FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year By Bren Dalby The Annual Foodworks Sportsperson of Awards were held at Moriarty Park on Sunday 11th February, with the coveted Sportsperson of the Year for 2017 awarded to Saxon Matena. Saxon is an outstanding athlete across many codes, in particular High Jump, Triple Jump and Rugby League. He is also an excellent runner and swimmer - an amazing young man with a big future. The recipient of the prestigious Achiever of the Year for 2017 was Charlotte FlynnGrant. Charlotte is also an outstanding all rounder achieving incredible results in athletics and rugby. The competition was tough this year and extra judges were sourced. However Saxon and Charlotte were clearly the ‘judges choice’ overall. Congratulations to all nominees who did exceedingly well in their fields. The Moriarty Park Committee, who run the Sportsperson Awards, are always blown away by the massive talent over a wide range of sports that a relatively small area can produce ! The 2007 Sportsperson of the Year Josh Bell-McNee was the guest on the night to present the trophies. Josh was ‘double whammy’ recipient in 2007. He was nominated twice in 2007 - once for cricket where he had performed incredibly and also as part of the Under 11 Canungra Owls Soccer Team who had an amazing year and won the VERY first Grand Final for Canungra (extra special for me as I was the manager and the terrific John Spark was
Josh Bell-McNee with Achiever of the Year Charlotte Flynn-Grant
coach) ... this win I should add was closely followed by the Under 16 girls the next day! Scott Dalby’s famous red soccer boots played in both Grand Finals as Chantelle Wright’s decided to come apart after a rough semi-final!! The Awards night went very well regardless of the usual downpour whenever Bren organises an evening event (people don’t ask me to night events now as I am a jinx!) Alesia McCabe spent several hours making sandwiches; Dean Meldrum, Liz Richens, George Dalby and Virginia West were a great help running the evening and Rachel was a champion raffle ticket seller. The raffle raised $155 which will go to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital and a paver
in the Walkway for Life will have Saxon’s name on it as a reminder of his success. Thank you to all who contributed to the evening, especially Tony and Anne from FoodWorks who supplied FoodWorks vouchers, Sportys vouchers, all the food and all the trophies. Sportsperson of the Month is chosen from public nominations. Monthly winners receive vouchers to Canungra FoodWorks and Sportys Warehouse and a medal at the annual awards night. The Sportsperson of the Year and Achiever of the Year are selected from these monthly winners. To nominate someone you know for FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month, contact Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919.

How Many Lives Could You Save?
Chris Duncan has lived in Canungra all his life. His family were one of the founding families of the town and he is passionate about the area and where he comes from. Many readers will recognise Chris as the singer of the National Anthem at events such as Anzac Day and the Canungra Show. Tragically, another cause Chris has become passionate about is organ donation. Over 12 months ago, Chris was placed on a waiting list for a double organ transplant he needs a new kidney and a pancreas transplant due to medical conditions he has lived with for many years. Chris is a registered nurse but is too unwell to work and the time spent waiting for the transplant, as well as the stress of an unknown future, causes him considerable anxiety. “It is an invisible disability,” said Chris, “I don’t look sick, but I can’t work and it is very hard to just wait for that phone call every day,” he said. Around 1,400 people are on Australian organ transplant waiting lists at any time. One organ and tissue donor can save and transform the lives of 10 or more people.
Chris Duncan with his new nephew Theodore
To be an organ donor, you must register Australian Organ Donor Register and the family of every potential donor will be asked to confirm the donation decision of their loved one before organ and tissue donation for transplantation can proceed.
Chris says countries such as Spain, Portugal and France are ‘opt-out’ countries - where organ donation is automatic unless the person registers their wish not to be an organ donor. This reduces the waiting time for transplant recipients. The Australian Register can only be accessed by Authorised Medical Personnel to confirm the donation decision. Chris says joining the Australian Organ Donor Register and discussing the decision with your family is important. “It leaves your family in no doubt of your decision about becoming an organ and tissue donor when you die,” said Chris. On 31st January 2018, only 6,495,665 people were registered as organ donors on the Australian Organ Donor Register (you must be 16 years or over to register). If you are unsure whether you are on the Australian Organ Donation Register, you can check your status through your mygov account or via Medicare. If you are willing to one day save lives as an organ and tissue donor, please register your donation decision online today at register.donatelife.gov.au/decide.

Council Appoints CEO
Scenic Rim Regional Council has appointed Mr Jon Gibbons as its next Chief Executive Officer. Describing himself as “a country kid at heart”, Mr Gibbons has spent his entire career working in rural and regional Australia and brings to the Scenic Rim extensive experience in local government. Mayor Greg Christensen said Mr Gibbons was a former Chief Executive Officer of Carpentaria Shire Council in Normanton and was Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Whitsunday Regional Council during the local government amalgamations of 2008. “Mr Gibbons also brings to Scenic Rim Regional Council extensive local government experience in environmental issues; development assessment; regulatory services; parks, gardens and waste management; and environmental health and building certification as a former Director of Health and Environment at Bowen Shire Council,” he said. “Most recently, he was the CEO of the Administration of Norfolk Island in the South Pacific during a challenging period of transition. “Across all his previous roles, Mr Gibbons has demonstrated his ability to deal with difficult issues while still commanding the respect of his peers, employees and communities. “He is well credentialled, with a Master of Business Administration (Local Government), a Graduate Diploma of Local Government Management, a Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health).” With a personal connection to the region - his wife, Jeanette grew up at Beechmont - Mr Gibbons feels very much at home in the Scenic Rim and will take up his new appointment in March. “I am looking forward to working hard and building firm partnerships with Council and the community,” he said.

Local Groups Benefit from Community Grants
In Round 94, community groups in the Scenic Rim State Electorate will share in over $368,092.20 worth of grant funding awarded through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF). Around the Tamborine and Canungra District, six groups received $140,232.50 in funding and Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said the money would make a huge difference to the six successful local groups. “This terrific outcome would not have occurred without many hardworking volunteers giving their time and energy to complete the grant application process. It is wonderful to see that schools and community groups will be able to install and refurbish facilities and purchase equipment to help them maintain their grounds. “I commend all of these groups for the wonderful work they do and encourage other community groups to apply for Round 96 of the GCBF. Not-for-profit groups in the community can apply for grants from $500 to $35,000,” Mr Krause said. To apply for the program visit: www. justice.qld.gov.au/grants or for more information contact Jon Krause’s office via email scenicrim@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 5515 1100.

Melanoma
Well known 19 year old local Rowan Dalby never thought she would be grateful for the very painful experience she had last year when she accidentally received terrible UV burns whilst welding. The accident made a mess of her legs and as a precaution she booked a check at the Robina Skin Clinic. Whilst Dr Venu was checking Rowan’s lower legs he did a full skin check and noticed a couple of ‘spots’ on her back which he photographed to monitor for future visits. During one of those visits, just prior to Christmas; Dr Venu took one look at Rowan’s back and said “that’s changed and I am going to take it off now”. Two days later he rang to deliver the bad news that this was a malignant melanoma and she would require surgery, cutting right down to the muscle, to get a good clearance. Rowan has since had this done and whilst she had 20 stitches she will have minimal scarring. The prognosis for Rowan is good but had she not burned her legs, as a 19 year old, she

may not have had the foresight to go for a ‘routine’ skin check. Rowan said she urges everyone, young and old, to go and have their skin checked. “This could have been deadly for me melanoma is the biggest killer in the 15-40 age bracket and we all have the ability to

have our skin checked in just about any town in the country”, said Rowan. Rowan is of fair complexion but on the strength of that she said she has always been very careful in the sun and mindful of the ‘Slip Slop Slap’ message. “This could happen or be happening to any one of us,” said Rowan.

The Scenic Rim will ignite in celebration of the 2018 Commonwealth Games with a series of community events across the region from Sunday 1st April. In the countdown to the Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton will pass through Tamborine Mountain on Sunday 1st April before arriving on the Gold Coast for the Games Opening Ceremony on Wednesday 4th April. Scenic Rim Regional Council is proud to present its Shared Fire Community Celebrations as part of its Commonwealth Games Cultural Program. Council has worked with local communities for more than 18 months to plan a series of spectacular community festivities showcasing the region’s vibrant arts community and breathtaking landscapes against the backdrop of the colour and spectacle of the Commonwealth Games. In addition to the Queen’s Baton Relay event to be held on Tamborine Mountain on Easter Sunday, there will be food trucks showcasing local produce under a rainforest canopy, long-table street dining, live music, family sports activities, roving entertainment, an artisan alley, arts markets, fire ceremonies and sculptural fire pits, storytelling, and vintage cars and bikes among added

PIGGY OUT & ABOUT HAVING FUN AT SCHOOL!
Towards the beginning of the school term, the children at Canungra State School had a special visitor at their weekly assembly … Piggy! It is always good to see the excitement on the faces of all the kids (and adults!) when Piggy visits – this is especially true with the Prep students, who were more than happy to give high fives from the front row. Before the assembly, Piggy had a sneaky play on the new playground equipment in the front area and he absolutely agrees that Canungra State School has done a terrific job in raising money to help the kids enjoy their lunch time. Canungra & District Community Bank® have proudly supported the school and it’s P&C by providing funds to purchase a microwave, as well as two commercial grade blenders - keep your eye out at the tuckshop over the coming months when Kirsti puts these to good use! Our local branch has also sponsored the Seniors Graduation Book for the past 3 years, meaning that all year six students will have a great collection of memories to take with them as they leave primary school behind. We absolutely LOVE giving back to our community and look forward to receiving applications from local, not for profit organisations/charities for the current round of funding. Applications must be received at the branch no later than 31 March 2018.

A Suitcase Full of Treasures
Last year a red suitcase was left at the Canungra Op Shop. Inside it was a treasure trove of family documents, photos and other items, some dating back to the late 1800’s. The main surname throughout was Taplin - who left the case was unknown. The case was bought into the Canungra Visitor Information Centre, where Alison Anderson works and with a keen interest in history, she quickly became involved in tracing the family. Alison said a great deal of the items related to James Alan Taplin 1909-1989. A search on Ancestry.com showed family trees who had James as well as his ancestors listed. Alison emailed six or so of these tree owners explaining how she came into possession of the case and its contents, and her wish to find a family member to pass these historical items onto. In July Alison received a phone call from a relative of James Taplin, Emily, who had been contacted by one of the people she had emailed who lived in the UK. It was a roundabout way of tracing the family, but she had found the person who would appreciate the wealth of these items.
Emily and Alison Anderson
“Unfortunately all too often family photos, documents etc end up at the tip!” said Alison. Last month on a trip to Sydney, Alison was able to finally hand over the red case that she had been keeping in trust for Emily, who shares Alison’s passion for family
history. It was a great ending to the story and for Alison a relief that her perseverance had paid off. Alison said she looks forward to keeping in contact with Emily and hearing about her discoveries as she sorts through the many items within the mysterious red suitcase.

From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Time to Get Going Again We have a myriad of events happening in our community - Turning Canungra Pink, Soccer Games, Trivia Nights, the Canungra Rodeo and Canungra Show and the events later in the year are starting to get planning again! What a lot of people don’t realise is that these events are all organised by volunteers, and a very small number of volunteers who seem to be involved in many different activities. Volunteering can be a great way to become involved in the community - make friends, meet new people with a common interest and feel like you are contributing something to the place you live. Of course you need to choose something you are happy to do and something you feel you have time to do - no point stretching yourself to breaking point over something that is supposed to be enjoyable! There is always something the these community groups would welcome a hand with - whether it is something you can do at home in your spare time or helping out at a working bee with other people. Planning has started for Turning Canungra Pink (cancer awareness and fundraiser) as well as the annual Rodeo and Show. I know all these organisations could do with some extra helpers so if you are new to town (or not so new) and would like to help out, drop into the Canungra Times office or contact me on 5543 5532.
To the Editor. I just wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate Canungra Valley Medical for providing, what I, and many others believe to be, exceptional professional service. In particular, I would like to mention two of the doctors I hold in very high esteem. Firstly, and to this man I owe a very great debt of gratitude, Dr Dave Christensen, through whose diligence and expertise my son’s life was saved. He had been bitten by a tiger snake and I had delivered him to Canungra Valley Medical; although I learned that for snake bite, a hospital is the correct destination; as doctors’ surgeries do not carry antivenin. My son’s life was saved that day by Dr Christensen’s quick and effective treatment. Secondly, I would like to mention Dr Dayman Steptoe. I do not think I have ever met a more dedicated and compassionate doctor. He reminds me of the family doctors I knew during my young life, in England; when family doctors made house calls and felt like family friends - such is this doctor’s manner. During each of my visitations to see Doctor Steptoe, I have been made to feel really cared for and given time for my malady to be discussed and treated. Wilson Gaythwaite

Council Plan Open For Comment
Library Renovation
Council has commenced community consultation on a proposed change to incorporate a Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) into the three existing planning schemes covering the Scenic Rim region. Written submissions about any aspect of the proposed LGIP to replace the Priority Infrastructure Plans currently contained in the Beaudesert Shire Planning Scheme, Boonah Shire Planning Scheme and Ipswich Planning Scheme must be received by Scenic Rim Regional Council before 4.30pm on Thursday 15th March 2018. Mayor Greg Christensen said the proposed LGIP will integrate infrastructure planning with land use planning in the three existing planning schemes and identify the key infrastructure needed to support future urban development in the region. “It will also provide the basis for Council to levy infrastructure charges and place conditions on trunk infrastructure - such as roads, drainage and parks - as part of developments,” he said. “This will ensure infrastructure associated with new development is planned and provided efficiently, cost effectively and sustainably, and that it aligns with Council’s asset management and long-term financial planning.” The proposed LGIP and supporting material can be viewed online and downloaded from www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au It is also available for inspection and purchase from Council’s customer service centres at Beaudesert, Boonah and Tamborine Mountain.

Following the successful “meet the author” event with local author Marisa Parker in February, Canungra Books and Art have launched a monthly event to be held on the first Sunday of every month starting at 3pm in the shop courtyard and/ or inside according to the weather. Jan McGregor, owner of Canungra Books and Art said “We have had many suggestions and requests for a regular book club or social event”. “This will be an evolving opportunity and will start off as a casual get together for interested folk. Each month will have a new speaker or topic, or just the chance for a social chat amongst fellow books and art lovers”. With the number of local authors, artists and speakers in the region the monthly events promise to be interesting!. Everyone attending is invited to bring a small plate of goodies and BYO drink. More information on each event will be available on the Canungra Books and Art Facebook page. Ideas welcome. The next event is on Sunday 4th March at 3pm. Phone 0418 792 161 for more information.

Disaster Dashboard Drives Emergency Preparedness The launch of a new online resource will provide vital information to the Scenic Rim community before, during and after a major weather event or natural disaster according to Scenic Rim Regional Council. Council’s Disaster Dashboard is a userfriendly platform developed as a single source for a wide range of information including updates about weather warnings, road conditions, power outages, and the operation of evacuation and recovery centres. Mayor Greg Christensen said the introduction of the Disaster Dashboard will assist Scenic Rim residents to be stay informed and support their own ‘what if’ plans in the event of extreme weather and natural disasters. “We can’t control natural disasters and extreme weather events but we can control the way we respond to them,” he said.

Tiny House Makes a Big Impression
John Rodger and Sharon Abbey in their Tiny House on Beechmont. Inset: The main bedroom has plenty of space.
With the cost of the average home in our region around $500,000, and the average income $76,000, people are looking for cheaper, sustainable housing alternatives. Sharon Abbey and John Rodger spent several years looking into a number of housing alternatives for their block on Beechmont. With their children grown up, they didn’t need the traditional four bedroom home and wanted to downsize.
Environmental sustainability is also important to the couple, who decided that a smaller house using less energy to keep going would be better than a sprawling larger home. At the time they were working for Titan Sheds and came across the idea of building their own tiny home. Sharon said they lived in a caravan on the property while saving to finance each stage of the build. Over several years they managed to complete what is now their dream home - a
one bedroom tiny house with walk in robe, spacious kitchen, living area and bathroom and spectacular views - Jardin Tiny House. John and Sharon are passionate about the Tiny House movement and will hold an open house on 24th March between 12.30pm 1.30pm and 25th March from 9.30am to 1.30pm at 4 Prunus Court, Beechmont. For more information about Jardin Tiny House Australia, visit their Facebook page or call Sharon on 0407 656 008.

The Canungra Tae Kwon Do Club has been operating for twenty five years. The Club is run by master instructor John Callegari, seventh Dan black belt. John says the Club instils discipline and respect from all students. “We also allow students to have some fun, especially using striking shields, focus pads and other equipment,” said John. “Also, a strong part of training is self defence. We can teach a way to avoid a punch and follow up techniques to overcome an attack.”

To demonstrate, photo one (above, left) shows Cooper’s punch and John’s block and striking the under the chin with a palm heel strike. This technique will cause the attacker to fall to the ground and generally it is enough to allow you to leave quickly. Photo two (above, centre) shows the neck being pulled back with the right arm and struck with a knee strike to the midsection. Photo three (above, right) shows the attacker struck with an arm bar to the lower neck.

Self-Defence
John said these techniques are very serious and not to be used except under the eye of a qualified instructor. John teaches his students that the techniques are strictly for self-defence. During March any one who joins the club will receive a free training suit, with the first lesson free to see if you enjoy the training. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Canungra School of Arts Hall in Pine Street, Canungra from 6pm. Come along to the class or call Master Callegari on 0418 210 880 for more information.

Tamborine Village Lions at the unveiling of the cenotaph.
Tamborine Cenotaph Unveiled By Shirlene Pott A project at the forefront of the Tamborine Village Lions Club has been realised, with the unveiling of the Tamborine Village Cenotaph last month. The night before the unveiling Tamborine Village experienced the highest rainfall in 17 years, which put a dampener on the opening, but Mother Nature was kind on the day. The cenotaph, located on the grounds of Tamborine Memorial Hall is dedicated to all of the men and women who answered their country’s call in times of conflict. The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland who addressed the community and unveiled the Cenotaph. Member for Scenic Rim, John Krause and Deputy Mayor Nadia O’Carroll addressed the gathering. Tamborine Village Lions President Paul Krahnen thanked all members of the Tamborine Village Lions Club past and present for their effortless dedication to make this happen. “I would also like to thank to our local communities for supporting the Lions in all the fundraisers,” said Paul, “This is a special and a great day for the Tamborine Village Lions and our community,” he said. The crowd listened to the sad sounds of the bugler’s last post following the dedication and then the uplifting tones of the Reveille.

Planning the Hot Topic at Community Conversation
Planning was one of the biggest concerns raised by residents at Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Community Conversations evening in Canungra on Thursday 15th February. Mayor Greg Christensen gave an overview of several areas of Council’s plans and goals over the next few years in a public forum attended by approximately 40 residents and all Scenic Rim Councillors. “These Community Conversations aim to provide a clearer picture of how we operate and what informs our decision making,” said Mayor Christensen. He opened with an overview of the recovery process following infrastructure damage by ex-tropical cyclone Debbie in 2017. With over $38.5 million in repairs required, there are several works still underway and this has also caused delays to scheduled improvements in the Region. Mayor Christensen said funding has been sourced from State and Federal assistance for these repairs. Other topics covered included water storage, which Mayor Christensen said is a State Government issue, however he said Council can discuss projected growth in the region with the State Government as a planning strategy. He also emphasised that the management of Flying Fox roosts in the area is governed by the State Government. “They are a protected species and as such can be managed but not eliminated. If we move them on they will only move on to other areas,” he said.
The Community Conversation evening at Canungra State School
In his presentation, Mayor Christensen’s stated that ‘roads, rates and rubbish’ are no longer the sole expectation of Council by ratepayers, however, when it came to questions from the floor these were the topics raised. Several residents from Canungra and Beaudesert expressed concerns about developments in the Region. Although he was unable to comment on individual cases, Mayor Christensen said it is important residents have input into the proposed Local Government Infrastructure Plan which Council wants to incorporate into the three existing planning schemes. He emphasised the role that State Government planning schemes play in the approval
The Canungra Times - March 2018
of developments and said Councillors need to be aware of this legislative framework when considering new development applications. “If we do not work within that legal framework, we risk exposing Council to expensive court cases that we can not win,” he said. One question was raised about the relationship between rates and services in the Scenic Rim compared to Brisbane, which Mayor Christensen said was part of living in a low density, country area. The issue of high traffic volume in Christie Street and planning for a Canungra bypass was raised, however the Mayor said this was also a State Government matter.

Canungra State School
Bigger and Brighter Playground
Canungra State School opened in 2018 with a bigger, brighter playground at the front of the school. The School’s P&C Association worked hard to raise funds to replace the old playground, with the Canungra Country Fair a major source of fundraising for the project. In addition, a grant was received from the Smart Schools Subsidy and funds were donated by local businesses. A grand opening will be held once landscaping has been completed.

I have organised a group to meet on Sunday 4th March at 8am in the Moriarty Park carpark to clean up Moriarty Park, Canungra Creek bank, Lions Park and the streets around Canungra township. As in past years this should only take an hour at the most and we do have a few laughs along the way. To register simply go to the website -cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/join. The Canungra site name is Moriarty Park. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Congratulations to all the local sports players who were nominated throughout last year and special congratulations to Saxon Matena who won Sportsperson of the Year and Charlotte Flynn-Grant who won the Achiever of the Year award. For a small town we produce an impressive number of highly successful sports players in such an array of different sports.
have You aCCessed the dIsaster dashboard?
This is a new online resource designed to inform the Scenic Rim community before, during and after a major weather event or natural disaster. All the information is accessible on the same site - disasterdashboard.scenicrim.qld.gov.au or the Council website scenicrim.qld.gov.au. You will find information from the BOM (Bureau of Meteorology), Energex, QUU, road updates, power outages and evacuation and recovery centres. I found it very useful during the evening storm events last month to check the BOM and road conditions all on one site.

Comb-Crested Jacana (Irediparra Gallinacea) By Melissa Whitby
Our Heritage - Canungra School of Arts By Joyce Libke The Canungra School of Arts Hall in Pine Street, Canungra is the fourth building to be known as the Canungra School of Arts. The original Hall was built in 1886 across the creek on the hill going out of town by Lahey Brothers as a recreational building for their sawmill employees. Caningera State School was opened in 1889 using this building during the day. It became very inconvenient in wet weather as the teacher and her pupils were unable to cross the creek (no bridges). In 1901 the building was pulled down and re-erected on the present Hall site and school continued. The Education Department then obtained land from Mrs Duncan on the next ridge and built an official school. The School of Arts returned to its original functions - including dances and concerts. In 1912 a larger School of Arts of Gothic design was erected on the site. This hall served the Community well and housed the Memorial Plaque with the names of those who had enlisted for the 1914-1918 war. Unfortunately this hall burnt down in 1946. A building from the American Camp Cable was erected in the ‘car park’ and became a temporary hall. The community had regular dances, picture nights, concerts etc until the present day hall was erected in 1956 with the temporary hall then being used for roller skating and square dancing. (It was pulled down and rebuilt as a large shed on Finch’s dairy). The 1956 Canungra School of Arts boasted one of the best “crows ash” floors in the shire. With either Charlie Taylor’s or Madge Page’s orchestras in full swing it was possible to slide the full length of the dance floor whilst doing the Gypsy Tap. This is not possible now with the floor being a non-slip ‘safe’ floor. In the past decade various grants have been sourced to upgrade it to high modern standards.
One of the most unusual birds to inhabit the wetlands of Southeast Queensland is the Comb-crested Jacana. This bird is easily recognised by its large toes, red comb and broad black band across the chest. Male and female birds are similar to look at with the only difference being the female is bigger in size. Juvenile birds look similar to adults but are paler in colour. The Comb-crested Jacana is also known as the Lotusbird. These birds are often seen singly, in pairs or open groups in their preferred habitat. The best place to observe Comb-crested Jacanas is in wetland areas that have high densities of areas of floating aquatic vegetation, which the birds walk across. Interactions between the birds can be very noisy with squabbling and chasing involved. These birds predominately feed on aquatic insects. Comb-crested Jacanas inhabit wetland regions spanning from northern Western Australia through the Northern Territory into Queensland and New South Wales. Some of the most prolific populations of Comb-crested Jacanas can be observed in the wetland areas of northern Australia. This bird species is a very successful breeder and female birds can lay four eggs in a nest, which is placed on floating vegetation. A female bird may mate with several males who alone build the nest, incubate the eggs Comb-crested Jacana and cares for the chicks. The breeding season of the Combcrested Jacana varies dependent on whether it lives in northern or southern Australia. One of the best places to see Comb-crested Jacanas is on the well-vegetated lagoons around the Robina and Mudgeeraba areas. The birds are easily recognised by literally looking like they are walking on water over the water lily pads. Overall the Combcrested Jacana is a common species and in the right habitat is relatively easy to see. It is always a delight for me to observe this bird in its natural environment and to marvel at its extraordinary habits. I sincerely hope that I have inspired others to be on the lookout for this most unusual bird species!

Free Workshops For Landowners
Scenic Rim Regional Council is supporting rural landowners in their efforts to reduce erosion and improve the quality of Scenic Rim waterways by offering two free workshops next month. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen urged landowners, particularly graziers, to learn more about improving water quality and soil retention through the workshops at Boonah on Wednesday 14th March and Canungra on Thursday 15th March. “Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie confirmed to me - and to many other people in the Scenic Rim and wider south-east Queensland region - the challenges we face in maintaining the health of our lands and waterways,” he said. “Much of our prosperity in the Scenic Rim, from our key industries of agriculture and tourism, derives from our spectacular scenery and healthy environment. “So when we see a farmer whose centre pivot paddock has been stripped of a metre of precious topsoil by floodwaters or a river bank which, almost overnight, has been realigned by six to eight metres through an extreme weather event, we know that accelerated action is called for. “These workshops offer practical solutions to protect our creeks and gullies and help landowners maintain their most valuable asset - their soil.” Council, through its Environmental Grants Program, has supported groups and individuals in rehabilitating riparian areas and preventing erosion through tree planting and the eradication of weeds. “However, without the commitment of landowners, we can achieve only so much,” Cr Christensen said. “While many of the problems we face today are the legacy of well-intentioned settlement activity, our focus must be on the future.” The free workshops, from 9am to noon, with morning tea included, will be held at The Outlook Boonah on Wednesday 14th March and the Canungra School of Arts Hall on Thursday 15th March from 9am to noon. RSVP by 12th March by visiting https://erosionand-creek-management.eventbrite.com.au or by contacting Dennis Gannaway on 0407 001 916 or Dennis.g@hlw.org.au.
A Loranthaceae mistletoe in the Lamington National Park. Credit: Susan Cully.
Beautiful Mistletoes
By Susan Cully Many people have the mistaken belief that mistletoes growing on trees and plants in the garden are pests and will kill the host plant. This is not true. They are simply another beautiful plant to welcome into the garden. They are attractive and will bring a multitude of showy butterflies and moths to them. Mistletoes provide food for Delias (Jezebel) and Ogyris (Azure) butterflies. John T Moss has written a chapter about mistletoes in Mangroves to Mountains, A Field Guide to the Native Plants of South-east Queensland. He writes that they occur in all forest types, but are most common in dry sclerophyll forests and vine scrubs. There are also at least two species found on mangroves and six species found in rainforest communities. Mistletoes add to the plant biodiversity of many vegetation communities and their often spectacular flowers can add a touch of colour to an otherwise uniform green canopy. Some species of mistletoe are host specific and will only be found on one species, genus or family. Others are less specific and can be found on many species in several families. Certain mistletoes have foliage which resemble their host plants, ie needle like leaves when parasitising Casuarinas. The evolutionary origins of this are not completely known: it is surmised that it affords the mistletoes some protection from animal browsers such as possums. The very sticky seeds are carried on the fur and feathers of animals and birds that transfer them to new plants while grooming. The seed, once deposited, will extend a root-like structure that actually drills into the growing layers of the host. It is believed the relationship is not only parasitic but supplies the host plant with benefits as well. Unless the host tree is very heavily infested with mistletoe or is stressed, it will cope quite well with its guests.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough What does it mean to be enthusiastic? It doesn’t matter what you apply your enthusiasm to, it is definitely a way to boost the way you feel about something, on the way you apply yourself to a task. Do you feel enthusiastic about going to your place of work, or do you feel excited about your next social activity, your next holiday or perhaps the next task you have before you. Think of the salesperson selling their products. If they are enthusiastic and excited about what they are doing, then that belief will rub off on their customers or clientele. At St Luke’s we are a very enthusiastic bunch of like-minded people. We enjoy attending St Luke’s because we enjoy being together as a congregation. We enjoy listening to Rev Valerie as she leads us; we enjoy singing hymns, caring for each other and we enjoy socializing with a cuppa after each Sunday service. We also meet on the last Friday evening of each month to enjoy some friendship together. Coming up on Saturday 10th March we have plans in place for the annual St Luke’s Car Boot Sale commencing at 7.00am in the church grounds. We are very enthusiastic about this event and we hope you will join us to either set up a stall or come to buy a book, a cake, or a cuppa, or a sausage in bread. Of course, there will be many things to purchase and enjoy. Why not bring your enthusiasm and feel excited about what is on offer? You can’t go wrong!

WARNING DEFENCE PRACTICE AREA CANUNGRA FIELD TRAINING AREA QUEENSLAND
TRAINING AREA/RANGE NOISE NOTICE Residents to areas surrounding the Canungra Field Training Area are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect periods of heightened noise volume. Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition, explosives, simulation devices and lasers that generally occur daily between 0700h – 1600h. Night time practices also occur and are generally completed before 2200h. During these core operating hours, residence in the surrounding areas may experience louder than normal noise levels. Defence now has the capability to notify residences of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residence of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over a prescribed period of time. If you wish to be included in this notification process please contact range control on (07) 5618 6270 and provide your name and mobile number. Canungra Owls Soccer Club By Rachel Mathers There has never been a better year for members of our community to come together and enjoy the greatest game in the world! We’re looking forward to Saturday mornings, where ALL of our younger teams play on the same morning and older teams play of an evening, with the community coming together to cheer them on. The canteen will be serving comfort food and hot chocolates to keep you warm during the winter evenings and bacon and egg rolls and coffee to wake you up on those early mornings! This year we have introduced a new club shirt/jersey. Our Miniroo and U12 players will get to keep theirs and wear them whenever they want (as long as they wear them to games!). These new shirts are largely in part to our wonderful local sponsors Bendigo Bank, Aussie Lifestyle Properties, The Outpost Café, Australian Lawn Concepts, Funky Dory Diner and Australia Post. We look forward to everyone at our Club wearing the same uniform and representing our Club with pride. You may have noticed some improvements at Moriarty Park recently. The latest include the field upgrades comprising aeration and fertilizing to ensure the surface stands up to another season of soccer. Thank you to Scenic Rim Regional Council for funding support through their Sport and Recreation Grant Program. The installation of fencing between the playground area and creek zone is another

welcome addition to help ensure the safety of our kids whilst they are enjoying the playground or fitness equipment at the grounds. Thank you to the Community Benefit Gambling Fund for funding this project. Both Canungra Owls and Moriarty Park Committee work tirelessly to ensure the facility is a great place to host a variety of sporting and recreational events and enjoy with family and friends, providing a valuable asset to the Canungra Community. For the second year in a row, the Owls have hosted a Small Sided Referee course as well as an Assistant Referee course and
as a result, we have doubled the number of qualified club officials. It takes a lot of courage to referee a game at any level and I’m excited to be able to watch our young officials grow in confidence as the season progresses. I also want to give a shout out to Glenn Russell for committing to the club and helping us develop our young players – your guidance, encouragement and obvious love of your job is appreciated. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for information on home games – we’d love to see you at Moriarty Park supporting your local club … hoot hoot!

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby We already have three nominees for the 2018 FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year. These were 2017 monthly winners who added massively to their achievements. Amy Mathers: Amy is an incredible young lady, displaying many attributes and talents. In October Amy played in the Jacaranda Cup in futsal never having met any of her team mates and they went on to win SILVER! Amy was also the only female to try out for Gold Coast Futsal Representative team in November, making it through to second round of trials – no mean feat! At the end of last year Amy attended Gold Coast United FC Under 10 Skills Acquisition Program (SAP); four sessions in two weeks and was successful! So now as well as being a valued Owls player in the Saturday morning competition, refereeing when shes not playing, helping wherever she can, she is also an official Gold Coast United FC player! Matildas here we come! Asiya Hickey: Asiya began training in Muay Thai with David Torrens early last year and took to it like a duck to water. She had her first fight and indeed first win in a charity event at Beenleigh PCYC and loved it! She went on this year on Australia Day weekend to participate representing Canungra Muay Thai Club in the Australian National Muay Thai Kickboxing Tournament. Asiya had worked very hard with her coach David and won Gold for Australia! Asiya has been selected to represent Australia in Thailand in the World Championships in August this year. On Sunday 18th February, Asiya along with team members from Canungra participated in the mat sport WAKO at Canungra School of Arts; Asiya bringing home another GOLD! Well done !
Morgan Lee: This talented young lady needs no introducing as we have been so proud of her outstanding achievements and successes for some time now! She continues to amaze us all and had some great news on the Awards night that she is now trialling for our Commonwealth Games! Magic news! Last year Morgan competed in the QLD Sprint Championships closely followed by the QLD School Swimming Championships achieving an admirable second in 100m multiclass breaststroke. April saw Morgan competing in the Australian Swimming Champs and qualifying for the Qld Shortcourse Championships and then to top off the year she was off to Adelaide for the Pacific School Games where she brilliantly earned third in 100m Breaststroke; sixth in 50m Butterfly; second in Medley Relay and forth in Freestyle! Read more of Morgans talents and achievements soon! Please notify Bren (contact details below) of any outstanding sporting local achievers who can be nominated for a Sportsperson of the Month award with a $50 FoodWorks voucher and a $50 Sportys voucher donated by FoodWorks. Some may have noticed a new fence from behind the tennis courts to the skate park. This was imperative for the safety of younger members of the community whilst playing on the play park. We were very nervous about so much beautiful shrubbery is in close proximity to the play area and the creek on the other side of it. Canungra Owls Soccer Club applied for the grant to pay for this fence which was constructed by our own Town and Country Fencing with the remainder being very kindly offered by Arkwood Christian Association (aka Canungra Op Shop). A sincerely necessary project successfully completed. Well done and thanks to all! Moriarty Park will hold their AGM on the Tuesday 17th April and whilst all positions will be declared vacant, the position I know we have no nominees for, and one which is imperative to fill, is Treasurer. Please, if you think you can spare a couple of hours a month to balance the books, help us out!
