Bronni Watson and Tori Batten have a seat on this fig tree which fell across Canungra Creek near the Coburg Road causeway on Dale Mahony’s farm on Friday 7th September. Dale said the tree had been damaged in the 2008 floods when debris from the floodwater banked up around the trunk, after which grubs got into it and weakened the trunk. High September winds were enough to bring the 40 year old tree down. “It’s a damn shame,” said Dale.

Sending Warmth Across the Sea

Local quilting group, Canungra Valley Circle of Friends, is extending Canungra’s community spirit to orphanages in Indonesia. Julie Binskin, who started the Circle of Friends soon after she moved to Canungra from Canberra, said the idea came from Canungra News’ Shane Stevenson who has lived and worked in Indonesia. The quilts will be given to children in two orphanages in Jakarta who range in age from 8 to 15 years. The orphanages have been supported by Shane and ex-colleagues for several years. “We have several women now who are involved in making quilts,” said Julie, “We call them community comfort quilts and have given them to people who are unwell, who have suffered the loss of a loved one, all sorts of reasons.” Shane said the quilts would be treasured by children who have very few possessions of their own. The Circle of Friends was recently involved in RimFest, a Canungra fundraising day for families in the area affected by cancer. Not only did they donate a quilt

as a raffle prize, they also made quilts for many people in the area who have cancer but were not recipents of RimFest funds. Group members include: Julie Binskin, Josephine Wilson, Depahne Lobie, Sylvia McKeown, Robyn Mahony, Carol Laurance, Linda Friend and Anne Muir. Julie said it is a pleasure to use their craft skills to make quilts for people in need, both within the community and around the world. “There is so much that you can do if you just look around,” said Julie.”

With something for everyone...

Last week we were lucky to have an enthusiastic, helpful student from the high school with us on work experience. Not only was she engaged and interested, she was also enquiring. At the end of the week she left with a new understanding of what travel agents do and it reminded me that unless you work in the industry you are not aware of what happens behind the scenes and what you the client receives by booking with an agency. Firstly you gain access to our knowledge. Collectively the team at Travelling Places has over 55 years of experience so we know a thing or two about travel and what to recommend. We know which airline or hotel is offering a good value proposition, who has the most comfortable seats and best service. We know which hotel to stay in and why or which river or ocean cruise will suit you as a person. We know to request that window seat, the room with a view, the portside cabin. We know which questions to ask you to make sure we help you design your dream trip. We recommend airlines/hotels/tours/cruises which suit your budget and that we know will be great for you as an individual. We don’t take a punt on the internet that what we are looking at is truthful - that the hotel in Auckland really is 5 star and only costs $100; that the reports on Tripadvisor aren’t corrupted by operators posting their own ‘recommendations’. We offer you tried and tested travel arrangements that we have either had personal experience of or have been recommended by a colleague in the industry that we trust. We help clients who have had to cancel their travel arrangements and have insurance claims. And if something changes while you are on your holiday it is great to know that there is someone at home to help sort everything out. Time is important and when you come to an experienced travel agency we save you time by designing and recommending travel suggestions. Some clients enjoy being intimately involved in their plans and others come to us with an idea and are happy for us to form their suggestions into a trip to fit their dreams. Come and speak to us – you may well be surprised.

Community Consultation for Local Planning Study

Council approved the draft Canungra Local Planning Study to allow for community consultation on the future growth of the area at it’s meeting on 25th September. Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Jennifer Sanders said the draft study proposed an overall vision for Canungra and its immediate surrounds. “The 20-year draft plan focuses on retaining Canungra’s vibrant village atmosphere while managing new growth and development in the area,” she said. “Maintaining the rural lifestyle and character of the village is important to residents and local businesses, and this has been highlighted in the study.” Key strategies to preserve the rural lifestyle of Canungra are outlined, including three possible scenarios to manage the expected future growth of the area from 700 to 3000 people. The six strategies are celebrating Canungra’s heritage and village lifestyle, improving the main street, supporting local businesses and jobs, providing housing options suitable to a village lifestyle, walkways to link the area’s main attractions and

managing future growth. Cr Sanders said community consultation on the draft document is expected to commence towards the end of the year. “The consultation process is an essential step in the development of this plan for Canungra’s future, and Council is keen to hear the community’s thoughts on the draft document,” Cr Sanders said. Division 3 Councillor, Virginia West said the draft Canungra Local Planning Study proposes a vision for the future of Canungra and its immediate surrounds and will guide future development decisions for the area. “For this reason it is vital for the community to have its say on the draft document, which will be available for the public to view and make comment on in the coming months,” said Virginia. “Council is currently organising for community consultation to occur towards the end of the year which will include a series of public information sessions – I look forward to hearing everyone’s feedback when the consultation period commences.”

COUNCIL OPENS DOOR TO LIONS DEN Council has green lighted plans by the Tamborine Village Lions Club to establish a new clubhouse. The clubhouse is to be established adjacent to the Tamborine Memorial Hall, with Council granting a five-year lease over a parcel of land at the complex to house a building which will be relocated to the site. Tamborine Village Lions Club was established in July 2010 and currently has a membership of 34. It currently uses the Tamborine Memorial Hall as a meeting venue, however the hall is well patronised and is exceeding capacity in terms of meeting and storage availability. The new clubhouse will be available for other community groups who require a meeting

Obituary John Edward Suthers (Junior)

Gift of Vision to People in Need

29th May 1936 - 3 September 2012 John Edward Suthers (Junior), was born on 29th May 1936, at Alburn Hospital, to Elsie and Edward Suthers. He was the eldest of five children, his brothers David and Stephen and sisters Margaret and Kerry. The family was raised in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. He worked for a dry cleaner, pressing clothes at 16 years. At 16 ½ he worked as a porter on the railways, and at 17 he joined the Army. He met Beryl McKay in 1952 at Manly and it was love at first sight. After four years of courtship, they wed on 13th December 1958. Gary, their son, was born in 1959. They lived in the Blue Mountains for two years before Johnny was posted to Queensland. The family moved around quite a bit as Army families do, but finally they were posted to Canungra in 1989, for John’s retirement. Johnny joined the Canungra RSL the same year. He served as Treasurer for many years at the RSL and he also used to cook up a mean curry to feed the hungry hordes that came in. Johnny had four grandchildren: Elliot, Emily, Daniel and Sherrie. John was seen nearly every morning walking his beloved Pomeranian “Brutus”. “Brutus” loved going for rides in the car with Johnny. Two years ago Junior’s health deteriorated and he was admitted to Wongaburrra Nursing Home at Beaudesert. For the first few months he used to ask visitors to help him escape from jail, but he soon settled in with a television and his favourite chair. Johnny was taken to Allamanda Hospital on Monday 27th August. Over the next week his health rapidly declined and on Monday 3rd September Johnny passed away. Nicky Carr, of Tamborine Mountain Optometrists, is joining the World Sight Day Challenge during October to help give the gift of vision to people in developing countries and underserved communities. World Sight Day is 11th October, but Tamborine Mountain Optometrists will donate all their repair fees during October, as well as run a lolly guessing competition to help over 600 million people who are blind or vision impaired because they do not have access to eye exams or glasses. “I have supported Optometry Giving Sight for five years and am proud to donate to such a worthwhile cause,” said Nicky. “The World Sight Day Challenge is a great way to help support the millions of people who don’t have access to the basic eye care that we can take for granted.” Nicky was inspired by stories like that of Loid Semente (right), who is training to become an optometrist with the Mozambique Eyecare Project, supported by Optometry Giving Sight. Loid will be one of the first optometrists in her country. She is passionate about optometry because of the significant impact it can have for the people of Mozambique. “Sight is empowering. For some, access to eye care is the first step towards getting an education, or providing for your family,” she said. Children are especially vulnerable. Providing vision correction to a school-age child can literally transform their entire life. Just $5 can provide an eye examination and a pair of glasses for someone in a developing country. Nicky is also inviting her patients to make a donation at her practice throughout October. Optometry Giving Sight guarantees 85 percent of all funds raised by optometrists and their patients go directly to supporting programs that give sight to those most in need. Funds raised from World Sight Day Challenge will be directed to projects in 35 projects across 23 countries around the world. For more information about Optometry Giving Sight and the World Sight Day Challenge, visit www.givingsight.org.

Patinack Farm Shocked by Manager’s Death

Patinack Farm was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of it’s Queensland Stud Manager, Greg Atkins on Friday 21st September. Greg was at Patinack’s Canungra property attending to a mare with colic when it kicked out, striking him in the chest. Patinack Farm’s Racing Secretary Adam Bull said, “Greg was a pleasure to be around, his knowledge in the field was impeccable and you always came away more knowledgeable and excited”. Patinack’s newsletter stated that Greg was instrumental in building the operation at Canungra, he was a tireless worker and an extremely able stud manager, who will be sorely missed by all at Patinack Farm. Tributes have been received for a man

Greg Atkins

who was a true champion. Greg leaves behind his wife, Debbie, and three children Chris, Amy and Matt. Greg’s funeral was held at Scone Racecourse on Wednesday 3rd October.

The Race that Stops the Nation Placing Your Bets on Cup Day The 2012 Melbourne Cup will take place on Tuesday 6th November 2012 at Flemington Racecourse at 2:00pm (Queensland time). At the time of printing, there were 151 of the world’s best stayers vying for a place in the 2012 Melbourne Cup. The list of trainers is a who’s who of Australian racing - David Hayes, Anthony Cummings, Gerald Ryan, Anthony Freedman, Gai Waterhouse and of course the ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings all have potential runners in the final field of 24. The final field, barrier draw and jockeys will be announced on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday 3rd November 2012. It is a good idea to place your bets early on Cup day if you are going into

Enjoying the Cup Locally

a TAB as it will get busy once racing starts. Remember with daylight saving in the Southern states, races can begin early. The simpliest bets to place on Cup day are: • Win – The most basic type of bet. Put your money on the horse you think will win the Cup. • Place – Pick a horse that you think will finish in the top three. Not as lucrative odds as a win bet. • Each-way – Put equal amounts on a horse for the win and a place, the equivalent of two bets. Stories abound of people picking the Cup winner year after year, or of winning a fortune in a trifecta on the Cup. One of my favourite stories is of a lady in Canberra who put a trifecta on, not realising she had given the TAB attendant the barrier numbers, not the horse numbers. The trifecta that year paid $24,000 and she won because she had bet on the wrong horses! Anything can happen in racing nothing is truer than the old joke: How do you make a small fortune out of racing? Start with a large fortune...

There is no need to travel far to enjoy Cup Day in style - we have several venues in our area which are (for some) even within walking distance! The Canungra Hotel is offering a huge buffet lunch (including seafood) with a complimentary glass of sparkling on arrival. They will have the race on the many television screens throughout the Hotel and have the added advantage of the TAB on site, which is open from 8am on Cup Day. For lunch bookings phone 5543 5233. The Canungra RSL Services Club is also hosting a Cup Day lunch. The race will be screened on two big screen television sets and there will be lucky door prizes, sweeps, raffles and a prize for best hat. The special Cup lunch includes a glass of sparkling on arrival. For bookings phone Sarah on 5543 5524. For those who wish to venture further afield, the Beaudesert RSL Services Club in William Street, Beaudesert, always does a great Cup day lunch. With TAB on site and a Summer Fashion Parade by Beaudesert’s Dolly’s Boutique, this is a great venue to capture the atmosphere of the Cup. For bookings phone 5541 1810. Before you go, plan how you will get home. Most people want to have a drink or two on Cup day, but there isn’t much in the way of public transport in the Scenic Rim so think about how you will get to and from your venue - and ladies, that may well mean a spare pair of comfy shoes in your handbag!

Melbourne Cup Day 2012 Cup Day Fashion Tips for Women and Men Other fashion tips for the ladies: • Use colour blocking. This can involve wearing one colour from head to toe, or utilising two contrasting colours. • Try white garments with bright accessories. • Opt for lace trims and accessories. • Adopt a 40s vintage style. • Small hats rather than wide brimmed. Pay attention to the dress code of the day, such as black and white for Derby Day and brighter colours for Oaks Day. This spring give your feet a rest by swapping the high heels for kitten heels. They are feminine and classic, as well as comfortable.

Fashion is an integral part of Melbourne Cup Day. No matter where you live or how you celebrate the Cup, how you dress on the day says it all. You can be sure that the competition on the track will be matched when it comes to the Melbourne Cup fashion stakes in 2012. Both men and women will want to look their best on Cup Day, so here are a few tips to guide you when choosing your Cup Day outfit for 2012: Women’s Race Wear The big color trend for 2012 spring/ summer is mint green. The racks will be full of fashions all done up in a soft whimsical version of mint green. You could say this is the ‘coral’ of 2012. Make-up that suits a mint green outfit can be tricky. Stick to soft pastels that won’t be overpowering. Another color trend you will see this spring, especially in handbags and shoes is neon’s - think bright blues, yellows, greens, oranges, and hot pinks. The color that jumps out at the head of the line when it comes to neon shades, is orange! Let’s face it there is no other color that can make a loud fashion statement as

Mint green is the hot colour for Spring 2012 everyone’s wearing it!

bright orange. So need a new handbag or a great pair of shoes? Make it orange.

Men’s Race Wear People often think fashion is women’s business during the Melbourne Cup, but there is no reason why the guys can’t look just as stylish. Here are some quick tips on how to go about it: • Pastel coloured shirts. • Grey rather than the traditional black suits. • Make sure the lapel flower matches the flower of the day. For Everyone... Arrive sober, drink sensibly, wager only what you can afford, and have a great day out!

From My Window...

Sport, sport, sport. We’ve had so much sporting news come through this month! The Canungra Hang Gliding Classic drew competitors from around Australia to the town. The major paragliding event for the area, the Canungra Cup, will be held at the end of the month. Shane Stevenson should be congratulated on organising the inaugural Canungra Chamber of Commerce Invitational Golf Day. This was a great initiative of Shane’s and although I only spent an hour or so in the drinks cart (with Monique Morcus), I have to say it was a great day out. In the short time Shane has been here he has been very active in the community and was instrumental in the establishment of the Canungra Chamber of Commerce. We also had sucess in soccer with three local boys in the Musgrave Mustangs team which won the Gold Coast U12 Premiership and the mighty Canungra Owls took out the Under 12 Division 4 Premiership. The Canungra Bowls Club recently completed another of their very successful Business and Community Shields. This has been a great initiative of the Club and makes for a good social night out. We are fortunate to have so many sporting opportunities in our small town. Have a great month everyone, and in the words of the great HG Nelson and Rampaging Roy Slaven - Too much sport is barely enough!

Letters to the Editor

Defence Pensions Dear Editor, Defence servicemen and women were used as pawns during a recent sitting of parliament for a disgraceful display of political party games, over the very serious issue of pensions and other entitlements for those who defend our nation. The Opposition wanted us to halt the progress of the Veterans Affairs Legislation Amendment Bill, which streamlines and improves the entitlement process for veterans. They called for an eleventh-hour delay to this legislation until indexed military superannuation pensions were introduced. This move was a slap in the face to every service man and woman in Australia. These people have risked death defending the things we believe in. Many have endured family breakdowns after their long periods of absence. These people should get the best deal of all, but they are not. They are getting a secondrate deal at the present moment. We strongly support fairer indexing of their pensions, but we will not be party to delaying other important improvements in veteran entitlements. And after 13 years in government without action on military pensions, such a tactic can only be viewed as political point scoring to the detriment of those who deserve so much more. Make no mistake, we will continue to fight tenaciously for the fair indexation of veterans’ pensions – without the petty politics and party games. To this end, following close consultation with defence associations, the KAP has introduced legislation for military pensions to be indexed in the same way other Australian pensions are calculated – under the Social Security Act – effective immediately upon retirement (not at 55 years of age as proposed by the LNP). We remain optimistic that the Opposition will stay true to their word to support fair indexation and stop playing political games. Sincerely yours, Hon Bob Katter MP, Katter’s Australian Party Federal Member for Kennedy Letters

Local artists of all genres are being invited to apply to participate in Studios of the Scenic Rim 2013 with applications closing 21st October, 2012. Application forms can be found on www.liveatthecentre.com.au. The popular event is a celebration of Scenic Rim’s Debbie Oberhardt and creative industries and has Tamlyn Geiger become one of the region’s most successful cultural tourism initiatives since its inception in 2008. Participation is not limited to visual artists, with musicians, writers, film makers and performers encouraged to apply. Applications are assessed by a panel of peers from the creative industry, tourism and education sector in three separate categories. Artists residing within the Scenic Rim can apply to open their own studio as an individual artist, join other artists as a collective or exhibit or perform their work at a different location as an artist-in-residence. Applications from wineries, café’s and galleries wishing to host artists from outside the region have been received in the past, and will be considered again in 2013. Studios of the Scenic Rim gives the public the opportunity to get an insight into the working life of the region’s artists, who are often inspired by the natural beauty of this area and the warmth of the communities in which they live and work. CT’s Movie Review - The Way

By Keer Moriarty Available on DVD. Rated PG. Emilio Estevez’ inspirational film, The Way, is a powerful story about family, friends, and the challenges we face while navigating life. Estevez wrote and directed the film and his father, Martin Sheen, plays the lead role. Tom is an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. On the spur of the moment, Tom decides to make the pilgrimage himself to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey. He discovers the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.” The characters and spectacular scenery ensure this film captivates. Although the pace may be a little slow for some, it allows you to really savour the journey. Almost makes me want to join our intrepid local personal trainer, Steve Crook, who is organising a trip to walk part of The Way next year. Buen Camino!

Woolworths Earn and Learn and Coles Sports for Schools Thank you for your support for the above programs. We had a great response. We finished the counting for the Woolworths Earn and Learn and tripled the amount of points we collected last year. We are still in the process of counting the Coles Vouchers. I would like to thank all students and their families for their help. A special thank you to extended family members who asked friends to collect for us, including some from interstate.

Thank You Canungra School

I would like to personally thank all past and present students, staff and family for all the support I have received in my time at Canungra State School. I am currently on six months leave from the Education Department to follow a different career path working in the mines, which I may extend to longer than six months if it works out. This was a very difficult decision to leave Canungra State School and I will miss you all so much. I have been proud to be the School’s Officer at Canungra and loved working with the staff and amazing students and families. Thanks again and I hope to see you around in the future. Ms P (Wendy)

Year 5 Camp to Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre Year 5 Camp was great. We got to hang out with our friends at meal time and in our activity groups, and play volleyball on the volleyball courts in the afternoons which was really fun . I liked it when we went to see the glow worms because even though they weren’t as bright as they could be they looked spectacular. (Heather Moriarty 5/6B) On the 10th of September Grade 5 went to Numinbah Valley Camp. There were lots of activities including a blindfold trail, canoeing, dancing and much more. At night we went on a bush walk to see glow worms - they were amazing. The cabins were really comfortable. They were all named after wildlife such as Spangled Drongos, King Parrot, Tawny Frogmouth and Blue Wrens just to name a few. Everyone had fun, can’t wait till next year’s camp. (Hannah Gill 5A)

Life is moving towards harmony, even if you can’t see it in this moment. The best way to ease friction is to get practical. Look at what people are complaining about, consider whether their criticism has any merit - and if it does, make the requisite appropriate changes.

The hunt is for truth. You may have mistaken the quarry to be the exotic, the distant and the different. Jupiter is filling you up with the kind of energy that could lead to grandiosity if you let it. Don’t let it. Stay on track. The journey to take is towards finding significance.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

Venus leaves. She brought delight – but she also stirred up a bit of a hornets next. To listen to the voice inside that suggests going for delight, puts the noses of those other voices that would prefer you reinvest in misery, out of joint. Make what serves your soul best, a high priority. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) Though the journey is towards directness and honesty, you must traverse a swamp of emotional intensity to get there. This swamp is made more of your own fears than others reactions. If life makes you feel, figure out how all these feelings are subtly serving you.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Balance is a work in progress. Every time you get it, life throws a bigger imbalance your way, to help you take it up a notch. A tight-rope walker doesn’t stop when they find equilibrium. They enjoy the moment – and keep on walking. Enjoy the little wins, without attachment.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

It’s only a matter of time before adventure comes your way. You can see that superficial solutions aren’t going to cut the mustard. Genuine solutions are only going to arise through facing the facts. And the facts are that there are feelings under the surface that aren’t being faced.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Mars is driving you. Mars is will. Mars is determination. At his very best, Mars is an elegant statement of power made in the cause of peace. Learn all the colours of Mars. There are many. There is a constructed version of masculine energy and there is a real one. Get real.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Come home to the things you have been turning away from. If you do it willingly, life won’t have to drag you kicking. Fears very rarely match reality. One good, brave look at reality and all those fears will crumble away. Love isn’t about to shackle you. Let it all the way in.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Uranus may have been driving you to work yourself too hard. If that is the case, you will have to come back to centre and figure out the wisdom of your organism. The moment you hear the hum of health in your body, so your intuition will tell you where to go. Check in.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

As you get good at what you do, so you discover more of who you are. The whole of existence can be a mystery school, if you want it to be. Work isn’t just work, it’s a way to get to know who you are. The universe is asking you to individuate – to be more of who you are. © M.J.Dean 2012 The Canungra Times, October 2012

Canungra Pony Club News

By Katrina Morrow It’s been an incredibly busy couple of months for the members of Canungra Pony Club. In recent months we have welcomed some new families to the Club, giving it more variety in the age groups. We now have riders from four to forty years of age attending. It’s always great to see everyone having a go and enjoying themselves. Being that the start of the year was so wet, most events were being cancelled and pushed further into the year. This has resulted in many events running into the Agricultural Show season. Throughout August and September our members have been competing virtually every weekend, with some outstanding results. We congratulate our youngest member, Brook Croft, for achieving two first place ribbons at his first show. Kaylee Behrendorff competed at her first Gymkhana at Jimboomba in September and did extremely well, bringing home a total of eight ribbons. Our more experienced members, Jess Tyrer, Tori Tyrer, Krystal Behrendorff and Justin Morrow-Cleary have done us very proud, with every one of them bringing home high point rider trophies for their age groups at all the gymkhanas they attended.

One of our younger members, 10 year old Justin Morrow-Cleary, will be representing us and Zone 2 at the Queensland State Pony Club Championships held in Warwick. There will be approximately 500 riders from all over Queensland, NT and NSW competing for the three days. We wish him all the very best of luck and hope he enjoys the experience. No doubt there will be some stories to tell on his return. It has been many years since Canungra Pony Club has had one of its members achieve state level. If you’re interested in becoming a member of pony club please phone 0400 436 867 or email us at canungraponyclub@ gmail.com Safe riding everyone.

Nature’s Gems

Eastern Water Skink (Eulamprus quoyii) By Melissa Whitby

Recently, I took the opportunity to take a few days off and head out to the Granite Belt to visit one of my favourite places, Girraween National Park. September is a great time to visit Girraween as it is alive with blooming wildflowers and breeding birds. However, another of its local inhabitants, the Eastern Water Skink, also caught my eye. This beautiful skink inhabits many aquatic freshwater environments with suitable cover in South-east Queensland. Its overall range extends throughout eastern Australia. Throughout my travels in South-East Queensland, I have observed this skink in wild places such as Springbrook and Lamington National Parks. However, they have adapted well to urban environments and can also be seen in areas around Brisbane. The Eastern Water Skink is easily identified by its size and distinctive markings. The most distinctive marking of this skink is the golden line, which extends from the eye to the base of the tail. It also has black upper sides, which are covered with white spots. This skink has a head and body length of 11 – 12 centimetres. Much of their time is taken up foraging in pursuits of their main food source, insects. The skink in the photo provided with this article was amazing to watch. Its ability to swim quickly and climb slippery rocks was astounding. I have found over the time when observing the Eastern Water Skink, it is best to move slowly. If they are not alarmed overly, the will sit sufficiently for an observer to take note of their amazing markings. The Eastern Water Skink is a

species that is common throughout its range and an observer with some patience should be able to find it. It is that time of year where I have been noticing many reptiles on the move with the warm weather. I ask everyone who drives a vehicle to please slow down if you see reptiles on the road to give the animals a chance to move off. Some may even require a helping hand if the situation is safe for the rescuer and the animal concerned. For any reptiles found injured, please contact Wildcare on (07) 5527 2444. For those interested in seeing an Eastern Water Skink, I wish you all the best in your pursuit for this exquisite reptile.

of

On 18th September 2012, ASIC released a report titled ‘Review of Early Termination Fees for Residential Loans entered into before 1st July 2011’. From that date, early termination fees have been prohibited on new Code regulated loans secured by residential property. However, many residential loans entered into before 1st July 2011 include a fee styled either ‘early termination fee’ or ‘deferred establishment fee’ (both called ‘exit fees’). Exit fees can still be imposed in loans regulated by the National Credit Code (NCC) which are not secured over residential property. However, exit fees for both regulated loans (regardless of whether the loan is secured by residential property or not) as well as exit fees for unregulated loans may still fall for review as unjust or unconscionable under other legislation. ASIC’s comments will also be relevant to those types of exit fees.

Deferred Establishment Fees (DEFs) were preferred to early termination fees (ETFs) by many lenders because the NCC provides that early termination fees may be found unconscionable if they exceed ‘a reasonable estimate of the credit provider’s (bank’s) reasonable loss...and costs’ whereas cost is only an element the court ‘is to have regard to’ when reviewing establishment fees. The report found that where an exit fee has been charged since 1st July 2010 the exit fee resulted in a complaint to lenders (banks) in less than 1% of cases. However, more than half of those complaints resulted in the exit fee being waived or reduced. If you feel you have been charged either a deferred establishment fee or an early termination fee which was, in your opinion, either unjust or unconscionable – please be aware, you do have the right to lodge a formal complaint with your lender/ bank.

Canungra Lionhearts Prevail in Grand Final

Canungra Owls U12 Premiership team

Congratulations to coach Matt Boland who has had the majority of the team for a number of years now and has remained unbeaten for three years. This is an amazing record. Thank you to Rachel Aiken for managing the team and the parents of the players for supporting their children. Further congratulations to Josh Aiken who has graduated from the Under 11 Next Step Program conducted by Football Gold Coast to join 34 other players to vie for selection in the Under 12 Gold Coast representative side for next season. The Grand Finals were also successful for Canungra local, Scott Dalby who was a key player in the victorious Robina Under 15 Junior Premier League side winning 5-0 against Runaway Bay. Local boys Regan Lowry, Josh Baker and Brent Wilson played in the Musgrave Under 12 Junior Premier League premiership side winning 3-2 over Gold Coast Knights.

Trophy presentations will take place at 9am on 27th October in conjunction with a Family Fun Day conducted by Canungra State School. This will provide a full stop to a great season for the Canungra Owls in which player numbers exceeded 100 and a premiership was won. Special thanks to Bren and George Dalby and Bec Bell-McNee for their tireless efforts for the club and the many other parents that have coached, managed and volunteered for all the jobs that need to be done so our children can take part in a wonderful community sporting club.

By David Baker Canungra Owls Under 12’s played Mt Tamborine Eagles for the Division 4 premiership on 16th September. After winning the minor premiership convincingly they were hot favourites to take out the Grand Final and they did not disappoint the assembled throng of parents and Canungra locals who came to support the boys and girls. The final score was 3 - 0 but the Canungra Owls had to fight hard to prevail over the tenacious Eagles. Ben Aylward was gallant in goal, saving a penalty shot from the spot to keep a clean sheet for the game. Nathan Williams was awarded man of the match which is a great effort as he is at least a year younger than many of his opponents. Taliesha Irvine was a rock in the midfield and kept on going bravely after taking a blow to the chest. Thomas Sheppard was cool on the ball under pressure. Josh Aiken was everywhere in the midfield with superior pace while Callum Mann, Tommas Skerke and Mitchell Tomlinson were dangerous in attack and ably supported by Molly Thorogood, Kaileb McConnell, Rama Coppolaro, Emily Hill and Dyllan McPhail. “General” Jasp Leach was unpassable at the back and Jasper Boland backed him up when needed.
