The CANSO CDM and A-CDM Symposium will bring together key aviation stakeholders to work towards a common goal of implementing the Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) and Airport-CDM (A-CDM) models across Africa. This will assist aviation stakeholders in viewing each other as partners and working together towards the end objective of delivering safe, efficient and sustainable air transport services for the public. The Symposium will also explain the difference between CDM and A-CDM and how they benefit the airport operators, aircraft operators, ATC and ground handlers. It will highlight the benefits of implementing the use of CDM to improve Air Traffic Management (ATM) for flights between city pairs and finally, the Symposium will demonstrate the efficiency gains achievable through the integration of airport and en-route CDM. Establishing best practice for other city pairs in the AFI region is another Symposium goal.

DIRECTOR AFRICA AFFAIRS, CANSO – MS BONI DIBATE Based in Johannesburg, Ms Dibate is responsible for CANSO’s activities and initiatives in Africa. She represents the interests of CANSO and its members to promote and facilitate the development of air navigation services in the region. She also represents CANSO and the ATM industry across the region with governmental and industry bodies.

ABOUT YOUR HOST – ATNS Air Traffic and Navigation Services SOC Limited (ATNS) provides air traffic, navigation, training and associated services within South Africa. ATNS is responsible for Air Traffic Control (ATC) throughout South Africa and a large part of the Southern Indian and Atlantic Ocean, comprising approximately 10% of the world’s airspace. ATNS operates from nine ACSA and 12 other aerodromes. As a globally-competitive employer of choice, ATNS is committed to diversity and has achieved ranking within the top 10 companies in South Africa with regard to female representation at executive levels. VISION To be the preferred supplier of Air Traffic Management solutions and associated services to the African Continent and selected international markets.

CANSO AFRICA REGION The CANSO Africa Region was established in 2012. Its vision is to achieve a safe, seamless and harmonised airspace across Africa. CANSO’s goal in Africa is to help Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) provide services that are universally safe, technically interoperable, procedurally harmonised, efficient, and affordable. Africa poses many challenges for the Air Traffic Management (ATM) industry and different levels of variation exist among CANSO Members with regard to levels of traffic density, traffic complexity, and ATM infrastructure. CANSO helps its Members by providing a platform of collaboration across Africa and by sharing information, best practices and standards of excellence. We provide training courses and seminars on key issues such as safety and the implementation of ICAO’s Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBUs).

MISSION To provide safe, expeditious and efficient Air Traffic Management solutions and associated services. Our services extend beyond Air Traffic Control services into the provision of vitallyimportant aeronautical information used for all flight planning purposes as well as search and rescue coordination activities, and the maintenance of a reliable navigation infrastructure.

Collaborative partnerships are critical to the success of CANSO’s work in Africa. We work jointly with ICAO, Member States and the air transport industry to improve aviation in Africa. The Africa CANSO CEO Committee (AFC3) governs and directs CANSO’s work in Africa, within the framework of CANSO global policies and positions. AFC3 is supported by the Director Africa Affairs and a number of workgroups that deal with a wide range of issues and finding sustainable solutions for them.

WELCOME TO DURBAN! Durban or eThekwini which is the Zulu word meaning ‘bay’ or ‘lagoon’ is a diverse South African city situated in the KwaZuluNatal province. As a vibrant, multicultural coastal hub, filled with delicious food and countless outdoor and recreational activities Durban is the perfect location for the CANSO CDM & A-CDM Symposium.

ATTRACTIONS MUSEUMS/ARCHITECTURE Vasco da Gama Memorial In the heart of the Victoria Embankment (now known as Margaret Mncadi Avenue) stands the Vasco da Gama memorial in honour of the Portuguese explorer’s first sighting of Durban. Its cast-iron dome shape and intricate design are a fine example of Victorian baroque design and an absolute historical must-see. Emmanuel Cathedral The beautiful Emmanuel Cathedral is part of Durban’s landscape, tucked rather snuggly into Cathedral Street against the prominent flyover of the N3 highway just as it descends into the centre of town. The Roman Catholic Cathedral, designed by South African architect Street Wilson, its cross carved out of Carrara marble all the way from Italy, a gift from Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III of France. No amount of noise and hustle could detract from the sheer magnificence of the architectural features.

KwaZulu-Natal is a world in one province: to the North of Durban you will find the best in African game reserves and pristine beaches, to the West lie the majestic Drakensberg Mountains and temperate Midlands while to the South there await superb golf courses, fishing spots and miles of subtropical coastline. Durban boasts a population of 3.5 million, is the biggest city on the Indian Ocean coast of the African continent and the biggest container port in Africa. It contains numerous attractions and truly has something for everyone. Visitors are spoilt for choice with a wide range of activities that include shopping, sampling some of the most exciting foods around (try the Bunny-chow!) and of course, taking part in a huge array of outdoor adventures.

OUTDOOR uShaka Marine World At the end of Durban’s Golden Mile is the beginning of uShaka Marine World – spanning over 15 hectares of prime beach front, uShaka Marine World is Africa’s largest marine theme park and boasts the fifth largest aquarium in the world. Enjoy fun at Sea World, have a memorable meal at any one of the many restaurants (including the amazing Shark Restaurant, situated in the themed shipwreck with a window into a shark tank), and go shopping in over 11 250m² of retail space featuring clothing boutiques, outdoor gear and arts and crafts. Moses Mabhida Stadium The Moses Mabhida Stadium is located adjacent to the ABSA Stadium in the Kings Park Sporting Precinct and is a world class multi-purpose stadium which was used for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Named after the renowned political activist and South African Communist Party politician, this stadium is not only a architectural marvel but provides the opportunity to see Durban in a whole new light from the stadium’s SkyCar and you can even test your mettle as you jump from the stadium’s apex with the world’s tallest swing.

Gandhi Centenary Park Right in the centre of Chatsworth – a former township from the apartheid era – stands an open public space known as Gandhi Centenary Park, a beautiful breathing space in the midst of a humming and commercial neighbourhood. The park was named in memory of the centenary of famous activist Mohandas (Mohatma) Karamchand Gandhi’s arrival in South Africa.

These can then be used for comparison purposes to support the transformation of global ATM performance. The GBWG produces the annual Global Air Navigation Services Performance Report that provides participating Members with performance information on productivity, cost-effectiveness and price, revenue and profitability. This group conducts an annual benchmarking exercise to produce the CANSO Global Air Navigation Services Performance Report. The report enables Members to compare performance in productivity, cost-effectiveness, pricing, revenue and profitability, and also provides evidence of improvements in global ATM performance.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT TO DURBAN

NOTES

CURRENCY The official currency in South Africa is the Rand (R). OFFICIAL LANGUAGE • The official language for the Symposium is English. • South Africa has 11 official languages, however, the predominant language spoken in Durban is isiZulu (77.8%) and English (13.3%). ELECTRICITY SUPPLY Electrical sockets in South Africa usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you’re plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need. The most common plug is a 15 amp three-pin plug. WEATHER Durban in March is still very warm and humid so it is advisable to pack light summer clothing. Note that it also rains frequently and strong winds can be experienced, so packing a sturdy umbrella and a water-resistant parka or coat is also advisable.
