Chamber golf classic presented by southwest airlines set for may 11 The Canton Regional Chamber, along with our Leadership Stark County (LSC) and ystark! departments, are joining forces to produce one exceptional outing and opportunity to golf at Brookside Country Club on May 11. This is the first year that the Chamber, LSC and ystark! have combined efforts to merge what in the past has been three separate outings. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic Presented by Southwest Airlines will give golfers a fantastic opportunity to network with Chamber members, business and community leaders and young professionals, all while enjoying their choice of a morning or afternoon of golf on Brookside’s prestigious private course. Vintage Canton Moves to May ... This is the first year that Vintage Canton, which has been a September event typically, will be held in May. The date change is largely a result of adjustments to the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival schedule, including the introduction of the Canton Kickoff Celebration, a three-day event in downtown Canton this September 10, 11, and 12, which will coincide with the first game of the NFL season on that Thursday. Taste of Canton, which is usually held in May, will be on hiatus this year. This year’s Vintage Canton event will feature some of the finest quality wines from area wineries and abroad; handpicked wine selections from distributors and retailers will also be available. The popular Beer Garden will return with a diverse offering of craft beers.

The first event in the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Utica Capital Seminar Series 2015 is only a few days away. Utica Upstream, a look at exploration and production — drilling activity — in this year of low oil and gas prices, will be April 8 at the Barrette Center at Walsh University. The event runs 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At a time when the exploration and production companies are reluctant to talk in public forums about low commodity prices and reductions in drilling investments, we have assembled a group of experts who will offer their observations on the industry. If your business is interested in the oil and gas economy, you will want to hear what they have to say, We will feature: Shawn Bennett, executive vice president of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association; Congressman Bill Johnson from the Utica Shale counties of Eastern Ohio; Rick Simmers, chief oil and gas regulator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources; Dr. Jeffrey Dick, Youngstown State University geologist and energy industry expert, Rayola Dougher, senior economic adviser at the American Petroleum Institute, and Rick Stouffer, energy industry journalist specializing in the shale plays.
In addition to working on the production of this month’s seminar, the Canton Regional Chamber also participated in the Winter Meeting of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association in Columbus. This annual gathering of about 1,500 people is evidence of the new interest in oil and gas since the Utica Shale exploration began early in this decade. It also is a reminder of the 150-year history of oil and gas production in the Buckeye State. The Chamber also was happy to accept an invitation to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Shale Symposium at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, W. Va. The Federal Reserve assembled university scholars and regional economic development professionals to discuss the economic and community impacts of oil and gas exploration on small towns and rural communities in the Utica.

GO VERNMENT AFFAIRS Chamber Approved 2015 Public Policy Agenda The Board of Directors of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has approved a public policy agenda for 2015. It guides the Chamber’s senior staff and its Government Affairs Committee, chaired by Gust Callas. It serves Goal E in the Chamber’s Strategic Plan: Create a public policy advocacy voice for the region to local, state, and federal government legislators and regulators on regional issues. The Canton Regional Chamber maintains good working relationships with local, state and federal government officials in order to speak to these officials about issues that concern businesses. Beyond Canton and Stark County, the Canton Regional Chamber participates in a public policy group called the Metro Chambers of Ohio, The Chambers of the eight largest cities in the state — Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown — along with the Ohio Chamber meet monthly to examine issues that we can address with one voice, as a coalition, for the benefit of the members of each organization. At this time, Ohio legislators are considering a two-year budget and examining various tax proposals that would have impact on businesses. This is an opportune time for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce to be stepping up its efforts in public policy. Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Agenda Energy Reliable energy at a reasonable price is important to business growth. Law and regulation should encourage growth of existing and emerging energy resources. We recognize the complexity of U.S. energy policy and support comprehensive reform that includes fair-trade measures.
Environment Sustainability is good for business and the environment. We seek harmony between environmental protection and economic growth. Business should be free to use creativity in meeting environmental goals. Conservation of water and other resources are good business practices and should be recognized as such. Regulation: Government regulations must balance the benefits against the cost of compliance. The means of achieving regulatory goals must be practical and must preserve business growth and job creation. Incentives for good practices can achieve regulatory goals. Health Care We support efforts to control health costs and to improve quality outcomes. We also support reductions in uncompensated care. Health care should be accessible, affordable and accountable. Infrastructure We advocate law and policy that will make wise investment in infrastructure. We are concerned about the proper, dependable funding of infrastructure improvements. The nation, our state and our communities cannot allow infrastructure to deteriorate. Tax policy: Tax policy at all levels of government should contribute to a more competitive business environment. It should encourage business investment and expansion, which creates jobs. Tax burdens should be distributed fairly. Workforce: We advocate law and policy that encourages training and education for jobs that are critical to economic growth. We will support rigorous educational goals in our schools, vocational and trade programs, colleges and universities.

UPCOMING EVENTS Tommy Castro & The Painkillers and Albert Castiglia to headline 2015 Blues Festival Northeast Ohio’s premier free blues festival, Canton Blues Fest, has announced a jam-packed lineup with 17 acts on two stages over two days. It’s all happening on Market Square in downtown Canton on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13. Live music runs both days from noon to 10:30 p.m. Headlining the event Friday is Tommy Castro and The Painkillers at 8:30 p.m., with opening act Jimmy Thackery at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s headliner is Albert Castiglia at 8:30 pm., with opening act Biscuit Miller at 6:30 p.m. Please visit the website for the complete lineup. About Tommy Castro and The Painkillers Tommy Castro’s early influences and inspiration were electric blues, Chicago blues, West Coast blues, soul music, 1960s rock and roll and Southern rock. His style has always been a hybrid of all his favorite genres. He began playing professionally in Bay Area cover-song bands in the 1970s. In the 1980s he joined the Warner Bros. Records’ band The Dynatones. In 2001 and 2002, B.B. King asked Castro to open his summer concert tours.
About Albert Castiglia After making his professional debut in 1990, guitarist, singer and songwriter Albert Castiglia was named ‘Best Blues Guitarist’ in Miami in 1997 by New Times magazine. Castiglia completed his college education, then worked for four years as a social services investigator for the state of Florida. He continued to fine-tune his guitar playing, songwriting and singing chops at nights and on weekends in the Miami area. Castiglia has shared stages and jammed with Aron Burton, Pinetop Perkins, Melvin Taylor, Sugar Blue, Phil Guy, Ronnie Earl, Billy Boy Arnold, and Ronnie Baker Brooks, among others. Given that he’s young by blues standards and has a depth and breadth of live, studio and life experience, it is possible Castiglia may yet become a major force behind another blues and blues-rock rebirth.
In May 2010, The Blues Foundation awarded Castro multiple honors including B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, and with his band, Band of the Year. In 2011, Castro stripped down his band to a four-piece unit called The Painkillers. His most recent album, 2013’s The Devil You Know, was recorded with this lineup plus guest appearances by Marcia Ball, Tab Benoit, Joe Bonamassa and The Holmes Brothers.

CONVENTION AND VISITORS’ BUREAU Allyson Bussey Named Interim Director of the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau The Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau (CVB) has named Allyson Bussey as its interim director. Bussey joined the CVB in October of 2007 and has served as assistant director for the past year. In this role, Bussey will oversee the day-to-day operations of the CVB, as well as represent and help implement the Bureau’s strategic vision of elevating the travel and tourism industry on a local, regional and statewide level. She will continue to oversee marketing and brand initiatives, media and partner relations and sales in the leisure and group tour markets. “On behalf of the entire board of directors, I am pleased to share the appointment of Allyson Bussey as our interim director,” said Anne Graffice, executive director of alumni engagement at the University of Mount Union and CVB chairperson. “We are confident leaning on Allyson’s experience within the Bureau and her respected position within the industry. She brings valued expertise and a vision for the future that allows us to continue the implementation of our strategic plan, as well as our ultimate focus which is creating a positive economic impact for our region.”

Bussey has been in the travel & tourism industry for over 15 years and is active in many community and industry roles. She is an executive board member of the Ohio Travel Association, and past president of both the Adventure in Northeast Ohio and Lake Township Chamber of Commerce boards. She was awarded the Northeast Ohio Tourism Excellence Award in 2014 and was the inaugural recipient of the Ohio Travel Industry Emerging Leader Award, also in 2014.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Names Committee Chairs The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have named the following key committee chairs: Nancy Chapman, Hostesses; Rich Wilder, Souvenirs; Maureen Schmucker, Special Events; and Gregory Briggs, Staging.
Chapman retired from Medical Mutual of Ohio Insurance Company in 2013 after 25 years of service and is currently employed in the audiology department at Ohio Head and Neck Surgeons. She has served as an Enshrinement hostess since 1998, and this is her seventh year in the chairmanship role. She is a member of American Health Insurance Plans and Toastmasters of America. Nancy and husband Thomas are parents of two daughters and one son, and proud grandparents of six.
Chapman will be assisted by vice-chairman Daisy Suggs in selecting and preparing the numerous volunteer hostesses who are given various assignments. Each member of the Class of 2015 Enshrinees and their presenters will have a hostess assigned to his family while in Canton, and other hostesses will also be used to assist returning members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and their wives. Wilder is a graduate of GlenOak High School and Bowling Green State University. An estimator-purchasing for Fred Olivieri Construction Company, he previously chaired the Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner Committee, and this is his first year as chairman of the Souvenir Committee. A former Canton Jaycee and an Eagle Scout, he remains active as a volunteer for Stark DD Special Olympics and as a puppeteer for Spring Hill Historic Home Festivals, while serving his church as an elder and deacon. He and wife Tracy are the proud parents of one daughter.
system. A graduate of Canton Central Catholic High School, she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kent State University. A member of the Hospitality Committee since 2008, she also served as vice chairman of the Special Events Committee in 2013, and this is her second year as chairman of that committee. She is a volunteer for the Stark County Exceptional Olympics, active with the Stark County Mathematics Vision Project, and is a lector at St. Louis Church. She and husband Larry are the proud parents of one son and one daughter. As Special Events chairman, one of her major tasks will be to coordinate the Hall of Fame Board of Trustees Reception, which is staged as the first official function for the Enshrinees and their presenters, returning Hall of Famers and other out of town guests. Additionally, the Special Events Committee provides services such as emergency medical and dental assistance for guests of the Hall of Fame during their stay in Canton, and the committee is always on call to assist the Enshrinees and their families as needed. Schmucker will be assisted with these many duties by vice-chairman Sharon Griffith. Briggs is a sub-contractor in the flooring business, so he brings a great amount of expertise to his third year as chairman of the Staging Committee, after serving as a volunteer on the committee for the past 16 years. He graduated from Timken High School and attended Stark State. An Eagle Scout, he is the proud father of one son and one daughter. The Staging Committee directs the planning, preparation and production of the Queen Pageant, Fashion Show Luncheon, Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner, and Enshrinees GameDay
He and his team of highly-energized volunteers are responsible for selling official souvenir and commemorative items at the majority of the 23 events throughout the Enshrinement Festival. Many of this year’s souvenir items, including the collector’s pin, will depict the Enshrinement Festival logo, and all items provide lasting memories of the festivities. Wilder will receive extensive assistance from vice chairman Michelle Moyer. Schmucker is a math teacher at Oakwood Middle School in the Plain Local School

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL & YSTARK! Queen Committee Chair Named, Pageant Tickets Available Brenda Stevens has been named chair of the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Committee. This is her first year in that capacity and assisting her with leadership responsibilities will be Kris Neff, committee vice-chair. A Youngstown native, Stevens is a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, Kent State University, and University of Akron. She is employed as director of multicultural and international services at Malone University. She serves the Stark County area in a wide variety of capacities,
including as a board member for VOICS, JOGS, Leadership Stark County, American Heart Association, and Pathway Caring for Children. She is co-chair for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Mayor’s Breakfast and is director of Christian education at Greater Bethel Apostolic Church. In 2014, she received the Outstanding Women of America Beautiful People Award. She and husband Leonard are the proud parents of two and have two granddaughters. The Queen Pageant will take place Thursday, May 7, beginning at 7 p.m. at The Canton Palace Theatre where 45 outstanding young ladies will vie for the crown. It’s Wearing ... It’s Sharing ...It’s a Fashion Show and Then Some! On April 21, we recycle Wear & Share for an amazing third year. The evening includes shopping, a fashion show, competition, silent auction items, desserts, refreshments and charitable fun….all at the gorgeous Joseph Saxton Gallery in downtown Canton! Wear & Share is an original ystark! event that focuses on reusability. The idea was born out of the ystark! Reads Book Club. A few ystark! members read and discussed Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff which talks about the movement of reusing instead of buying new stuff. We loved this idea and decided to start it here in Stark County. And with that, Wear & Share was born. The Wear: It’s a fashion show of repurposed materials and clothing by local designers. There will

also be hand-picked clothing, accessory and jewelry vendors for your own shopping pleasure! The Share: It’s a clothing drive to repurpose your gently used fashions. Who knows, it may even end up on the runway! The Signature Program has broadened my perspective about my role in the community. Leadership Stark County showed me that some of the best collaboration occurs when people of diverse backgrounds and strengths join together to work for a common mission. My personal contributions, combined with those of a group striving for the same goal, can be very powerful for accomplishing positive change in Stark County. We each have the responsibility to lead change with our own actions when the opportunities present themselves to us. If we want something done then we have to get our hands dirty and start doing – our community is depending on it. Governor Mary Taylor to Speak at Stark County Safety Council Awards Banquet On Monday, April 13, the Stark County Safety Council and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will honor area companies who are committed to maintaining a safe workplace at the 2015 Safety Awards Banquet at Skyland Pines Banquet Center.
Additionally, awards from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Division of Safety and Hygiene will be presented in the following categories: Group Award (for the lowest incident in each group), 100 Percent Award (for each company that worked the entire year without a lost-time injury), Achievement Award (for each company that decreased its incident rate by at least 25 percent from the previous year), and the Special Award (for each company that has accumulated at least 500,000 hours and operated at least six months without a lost-time injury within a year).
