Fresh Faces Roll Up for Rodeo and Show Committee A blend of newcomers and experienced committee members will ensure the 2014 Canungra Rodeo and Show continue the tradition of the past 76 years. After being unable to form a committee at their Annual General Meeting on 3rd March, the community rallied behind the Canungra Show Society with 30 people attending the meeting on 2nd April.

Incoming President, David Wilson, said some wonderful people with a diverse range of skills have come forward. “There was a great demonstration of community support and spirit at the AGM and in the weeks following, I feel privileged to work with these people to keep the Canungra Show alive.” “There are also many other opportunities for anyone else who would like to be

involved. It is a great time to come on board, we have a lot of new members who are very welcoming.” “These incredible people who have come forward to help will ensure that the Canungra Show remains for all to enjoy,” he said. The Canungra Rodeo will be held on Saturday 12th July and the Canungra Show on Saturday 23rd August.

The Joy(ce) of History

By Robyn Fortescue

Members, staff, volunteers and committee members of the Canungra Information and Historical Association attended a special morning tea to present Joyce Libke a certificate of honorary membership on Wednesday 22nd April. Joyce has been a proactive historian for the local community and has cheerfully helped “fill the gaps of knowledge of past Canungra community and events for many years. Whatever the subject, Joyce will have a snippet to share with you with a smile. Congratulations Joyce. Joyce is also President of the Wonglepong CWA and an active member of the Canungra Bowls Club. Under the careful stewardship of the dedicated volunteers, the centre manages all manner of clippings, photographs and historical items. Volunteers are happy to help with your enquiries or if you have small items/photographs/memorabilia to donate, they are happy to receive and display them. The Canungra Information and Historical Association is funded by donations, memberships, sales from gifts and souvenirs and funding from the Scenic Rim Council. Anyone is welcome to join. The Association meets every two months, generally on a Thursday morning. If you have an interest in history, particularly this area, why not find out more by joining.

In Brief:

Craft Extravaganza Mother’s Day Fair

Alert to Residents

A resident of Wonglepong reported that this month they had a stranger looking around the house, claiming to be the son of the previous owner of the place where they now live. Luckily the older children and one parent was at home, otherwise they believe the person would have broken into the house and they are concerned the person may still intend to come back at night. Residents are asked to look out for any suspicious behaviour or strangers in their neighbours’ yards.

Would You Like To Help Kids Read?

Canungra Library will soon be starting a junior reading club on Wednesday afternoons, and they are looking for volunteers who might be interested in sitting with children and listening to them read. All of the volunteers must be eligible for a Blue Card (free through Scenic Rim Regional Council) and interested in assisting with children’s literacy. If you would like more information please call Raylene at Tamborine Mountain Library on 5540 5473 or library.t@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. .

Our next Craft Extravaganza will take place on 9th to 11th May 2014 at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre North Tamborine 10am to 4pm each day. The show will feature the handmade craft of 50 local and South East Queensland craft artisans with all the work available for sale at reasonable prices. Our 50 exhibitors will include many of the favourites that our visitors request plus a number of new exhibitors. As handmade craft is not readily available these days this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an amazing display of handmade craft and the opportunity to purchase a special gift for Mother, close friend or even spoil yourself. This year the show will be a three day event with the first day Friday 9th May running through to 11th May which is Mothers Day. Tamborine Mountain and Gallery Walk attract a lot of Mothers for

their big day so having the Craft Show gives them another wonderful attraction to visit on their special day. Our Crafty Café will again be operated by the friendly and efficient folk from J C Epidemic who do a wonderful job providing delicious cakes, scones ,slices, Devonshire teas, light lunches ,cappuccino and coffee and soft drinks. Many of our visitors take advantage of the Café to enjoy a coffee or lovely lunch and then continue shopping. The Community Centre is a great venue proving plenty of room for our visitors to shop in comfort, disabled friendly, adequate free parking and credit and eftpos facilities are available. The Show will again be raising funds for Tamborine Mountain Rural Fire Brigade and the firies will be in attendance selling tickets for their ever popular raffle. ANZAC DAY 2014

Above: Canungra RSL President Keith Cogzell addresses those gathered at the main service. Below: Canungra FoodWorks provided a free sausage sizzle for those who marched.

Thousands of people honoured the memory of the Anzacs and all those who fought for Australia. Over 1100 people attended the Dawn Service, with 300 continuing to the Canungra RSL Services Club for the Gunfire Breakfast. A further 1000 people lined the streets for the Anzac Day parade down Christie Street, ending in a moving service at DJ Smith Park. Canungra RSL President, Keith Cogzell said, “Every year we are surprised by the increased attendance at both the Dawn and Main Service. Next year being the centenary of Gallipoli will be even bigger.” “Quite a number of visitors said they come to Canungra because our service has that country town feel and strong community involvement.” “A visiting couple who were attending for the first time went across to the motel after the service to book accommodation for next year.” “One young man flew up from Sydney just to lay a wreath for his late father who served in Vietnam with three Canungra RSL members.” “The students from Canungra State School did an excellent job with their readings. The staff put a lot of effort into Anzac awareness.” “There were numerous comments about the contingent of soldiers from Kokoda Barracks who marched in uniform. It added so much to the day,” he said. Lt Col Buxton of Kokoda Barracks delivered a poignant address, highlighting the effect war still has on veterans and their families. “To be clear, we don’t celebrate ANZAC Day and we never glorify war,” said Lt Col Buxton. “Besides the tragic loss of life and physical wounds that are an enduring feature of war, many returned servicemen and women also bear significant emotional wounds. Whilst the suffering that comes from physical wounds is easily understood, the same cannot always be said for those who are psychologically affected by war. Flash-backs, sleepless nights, alcohol and drug abuse, job instability, relationship breakdowns, anxiety, depression and the prospect of suicide confront many veterans,” he said.

Council

Comment

By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

Contacting Council

Council has recently launched a dedicated Customer Contact Centre with the express purpose of resolving the majority of resident enquiries in one single phone conversation. The Contact Centre is staffed by Council employees based at our Beaudesert office who can provide advice and assistance to residents. If your enquiry requires specialised feedback, your call will be forwarded to the appropriate officer. Council’s Customer Contact Centre can be reached on (07) 5540 5111. This number can also be used for urgent after-hour matters.

Art Trails Begin

On the weekend of 3rd and 4th May the region will showcase the 2014 Studio and Cultural Trails for Canungra and Beechmont. Pick up your Open Studios Guide at the Canungra or Beechmont Information Centres, or one of our local cafes, and take a look at the amazing artistic talents on show. This year, there are a record eight studios showcasing 14 local artists.

Goat Track Slope Stabilisation Work

Department of Transport and Main Roads have advised that in the next few months, they will begin stabilising the Goat Track slopes which experienced slip damage in early 2013. Because the site is between traffic lights and will require a period of road closure, the work will be conducted during the June-July school holidays to reduce impact on residents. More information will be available closer to this time.

Budget Discussions

Council is currently involved in preparing the 2014-2015 budget. We remain determined to ease financial pressure on households by keeping any rate increases to an absolute minimum while, at the same time, maintaining high levels of service and ensuring sustainability of the regions’ finances. Scenic Rim Regional Council has been rated one of the most financially sustainable local governments in the state by the Queensland Audit Office, and prudent management is required to maintain this status in future years, as assistance from other levels of government are withdrawn.

Community Grants Round 4

The final round of community grants for this financial year closes on Friday 9th May.

By Robyn Fortescue Members and volunteers of the Beaudesert and Canungra Information Centre attended a famil (familiarisation) organised by Hillary at Beaudesert Arts and Information Centre.

On Wednesday 16th April, starting at Boyland and finishing at Sarabah, all 20 people enjoyed learning about a variety of accommodation: Clandulla Cottages, Wallaby Ridge Retreat, Baggs BnB, Sharp Park Bush Camping, Spring Gully

Stays and about macadamia farming at Greenlee Farm. Famils are an excellent way for the volunteers to feel confident and knowledgeable about talking about tourism in the area and ultimately help visitors to the Scenic Rim.

I went away for a few days and yes, I really was fishing like the sign on the door said, but that wasn’t the unusual thing, even though I haven’t been fishing since I was a child. The unusual thing was that where we stayed I had no phone coverage. Nothing for days, not a phone call, not a text, not an email, not a thing. I have seen people in this postion go into a panic, customers of a certain mobile phone company that has no service in Canungra. People wandering aimlessly muttering “no service?” to themselves; or panicked overseas tourists at O’Reilly’s who can’t really understand why their phone won’t work, although I think they may have wifi there now. Well, I can tell you those few days of no phone service were amazing. No interruptions to our conversations or activities, I spent time with my children and my partner doing things like fishing, looking for rocks on the shore, playing card games - and having the occasional afternoon nap! I know there is an off button, but to not have that choice was a breath of fresh air and I have to say that now, my main criteria for holidays is that the area has no phone coverage.

Canungra Times Turns 9 This Month! Now in its ninth year, the Canungra Times began in May 2005 as an A5 black and white publication which was printed on the copier at the Canungra Motel by Editor and Founder, Stu Comley. Stu quickly discovered that the paper was well supported by the community and local businesses and within 12 months he had expanded to an A4 paper full of local news, sport and events. Stu added his own brand of humour to the paper, filling pages with jokes and ‘lolcats’. He was supported by his mother, Jean and other staff in assisting to produce and distribute the paper in Canungra. In 2011, poor health led Stu to sell the paper to Assistant Editor, Keer Moriarty who remains as Owner/Editor (and chief cook and bottle washer) today.

Food for Thought

As a fitness professional I create exercise programs to get clients’ bodies strong, slim and fit. An equally vital part of the process however is to provide comprehensive nutritional advice, since what we put in our mouths is largely responsible for having a body that works well. Nourishing ourselves is a basic human task - we need to do it every few hours, and the choices we make can be the difference between good and poor health. How then, as a society, have we allowed this most basic human activity to get so out of control? How can it be that so many of us are eating the wrong foods? And way too much of them? What we have allowed to happen is that we’ve left the responsibility of feeding ourselves to others, like food manufacturers, fast-food chains, and supermarkets. They are interested in making profits, but their interest in our nutrition is virtually non-existent. We have a choice whether we eat their products. We can go through life like zombies happily munching away on everything that is offered to us, or we can take responsibility for our health and make educated choices on which items we eat, and which ones are better left on the shelf. The less processed the food is the better and the ‘one ingredient’ rule is a good one to ask before eating something ie has the food had something added to it during processing or is it the only ingredient? Things like fruit, vegetables, brown rice, barley, oats, meat, eggs, nuts, beans etc are all ‘one ingredient’ foods. They still have their nutrients intact and will fuel your body effectively, whereas processed foods have little nutritional value and clog up your system. If you’re not feeling like a Ferrari you may want to change your fuel!

Over weight or Unfit?

Based on the books by best-selling author Veronica Roth, Divergent is a futuristic film set in Chicago. It follows the story of 16 year old Tris Prior who has come of age to choose one of the five factions to live in for the rest of her life. When Tris takes the test to determine which of the factions she would best suit, her results come up inconclusive, marking her as one of the divergent - a race of genetically pure people who are being hunted down by the faction Erudite. When she has to choose a faction, Tris decides on Dauntless (the Brave). The story then goes on to tell of Tris’ training, the friends she makes in fellow initiates Will, Al and Christina and her relationship with her mentor, Four. Once Tris has

become a full member of Dauntless, she and Four find out Erudite has been working with Dauntless to create a serum to enslave the minds of the Dauntless, creating an army of fighters. Tris is then faced with a new challenge; find out when the serum will be used and stop it before it’s too late. I thought the movie was exciting and entertaining. Upon seeing Divergent I could personally eliminate any rumours of Divergent being ‘the next Hunger Games. Although the story lines are similar, Divergent brings a new actionpacked, adventurous and romantic story to the table that can be thoroughly enjoyed by teenagers and adults.

Life Words….

Your self image matters It’s true that how we see ourselves determines almost everything we do, how we relate to others, the job we choose, the people we meet and the friends we associate with. No one can consistently behave in a manner inconsistent with how they see themselves Some psychologists will ask a child to draw a picture of them self, it’s very telling. If you drew a picture of yourself, what would you draw? “It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head, it is the unique intersection of both” - David Caruso Your life matters! You matter! No matter who I speak to, I find their impression of me is also coloured by their own experience and their personal bias. It’s why when I go to the Bible and lay my trust in what it says, I see a loving God, who designed us and has a plan for every life! In Jerimiah 29:11 it says “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”. Makes sense to develop our identity and the vision for our future based on the One who designed us in the first place! God bless you! Pastor Chris Maynard

O’Reilly’s Turns Up The Heat In The Kitchen!

O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards is turning up the heat this autumn with an exciting new dining concept. Executive Chef of O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, Ross Howell, has welcomed homegrown cook Paula Sproul to the team to spice things up in the kitchen. These two locally renowned gastronomic champions have joined forces to develop a new Sunday lunch menu guaranteed to tantalise tastebuds. Inspired by Australian culinary royals Maggie Beer and Simon Bryants famous television show “The Cook and the Chef”, the O’Reilly’s duo have formed a menu that makes the most of fresh locally sourced ingredients from the region, highlighting their signature dishes. From the a la carte menu, diners have a selection of items straight from classically trained Chef Ross and Cook Paula’s homemade personal recipe collections. O’Reilly’s Vineyards Manager, Tamil Mani says it is the place to be for Sunday lunch. “It is a coup to have two very talented locals at O’Reilly’s and through their collective skills in the kitchen combined with the regions fresh produce and O’Reilly’s award winning wines, it’s no surprise people are making the journey for Sunday lunch as far as Sunshine Coast and Northern New South Wales” Tamil said. The kitchen is open from 11:30am and meals start from $10.50 Wine tasting is complimentary for diners and Tamil and his team are more than happy to recommend a wine to complement your meal. O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards is located on Lamington National Park Road, approximately 10 minutes out of Canungra. For more information, visit www.oreillys.com.au.

Whistling Kite (Haliastur Sphenurus) By Melissa Whitby In my travels throughout Australia, there are some bird species that I always encounter. One such bird is the Whistling Kite. This bird is uniform in colour but its ability to survive in a variety of habitats in Australia is extraordinary. The Whistling Kite has a light-brown head and breast with darker brown wings. Female birds are larger than male birds. Much of their time is spent in flight on the lookout for food. The call of the Whistling Kite is a loud whistling sound and is easily recognisable. Whistling Kites will take live food such as fish; however they are not above scavenging dead carcasses or stealing food from other birds. A common sight on some outback roads is Whistling Kites feeding on road kill such kangaroos. This adaptability has enabled the Whistling Kite to thrive throughout Australia. The distribution of Whistling Kite extends beyond Australian

Page 20

shores. Last year, I observed them in New Caledonia. The Whistling Kite is a common bird of prey. Its favoured habitats include estuaries, dams, open country near water, timbered waterways, swamps and fringes of suburban settlements. The birds will breed depending on the region within Australia that they are living. Rainfall also plays an important role in their breeding cycle. Their nest is made from sticks and usually placed in high in a eucalypt tree. For anyone interested in becoming proficient in identifying Australian raptors, starting with the Whistling Kite is a must. Once a person identifies a Whistling Kite, the birds appear to be everywhere! I am continuing to raise funds and obtain equipment for the Kenyan Ranger Fundraiser. Anyone interested in providing assistance can contact me at mwwildlife@hotmail.com or visit our Facebook page “Kenyan Ranger Fundraiser. I have also left a small donation tin at the Canungra Times office, for local people who are interested in donating to our cause. My colleagues and I are totally dedicated to our mission and sincerely hope to hear from you all very soon.

The Canungra Green Team has been busy preparing winter vegetable garden beds with this growing season promising to be the best yet! Thanks to Linda for her facilitation of the gardening Club program and Bunnings Nerang for their ongoing generous contribution to the program. Seedlings are doing well and we aim to have a prolific harvest over the next few months. Produce will be used in Cooking Club and it’s fantastic to see the variety of seasonal, fresh food that the kids are keen to eat when they have contributed to it’s growth and harvest.

Committee Chairperson, Janine Rockliff thanked Canungra Times owner, Keer Moriarty for agreeing to host the agency while the Committee continues the pledge process. “The push for a Community Bank in Canungra began when we looked for a Bank that would come to town,” said Keer, “The agency is not the end result of this process, but a stepping stone. We hope it will encourage people to pledge to buy shares in the Community Bank and I am looking forward to the day we have a fullservice branch which returns its profits to the community.” Janine and Keer also thanked the other Committee members who have assisted and contributed to the establishment of the agency.

This is your time of the year. The Sun is shining with a bovine aura. By the end of the month, Venus, your guiding light, will be in Taurus too, ensuring that delighting in life becomes your first priority. Slowly lift your gaze from tasks and responsibility - and take in the scenery.

With the Sun moving through Taurus, the world is mirroring your stubbornness. Perhaps you haven’t recognised it before. The more you are determined to go up one particular path without bending, the more circumstance seems to dig its heels in. You may well have to bend.

If you can relax that acutely sensitive nervous system of yours, you’ll soon discover that the world is presently full of delight. It’s up to you to make the changes necessary to be able to see it and receive it. Life is supporting us in so many ways. Trust it – and kick up your heels.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

As the Sun enters Taurus, it is an odd time for Librans. Both Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus. One would assume that there should be an easy alignment. There is an alignment but it’s not always easy. You are being asked to make your delight less theoretic and more actual.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

Saturn is retrograde. This makes you particularly inwardly focussed. We are all charged with finding the gold that’s buried in our souls. Don’t be distracted by complaints and old theme songs that lead you away from joy. Make your time of introspection an elegant dignified thing.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Though it’s closer to autumn or winter than spring, life is inspiring you do some cleaning out. It might be your house. It might be your soul. Weed your garden, in one way or another. This will give the next round of seeds plenty of encouragement to germinate and grow. Be earthy.

The Sun is moving through earthy Taurus. Though you too are an earth sign, there are big differences between bull and goat. Capricorn rules the bones; Taurus the flesh. Your interest is in life’s architecture, it’s structure. Taurus is interested in sensuality and delight. Be attuned.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

If you have played your cards right, you should be in a position of strength somewhere in your life. Have a look around and figure out where that is – and then take a moment or three, to celebrate your accomplishments. You have brought some inspiration to earth. Rejoice in it.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Community is your refuge. To be among those who share your wavelength, brings a gift to your soul that is precious. Those who share your path, reinforce all that is true in you. St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough, Guild President I hope you all enjoyed a very happy Easter with family and friends. Thank you to the Canungra Uniting Church for our combined Good Friday service which provided a very meaningful message. St Luke’s welcomed visitors and friends to the Easter Sunday service where The Ven. Valerie spoke about new life and faith as we celebrate the knowledge Jesus died and rose again for all. The beautiful weather contributed to the enjoyment of Easter celebrations but it also contributed to the success of our first Car Boot Sale. Congratulations to the winners of the raffle prizes. Thank you to all who supported this fundraiser. The funds raised from the CBS will be used to meet the ongoing cost of restoring our building (now registered on the SRRC Local Heritage Register). After serving the community of Canungra for 77 years St Luke’s foundations are in need of repair. While this could be a major problem, action by the Guild now will help keep our historic building in safe condition. We value our building and we also value its importance to the people of Canungra. Rev’d Valerie was recently collated as Archdeacon of the Gold Coast. She is now The Ven. Valerie and we congratulate her on this new important role. Ven. Valerie will still continue in her important leadership role at St Luke’s and on the mountain at St George’s. Please watch and read our notice board outside the church for our next Bible discussion series and feel free to come and enjoy the Chat group every Wednesday morning, or the monthly social get together.

The April Sportsperson of the Month is Tamborine Mountain College student, Mitchell McKay. In his first full season of Little Athletics Mitchell has achieved more than most could dream of. He qualified to compete at Regional level in five events, and blitzed them: • 100 metres - first; • 200 metres - first; • 400 metres - first (all of these with new Regional records ); • Triple Jump - first; and • Long Jump - second. Mitchell then went to the State Little Athletics Titles in Cairns in March where he won the 400 metres for under 12 boys, and was second in the 200 metres. A tremendous achievement! Mitchell trains with Jimboomba Little Athletics Club and they are naturally very proud of him. Mitchell studies under a Sporting Scholarship at Tamborine Mountain College and is supported by all there. The March Sportsperson of the Month is Joshua Torrens. Joshua is a super successful Australian Champion Muay Thai

Junior Champion (age 10-11); he achieved this award in December and has the opportunity now to fight in Malaysia for the World Junior Championships. He is coached by trainer Jamie Tozeland, who is tremendously proud of Joshua and the other Muay Thai students he coaches at his gym. As the March and April Sportspeople of the Month, Mitchell and Joshua each receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. To nominate someone you know for the FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month, contact Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919 or pick up a nomination form from The Canungra Times office.

On The Green - Canungra Area Golf Club With Wendy Brown and Kim Sami David Merriman from Royal Pines has been giving lessons on Friday mornings at Canungra Area Golf Club. The lessons have been broken into several groups so that beginners and more advanced players have the opportunity to learn with others at the same level. David is a very experienced golf pro and his knowledge has been invaluable to those who have attended the lessons. The next lessons are on Friday 9th May as David is currently overseas competing. If you are interested in lessons please contact Lindell Grimshaw on 0418 878 830. A working bee was held on 27th April to continue work on the clubhouse. A lot was achieved and we are very happy with the progress made. Many thanks to everyone who attended.

Canungra Owls Soccer News

By Bren Dalby

We are finally settling into the soccer season and we have another sponsor - Bendigo Bank have sponsored a set of strips for our Under 9 team which is great. We are seeking sponsors for ‘Away’ strips in particular for four Competition teams as we often have to resort to wearing ‘bibs’ when the opposition team colours are too close to our own. Anyone who wants to help out please contact Bren on 0414 435 919. We had our first double header of the senior season on Wednesday 23rd April with both women and men playing at home - the support was great and loud and a lot of butter chicken was consumed! Would be great to see more locals turn out to support these teams especially when we have a big night like that and I will keep the curry coming !

Canungra Owls U9 team sponsored by Bendigo Bank

We have a super number of littlies in our Squirts age group this year (3-5), coached by Faime Hedges and Natalie Parry! Anyone interested can contact Faime on chappellresidence@hotmail. com. Also anyone interested in sponsoring small bibs for these guys so they have a ‘uniform’ to be proud of and help employ team spirit and discipline. I will be away from 8th May for three weeks but other committee members are contactable (see Find A Club on Football Gold Coast Website).

We need someone to take on organising team photos and we are running out of time to book a date. It’s not a time consuming task but a necessary role. The helpers we do have are tremendous without you there is no club! Might be time for me to stand down next year. So, is there a position you may consider? If you think so, have a run at it this year and see how it goes, whilst there is support aplenty! Let’s have a terrific season! Go The Owls!

Joshua Torrens prepares for his fight

Siam Cup Muay Thai

On Saturday 5th April, five local Muay Thai fighters took part in Canungra’s first Muay Thai Show at Canungra Showrounds. The Show was held to raise funds for fighters Zak Tilley, Cameron Torrens and Josh Torrens who have been selected to participate in the World Titles in Malaysia this month. Joshua Torrens won his fight in the second round, knocking out his opponent. Sister Samantha Torrens knocked out her opponent in the first round while Zak Tilley won his fight on point. Cameron Torrens fought very well on the day and took part in a charity match as well as his fight. Brodie de Jonge had his first fight on the day in front of a very supportive home crowd. Organisers would like to thank the sponsors of the event: Earthy Delights Natural Cafe, Snip & Tuck Hair & Beauty, Elysian Fields Polo, Urban Exotic Landscaping, Muay Thai Australia, Russ Johnston Concreting, Marsden Trophies, Afluki Constructions, Supreme Fire, Canungra RSL, Tamborine Aquaman, QLD Cool Runnings and Canungra Realty.
