Canungra Gets Pretty In Pink To Take On Women’s Cancers

The Canungra community and Breeze FM are painting the town pink for the month of October in support of Cancer Council’s national Pink Ribbon Day (Monday 27th October). Cafe Metz owner, Di Crooks started turning her cafe pink for October four years ago and is happy that the Canungra Chamber of Commerce and Breeze FM have joined her this year. Ron Hailes of Breeze FM said the Breeze always turns pink for October and they thought how fantastic it would be if they could turn a whole town pink. “The community has been so supportive – everyone has come on board in some way, by selling raffle tickets and Pink merchandise to turning their shop fronts pink. “We’ve got some fantastic prizes on offer and The Breeze team will be hosting a heap of Pink events throughout the month – we encourage everyone to get involved and help us work towards Cancer Council Queensland’s mission for a cancer free future.” Cancer Council Queensland Regional Fundraising Coordinator Lyn Mitchell said Pink fundraising

events supported the more than 3900 Queensland women who will be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer this year. “A bright splash of pink does more than brighten up the community – it means we are taking steps to beat women’s cancers and show our support for those women in our life who have been affected by the disease,” Ms Mitchell said. “This year we have so many incredible ways in which the community can get involved and we commend the Canungra community and The Breeze for jumping on board.” Many Canungra businesses are supporting the event by offering donations from purchases, displaying information about cancer and Red Door Studio is doing a ‘Pink Art Walk’ with colouring pages available from Canungra Newsagency. Breeze FM is also running a raffle which was displayed at Canungra Markets and will be drawn at the Markets on Sunday 26th October. Tickets are available at Cafe Metz, Canungra Newsagency, The Outpost Cafe, Funky Dory Diner and My Country Escape.

And They’re Off - The Long Ride Begins for Mens Cancers

By Mel Parker

A small team from Kokoda Barracks, Canungra, packed their bags and bikes on Sunday 28th September to head off on “The Long Ride”, a charity motorcycle trek raising money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The team will cover over 7000km during their journey, which the Canungra community and Kokoda Barracks have rallied around in support, raising over $3000 for the cause. Major Nichola Doxford, who is heading up the Kokoda Barracks Team, is more than pleased with the fundraising result. “The Long Ride is not just about raising money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, but also to raise awareness of men’s health issues,” she said. “We all have men in our lives - dads, brothers, husbands and sons, and it’s so important that we break down the barriers, misconceptions and stigmas that are associated with all men’s health

Of particular interest is the location of any historical parts of trams and train in the area. The RSL’s Courtesy Bus is available to bring people to and from the meeting. Kennel And Cattery Approval

A development proposal for a boutique style combined bed and breakfast with a dog kennel and cattery at Tamborine has been approved by Council. The ‘high end’ facility to be built on Beaudesert Beenleigh Road will cater for up to 10 dogs and 15 cats with short-term accommodation for guests adjacent to the animal facility. Planning and Development Committee chair Cr Jennifer Sanders said the animal and tourist accommodation facility reflects the changing demands of the tourism industry. “The Scenic Rim is a wonderful region for families to visit and explore the natural landscapes, and there is increasing demand for pets to be included in family getaways,” Cr Sanders said.

An elderly woman was airlifted by the RACQ CareFlight Rescue after a single vehicle crash near Canungra on 23rd September 2014. The car left Beaudesert Road on the approach to Canungra and struck a tree, injuring the woman and an elderly man. The Gold Coast RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to respond just before 4pm. Both patients were transported by QAS ambulance to Moriarty Park to meet the rescue helicopter. The woman had suspected chest injuries and has been flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition. The male patient was being transported by QAS to hospital. RACQ CareFlight Rescue is urging people to take extra care on the roads.

Community Bank Closer as Pledges Reach $500,000

The Community Bank project reached another milestone on Monday 29th September when the pledges to buy shares tipped the $500,000 mark. Steering Committee Chair, Janine Rockliff said, “As we celebrated the first 12 months of the campaign with an information update night on Wednesday 17th September, the feedback from the attendees, Bendigo Bank staff and the Steering Committee was very positive.” “The Canungra & District Community Bank Project Steering Committee is proud to announce that the pledges to buy shares has now surpassed $500,000.” Steering Committee has a target set of $750,000 in pledges to buy shares to fund the establishment of the community bank. Money for the shares is not required until

the prospectus is released after the total has been reached. The bank will then be owned by local shareholders with the banking licence held by Bendigo Bank. “We would like to thank everyone who has registered their interest to date and with two thirds of the total needed now pledged,” Janine said. “If you are thinking of purchasing shares in the Canungra & District Community Bank, please return your pledge form as soon as possible.” A pledge form is included on page 20 of this edition of The Canungra Times. Increase in Services at Canungra Valley Medical

Patients now have the opportunity to receive mental health counselling for conditions such as PTSD, anxiety and depression at Canungra Valley Medical with Dr David Christiansen. David’s interest in psychiatric medicine led him to study this area over the last few years and he is allocating Wednesday afternoons for counselling services, with a view to extending this service if the need is there. The counselling sessions will be longer than a normal

Dr Paul Hamilton

GP appointment, requiring a 45 minute appointment. David said he will use a range of treatments for his counselling clients, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. To be referred to the service, patients need to be referred by another doctor, who will complete a mental health plan. This will require a longer appointment and can be done by of the doctors from Canungra Valley Medical. David will still be seeing medical patients on Mondays, Wednesday mornings, Thursdays, Saturdays and alternate Fridays. Dr Andrew Rees remains full time at the practice, while new doctors Dr Paul Hamilton and Dr Duncan Pettigrew have been seeing patients for the last few months on a regular basis. Paul is a Registrar who is looking forward to extending his experience at Canungra. Duncan has been brought in to support David on Wednesday afternoons. Practice Nurse, Bronwyn Brown is now fully qualified in a range of women’s health services, including the provision of pap smears and general women’s

health checks. Patients can book these procedures through the practice. The practice recently introduced mixed billing, however bulk billing is still provided to pensioners and health care card holders. The management and staff at the practice have implemented these changes to provide patients with a greater range of treatment options in town. For appointments please phone Canungra Valley Medical on 5543 5688.

Increased Weight Gain in Weaners Using a Combination of Treatments Jim Viner, Gympie, QLD Running a Brahman cross herd in SE QLD comes with its challenges – particularly cattle tick. So to take a fresh look at the options available for his weaner steer operation, Jim recently conducted a trial to compare treatment options.

Cydectin® Long Acting Injection for Cattle, Cydectin Injection and Dectomax® Injection were compared on 9 month old cross bred female weaners with an average starting weight of 217kg. The trial results showed the difference highly potent and persistent products can offer over others in practical situations. In particular, treatment with Cydectin Long Acting Injection for Cattle (LA) generated an additional 10.1kg (42%) increase in weight gain over Dectomax Injection. Cydectin Injection also generated

an additional 3.8kg increase over Dectomax Injection during the 120 day trial period. “We started using the LA on the weaners in the trial, and now use it on everything we can – we have seen such great results with increase in production and condition of our cattle, the extra 10kg gain on the weaners is money in the bank.” Multimin® is also given at same time as the LA to all our cattle – the products work well together and the proof is in the sappy calves and well covered heifers, our breeders have never looked better”.

“The condition of the cows and calves is outstanding with this combination.” Since implementing LA & Multimin on the back of the trial results there is no way we will stop using these products – they give the results we are looking for.

Top Tibetan Lama Helps Scenic Rim People Discover The Real Purpose Of Life

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Going Pink in October ... With so much negativity in the news at the moment, it is fantastic to see our little town doing something positive for a great cause. This October, Canungra is ‘Turning Pink’ to raise funds and awareness for Cancer. This is something the amazing Di Crooks from Cafe Metz has done for several years and this year Breeze FM has lept on board, as well as the Canungra Chamber of Commerce. Many of the businesses and community organisations are contributing in different ways, from a movie night at the pool to cancer awareness day at Funky Dory and of course Cafe Metz is hosting a ‘Get the Girls Out’ Dinner on 31st October. Everyone involved in any way is to be congratulated on giving their time and energy to this great cause. I don’t think there would be anyone in our community who hasn’t been affected in some way by this disease which takes too many of our loved ones, way too young. It is easy to feel helpless in the face of this illness but by supporting these events in October you will be making a difference. Funds raised will go to the Cancer Council to help in the fight against cancer. Many thanks to the Canungra Chamber of Commerce, Di Crooks and the staff at Cafe Metz and to Breeze FM for making this possible.

A senior Tibetan lama will enlighten the people of the Scenic Rim about how to realise the true purpose of their lives. His Eminence the 7th Dzogchen Rinpoche says many people are rightly searching for meaning in their lives but looking in all the wrong places and the happiness they seek escapes them. Dzogchen Rinpoche will be in Maroochydore on 17th October, to give a public talk entitled What is the Real Purpose of your Life? at 7pm. The talk will be followed by a weekend teaching on How To Truly Follow Your Heart on 18th October at the same venue and a five-day retreat entitled Rest In The Heart of the Guru from 19th - 24th October at Springbrook. These events are part of a worldwide tour consisting of public talks, empowerments and teachings and residential retreats in most countries. His Eminence says: “Searching for happiness we buy in to the idea of a perfect life – a good job, a nice house, the fairy tale romance. “Over many years we work hard to build this lifestyle but in reality the stress of maintaining it can leave us feeling exhausted and dissatisfied. “Confused that this has not brought the long-term contentment we had hoped for, we can find ourselves lacking direction and questioning the true meaning of our life. “Instead we can draw on ancient Buddhist wisdom to practice a profound yet simple method which will help us realise the deeper purpose of our lives so we can experience effortless peace and lasting fulfilment.” Dzogchen Rinpoche, one of the highest lamas in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, is the authentic Dzogchen lineage holder and head of Dzogchen Monastery in South India with more than 280 branch monasteries in Asia mainly in Tibet, India, Nepal and Bhutan and in the West. Orchid Show

Dear Keer, Once more I write on behalf of Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society expressing my most sincere thanks to you for the promotion you gave in the Canungra Times to our recent Spring Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants. Once more it was a complete success with 597 passing through the door over the weekend to enjoy what was probably the best Spring Show that our Society has ever presented. There were over 350 plants on display, the majority of them being orchids at their resplendent best. Once more, Canungra residents gave us great support by turning up in large numbers so we are continually grateful for their attendance. However, there were many who visited from places far removed

who got the opportunity to visit this wonderful little town. The Giant Garden Hamper raffle was won by: • First Prize: Richard of Varsity Lakes. • Second Prize: Kev of Cedar Vale. • Third Prize: Esme of Beaudesert. Lucky Door Prizes were won by: • $50.00 Bunnings Voucher: Vera of Tamborine. • Yates gardening Guide: Evelyn of Algester. All prizes have been collected or delivered. We are greatly appreciative of your promotion and the support of the local people and trust that it will continue. Kindest regards to all. Metabolism Tricks

An easy way to lose weight and feel energised is to increase the body’s metabolism - here are 10 simple tricks: • Eating a nutrient-rich breakfast wakes up your metabolism. Rolled oats porridge with almonds and berries, or spinach-and-feta omelette with whole-grain toast will get the engine going. • Eating every three to four hours keeps your metabolism cranking, so you burn more calories throughout the day. Small meals help you curb hunger, eat fewer calories overall, and keep your metabolism running. Try five to six small meals a day. • High-intensity exercise causes a bigger rise in metabolic rate than lower intensity workouts, resulting in an increase in metabolism even after you’ve finished exercising. • Avoid trans fats - or partially hydrogenated fats/oils - they bind to fat and liver cells, slow metabolism and slow your body’s ability to burn fat. • Eat more protein from lean beef, turkey, fish, chicken, tofu, nuts, beans, eggs, and low-fat dairy products. Metabolism is raised during digestion, and since protein is digested slower than fat or carbs, your metabolism is raised for longer. • Build lean muscle - the body uses more calories a day to sustain it. The resting metabolic rate is much higher in people with more muscle. • Avoid crash diets - too few calories triggers your body to conserve energy and lower its metabolism. • Avoid toxins - artificial additives, and eating nonorganic produce, can interfere with your thyroid, the body’s regulator of metabolism. • Ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and cayenne contain natural metabolism-boosting chemicals, and drinking green tea or oolong tea offers the combined benefits of caffeine and catechins, substances shown to rev up the metabolism for a couple of hours. • Drink plenty of water since even mild dehydration can cause your metabolism to slow down. You can help your body to help itself!

Over weight or Unfit?

Directed By: Wes Ball. Starring: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter.

Based on the best-selling novel by James Dashner, The Maze Runner is an exciting, actionpacked film about a boy who wakes up in a creaky elavator full of emergency supplies without a clue who he is or how he got there. When the elevator stops, the boy finds himself in the middle of a gigantic maze that closes up each night, trapping whoever is unfortunate enough to be in there with a bunch of mechanical monsters. In the centre of the maze is a clearing, where 60 teenage boys have made camp and, as their leader Alby explains, a new boy comes up the elevator shaft each month with no idea who they are, although they remember their name in a day or two. But Thomas isn’t like the others. He is curious, determined to discover how the maze works and why he

of all people was put in there. But above all, after a few days Thomas starts remembering and having visions of his life outside the maze. When the first girl appears in the elevator, the blame falls to Thomas, the only boy who can remember glimpses of his past. And when the maze starts malfunctioning, sending monsters into the cleaning during the night, Thomas alone is faced with the challenge of finding a way out. Will he be the first ever to survive the maze? The film The Maze Runner was an excelelnt movie though slightly off the mark when it came to the chronological order of the book. It was easy to understand by people who hadn’t read the novel and received a pleasing response to people who had.

Chemicals in Your Skincare Do you know what’s in your skincare? If I told you it takes a mere 26 seconds for the chemicals in your skincare to enter your bloodstream, would you be horrified? Fascinated? Both? In the world today, there are so many toxic chemicals, additives, and preservatives in our food and environment. We are becoming more conscious of what we’re eating, and turning more and more to organic fruits and vegetables. We’re starting to be aware of additives and preservatives in our food and how it affects us. But have you thought about what you put on your skin? Take the time now to look at beauty products’ labels the same way you look at food labels. Here’s a list of a couple of the common harmful ingredients in skincare and how they may affect you: Parabens: Parabens are used as preservatives to prevent the growth of bacteria, mould, and yeast in cosmetic products. Hang on, that sounds like it might be a good thing, I hear you say. No. There’s a bad side to parabens. Very bad. Parabens have oestrogen-mimicking properties that have been associated with increased risk of breast cancer. They absorb easily and have been identified in breast tumours. These nasty little particles can be found in makeup, body washes, deodorants, shampoos, and facial cleansers, as well as food and pharmaceutical products. Fragrance: They may make products smell nice, but many contain chemicals that are hazardous to your health. Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system, and can be found in many products such as perfume, cologne, conditioner, shampoo, body wash, and moisturisers. Pull out your skincare, have a look at what’s in it (google the ingredients if I have not yet covered here), and ask yourself, ‘Am I using the best, toxic-free products on my face/body?’ If your answer is no, don’t fret, it’s not too late to do something about it. Well, there we have it, folks. And yet we’ve only covered a couple of chemicals today. Over the coming months we’ll explore the effects of Phthalates, Sodium lauryl sulfate/Sodium laureth sulfate, Formaldehyde, Toluene, Propylene glycol, and sunscreen chemicals.

Vibrancy Funds Provide Boost To Canungra

Put the Spring Back In Your Step!

More than $100,000 has been allocated to projects in the Canungra area as part of Council’s Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative. Council committed $1 million to this new initiative in 2014/15 and today voted to fund a range of projects to the value of $850,000 in Aratula, Beaudesert, Boonah, Canungra, Tamborine and Tamborine Mountain. In Canungra $110,000 in funding will be divided between an extension of the footpath network on Lamington National Park Rd in addition to landscaping and beautification throughout the village. “Our commitment to the community was that we would deliver a range of infrastructure improvements, some subtle, some significant, to enhance the character of towns and villages throughout the Scenic Rim,” Mayor John Brent said. “This is not a one-off for this year, Council will be funding this program annually well into the future and I am committed to supporting this initiative over the long term.

Spring time is here and I know you are tired of feeling a little un-inspired and demotivated whilst having lost yourself somewhere along the way. Let me let you in on a little secret - you are not alone! There are many others out there feeling, breathing and living the same reality as you, an unsteady one! And you are all welcome to this day workshop - in fact we are creating a safe, fun, friendly, encouraging space for women to Put The Spring Back In Their Step. So let me share with you in my upcoming workshop - Put The Spring Back In Your Step a simple, step by step programme with activities in sprinkled throughout the workshop. Women are incredible at facilitating huge change, if they have the right mentor and a reliable fool proof frame work to getting their minds on the right pathway for them! So join me on Saturday 11th October at 1030am to 230pm at the Canungra Yoga Studio on Appel Street (thank you Kara!) for Putting the Spring Back in Your Step. You will come away with personal growth, abundance of free thinking, confidence, initiative and vigour. If you require any further details regarding the day’s activities phone or text on 0456 390 865 or email adelespurgin@me.com

“I think the positive outcomes we are delivering under the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages to enhance areas around Canungra will be of benefit to the community.” Deputy Mayor and Division 3 Councillor Virginia West said the funding was a great outcome for the local community. “Formalising the footpath along Lamington National Park Rd will enhance the amenity of the popular Coburg Loop, which is a popular walking trail with locals and visitors alike,” she said. “We will also be undertaking landscaping and beautification in Christie St, DJ Smith Park, the School of Arts car park and around the town entry signs. It’s great that we will be able to enhance the village and surrounds. “The Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages program is delivering outcomes which respond to the current and future needs of our community and create vibrant and active spaces, be it improvements for walkers, enhancing our public facilities or entirely new projects.”

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon curry powder 1 tablespoon vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Fresh rosemary for garnish

Method:

Hard boil the eggs and remove the shells. Set the eggs aside. To prepare the brine, pour a can of pickled beetroot into a large mason jar or bowl. Add cider vinegar, sugar, peppercorns and salt. Stir mixture. Carefully (that beetroot juice will stain!) lower the hard boiled eggs into the brine, cover and let sit for at least 12 hours, up to 2 or three days. The longer you leave them in the brine, the more sour and pink they’ll end up. To have the rim of pink and slight pickled flavor, let them sit for about 16 hours. When brining time is finished, cut each egg in half and scoop out yolks. Place yolks in a medium-sized bowl, along with the mustard, mayonnaise, curry, vinegar, and olive oil. Mix/mash until smooth. You can always add a little bit of water to the mixture, if it is too stiff. Salt and pepper to taste. Using a pastry bag or a plastic bag with the corner cut off, pipe the yolk mixture back into the pink eggs. Sprinkle with chopped rosemary and season with salt and pepper.

St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough, Guild President A great time was had by members of St Luke’s when a camping weekend was organised at Spring Gully Stays. Apart from the serene and beautiful surroundings at the camp site everyone who attended relaxed and enjoyed good food and fellowship. Many discussions also took place in a relaxed manner regarding St Luke’s going forward. The weekend is something well worth doing again. The recent Guild meeting, held to discuss church activities leading up to Christmas, was well attended and commenced with a BBQ meal together. Another chance to get together and enjoy the company of others before dealing with the agenda items, including the organisation of our annual Christmas street stall to be held on Saturday 13th December. It was with sadness a memorial service was held at St Luke’s and conducted by Rev Valerie following the passing of Barry Libke. It was fitting that Barry was farewelled from St Luke’s as his beautiful cross stitch works which he kindly donated to the church and used to decorate and enhance the building and the alter. Barry was very generous in his giving of such beautiful hand work and we value his kindness. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to Barry’s wife Clare and all family members in their sad loss. May your memories live on to remind you of the special man Barry was. The Chat group still meets in the Pavilion every Wednesday. Please feel free to join in for friendship and fellowship. Wishing you many blessings.

Relationships are showing up old habits, in no uncertain manner. As comforting as predictability is, it is anathema to love. Life is showing you these things, to shock you out of a reverie that isn’t likely to serve you well in the long term. All that is required is warmth and understanding.

As Venus moves through Libra, so delight moves from the flesh, to more ethereal and refined matters. Matters of justice may well grab hold of you and demand to be acted on, resolved, or understood. You are moving from an open field to an art gallery. Are you ready to adapt? GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) With Mercury in Libra, life is giving you permission to wiseacre as widely and freely as you want. Think through all the things that are bothering you. Give your mind full permission to roam in search of answers – or maybe even questions. Balance will come to you in its own way. CANCER (June 22 – July 22) By slowly and meticulously putting all that you hold to be true into practise, you will find the lightness your whole being has been craving. Nothing will be resolved by sitting around and thinking about it. Resolution will come through being practical. Roll up your sleeves. LEO (July 23 – Aug 22) With Jupiter in your midst, your star is on the ascent. The fact that the Sun is moving through Libra is also doing you no harm. The airy, refined nature of Libra, fits with your aristocratic nature. Focus on what is beautiful, just, peaceful and dynamically balanced, as you deem fit. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) Life might feel a little like it is keeping you firmly planted in a solitary place this month. This is by no means a bad thing. The existential suggestion is that you connect with your centre, do some healing – and free yourself up for the next adventure. Balance and patience will be helpful. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) With both the Sun and Venus passing through your part of the sky, one would have to say that the omens are good. The Sun will beef up your sense of presence – and Venus, of course, will add her blessings to all things concerned with love. Add a little salt, to temper all this sweetness. SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Venus is on her way. The Sun is on its way. Mercury isn’t too far off visiting you either. But none of them are actually here. Life will feel like all its blessings are residing just over the horizon. Make all the anticipation you are in, work as a positive thing. Wait, in a joyous way. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) As Jupiter rises to ever greater heights, so you can ride on his wings. If you want to go higher, then communication of every kind is what will work best. Be as curious as a kitten, as innocent and unknowing as a Zen Master, and as willing to share as Socrates. Warm up the world. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) As Saturn moves into the final part of his journey through Scorpio, so the focus turns to home. You might be taking home for granted, in which case life will find ways to help you remember how precious it is. Or, you might be craving a truly nurturing environment. If so, find it! AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) By working at what you do, with even a modicum of totality and sincerity, you are developing your skills in ways that are deeply meaningful. You might not even notice the way you are growing. You will down the track. This is a time of silent enrichment. Be more yourself. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) As you ply your trade, so, many things are falling into place. They are falling into place silently, which makes it hard to turn what you are doing into an ego trip. It may be that you aren’t even noticing the steps you are taking, because you are so immersed. Let nature be your guide. © M.J.Dean 2014

FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month - September

Our sportsperson of the month for September is Jess Wilson. Jess excels in all sports. Apart from completing her year 12 studies this year Jess has participated in: • Beaudesert High School Volleyball Team State Championships held in Toowoomba. • Division 1 Women’s Soccer in the Gold Coast Football League. • Represented the U/19 Girls South Coast Soccer Team. • Selected for the 2014 Qld City U/19 Girls Futsal Team (declined the offer due to year 12 studies). • School districts for 1500m, 800m and discuss. Her biggest achievement for this year was representing the Australian Women’s Youth Futsal Team. The team travelled to San Francisco where they played the representative teams for San Francisco including colleges and against open women’s

On Wednesday 10th September, the Canungra Chamber of Commerce held their annual golf day at the Canungra Area Golf Club. It was a 2 Man Ambrose Event held over 9 holes. With 37 players teeing off, the event was played in good spirits and well supported with a number of players joining in for the first time. Although the day was organised as a fund-raiser for the Chamber of Commerce, the main goal was to get members of the Canungra business community socialising together along with their suppliers and customers. Teams represented were from Canungra News, Canungra Times, Aussie Lifestyle Properties, Canungra Hotel, Trilogy Accounting, Outpost Café, and Canungra RSL Services Club. Congratulations to the winners for the second year running from Trilogy Accounting represented by Robbie Boardman, Ant Coleman, Marty Bennet and Geoff Hansen. The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all sponsors of the day: Canungra Hotel, Canungra Golf Club, Norco/Fronterra Brands, Canungra News, Outpost Café, Café Metz, Funky Dory Diner, Flesser’s Bakery, Aussie Lifestyle Properties and Bendigo Bank; and all the people who came together to lend their support to make the day a successful one. A special thanks to Canungra Area Golf Club who hosted the event on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce looks forward to continuing this event and welcomes any new sponsors and players to join us next year for some fun socialising with and supporting your local business community through the Canungra Chamber of Commerce.

Canungra Under 12’s Prevail in a Thriller By David Baker

On Saturday 13th September the Canungra Owls Under 12 team playing their special brand of football took out the grand final in Division 3 against Musgrave 4-3 after extra time. Incisive runs by MacAuley and Ethan resulted in well taken goals and another run by Mac ended in a penalty to Canungra which he slotted expertly. Greg Spurgin in goal and Chloe Lowe at the back kept Canungra in the game till the end of regular time with a few other players feeling the after effects of the flu. It was a nail biter for parents and spectators alike as regular time ended as a three all draw. So to extra time and in the first 10 minute half Canungra potted a goal and it was a cliffhanger till the final whistle blew amid jubilation from the Canungra team, spectators.and the giant Owl mascot (thanks Jeremy and Connah). Many thanks to Lea Collins for taking on the coaching of this team and congratulations to the players: Satene Arnold, Reilly Baker, MacAuley Bennett, Ethan Collins, John Harrison, Trad Sutherland, Chloe Lowe, Zach Mansfield, Jack Maughan, Greg Spurgin, Zoey Stephanou, Lachlan Tomlinson and Aaron Williams.

Special mention to the Musgrave coach, Lee Melling who was very gracious in his post match speech and posted a congratulatory message on facebook which was very kind. Both teams represented their clubs with passion and sportsmanship in a

game that could have gone either way and their clubs should be very proud. The Canungra Owls Under 12 team has received the Moriarty Park FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month Award for October 2014 (see page 34).
