Leading Queensland Horse Trainer Bryan Guy Joins Aquis Farm
Major restoration works at one of Queensland’s leading thoroughbred training facilities has already attracted one of the industry’s top trainers with the Gold Coast’s Bryan Guy to relocate to Aquis Farm in October. Mr Guy, who has trained from stables near the Gold Coast Racecourse for the last 17 years, will move his entire training operation to the Aquis Farm complex at Canungra. As well as continuing to operate his own business for his own clients, Mr Guy will take exclusive control and responsibility for the Aquis Racing team. Aquis Farm, formerly known as Patinack Farm, has undergone extensive restoration works since being acquired by Aquis Australia in January this year. Mr Guy said the state-of-the-art training facilities had been painstakingly restored and were now among the best in Australia. “It is an incredible facility that was allowed to run down as a consequence of lack of investment under the previous owners but the Aquis team have turned the property around,” he said. “I do not think there is a property anywhere in Queensland that is better for racehorse training now that is has been restored.” Guy was attracted by the vision of the Aquis team to race its horses in both

Brisbane and Sydney from the Aquis Farm base and to continue to drive strong links between the Australian and Asian racing industries. “Aquis has a clear vision that it wants to be a leading player in the Asian horse racing industry and that will serve my clients well in the future,” Mr Guy said. The facility includes restored stables catering for more than 80 horses in training, private grass and sand training tracks, restored water walker and lap pools.
Your lifestyle counts!
“The combination of state of the art training facilities in a quiet, rural location will allow us to implement a number of innovative training concepts that I am confident will produce plenty of winners in the future,” he said. “Aquis Farm will be particularly beneficial for horses not suited to the hustle and bustle of the city training tracks.” For more information visit aquisfarm. com.

Guanaba Experience Approval Conditions Amended
Council has voted to amend the conditions of approval for a proposed mountain biking and outdoor recreation park on Tamborine Mountain. Council previously approved the development, known as the Guanaba Experience, at its Ordinary Meeting in May 2015. The development is planned for a 200ha site bounded by Tamborine Mountain National Park, Kaiser and Guanaba roads. Guanaba Experience will cater for a range of outdoor adventure activities including mountain biking, zip-lining, high ropes courses, camping and canopy walks. Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Jennifer Sanders said the development was consistent with Council’s desire to encourage environmentally sustainable eco-tourism and outdoor activities in the region. “It ticks a lot of boxes in terms of improved environmental outcomes and vegetation management, activity-based tourism and local job creation,” she said. Cr Sanders said the applicant had exercised their right through the Integrated Development System (IDAS) process to have Council review the approval conditions. Cr Sanders said Council had agreed to the proposed amendments following a review of its original determination as set out in the IDAS process. “This is a statutory requirement of the Sustainable Planning Act 2009. Following any development approval, IDAS allows an applicant to seek a review of specific conditioning subject to the provision of appropriate supporting information,” she said. “It is important to note this part of the process is separate to the public notification phase where other stakeholders can provide materials supporting or objecting to a development. “Ultimately, all parties to the development approval process - the applicant, submitters and Council - still have further recourse through the Planning and Environment Court in relation to any development outcome.”

Locals Join White Balloon Day
National child protection advocate Bravehearts is calling on communities right across Australia to sign up for White Balloon Day in support of the 59,000 children sexually harmed every year. Local child care centre Canungra Child Care Centre will join thousands of ‘children’s champions’ on Friday 11th September when it celebrates the event. Held during Child Protection Week (6th to 12th September), the 19th White Balloon Day will bring together residents, schools, governments, police, survivors, ambassadors, corporates and organisations to heighten awareness around the importance of protecting children. Bravehearts founder and CEO Hetty Johnston AM, says White Balloon Day is a symbol of hope for the one in five Australian children who will be sexually harmed before their 18th birthday – equating to 59,000 kids every year. “White Balloon Day is about raising awareness and funds to enable the continued delivery of vital support and prevention programs and giving kids the confidence to come forward and break the silence,” Mrs Johnston said. “We know that for the most part this crime is preventable, we just need adults to step forward and to prioritise the safety of our children. Let’s rise up and work together to protect the most vulnerable members of the community – our kids.” Funds raised helped Bravehearts to educate more than 83,500 children with personal safety and support more than 5000 kids and their families with specialist counselling services over the past year. Donate and participate at www.whiteballoondday.com.au or call Canungra Child Care Centre on 5543 5635 for more information.

My Country Escape Under New Management
Michelle Roper-Dennis says she has always wanted a shop like My Country Escape and when the popular Canungra business came up for sale, she grabbed the opportunity to buy it. “It was a lovely handover, [the previous owner] Tam was very helpful and all the locals who have come here have been fantastic. Everyone, from residents to other business owners, has been kind and welcoming,” Michelle said. Although many of the brands will remain, Michelle intends to develop the stock, especially the clothing and homewares. She intends to extend the range to cater for everything from affordable gifts to more exclusive and unusual products and the ‘something special’ gift. She will also be bringing in a new range of jewellery soon and has new cards in stock already. Michelle has also been stocking fresh flowers, travelling to Brisbane each week to pick out the best and freshest of the bunches for her customers! Michelle is passionate about networking with other businesses in the town and also wants to develop the space in the back of My Country Escape for community groups and craft groups to meet. She would be keen to hear from anyone who would like to use the space for classes, just drop in to the shop and ask her about it. My Country Escape is open seven days a week from 9am until 4 - 5pm (depending on trade). Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.

Council Commissions Flood Warning Stations
Six new automated river height and rainfall stations have been installed at sites throughout the Scenic Rim as part of a Council initiative to enhance the region’s flood and severe weather warning network. Mayor John Brent said the improvements had been co-funded by Council, the State and Federal Governments under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program. “These sites will provide additional real-time data to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) giving that agency a broader picture of what is occurring in the region’s river and rainfall catchments at any given time,” he said. “This information is also available to Council and emergency services which may be planning for or responding to severe weather events as well as members of general public through the BOM website.” Cr Brent said two river height and rain stations had been commissioned on
Teviot Brook, one upstream of Boonah at Harpers Crossing on Mt Alford Rd, and the other on Boonah-Beaudesert Rd at Coulson. “Should the water level rise above a certain height we know with certainty the road is flooded. While this may inconvenience some motorists, always remember if it’s flooded forget it.” Elsewhere, stations have been added to Cannon Creek at Kooralbyn Bridge, to Canungra Creek at Double Crossing Road, upstream of Canungra, and on Christmas Creek at Rudds Lane. A new rainfall station has been erected on Long Rd at Tamborine Mountain to capture additional rain data for the area. Cr Brent said the original funding allocation of $160,000 had been intended to fund only four stations under the program. “Council was able to expand the scope of the project to deliver an additional two stations within the budget which is a great outcome for the region,” he said.
Mayor John Brent and Deputy Mayor Virginia West at the new station on Double Crossing Rd.
“It also demonstrates Council’s capacity to deliver value for money and costeffective solutions for residents,” he said.

Countdown For Pool Safety
Scenic Rim pool owners have just over three months left to ensure their pool complies with mandatory Queensland fencing and safety requirements. All pools, including spas and some portable pools, need to comply with a uniform Queensland pool safety standard by 30th November 2015 or earlier if the property is sold or leased. Mayor John Brent said the single standard would apply to homes with new or existing pools as well as unit complexes and accommodation facilities, replacing the transitional arrangements which have been in effect for five years. A swimming pool is defined as an above or belowground structure principally used for swimming or bathing, including some models of portable pools and spas. If your portable pool or spa can hold more than 300 millimetres of water, has a volume of more than 2000 litres or has a filtration system, then the new laws may apply to you. To find out more visit the Queensland Building and Construction Commission website at www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/home-building-owners/ pool-safety which provides an explanation of the steps pool owners need to take to ensure their pool is compliant.

Thanks Canungra! Canungra Show came and went on 22nd August with a good crowd and lots of fun had by everyone there (I hope!). For the people involved in putting it all together, it was like preparing for a wedding - 12 months preparation for an event that lasted a day! Like many of our community events, the Show is put together by a group of volunteers, people who have work and families and lives to lead and somehow manage to fit in the time to visit sponsors, do programs for the various events, coordinate the advertising, put up banners, get gate and carparking rosters organised, order ribbons, organise prizemoney and well as taking entries and a myriad of other jobs. There were some great people helping out this year, and the Committee was very grateful to the people who came on the day to help out with everything from pencilling and working on the gate to emptying rubbish bins and cleaning toilets! Special mention also to the people who turned up on the Sunday to help clean up. Many of the volunteers are almost spent by this time so having a few fresh faces to share the workload is a huge lift for everyone there. So thank you, Canungra. Hope you had an awesome day!
The Canungra Show was another great local event with no reported problems from our end. There’s always concerns where large groups of people, alcohol and vehicles are concerned however events like this demonstrate the quality of the community we have here in Canungra. From all of us here at the Police Station a big thank you. We have run a couple of educational initiatives over the past month with a Drink Right at the Canungra Hotel and Operation Safe Ride in DJ Smith Park. We had a few interested participants in the Drink Right which aimed to give people an insight into blood alcohol readings and promote a responsible attitude to alcohol and driving. Needless to say, some were surprised at how fast their readings went up. Operation Safe Ride was conducted in conjunction with the Logan District Road Policing Command and Dept of Transport. The aim of the day was to engage with the many motorcyclists that visit Canungra of a weekend and promote a safer attitude to riding. Time will tell how well it was received however the two accidents over the last weekend involving motorcycles doesn’t bode well. The school holidays are about to start again and with it there will be an expected increase in the amount of traffic on our roads. There will be a focus on Policing of the Fatal Five over the period which includes Drink/Drug Driving, Speeding, Seatbelts, Fatigue and Distraction (including mobile telephones). Expect to see an increase in the number of Police vehicles on the road over the School Holiday period and don’t be the one who gets caught. Also over the School Holidays can I ask that everyone looks out for our Schools and surrounds and report any suspicious behaviour or trespassers. Also keep an eye out for our local vandals who have started up again down at Lions Park. It seems that they don’t appreciate the facilities provided to us all by Council and come out at night to put their ‘NSK’ mark on the newly painted tables etc, much like a little dog trying to mark their territory. The Scenic Rim Council are doing a great job at cleaning up the graffiti when it’s identified, but if we can be a little vigilant and report behaviours before the damage is done it could save all rate payers a bit of money which could be better spent in other ways. It is an offence to possess graffiti instruments which include marker pens and spray cans in certain circumstances and also for businesses to sell same so if we can catch the little miscreants with the tools they gain be confiscated and Court action taken. That’s all this month, have a great holiday if you’ve got them. If you see or hear anything that may be illegal or suspicious please come and see us or contact the station on one of these numbers: Canungra Police 5543 5120, Police Link on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The project is part of the Vibrant Towns and Villages program and is in the early construction stage with lots more vegetation to be planted. Residents with properties greater than 1 hectare are again eligible for up to 1000 free trees, with a choice of ten native species. This program has been hugely successful in previous years and assists landowners with stack shade and property management. Smoothie Magic
When we’re busy (which is ALL the time for some!) it can be hard to think about creating a healthy meal. Salads seem to take forever to chop, and you haven’t got the energy or brain power to plan something nutritious. Some days I just don’t have time to stop for a healthy meal for lunch and I love the quick option of a smoothie. If you’ve never tried one, or think it’s too hard to experiment with - let me give you some tips. It’s the BEST and easiest way to cram a lot of nutrients into your body with very little culinary input - my kind of healthy meal! And you can consume it on the run - no cutlery required! I’ve also found it a delicious way to get protein and vegetables into my boys before school! My favourite blender is the ‘bullet’ sort which blends 1-2 serves and takes virtually no kitchen bench space. A stick blender will also work, or a standard blender. You can easily find recipes online but it’s really simple to create your own. There are four basic ingredients that you need for a filling and nutritious smoothie. • 1-2 cups vegetable • 1 cup fruit • 1 serve (approx 25g) protein powder • 1 cup water or any non-dairy milk Avoid starchy hard vegetables such as carrot, beetroot, broccoli stalks, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, eggplant, corn, peas or pumpkin. They don’t blend well. Use any soft or leafy vegetables like baby spinach, kale, cucumber, lettuce, pea sprouts, celery (in moderation as it’s very fibrous), avocado (although technically a fruit). You can pretty much use any fruit you have on hand, just peel apples as the skins don’t blend well. Bananas and avocados add a beautiful creaminess to the mixture. Protein powders (whey, pea or hemp) can be plain or flavoured, and are best without artificial sweeteners or flavourings. For some healthy fats you could add a few seeds, nut meal or oil (flaxseed, macadamia etc). You can also add any other treat like mint leaves, cinnamon, cacao, vanilla essence etc. The sky’s the limit!

The Canungra Village Garden is excited to announce its Spring Launch festival to celebrate the first plantings at Earthy Delights cafe, and the growing movement to grow food and flowers along our main street. The Launch is scheduled for Saturday 12th September from 3-6pm, alongside Earthy Delights Cafe at 32 Christie Street. There will be a number of Canungra Village Garden at Canungra Show events and activities for all tastes and all ages. Local bee-keeper Mal Alroy will provide a presentation ‘Introduction to Bee-keeping’ along with some demonstration hives and will be on hand to answer all your bee questions. There will be a worm-farm stall with everything you need to know about these garden friends. Aquaponics and wicking-bed expert Mark Pickard will demonstrate how these systems can work for you, and a soil health expert with tips and products to help you get the best out of your soil. There will also be market stalls with seedlings, seeds, fruit and vegetables, and succulents, arts like knitting and weaving, and upcycled goods. We may be lucky enough to see local artist Tamlyn Geiger and local potter Deb at work creating their magic, or have your own magic drawn in henna. Children will have a great time getting their face painted, attending kid’s story-time (with SRRC librarian), relaxing with a kids yoga session by Kara Swift, and potting their own seeds at the potting table. Earthy Delights cafe will remain open until 6pm for those feeling peckish or in need of a caffeine hit. There will be a raffle with four great prizes, so join in the fun and don’t forget your raffle tickets at the front entrance. Entrance is by donation of a gold coin or garden tool (those excess tools already in your garden shed will be gratefully received). All donations go towards establishing the Canungra Village Garden Project. Call Alex Griffiths on 0478 784 719 for more info. Scheduling of activities may change.

Pink Hoe Down in the Showground
The Canungra Owls Under 12’s All Girls Soccer Team played in their semi-final on Saturday 29th August against Surfers Paradise. For the four weeks leading up to the Semi-Finals the girls gained some skills through the expertise of Coach Gary French. Gary is a well established skills coach with many years coaching women’s teams in the US. He has had an enormous amount of success in developing local players in Gold Coast representative teams to fulfil their potential and reach their goals, including players who have gone on to the Matildas, Young Matildas and Australian School Girls teams. At their last session the girls were treated with a visit from Deeanna Thompson. She is training with the Brisbane Roar at the moment and is the Queensland Golden Boot Winner for the NPL with 32 goals this season. The girls were all very excited to meet and train with Deeanna who filled the girls with encouragement for their coming Semi-Final. Their coach Johnno Stephens has been delighted with the girls’ achievement over the past year, saying that their skills have improved greatly with Gary’s sessions and that a win against Surfers in the Semi-finals would be well deserved after all their hard work this year. The girls hope to have a team next year and encourage any young girls interested in soccer to give it a go.

AWL Pets of the Month
Clancy is a gorgeous man looking for a quiet home where he can lay about with the family. He loves to cuddle and will do best with attentive owners who have plenty of time to spend with him. He’s a calm, gentle fellow and would be great for a semi-active home where he can get out to stretch his legs on a short walk. He gets along well with other dogs but his true calling is to be a snuggle bunny inside your home! Clancy is seven years old and is $250. He is vaccinated, wormed and desexed.
Casino is a stunning, two year old long haired girl who loves lazing about. She enjoys cuddles and will be content to sit beside you on the couch. Casino likes to talk to you every now and then. Come meet this beautiful kitty at the Coombabah Shelter today! Casino is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed.
Nature’s Gems Green Rosella (Platycercus caledonicis) By Melissa Whitby Tasmania is home to an incredible array of native wildlife that is found nowhere else in the world. My birding foray to Tassie earlier this year enabled me to encounter some of these incredible species. As mentioned in previous articles for the paper, I had gone to Tasmania with the intention of finding all of the 12 endemic birds. I was especially keen to encounter and photograph the Green Rosella. The Green Rosella can only be seen in Tasmania and small islands such as King in the Bass Strait. This particular parrot is easy to identify with a blue cheek patch, red band over the bill and olive-green rump. Juvenile Green Rosellas are a duller olive in colour with less yellow on the head. Green Rosellas are usually seen in pairs and spend much of their time foraging for food. The birds utilise a variety of food sources including flowers, seeds and fruits. The distribution of the Green Rosella extends throughout Tasmania. Throughout this range, the birds are relatively common. I observed the Green Rosella utilising a variety of habitats including farmlands, timber along watercourses, forests and urban parklands. Some of the best views that I had of Green Rosellas on my trip were at Adventure Bay on Bruny Island. The birds were easy to approach and observe in close quarters, especially if I was quiet. This made the Green Rosella a relatively easy bird to photography with some time and plenty of patience. On one occasion, I had the good luck on walking right up to pair of Green Rosellas feeding in a low shrub. This was an incredible rewarding experience as I had amazing views of the Green Rosellas going about their every day business unperturbed. For anyone visiting Tasmania, I believe that this would be one bird species that would definitely be encountered. I would recommend taking the time to admire their beauty, as it is reminder what other feathered treasures Green Rosella call Tasmania home!

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
13
The heart is a hungry beast. Life is insisting that you find a way of satisfying it that makes you feel like you are a king, or a queen. Perhaps the greatest delight will come in liberating yourself from old habits and patterns that have been hemming you in. Light a candle in your chest.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Befuddlement comes the moment you take on the task of trying to keep everybody’s happiness intact at the expense of your own. The moment your cranial cavity is full of other people’s ideas and your own have gone out the window, you are in trouble. Add your inspirations to the mix.

Tearing apart structure is a great idea if the structure is not so good. Another approach is to stop fixing it, so that it falls apart by itself over time. Either way you are confronted with the decision of deciding what is healthy order and what is not. That which inspires beauty and joy is a clue.
33 36
To be completely driven by the need to belong is a sure fire way to become a herd animal. There is a lot to be said for community, but the moment it becomes a conservative, nit-picking organism, minus light and inspiration, there’s a problem. Find your ground. Love from there.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
The desire to be an individual at all costs is not all that original. Sometimes the most individualistic thing we can do is bow to a greater force and melt out of the way. Don’t be afraid to be an absence, a nobody. There’s a chance that this could lead to a sense of a higher order.

The Sun is illuminating your virginal heartlands. There is nothing more beautiful than a forest that has not been touched by man. Be who you are with the kind of pride that provokes you to stand up for all that is real untamed inside. This is not a defensive pride. It is a beautiful thing.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
As Venus makes her way through Leo, you are confronted with having to figure out the difference between narcissism and self-love. One leads to an unassuming beauty. The other is brittle, insecure and easily fades. Walk out of attitudes that have been holding you prisoner.

News from St Luke’s
By Di Ayscough
What a busy place Canungra has been lately. The show brought many visitors to town and gave everyone a chance to see how enthusiastic we are about the community. Each weekend there are motor bike enthusiasts and tourists; sporting activities happening and local markets taking place. There are great places to enjoy wine, coffee, food and local produce. How lucky are we to have such a wonderful environment to live in. Do you ever stop to think why Canungra is so rich in lifestyle and commitment? I do and I value being part of this community. I am very grateful and know such an amazing place does not happen by chance but by the willingness of hard working and conscientious people. To these people I say thank you. You certainly bring much pleasure and enjoyment to many. St Luke’s Anglican Church is a small part of the big picture that makes this township, but it is a real part. St Luke’s quietly waits for people to come and see how beautiful it is. Created by local people 78 years ago, outside it looks like a little wooden church, inside it displays wonderful architecture and timbers of yester year. On Friday 28th August St Luke’s came alive with food, friendship and entertainment at the annual fund raising dinner. This night is a reflection of the hard work of local people who care. Our caring extends to Operation Christmas Child where shoe boxes are packed and sent around the world to help children in developing countries. If you would like to know more about this wonderful project, come along to a Wednesday morning tea in the pavilion at St Luke’s, or check online at www.samaritanspurse.org.au/ operation-christmas. Until next time, enjoy some happiness and be encouraged to be kind and caring to someone else.

Solution page 35
This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Sportsperson of the Month - August
The Sportspeople for August are the Canungra Owls Under 11’s Soccer Team. The Under 11’s 2015 Football Gold Coast season concluded on 15th August and they remained unbeaten with 18 rounds played resulting in 16 wins, 2 draws, 152 goals scored and only 40 goals conceded.
The team also ventured to the Mt Tamborine annual knockout carnival on Sunday 2nd August and managed to win their way to the grand final with victories over Mt Tamborine, Ormeau and Runaway Bay . The final versus Pacific Pines was a tense affair but Canungra showed enormous spirit and prevailed 3-1 to take the title.

Coach Colin Hasler is proud of all the boys for their efforts throughout the season but was particularly moved when, in the final round of the year versus Runaway Bay an opposition parent crossed the field after the final whistle to congratulate coach on the teams conduct on the field and in particular an Owls player who went to the aid of another child when he went down hurt. Well done boys, you have played scintillating football at times, always fairly, sometimes against larger and older opposition and you all have made your parents, coach and club very proud.

Canungra Owls Soccer News By Rachel Mathers
As the 2015 soccer season comes to an end, we’d like to give a huge shout out to all of our soccer families who have given up their Saturday mornings (and a number of Sundays this year!) to enable their kids to play the greatest game on Earth! Well done parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and family friends for making this season an enjoyable one. This year our club has had more volunteers than ever before, lightening the load for everyone – THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! If you’d like to get more involved with the club next year, please keep your eye out in The Canungra Times and on our Facebook page. Thankfully the rain held off (for the most part) for our end of season presentation – all the kids seemed to have a great day with fun games and activities for all ages. Thanks to Candice Wright and Chris O’Connell for taking charge. On Wednesday 19th August, the Canungra Owls were lucky enough to be chosen to run onto the field with
Canungra Owls players meet Brisbane Roar players. Photo: Steven Gibson Photography
Brisbane Roar during their pre-season clash with Melbourne Victory. It was all over in a matter of minutes, but I have no doubt that every one of those kids will remember it for a very long time. All that it took for this to happen was an email volunteering our Club, so if you hear of any other opportunities like this, please let us know.
By the time this edition goes to print, our U12 Mixed (coached by Greg Mathers) and U12 Girls (coached by John Stephens) teams would have competed in their very first finals series. Both teams finished in the top 4 for their division – a remarkable effort for their first competition year. Both games were elimination matches, so watch this space for the results next month!
Canungra Bowls Club is having a
Fundraising Day on
Saturday 19th September to raise funds for Canungra Ambulance Station. All proceeds will go to the Canungra Ambulance Station to purchase medical equipment for the Canungra Community, to the value of $2500.
Canungra Bowls Club invites families and members of the community to visit the Bowls Club for a BBQ/ Sausage sizzle and barefoot bowls, with prizes to be won from our raffles. Canungra Bowls Club will be open from 10am – 4pm, everyone welcome. Anyone wishing to make a donation, or for any enquiries, please contact Bronwyne, Club Secretary on 0409 797 965 or email canungrabowlsclub@gmail.com. Come on down to the Canungra Bowls Club and help support a great cause!
