Canungra Showgrounds was alive with colour for the 74th Annual Canungra Show on Saturday 25th August.

Show Secretary, Shona Kraayvanger, said it was great to see good weather conditions after several years of wet show days.

“Attendance was certainly up on last year,” said Shona.

“The entries in the Pavillion were down on previous years, but the standard was very high. It was great to see the ring events were well supported, especially the show jumping,” she said.

Jade Graduates with Honours

Local girl, Jade Carlson graduated from Griffith University on 7th August with Honors.

She graduated the Bachelor of Laws with Class 11B Honors and the Bachelor of Business Human Resource Management courses after five and a half years of dedicated study and hard work.

Jade has also beaten 49 students from Bond University to secure a position with a leading Gold Coast law firm.

Jade was born and grew up in Canungra, going to the Canungra State School with Colleen Murphy as Principal.

After primary school, she attended Varsity College on the Gold Coast but continued with her beloved Jazz Ballet here in Canungra until she finished high school.

Jade has many fond memories and friends still living here.

Canungra State School Principal, Colleen Murphy said Jade was a bright student who was a valuable member of the school communityduring her time at Canungra State School.

“She was a lovely girl and very intelligent,” said Colleen, “It is

Jade’s mum, Carolyn, and dad, Leigh, are very proud of her dedication and achievements.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are,” said Leigh, “You can achieve greatness if you set your sights right and work hard for your goals.”

Jade worked as a sales representative while she was at University.

She is looking forward to beginning her career in the legal profession and pursuing her dreams.

By Chloe Pickard Carol and Katrina Mahony attended the Beaudesert and District Restored Auto Club Car Gymkhana for the first time on Sunday 19th August.

Held in Darlington Park, members of the club competed in games while campers watched.

Carol has been elected president of the club this year and hopes to continue the fine work of her predecessors.

She came fifth in the gymkhana, with the Teese family taking first, second and third prizes.

Carol said despite disappointing numbers, the day had been great fun.

“We had an excellent day and it’s always good company,” she said.

Katrina owns a 1966 Vauxhall Victor, and Carol has a 1954 Holden Ute. Carol’s vehicle is one of only three in Australia and has been in her family for forty years.

Vintage cars such as a 1975 Holden Chas, a 1946 Chevvy Ute and an imported ex-English Army Reynolds Broughton also competed at the gymkhana.

Rick, Jo, Trevor, Jack and Lucas Harrold would like to thank the people of Canungra for their help and support during Jo’s illness.

“In November 2011, Jo was diagnosed with inoperable, terminal pancreatic cancer,” said Rick, “At the time they gave us a year. The chemotherapy and radiation therapy has meant numerous trips to Brisbane. I want to thank my mum, Elaine Harrold, and Bren Dalby for taking her for treatment every day.”

The family would also like to thank the many people who have assisted them over the last year, in particular: Greg Caswell, George and Bren Dalby, CWA (Wonglepong), Jim and Desley Caswell, a huge thanks to Colleen Murphy and all the mums who have provided the family with various fantastic meals and cakes.

Rick and Jo also expressed their thanks to the organisers of RimFest, Michelle Plant and Ingrid Gill and everyone who was involved in the day.

“I just want to thank the community for their support,” said Rick, “It has been overwhelming.”

Jo is continuing with treatment at present.

Veterans Gather

Saturday 18th August was the 50th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Canungra RSL Sub-Branch commemorated the event with a special memorial service at Kokoda Barracks to remember the 521 diggers who gave their lives and the 3,000 soldiers wounded.

Most of those killed or wounded in the Vietnam conflict had trained at the Jungle Training Centre here in Canungra before embarking overseas.

Local Vietnam veterans gathered at the Vietnam memorial in the army base with interstate veterans, dignitaries and invited guests.

Originally known as Long Tan Day, 18th August is the day the nation reflects on the bravery and professionalism of all soldiers, sailors and airmen who either

gave their lives during the ten year conflict, or suffered as a result of their service.

The date was chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966.

On that day 106 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not from from the small village of Long Tan. In 1987, following the very successful Welcome Home parade for Vietnam veterans in Sydney, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. Since then, it has been commemorated every year as the day on which the service of all those men and women who served in Vietnam is remembered.

Canungra’s History

Kokoda Barracks

By Chloe Pickard In 1942, Brigadier General R G H Irving returned from overseas and advised the Australian Commander in Chief General Blamey that all reinforcements who were to be sent to New Guinea should be first trained for jungle conditions.

There were three sites for a proposed jungle training base. Canungra won over Kyogle and Murwillumbah and the Land Headquarters Training Centre was built there.

The odds seemed against one being successfully formed from the start.

There were only four weeks to move to Canungra and prepare to train 500 men, and there were no stores or equipment waiting for them.

The resumption of farmland by the government angered farmers in the area, who banded together and demanded a better price.

Nevertheless, the Land Warfare Centre began training men in 1943.

The soldiers lived eight men to a tent, with 1000 soldiers being trained at a time.

In the morning, they would all go down to the weir to wash and shave before the day of intense training began.

At first, trainees were unimpressed by

the staff who didn’t seem to have had any experience in the jungle themselves.

This changed as different instructors were brought in and they were taught bushcraft, skill at arms, demolitions, signals, driving and how to drive a motorcycle.

In 1954, when the base needed to be reopened to train soldiers for Cold War operations, there was nothing left of the previous 1940’s buildings. They had to be rebuilt while the soldiers again lived in tents.

The Kokoda Barracks obstacle courses taught soldiers how to move in the jungle and the ‘Snap’ and Gallery ranges taught soldiers how to fire independently of their instructor.

The modern day base is still home to the Land Warfare Training Centre and the Defence Intelligence Training Centre.

Kokoda Barracks has changed over time but always been reputed for its tough, demanding nature. The emblem of the Land Warfare centre is the hydra, to represent the seven disciplines of war.

The Museum of Australian Military Intelligence has put together a display honouring those soldiers who have passed through Canungra.

RimFest Funds Distributed RimFest organisers, Michelle Plant and Ingrid Gill said the total funds raised from RimFest was $5,200 which has now been distributed to families in Canungra. Michelle and Ingrid would like to thank everyone who supported the event by donating prizes, time or attending on the day.

Lock Up Residents are reminded to keep their homes and vehicles secure at all times. Police charged an Arundel man with 26 offences following investigations into burglaries at properties across the Southern and South East police regions. The offences include a break in at the service station at Tamborine on 31st August when cash and a large quantity of cigarettes stolen. The man was to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday 3rd September.

Canungra was the first Scenic Rim community to switch to digital television on 5th September.

Retransmission sites at Canungra, Rathdowney, Kooralbyn and Mt Alford will be upgraded from analogue (the five traditional free-to-air stations) to digital (up to 16 free-to-air channels) during September.

There was a loss of television reception on the day of the Canungra upgrade as technicians install new transmission equipment. The television signal in Canungra is now a digital only transmission, the analogue signal has ceased.

Bruce Howsan of Justrite Video Service, said anyone who can’t get digital reception from the new switchover will be able to apply for the new digital stations via satellite.

Those who are digital ready will simply have to re-tune their television or set top box to receive the new television signals, said Bruce.

“People who have had trouble getting reception with their digital television or set top box after the switchover may also require adjustments to their antenna,” he said, “The switchover leaves people who are using analogue televisions without set top boxes with no television reception.”

The Digital Ready web site states an antenna installer assessing your set up will need to measure the strength of the signal at your house to ensure that you have adequate reception. In particular, the installer measures the MER, which is the best overall measure of the quality of a digital television signal. The MER should be equal to or greater than 24 dB. If the measured MER is less than 24 dB at ground level, the installer may need to climb onto your roof (or take a measurement at 10 metres above ground level) to measure the signal.

The installer should also check the condition of your current antenna, and find the best position and height for your

antenna to receive digital signals (a position that has provided good analog reception may not be the best position for good digital reception).

Before your installer carries out any work, you should discuss with the installer whether the changes being proposed will improve your terrestrial reception.

If it is not possible to improve your reception, you may need to consider moving to the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service to receive digital television.

You should also ask your antenna installer for a copy of the signal strength measurements taken at your house.

The rest of the Scenic Rim will switch to a digital-only signal on 28th May 2013.

“For households in Canungra that require practical assistance to make the switch, such as the elderly, people with disabilities and their carers, the Household Assistance Scheme is also available,” said Nadia O’Loughlin, Head of the Digital Switchover taskforce.

New Focus for Rate Payers Association

Members of the Scenic Rim Rate Payers Association Inc elected a new management committee and president for the coming year at the Annual General Meeting in July 2012.

Incoming president Astrid Kennedy of Mt Tamborine said she sees her role, together with the management committee, as expanding the association’s charter.

“We have plans for providing a website information hub where rate payers can find out what’s happening with the important issues throughout our region” she said.

Astrid says she feels very strongly about the need to protect democracy and ensure the peoples’ voice is heard and listened to.

“Now is a good time for the Rate Payers Assoc. to expand its focus – its “watch dog” role can be moved to the back burner and a new information network can come to the fore,” she said.

Astrid sees an opportunity for the association to keep people informed of the “big picture” issues in the region under one website.

She said the association is interested in hearing about issues which could adversely affect rate payers of the Scenic Rim, whether they are council related or not.

Rate payers are encouraged to contact the association with information and to monitor the website (in a few weeks time)

Accident

A 34-year-old Central Queensland man died and a three year old girl was hospitalised with serious internal injuries following a crash at Canungra on Sunday 26th August.

The 3 year old, a passenger in the man’s vehicle, was transported to the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital.

Around 1.05pm, the man was driving on Beaudesert Nerang Road when his utility struck a sedan heading in the opposite direction, before colliding head on with another utility behind it.

The occupants of the other utility involved, a 35 year old man (the driver), a 35 year old woman and two girls, aged three and five years, were also transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A 58-year-old woman driving the sedan and her passenger, a 64-year-old man, were not injured.

The road was closed until 6pm while the scene was cleared.

Obituary Ann Klupfel 10th April 1948 - 1st August 2012

On Tuesday, 7th of August, Ann Klupfel was laid to rest at Tamborine Mountain Cemetery, following a moving service at St George’s Anglican Church. The loved wife of Bernie Klupfel, led a full and rich life but was taken too soon after a three year battle with cancer.

Ann began her life on 10th of April, 1948 in Brisbane. Mum Doris and Dad Harold were so pleased to welcome beautiful little Ann into the world. She was the second daughter of Doris and Harold, whose first child Joy had sadly passed away when she was only 12. And so Ann began her life as an only child.

She spent her childhood in Oakey. Around the age of 12, the family moved to Raceview, Ipswich where she attended Raceview Primary, followed by Bremer State High School.

When she was about 17, she decided to have a night out dancing, at the Marburg Show Hall and it was on this night that she met a young lad who went by the name of Bernie.

Now she had found a true love in Bernie, Ann went on to attend teacher’s college at Kelvin Grove. Her first teaching job was at North Ipswich Primary and this was the beginning of a lifelong commitment to education, a profession which she was truly passionate about.

All this time, the romance between Ann and Bernie grew and they married on 9th of August, 1969 at St Andrew’s Church in Brisbane.

Ann and Bernie moved to Mt Isa which became their home for the next 11 years. Ann taught at the local school, forming friendships that would last a lifetime. In 1977, she gave birth to her first child, Matthew and followed up with her first daughter, Emily in 1980.

Now a family, they moved to Canungra briefly where Ann began teaching at Canungra Primary and she taught there until her retirement. As she continued her teaching career

at Canungra, she and her family moved to Mt Tamborine and into the family home that Bernie built. In 1983, she gave birth to Jessica and then Dominic, her youngest, in 1989.

Not only was she a dedicated mum and fulltime teacher, she also taught Sunday School at St George’s church. Each year, when the Spring Fair came around, you could count on Annie’s Ice-creamery to be open for business.

Even though she had a hectic schedule, she always managed to find time for her children and grandchildren, Will, Livanna and Kaden.

Ann had a love of travelling and visited many parts of the world over her lifetime, travelling around Europe, Russia, Canada and America just to name a few. Later on in life, she got the travelling bug again.

Sadly though it was around this time that she discovered she was ill with cancer which was absolutely devastating. However, this didn’t stop her from living, and she continued to add to her extensive list of travel destinations. She was a fighter and so strong. In between treatments, surgeries and hospital stays she and Bernie squeezed in as much as they possibly could. Her final big trip was to England during the Christmas of 2010, visiting Pooh’s Corner in the 100 Acre Wood to play Pooh Sticks on the bride in the snow. She and Bernie spent a beautiful white Christmas in Austria, a spirited New Year in Scotland, visited Beatrix Potter’s house in Windermere and took tea in Jane Austen’s tea room in Bath. She loved that trip but sadly it was to be her last.

Bernie always called her his little flower.

She was many things to many people – a beautiful flower, a loving mother and Annma, a caring cousin, a dedicated teacher, a wonderful friend, a reliable member of the community.

She will still be these things to all of us, even now that she is no longer with us. Ann will always be in every autumn leaf, jacaranda tree,

Bernie and family wish to acknowledge with deep appreciation, the many expressions of love, concern and kindness shown to them during this difficult time. They would like to thank the Reverend Allan Paulsen and the Anglican Church for their time and dedication, Dennis from Tasseldom Restaurant for his generous contribution and to those of you in the community who have shown such compassion and generosity.

Ann always cherished the tales of Pooh Bear and his friends and it is fitting to finish with a little smackeral from this much-loved bear.

But, of course, it isn’t really good-bye, because the forest will always be there…and anybody who is friendly with bears can find it.

In that enchanted place on the top of the forest a little boy and his bear will always be playing.

TM GIRL GUIDES ARE BUSY

The Girl Guides from Tamborine Mountain have been busy this year raising funds to go the Australian Girl Guides Jamboree in Tasmania in January 2013. Eight girls and three leaders are confirmed to go from the Tamborine Mountain Unit.

Recently they could be found selling sausages and drinks at a Bunnings BBQ. They will be selling Cadbury Chocolates in the coming weeks so please support them, when you can, and buy a chocolate.

On Friday 21st September (last day of term 3) there will be a Kids Disco at Zamia Theatre, Main Street, North Tamborine from 6pm to 9pm.

Primary school children are able to attend at a cost of $5.

So get a carload of kids together and come up the mountain for a fun night!

Hey Canungra Having just left the shores of Aussie for a short while I got really excited at the prospect of start, maintain and finish.

Starting something very new, ending something old, and maintaining the stuff that matters. Naturally we can gravitate towards anyone of the three which we find easy, and then neglect the ones that require some more work.

For me the maintenance part is the challenge, and man when it comes together I love the result.

Conversely, when I dabble too much on either end, so starting and finishing too often, with neglect of maintain, my results are less satisfactory. Does it sound a bit too easy? That’s because it is.

Ask yourself which comes easiest to you, and then work towards greater behavioral flexibility and stretch yourself by doing more of the one that takes a bit more effort. Trust me, it is well worth the journey.

Rae Lisa Hope

7 May 1956 - 3 August 2012 Rae Hope was born on 7th May 1956 in Katoomba, New South Wales.

In many ways Rae’s story is a story of a life lived to the fullest. She overcame extreme advertisty in her childhood but went on to raise her children, run her own businesses and serve as a Councillor in the Beaudesert Shire Council.

Vanessa Bull, who served with Rae on the Beaudesert Shire Council between 2000 and 2004, said Rae was adamant about fighting for the little people, the people who might never be heard.

“She always put people so at ease,” said Vanessa, “She always listened and tried to help. She certainly made Council interesting - even when things seemed desperate, Rae would find the light side. We laughed a lot but we worked hard too.”

Rae held many jobs in Canungra including cleaning the school and the pub, cooking at the RSL and the Motel, running the pizza shop, working in the RACQ workshop, she realy did love and give so much to Canungra.

Rae was a talented writer and used her skills to start the Canungra Star, the precursor to the current loacal paper. She built the Scenic Rim News web site and also worked as the Canungra correspondent for the Beaudesert Times and later for The Canungra Times.

Rae’s family meant the world to her, she and her husband Darren had eight children between them: Kath, Brad, Tim, Beth, Krystal, Jareth, Monique and Bridget and three grandchildren: Ethan, Declan and Kooper.

Tamborine Blinds & Awnings Rae never gave up on anyone, she was always there to help someone in need, always polite, always kind. She gave her own time to volunteer with Lifeline, counselling those in need for the past two years.

Rae will be remembered by her friends and family as a woman who lived life to the full. She was lively, passionate and caring. She loved to laugh, loved parties and going out, loved being with people.

She had great love of life and boundless energy.

Rae passed away on 3rd August 2012 after a short battle with cancer. She was 56.

To quote Rae “Learn from the Past, Plan for the Future, but always Live for Today”.

From My Window...

Well, I survived my first year as Editor of The Canungra Times. I can honestly say it is something I enjoy, despite not knowing which way is up for a few days each month as the deadline looms and being incoherently hyped on caffeine from time to time!

I want to thank everyone who has helped with the paper over the last year: my staff - Julie, Chloe, Vey, Jenny and Ingrid who have been fantastic; the regular columnists and contributors - Mel Whitby, Chris Corcoran, Kim Sami, Ray Hickson, Steve Moriarty, Adele Spurgin, Virgnia West, Jennifer Dougherty, Keith Cogzell, Gina Dignan, Suzanne Roberts; and of course everyone who sends in snippets of news from time to time.

Canungra is a great place to live and a great community and I hope that is reflected in the articles in The Canungra Times.

Having the office in town has made a big difference to the paper. It is somewhere people can come and chat, give their bits of news, all of which helps to keep the paper interesting and local.

So thank you, Canungra, for making this past year so enjoyable, challenging and rewarding for me. I hope I do you all justice and I hope to keep doing this for many years to come.

Organisers Silke’s Vintage High Tea Charity Event would like to extend a very warm and sincere thank you to all who contributed towards the event.

Anita Bunch from Oliva Di Tabragalba, said through donations from members of the community and the support from local businesses over four thousand dollars was raised for Silke.

“I would like to thank Laurene Hassard for her very valued support of both Silke, Margot, Mandi and myself,” said Anita, “Local vineyards Albert River Winery, O’Reillys and Sarabah Vineyard Estate; Scott from Oliva Di Tabragalba for hosting the event and a special thank you to Mandi, Ashli and Bella from Supplize Decor Hire who managed to transport all who atttended the Vintage High Tea to a bygone era with their lovely vintage themed decorations. The Auction was a huge success thanks to the personality and humour from Troy Mackriell.”

Anita also thanked Tamborine Times, The Canungra Times, Jo Debruyn (Deputy Principal, Tamborine Mountain State School), Kim Wilder and Sharon and Jan from Shon’s Lost For Words for their support.

The money raised will help support Silke and her sons as she receives chemotherapy treatment over the next six months.

“With the community’s support hopefully we have aided in making Silke’s journey a bit lighter and helped to fill her heart with the love and support from the community she chose to raise her family in,” said Anita, “A heartfelt thank you for the love and support of my own family and my very dear friend Margot Wagner.”

The Cat and The Husband A man absolutely hated his wife’s cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park. As he arrived home, the cat was walking up the driveway.

The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat!

He kept taking the cat further and further, and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there.

Hours later the man calls home to his wife: “Jen, is the cat there?”

“Yes”, the wife answers, “why do you ask?”

Frustrated, the man answered, “Put him on the phone, I’m lost and need directions.”

By Chloe Pickard Abraham Lincoln really killed vampires? Really? Yes, it’s a stupid idea but it does make for a fun film. The film’s based off the literature mashups that started with and by the same author as Sense and Sensibility and Zombies, Seth Graham-Smith.

After Abraham’s mother is killed by a vampire, he attempts to avenge her years later only to find her murderer isn’t human. A man named Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper) rescues him, reveals a secret world of vampires and teaches him how to hunt them. When Abraham realises how vampires have been feeding from slaves, he realises something bigger must be done. I found the balance between the real issue of slavery and how the vampires fit in uneasy, but considering the source material I’m not too sure how much seriousness I should have expected.

Benjamin Walker makes his screen leading role as Abraham Lincoln, and makes for a pleasant hero even after he disappears under old-age make up and beard. I found Mary Elizabeth Winstead genuinely charming as Mary Todd, Abraham’s wife.

If you like action, non-sparkling vampires and can handle complete historical inaccuracy, it’s for you.

Council Comment

ARE YOU DIGITAL READY? The Federal Government Digital Switchover Taskforce have advised that Canungra was the first Scenic Rim community to change to digital transmission on 5th September.

There will be no parallel transmission of digital and analogue television so make sure you have a digital ready TV or a digital set top box in order to receive a TV signal. There are fact sheets available on Council’s website, www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au, and more information on the Federal site www.digitalready.gov.au. If you are having trouble with your reception you can also call the Digital Ready Hotline on 1800 201 013.

FLOOD RESTORATION UPDATE Another contract has been awarded by Council as part of the $46.7 million dollar disaster recovery funding approved by the Queensland Restoration Authority. Funding is for flood and rain damage for the 2010/11 and 2011/12 rain events experienced by Scenic Rim. Canungra residents will be pleased to see restoration works on parts of the following roads: Boyland Road, Chantelle Place and Coburg Road.

There are more contracts still to be announced which involve further roads in our area .

28th July - 3rd August - Swimming Championships Harrison Smith competed at the Australian School Sport Swimming Carnival in Sydney representing Queensland. He competed in three events and was successful in all. He received a silver medal for the 50m Breaststroke, a bronze medal for the 200m Individual Medley and a bronze medal for the 200m Relay in which he swam the second fastest leg. Well done Harrison!

1st - 2nd August - Gold Coast North Athletics Abbey Thorogood, Josh Aiken, Aiden Bell McNee, Emily Hill, Jessica Savy, Zak Tilley, Callum Mann and Regan Lowry represented the school at the Gold Coast North District Athletics Carnival.

These students trained hard before the event, and displayed outstanding sportsmanship and a competitive spirit. They should all be very proud of their achievements. They will be continuing on to the Gold Coast Regional Athletic Trials later this month in these events.

10th August - Combined Senior Band Day The Senior Band performed with the Beechmont State School Senior Band for the Combined Senior Band Day. Congratulations to the Senior Band students, John Clyde, Cameron Hart and Tim Hunt on a very successful day. The concert at the end of the day was fantastic!

14th And 17th August - Gold Coast Eisteddfod The Senior Band competed in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod on 14th August at the Gold Coast Arts Centre and were awarded a Highly Commended for their performance. The Junior Band were also awarded a Highly Commended on the 17th August. These are results that the students and instructor John Clyde can feel proud to have achieved.

9th August - Numinbah Valley Environmental Trailer Students in Year 5 and 6 participated in information sessions which tied in with their current studies of sustainable energy.

School Happenings 16th August - Free Dress Day The students were encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite superhero, or to wear their pyjamas. Money raised from the gold coin donation was donated to the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association.

18th August - Vietnam Veteran’s Day Ceremony Emily Hughes and Jasp Leach represented the school at the Vietnam Veteran’s Day Ceremony at Kokoda Barracks. These two Year 7 students were excellent ambassadors for the School Community.

19th August - LOTE Speaking Competition Jade Young, Chloe Hughes, Heather Moriarty, Morgan Lee and Emily Hughes represented the school at the LOTE Speaking Competition at Griffith University. The students did an excellent job. Special mention goes to Emily Hughes who was awarded ‘Highly Commended’.

20th - 24th August - Book Week Every class in the school contributed a fantastic display for Book Week.

This year’s theme was ‘Champions Read’, and the students were invited to have their photo taken with other students as they posed with their favourite short-listed book.

21st August - ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Performance The students were given the opportunity to watch a play ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in the school hall performed by students from Tamborine Mountain College.

During the June/July school holidays Teena Woodall, aka “The Nag Nanny”, conducted a three day camp for young horse enthusiasts.

Students arrived each morning full of excitement ready for their day with the horses.

Each day started with a trip around the property then up to the steepest hill in order for the kids to burn of some of their excitement.

Once the children had caught their breath it was then time for the Nag Nanny co-ooeee competition.

Each day the children enjoyed lots of horsey activities, including: • Grooming/Fancy Dress • Scavenger Hunt • Games • Learning – parts of bridle, parts of the horse, etc.

Over the course of the three days the children learned how to be safe around horse; how to approach and how to catch a horse. In addition children also learnt the principles of grooming, mounting, dismounting; and riding skills - walk, halt, turn and trotting and plenty more.

With the best saved for last - day three saw the children learning all about trick riding. Firstly practicing on “Rocky”, the man-made horse, and then the real deal!

Teena is running another three day camp in the September/October school holidays from 2nd - 4th October. The camp runs during school hours each day (it is not an overnight camp). Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

25th August - Canungra Show The school choir and band performed enthusiastically at the Canungra Show to an appreciative audience including parents and members of the community. Many students submitted entries to the show, and the standard of work was very high. The school display was a credit to the hard work and talent of the students and staff. The Garden Club achieved a number of awards for the produce they had on display, including a second place, seven first prizes, and an award and banner for both Most Successful Exhibit and Champion Exhibit.

27th - 31st August - National Literacy And Numeracy Week On Tuesday 28th August, the school celebrated National Literacy and Numeracy Week by having a day of shared activities, beginning with a ‘How many Jellybeans in the Nude Food Lunchbox’ competition. Thank you to Year 1A teacher Bernadette Bracey-Finch who organised all the activities for the day and donated both the lunchboxes and jellybeans.

31st August - Interschool Sport Selected students from Years 4 - 7 participated in Soccer and League Tag for Interschool Sport. Junior Soccer was played at the school, Senior Soccer at Moriarty Park Sportsground, while Junior and Senior League Tag was held at St Bernard State School.

Legal Talk Social Media Advertising

By Suzanne Roberts Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers Beware the perils of advertising via social media The Australian Advertising Standards Bureau’s recent determination that a business’ Facebook page can operate as an advertisement has far reaching implications for the management of business risk generally.

This decision illustrates what marketing has known for some time – social media tools are not necessarily just a method of networking or communicating with consumers. Such use can legally amount to advertising.

The determination followed an investigation of a complaint made about various comments and photographs uploaded by Smirnoff, and members of the Smirnoff Facebook community, onto a Smirnoff Facebook page.

The content was publicly accessible, including to users under the age of 18, and apparently featured: • Sexist, racist and other forms of discriminatory comment or vilification; • Irresponsible drinking and excessive consumption of alcohol; • Obscene language; • Depiction of under-25 year olds consuming alcohol; and • Material that connects alcohol consumption with sexual or social prowess.

The take-home warning is that a business can be responsible for third party generated content posted on its social media pages or accounts.

Categorisation as a ‘publisher’ or ‘advertiser’ opens the door on a wide range of risks, including claims of misleading and deceptive conduct, defamation, breach of privacy and intellectual property infringement.

There are also wide ranging ramifications for organisations whose employee’s access and use social media.

What does this all mean for your business?

Businesses that utilize social media platforms should give careful consideration to their current policies and practices, particularly around: • Terms and conditions of use; • Monitoring; and • Moderation of content.

The fact that content was generated or posted by a third party may not be a defence.

Businesses need to ensure: • The accuracy of all statements and representations made on social media sites within their control • That they provide training to staff on acceptable terms of use and have clearly defined policies in place.

Superb Fairy-Wren (Malurus Cyaneus)

Many home owners in Australia enjoy attracting particular bird species into their gardens. One of the most well known and loved of these species is the Superb Fairy-Wren. This tiny bird is easily recognised by its coloring, size and sheer personality. Male Superb Fairy –Wren are best identified by a blue head cap, cheek patch and back. Female birds are a dull brown in color with an orange-brown eye ring. This species may be confused with the Variegated Fairy-Wren (nominate race) in South East Queensland.

Usually, Superb Fairy-Wrens are seen in small family groups moving through dense vegetation. They will carry out a series of hops when moving through areas that are open.

The musical song of this bird is very distinctive and male birds can regularly be seen singing through the breeding season. Superb FairyWrens can nest from June to February. The nest is a small and domed shaped and placed low in suitable vegetation. It is made from grass, twigs and spiders’ web/egg-sacs. Usually, 3-4 eggs can be laid.

The range of the Superb Fairy-Wren extends from southern coastal Queensland through to South Australia and Tasmania. As mentioned, this amazing little bird may be observed in man-made habitats as well as natural. These habitats include undergrowth of forests, riverside vegetation, shelter belts, lantana, margins of roads, orchards, gardens and parks.

The Superb Fairy-Wren is a bird species loved by many for its endearing nature and bold attitude. I have had many experiences with this small bird species over the years and it never ceases to amaze me as to how ‘tame’ Superb Fairy Wrens can be when observed so far from human habitation.

For anyone interested in seeing this small bird, I would advise becoming familiar with its call. A short walk in the right habitat should reveal these small birds, which are very common throughout their range. Throughout my lifetime of birding, I have enjoyed many encounters with the Superb Fairy Wren. I am sure that I will continue to do so into the future.

Wonders of A Godless World

Local girl Katie Bell is taking part in Griffith Drama’s play Wonders Of A Godless World.

Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Australian author Andrew McGahan, the play is a science fiction drama.

Katie said that she had previously enjoyed McGahan’s work and that it was great to showcase his work.

“It’s an honour to peform in the Brisbane Powerhouse,” she said.

As the play uses multiple to create special effects, the 20-people-strong cast must remember many cues as well as taking on roles in aspects of the play such as promotion and lighting. Katie was part of the marketing team, sending out invites to professinals and designing the program’s layout.

Her director Shaun Charles said that Katie had been wonderful.

“She’s really focused and hardworking on stage and off,” he said.

Her mother Becky Bell-McKnee said that she thought the play was a very powerful piece.

“I’m very proud of my daughter,” she said.

Wonders Of A Godless World has made five thousand dollars since opening.

Katie is in her third year of her Bachelor of Arts in Applied Theatre

and has previously appeared in a 2011 modernised version of Antigone and Scales and Feathers.

She has wanted to be an actress since she was eight, and plans to open her own theatre company after graduating.

AWL Pets of the Month

Lennox: Lennox is a fun loving Irish wolfhound x bullmastiff. He is a big, strong boy who loves playing. Lennox can also be very affectionate and loves some down time. He is social with other dogs and wouldn’t mind a friend to play with at home. His new owner will need to take him to training but he will enjoy the experience and is eager to learn.

Lennox is available at Coombabah Rehoming Centre for $240 and he is desexed, microchipped, wormed and fully vaccinated.

Carlos: Carlos is a beautiful quiet boy who is a 5 year old Domestic medium hair tabby cat.

Moriarty Park News June Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month The June Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month is fifteen year old Scott Dalby.

A student at Tamborine Mountain State High School, Scott was the 15 Years crosscountry champion, 15 Years athletics champion and overall 15 Years boys sport champion for 2012.

He also plays soccer for the Robina club in the Under 15 Junior Premier League competition on the Gold Coast, and is striker in the team who are undefeated all season and minor premiers.

We wish Scott and his team all the best in the forthcoming finals series.

In swimming, Jeremy competed in the open division at the Gold Coast Championships gaining second place in 50m backstroke, third in the 100m IM, forth in the 100m backstroke, fifth in the 100m freestyle and seventh in the 50m butterfly, outstanding results for a 16 year old.

He then went on to represent the Helensvale Swimming Club at the State Short Course Championships in all four strokes, swimming personal bests and gaining a top 15 ranking in Queensland.

August Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month The August Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month is sixteen year old Jeremy Jacques.

A student at Tamborine Mountain State High School, Jeremy was runner-up in the school cross-country race. He went on to place fifth at the District and eigth at the Regional carnivals. At the school athletics carnival, Jeremy won the 800m and 1500m, breaking records in both events.

He also placed second in the discus.

By Ray Hickson On Sunday 26th August, Canungra Bowls Club Mixed Fours Day proved to be a great success with 16 teams from around the Coast taking part. Winners of the day were Stumpy Lee, Ellenor Kuipers, Greg White and Craig Brown from Mudgeeraba with 4 + 50. Runner Up was the team from Rathdowney: Trevor Domjahn, Debra McGarry, Elle Taylor and Bob Domjahn with 4 + 32. Third prize went to Les Paice, Lyn Dutoit, Kay Bryant and Keith Bryant from Benowa with +10.

Riverside Over 50’s Resort at Coomera made their Annual visit to Canungra Bowls Club on Tuesday 24th July . After morning tea, along with members of Canungra Bowls Club, they all played 21 ends of bowls before having lunch. An enjoyable day was had by all.

Canungra Bowls Club held the mens singles competition on Saturday 28th July. Ten bowlers played three games of 16 ends. Congratulations goes to Peter White who had an overall win of 6 + 27, second was Mykal Prosser and third Shane Stephenson.

Canungra Under 8 Team Shine at Carnival

season in which you all have shown improvement. A coach can’t ask for more.

Good luck to the Under 12’s who remained unbeaten in the regular season with 20 wins, 167 goals for and only 11 against. A mighty effort and we hope to see you in the Grand Final on 16th September at 12.30pm at Carrara.

Although the Under 14’s won’t feature in the semi finals they finished 5th and won half their games in Division 3. Well done for sticking together throughout the season.

Finally, congratulations to Canungra boys, Brent Wilson, Regan Lowry and Josh Baker who this year played Under 12 Junior Premier League with Musgrave capturing the minor premiership by remaining unbeaten.

Merrimac held a carnival for under 8 and 9 teams on Sunday 12th August which our under 8’s attended. They were hoping to better their third placing in their group from the Surfers Paradise Apollo Club championships the previous month.

Canungra were first up on Field 1 against Bond Red and held firm for a great draw against a team that soundly beat them at the previous carnival.

Next were Southport Blue which were no match for us on the day, followed by Palm Beach Green which also fell by the wayside to the mighty little Owls team.

The final pool match against Palm Beach Blue again was a stirring victory to the boys in their green and gold Foodworks shirts.

The team showed great defence in these games, stout goalkeeping and effective striking on goal without incurring any penalties for rough play. and followed instructions well (some even from the coach).

The team finished top of the pool well clear of Bond Red and so went into a semi final against Pacific Pines later that afternoon.

The long break till the semi final worked against our young boys as their concentration and physical prowess had waned even though half time was nil-all the boys failed to take advantage of their chances and a chance to wrap up a finals berth. The second half was downhill with Pacific Pines scoring four unanswered goals .

The boys did their club, parents and coach very proud with their efforts and it was particularly pleasing to hear praise from one of the Merrimac organisers on the way the team performed, as well as being approached by a mother of an opposition player who also heaped praise on the team’s performance, which is extremely gratifying.
