You can get into sport.

Sport and active health are exciting parts of the Christ Church experience. The University’s multi-million-pound Sports Centre has the latest fitness equipment and offers affordable gym and recreational sport memberships, a full range of fitness classes, and a personal training service. We also provide a range of free programmes including Couch to 5k, a running club and outdoor boot camp classes in partnership with Our Parks to help you stay active and healthy.

At Christ Church you will find a wide range of club sports on offer; many of our teams regularly compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sports leagues and a variety of other competitions, including the annual Varsity event.

You’ll also have access to our joint specialist facility, Polo Farm Sports Club. Just a short distance from the Canterbury Campus, the facilities include three floodlit hockey pitches, an indoor tennis centre, outdoor tennis courts and a spacious new sports hall, specialising in netball, hockey and cricket. The University has five grass sports pitches for football and rugby, and through partnership with local clubs we offer golf, kayaking, equestrian, trampoline and athletics facilities.

Fitness opportunities

Open seven days a week and featuring the latest equipment, our Sports Centre has something for everyone. Whether you’re serious about training and competing, or would just like to be more active and get a little fitter, you’ll have access to our interactive spin studio, wide-ranging exercise class programme, modern gym, climbing wall and double sports hall.

Learn to coach

We work with various national governing bodies of sport to offer a range of sport specific coaching and officiating courses, giving you the skills and academic knowledge you need to coach or referee competently. These qualifications are also great for enhancing your career prospects and finding a job doing what you love. In particular, the skills gained from building relationships and tailoring your approach to the needs of a diverse community are useful for anyone seeking out a role in sports development.

You can be a Sport Scholar.

If you’re talented at sport, you can apply for one of our sport scholarships. As a Sport Scholar, you’d enjoy a financial bursary,

University gym membership, personal training, mentoring, sports science support and an environment that will help you to achieve both your sporting and academic potential.

Additionally, the University is recognised by Sport England’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme as a Dual Career Accredited Site which acknowledges an enhanced level of academic flexibility allowing talented athletes to balance their studies alongside a sporting schedule.

Sport scholarships are available in a range of sports, including disability sport. We have relationships with several high-profile clubs which enable us to offer Elite Scholarships, including Canterbury Rugby Club and Canterbury Cricket Club, where talented athletes may combine playing a high standard of sport with their University studies.

My experience with the Sport Scholarship Programme has been very positive. One of the things that helped me the most was the readily available support from staff at the Sports Lab, with testing which helped me keep track of my progress during the training and competition season.
