Canungra Joins the Fight Against Cancer

Canungra’s Chamber of Commerce joined with radio station Breeze FM, local businesses and community organisations, turning Canungra pink for October to raise money and awareness for Cancer. Cafe Metz owner, Di Crooks has taken up this cause every October for the past four years, but after an approach by Breeze FM to turn the whole town pink, the Chamber of Commerce coordinated events across the town. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Shane Stevenson said money is still coming in from the businesses and community organisations involved but he said it was a very successful result, both in terms of community spirit and the result for the Cancer Council who would receive the funding. Shane thanked everyone who was involved - business oweners and staff, community organisations, Canungra Markets organisers, Canungra State School and the residents who supported the events that were run through the year. In addition to other fundraising during October, Di and her staff organised the final event for the month, the ‘Bring Out the Girls’ dinner held at Canungra School of Arts Hall on Friday 31st October. Di said she was very happy with the result of her fundraising for the month, with a total of $10,740 raised by Cafe Metz events alone, including the dinner. Breeze FM broadcast from the town during October and were thrilled with the reaction from people in the town.

“The community spirit for the event was unbelieveable,” said Breeze FM’s Sales Executive, Tim Flint, “It couldn’t have happened without the support we received from the people of Canungra.” “The Breeze goes pink every October but this is the first time we have involved an entire town,” he said, “We are looking forward to coming back and making it bigger and better next year.”

Canungra Spuds Ready to go!

Dale Mahony’s ‘no spray’ spuds are fresh, healthy local food. Dale (pictured) says people often comment it is great to see beautiful fertile soil being used as nature intended. “People enjoy seeing crop farming from cultivation through to harvest,” said Dale, “It belongs to the town. Customers come from the Gold Coast, Tamborine Mountain, Boonah, Beaudesert as well as locals.” “Three varieties of potatoes are grown this season - Pontiac, Dutch Cream and Sebago - all from certified seed from Victoria. This crop is particularly good, allowing start of harvest at 87 days from planting,” he said. Dale will also harvest pumpkins, sweet corn and melons before Christmas. Call Dale on 0438 062 613 for enquiries.

Last Minute Hope for Canungra RSL Services Club

Will a last minute proposal from Nerang RSL & Memorial Club save the Canungra RSL Services Club from closure? The Canungra RSL Services Club ceased trading on Sunday 12th October after a meeting of the Canungra RSL Sub Branch voted not to accept a rescue package from Nerang RSL & Memorial Club, however Nerang have come back to the Services Club with a new proposal which will be outlined at the Special General Meeting on Friday 7th November at 7.00pm. The first package involved the Sub Branch becoming a chapter of the Nerang RSL Sub Branch and taking over the management of the services club. The motion was defeated with 71% of those present voting in favour - short of the 75% needed to adopt the proposal. The Canungra RSL Services Club has traded at a loss for over five years. In November 2013 a motion to cease trading was withdrawn following community support and a $25,000 loan from Nerang RSL & Memorial Club.

A rescue package from Nerang RSL may see Canungra RSL Services Club reopen

Despite this assistance, the Club has been unable to trade profitably. An email sent to Services Club members on 14th October stated “The Services Club committee is calling a special general meeting at the club’s premises, 25 Pine Street Canungra, to consider and vote on the following motion: “That Canungra RSL Services Club Inc. be wound up and its assets liquidated to settle its creditors.” Canungra RSL President Keith Cogzell said the new proposal, agreed to by the

Nerang RSL board this week, means they will take over the operation and magement of the Canungra RSL without the requirement for the Sub Branch to combine with theirs. Nerang RSL Secretary Manager, Andrew McInnes said the change would be seamless for Canungra RSL members and the Club would still be known as Canungra RSL. Under the new proposal the Club would reopen as quickly as possible.

Canungra Swap Meet

By Chloe Pickard

Canungra Showgrounds once again hosted over 185 historical military vehicles in the Military Jeep Club of Queensland’s 39th annual field day and swap meet. About 1500 military vehicle enthusiasts and spectators mixed over the three day event as they saw or rode in a broad spectrum of vehicles used during and after WW2 such as jeeps and heavy trucks. They could even examine replicas of troop supplies like Coca-Cola crates and cigarette casings. Some of the vehicles on display were unconventional, such as Queensland Vice-President Wayne Norris’ seventy year old British 10 paratrooper pushbike collection. Paratroopers would hold the bicycle out in front of them after jumping from the plane, then unfold it after landing and ride to their destination. “I always like to turn up with something different,” Mr Norris said. Other unusual included a Dodge station wagon carryall used by American

Lang Kidby with his Dodge Station Wagon Carryall

troops, of which there are only three in Australia. The vehicle was quickly discontinued as it became too conspicuous to the enemy that it was carrying officers. Its owner Lang Kidby recently rode it around Queensland to raise men’s awareness of prostrate cancer. Tamborine local Rob Fraser displayed his more conventional ten-wheel

Studebaker truck which was bought by Australia from the Americans, but was never used in battle. He said that military vehicles were often expensive to maintain. Aircraft were represented by the Australian Flying Museum, who had model aircraft from the time period.

PUBLIC NOTICE SCENIC RIM PLANNING SCHEME PROJECT COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS Council is seeking expressions of interest from stakeholders and members of the community to participate in Community Workshops. Each workshop will undertake local planning exercises to identify local values and preferred locations for particular land use types. Attendance is strictly by RSVP only. Workshops will be held from 5.30pm until 9.30pm at Boonah Cultural Centre on Wednesday 19 and Tuesday 25 Nov 2014, at Beaudesert-The Centre on Monday 17 and Wednesday 26 Nov 2014 and at North Tamborine Vonda Youngman Centre on Tuesday 18 and Thursday 27 November 2014. Each workshop is identical in format, however content will be tailored to the venue’s local area of Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine/Canungra.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh month marks the precise time when the guns fell silent on the Western Front, bringing an end to World War 1. As a young nation Australia’s contribution to that war, in proportion to our population, exceeded all other countries. 60,000 young men from our cities and towns made the supreme sacrifice, 45,000 of them on the Western Front alone. On Tuesday 11th November Australians will pause to remember the sacrifice of those who died or suffered, as they have done across the country for the past 96 years. Local residents and visitors who wish to remember those who served our nation so valiantly and selflessly, are invited to attend the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch service in D J Smith Memorial Park commencing at 10.45 am. Remembrance Day is not a public holiday but many workers still stop and pause for one minute’s silence at 11am. Others follow the tradition of wearing a small red poppy, the symbol of Remembrance Day and the inspiration for the poem In Flanders Fields which will be recited at the service by students of Canungra State School.

Information sheets will be available to further outline content of workshop. RSVP no later than Wednesday 5 November 2014 by telephoning 07 55405115, or by email to mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au, or by post to PO Box 25 Beaudesert Q 4285. Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

Planning Scheme Community Workshops

If you are interested in participating in one of the community workshops to identify the unique values and areas of preferred land use in the Canungra area you will need to RSVP to 5540 5115 or email mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Workshops will be scheduled as follows: The Centre Beaudesert: Monday 17th November - 5.30pm to 9.30pm and Tuesday 25 November 5.30pm to 9.30pm Vonda Youngman Centre Tamborine Mtn: Tuesday 18th November 5.30pm to 9.30pm and Thursday 27th November 5.30pm to 9.30pm The new Scenic Rim Planning Scheme is a vital document for our area moving towards the future and resident input is essential.

Momentous Announcement For Beaudesert Town

An historic announcement was made by the Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney with a State Government commitment to fund the Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass as part of their Priority Infrastructure Development Project for Queensland. This vital infrastructure to get the heavy vehicles out of the centre of Beaudesert will drive the region’s economic growth and prosperity and is a key project in progressing the development of the Bromelton State Development area. I can tell you it created such jubilance both in Council and in Beaudesert when the announcement was made.

Future Water Planning

Council recently received a letter from both Queensland Urban Utilities and Seqwater regarding their progress to date to ensure long-term water security for the township of Canungra and drought security. A number of studies have been undertaken by both entities with the preferred plan to date assuring Council that they will continue to monitor water supply on a regular basis to ensure all residents on reticulated water continue to receive the current level of service without restrictions. I have a copy of the Canungra Water Supply Disruption Plan if any residents would like to read it.

Congratulations Canungra

The Turning Canungra Pink for October has been such a spectacular campaign which has been embraced by so many residents and business owners alike. The town is amazing to drive through by both day and night time with pink hues everywhere. Appreciation and thanks go to all the sponsors but especially Canungra Chamber of Commerce who have worked so hard at a local level. Scott Buchholz, the Federal Member for Wright, has even congratulated Canungra in a speech in the House. Here is the link to his speech www. openaustralia.org/debate/?id=2014-09-22.203.2

TCT’s Book Review Climbing Over Fear -

Prostate Cancer Survivor’s Story Reviewed by Keer Moriarty Written By: Carlos Neate.

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

With a little help from your friends ... What an amazing month Canungra has had! October saw the town turn Pink - a talking point for tourists and locals alike. It created a festive look for the town, but also raised money for a cause that has affected many people - cancer. Cancer can be one of those invisible diseases, something you can have without knowing yourself, or without others realising you have it, unless there are the telltale signs of hair loss from chemotherapy or other visual signs of illness. I often wonder how people get through those times in their lives when things seem to be turned upside down. Something unexpected happens and suddenly you are not capable of doing all the things people expect you to. In this community, I have seen people rally for friends and neighbours in times of need over and over again. It is a humbling experience to have to rely on others, something I am not very good at to be honest, but something we all need to be able to accept when circumstances require it. Whether it is disease, accident or just one of those times when you need a helping hand, don’t be afraid to ask for help when it is needed. If you see someone struggling, ask what they need, are they ok? What can you do? Take care of yourself and of each other.

Local man Carlos Neate has writen an upfront description about his need to do something as his PSA count climbed to over 16,000 in January this year. Carlos was able to bring his PSA count down to 0.49 and there is now no detectable cancer in his body, How did he do this? In his book “Climbing Over Fear” Carlos tells us exactly what he and his wife, Stephanie needed to face up to in terms of letting go of the past, accepting hospital help and the use of nutritional products to achieve this remarkable result. If you are looking for a detailed account of a battle with cancer, this is not the book for you, however Carlos’ style will appeal to many

people who want a direct approach to the subject and are interested in an alternative to the traditional medical cancer treatments. The book is divided into short sections where Carlos writes openly about his marriages, faith and the holistic treatment he followed, he utilised hormone therapy and nutritional supplements rather than the surgery and cheomotherapy recommended by his doctors. Climbing Over Fear is available through Amazon as an eBook or in printed form from the website www. prostatecancersurvivor.com.au The website also outlines various products and other materials such as books that Carlos used and how to source these items.

Canungra Turns Pink

Dear Editor, I would like to thank the community of Canungra for their fantastic support during the “Canungra Turns Pink” Campaign run in October to raise money for the Cancer Council of Queensland. Café Metz have run a similar activity for the past four years and this year, 88.9 Breeze FM (The Breeze) in conjunction with the Canungra Chamber of Commerce decided to expand on the Café Metz idea and turn the town pink! I think most would agree that Canungra has looked amazing! The concept would not have been as successful without the support of businesses that willingly came on board, decorating their shops and organising activities; the community organisations and sporting groups that organised events; but, more importantly, without the support of all the people of Canungra who have bought t-shirts, raffle tickets, made donations or participated in the numerous events that were organised. Our efforts have not gone un-noticed as they have been covered on ABC radio and mentioned in Federal Parliament by our Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz MP. This is in addition to the great coverage given by The Breeze. So, from the Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank one and all and look forward to making “Canungra Turns Pink” in 2015 even bigger and better with more money raised for such a great and needy cause! Murray-George Family Reunion

By Chloe Pickard

The Murray-George family came together when 21 descendants of the two families recently reunited in Canungra. A pioneering family of Canungra, William Malcolm Orr Murray and Sarah Murray settled in Australia in 1863. They worked in Canungra’s thriving timber industry before living on a selection and developing a dairy farm. Attendees shared family photos and stories before listening to a talk about Canungra’s history by Lynette Walker, daughter of Violet Murray and granddaughter of Robert Tait Murray and Mary George. Ms Walker said the day had gone well. She was pleased to see the old milking shed their parents used was still at the property. “The old milking shed has sunken into the ground but it was a touching reminder to us that our grandparents built it and our parents had milked cows there,” she said. The journey to piece together the past has not stopped with the reunion. Canungra local Mike Cecil, is now working on a family tree website. He also plans to write a book based on William and Sarah’s lives.

Well Being

‘The Shed’ - Canungra’s Best Kept Secret

With Clancy Beck

The Non-Diet Diet

One thing that puts people off starting a weight loss program is the thought of going on a diet. Over Christmas weight loss plans generally go on hold, if not backwards, so this gets people thinking about dieting either before or after Xmas to offset the holiday treats. But instead of thinking DIET, which doesn’t sound fun and has negative associations of missing out and being hungry, tell yourself you’re going on an Eating More Plan? Sounds better, yes? Try this Eating More plan to ensure you don’t get those dieting blues: MORE - lean protein like chicken, eggs, fish, beans, lentils or quinoa at least three times a day will keep you fuller, as protein is slow to digest. Protein for breakfast instead of cereals, will energize you for the day and minimize snacking. MORE - vegetables, especially green leafy ones. Salads are easy to make the night before, plus replace pasta/rice with an extra serve of vegetables at night. MORE - good fats like olive or coconut oil, nuts, seeds, eggs, avocado, salmon etc will give you sustained energy and provide your cells with valuable nutrients without stacking on the weight. MORE - real food, the stuff that doesn’t come out of a packet. For snacks use carrots, apples, boiled eggs, tuna, nuts etc. MORE - water. Being fully hydrated gives you more energy and keeps your stomach feeling full. MORE - food during the day, and less at the evening meal helps your body digest food. Digestion slows down at night making it hard to process a large meal before bed. Add more of the good, leaving less room for the bad. That way you stay healthy and lose weight without needing to go on a diet!

‘The Shed’ is the best kept secret in town. A private, secluded place to get fit, happy and healthy. In this bush setting, it’s easy to forget you’ve just had a workout! The Shed is a fully equipped gym owned and run by Clancy Lee Beck, a local mum and Personal Trainer with over 20 years experience in Body Performance. Fitness Classes are by appointment. Private one on one training, or small group sessions are available for all fitness levels. Clancy says correct technique is the most important thing when exercising. “Classes are restricted to a maximum of four participants, ensuring everyone gets individual attention and correction with position and technique, to maximise the benefits for your body,” she said. “The new Metafit 30 minute session, works to change your body’s metabolism and keep you burning fat for over 24 hours post workout. Clients love the results, especially for only 30 minutes of effort!” Canungra Times readers are invited to call Clancy on 0407 434 164 and receive two weeks of free fitness sessions during November. Gather some friends to create your own Group Session (maximum four people) and pick a time that suits you (from 5am - 7pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 6am-9am.) or join an existing group. Open Gym is happening on Saturday 15th Nov and Saturday 22nd Nov 8am - 10am. Get along to 71-79 Shay Place, Witheren to check out the facilities, special offers and enjoy the refreshments. Chemicals in Your Skincare Many of you have told me that you enjoyed reading last month’s article. Well, here is Part 2 of my article about Chemicals in Your Skincare. Have you had a look at the ingredients list of your skincare or other products used on the body? Here are some more harmful ingredients you need to be aware of: Phthalates: A collection of chemicals used to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. The main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hair spray. They are known to disrupt the endocrine system (hormones), and have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, early breast development in girls, and reproductive birth defects in males and females. But that’s not all: for the really bad news about phthalates, try this - they may not be on an ingredients list as they are often found in the ‘fragrance’. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES): What we’re talking about here are surfactants. Short for ‘surfaceactive agent’, they’re chemicals that stabilize oil and water mixtures. If you have a foaming product, then there’s a good chance it contains either of these, as 90% of personal care and cleaning products have them in it. SLS’s may cause skin, lung, and eye irritations, and the biggest concern is their potential to combine with other chemicals to produce a carcinogen (substances capable of causing cancer - not very nice at all). They may also cause other issues like kidney and respiratory damage. You can find them in shampoo, body wash/cleanser, mascara, and acne treatment. Formaldehyde: This chemical is used to prevent bacterial growth. Found to be a human carcinogen, it’s been linked to nasal and nasopharyngeal, occupational caused cancers, and is potentially harmful to the immune system, causing allergic skin reactions. It can be found in nail polish, body washes, conditioners, shampoos, cleansers, eye shadows, and nail polish treatments. Next month, we’ll look at the effects of Toluene, Propylene glycol, and sunscreen chemicals. Page 20

Wildlife Alert - It’s that Time of Year Again By Bren Dalby

Can we please all increase our level of caution and care at this time of year - increased breeding and decreased rainfall is a recipe for disaster. There are lots of babies around and lots of animal movement in general, particularly wallabies, in search of food and water. Please slow down, and if you are unfortunate enough to come in contact with one and it is safe to do so, take the time and have the heart to check whether the animal is dead or still alive but injured. If deceased, please check to see if there is a pouch Joey (easiest to check if boy bits present first and then you need look no further!). Do not remove the Joey from the pouch unless it is big enough to hop away. If it is still alive call one of the numbers listed below and try to stay with the animal until help arrives. If you happen to see a ‘dead’ wallaby or similar, please follow same protocol as often a Joey is left

to die in the pouch of his deceased Mum. If you can, move the wallaby well off the road to help avoid another accident. However remember that your own safety is paramount. Call Wildcare on 5527 2444, or if the lines are not ‘manned’, Roy on 5543 4147/ 0421 644 156; Bren on 5543 5917/0414 435 919; RSPCA on 1300ANIMAL. For any other wildlife issues, queries, interest in becoming involved in the care of our native wildlife in some way, shape or form please contact Wildcare on 5527 2444 or, preferably, visit our website at: www.wildcare.org.au.

By Jodie Clifford, Canungra State School Green Team greenteamcss@gmail.com

The Green Team again hosted a stall at the Canungra State School Family Fun Day on Saturday 25th October. This year our fabulous team had handmade frozen Fruity Pops for sale to help beat the heat! We also encouraged growing seasonal, fresh produce by having vegetable and herb seedlings for sale. Some of these are still available for a gold coin donation – please contact us on the email below for enquiries. Thanks to Mrs Vicki Spring who donated some beautifully grown plants for us to sell with all proceeds back to Green Team projects. I would like to thank our fantastic band of Green Team volunteers – you’re presence helped make the day relaxing and enjoyable. The Green Team Working Bee is back – our last one for 2014 will be held on Saturday 15th November from 8am. Pending some much needed rainfall we will be installing riparian tubestock along the creekbank, kindly donated by SRRC. Additional works may be undertaken in our vegetable gardens as required. As usual our working bee will include a yummy sausage sizzle for all volunteers.

Nature’s Gems

Australian Little Bittern (Lxobrychus Dubius) By Melissa Whitby Australia is known for its iconic birds such as the Kookaburra, Rainbow Lorikeet and Superb Blue Fairy Wren. However, there are many other bird species in Australia that are not so readily observed. One such bird is the secretive and cryptic Australian Little Bittern. The male and female birds differ slightly in respect to the colour of their plumage. Male birds have a distinctive black head cap and rufous-brown shoulders. Female birds are duller brown in colour. The Australian Little Bittern can be mistaken for similar species such as the Striated Heron and Yellow Bittern. Striated Herons are much larger in size and darker in colour. Yellow Bitterns are rare visitors to Australia and are much lighter in colour to the Australian Little Bittern. As mentioned, these birds are incredibly cryptic and may be seen singly or in pairs. Their favoured habitat is freshwater wetlands which have a high concentration of reeds. However, these birds will utilise suitable habitat in modified urban landscapes. The birds can be seen climbing through reeds and

foraging along the edge of dense vegetation. Australian Little Bittern have a range that extends through Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Populations of Australian Little Bittern are also present in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The birds can breed from October to January. Recently, I had the unique opportunity to view this secretive bird at close quarters. The bird that I photographed was an unusually quiet male. For anyone who would like to observe the Australian Little Bittern, I would recommend doing some research before you set out! Getting in contact with other birdwatchers in your region, may help to pinpoint a location where the birds have been seen regularly.

As Mercury heads into Scorpio over the next couple of weeks, so it becomes time to face what’s going on emotionally. Once you have some sense of that, then it is time to figure out ways to take the raw material of your emotion and turn it into something magical. Be patient and wise.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

As a variety of planets begin their procession into Scorpio, so your happiness increases exponentially. You love it when the whole world seems to be in the whirlpool of feeling that is your normal state. This is a time of not feeling alone, or like an outsider. Life is friendly.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

Lions have trouble with Scorpions. As the Sun, Venus, Saturn and Mercury, all make their way through the mistily illumined caves of Scorpio, so you become prone to the heebie-jeebies. This is no time to lose your courage, oh kings and queens of the jungle. Be emotionally brave.

This is by no means an easy part of your on-going storyline but it is full of possibility. The challenges that are coming your way are creative. Life, being as respectful of freedom as it is, will leave it up to you to turn all the base metal into gold. Face life with emotional courage.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

As Mercury makes his way into Scorpio, so you come down out of your head and back into your gut where you belong. The Virgo habit of analysis paralysis is legendary, yet it is not the natural energy of Virgo. The natural energy of Virgo is to be earthy, instinctive and as true as stone.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Step back from centre stage. Leave the milling crowds behind and find your perfect refuge. As you introspect, so you slowly gather your forces for the next cycle. Don’t rush to get yourself back on the treadmill. Sift through possibilities, till you find what’s closest to your nature.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

The Sun, Venus, Saturn and Mercury, will all be present in Scorpio over the next four weeks. That’s a whole lot of planetary attention that is coming your way. There is no way you are going to be able to hide under the carpet this month. Come out and show your colours to the world.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

The Sun will be residing in your sign in three weeks. That will be your time to shine. In the meantime he will be making his way through the mysterious depths of Scorpio. It would be best not to jump the gun. Keep building your stock. Don’t gallop on stage before your carpet call.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Mars is making his way through Capricorn. Mars energy is as simple as it is powerful. If it’s exercised, it’s happy. If it isn’t, it gets stroppy and causes havoc. It’s like a kelpie. It needs to be worked. So, work your body, work your will, work your sense of adventure – and be happy!

Though you are busting your boiler to get out and about in the land of wild adventures, life is leaning on you to nurture yourself and find home at the same time. This is quite a dilemma. They are very different callings. It will be hard to temper wildness with awareness but you must.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

The presence of a gaggle of planets in Scorpio pleases you no end. Though superficially different to The Fishes, Scorpio shares your passion for the world of feeling. Where you tend to be vague, it tends towards intensity. This intensity will intensify you. Sharpen your emotional focus.

Sustainable Planning Act 2009

PUBLIC NOTICE Consultation of Beaudesert Shire Planning Scheme 2007 Draft Amendment No. 6 In accordance with Section 117(1) of the Sustainable Planning Act 2009, Scenic Rim Regional Council invites the community to comment on the Beaudesert Shire Planning Scheme 2007 Draft Amendment No.6. The purpose and general effect of the proposed amendments are to increase certainty about the intended form and timing of development in Beaudesert and Canungra and reduce the cost of submitting a Development Application to Council. The key changes being proposed to the Planning Scheme under the amendment package are summarised as follows: 1. Separation of Canungra from the existing ‘Beaudesert and Canungra Townships Zone’ to create a separate ‘Beaudesert Township Zone’ and a ‘Canungra Township Zone’ and associated provisions; 2. Removal of land from the Emerging Community Precinct in Beaudesert and Canungra and its inclusion in an appropriate zone provided that the land is: a. in the Priority Infrastructure Area of Council’s Priority Infrastructure Plans at Beaudesert; and b. in the Urban Footprint of the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2009-2031; 3. Revision of the assessment tables and code provisions for certain development at Beaudesert

and Canungra, including the addition of a new Mixed Use Precinct, a Park Living Precinct in Canungra and greater flexibility for the development of certain land uses such as Aged Persons Accommodation, Educational Establishments and Child Care Facilities; 4. Inclusion of the requirement to undertake master planning for selected development sites as part of a Code Assessable Development Application; 5. Revision of minimum lot sizes at Canungra and Beaudesert for future residential development; 6. Removal of the former Laravale State School from the Community Facilities Precinct for inclusion within the Village Precinct of the Rural Zone; and 7. Associated amendments throughout the planning scheme as required, including changes to the Character Places, Development Constraints and Infrastructure Overlay Maps. The amendment package will be undergoing public consultation from 31 October 2014 to 11 December 2014 inclusive. A copy of the draft amendment package will be available for inspection at Council’s Customer Service locations at Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain. It will also be available for viewing online at Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/have-your-say and Council libraries at Beaudesert, Canungra and The Canungra Times, November 2014

Tamborine Mountain. For enquiries, you can also contact Council on (07) 5540 5435 or via email mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Sport Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby

On The Green Canungra Area Golf Club Canungra Area Golf Club held their first official presentation in the new Clubhouse on Saturday 1st November. The Clubhouse was built almost entirely by volunteers after the old Clubhouse was condemned by the Department of Defence and demolished. The new building is a great credit to the Club members who have worked hard with fundraising, grants and working bees to finish it.

Sheila Mills

FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month - November

The FoodWorks Sportsperson for November is Sheila Mills. Sheila Mills is a member of Canungra Area Golf Club. Back in the early nineties when Sheila was 70, with her health ailing and in her own words, ‘could hardly walk’, she decided to join her daughter Pam who was off to golf. Sheila had a hit and thought ‘I can do better than that!’ Consequently, she took up golf at the age of 70 and now at the age of 92 is a long time member of Canungra Area Golf Club. Sheila plays off a handicap of around 30 and is a joy and inspiration to all of the members at the Club. She turns up every Tuesday with her daughter to play in the Ladies Competition. Sheila regularly wins prizes in the competition and says she is just happy to be on the golf course enjoying her day out. She is also a very worthy member of the team when they represent the Club at other venues. Great for a laugh and chat, she has some wonderful stories to share as she has lived all her life in this region. It is wonderful to see Sheila out on the course, regularly playing with her sister Irene, 88. The pair of them consistently give the Club members a run for their money and they are the Club’s secret weapons when they are playing against other Clubs! As the November Sportsperson of the Month, Sheila receives a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. Page 36

Local Fighters Take Out Australian Titles By Rebecca Torrens

On the weekend of 25th and 26th October, the Hamma Muay thai team attended the Australian Titles in Tallebudgera, coming home with some awesome results. Five of the fighters from the local gym went down to take part in the event and not one came home without a medal. All

fighters were faced with tough competition and had to step up and fight their hardest. Each had an elimination round as well as the finals to contend with and backing up for a second day without time to recover from the first is a big feat. Josh Torrens made it through to his final fight and after an awkward take down in round number one where

he popped his shoulder out but still got back in there, fought through and brought home the gold. This the second consecutive year that Josh has won the Australian Championship for his age and weight division. Next up for his final round was Zak Tilley. Zak was faced with another strong opponent but he put all his hard

Sport Continued from page 38 training and dedication to work. He went toe to toe for all three rounds and also brought home the gold. Cameron Torrens made it through to his final round after winning a tough fight the day before, unfortunately this time he was faced with a fighter who was super strong in the grapple and although Cameron landed some very impressive kicks and elbows on his opponent the call didn’t go his way. However, he too came home with a silver medal. Samantha Torrens had a very close fight on the fist day of the final rounds with an opponent who had a large height advantage over her. She fought super strong and went with her for three rounds. This left Samantha without the win but a bronze medal to bring home. Also this year at the titles they had a senior division, which gave Azza Kocsmar the opportunity to put his training into practice. Azza fought a strong fight and had a win, leaving him also with a gold medal to bring home. Bringing home medals from the Australian Titles gives the team the opportunity to head to Thailand for the world titles in August next year. Between now and then they will continue to train two hours plus a day six days a week to prepare themselves. The day after the weekend of title fights all the fighters were back into the gym. Their next fights will be in front of a home crowd at the Canungra showgrounds on 15th November. Pop on down and show them your support - doors open at 3pm.

Community Award for Bren By David Baker Football Gold Coast held their 2014 Presentation night on 26th September and announced Bren Dalby as their Community Award winner. Bren was recognised for her tireless efforts for the Canungra community as the President of the Canungra Owls over many years, committee member of Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre and Wildcare volunteer among everything else she turns her hand to. I’m told Bren was thoroughly enjoying the hospitality on the night and was taken completely by surprise by the award. As the master of ceremonies detailed the accomplishments of the recipient prior to the announcement, Bren was glad that there was another “stupid bugger“ doing similar deeds in their community. It wasn’t

till the mention of her butter chicken that she twigged! Congratulations to Bren and all the volunteers in our small community . In many ways you are the lifeblood of a town like ours and the spirit shown lately by the Turning Canungra Pink campaign and the Community Bank project are an inspiration.
