Canungra Show Goes On, Despite the Rain

Heavy rainfall wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of showgoers at Canungra on Saturday 23rd August. Although competitor numbers were affected by the wet weather, all events continued. The crowd enjoyed the show jumping, wood chopping, cattle judging and side show alley with a great variety of carnival rides for all ages. Canungra Show Society’s Publicity Officer, Lee McKenzie McKinnon said the 76th Canungra Show was a hit with families who came from near and far. “The rain may have kept some people away and that was a shame,” he said, “however, the show must go on and it sure did.” “All of the performers from around the grounds entertained the crowds and there were no lines for the rides which meant the kids never got bored.” The roving entertainers were a highlight. The multitalented Sacred Circus stilt walkers managed to walk around the rain soaked grounds and also performed a ‘Fire and Ice’ show after dark. Another of the roving entertainers, the Bubble Man, became the Pied Piper of the day as children followed his segway across the grounds. Canungra Show Society President, David Wilson said the support the community was a major factor in the continuation of the Show. “Thank you to all our volunteers who made this year’s show possible,” he said. “Without their tireless efforts and the extraordinary generosity from sponsors, shows like Canungra would not be possible. Continued support from exhibitors, who this year made exceptional efforts in the wet weather ensured there was something for everyone who came to this year’s Canungra Show.” Results and more photos, pages 20, 21.

Spring Has Sprung!

Keen gardener, Wayne Perry, was happy to see a bit of rain return along with the warmer weather this month. Wayne enjoys his garden and dubbed this lettuce, ‘Think Big’. He says the lettuce is living proof you can grow big vegetables in Canungra! The name didn’t stop it finding a new home, however - ‘Think Big’ went to one of the popular cafes in town! September is a busy month for gardeners across South East Queensland and Canungra, with its fertile soil and temperate climate is no exception. If you haven’t already gotten your vegetable garden ready to plant, now is the time! It is a good idea to plant early, as the middle of summer can be a punishing time for plants, so make the most of the relatively mild conditions now for a wide variety of vegetable crops.

Plant Now: •

Tomatoes, eggplant, capsicums, tamarillo, cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, rockmelons, carrots, lettuce, radishes, beetroot, silverbeet, beans. • If you still have space, begin sowings of heat lovers like rosella, okra, snakebeans and sweetcorn. When planning your vegetable garden, take into account your ability to keep the water up to the garden. Most vegetables need a constant supply of water to do well. With the weather warming up, pests will also become active. Although there are a lot of commercial pesticides on the market, some natural, some not so natural, it is also possible to make your own ‘pest off’ spray. Canungra’s Brush with World Class Athletes By Alanna Phillips

On Friday 22nd August, Kasey Wilson, Erynn Phillips and their mums, braved the wet weather to attend a finals session at the PAN PACS. The revamp of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre was amazing and the grand stands, while wet, provided a sensational view of the pool. After watching Cate and Bronte Campbell clean up in

the women’s 100m freestyle, the girls eagerly anticipated the final of the men’s 100m freestyle. Cameron McEvoy came first and James Magnussen third. As the families were leaving, Erynn whistfully stated, “I would give anything to get a photo with James Magnussen”. Low and behold, who did they bump into on the way out? Fresh off the podium was James, flowers in hand, talking over the barrier to a friend about

hearing his mum in the audience. Jodie asked if the girls could have a photo and Erynn’s wish was fulfilled! It was truly a thrilling evening. Canungra’s summer swimming season is about to commence and Canungra pool opens on 20th September. For enquiries about Canungra Swim Club call Amanda Thorogood on 0490 114 832 and Masters’ swimming call Alanna Phillips on 0409 752 997.

Rugby League Carnival Success

Canungra State School fielded a Year 4 rugby league team in a carnival at Coomera on Wednesday 27th August, coached by Steve Moriarty. It was the first time the team had played together and also the first time Canungra has had a girl play for a rugby league team in an interschool sports carnival. Brianna Irvine eagerly took part in the carnival and enjoyed playing. The team played four games and won all four. Players were tired but very happy with the result afterwards. All games were played with great sportsmanship on the day.

Local Lad is a World Champion in the Making By Peter Turner

Sixteen year old Corey Turner has been ripping up the European Motorcycle Circuits on his 2014 FTR Moto2 this year. Corey is the younger brother of local hairdresser, Shelby Turner. Their father Neil set about pitting Corey against the world’s best two years ago. To give his son the best opportunity, Neil and Corey relocated to Spain. They live the life of gypsies in a race truck and caravan, driving from one end of Spain to the other to compete in the nine races of the championship. Corey races in the Spanish CEV Repsol International Championship on a 600cc Grand Prix Machine. He is the youngest rider in the field of 40 moto2 competitors from around the world. When Corey is not reaching speeds of 275km/h, he is training with his personal fitness instructor and riding on circuits with his riding coach. Corey also competes on a Honda 450 Supermotard

and won the 2014 Valencia regional round. Living in a foreign country is difficult and leaving family and friends behind was a tough decision for the father and son team. Corey’s talent, determination and his ‘never say never’ attitude has placed him top 17 in his first moto2 season.

Corey has three more rounds until the end of the season where his goal is to finish in the top 15 of the leaderboard. He will compete in a few more events and then time for a Christmas break before it starts over again. You can follow Corey’s progress on Facebook ‘Corey Turner #52’.

In Brief:

ATM Stolen

The ATM was stolen from the Outpost Cafe in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday 29th August. The thieves damaged the door and removed the ATM, however the old saying that ‘crime doesn’t pay’ proved to be true. The ATM was located soon after the crime, dumped between Jerome Street and Tamborine Mountain Road (known locally as ‘The Goat Track’). The thieves hadn’t managed to open the ATM (which contained very little cash anyway) so their efforts proved to be in vain. Outpost Cafe owner, Andrew Covino said the break in has caused a lot of inconvenience to staff, customers and users of the ATM. Police are continuing to investigate.

Op Shop Volunteers’ Morning Tea

The volunteers from the Canungra Op Shop recently caught up for morning tea. It’s normally hard to get us all in one place at the same time! Thanks to our volunteers, we manage to select from peoples’ unwanted items a great selection of clothing, shoes, books and household items. Are you getting the urge to do ’spring cleaning?’ Visit our Facebook page and read the article “Op Shop Do’s and Don’ts”. Because most of our volunteers are older people, the time and care you take to follow these suggestions helps them to enjoy the work they do much more. Canungra Op Shop is run by volunteers and divides its profits between local and overseas charities and community organisations.

New Dance School for Canungra

HAMMA GYM

By Alanna Phillips

A new dance school called Inspire Studios Australia has set up within the Canungra School of Arts Hall on Monday nights. Ashley Cosgrove, a talented and entrepreneurial 19 year old, has taken a leap into the world of business and commenced dance lessons. At the moment Ashley is offering Jazz fitness and Hip Hop classes, but if the interest is there she will branch into classical ballet, dance-stretch fitness classes for adults and perhaps even tap dancing. The girls who attended the first night laughed and danced, having a marvellous time in a stress free environment. The music is funky, the dance moves zany and everyone who attended really enjoyed themselves (even me!). Dance classes are fixed at $12 and everyone stretches and dances for a full hour, so it is very good value for money. Classes are held at 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Monday nights. If you are interested in a class that is currently not offered, please call Ashley to see if she can accommodate your wish. Ashley can be contacted on 0435 871 026.

Applications Now Open For 2015 Studio Artists

With planning for 2015 already underway, Studios of the Scenic Rim is proving to be one of South East Queensland’s most popular celebrations of the arts. Studios of the Scenic Rim gives the public the opportunity to gain insight into the working life of some of the region’s unique artists, who draw their inspiration from the natural beauty and warmth of the communities in which they live and work. From very humble beginnings with only 15 artists participating in the event held over a single weekend, the program now boasts a month-long celebration of over 130 artists. The majority of participants over the years have been visual artists, but creative talent across all media including musicians, writers, film-makers and dancers and all genres are encouraged to apply. Wineries, cafes and accommodation venues make perfect places to host artists-in-residence, so any artists without a studio of their own are encouraged to consider this option. As with recent years, May is the month for the 2015 Open Studio program and

Tamlyn Geiger’s Red Door Studio

the areas will once again be Lost World Valley, with its ever-popular Arts in the Olives Festival, Tamborine Mountain, Boonah and district, Canungra, Beechmont and Beaudesert. Many artists have regularly participated in the program since its inception in 2008, however new artists are encouraged to apply. Application packs are

now available from Council’s Customer Service Centres at Boonah, Tamborine Mountain and Beaudesert, at Cultural Centres at both Beaudesert and Boonah, or by emailing thecentre@scenicrim.qld. gov.au. Applications close 5pm 13th October 2014. For more information visit www. liveatthecentre.com.au.

Business Awards Nominations Closing

The Mayor, John Brent, is reminding Scenic Rim businesses to complete their nominations for this year’s Business Excellence Awards before the closing date of 12th September. Following the closure of the Public Nominations period on Friday 29th August, the Mayor is urging nominated businesses to follow through with the application process. “While being nominated by a member of the public for their efforts is a great achievement, we are urging business operators to take that next step and complete an awards application,” the Mayor said. “The awards application process is not only an opportunity for selfreflection but, importantly, these applications are used by the judging panel to review the nominees and select the category finalists and, ultimately, the winners. “Previous awards night attendees have said the whole experience is very positive and businesses can only gain from participating. Attending the awards evening also provides a fantastic night out with the opportunity to network locally. Previous award winners from Canungra include Bean In?, Canungra FoodWorks and Local Horse Magazine. More details are available on Council’s website or by calling 5540 5314.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

Harvest Festival At The Ekka

Council this year partnered with our neighbouring rural councils; Lockyer Valley and Southern Downs councils to have a stand at the EKKA to promote our agricultural and tourism assets. It’s been a very busy fortnight with all councillors, the Mayor and CEO working alongside our hugely creative staff from the Community and Culture department. The stand looked sensational and during my stint on the stand there was a steady stream of interested visitors keen to know more about what we have to offer in the Scenic Rim. Even some Canungra “locals.”

Drought Declaration

This very welcome announcement came during EKKA week when we as Queenslanders celebrate all things agricultural, as the declaration area was extended to include Scenic Rim and the rest of South East Queensland. Although rain is forecast I certainly encourage our primary producers to investigate what options are available under the State’s Relief Assistance Scheme.

Canungra Show

The Show Society members and all the volunteers hosted a very successful 76th Show despite the challenging weather on the day. Thank you to you all for the hard work you put in and those who attended had a most enjoyable day with sensational fireworks at dusk followed by our local band The Point O Five ,who have a strong following. Certainly a great day for us all.

Swooping Season Sets In From the Australian Veterinary Association

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Time Out ... Have you ever felt so under pressure that you don’t think you have time to relax? In the short term that can be fine, in the longer term it does you no good, mentally or physically. Today we can get caught up in all sorts of priorities: work, family, friends, chasing a dollar and other things we feel we ‘have’ to do. But in the end, the only thing that counts is the relationships you have with people around you. If you reach the point where you are too busy to have a coffee (or a beer) with a friend, or dinner with your family, then maybe it’s time to ask - do I have the right balance in my life? Being busy suits some people (myself included), but it can also fracture neglected relationships and lead to fatigue and health problems. Do what makes you happy and what makes you feel useful. But don’t forget what’s really important in your life. Make that your priority.

Spring is high season for swooping magpie attacks and the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is warning people to take precautions around magpie nesting sites. Australian magpies are highly protective of their eggs, nest and young and will often swoop at unsuspecting passers-by if they feel threatened. Dr Robert Johnson said some magpies can become aggressive during breeding season, from late August to early October. “Fast moving objects such as people. bikes and anyone who moves directly towards their nests are perceived as threats and are likely to be swooped. Dog walkers and toddlers in prams are also a common target. “Tolerance is the best policy. We need to appreciate that some magpies will defend their territory from intruders because of a natural instinct to protect their offspring. “Other native birds that are also common culprits include butcher birds, kookaburras and plovers, but even

invasive species like Indian Mynas can attack at this time of year,” he said. “Don’t try and scare off the bird. Wildlife is protected and sometimes this action can lead to a more serious and sustained attack. “Think about using different pathways because moving the bird is not an option.” Other tips include: • Wear a hat or carry a stick or umbrella which can be raised to fend off serious attacks. • Cyclists should wear a helmet, dismount and walk through the area. • Draw a pair of eyes and attach to the back of hats and helmets, as birds may be less likely to attack if they think you are watching them. • Don’t interfere with or throw stones at birds. This may give them more reason to see humans as a threat and lead to increased swooping behaviour. “We’re lucky to live in a country where we share our suburbs with such amazing birds, so we simply need to find a way to live in harmony,” Dr Johnson said.

Scholarships To Support Women

More women could be on building sites or operating heavy machinery, with scholarships giving them the right qualifications to move into traditionally male dominated industries. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said the Queensland Government’s Supporting Women Scholarships applications for the 2015 academic year would help further learning and career opportunities for local women. “The Supporting Women’s Scholarships offer women of all ages and backgrounds up to $20,000 to pursue study or training. “The scholarship can be used for a variety of study-related expenses such as fees, textbooks and course materials. “I encourage local women to apply, whether they are leaving school, returning to the workforce or changing career.” Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said a highly skilled and motivated workforce was important for Queensland to build a stronger economy. “Supporting Women Scholarships aim to increase the role of women in agricultural and environmental studies, architecture and building, engineering, earth sciences and information technology,” Mr Langbroek said. “Queensland needs a highly skilled and motivated workforce to build a stronger economy, and increasing women’s participation rates across our workforce will help us achieve that goal.” Recipients are provided up to $5,000 each year (for full time study) for vocational education and training, undergraduate degrees and post graduate qualifications. Applications for the 2015 academic year opened on 11th August 2014 and close on 10th October 2014. TCT’s Book Review

Well Being

Back of Beyond

With Clancy Beck

Reviewed by Keer Moriarty

Force of Habits

Much of our day is unthinking routine and habitual behaviours. Like brushing teeth or having a shower - you don’t plan or think about it. It’s a habit. We are what we do, over and over again, and habits both good and bad, can define our lives. Our brains seek comfort in ritual and routine, but they also seek reward which is a problem in our world of convenience, marketing, kilojoulerich foods, and technological development - all encouraging bad habits. Ever bought the bucket of popcorn when you weren’t even hungry? Or spent half hour checking your likes on Facebook instead of working out? A habit consists of a cue, a routine and a reward. Teeth brushing’s cue: furry teeth, the routine: brushing, the reward: minty freshness. A behaviour only truly locks in once your brain starts to anticipate the reward. Then it craves the behaviour in order to get that reward. If you want to get fit or lose weight focus on the endorphin hit and sense of achievement you’ll feel afterwards. Do it enough and you’ll start to crave those feelings. If a habit is easy and rewards us quickly, we adopt it quickly. If it requires work, our brains start to protest. The solution is to alter your environment in ways that cue healthy behaviours and disrupt unhealthy ones. Got that 3pm slump? Rather than coffee and chocolate, go for a brisk walk, and enjoy the energy lift you receive. Stock your fridge with healthy food, close the Facebook tab, pack your gym gear the night before, plan your meals the day before, arrange a time with a trainer or friend to exercise. Good habits eliminate decision-making, which is often the time when our will-power fails us. We are what we do!

Over weight or Unfit?

Written By: by Freda Marnie Nicholls. Published by Allen & Unwin.

Back of Beyond is Freda Marnie Nicholls’ second biographical novel, the first being the story of her sister, Zelie Bullen in Love, Sweat and Tears. In Back of Beyond, Freda tells the story of Hugh Tindall, an ordinary man who grew up in outback Queensland last century. During his childhood, Hugh lived in conditions that we would consider to be third world today. A dirt floor, no running water, no electricity and working hard on his parent’s farm while studying by correspondence and the School of the Air. It is almost inconceiveable to think that within one lifetime someone could see so many changes in the

world - but Hugh certainly lived through some extraordinary times. The story continues through Hugh’s working life, marriage and his retirement, but it doesn’t feel like Freda has skimmed over his life, or that the story has been rushed through. If you like listening to stories from older people in the community, you will enjoy Back of Beyond. Hugh’s voice is captured wonderfully by Freda and I felt that I was listening to him, rather than reading a novel written by another person. A great read and a great novel of Australian history and a life lived to the full.

School Happenings - Canungra State School Rugby League

The School’s rugby league team travelled to Pacific Pines for a match against Jubilee Primary School on Thursday 21st August. The team struggled early against the bigger Jubilee team and were behind 20-4 at half time. However, Canungra dominated the second half of the match to eventually go down 26-16. Coach Steve Moriarty said the boys are to be commended for their sportsmanship and spirit and are looking forward to a return match in a couple of weeks’ time. The team would especially like to thank all the parents who drove them to the match and supported them.

Gold Coast Regional Swimming Championships

The Gold Coast Regional Swimming Championships were held on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August. Erynn Phillips (11) swam in 10 events over the weekend, gaining personal best times in five of these events. She missed out on qualifying times for the Queensland short course championships in four events by less than 0.5 of a second. This means that she has qualified for the Queensland long course championships in November in at least five events. Erynn’s continuing improvement can be attributed to her wonderful coach at Scenic Rim Swimming Club, Jody Hottes. Scenic Rim are planning a big season with some fantastic events. If anyone is keen to start swimming now, they can contact the Swim Faculty on 0488 887 946.

Gold Coast North District Trials

Several students competed on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th August at the Gold Coast North District Trials. The top four placed athletes go on to represent the District. Hayden Irvine and Saxon Matena were selected to represent the Gold Coast North District at the South Coast Regional Trials on 26th August. Saxon was placed 1st in 10 years boys’ high jump with a jump of 1.29m. Qualifying was 1.12m. Hayden was placed 4th in the 12 years boys’ discus with a throw of 25.81m (PB). Qualifying was 23.00m. This is an outstanding effort. Their training will continue and we look forward to seeing how they go at the next level. Well done boys. The other students who competed also did exceptionally well. This is a tough and strict trial. The school can only send students who have qualified and on the day they do not measure anything under qualifying. Green Team News

AWL Pets of the Month

Meet Sunkist! She is a happy friendly lady who is looking for a home where she could have a doggy friend for some company.

By Jodie Clifford, Canungra State School Green Team greenteamcss@gmail.com

Sunkist is a four year old American Staffy cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She has a lovely nature and would benefit form a home with some company and a bit of attention and training. She is vaccinated, desexed and microchipped and is $250.

Gardening Club

The recent rain was welcomed by our water tanks and vegie garden alike! Our school vegetable garden beds are very productive and the Green Team has recently begun selling excess produce on a Tuesday morning after parade – thanks to Fiona Williams for hosting our Green AS stall! Cute ‘carrot’ shaped reuseable bags are also available for sale thanks to a generous donation from Scenic Rim Regional Council. The response has been overwhelming with the healthy, seasonal mix of vegies and herbs selling out most weeks. All proceeds go back into buying materials, seeds and seedlings for the Gardening Club. The Gardening Club also entered produce into the Canungra Show with our prize winning vegies again making the Green Team proud!

Canungra Creek Restoration Project

CSS has successfully undertaken creek restoration continuously for the past eight years. The longevitiy and success of the project is attributed to the many dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who have participated and are eager to have a positive impact on our local waterway. The next phase of works will include supplementary planting of some sections of the creek directly adjacent to the waterline. An exciting development is the complimentary restoration works being undertaken upstream at the showgrounds and future plans for weed management and revegetation adjacent to Moriarty Park sporting complex. These works will assist in reducing downstream weed impacts and sediment control. Our project is becoming a regional project and the opportunities to restore this important riparian rainforest are very real. Imagine a lush rainforest buffering our precious waterway and providing increased habitat and biodiversity values whilst providing a natural environment in which we can learn and enjoy passive recreation such as birdwatching, fishing and swimming. The future is exciting!

Cazz is a very smoochy girl, she would love a home where she is the only cat and can be cherished by her human friends. Cazz is a five year old tortiseshell who is only $99. She is vaccinated, desexed, wormed and microchipped. She is one of several cats featured on a video on the AWL web site - find her profile (animal ID 26028) on the site to watch the video.

Canungra Creek resoration has been undertaken for the past eight years

Hershey is a cute little Cockatiel cross who would be good as an aviary bird or, if you would love to have a bird that will sit on your shoulder and walk around with - he will need some training. Hershey is $50. To meet Sunkist, Cazz, Hershey or other cats, dogs, chickens, guinea pigs are more available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

Your Pet Looks To You For Dental Care By Chris Corcoran, Canungra Veterinary Surgery

Pets and horses can’t brush their own teeth, but just like people, dogs, cats and horses are at risk of dental problems that can cause pain and serious health issues. Your best friend is depending on you for dental care to stay healthy and happy.

Causes of periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is caused by an accumulation of plaque. Plaque is a colourless film that contains large amounts of potentially harmful bacteria. If left unchecked, built-up plaque can cause infection, destroying your pet’s gums and the tissue and bone that support the teeth. Preventive oral care can reduce plaque and help maintain proper oral health.

Signs of periodontal disease

Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian if your pet shows any of these warning signs: bad breath, yellowbrown crust on teeth, red or bleeding gums, change in chewing or eating habits, tooth loss, change in behaviour, abnormal drooling. In horses, this list may also include: weight loss from improper chewing of food and poor food conversion; pain on the bit and throwing of the head; predisposition to colic.

Contributing factors

Poor Oral Hygiene Ignoring the condition of your pet’s mouth can lead to periodontal disease, tooth loss and other serious health problems. Breed Periodontal disease is more common in smaller breeds of dogs and certain breeds of cats.

Age Dental disease is more common as pets get older

Healthy mouth, healthy body

Proper oral care isn’t just good for the mouth – it’s good for the whole body, too. Poor dental health, on the other hand, can put the health of your pet’s body organs at risk. • Plaque builds up on a pet’s teeth. • Bacteria in the plaque irritate the pet’s gums. • The irritated gums bleed, allowing bacteria from the plaque to enter the bloodstream. • Bacteria in the bloodstream travel throughout the body, and can negatively impact vital organs. Emerging science suggests a strong link between good oral health and heart health. Pets with poorly maintained teeth and gums risk experiencing several other serious health problems: painful dental infections; tooth loss; a taxed immune system, which limits a pet’s ability to fight disease and infection

Your Vet is your animal’s dentist

Just as people should have regular dental checkups, your animal needs regular dental care by your veterinarian. Dental Exams Every regular examination in our surgeries includes a thorough dental exam. We’ll also recommend a home care plan to help you keep your pet healthy. If we find disease, we will recommend a treatment plan. Professional Dental Cleaning Part of your pet’s treatment plan may include a professional dental cleaning under carefully monitored anaesthesia. We’ll provide antibiotics and pain medication for your pet as needed.

Dental x-rays Only a portion of a tooth is visible above the gum line. Dental X-rays show what we can’t see - the tooth’s structure below the gums and the bone that anchors it.

Home dental care – Dogs and Cats

Keeping watch Home dental care includes monitoring your pet for changes in behaviour and inspecting your pet’s mouth regularly. We can show you what to look for. Tooth brushing You may find it difficult to imagine brushing your pet’s teeth, but daily brushing is the very best way to help your pet avoid dental disease. Ask us to show you how to brush your pet’s teeth. Feeding for a healthy mouth Brushing may be difficult, but using a pet food specially formulated to clean teeth makes effective home dental care as easy as feeding your pet. Ask us about the Hill’s dental pet foods that are available for your pet.

Home dental care - Horses

Our veterinarians Drs Chris Corcoran and Kate Heathwood have post graduate qualifications to recognise, manage and treat a variety of horse dental issues. It is essential for good equine husbandry that regular teeth and mouth examinations are performed as horses may develop a range of dental problems including sharp edges cutting gums, cracked teeth and even wave type deformities. All of these issues can cause pain and distress for the horses. If indicated, our vets will advise owners if rasping of the teeth is necessary. This will generally be carried out under sedation and possibly using a Powerfloat instrument for maximum efficiency and care. By maintaining the teeth on a regular basis in this way, horses will enjoy a longer and healthier life.

September is Dental Month at Tamborine Mountain and Canungra Veterinary Surgeries

To help promote dental care in our pets and horses, our veterinary surgeries are offering special incentives to owners during the month of September. During September, our surgeries will be offering a 10% discount on all dental procedures. This will include dental examinations, descaling and polishing and any other related dental work for dogs and cats. In addition, owners of animals that have their teeth cleaned by our surgery will also receive a free bag of Hills T/D dental food. Horses and their owners will also benefit during September with a 10% discount on teeth rasping including sedation. If you would like your animal’s teeth examined or attended to by one of our veterinarians, please call either of our surgeries for an appointment during surgery hours. From the depths of emotion, to the heights of expansion and possibility. This is the nature of your September trajectory. When in the thrall of feelings, it will be very wise to remember that this too shall pass. How you handle your feelings will determine the creativity of your next step.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)

Before you get to equanimity there are going to be a lot of details to be taken care of. Get ready to put in the time required to prepare yourself for success. Success meaning; having a satisfied feeling in your heart. Fortunately you are filled with confidence at the start of your journey.

Most of this month is to be spent trying to find balance. There are many types of balance. There’s the balance of someone sitting still doing nothing – and there’s the balance of the tightrope walker. One is static. One is dynamic. Experiment. Find the type that is right for you.

Canungra Rainfall - August 2014

For most of September, the Sun is travelling through Virgo. Virgo is a symbol for the order of nature. If you can tune into this, then your essence will grow. If you become either pedantic or chaotic, you will have missed the boat. Relax and nurture your most natural strengths.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

With the Sun making its passage through Virgo this month, you should be home and hosed. Perfection is already the case. To try to impose a version of perfection that has been manufactured in your madcap brain over what is already exquisite, is counter-intuitive. Start with ‘what is’.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Work on setting your foundations. Life might look like it is favouring others. It is actually giving you time to get your act together. The Sun will arrive later in the month, bringing light. As will Venus, bringing delight. Prepare the ground so you can fully receive their gifts. Trust life.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

The month begins with the Moon, Mars and Saturn in Scorpio. This makes for energy, emotion and potential frustration. It will take a significant amount of awareness to make this creative. Impulse and reactivity need to turn into drive and response. Stop signs are ‘wake up’ signs.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Though Jupiter is in Leo, fuelling your confidence, bravado and fire, he is operating behind the scenes. These changes may be happening, even though you are likely to notice them long after your friends have. Trust the undercurrents. The benefits will be on the surface soon enough.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

With Saturn in Scorpio and Pluto in Capricorn, you are getting a double dose of transformation. Perhaps you are becoming more and more aware of the fragility of this mortal existence, and hence learning to value it more consciously and wholeheartedly. Let life touch and change you.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Area.................... July 2014................... 2014 to Date.........Recorded by Canungra...............62.5mm....................... 479.5mm................. Uranus is retrograde in Aries. It looks like it’s going backwards, though it’s not. The astrological effect is that your desire for freedom is taking an inward turn. Certain things can’t be changed. Life is asking you to respond to those things, rather than react to them. Wake up to this.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Neptune and Chiron are both retrograde. They appear to be going backwards. Add this to the fact that the Sun is in your opposite sign, Virgo, and it would appear that you are being offered a unique set of possibilities. Integrate all that you react to into your being. Stop pushing away.

St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough, Guild President St Luke’s is safe! With sincere thanks to Bill Gubbins and John King we can confidently know St Luke’s crumbling foundation has been painstakingly repaired by John and Bill. A great effort for working under a building in cramped space as this is not the easiest way to spend your time. As we fast approach the Christmas season, this will be a wonderful time for business in Canungra but we also trust shoppers will stop to understand why Christmas is so important in the Christian calender. A packed house thoroughly enjoyed the food, fellowship and the entertainment which encompassed our small but lively building at the St Luke’s Annual Fund Raising Dinner. St Luke’s congregation is most grateful to the local towns people who generously donated to our fund raising night. These include a gift voucher from Natural Delights and a nights’ accommodation for a family at O’Reilly’s. Such a major prize certainly was a bonus and St Luke’s are extremely grateful to O’Reilly’s, as well as many other prizes were donated by members of the church. Little Red Riding Hood came to our Annual Dinner, while some guests disappeared from their seats pantomime characters appeared from the woodwork and the scary Big Bad Wolf took a dominant role. Apart from a great night the dedicated band of hard workers who help to put the night together, shows the true spirit of the congregation at St Luke’s. I sincerely thank each one for making the evening such a success.

Valley View Equine Group Sign On Day and Gymkhana By Rebecca Cameron

Saturday morning was a beautiful day for Valley View Equine Group Inc. Their Sign-On Day began at 8am under clear blue skies at the picturesque Canungra Show Grounds. A Gymkana was organised in conjunction with the membership drive and numbers swelled into the 50’s with competitors and families alike coming to check things out. After the initial sign up rush, the ‘Nervous Nellies’ class began. Adults and children all joined it with the riding class, bending with pegs, flag race, barrel race and an egg ‘n’ spoon race. All handlers, instructors and the crowd were incredibly supportive of the new equine competitors, showing patience at the time required and cheering wildly for the heats and victories. They day progressed to the Children’s Under 6 Led and Unled classes next, competing in the same events and being

Canungra Owls Soccer News By Bren Dalby

Well ... we have under 12s coached by Lee Collins and Under 14s coached by Errol Irvine through to the Finals! Look out for info for Grand Finals weekend on 13th and 14th September and come along to support our local talent! Nearly the end of soccer season and I want to thank everyone who has helped out this year; it has been a terrific year of recruiting new faces to several tasks and I am delighted ... especially as those wonderful people have offered to help again next year! I have thoroughly enjoyed (been a few hairy moments and a few times I have asked myself why I am still doing this when my kids don’t play here anymore!) the year and the four previous years but need to throw myself back into my dogs and showing and get my house finished so whilst I am very happy to be involved I cannot put in as many hours as I have done. We have a five year plan for the club which will involve some work and will make us a bigger and better club with more to offer to our local children - and adults too. We need to be able to offer a good sporting foundation for our youth especially with numbers in the area increasing and following in Fitness Steve’s tremendous input to our health and fitness locally I hope we see more older people becoming involved too. See ya at the Finals! GO THE OWLS!
