Cafe Metz, will have a new home from Saturday 18th May. Owner, Dianne Crooks, said she is excited about moving across the road to 37 Christie Street, overlooking DJ Smith Park. “We will have the same menu and the same team,” said Dianne, “The decor will be similar to the existing cafe but we are going to restore the floorboards and put bifold windows in to open the building up. I’m planning to have covers going over the verandah as well. “Once we get settled in we will be opening a couple of evenings a week.” Dianne opened Cafe Metz on 1st December 2006, serving fresh contemporary food in a relaxed but modern setting. It is popular with locals and tourists alike, with many motorcycle riders stopping for a coffee on the weekends. Dianne invites Canungra residents to Cafe Metz’s grand opening at the new premises on Saturday 18th May from 11am. Enjoy great coffee, delicious food, a live broadcast by Breeze FM from 11am - 1pm and live music from 1pm. There will also be balloons and giveaways for the children.

Canungra Honours our Fallen Heroes
Record crowds attended the Dawn Service in Canungra on Thursday 25th April. Canungra RSL Sub-Branch President, David Day, said there were big crowds at both services, estimating over 1,000 people at the Dawn Service and 800 at the morning service. “I was speaking to some people who come to the services at Canungra every year,” said David. “They all said they like the atmosphere better here. I suppose it is quieter - they said it seems to have more meaning to them in our town.” “I think we did our best to honour our commitment to those who died,” he said. David said he was pleased to see so many young people attending services and parades in Canungra. “The younger generation is really embracing the spirit of ANZAC,” he said. The traditional ANZAC Day parade was held from Canungra State School to DJ Smith Park. Children from Canungra State School marched with veterans, the band and Canungra Scout group. Many people continued to the Gunfire Breakfast and activities at the Canungra RSL Services Club after the services. Canungra RSL Services Club President, Keith Cogzell said it was the busiest ANZAC Day the Club has ever seen. The Canungra RSL would like to thank the following businesses that supported the Anzac

Celebrating 60 Years Together
Peter and Ray Hickson fell in love in Hobart in 1952, only a year after Ray came to Australia from England by ship to take up a live-in job at Government House in Tasmania. Peter was working for Hobart City Council where he was to stay for 46 years. The couple who married on 17th April 1953, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. They raised their four children in Hobart, with Peter continuing his career at the Council and Ray staying home to care for the children. Ray also performed some voluntary work in the community and sold hand made items at weekend markets when the children got older. Peter received a medal for service from Hobart City Council in 1992 and was a Treasurer of the Hobart Masonic Club for 22 years. Peter and Ray moved to Canungra in 1998. Their son, Wayne, already lived on the Gold Coast and their daughter Sonia wanted to move to Queensland. Their two other children, Stephen and Lyn, live in Victoria and Tasmania. Peter and Ray have 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and look forward to regular family get togethers. “The great grandchildren from Tasmania and Victoria grow so much between visits,” said Ray. Ray said she and Peter have many shared interests. They ran bingo together for fourteen
and a half years in Tasmania. They go out for lunch together once a week, enjoy working in their garden together and are both involved in the Canungra Bowls Club. “We joined the Canungra Bowls Club after we had been in Canungra for two years,” said Ray, “We had got our garden the way we wanted it by then and decided it was a good way to get out and meet people, and we have made a lot of friends that way.” Peter has been Mens President of the Canungra Bowls Club seven years, and Games Director of Men and Mixed games for nine years. Ray has been Ladies President of the Club for six years, Games Director of the Ladies for nine years and Delegate at the District meetings for four years. The couple also enjoy travelling together. When Peter retired in 1993 they went to England to see Ray’s brother Ken who Ray had not seen for 42 years and Peter had never met. Last October they took another trip to England to see him again after almost another 20 years. This time they met Ray’s niece, Lesley, who Ray last saw when Lesley was two years old (she is now 63). They also hope to travel to Hong Kong soon for a second honeymoon. “We rise early every day, I’m up at 6am and Peter at 7am, we always start the day with a good cooked breakfast, Peter likes his food,” said Ray. When asked the secret to their long and happy

marriage, Peter said, “I listen ... and I let her think she’s the boss.” Peter and Ray celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 17th April 2013 with family and friends at Tallai Country Club.

Garterbelts and Gasoline
The popular Garterbelts and Gasoline Festival hits Canungra Hotel on Saturday 4th May 2013 as their Saturday Classic Car Cruise ends at the Hotel. The cruise is open to 1970 cars and older, with entrants departing Tamborine Showground at 12 noon and arriving at Canungra Hotel at 1.30pm. Brisbane Hillbilly/Rockabilly sensations Corn Liquor will play a free show from 2pm until 4pm and locals and guests are invited to come out, enjoy the music and nostalgia. The Festival itself began in 2005 on Tamborine Mountain and has grown in
popularity, number of events and number of venues over the last eight years. It starts with the Rockabilly Ball at the Vonda Youngman Centre on Friday 3rd May and continues over the weekend with the car cruise, Vintage Soap Box Derby, movie matinee and pin up contest on the Saturday and the Sunday Night Wind Down. A Kustom Kulture Art Exhibition is held on Friday and Saturday at Tamborine Showground. There are more events over the weekend. Garterbelts and Gasoline Festival comes to Canungra on Saturday 4th May
Canungra AH & I Society Treasurer, Jodie Devlin, presented Canungra Pony Club and Canungra Scouts with cheques for $1,452 each for running the canteen at the Twilight Bull Ride and Canungra Show in 2012. The presentation took place at the Campdraft on Sunday 20th April where both the Pony Club and Scouts were again working together in the canteen. “Their help is invaluable for these events,” said Jodie, “It is a good situation for everyone, we need the assistance with catering and it gives both organisations an opportunity to raise money.”

Eat Local Week On The Boil
Scenic Rim food and beverage retailers, growers and producers are being invited to help cook up another great selection of activities for Eat Local Week 2013. Mayor John Brent is encouraging local food and beverage businesses to get involved in the event by submitting proposed activities for inclusion in this year’s program, scheduled to run from 23rd - 30th June. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our primary producers, tourism operators and food retailers, wineries, distilleries and breweries to promote their services to a wide audience both within and beyond our region.” “We’ve ramped up promotional efforts this year to encourage more people than ever before to come and experience the high quality produce and fresh food we have on offer here in the Scenic Rim,” Cr Brent said. “Eat Local Week is all about educating and empowering people to buy and eat locally, which will help to support the food and beverage producers that support the Scenic Rim.” Businesses interested in taking part are not required to hold a special event to be included in the program. They may already be doing something that could be featured, such as a farm tour, wine appreciation session, cooking class or kids’ workshop. Local Resident Rides to Conquer Cancer! Graham Ireland of Boyland has committed to conquering cancer by participating in The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer, benefiting Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). He will join thousands of other men and women in a history-making ride from 17th to 18th August 2013. Graham will take part in the two-day ride through Queensland’s scenic countryside with a night of camping. Riders will support breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at QIMR. With one in two Australians diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, Graham is rallying for the cause and cycling in The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer after losing a great friend by the name of Edwin Little. “He has been a massive inspiration to me in my life and his spirit will continue to boost my drive through life,” said Graham. “Also, the young wife of another close friend is currently trying to fight her way through cancer. It is because of these people I think this is a great cause.” This Ride will not be easy, but it is a lot easier than dealing with the awful reality of cancer.”

End of an Era For Golf Club
Canungra Golf Club will lose it’s current club house in early May when the building will be demolished due to safety concerns. Defence spokesperson Paul Lineham, said the course and building were Defence assets and the decision had to be made to demolish the building when it became uneconomical to repair it. Club President, Neil Connolly said he hoped to have another building in place as soon as possible following the demolition to ensure the Club’s members and visitors to the course are not inconvenienced. “We are greatful to Defence for the assistance they have given us during this process,” said Neil, “They have bent over backwards to help us. “We now have a lease arrangement for

the course, which we didn’t have before.” Contractors will take over the building on 6th May. The demolition and clean up of the site is expected to take up to two weeks. The Club is currently negotiating for the course to remain open during this time, however this will depend on safety concerns due to the asbestos in the building. “We are trying to keep the course open so that we can continue our normal competitions,” said Neil. Canungra Golf Club operates a Ladies, Mens and Mixed Competition on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays respectively. For information about the Club opening days please call 5543 4620.
Convent Of The Sacred Heart, Canungra By Chloe Pickard Did you know that the Canungra Hotel was once home to a school of nuns and children seeking refuge from wartime Brisbane? The year was 1942, midway through World War II. The all-girls Convent of the Sacred Heart was still open in Stuartholme, which had been officially listed as a safe area of Brisbane. However by 1942, because of the threat of the Japanese invading or bombing Brisbane, schools were no longer allowed within a 50 km radius of the city. Canungra was fifty miles from Brisbane, and as a small place well away from danger it suited the needs of the school. Charles and Vera Earle owned the Canungra Hotel, and it and a nearby cottage were rented from them by the nuns for £10 a week. The move from Stuartholme was supervised by Reverend Mother Nora Leyne, who was well-known for her organisational skills in the church. The majority of the evacuation was carried out within three intensive days, where furniture such as beds, desks and chapel furnishings were all carried in to transform the hotel into a school. The bar was turned into a classroom. Almost all the original staff from Stuartholme stayed at Canungra and enjoyed it, although Mistress of Studies Mother Joan Percy-Dove was afraid of the bull and cow that lived beside the cottage in a paddock. When not learning, the children swam in the Canungra Creek (then named Coburg River) and enjoyed going for long walks. Her full-length habit did not prevent one teacher, Mother Sykes, accompanying the students for walks, although once she did stop having climbed half of a truly sharp hill named ‘Mount Misery’. The soldiers training at the Jungle Warfare Centre would sometimes come over to the hotel for afternoon tea, which must have been a welcome respite for them from the famously and justifiably tough Centre. The relocation was such a success that the nuns even advertised in the Catholic Leader for more boarders. Craft Extravaganza Mothers Day By Lloyd and Dorothy Holloway Our Craft Extravaganza for Mother’s Day is now in its eleventh year. The next Extravaganza will take place from 9th to 12th May 2013 at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre in Main Street, North Tamborine and will be open each day from 10am to 4pm. An Honour to Represent Canungra
During his campaign for re-election, Member for Wright Scott Buchholz has travelled around the Scenic Rim, including Canungra, to discuss issues with the locals such as the NBN rollout. “In order to influence a change of government, we’ve got to get out of bed early every morning and go to bed late reminding the people of Canungra of what the world used to look like when we were in government and what it looks like now,” he said. He said that if elected, the coalition will inherit a $30 billion debt from the current government, and would not be a big spending government. “There will not be big promises, because it would be fiscally irresponsible for us to be spending money,” said Scott. He felt the coalition’s image of being negative is undeserved, as he says the coalition just doesn’t support bad policy. “Statistically, we support 87% of the bills that go before the house.”
Among the things the Coalition doesn’t support is Labor’s NBN scheme. Mr Buchholz said the Coalition’s broadband plan will be ‘significantly different’ from the current Labor rollout as the fibres used to connect houses to the internet will connect to streets rather than to every individual house, and people who have no need or desire to be connected will not be. His message for the people of Canungra is one of gratitude. “I never lose the opportunity, to thank them for the honour that they’ve bestowed upon me for being their representative,” he said. “And I don’t use the word honour lightly. It is truly a privilege and an honour to stand on the floor of the Australian parliament and hopefully influence the direction of the nation and doing that with the interests of the people of Canungra and my electorate at mind.” The Federal Election will be held on Saturday 14th September 2013.

From My Window...
I’m afraid I’m going to be a little self-indulgent in this month’s column, but I think you’ll forgive me. Some readers will remember my little dog, Humphrey, who used to sit under my desk when Stu ran the paper from the Canungra Motel. Humphrey was given the title of Assistant Editor of the Times and loved greeting people when they came into the office. On Tuesday 23rd April, Humphrey (pictured above) passed away. He looked like he had gone to sleep in the sun and quietly slipped away during the afternoon. It was a peaceful end to his 16 years. Humphrey was two and a half when I adopted him from the Animal Welfare League at Coombabah. He quickly became known as the ‘PR’ Dog at Yandooya Farmstay, and later enjoyed his morning visits at Canungra State School where he showed off his breakdancing! He was a loyal and loving companion for our family for thirteen years and will be missed. “Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe, we are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.” Roger Caras

Mowing Over Child Abuse
Canungra was the first stop on The Mower Man, Claude Harvey’s trek to raise money for Bravehearts - an organisation dedicated to supporting survivors of child abuse and educating children to help prevent abuse. Claude came through Canungra on 15th April with his customised mower, seeking donations for the charity he has been raising funds for the past 10 years. He has raised over half a million dollars in that time. Claude said he started raising money for Bravehearts after hearing of two children who were abused as three and four year olds. “The person who did it was 16 and he was set free - the girls got a life sentence,” he said. Claude will travel from his home on the Gold Coast to Townsville over 105 days. His journey will cover 49 towns throughout Queensland. When he started raising money for Bravehearts, he pushed the mower from town to town, however now days the 68 year old drives between towns. “I could get a fine if I push the mower along the highway,” he said. Bravehearts Founder and Executive Director Hetty Johnston, praised Claude’s ongoing efforts to help raise awareness and funds in a bid to stop child sexual assault.

The Company You Keep
Rated: R. Length: 2 hours, 5 mins. Director: Robert Redford Cast: Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Jenkins, Stanley Tucci. Nick Sloan (Robert Redford) used to be a member of the radical Weatherman group, until he took part in a bank robbery that ended in the death of a guard. He went underground and created a false identity as a defence lawyer, even getting married and having a daughter. When one of his fellow underground Weathermen (Susan Saradon) is arrested, journalist Ben Sheppard (Shia LaBeouf) links her back to him. Now Nick must try and find his ex-lover who can clear his name of the guard’s murder while Ben tries to follow the biggest story of his career. The Company You Keep has a great supporting cast made up of actors like Anna Kendrick, Chris Cooper and Brendan Gleeson, and one of Shia LaBeouf’s best performances yet. Although the film is certainly left-leaning, it gives all sides of the story a voice. But while it raises questions about idealism and the media, it doesn’t really answer any of them well and I found the ending a let-down after the complex set up.

Glossy Black-Cockatoo Survey
Clear winter days are expected for the fourth annual Glossy BlackCockatoo survey on Sunday 19th May. The success of the survey relies on volunteer help from trained or experienced bird watchers who can spend their time, in what is essentially a lovely day outdoors recording any Glossy sightings or food trees. The Glossy Black-Cockatoo is listed as a threatened species in Queensland. The eastern subspecies Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami is distributed throughout south-eastern Queensland (SEQ). Despite several agencies maintaining databases for many years, there is still little knowledge of the estimated population size and distribution of the species in the region. The Glossy Black Conservancy initiated the Glossy Black-Cockatoo Birding Day in 2009. The aim of the census is to gain a better understanding of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo distribution, habitat use and population demographics over time. Want to help? Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre, Western Australia By Melissa Whitby One of my biggest passions is threatened bird species in Australia and worldwide and for years I have been interested in the plight of cockatoo species in Western Australia. As always, the best way to learn is by hands on experience. Through my many contacts, I became aware of a cockatoo rehabilitation centre called Kaarakin on the outskirts of Perth. I decided to join their volunteer program and in March this year spent ten amazing days getting some up close and personal encounters with Western Australia’s black cockatoos. Kaarakin is a non-profit organisation established in 2008 with the vision of providing conservation support for Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, Baudin’s Black Cockatoo and the Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. Unfortunately, these species face many perils such as being shot, hit by cars, falling out of nests and illegal poaching of nests. When birds are injured, staff from Kaarakin take them to Perth Zoo for physical examination. Depending on the nature of the birds’ injuries, the birds are taken back to Kaarakin to receive intensive treatment in the hope that they can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.
Kaarakin works closely with WA’s Department Of Environment and Conservation regarding any birds that will be released back into the wild. Unfortunately, some birds do not recover and others are not fit for release. The birds that cannot be released stay on at Kaarakin and are placed into breeding aviaries with the intent to release their young into the wild. Volunteers play a vital role in the day to day running of Kaarakin. Some of the duties I undertook were: cleaning aviaries, feeding and watering cockatoos, weeding, cleaning the vet clinic, browse enrichment, helping feed kangaroos and feeding of baby cockatoos. All of the staff and volunteers I met at Kaarakin were very dedicated individuals who were only too happy to teach a Queensland bird nut about the cockatoos. My time there was an extremely rewarding experience and enabled me to feel I was contributing to an overall vision to reverse the decline of some of WA’s most iconic bird species. Those of you who submitted solar panel paperwork prior to 9th June 2012 and are eligible for the 44c feed in tariff, have until 28th June 2013 to: 1. Have their contract agreement from Energex signed and returned to Energex. 2. Solar P.V. System installed, operational and ready for change in metering. 3. Their electrical work request submitted to Energex. Currently demand is high and supply of materials is under pressure. If you have your paperwork in place act fast to avoid missing out on the 44c feed in tariff. Make the most of your solar panel installation and eliminate or reduce your power bill. As the current feed in Tariff is 8c, with Origon offering an additional 6c and AGL offering an additional 8c, grid connected solar power is still definitely worthwhile as the cost of systems has reduced over the last 12 months. For anyone who doesn’t have the 44c Tariff paperwork in place and is interested in solar power things are still looking ok.

Membership has steadily increased and their proactive involvement in representing Canungra business interests as well as those of the broader community are to be commended, especially when they all run businesses of their own. Thank you for your commitment to our town and its future. Scenic Rim Planning Scheme Begins Work has begun on this milestone document which will bring the three existing planning schemes - Boonah, Beaudesert and Ipswich - together as one document which will bring consistency and shape to the future of Scenic Rim. This is a significant undertaking and residents will be extensively consulted throughout the different developmental stages of the project. Recently the State Government enacted ‘greentape’ reduction measures which cut the regulatory burden on nearly 10,000 small businesses in Queensland (including most motor vehicles workshops) by removing the need for an annual environmental licence to be obtained for 20 low risk environmental activities – saving businesses over $6 million in fees annually, up to $1500 per business. These businesses will still have to comply with a set of environmental protection regulations, and departmental officers will police compliance. On 16th April, Parliament passed Australia’s toughest anti-hooning laws to simplify the process of impounding vehicles repeatedly used in hooning. These laws empower our police to tackle hooning. Vehicles used in hooning may be crushed or sold after two hooning offences have been committed and high-level speeding (40km/h or more over the speed limit) has been added to offences where crushing or sale may occur. We are sending a message to people who endanger their lives and the lives of others on our roads that their behaviour will not be tolerated.

Investigative geological work has continued on the Goat Track following the significant slippage on the road during January’s bad weather. The ground continues to shift, and Main Roads will advise the expected schedule for repair and re-opening as soon as possible. In conjunction with the QLD Music Festival, the Government is holding a Rise and Shine Queensland concert tour to flood-affected regions across Queensland, including an event to be held on 26 May from 1pm – 5pm at the Tamborine Mountain Sports Association Grounds. These events will provide an opportunity to come together and celebrate the resilience of our community as repair and restoration work continues. Nominations for the Queensland Carers Advisory Council close on 29 May 2013. The Council advises the Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services on strategies to increase recognition and advancing the interests of carers. Foodworks March Sportsperson of the Month The Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month for March is hockey goalkeeper Liam Foxe. Playing for the Coomera Hockey Club, Liam has achieved outstanding success over the past couple of seasons. In 2011, at only nine years of age, he was selected to represent the Gold Coast Under 11 Rep A team to play in the Coulter Shield in Brisbane, where he acquitted himself very well. Liam again made this team in 2012 and was also selected in the South Coast Primary School hockey team to play at the State Titles in Townsville, where he received great feedback from the state selectors. Liam has recently been selected to again represent the South Coast region at the State Titles to be held on the Gold Coast in June, where he hopes to go one better than last year and make the Queensland team. As the winner of the February Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month, Liam will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. By Lana Rankin and Bren Dalby Our Women’s team has had a terrific start to the season being undefeated so far and sitting top of the ladder going into Round 6. Hardest competition is thought to be Gold Coast Knights and Tugun but no team is to be under estimated! David (FoodWorks) Huynh is a tremendous coach and “good bloke”, much admired by his peers and team ... even though he works ‘em pretty hard! More supporters at home games would be wonderful, and there will be hot reasonably priced meals available in the canteen. A huge “thank you” to those supporters who come along already and cheer us on ... keep coming and bring some mates! Watch out at FoodWorks for info on up and coming games.
Note from the President : Having been away for three weeks I would like to thank all those who filled the gaps for me, especially Dave Baker. Fair warning to you all that I will be pulling back a bit next year so please have a wee think about some task you may be able to take over for next year and hey - you can start practicing this year! Because our fees are so low we depend almost 100 percent on canteen takings and raffles to keep us afloat, so please, if you are able to help in the canteen or at pub raffles put your hand up ... particularly canteen on training nights as I just can’t get there and Becky can’t always be there either. Big thankyou to Lana Rankin and Darryl Skerke who stood in at short notice to do the pub raffles on Sunday 21st. Just marvellous! A special thank you to Kieran Knarston for the fantastic job he is doing keeping the fields linemarked. The wet weather has meant that many games have been shifted to our ground due to Gold Coast fields being unplayable and he has kept them in A1 condition, together with the Moriarty Park volunteers who have kept up the mowing. The Canungra Hotel continues to allow the club to conduct meat tray raffles every second Sunday lunchtime and we require volunteers to continue this vital fundraiser which allows our fees to remain low. Canungra Campdraft
A fine weekend greeted competitors at the Canungra Campdraft on 20th and 21st April. Storms on Tuesday and Wednesday again gave the Committee some heartache - as rain seems to be consistent with Canungra Campdraft - but the grounds were safe as a result of the amount of sand put down last year. Committee member Des Cuffe said there were a total of 361 first round runs which was up slightly on last year’s nominations.
The Teams Draft was reintroduced this year with fifteen teams competing on the Saturday afternoon much to the amusement of the crowd. “Competitors were very happy with the weekend, with many congratulating the committee on a well run event and also commenting on the quality of the cattle used for the competition,” said Des. “The Committee would like to thank the cattle donors who have contributed so much to this event.”
