The City and the Playground

graduation project 2018.2019-kadıköy/istanbul Istanbul Technical University

Childhood of a Place Childhood of a Generation

central courtyard

The project required to focus on new modes of living in Kadıköy, the coastal area in Istanbul. New modes of living addressed housing and another function that would enhance the community life there as more collaborative.

The design aims to create an environment which focuses on learning. To create spaces for provocation to learn; early childhood education spaces are used as inspiration. Early childhood education means the notion of playing is integrated with the notion of learning. The project treats the space as a walkthrough park, a playground and adds the act of learning as spontaneity. Movement, interaction and exploration are set as three elements of life that should be sustained during the whole 6

course of the project. Brutal and interventional playground elements are developed to support these notions both for indoors and outdoors. Treatment of the space and the city breaks the hierarchy that stands in the way of the urban tissue.

The playground elements are not isolated and are far from being decorative. They give way to the imagination by glorifying the three notions and thus learning becomes blended in time and space. The playground elements can stand alone or come together as clusters depending on the character of the location on the shore. The feeling of play becomes contagious, moving along the shore as small, combinable playground elements and finally covering the whole coastal area. 10

The main courtyard is the urban stage where performances can take place. The residences are configured in the towers. Three types of residences are present for the sake of simplicity. Even the smallest housing unit sustains the sense of play and movement by small elements. Closed walls are avoided as much as possible both on the ground floor and housing units. The idea of playing borne the idea of the unbuilt, the collective conscioussness and the non-event.

Architecture Faculty Building

7th semester architectural design project 2018-kagithane/istanbul Istanbul technical University

main approach

The project required to design an educational building in Kağıthane, a near water district in Istanbul. The project is the after step of the master planning project of Kağıthane.

The general project approach is shifted from designing the solid to designing the void. Heart of the project, the central gallery is designed to act as a meeting point, house the gathering activities, such as the exhibitionsthe core of architectural education. The stairs from gallery space to upper floor support this quality of the gallery as being also a recreational area. The ateliers, where the majority of the architectural training is done, is separated from the main building.

22

The connection is sustained by a bridge. The separation aims to solidify the emphasis on studio time. Moving from the viewpoint that says education starts with interaction, the learning spaces are placed around the gallery-supporting the idea of communication. To go further on with exploring flexibility, the concept of ‘wall’ is avoided and folding panels are used as separators.

Kagithane Masterplan

The project required to do a master planning for the region of Kagithane, a district inclined for urban development, in Istanbul.

7th semester urban planning/development of land 2018-kagithane/istanbul Istanbul Technical University

Known for being the center of the industrial area in Istanbul after the 1950s and the heart of the city during the Ottoman Empire, Kagithane can be described as one of the centers of Istanbul metropolitan area. With a river running through the district, the area lacks social infrastructure and public space. The masterplan intervention aims to keep the existing housing blocks and replan the areas near the river. Minimum of 15 m from the river to both sides is defined

28

as the public green area. The scattered pattern of the buildings are placed on a grid system with various heights, two centers have been developed according to transportation focal points. The project aims to include the residents of KaÄ&#x;Äąthane in ongoing urban experience.

On Grid Vertical Housing

The project required to design a housing complex on the bustling city center of Madrid, Gran Via. The housing complex required an additional function that would sustain the fabric of Madrid’s most famous street.

6th semester architectural design project 2017-madrid/spain BTU Cottbus-Germany

The project includes a market place, jazz bar, sports center, and the housing complex. The two buildings revolve around a regular geometry, sitting on a grid. Buildings occupy half of the given project area, creating a public square in front. Columns inside and trees outside sit on a grid, dividing the project area into identical squares, supporting the idea of continuity as to symbolize the continuation of the heat of Gran Via and making a smooth transition from street to the project area.

32

The market building acts as a pavilion of the housing block. The aim is to create an environment where public and private coexist but does not mix in an undefined ‘semi-public’ group.

Housing for Immigrants

The project required to design a housing building in Athens, Exarcheia, where the neighborhood population has become diversified with immigration.

5th semester architectural design project 2016.2017-athens/greece BTU Cottbus-Germany

The project aims to provide housing for immigrants. The two main ideas of the project are the following: social proximity can be accepted best at labor commitment and the advantage of public space can be taken only when an additional function is given to that space. The occupants of the housing work in the media library section of the building. The design puts the idea of a courtyard in the center, strengthening it by the common terraces on each floor. Each apartment unit

38

has a different layout, corresponding to the needs of the occupants. The building aims to create a spontaneous social mix with buffer zones between Greek and non-Greek residents.

Architecture Faculty Library

6th semester construction project 2017-taksim/istanbul Istanbul Technical University

gallery space

The project required to design the architecture faculty library on a plot near the architecture school. The design focused mainly on construction details.

The building layout is determined by two U-shaped slabs positioned facing opposite of each other. The U shape enables the idea of a void in the middle, creating a depth. The south facade has the optimum ratio of openings in order to control the heat gain from the sun while the north facade is fully glazed to get the maximum efficiency from the sun light. Window openings are kept in a regular order, each of the being 1 m wide.

46

The library sustains the feeling of order and harmony by the use of material and positioning of the building elements, thus creating a perfect environment for studying.
