ARCHITECTURE FACULTY BUILDING

2018/istanbul-kağıthane with Umut Iyigün architecture faculty

7

Project develops around the idea of void. The central gallery space is designed to house all the gathering activities, especially the heart of architectural education; the exhibitions. The central stairs also as a recreational area. The core of architectural training studio project space is seperated from the main buildig. The connection is sustained with a bridge. The seperation is the physical representation of the emphasis on studio time. Moving from the belief that architectural education starts with interaction; the learning spaces are placed around the gallery, supporting the idea of communication. Also, the concept of ‘wall’ is avoided in learning areas. Instead, folding panels are used to enhance flexibility.

KAĞITHANE MASTERPLAN

2018/istanbul-kağıthane with Umut Iyigün urban planning/development of land

15

Located in Istanbul, Kağıthane is a district inclined for urban development. Known for being the industrial area in Istanbul after 1950s and the heart of the city during Ottoman Empire, Kağıthane can be described as one of the centers of Istanbul metropolitan area. With a river running through the district, the area lacks social infrastructure and public space. The masterplan intervention aims to keep the existing housing blocks and renovate the areas near by the river. Minimum of 15 m from the river to both sides is defined as the public green area. The scattered pattern of the buildings are placed on a grid system with various heights, two centers have been developed according to transportational focal points. The project aims to include the residents of Kağıthane in an ongoing urban experience.

ON GRID VERTICAL HOUSING

2017/madrid-gran via with Lukas Staudinger & Katrin BrĂźnjes housing, market place, mixed use

19

Project includes market place, jazz bar, shops, sports center and housing. The two buildings resolve around a regular geometry, sitting on a grid. Buildings occupy half of the given project area, creating a public square in front. Columns inside and trees outside sit on a grid, dividing the project area into identical squares, supporting the idea of continuity, also making a smooth transition. The market building acts as a pavilion of the housing block. The aim is to create an environment where public and private coexist but does not mix in ‘semi public’ group.

HOUSING FOR IMMIGRANTS

2016.2017/athens-exarcheia with Lukas Staudinger & Katrin BrĂźnjes housing, media library

27

The project aims to provide a housing for immigrants. The two main ideas of the project are the following; social proximity can be accepted best at labor commitment and the advantage of public space can be taken only when an additional function is given to that space. The occupants of the housing work in the media library section of the building. Project puts the idea of courtyard in the center, strengthening it by the common terraces on each floor. Each apartment unit has a different layout, corresponding to the needs of the occupants. The building aims to create a spontaneous social mix with buffer zones between Greek and non Greek residents.

ARCHITECTURE FACULTY LIBRARY

2017/istanbul-taksim with Hülya Kuş library, construction project

37

The building layout is determined by two U-shaped slabs positioned facing opposite of eachother. The U shape enables the idea of void in the middle, creating a depth. The south facade has the optimum ratio of openings in order to control the heat gain from the sun while the north facade is fully glazed to get the maximum efficiency from the sun light. Window openings are kept in a regular order, each of them being 1m wide. The library sustains the feeling of order and harmony by the use of material and posititoning of the building elements thus creating a perfect environment for studying.

REPETITIVE MODULES

2018/taksim-taşkışla with Umut İyigün modul work, pavilion

41

pavilion diaries

Hey!How you doin’?

february 2018, no:3 / Istanbul,Taksim The spontaneous union of modules formed by equilateral triangles. The modules come together in a manner to form free time activity units, lighting fixtures and decorative elements. The modules spread through stairs to upstairs, carrying the feeling of spontaneity everywhere.

Fine thanks! Looking for our groupmate, we have to start working on the project, I have some ideas that I want to share...

We were looking for you, are u upstairs?

Hey, over here!

Yep, just having a snack... I have to admit I’m a bit stressed about this project, glad that we are together and ready to discuss our ideas, you know it will be too disorganized otherwise...

Cool, I checked some examples online to have an idea, too bad that I don’t have any motivation... Don’t worry, it will workout fine

Where should we study, I’m a bit hungry..

Tell me about your ideas, let’s get this done Oh okay, you can get something from vending machine We should go upstairs

42

I have some stuff about the model actually

We can get some inspiration from here, see the equilateral triangles?

The textures are different, some modules become lighting fixtures for the stairs

The modules get smaller in proportion and spread over the stairs

I’m taking something to eat, u want some?

Yep, wait I’m coming!

Can’t find a better place to relax now...

Yeah here looks perfect! Four equilateral triangles form one module, the union angles are decrease by 15 each time

THE END

Where did our group mate go? Never mind, he will come...
