HELEN GROBERT
EVER PRESENT Talk to Helen Grobert for just a few minutes, look into her eyes, watch her interact with her teammates and fans, and you cannot help but see something special. At just 25 years of age, the self-described “Black Forest girl” shows a level of patience and insight and wisdom that should be reserved for someone several times her age. And yet the excitement she exudes is pure and infectious. It’s quickly clear that not only is she a force to be reckoned with on a mountain bike, Grobert is absolutely present in every moment. Before becoming a mountain biker, Helen’s first love was horses. Her parents encouraged her to try other sports, too. It seemed to her that riding a mountain bike was pretty close to riding horses, so she gave it a try. Her original goal of ‘one time per week’ quickly grew to two, three, four…. She was hooked on mountain biking. Grobert’s connection to horses is still strong, and incredibly important. She owned her own pony, and later was given the chance to care for retired racehorses. In them, she saw powerful, sensitive, emotional athletes with whom she developed strong connections. Good racehorses need to be strong natural athletes, sure, but they only become great when the team around them is strong and supportive. In her new Cannondale Factory Racing team, Helen feels that she has truly found a home. “This is the first time, in a team, that I can be who I am,” she says. Who she is, is a rider who revels in every moment of mountain bike racing, whether it is on the track or off. And the ability with her new team to “celebrate all these special things” that go along with racing — kid fans, grown-up fans, fellow competitors, sponsors, media, venues — motivates her that much more. Her results with Cannondale definitely reflect that. Helen Grobert is an incredible asset to the sport of mountain biking and we are proud to have her as part of the Cannondale family. We can’t wait to see what’s next for this “Black Forest girl.”

CHASING A LINE We turn onto what is more path than road, tiny among the great redwoods that vanish into distant points in the sky. We hit dirt connectors and secret roads where we surge over rollers and startle the cows and attack and then shout jokes over the wind as we descend in fluid effortlessness; where I don’t know what numbers I “should” be hitting but I can see the ocean and how the waves froth over black mussels on the cliffs and how I’m closing to Tony’s wheel with Max and Adam on mine.
