Canungra’s twilight Bull Ride and teams penning provided plenty of excitement for the crowd at Canungra Showgrounds on Saturday 13th October 2012. Competitors came from throughout Queensland to ride in the event as a lead up to the Professional Bull Riding Championships. The Open Bull Ride was won by

Mary’s Legacy Lives On In The ‘Hart’ Of Canungra

The legacy of the late Mary Hart will remain in Canungra permanently, following the installation of a bronze plaque at the Mexican Weeping Pine known as ‘Mary’s Tree’. Council recently installed the plaque to allow visitors and future generations to learn the history of the tree, which today stands tall as a tribute to Mary’s contribution to the area. Mary brought the seedling tree back from the 1951 Country Women’s Association (CWA) Brisbane State Conference where the country of interest that year was Mexico. That seedling was planted in DJ Smith Park on Christie Street and has since grown to be a wellknown feature in her home town. Deputy Mayor Virginia West recently visited the park to view the plaque with Joanne Rye and Joyce Libke from Wonglepong CWA and Carol Mahony, whose mother-in-law cared for Mary Hart in her later years. “Mary spent the majority of her life in Canungra and was very active in the Wonglepong CWA and many other local organisations,” she said. “This will serve as a lasting reminder of her deep connection with our community,” she said. The plaque reads: MARY’S TREE This Mexican Weeping Pine (Pinus patula) was donated by Mary Hart (1912-2011) for planting in this park. Mary was very active in Wonglepong

Country Women’s Association (CWA) and other local organisations. Mary bought this seedling tree back from the Brisbane CWA State Conference (1951) where the country of interest that year was Mexico. That seedling tree has grown to be a dominant feature of the landscape in her home town and stands as a tribute to Mary Hart’s contribution to the area.

GRANTS AVAILABLE TO COMMUNITY GROUPS Queensland community and volunteer groups who help others can now apply for a share of $1.35 million to buy essential items to help their local communities. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said the community and volunteer groups in the Beaudesert electorate should take advantage of the small grants for up to $15,000 depending on the needs of individual community groups in the local Beaudesert electorate. “Up to $5,000 is available towards small equipment, such as computers, upgraded software or white goods,” Jon said. “Organisations can also apply for bigger grants of up to $15,000, which may be considered for more substantial projects, such as making food preparation areas compliant with regulations.” “I would encourage all community and volunteer groups in our electorate to apply for funding under this new initiative.” Applications can be made at www. communities.qld.gov.au until 3pm on Monday 4th December 2012. “The application process is quick and paperless to make it as easy as possible for community groups,” Mr Krause said. “The cost of equipment can quickly mount up for these organisations, so we’re doing what we can to help them keep up their great work.”

Bike

Competing for the BMW Super Bike Team in international championships is a dream come true for Canungra local, Gareth Jones. Gareth grew up in Canungra after his parents, Glyn and Gillian, moved to the area in 1989 when Gareth was only two years old. Growing up, he did a lot of dirt bike riding with friends on properties in the area. He began competing on 250cc bikes in 2001 at a national level, later moving to 600cc bikes. In 2008, Gareth and his family decided if he was to make a career in superbikes he would have to go overseas. “Mum and Dad put everything behind me,” said Gareth, “I went to Europe and rode for a British team in the Euorpean championships. The circuit is different, a much higher level than I was used to. It was a real learning year.” Their decision to go overseas was vindicated in 2009 when Gareth won the Dutch Superbikes Championship. He spent the next three years living in Germany, building his skills, racing in the highly competitive German Championship from March to October and coming home to Canungra for

the remainder of the year. This year Gareth finished fourth in the German championship, achieved five podium places and a fastest race lap. He finished in the top eight consistently, giving him the status of top Australian rider in the championship. He has been Contracted to ride for the BMW Factory Team in 2013, a position he says he had to work hard to earn. The bikes have around 215 horse power with top speeds of up to 315 kilometres per hour. In the off season, Gareth is building and preparing for the next season. He trains on a trials bike with Kale Reed of Total Trials two to three times per week and has recently started personal training with local trainer, Steve Crooks. The regime includes weights three times a week and regular cardio training. Gareth said he is very appreciative of the support he has received from local businesses Cafe Metz, The Outpost Cafe, Total Trials and Steve’s Personal Training. “2012 has set the base for me to go for only one thing next year and I’ll be working harder than ever before to bring the title home with me in 2013,” he said.

Canungra’s History…

Edwin (Ted) Bode: 1859 - 1926 (Reference: Canungra Visitor Information Centre)

Edwin Bode, painter and photographer, was born in Birmingham, England. He came to Australia, arriving in Queensland in 1882 where he purchased 160 acres on the Commera River and built a modest house ‘Maybury’. Bode brought out an oil painting from England, Close Friends and my Home Road, which stood unframed on an easel in his house for many years. When the Walker family purchased Maybury from Bode it was the only object that remained in the house. It now resides in the replica of Bode’s Hut in Canungra after being rescued from a fire in 1900 by the Walkers. Bode moved to Canungra in 1886 where he lived in a small hut opposite the cemetery. He travelled throughout the hinterland, working on properties in the Canungra, Wonglepong and Mt Tamborine regions, painting exquisitely detailed watercolours of homesteads. For a time he lived in one of the small huts erected for workers at the Canungra sawmill owned by the Lahey family. Bode abandoned oils in Queensland and worked exclusively in watercolours, becoming ‘one of the finest artists to document early pastoral scenes of the Gold Coast’. Many of his paintings are still with descendants of the families who first acquired them. They include: At Canungra 1886 (Gold Coast City Art Callery Collection); Valley of Nerang from Mt Roberts 1923 (GCCAGC); Homestead Crossing, Coomera River 1919 (private collection); Upper Coomera Wharf 1889 (Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia); Numinbah Falls 1907 (GCCAG, purchased 1992); Orbust Farm (Nerang Side of Carrara) 1888 (Local Studies Libtrary, Gold Coast City Council); and - one of his largest and most impressive works - Lower Falls Guanaba, Tamborine (Fall said to be 180 feet) 1898 (GCCAG, purchased 2000). His earliest known Queensland

paintings are Phillipott’s Pinnacle on the Nerang and a View of the Cobb and Co coach at the Coomera ferry, both painted in 1884. In the early 1900’s, Bode travelled to Sydney, where he painted a number of harbour views. Then he returned to Canungra and continued his prolific records of that region. In 1913 he began to experiement with photography, developing his own films and using some of the resulting landscapes, predominantly of the Canungra region, as references for his paintings. Edwin Bode died in 1926 and is buried in the Wonglepong cemetery, Canungra. His tombstone, carved in sandstone with artist’s palette and brushes, was funded by Canungra residents and friends. It is inscribed: ‘Erected by the many friends and admirers of our natural artist, E Bode, in memory of his glorious work’. Edwin Bode’s work can be viewed in The Artist’s Hut in D J Smith Park, Canungra and in the Canungra Visitor Information Centre.

Kokoda Challenge Recognised The Kokoda Challenge, organised by the Kokoda Challenge Association, based in Southport, Qld took out the The Brisbane City Council Outdoor Event Award at the 11th annual Queensland Outdoor Recreation Awards in Brisbane on Friday 26th October. The Awards recognise outstanding efforts by individuals and organisations in the Queensland outdoor recreation sector. The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast Hinterland is hailed as Australia’s toughest endurance event. Participants trek a 96km course that leads along fire trails, crosses 12 creeks and summits 5,000m of vertical elevation. The goal is to finish as a complete team of four in honour of the spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942: mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice. Regardless of fitness level, age or background, people from all walks of life find participating in the Kokoda Challenge not only a great personal achievement, but a way to honour the Kokoda legacy.

A Sobering Experience The ninth Young Driver Safety Night was a successful sobering experience, with over 30 young drivers, soon-to-be-drivers and their parents attending. Organiser Norman Graham and a panel of emergency response workers all spoke about what they had seen doing their jobs, chaired by Cr Virginia West. Sergeant Ken Josling told the young drivers that one in four of them would be involved in a serious injury crash before they were 25. “Everyone in the car is responsible,” he said. “Don’t stay in the car if someone is doing the wrong thing.” Firefighter Cameron Spaulding said that the majority of their work is car crashes. He showed the ‘jaws of life’ used to prize drivers from their smashed vehicles. Norman Graham was the last speaker and told the story of how his son Jared Graham died in a crash when he was nineteen years old. He brought his son’s birth certificate, death certificate and drivers’

According to the Department of Transport and Main Roads web site, young drivers (17 - 24) are one of Queensland’s most at risk road user groups. In Queensland each year: • approximately 100 fatalities occur as a result of crashes involving young drivers (this statistic includes drivers, pedestrians and passengers) • over 2000 young drivers are involved in hospitalisation crashes. • about 80% of young drivers involved in fatal crashes are males. COUNCIL SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT ON CANUNGRA STUDY

Council is inviting the Canungra community to have their say on the Draft Canungra Local Planning Study. The draft study outlines a 20-year vision and strategic plan for managing future development in Canungra. It proposes a vision in which Canungra continues to be a thriving rural village and maintains the lifestyle and character that is priority for residents. As part of the consultation process, Council is inviting the local community to a public information session in November and is also seeking feedback on the draft study through a community survey. “The consultation process is an important step in the development of this plan for Canungra’s future. A discussion paper inviting feedback on the Draft Canungra Local Planning Study will soon arrive in letterboxes throughout the Canungra area and the community is invited to provide comment on the plan. This can be done via the survey form within the discussion paper or online through the Have Your Say section of Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov. au. Community members have until 15th December 2012 to provide feedback on the study All feedback will be reviewed and considered in regard to the proposed planning options for Canungra. The outcomes of the consultation are intended to help inform the new planning scheme for Scenic Rim. A copy of the Draft Canungra Local Planning Study and Discussion Paper can be downloaded from Council’s website. A hard copy or CD version can be purchased by phoning Scenic Rim Regional Council on 5540 5111. Director Rian Johnson has been watched since his 2005 high school noir film Brick, and he doesn’t disappoint with his third. Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Joe, a self-centred hitman used to kill people sent back into the past. Bruce Willis, free of his usual smirking one-liners, plays his older self who comes back to warn him of a threat in the future. Why he’s been sent back and what happens next is too important to give away, but I couldn’t guess what was going to happen next. The film doesn’t have a convoluted explanation for the time-travelling and little attention is paid to any of it’s technical details, but there are still no holes in the plot that come back to nag you later. By Chloe Pickard Engineers from the Department of Transport and Main Roads recently inspected the low floodway on the corner of Wonglepong Road, raising hopes of funding for it from the next Newman Government budget. The road meeting was attended by Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause, District 3 Councillor Virginia West, District 2 Councillor Nadia O’Carrol, Roads and Transport representative Gavin Massingham, Deputy Regional Director David Gross, Scenic Rim Infrastructure Director Patrick Murphy, the Biddaddaba Action Group and locals. Cavell Bridge has been closed for an indeterminate time as it has deteriorated more rapidly than expected, leaving Boyland residents at risk of being unable to leave if floods cut off the low bypass created to replace the bridge. Its closure has been a factor in the floodway being re-examined. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said that having the engineers there was a step in the right direction to having the floodway placed on the next Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program. “As their local representative, I’m going out there and pushing the case as hard as I can,” he said. “Getting it on the radar is important.” The Biddaddaba Action Group has been stressing the point of emergency services being unable to get through when the low causeway is flooded.

Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause today announced that twenty four schools in the electorate, including Canungra and Beechmont State Schools, would receive vital maintenance funding under the Newman Government’s $200 million school maintenance fund. Mr Krause said each school would receive up to $160,000 to fix existing priority maintenance issues under the two-year Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund. Canungra State School will receive $84,550 and Beechmont will receive $19,490. “Whether it’s peeling paint, uneven footpaths or torn and stained carpet, too many of our state schools have maintenance issues that have become potential health and safety hazards for our children and teachers,” Mr Krause said. “This new fund is about making our schools safer. It’s about ensuring our children have access to the best school facilities and a safer environment in which to learn.” “The local school principals and P & C members that I have spoken to are quite excited by the plan, ” Mr Krause said. Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said in addition to the Maintenance Fund schools were now untied from QBuild which meant private providers could carry out maintenance work. “Schools now have the option to choose to continue to use QBuild or to go directly to the market for the delivery of all planned and routine breakdown maintenance,” Mr Langbroek said. “To qualify for the funding P&Cs will be asked to obtain three quotes from professionals to submit with their application. The Government will also ask P&C organisations and schools to contribute to the maintenance task if they have funds to do so.” “I support the Ministers comments that this approach is about empowering local school communities and reflects our belief that a government bureaucracy, no matter how well intentioned, does not always know best.” Mr Langbroek said $100 million would be available in 2012-13 and a further $100 million would be available in 2013-14. “There are twenty four schools in our Beaudesert electorate that will be getting funds totaling $1,656,625. That is a great boost for our electorate” Mr Krause said.

From My Window...

Recently a friend posted this on Facebook: It is definitely true you reap what you sow... be warned everyone. Recently this lesson really hit me. I didn’t keep the top shelf of my wardrobe clean and organised and a box fell out and hit me on the head. It made me think how true that saying (a paraphrasing of a biblical quote) is - you reap what you sow. It means everything that happens to you is a result of your own actions. This can be true of many things, but is certainly the case when it comes to being involved in your local community. Several local community organisations are struggling for volunteers. The dynamics of our community has changed over the last 50 years. Where once Canungra was a farming community with most residents living and working close to town, we now have many residents travelling up to two hours a day to get to work. This changed dynamic means there is less time and energy for residents to become involved in community organisations. However, the benefits of this type of volunteer work are enormous. Not only can you assist to build your community, you meet people in the area, gain new skills and increase your own sense of satisfaction. Want to volunteer but don’t know where to start? Live Local Music at Canungra RSL Services Club Canungra RSL Services Club has introduced a great line up of local talent to it’s new Sunday Sessions. The RSL has been hosting an Open Mike Session on the second Sunday of every month. Perfect Strangers provide the anchor and invite local musicians to jam with them throughout the afternoon. The next Open Mike Session is on Sunday 11th November from 1pm.

November’s line up also features the Owl Valley Bluegrass session, who played on 28th October as well as joining in October’s Open Mike Session. Their lineup includes Stewart Porter who plays guitar and mandolin, with Rob Davis on banjo and Mark Webber on double bass with the occasional guest artist to change the dynamic of the band on the day. Stewart and Rob played together in the late 80’s and early 90’s around Sanctuary Cove. It was obvious to the crowd on 28th October that the three of them enjoy playing together and the mix of music and energy was electric. Guitarist and vocalist, Jamie Cotton will perform at the RSL on Sunday 4th November and Melbourne Cup day. Jamie performs with local band The Tipsy Harlots but will be a solo performer at the Sunday sessions. Originally from the UK, Jamie has been playing guitar since he was 13 years old and has performed in bands in the UK and Australia. Popular vocalist Susie Reiser will perform on Sunday 18th November. Susie covers all genres and sings a variety of covers ranging from Traveling Wilburies, Tracy Chapman, P!nk, John Denver, Cold Chisel, to Creedence and The Script. Susie says she doesn’t really stick to one genre as being able

Australia Day 2013 Award Nominations Open

Scenic Rim residents are invited to nominate outstanding citizens for the 2013 Australia Day Awards. The annual awards are held to acknowledge the significant contributions made by individuals and groups to the community. Mayor John Brent said the awards give people the opportunity to recognise the ‘unsung heroes’ in our region. “The Australia Day Awards is an important tradition that allows us to celebrate what makes this country great,” he said. “We want to honour those citizens who, through determination and hard work, have positively impacted our society or achieved success in what they do,” he said. “I urge residents to nominate a friend, a family member, a work colleague or a

By Robyn Lee On the evening of 13th October 2012 a group of enthusiastic participants took part in a Trivia Night and Dinner with the theme of Royalty and the Olympics (ie all things British), held at the revamped Canungra Uniting Church Hall. Everyone was treated to a magnificent feast of British fare prepared and cooked by the Ford family, headed by Allan. The purpose of the evening was to raise funds for Religious Education materials used at the Canungra State School. Trivia Master was John King all decked out in his red, white and blue vest and tie. He kept the night moving along with his jokes and “interesting” facts. Many thanks need to go to local businesses who donated goods for the evening including Canungra Caltex, Canungra Pharmacy, T-Bone Butchery, Bean In?, Greenlee Farm, Canungra Valley Vineyard and Canungra Hotel. The winner of the lucky door prize of a cooker was Barbara Fulcher. The evening would not have been complete without prizes for the best dressed. The very worthy winners were Pam Moriarty, Peta Tierney and Steve Moriarty.

CANUNGRA LOCAL PLANNING STUDY All residents with a 4275 postcode will receive correspondence about the draft plan in early November and this will be followed by a period of community consultation. Consultation will be in the form of an information evening to be held on November 22nd from 6pm till 8pm at the Canungra School Hall and a further static display at the Canungra Library. I do encourage all residents to be involved in this process and let Council know if the draft plan reflects the community’s views for the future. BROMELTON INDUSTRIAL PARK UPDATE Council has adopted the Bromelton Structure Plan following the Second State Interest Approval by the State Government Minister for Development, Infrastructure and Planning - Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney. This means now that Council has been given the go-ahead to complete the final steps in the process towards paving the way for this new industrial precinct within our region. I know the process has been lengthy but I can assure all residents that this will drive growth in Scenic Rim for many years to come and will certainly provide a strong base for employment and business opportunities close to home. The Coordinator General will now be working closely with Council officers to ensure the development scheme aligns to Council’s planning scheme. AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS I do encourage residents to nominate outstanding citizens in the community for the 2013 Australia Day Awards. CMCA RALLY You may have noticed an increase in the number of motor homes on our roads in recent weeks as campervan owners headed to Boonah for the annual CMCA National Rally. This is the first time the event has been held in Scenic Rim and has had the potential not only to inject significant financial advantages to our local economy but also huge tourism advantages for the region. The Boonah Showgrounds were transformed into a mini city with over 1100 vans on site; more land had to be found at the last minute as greater than expected numbers turned up. Various bus tours to Beechmont, Canungra and Tamborine Mtn were booked out and feedback from those who attended was exceptional. 21st October - Swim Clubs Car Wash By Alanna Phillips The Junior and Masters swimming clubs conducted a car wash on the weekend in front of the school. Mrs Murphy kindly allowed us to use the school hoses and water for the event. We set up a BBQ early and patrons were able to have a sausage and drink while they waited for their car to be washed. Jahlan, Molly, Tiarn and Ebony chased up customers from Foodworks and the rest of us washed. Special mention goes to Bettina, Abby, Zali, Erynn and Malita who diligently washed cars for four hours! The Clubs raised over $400 in the four hours that the car wash was active so a big thank you to the townsfolk of Canungra for your support. Also a huge shout out to the school for without their support the event would not have happened. The Time Capsule buried outside our Administration building in 1987 was dug up and opened at 12noon by the Klupfel Family on behalf of our School Community. Tuesday 30th October - World Teacher’s Day Students and parents took the opportunity to say thank you to their teachers. Principal, Colleen Murphy said, “We absolutely have world class teachers here at our school. Our classroom and specialist teachers work very hard to ensure that the students at our school have the best opportunity to achieve optimal outcomes. As always, I am in awe of our teachers’ commitment towards their students.” The school also celebrated Groundsman’s Day and thanked Trevor Skelton and Tim Hunt for doing a fantastic job looking after the grounds and buildings.

Family Fun Day (continued) Classes organised individual stalls to raise money for class activities and resources. We also showcased the achievements of our Green Team and the work done for many years by students and members of our School Community to reclaim and rejuvenate our Creek bank. The Worm Farm was officially opened by Cr Virginia West and the sign was unveiled by Mayor John Brent, along with the winner of our Canungra Worm design Lucinda Collins. The P&C organised a Jumping Castle and Len Eames (Jumping J-Jays) donated a second one.

To give you the best chance of success it’s important to take professional advice from your accountant and solicitor before you start. What business structure best suits you? If you are buying an existing business you will usually deal with the vendor’s agent. Take the contract the agent gives you to your solicitor before you sign anything. Your solicitor will check what you are actually getting for the purchase price and will advise you how much the stamp duty will be. The contract should cover: • your right to the existing business name, domain name and possibly website • the value of stock, fixtures and fittings included in the sale • any representations or warranties the vendor makes about sales performance • goodwill • a restraint preventing the vendor from competing with you • your access to the business books and records • transfer of licences and permits for the business • transfer of the lease for the business premises. If the business you are buying involves a franchise, you are buying into an existing business chain with special rules as to how it is run. As with buying any other business, it’s vital to have your solicitor check all the franchise documents to ensure you understand precisely what you are getting and what your rights and obligations are. Tamborine Horse Retreat to Host Show

Tamborine Horse Rehabilitation Retreat (THRR) will host an Open T-Shirt Horse Show on Saturday 10th November at Cedar Creek Pony Club. There will be a full equine program on the day including led and ridden classes, as well as Rescue and Novelty classes with ribbons to fourth place. Novelty classes include: Apple Bobbing, Bending Race and Egg and Spoon on Horseback. There will be entertaiment for the whole family with a jumping castle, barnyard babies, pony rides, raffles and a great evening program with a barbecue, mechanical bull and live band. Nominations are $3 per class and a gate fee of $3 per person applies.

Life Getting You Down?

It never ceases to amaze me that in South-east Queensland, one can travel several hours from the coast and see completely different bird species. Obviously, this is linked to a change in habitat type; however, it also shows how diverse the region is in regards to the environment. One bird, which fits into this criteria, is the Red Wattlebird. This bird is usually heard before it is seen. The Red Wattlebird is best recognised by its large size, red-neck wattles and bright yellow underside. As mentioned above, the call of the Red Wattlebird is very distinctive and sounds like a harsh racking cough. In Australia, there are four species of Wattlebird. A similar species in South-east Queensland to the Red Wattlebird is the Little Wattlebird. The two bird species are easy to tell apart with the Little Wattlebird being smaller in size to the Red Wattlebird and lacking the red neck wattles. The distribution of the Red Wattlebird extends from South-east Queensland through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia to Western Australia. In South-east Queensland, I have come across good numbers of this bird at Main Range National Park and Girraween National Park. Their preferred habitat in these locations is eucalypt forests. However, the birds will utilise other habitat types such as heaths, creek lines, orchards, parks and backyards. In the right habitat, the Red Wattlebird can be a common bird. The Red Wattlebird is an interesting bird to observe in the field. Usually, they can be seen singly or in pairs. The birds will stay in a general vicinity and when breeding become very localised. Their best trick is hanging upside down to investigate foliage for a potential meal such as insects. If one is quiet, the birds can be easily approached. Red Wattlebirds also utilise blossoms as a food source. The birds will breed from July to November. For anyone wishing to see this unique bird, it is usually not too hard to find. To see the birds, I would recommend visiting the day use areas of the above-mentioned National Parks and listening for the distinctive call. Once the birds have been located by their call, they are not hard to pinpoint. I would also suggest looking for the movement of birds in the outer foliage of eucalypt trees in the vicinity of where their calls are heard. Overall, the Red Wattlebird is a unique Australian bird species that will give an observer much pleasure and plenty of photo opportunities!

Sport Tamborine Mens Pennant Team Reaches Grand Final

By Lance Cordingley Tamborine Mountain Men’s Pennant Team has again enjoyed a very successful year, reaching the grand final played against Tweed Heads at Robina Bowls Club on Sunday 7th October 2012. This is the third time in four years that Tamborine Mountain has made the finals, and the second time in that period it has made the grand final. Unfortunately, whilst in 2009 the Tamborine team came away with the Pennant, it had to settle for the Runners-up flag this year, losing to Tweed Heads by eight shots over the three rinks. At the presentation of the Runners-up flag, President Lance Cordingley congratulated Tweed Heads on their win, and thanked Robina Bowls Club for making its facilities available for the finals, and the District organisers for their hard work in running the competition. He went on to say how proud he was of the Tamborine Mountain bowlers, coming from such a small Club to have such a remarkable record of success in the Gold Coast competition. Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club is thought by many to be one of the best performed Bowls Clubs per capita, and enters a number of competitions each year in which it usually performs very well, punching well above its weight.

Twelve clubs from around the Gold Coast took part, providing three teams of triples to play against Canungra Bowls Club. Teams taking part were: Woongoolba, Benowa, Tamborine Mountain, McKenzie Park, Rathdowney, Mermaid Beach, Beenleigh, Beaudesert, Helensvale,Mudgeeraba, Robina, and Musgrave Hill. Congratulations go to Robina Bowls Club who were the overall winners with + 32 and to Helensvale Bowls Club who had the highest Rink Margin with + 22. A couple were going out for the evening. They’d got ready, all dolled up, cat put out, etc. The taxi arrives and as the couple go out the cat shoots back in. They don’t want the cat shut in the house, so the wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes upstairs to chase the cat out. The wife, not wanting it known that the house will be empty, explains to the taxi driver, “He’s just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.” A few minutes later, the husband gets into the cab: “Sorry I took so long,” he says, “stupid old thing was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out!”

Sport Swimming Clubs Sign-On Night

Canungra Social Swim Club and the Canungra Masters Swimming Club hosted a combined sign-on night on Thursday 11th Oct 2012 at the Canungra Pool. It was a fun night with a floating jumping castle in the pool and a free sausage sizzle. Club President, Alanna Phillps, said the Canungra Social Swim Club (for children up to 18 years) signed up 40 members on the night. Training for the Social Swim Club is on Thursdays from 6pm - 7.30pm with squad training also available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6am 7.30am and from 3.30pm - 4.15pm for juniors and 4.30pm - 5.30pm for seniors. The Canungra Masters Swimming Club is a new Club for adults of all swimming abilities. “We have about 12 Masters who have signed up,” said Alanna, “The emphasis is on fun, fitness and friendship. We will have a social event every month as well as the regular swimming times.” Masters swimming times are Wednesdays from 6pm - 7.30pm and Sundays from 8.30am - 10.30am. There is no commitment to attend particular sessions, with Club members welcome to attend when they are able.
