Canungra was literally shining for its signature events - the Rodeo on 10th August and the Show on 24th August. After postponing the Rodeo from its original July date, organisers were rewarded with perfect weather, great
crowds and quality entries for both events. Warmer weather was a welcome for rodeo fans who revelled in the thrills and spills provided by riders from across Queensland and New South Wales.

Your lifestyle counts!
At the Show, ring and pavillion entries were up on previous years and patrons had fantastic variety of day time and evening entertainment to enjoy - including the fireworks display and live music which were highlights of the show.

2013 Business Awards
Council and the Combined Regional Chambers of Commerce are inviting nominations over the coming weeks for the third annual Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards. “We are proud to once again partner with the Scenic Rim’s chambers of commerce, which represent the business communities of Beaudesert, Boonah, Tamborine Mountain, Canungra and Kooralbyn, to stage these awards,” Mayor John Brent said. “The awards seek to recognise the vital contribution local businesses make to our communities and the Scenic Rim’s economy.” Cr Brent said the award winners would be announced at a gala presentation night at The Centre Beaudesert on Friday 29th November. He said Council had already secured the services of Local Government Association of Queensland Ambassador and television personality Heather Foord as MC for the event. “While Heather will be familiar to many as the face of National Nine News for many years, she is also an in-demand compere for corporate events and functions,” Cr Brent said. “We look forward to having Heather onboard for what will be an exciting and memorable evening for the awards finalists.” Cr Brent said he was expecting an impressive field of nominees for the 2013 Business Excellence Awards given the standard of entries over the past two years. “The previous two events were a showcase of the achievements of our business community and I expect 2013 will be bigger and better,” he said.

Wedding Bells to Celebrate 30 Years
Tamborine couple Wayne and Kerry Peterie celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows in a ceremony at Clandulla Cottages. The couple won the wedding package after entering a competition at Clandulla Cottage’s wedding Showcase last year. Wayne and Kerry were delighted with the win as they had planned to renew their vows for their anniversary and with the package valued at over $5,000 they were able to hold the ceremony of their dreams. Kerry said the ceremony, held on 24th August, was perfect and thanked Clandulla Cottages and everyone involved in the day for their efforts. The couple were married at a very young age and could only afford a very basic wedding, and so had missed out on having some of the nicer things that any bride and groom would normally have on their wedding day. Their three children Carla, Andrew and Narda participated in the ceremony and five of their six grandchildren were there on the day. The prize included the couple’s wedding breakfast, cake, photography, pre-wedding day treatments, flower arrangements, wedding decor, the services of a celebrant to perform the ceremony, wedding planning, and a lolly buffet. Wedding coordinator, Cari Hughes, said she was very grateful to all the suppliers who participated in the event. “What a great introduction for us to the wedding scene and what a deserving local couple to have won the giveaway,” said Cari. Keeping The Scenic Rim Scenic
Over 40 members of the public and Scenic Rim Quarry Action Group members have climbed Mount Mahomet in Kerry together to protest the Queensland State Government’s Key Resource Areas plan. Key Resource Areas (KRAs) are areas selected for potential future development such as mining by the Queensland State Government, and the group fears that some of the potential sites in the Scenic Rim could harm the environment. The Scenic Rim Quarry Action group arranged the walk on 1st September so the 46 people present could see the Cryna, Erin View and Markwell Creek sites which may be affected if development progressed. If the KRAs are developed, the Erin View basalt quarry will be on the edge of veterinarian and Quarry Action Group’s president Dr Colleen Buckley’s family property, significantly devaluing the land and placing it in the KRA’s buffer zone between the quarry and normal land. She has spoken with the Scenic
Walkers protested the State Government’s Key Resource Areas plan
Rim Council and State Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause, neither of which she said made their position clear on if they would oppose the KRAs. “I really hope they (the state government) will consider the impact of the proposed quarry in the district and I would hope they don’t base their decision on desktop analysis not backed up by real
figures or research,” Dr Buckley said. Neighbouring cattle farmer Daphne Harlen said that if the quarry went ahead, trucks would drive through her property, making it harder for her and her husband Peter to muster their cattle. Other concerns the group has include increased traffic, noise and dust spoiling the area.
Deputy Mayor Virginia West said that the Scenic Rim Regional Council had made a submission to the state government during the State Planning Policy’s drafting, speaking out against the lack of community consultation about the KRAs, and had previously rejected quarry applications. “We are doing our best to work with the state government,” she said. “They know how we feel as a council.” The council’s full submission is available to read on the Scenic Rim Council’s website. State Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said that the KRAs were in order to determine the resources such as sand, gravel and rock in the sites could be used in the future. “Any application for those resources to be extracted has to be approved by local government (the council),” he said. Dr Buckley hopes to receive a confirmation about the Erin View site’s future by the end of September.

Community Support Crucial for New Bank The
campaign to bring the
Canungra
and
District Community Bank
to town is gaining momentum every day
By Keith Cogzell Most residents have seen the information stalls around town over the past month seeking support for a full service bank in town. The local business community was quick to recognise the benefits it will bring and most businesses have now indicated they will be using it when it opens. Our campaign is currently in the Pledge phase. Bendigo Bank needs confirmation from a cross section of the Canungra and district community of their support. This can be done in two ways: by indicating the intention to open an account or transfer accounts over when the Canungra branch opens, and more importantly, by pledging to buy shares in the new bank. Bendigo Community banks are actually owned by local shareholders but the banks are operated by Bendigo Bank under its full banking licence. There are over 300 Bendigo Community Banks
Canungra and District Community Bank supporters at the Canungra Show
across Australia and new ones open at the rate of one a week. The Canungra & District Community Bank campaign is being conducted by a steering committee comprising 20 people from the Canungra, Beechmont and Tamborine Village communities. A similar Community Bank opened in Logan Village about three years ago and it has returned
$144,000 back to community organisations in the form of grants and sponsorships. Kalbar also has a successful Community Bank. Based on what has happened in these similar sized communities, we know a branch in Canungra will be successful too. But our local community needs to demonstrate it does want a bank in town. First and foremost we need
around 300 pledge forms signed by local residents, businesses, clubs and associations indicating they will buy shares in the Canungra & District Community Bank. The minimum share purchase is $500 and maximum is $75,000. No money needs to be paid at the pledge stage, a prospectus will be issued before there is a call for funds next year. We have already achieved 10% of the pledges needed in just four weeks of campaigning. Information stalls will continue on Saturday mornings and at the Canungra and Beechmont markets over the next few months. We urge you to get behind the campaign, ask questions about the new branch and pledge your support. Pledge forms can be returned by post to PO Box 3, Canungra, or to Canungra Newsagency, The Canungra Times, The Outpost Cafe, Canungra RSL Services Club and Corporate and Country Accounting.

In Brief...
Stolen Property Recovered Police reported a quantity of alcohol stolen from The Outpost Cafe was recovered soon after the break-in. The break-in occured on the night of Friday 23rd August and police have spoken to several youths in relation to the break in. Historic Names For Wonglepong Roads Council is to rename two service roads in the Wonglepong area, with the selected names recognising historic connections to the district. A service road off Beaudesert-Nerang Road will be named Caningera Rd, while a similar roadway off Mundoolun Connection Rd will become Mahoney Road. The names were adopted based on submissions by the community following a period of consultation. Corporate and Community Services Committee Chair Cr Nigel Waistell said the names have links to the history of Wonglepong. “The name Caningera has significant geographical historical and cultural value within the area. It is the Aboriginal name used by the first settlers for the creek, the school and the postal address,” he said. “The Hugh Mahoney reserve is adjacent to the northern end of Mundoolun Connection Road. Hugh Mahoney was the first selector of one of the properties around the road, and his son Tom also lived on that side of the road.” New Time for Story Time Due to popular request to more closely meet the end of school, storytime at Canungra Library with Carolann will now start at 3pm. The same line up of events will continue with singing and dancing to open, followed by the reading of a story and a craft, so join us at the Canungra Library every Wednesday for some fun and games. Children up to six years are invited to come along with parents. For more information please call Canungra Library on 5543 5791 or Council on 5540 5473. Children Unsupervised Acting Officer-in Charge at Canungra Police Station, Mark McLaughlin, said police are concerned about teenagers who have been dropped off in town and left overnight without parental supervision. In some instances the teenagers, aged between 14 and 17 years, were camping illegally. Police have asked that parents know where their children are and ensure they are properly supervised.

Canungra’s History
Canungra Bowls Club Celebrates 60 Years By Brownwyne Brown
The Canungra Bowls Club will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary on 6th October 2013. The Canungra Bowls Club owes its existence to the enthusiasm of Ken Cameron, Frank Murray and Ken Reilly who, with other Canungra people were introduced to the game of bowls at Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club. Much interest grew amongst the Canungra players and Beechmont locals also took up the game so it was decided to form a club at Canungra. A great deal of voluntary labor was involved before the green became a reality. Despite the conflicting financial advice of the local bank manager at the time, the members of the club raised the finances by donating whatever they could invest. George Mahony, Ken Curtis and Jesse Daniels pulled stumps out and prepared the ground for the green.
The green opened in 1953. The club house was a tiny cottage on the property and it served until replaced by a larger building in 1966. According to historical records, Jasper Jerome was President of the men’s club and Madge Page was President of the ladies at the time of the opening. Various trophies were donated by members including the Can Tam Shield donated by Jesse Daniels and the Jerome Cup by Jasper Jerome. The piano was donated by Jasper Jerome. On Sunday 5th October 2013, the Club will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary, inviting past and present members for a lunch and a social game of bowls. We invite all past members whom we haven’t been able to contact personally to call Bronwyne on 0409 797 965 to RSVP to the event.

By Alanna Phillips Kokoda Barracks organised a community awareness session on Saturday 10th August 2013 to prepare local residents for the upcoming bushfire season. It kicked off early with rural fire brigades from Canungra, Beechmont, Lower Beechmont, Mt Tamborine, Clagiraba, Coomera Valley and Guanaba participating in a tour of the barracks to familiarise them with the base layout should they be called out to assist with a bushfire or structural fire on base. After a quick spin down the flying fox at the park, the Volunteer Community Education (VCE) team led by Bushfire Safety Officer Peta Millar-Rose manned their display in preparation to welcome participating families. There was a good turn out of local residents who attended the day. Not long after the start of the session the distinctive yellow fire engines from the surrounding brigades began to roll in - and they just kept coming! There were 15 units and about 40 fire fighters who had just returned from the base tour. The children were entertained with lots of fire safety activities, whilst the adults learned about the importance of being prepared and having a bushfire survival plan. Blazer the koala turned up to the delight of all and the sausages began marching off the BBQ as fast as they could be cooked.
The VCE team gave a presentation on the national bushfire safety theme, ‘prepare, act, survive’, including a demonstration. Later, children were given some hands on experience with a fire hose. It was such a great session that Kokoda Barracks is planning on hosting another session early in 2014. A big thank you to the rural fire brigades who are the unsung heroes when bushfires strike our communities. For further information, go to www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au or book a free “Are you Bushfire Prepared?” presentation by calling 13 74 68.

Canungra Looking Fitter Already
Canungra’s fourth 12 Week Challenge, run by local personal trainer, Steve Crooks, is making the town look fitter already with over 40 people signed up for the Challenge. For some people it is the push they needed to kick start their weight loss before summer and for others it is a good
opportunity to increase their fitness. Participants in the Challenge receive daily emails with workouts and fitness advice from Steve, as well as attending group or personal training sessions. Whatever their goal, Canungra will see more people pounding the pavement over the coming months.

By Robyn Lee On 2nd August 2013 the Canungra Uniting Church had their Annual Ladies Service. It was a terrific morning service and luncheon. The guest speaker was Rachel Mansfield who has led, and been part of, many mission trips to the Thailand Burmese border. She has a particular interest with the welfare of the Karen people who are refugees in this border region. At the end of the service a collection was taken up for the Karen Refugees and $485 was raised. A luncheon, catered for by the Canungra Ladies Fellowship, was held afterwards to give everyone the opportunity to mingle and talk with Rachel.
Lions Donate Rickshaw By Rayna Bond Tamborine Village Lions have been raising funds to purchase a rickshaw for a local Tamborine family. The Jobson’s have a 16 year old son who requires help in all aspects of life due to his disability. This is a 24 hour a day job for both parents. The request to help the family came along in May. The request was for a rickshaw to assist the family in getting around in their daily outings to the areas that have cycle ways. The Rickshaw would allow Mr Jobson to pedal Mrs Jobson and Ollie safely in the rear seat. Storage is under the seat which enables them to carry any medical supplies or equipment Ollie may require. In early August, Tamborine Village Lions was able to present the Jobson Family with the Rickshaw. The Club has already received feedback from Mr Jobson saying how much this has eased their life and their outings. If you or anyone you know in the community would benefit from help provided by Tamborine Village Lions please contact Richard Wright 0414 554 268 on or email tamborinevillagelions@live.com.

Steve Ward at Rivermill Nursery
Rivermill Nursery for Native Plants
The Canungra area is lucky to host an extensive range of Australian native flora and fauna. We have a range of environmental challenges from hot and dry weather to frost, not to mention the floods. Our local environment and back yards can suffer. If you are planning some landscaping or strive to offer shelter to local wildlife then look no further than the friendly, knowledgeable staff at the historic Rivermill Nursery. Many locals are already familiar with Mount Tamborine nurseryman Steve Ward from his many years as a stall holder at the Tamborine Showground markets selling endemic native plants. Steve has supplied many local land care groups over the years and specialises in species specific to this area. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience propagating, growing and planting local plants. Steve would be happy to guide and advise you on how to attract local birds and butterflies, provide shelter for wildlife and include strategies to feed native animals using native species.
If you have ever thought about growing your own rainforest on your property or growing a hedge to create a screen, then staff at the Rivemill can assist you. You can ask advice about fast growing species perfect to your needs. The Rivermill Nursery specialises in native tube stock which is both manageable and economical at just $2.50 a plant. This makes these plants ideal for larger planting projects as well as an affordable option for the back yard. The Rivermill Nursery not only boasts the best range of natives and advice on the Gold Coast but also offers a range of exotic landscaping plants as well as a fantastic range of fruit trees to suit your needs. You will also find a huge range of ceramic pots, statues and garden supplies making the Rivermill a perfect one stop shop for all your gardening projects! From My Window...
A Job Well Done This month we had two of the biggest social events in town within two weeks of each other - the Rodeo and the Show. After wet weather made the Rodeo arena unsafe, the Show Committee decided to postpone the Rodeo until 10th August, leaving themselves only two weeks before they had to be ready for the Show. The decision proved to be a sound one. The weather for the Rodeo was perfect and the event ran smoothly, with the best crowd they have had for several years. Similarly, the Show went without a hitch and was enjoyed by everyone who attended. The really amazing thing about these two events is that they were organised by a small band of volunteers, some of whom have been in those roles for several years. It is an incredible job to organise these events and everyone involved should be congratulated on a job well done. Country shows and rodeos are an integral part of Australia’s social scene and without these volunteers we would lose a vital part of our heritage.

SWIM CLUB AGMS
The AGM for the Canungra Junior Swim Club will be on Wednesday 11th September at the Canungra RSL. It is important that parents attend to become aware of the arrangements for the swimming season and to allow the club to move forward with some major decisions. The Masters Swim Club AGM will be held on Wednesday 18th September at the Canungra RSL. All those interested in becoming a Masters swimmer and participating in regular training should attend. The club is only new and needs your support to remain viable. You don’t need to be a fantastic swimmer. It is all about fun, fitness and friendship. For more information on both AGMs, contact Alanna Phillips on 0409 752 997 or alanna651@bigpond.com.

Thank You We would like to thank the Caungra Bowls Club and particularly Shane Stevenson, Peter and Ray Hickson and John Harrison for the work they did for Adina Reed’s fundraiser at the Bowls Club on Friday 9th August. We would also like to thank Marj Pholi and Linda Hinchcliffe for their generous product donations for raffles. The money raised will help Adina realise her dream of competing in Trials in Europe.

Dear Keer, Thank you so much for publishing Andrew Rees’ amazing photos.. “Willy” is absolutely wonderful. How loing did he have to sit still to capture “Willy” so beautifully on the wire? Thank you Andrew and thanks to Canungra Times Yvonne Staples
Elisha Bogie and Adina Reed Fundraiser at Rodeo Dear Editor, On 24th August the generous Canungra Show Society allowed me to set up a fundraising barbeque for Cancer Research and Treatment at the Canungra Rodeo. Tony from Foodworks donated a lot of supplies to get us started – thank you Tony and the wonderful members of Canungra Show Society for your support. We managed to raise $770 that day toward my Conquer Cancer appeal and I could not have done this without the support of my father, Peter Teveluwe and our helpers: Tattoo Mick, Lauren Phillips, Loz Brown and Dale Mahony. I am so proud to have grown up in such a wonderful, altruistic community who is always willing to lend a hand. I am, and will always be a Canungra girl at heart.
Editor’s Note: Our resident bird expert, Mel Whitby, informed me that the bird in that photo was actually a Grey Fantail and not a Willie Wagtail. Had us all fooled thank for setting us straight, Mel!

Swimming Season in Canungra Kicks Off By Alanna Phillips The summer season is about to arrive and with it, the opening of the Canungra Pool. This year the event calendar is looking even bigger and better than before. The pool has undergone some major works with the pebblecrete pool surround being replaced with smooth concrete. It is anticipated that the pool will open on Saturday 21st September, pending completion of returfing of the grassed areas beside the pool surround. Squad and Lessons Once the pool is open, lessons and squad will commence on a demand basis. Enquiries can be made on 1300 733 053 or canungra@scenicrimpools.com.au. Lessons include: • Babies • Learn to swim • Transition to squad • Swimmers with disabilities • Adult learn to swim Squad will be conducted as follows: • Senior and adult squad – 5:30 to 7:00 am Mon-Fri; • Junior squad – 6:00 to 7:00 am Mon-Fri; • Junior squad – 3:30 to 4:30 pm (except Thu) • Senior squad – 4:30 to 6:00 pm (except Thu) Squad costs $10 per session for non-club members with multiple session discounts. For Club members it is $5 per session, again with multiple session discounts. The coaches are qualifying Bronze level coaches who should have the full qualification prior to the start of the season. Water Aerobics This year the pool is planning on hosting water aerobics. Since a number of people in town are interested in doing the course, there should be plenty of opportunities for aerobic classes.
Junior and Masters Swim Clubs The Junior Club AGM will be held at the Canungra RSL on Wednesday 11th September at 6.00pm. Registration papers for the club will be held at the pool kiosk. A BBQ and pool party sign on will also be held on Sunday 29th September between 10.00am and 2.00pm. This year club fees will be $110 dollars for competitive swimmers and all will receive a club cap as part of their registration. Club togs, bags and shirts will also be available for purchase. Junior club nights will commence on Thursday 10th October at 5:30 pm. The under 7s are registered free this year with Swimming Queensland and families can also apply for a “Get Started” voucher from the council to have their fees for the season paid (*conditions apply). Masters swimming will kick off with an AGM on the 18th September at the RSL. Club night will be Wednesday’s from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. The Saturday or Sunday session times will be decided at the AGM. There will be great training programs, opportunities for new friendships and some fun activities both inside and outside the pool. The club recently purchased float belts for deep water running so those with injuries are welcome.
Fundraisers The major fundraising activities for the club have changed a little this year. The club has been assisting the community markets by providing a BBQ bimonthly and this is planned to continue. Also on the agenda is: • 02 Nov 13 – Twilight Glow Biathlon • 18 Jan 14 – Fun Day and Movie Night • 01 Mar 14 – Swimming Carnival • An outlet shopping tour • Pie drive Once again we look forward to a great relationship with FoodWorks who were a major sponsor last year. We also thank the Scenic Rim Shire Council for two grants with which we bought training gear and a computer, and recently, the Canungra Op Shop donated money to allow us to build a shed at the pool. Key dates to remember: • 21 Sep – Canungra pool opens • 29 Sep – Pool party and sign on 10-2 pm • 10 Oct – First Junior Club night and additional sign on • 02 Nov – Twilight glow biathlon • 12 Dec – Christmas break-up • 18 Jan 14 – Scenic Rim Fun Day • 01 Mar 14 – Scenic Rim Spectacular For enquiries please contact Alanna Phillips on 0409 752 997 or alanna651@bigpond.com or canungra.swimming@gmail.com.

AWL Pets of the Month Princess (19089): Princess is a gorgeous girl. She would love nothing more then to be included in family daily activities. She loves pats and could benefit from some more training too. Princess is a two year old American Staffy. She is $240 and is already desexed, microschipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated. Grace (18353) and Spirit (): This sweet, cuddly girl came to the shelter with Spirit, having been handed in to the Ipswich Pound. Despite previous unhappy circumstances ,they are affectionate cats, who need to be rehomed together . Grace and Spirit are two years old and are $120 each. They are already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated.
Spice (19257): Spice is full of life and needs a home where her new owners will set consistent rules and boundaries to live by. She’d be best suited to owners who are willing to go to obedience classes until she graduates a well behaved pooch. She’s social and excitable but hasn’t quite learnt how to channel her energy. Spice is an Australian Kelpie - Siberian Husky cross. She is approximately two years old. She is $240 and is already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated.
Nature’s Gems
Australasian Gannet (Morus serrator) By Melissa Whitby Australia is home to a vast array of bird species that live in a variety of habitats. Many of the bird species that I write about are land-based. However, it is important to remember the many seabird species that grace the coastlines of Australia. One such bird is the Australasian Gannet. Adult Australasian Gannets can be readily identified by their distinctive feather colours. The back of the head and neck is a yellowish buff with a white body and black tips to the wings and tail. Immature birds are more mottled in appearance and have less yellow on the back of the head. Similar species to the Australasian Gannet include the Cape Gannet and Masked Booby. The Cape Gannet is practically identical to the Australasian Gannet except for the tail being more black and a longer dark line down the throat. One of the most amazing sights of nature is to watch this bird species on a fishing foray. The Australasian Gannet can be seen fishing in companies or singly. Their preferred method of fishing is to plunge into the sea, wings back and bills pointed downwards. This bird seldom comes ashore unless to breed.
The breeding season for the Australasian Gannet in Australia usually extends from July to February. This bird species also breeds in New Zealand. I was lucky to encounter the Australasian Gannet nesting at Muriwai, in the North Island of New Zealand. The photo that accompanies this article was taken there of a pair of birds that were building their nest. These birds nest in communal colonies. It is a sight that I would never forget and it would open my eyes to having more of an appreciation for seabird species. This beautiful bird has a range that extends to New Zealand and all the Australian States and Territories except the Northern Territory. Migrant birds from New Zealand also visit Australia. The Australasian Gannet is a relatively common seabird, however, this common status should not be treated lightly as these beautiful birds could suffer in years to come if their fish food stocks are depleted or breeding sites not protected. It is a timely reminder that protecting wildlife species before they become endangered will be a huge benefit to the future of such amazing creatures.

Big October Ride 2013
Border Collies Jorja and Punter
Top Dogs at EKKA
Boyland dog trainer, Lisa Kaddatz and her dogs, Punter and Jorja took out top places in Dog Agility and Jumping at the EKKA on Saturday 10th August 2013. Five year old blue merle Border Collie, Punter, took out first place and qualifying score in Open Jumping and third place and non-qualifying score in Masters Agility. Jorja, a seven year old black and white Border Collie, placed first and qualifying score in both Open Agility and Masters Agility. Dog Agility is based on equine show jumping where the handler runs and guides the dog (off lead) around a course consisting of various obstacles, including jumps, seesaws, a-frames, tunnels and weave poles. Lisa said the EKKA isn’t an easy venue for a lot of dogs to compete at as the competition area is much smaller than the dogs are used to so the courses are tighter and there are a lot of added distractions. “Fortunately my dogs take it all in their stride and keep their focus purely on agility,” said Lisa..
The Dayboro Trail Riders’ 15th annual horse trail riding event the ‘Big October Ride’ is on Saturday 26th October. Last year 209 horses and riders took part in a great day of trail riding followed by an evening of entertainment. This year riders can choose from three or seven hour rides, leaving Dayboro showgrounds at 8.30am escorted by the Dayboro Police. Both rides are non-competitive and leisurely paced. Participants need to bring their own horse and riding gear. There is no age limit on riders or horses; however both need to be fit enough and competent to take part. Riders 16 years and under require a responsible adult or guardian. Riders 18 years and under must wear an approved riding helmet. It is recommended horses be shod or wear boots and wear a halter and lead rope. Strictly no stallions, rigs or dogs. With permission from the Rural Fire Brigade both Friday and Saturday evenings will be casual and relaxed around the campfire. A licensed bar will operate both nights. Catering is available across the weekend but only guaranteed if you prebook. Friday night is $6 steak burger night with desserts at $3 a serve. Vegetarian and gluten free meals can be arranged
Trail Riders Bob Ebert, Debbie McLean Finnegan, Lorraine Bailey and Ken Chater.
if booked in advance. Saturday evening entertainment kicks off at 8pm. Ride fees are $50 for visitors or $35 for TRA members. Fees cover camping, insurance, morning tea and lunch as well as Saturday night’s entertainment. If you don’t ride but wish to be part of the evening, $10 at the door will get you in. This event is looked forward to each year. Previously we’ve been host to riders from Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Yarraman, Gympie, Maryborough, Gold Coast and New South Wales. Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council 75th Annual Show What a wonderful day it was this year to celebrate such a significant event in the history of Canungra. Congratulations to the very dedicated Show Society committee and members who coordinated this event in quick succession to the rodeo only two weeks ago. It certainly was a day enjoyed by all and thank you for your hard work in organising this event. A special acknowledgement to all the past presidents and committees who have worked tirelessly over the past 75 years to ensure the Canungra Show continues to be a significant event in our town. Scenic Rim Transport A FREE bus service linking Canungra to Beaudesert and Boonah is being trialled by Scenic Rim Transport on the third Saturday of every month and Thursdays during school holidays. The trial will continue until the end of January 2014 and, if successful, the service will continue. To book contact Transport Coordinators on 5541 4176 as bookings are essential. For timetables and any further information visit www.scenicrimtransport.com. Road Works Outside Kokoda Army Base A number of residents have asked what is happening with the prolonged road works in the area. I can advise that during the construction phase of the bypass lane an unexpected water main was unearthed which meant a redesign of the project. Work has now resumed and the bulk earthworks near complete for the bypass lane. 1080 Baiting Program Council will be conducting the annual program during September as part of the management of wild dogs, foxes and pigs in rural areas. There have been a number of Biosecurity Queensland changes recently which rural landowners may not be familiar with so for more information or to participate in the program please call Council’s Pest and Animal Management Team on 5540 5444. Fire Season Approaching I encourage all residents to assess their property for fire danger as the fire season is nearly upon us. Please ensure all gutters are cleared of leaves and any combustible wood piles and vegetation are cleared from around your house. The Canungra Rural Fire Brigade and Auxillary Fire Captain are always happy to give advice if needed. Retirement Ken Josling our local police sergeant will sadly be retiring in the upcoming month. Although I know he wants to leave quietly and without any fuss, I know the community want to extend their best wishes to Ken and his family as they sit back and enjoy having Ken at home with them. Thank you Ken for your leadership and commitment to Canungra over the past 11 years and 16 years in Beaudesert before that. I know at times we haven’t all enjoyed that lecture on the side of the road but you have always had the welfare of our community at heart and we thank you for that. Contact Me I am always available to talk with residents and can be contacted on 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
This is not a time completely devoid of challenges. In fact there’s quite a lot to attend to. You have a hearty collection of juggling balls in the air to keep afloat. This is the kind of situation you thrive in. You will have to watch out for hubris. Excessive pride can be a blinding force.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
Life, love and luck, are all getting intense. Venus moves from charming idealistic Libra, into emotionally interesting Scorpio – and she takes you with her. The simplicity you value so highly goes out the window. There are complex matters to attend to. Face it. Don’t run away.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
Being gifted the opportunity to plunge headfirst into all the love you have in your heart, gives you confidence. It makes you feel proud and free. All you really ever need is the chance to share what you have to give. Once you get that chance, everything shifts gear – you change planes.
11
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
The Sun is in Virgo, shining brightly on all that you are and all that you do. The Sun brings vitality, juice and creativity to boot. Though you have all these things, be sure to keep your footing. Life is offering some complicated emotional twists and turns to keep you sharp.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Venus shifts from Libra, where she has been reinforcing all that you are comfortable with, into Scorpio, which is a place in which you aren’t quite so comfortable. Essentially life is taking you from theory to practise. The emotional realities that follow action, are showing themselves.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
Life sends both Venus and Mercury to boost your fortunes. Venus is of course, love – and Mercury is intelligence and insight. Together they have the power to shift anything that is stuck and make it move. It’s time to get on with things. Get your foundations right. Set to it.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
You are a watery Centaur at the moment. You are galloping through water rather than over a beaten track. Water is somewhat resistant to your normal freewheeling ways. It’s you who is going to have to adapt. Water is emotion, feeling. The tender side requires your attention.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
It’s time to build a home – at least in your heart, if not in bricks and mortar. Your foundations have been shifted significantly over the last couple of years. The you that has been unwrapped or uncovered, now needs to be honoured as your new and true abode. Plant yourself anew.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
There is a lot of emotional activity unfolding in the world around you. You will have to be able to deal with all sorts of different people, places and situations, as you shift your ideals into action. This is the very challenge you have been wishing upon yourself for years. Be a virtuoso.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
As the Sun goes into Virgo, so you could easily read people as pressuring you to refrain from being yourself. Try reading it differently. That which is opposing you, is offering you the chance to expand. Integrate suggestions offered. Liberate yourself by transcending your critics.

The Sun has moved into Virgo, leaving you to rest and integrate the lessons of the last year. When fields are fallow, they heal, regenerate and make themselves ready for the next round of planting. Let this time be like that. Tempting as it is to rev yourself up, do your best to resist the habit.

TCT’s Movie Review NOW YOU SEE ME
By Chloe Pickard
Rated: M. Length: 155 mins. Director: Louis Leterrier. Cast: Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo.
Now You See Me is a heist film performed by magicians rather than charismatic crooks, giving plenty of opportunities for illusions and plot twists. The Four Horsemen are previously solo magicians who have come together as a highly popular group, but magic is not the only thing they’re good at. They perform their thefts in front of hundreds, rob the undeserving and don’t keep any of the money for themselves. This quickly attracts the attention of the FBI and agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) is sent to investigate. He soon realises he’s out of his depth, but no one can see what the Horsemen are building up to.
Now You See Me is fast-moving, enigmatic film and great fun for thriller fans. Jesse Eisenberg is different from his usual neurotic roles as magician J Daniel Atlas, although the character’s smugness will remind viewers of his most famous role - Mark Zuckerberg from The Social Network. It’s nice to see Mark Ruffalo outside of The Avengers as well, even if he doesn’t do much more than run around shouting and being outwitted by the magicians. The plot has some holes, but a sequel has been confirmed, so expect to see a follow-up in 2014 that might clear things up.
Why not book yourself and a friend in to participate in a hands on cooking class using local produce and native food? Take advantage of our $20 local’s discount for our classes in September, October and November and enjoy a fabulous 2 hour cooking class followed by lunch with local wines. Canungra State School Food Garden Project By Jodie Clifford Canungra State School Green Team have grown some fantastic produce over the winter season. The vegetable gardens are managed by our fantastic groundsman, Trevor Skelton and our gardening club which consists of volunteer students. The Canungra State School Food Garden Project was established after receiving a $1,000 Coles Landcare grant in early 2010. Project Aims / Objectives Starting with two freestanding garden beds, the project aims to educate the students in regards to producing and utilising fresh, organic, healthy produce. The objectives of the project are: • Engage staff and students in growing, harvesting and preparing produce. • Increase the capacity of students and other school community members to establish and manage edible gardens. • To complement and utilise resources produced by sustainability activities undertaken at the school: worm farm composting, rain water harvesting and reduction of packaging in school lunches. • To increase environmental awareness/ activities and reduce the school’s dependency on non renewable resources.
Project Outcomes The Canungra State School Food Garden Program is a positive environmental initiative. Students will be involved from seedling species selection through garden set up, planting, maintenance, harvesting and use of produce. Produce from the Food Garden is being used in Cooking Club demonstrations and supplying the School Tuckshop. The project highlights the impact of ‘food miles’ on the environment and promotes positive aspects of growing produce locally. Produce from the Food Garden has also been entered in the Canungra Show in 2011, 2012 and 2013 with the school winning “Champion Exhibit” in the agricultural section each year. This is a fantastic result for the students, parents and staff involved and reflects their dedication to the project. The Food Garden Project has many benefits and CSS Green team continue to expand the project by installing new garden beds with an increased capacity for growing a variety of produce.
Conveyancing Tips Have You Made
a
Will Yet?
By Suzanne Roberts, Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers
Lawyers suggest everyone over the age of 18 should make a Will. None of us know exactly when we will die. Your Will allows you to leave your property, money and possessions as you desire. A Will is simply a legal declaration of a person’s wishes about their property after their death. Wills are written, these days on a word processor but occasionally, in an emergency, by hand. Your Will need not be in any particular form but you do need to comply with some formalities. For instance, you need to sign your Will in the presence of two adult witnesses each of whom actually sees you and the other witness sign. It’s sometimes necessary to prove the validity of deceased person’s Will by applying to the Supreme Court for a grant of probate. Then it is important that the deceased complied with all the formalities in making the Will so the Court can be satisfied the Will is authentic. Two important points to consider in regard to your Will are: • to whom do I want to leave my property? You can be quite specific in making these choices; and • who do I want to appoint as executor of my Will to ensure my wishes are carried out? Many testators (legal shorthand for a person making a Will) choose a trusted family member to be the executor of their Will. Others choose a trusted friend or professional, perhaps their lawyer or accountant, to fill that role. If you die without a Will your estate (legal shorthand for your property, money and possessions) will be dealt with under the laws covering intestacy. These may divide your estate amongst family, relatives or the State if you have no next of kin. Having your property carved up in this way may not be what you want. Make a Will to prevent this happening. We suggest that you should revisit your Will every two years or when some major event occurs in your life. You might want to change it if there is a death, birth, marriage or divorce in the family; purchase or sale of real estate. Your own marriage or divorce may automatically revoke your Will. Most lawyers are happy to discuss your Will for a relatively small fee. Please don’t put it off..it is just too important.

Film Focus Presents: Singing Lessons with Practice Footage! Film Focus, based in Canungra, is now offering filmed singing lessons. Singing teacher Colette has taught vocals in Scotland and Australia in music colleges and workshops. She uses Alexander Technique to help singers maximise breathing set up and correct focus points so not to strain vocal chords and enhance tone, power and performance. The beauty of this new service is that the singers take away the lesson on a USB stick, so they can practice at home and remember the lesson. Additionally, lessons are taught via a karaoke talent tent, so full performance can be assessed and showreels created. The cost is only $25 per half hour lesson and the first lesson includes the USB stick. Located only five minutes from the Canungra Hotel, spaces are filling fast for this CALL NOW to book 5543 4817 or email Colette at filmfocusyouth@gmail.com.
Storytime at Canungra Library is now starting at 3pm on Wednesday afternoons! Due to popular request to coincide with the end of school, storytime with Carolann will now start at 3pm. Children 0 - 6 years are invited to attend accompanied by an adult. The same lineup of events will continue with singing and dancing to open, followed by the reading of a story and a craft activity, so join us at the Canungra Library every Wednesday for some fun and games. The Canungra Times, September 2013
SEPTEMBER IS THE BEGINNING OF TICK SEASON!! By Chris Corcoran, Canungra Vet Surgery With the onset of warmer weather, there is a surge in the numbers of the deadly paralysis tick. The Gold Coast Hinterland region is a paralysis tick “hotspot” and our clinics treat approximately 400 cases of tick paralysis each year. This year we are expecting a “bad” tick season. Over the last six months we have seen higher than average rainfall and relatively mild winter temperatures. These factors often contribute to a higher number of active paralysis ticks in Spring and Summer. Tick paralysis causes a variety of clinical signs in animals. Early signs include ataxia, or wobbliness in back legs. There is often a change in the animal’s breathing pattern. Most owners, with hindsight, report that their pet was reluctant to eat over the 24-hour period that preceded the onset of the more obvious signs. Dogs will show an increased respiratory rate or excessive panting, while cats will often have a “grunt”. The wobbliness progresses to an inability to walk or rise. Some animals will vomit, many will cough or gag repeatedly to the extent that some owners report the animal has an obstruction in their throat. As the disease progresses, the respiration becomes more labored, and ultimately some animals will die due to complete respiratory muscle paralysis. Tick paralysis should be regarded as an emergency in animals. We have found, overwhelmingly, that delayed treatment invariably leads to prolonged recovery times, and also provides a poorer prognosis. The cornerstone of treatment is tick antiserum, which is designed to bind and neutralise the tick toxin in the bloodstream, thereby preventing any more toxin from attaching to bodily tissues. Unfortunately, toxin that is already bound to tissue receptors cannot be removed. This explains why, despite treatment, some animals unfortunately succumb to the effects of the toxin. It also explains why most animals still deteriorate slightly after treatment. Paralysis of the larynx and a reduced swallowing reflex can lead to some patients developing pneumonia that requires injectable antibiotics. Animals who continually vomit require medications to prevent ulceration and inflammation of the
SPECIAL GUEST
oesophagus. Severely affected animals may also require oxygen therapy to support their paralysed respiratory muscles. The experience we have gained from treating tick paralysis cases for over 20 years suggests that animals hospitalised for intensive monitoring and nursing care have the most favourable outcomes. Although we advise that animals in our region should be on some form of tick prevention all year round, it is particularly important to review methods of protection as Spring starts. There are a variety of products designed to reduce the risk of tick paralysis. The most common products are “top spots’ (such as Frontline) which are designed to be placed on the animals neck and repel or prevent attachment of the tick. These products should be applied fortnightly to ensure maximum protection. Tick collars are very effective and last for six or eight weeks depending on the brand. Tick rinses are available, however they only last for seven days and therefore need to be repeated regularly. At this time of the year we encourage owners to consider using at least two different methods of prevention. It is important to note that although modern products are extremely effective at reducing the risk of tick paralysis, they do not provide complete protection. We strongly advise pet owners to thoroughly search their pet at least once a day for the presence of ticks. When conducting a search, thoroughly inspect the whole body, paying particular attention to the head, muzzle, ears, neck and shoulders, which are the preferred sites for attachment of the paralysis tick. If you find a tick, we advise that you apply Tropical strength Rid or Aerogard to the tick, wait a few hours for it to die, then gently remove it. Application of Frontline to the tick will also cause a fairly rapid death. Consider having your pet shaved during Spring and Summer as it allows much easier detection of the tick. Keep your lawn short, and try to prevent your pet wandering through long grass or bush as these are tick “hot spots”. If your pet is showing any signs of tick paralysis, it is extremely important you seek veterinary attention immediately. Prompt
treatment enables a much better prognosis. Any delay in treatment invariably results in a prolonged recovery and increases the chances of an unfavourable outcome. Canungra Veterinary Surgery offers a 24 hour service, and our vets can be contacted any time of the day or night by phoning the surgery on 5543 5622. IDENTIFYING A PARALYSIS TICK There are four features that help us distinguish the paralysis tick from other ticks. COLOUR: Paralysis ticks, when engorged, are a typical blue-grey colour. LEG COLOUR: All ticks have eight legs. The middle two pairs of legs of the paralysis ticks are lighter in colour than the first and fourth pairs of legs. LEG DISTRIBUTION: The legs appear to be originating from the head or front of the body (other tick species have legs originating lower down) “MOUTH”: Paralysis ticks have an unusually long mouthpart, which is used to attach to the skin of their host.
Canungra Vet Surgery is pleased to announce our BONUS FRONTLINE OFFER to help you prepare for tick season. During the month of September we are offering 12 VIALS OF FRONTLINE PLUS FOR THE PRICE OF 10. This offer is available in all small, medium and large dog Frontline, and Frontline for cats.

DEADLINE
The deadline for the October edition of The Canungra Times is Monday 23rd September 2013. The October edition will be distributed on Friday 4th October.
By Di Ayscough, Guild President
By the time this goes to print the annual St Luke’s Dinner will have taken place and this major fund raising event will ensure the church is kept in premium condition. During the sermon last Sunday Rev’d Valerie commented how thankful we must be to our forbearers that we have such a beautiful place to worship. This is the main reason we must always strive to maintain St Luke’s. It is always great to see new faces in our congregation and we would make you feel very welcome if you would like to join us. I am sure the traditional bell ringing on Sunday morning is a reminder to many the service is about to commence. Our Wednesday morning group would also make you feel welcome for a cuppa and a chat. The proposed Car Boot Sale was to coincide with the election date, but due to the change of dates and the late announcement we will now plan to hold this early next year. Please keep your wares and I will let you know nearer the time. Enjoy God’s beauty of spring as it is about to burst upon us.

Sport Three Canungra Teams in Semi Finals By David Baker Canungra Owls have three teams competing in the semi finals starting in late August. The women’s side finished the regular season in clear second on the ladder behind Gold Coast Knights.and contested their semi final Wednesday 28th August. The Under 15 Gold Division 2 side finished the season with a five - nil win against Mudgeeraba to qualify for a semi final showdown with first place Burleigh Heads on Friday 30th August. The Under 13s Division 2 side finished the regular season on a high with a convincing win against Murwillumbah which included a cracking goal from Aiden Bell-McNee.and will take their place in the semis on 31st August. We wish all the players the best for the final series. The Under 15 Green team finished their season on 23rd August with a hard fought loss but coach John Harrison is very pleased with how the team stuck together throughout the season displaying plenty of ticker. The small sided teams finished their season on 31st August at home and also had team photos taken on the morning. It was a great day to wrap up the season. Many thanks to the Canungra Show Society for their donation of a number of free ride tickets for our Club. The recipients were very appreciative of the generous gesture by the Committee of the Canungra Show Society.
I reiterate words from last month’s column for my wish that parents could think seriously about volunteering next season for either the committee or to do the various jobs that keep the Owls going such as linemarking, coaching, refereeing and managing their childs team. Volunteers are the lifeblood of small communities such as ours. Thank you to Leonie Nicholson for taking up the task of organising trophies and awards for our presentation day. These efforts take the pressure off an often overworked committee and are greatly appreciated. A special thank you to Bec Bell-McNee for her efforts in the canteen this season as well as the many other helpers who pitched in when needed The Canungra and Districts Community Bank project is supported by the committee because of its potential benefits to all members of our community. If you wish to support this project please hand in your pledge forms or ring David 0402 255 053 for more information. I hope all the players and parents enjoyed their 2013 season of football with the Canungra Owls. The presentation day will be held on a date and venue yet to be announced. For enquiries regarding Canungra Soccer Club please call Bren on 0414 435 919 or David on 0402 255 053.

ANNUAL PONY CLUB GYMKHANA A SUCCESS By Katrina Morrow Canungra Pony club held its annual gymkhana on 18th August at the beautiful Canungra show grounds. Riders travelled from as far away as Millmerran, Moggill, Darra, Oxley and New South Wales to compete in the gymkhana. A total of 74 riders made the day a fantastic success for such a little club. The weather was on the club’s side with only one rider suffering from dehydration. This year there were some notable differences in two of the age groups. The lead line riders had 14 in total and the seniors (26 years and over) were supported by showjumpers, all adding to the diversity in the riders’ standards which is great to see. In 2012 the club wasn’t able to hold any events due to the surface upgrade of the main arena. So when organising the event for 2013 we had to make sure we returned with a bang and that’s exactly what we did - with the help of our sponsors. Our monster raffle was a huge success as always. We had just under $3500 worth of products up for grabs so nearly everyone got to take something home. Five riders from Canungra Pony Club competed in their various age groups, with the most successful/high point rider of the club going to Justin Morrow-Cleary. Justin received an embroidered rug which was kindly sponsored by KEZ RUGS of Tamborine Village. The overall high point rider of the day went to Halani Campkin, riding for Tallebudgera. Halani received a stunning trophy donated by Lisa Koppman of Tamborine Village. Overall High Point club trophy went to Nerang Pony Club. High Point age group trophies went to: • 6yrs & under – 1st Blake Goddall, Oxenford • 8yrs & under – 1st Cassie Landers-Jimboomba, 2nd Jessica Leary-Beaudesert, 3rd Shae Stubbs-Cedar Creek • 10yrs – 1st Imogon Taylor-Millmerran, 2nd Kasley Thointon-Greenbank • 10yrs to 16yrs beginners - 1st Kiara TobinCanungra, 2nd Katelyn Wright- Jimboomba • 11yrs – 1st Halani Campkin-Tallebudgera,

The winning team of riders for our “State of Origin” teams relay event was won by a team from Tallebudgera/Oxenford. Thank you again to our sponsor of this feature event for the last five years, Aussie Life Style Properties. Congratulations to all riders who competed and thank you for coming. With this event over for another year, we move on to organising our next event, show jumping on the 22nd September here at our home grounds in Canungra. Once again, without the support of our sponsors, Canungra FoodWorks, Jenny’s Western Products, Cetnaj, Hinterland Driveways and Landscaping, Canungra Hotel, Prydes Feeds, Informed Conveyancing, Sarabah Rugs and Horseland - Nerang, running big events like this would be near impossible. For more information about Canungra Pony Club please contact 0400 436 867 or view our Facebook page at Canungra Hack and Pony Club (new page).
