LA RÉVOLUTION ÉLECTRIQUE Je ne sais pas pas exactement quand c’est arrivé. Je veux dire que je n’ai jamais été de ceux qui haïssent les “vélos électriques”. Si j’ai pu me donner la peine de réfléchir à cela, j’ai dû penser que plus il y a de personnes qui arrivent à se détacher de leurs écrans et tablettes, et qui sortent dans la nature pour répondre à l’appel des sentiers et apprécier la beauté des sous-bois, on ne peut que s’en féliciter. Mais pour moi, les vélos électriques, c’était bon pour les autres. Ne me demandez pas ce que ça signifie, je croyais simplement qu’ils n’étaient pas faits pour moi. J’ai passé ma vie sur deux roues depuis le jour où on a retiré les roulettes de mon vélo d’enfant, et faire du vélo a toujours été pour moi synonyme de dépassement, physiquement, mentalement, de tester mes capacités pour voir quelle vitesse je pourrais atteindre ou quelle distance je pourrais réaliser. Être motorisé ne correspondait pas à ma façon de vivre. Sans compter que, mêmes si les VTT électriques que j’ai essayé auparavant étaient plaisants... Ils étaient en même temps déplaisants. Bien sûr, disposer de toute cette puissance était plutôt agréable, mais une fois le charme de la nouveauté passé, je n’avais pas vraiment l’impression de faire du vélo. C’était aussi amusant que d’installer un moteur de tondeuse à gazon sur un caddie... de la vitesse sans aucun doute... mais un certain manque de contrôle.

Mais après un moment à rouler sur ce sentier tortueux, escarpé et affolant, un sentier de
haute montagne gigantesque sur lequel nous testions ce nouveau vélo, j’ai arrêté de penser à la motorisation, à la conduite, au centre de gravité abaissé et à toutes les autres caractéristiques dont m’avaient parlé les ingénieurs. J’ai arrêté d’être conscient de la sensation bizarre d’avoir à freiner dans les tournants en montée. J’ai arrêté de penser au fait que je roulais sur un vélo à assistance électrique. J’ai arrêté de penser, un point c’est tout. Il ne s’agissait plus que de conduite pure, de vitesse pure, d’action non-stop. À pleins gaz partout. Dans chaque ligne droite, dans chaque virage, entièrement concentré sur le terrain. Respiration et rythme cardiaque au maximum. Monter, descendre, se fondre en un flux continu, aspiré par le prochain tronçon, puis le suivant, et encore le suivant. Et je ne me suis pas arrêté. Je crois que j’aime cette machine...
