CANNON SPOTLIGHT
Billy Knox FSS Employee - Community CenterQ: How long have you worked at the Community Center?
A: I started 2018 or 2019. So, three or four years.
Q: What is your job here at the Community Center?
A: The title is ‘Recreational Aid’. Sounds fancy, I know. I hang out and make sure everyone has a good time, that no one steals anything, and if anything goes wrong, I’m there to fix it. I get to hang out with the Airmen and make them laugh. I enjoy it.
Q: Q: What is the purpose of the Community Center and what do you offer to Cannon?
A: The purpose of the Community Center definitely has to be just to give everyone somewhere to be. If you look at the base, when a fresh Airmen gets here, nearest thing to do that’s fun is two hours away, or you could come here. You could sit down at gaming PC’s or new gaming consoles, and you can just relax. On top of that it is a great place to find other people that are into the things you like. So, I think we are a hotspot to make connections. As for what we offer, just a little bit of everything. We provide fun and good company.
Q: Do you have any favorite events that the Community Center has hosted?
A: I really liked doing the Willy Wonka event. That one was wild. I always enjoy doing the tournaments though. When we’re doing Smash tournaments, it’s fun to see everyone of all ages just come and “throw hands” and have a good time.
Q: What’s one thing you would say makes the Community Center unique?
A: Definitely the people. Just anyone who comes in or anyone who works here. They are some of the most unique people I have ever met. And I mean that in the best way. Everyone is their own individual. No one is just trying to be normal. They’re here to have fun and I love that.
Q: Can you list some of the consoles you guys provide for those who come in?
A: I can list them all. We have WiiU’s, Switches, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox X, PS4’s and PS5’s, we have some PS3’s around here somewhere. We have the Oculus. We have actual built gaming PC’s, so you can come in and play some of the games that aren’t just going to move at like, 3 bits a second. We as a center do not provide card decks. But, depending on who’s working depends on who plays what. We do try to interact if we can. We have family board games under the TV like Monopoly. We also have some more like, teenage young adult and adult boardgames up top [above the cabinets]. Like, we have “DnD: The Adventure Begins”, which is a board game variant of DnD (Dungeons and Dragons). If you’re going to play the real thing, we have the books for all the character creation. A game that I didn’t think I was going to like because it sounded weird is called “Exploding Kittens”, that is hilarious if you ever get a chance, I highly recommend that one. We have darts. Obviously, we have a ping-pong table. And an in-house theater.
Q: There is also a recording studio here as well?
A: Yes. We do have a full recording studio and it is pretty popular. People can go in there, and I’ve seen them start with [taps a slow beat on the table] and they can use these different media modifiers and they’ve made full beats. I’ve heard some of the best beats made by someone who came in because they were bored. Then on the other side of the wall, we actually have a room with a whole bunch of instruments. We have a keyboard, drums, different guitars and basses. I think we have a ukulele in there.
A: Why be in your room bored when you could be here?
Q: Do you have any last comments or thoughts?
