contract for the seller. Real estate agents represent the seller and have a duty to obtain the best price on the best terms for the seller. Prudent buyers retain a solicitor to advise them on the meaning and effect of contract terms and conditions before they sign the contract. As buyer, your solicitor will advise you of the steps in the transaction, from signing the contract which constitutes an offer to purchase the property, through complying with the various contract conditions and organising settlement of your purchase. Every contract is different just as every property is unique and you should retain an expert to ensure your particular contract meets your particular needs. For instance, if you need to sell your present property before purchasing the new one, your solicitor can prepare an appropriate clause in the contract to cover that situation. Your solicitor will give you an estimate of legal fees, outlays and the amount of stamp duty and other government charges. When buying a townhouse or a unit the seller must give you certain details such as the levies you must pay as a contribution to the body corporate administration and upkeep expenses. Your solicitor will check the contract to ensure the seller has made all the necessary disclosures. If the seller hasn’t done so, you may be able to cancel the contract and get back any deposit paid. Your solicitor will do title and other searches for you to ensure the property is not adversely affected, that you will take a good title to it and that there aren’t any disputes if it’s a townhouse or unit. Your solicitor will also liase with your financier and the seller’s solicitor to arrange the actual settlement of your purchase following which you can take possession. Buying a property can be a stressful time. Your solicitor can help you through that stress and successfully complete that most important transaction.

When selling your house, try to think as if you yourself could be buying this home, especially where the garden is concerned. Set up a drip watering system, one that has a tap timer that is simple and easy to use. In this day and age most people prefer to have a very easy, maintenance free garden. Spread Bark or Red Gum Chips over the ground to cover up unsightly areas. A garden that is clean, tidy and full of lush growth gives a relaxing atmosphere.

Tips To Enhance

Here are a few tips to enhance the look of your garden around the home: • If you have a barbeque area, place some terracotta pots around planted with herbs (fresh grown herbs are the latest trends). • Place large potted tubs around areas that look drab. Make sure colourful spring annuals are covering the top soil of the pots. Autumn onwards is the time to plant spring flowering annuals (Pansy, Primula, Calendula etc). • Hang colourful hanging baskets (planted with trailing Lobelia or Flirt Pansy) along the verandah or under the pergola. • To cover up next door’s unsightly shed or clothes line, plant out some advanced shrubs. They may cost a bit but add value for money onto your house. If the back yard has little shade, plant a large fast-growing shade tree in the middle of the back lawn. • Along the driveway or main path leading up to the house plant borders of spring flowering annuals. • Most important of all prune back any dead branches of trees and shrubs and remove all weeds from the garden and driveways. • To give the garden an intant colourful look, you can buy advanced flowering seedlings in full flowers ready to plant out in the garden or place on a table inside the home.

Adding flowering plants can make a big difference to your property
