Dear Canterbury Community, The 2015-2016 school year was a momentous year for our great school - one that was full of growth on many fronts. Not only were we strong in academics and enrollment, but we also exceeded our fundraising goals for the Canterbury Fund. Over the summer, we tackled two ambitious projects to improve our campus. A new roof was installed on the Lois Shakarian James school building. We also expanded the Mason Goss Field to provide more space for our growing athletic program, with many thanks to the Swanson and Dean families for their support. Most importantly, over the past year we have seen a renewed sense of pride in our school and its history. Our campus life is full of spirit!

Rick Kirschner Head of Schol

With this Annual Report, we want to recognize and celebrate those who have given their time, talent, and treasure to our school. Your investment directly supports our excellent faculty and enriches the experience of all of our students. From new technology to field trips, even the support we provide through our College Guidance Department - everything we do is made possible through the Canterbury Fund. Thank you to each and every member of our community - students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends. No one factor can account for the success of our great school, but without the generous spirit of our entire community, Canterbury School would not be the school it is today. Sincerely,

Rick Kirschner Head of School

The Canterbury School is dedicated to academic excellence within a caring and supportive community, emphasizing character, leadership, and service.

Message from the BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Chauncey Goss, Chairman Board of Trustees

Thank You for Your Service and Support! Canterbury School extends its deepest appreciation to the following outgoing trustees who have devoted their countless hours and valuable perspective in support of our mission. Mrs. Kellie Burns-Garvey Mrs. Ronda Dean Mr. Michael Devito Mrs. Carolyn Hornung Mr. Charles Idelson Mr. Louis Rosellini Mrs. Sara Stensrud

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year and thank you for entrusting the education of your children to the Canterbury School. With Rick Kirschner enthusiastically and confidently leading us forward in his second year as Head of School, I know our students will be loved, challenged, and educated this year. Rick brings out the best in people and he has surrounded himself with an extraordinarily gifted group of faculty, administrators, and staff. When hired, Rick was tasked with growing enrollment from our planning baseline of 595 students. Today, I am encouraged to report an opening student body enrollment of 646. I fully expect that number to continue to climb as the year continues. The Board of Trustees recently gathered to plan for the year ahead and we were fortunate to be able to learn from Dr. Barbara Hodges. Barbara is the Executive Director of the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS). Not only has Barbara seen it all when it comes to independent schools, but since FCIS provides Canterbury’s accreditation, she knows our school well. Barbara suggested we, as trustees, commit our mission statement to memory and use it to guide us as we take the school into our second 50 years. She made a point that stuck with me, that as trustees, we are not elected by the school community. We are chosen by the board as fiduciaries to ensure the school is managed properly for future generations. Good trustees think of their grandchildren and not their children. Dr. Hodges acknowledges it is often difficult to take off “your parent hat,” but suggests it must be subsumed by “your trustee hat” when doing the work of the board. I share this with you because I believe there is a common misconception about what exactly the board does. The board does not review curriculum, set school calendars, or evaluate faculty. Those fall under the purview of our Head of School. He is the board’s sole employee and there exists a chain of command beneath the Head of School for a reason. We have a diverse Board of Trustees comprised of parents, alumni, and respected professionals from all walks of life in our community. Ours is a targeted board and that means each person brings a particular expertise or viewpoint to the table. We will be having an open Board of Trustees meeting on November 9, and I invite you to attend. My goal, as Chairman of the Board, is to ensure transparency in all that we do. The enthusiasm on campus is palpable this fall. We are about to kick off our Canterbury Fund, and I ask you to seriously consider a gift to our school. I know it’s going to be a great year and I wish you and our students the best.

Welcome to Our New Trustees Dr. Rie Aihara Rie and her husband, Dr. Meir Daller, have two children at Canterbury in our Middle and Lower Schools. Rie is a surgeon currently serving as the Medical Director of Regional Breast Care in Fort Myers. She received her medical degree from the University of Southern California and then completed her residency in Boston at the Tufts University/New England Medical Center. In 2003, she moved to Lee County and worked here initially as a trauma surgeon for Lee Memorial Health System. Mr. David Leatherwood David and his wife, Loretta, have four children, two of whom are Canterbury Cougars. David is CEO and Managing Member of Norwich Partners, a successful hotel development and investment enterprise. In addition to his professional career, David has served on, and been an officer for, many nonprofit boards. He was the President of the Friends of the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, President of the Montshire Corporation, member of the Dean’s Council for the Future of Dartmouth Medical School, and member of the Board of Overseers Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Laertes Manuelidis Laertes is a physician with Associates in Dermatology in Fort Myers. He and his wife Alice have two daughters in our Middle School. Laertes has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Princeton and he earned his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine. He is an enthusiastic supporter of the school. Dr. Fred Schaerf Fred and his wife, Melissa, have a son in our Middle School. Fred is the Principal Investigator at the Neuropsychiatric Research Center of Southwest Florida where he is conducting cutting-edge research into the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. He was recognized by The News-Press as Trailblazer of the Year in January 2016. He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and then received both his doctorate and his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He completed his Psychiatry residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Hon. Trudi K. Williams Trudi and her husband, Don, have three grown children. Trudi grew up in Fort Myers and founded TKW Consulting Engineers which is a well-respected, woman-owned engineering firm in Fort Myers. She graduated from Florida International University. She was appointed to the Governing Board of the South Florida Water Management District by Governor Jeb Bush and served as the Board’s Chair. Trudi served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2005-2012 where she chaired the House Natural Resources Policy Committee and the Select Committee on Water Policy.

Investing in Our Future‌

Achievement in The Arts Canterbury recently welcomed a new Arts Director, Dr. William Eyerly, to take our school’s arts program to the next level. Our goal is to provide students with more opportunities to showcase their talents as well as allow for more collaboration with the Southwest Florida arts community.

Supporting Our Athletes To provide more space for our growing athletic program, Canterbury recently expanded Mason Goss Field to a full-size field. Thank you to the Swanson and Dean families for their support in this project.

6

Summer Fun & Learning Summer Programs continue to grow each year, with hundreds of students from all over Southwest Florida having fun while learning at Canterbury. We saw an increase of more than 3 percent in revenue from year-to-year.

Strong Enrollment From Pre-K3 all the way to 12th grade, Canterbury has witnessed a steady increase our new students over the past year. The school has not opened with a 646 enrollment in eight years!

Our Graduates are Going Places More than 140 universities and colleges accepted our Class of 2016 graduates. The students also earned more than $7.1 million in scholarship offers, grants, and awards.

Show Your Spirit! Canterbury pride continues to grow across campus and around the world! The expansion of our school store this past year, now called The Cougar Cave, has played a big part in the spirit showcase.

Strengthening Our Structure In an effort to expand program offerings at all grade levels, Canterbury recently modified its divisional structure to offer three divisions: Lower School (Grades Pre-K3–4), Middle School (Grades 5–8), and Upper School (Grades 9–12). This change not only provided our students with new opportunities, but has also strengthened our division “families” and allowed for more collaboration between the divisions.

The Lucas Challenge

During the 2015-2016 Canterbury Fund, David Lucas challenged the Canterbury Community to give a little bit more through The Lucas Challenge. Mr. Lucas matched every new or increased gift. An overwhelming 183 donors accepted the challenge, and we exceeded our annual goal for the Canterbury Fund by more than 13 percent! This challenge resulted in 97 new gifts and 86 increased gifts, totaling $136,000. Canterbury School is incredibly grateful to Mr. Lucas and the support he has given our school and other organizations throughout the community.

“I believe that my calling in life is to be a servant leader and to help others who are in need. I don’t think this mission to help others is exclusively for me, it applies to everyone. Based on your resources, you should do what you can to help others.” - David Lucas Canterbury Trustee, Alumni Parent, and Current Grandparent Will you become a leader in our community and make a difference in the lives of our students? Please contribute to the 2017 Canterbury Fund today!

Leadership Appreciation Dinner As a way to say thank you to our school’s most generous leadership donors, Canterbury Trustee, David Lucas, hosted a Leadership Appreciation Dinner at Fiddlesticks Country Club on Friday, May 6, 2016. Guests were treated to beautiful piano music by Alexandru D.’16 and a wonderful dinner. Thank you to Kellie Burns-Garvey for serving as emcee for the evening. Kellie welcomed Board Chair Chauncey Goss to address the crowd on behalf of Canterbury’s Board of Trustees. Head of School Rick Kirschner also shared his reflections on his first year at Canterbury and his vision for the future. The evening continued with an uplifting speech by Canterbury alumna KC Wassman ’10, who talked about how Canterbury played such a large role in her life. KC Wassman attended Canterbury through our Merit Scholarship program. The evening concluded with a special surprise for David, as members of the Varsity Baseball team arrived in the room to present him with the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at the State Semifinal game. David made the final remarks of the evening, reminding everyone about why building a culture of philanthropy at Canterbury is so important. He also thanked everyone for their continued support of the school.

“Without my experiences at Canterbury I would have missed out on so many opportunities like being the weekend producer at the White House for NBC News.” - KC Wassman

We extend our profound gratitude to the many donors who generously supported Canterbury School during the fiscal year of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information and listings in this report. Please accept our sincere apologies if any errors or omissions have been made. Please bring oversights to the attention of the Canterbury School Advancement Office.

What is the Canterbury Fund? The Canterbury Fund is the most important fundraising effort at Canterbury. It is critical to accomplish our school’s goals each year and to maintain Canterbury’s tradition of excellence. The Canterbury Fund helps provide the opportunities that make our school an extraordinary place to learn and teach. Since it is necessary to supplement tuition income, we look to charitable, tax-deductible contributions from our trustees, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends. The Canterbury Fund helps to provide quality programs in all subjects and grade levels. Revenue from the Canterbury Fund also provides enrichment opportunities, additional academic resources, and professional development for faculty.

Why is my participation in the Canterbury Fund so important? To quote the National Association of Independent Schools, “Your participation is a vote of confidence that shows your willingness to invest in your children’s welfare and support of the school’s mission. Also, because most foundations consider parent participation rates before agreeing to donate funds to a school, your participation has an impact on our ability to secure grants and outside funding.” No gift is too small, so please give today!

There are many ways to give! Gifts or pledges can be made via personal or business check, cash, or credit card. You may donate or pledge online at www.canterburyfortmyers.org/support. You may also use the enclosed envelope to mail your gift or pledge. If you cannot make a cash gift now, please consider making a pledge today! Pledge reminders will be sent out in early December and May. You can pledge now and pay later. For additional information about other ways to give to the Canterbury Fund, please visit www.canterburyfortmyers.org/waystogive. We have many other opportunities available to support Canterbury including matching gifts, gifts of securities, gifts of endowment, or making a gift to Canterbury as a beneficiary in your will.
