The Canterbury Advantage

OPPORTUNITIES

HISTORY

Incorporated in 1964 and located in downtown Fort Myers, Canterbury School was originally founded as a coeducational elementary school to promote Christian education. The founders were Dr. Joseph Selden, Dr. Edward Saunders, Dr. Vercil Senseman and Mrs. Bernice Grimsley. A year later the campus moved to “The Bungalows” on Royal Palm Avenue and by 1968, had added grades seven and eight. By 1969, the little school had grown to 200 students, compelling the trustees to find a new site on College Parkway and secure funding to construct a new school. Students, faculty and trustees helped move into the new facility over winter break in 1970.

MISSION

PHILOSOPHY

At all levels, the academic program emphasizes individual growth, skill development, a high caliber of instruction, collaboration and high standards. Canterbury provides all students with an opportunity to challenge themselves and take risks in an atmosphere of mutual respect and partnership among students, parents and teachers. Led by a talented and dedicated faculty, the school seeks to build a close-knit community of learners where the whole child is nurtured and developed and where the model of liberal arts education thrives. At Canterbury, the life of the mind is complemented by a strong athletic program and a commitment to the arts and creativity. Canterbury stresses personal integrity and service; we expect our graduates to be lifelong learners and responsible citizens well prepared to help shape a changing world.

“Canterbury has a solid educational foundation, a true college preparatory school that builds on the whole child. My child is very diverse and Canterbury recognizes that and gives him opportunities to be all that he can be.”
