Last year, under the leadership of our outgoing President & CEO, Denny Saunier, we completed the final year of our 5-year strategic plan. This period was marked by achieving milestones that have strengthened our Chamber and community. Denny’s four decades of service have left a lasting impact, and we’re well-prepared for the future thanks to his efforts. 2023 was a year filled with dozens of events and programming like the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, and the inaugural Women in Business Summit and Jackson Township Oktoberfest, which not only brought together people from across the region and beyond, but also significantly boosted

S C M W DP AWAR DED I ND U S TRY S E CTO R PA RTN ERSHI P GRANT The Stark County Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership (SCMWDP) is thrilled to announce that it has been selected as one of the recipients of the Industry Sector Partnership (ISP) Grant, a program initiated by Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted and administered through the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation. The Lt. Governor revealed that 26 workforce partnerships across Ohio will collectively receive $5 million in awards to support collaborations that strengthen the workforce pipeline and align the skills of Ohioans with the needs of employers and the local economy. The SCMWDP is set to receive a portion of this funding to enhance its efforts in building a skilled and dynamic workforce, particularly in the manufacturing sector. This grant will enable the partnership to further its mission of fostering collaboration between businesses, education providers, and communities to address the evolving demands of the industry and contribute to the economic growth of the region. Lt. Governor Husted emphasized the significance of the awarded partnerships, stating, “Today’s awards set a record for the most partnerships created or expanded through the grant in a single round, creating more opportunities for communities and industries to grow that workforce pipeline.” He underscored the importance of encouraging collaboration to train students with the skills that businesses in their regions need.

The Industry Sector Partnership program is designed to develop regional workforce strategies by driving collaboration between local businesses, education and training providers, and community stakeholders. Lydia Mihalik, Director of the Ohio Department of Development, expressed the impact of these grants, stating, “With these grants, we’re able to foster robust workforce pipelines that better meet the evolving demands of our industry partners. Not only are we strengthening the bridge between education and employment, but we’re empowering communities to cultivate strategies that will ensure a skilled workforce for generations to come.” “The Stark County Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership is excited to contribute to these efforts and extend its reach to benefit the local community,” stated James Batchelder, President of the SCMWDP. “This grant will empower us to cultivate collaboration among businesses, education providers, and communities, ultimately benefiting the local community. We are eager to utilize this opportunity to strengthen our workforce initiatives, and we look forward to the continued success of our collaborative efforts in making a lasting impact on the region’s workforce.” The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, through contracted services with the SCMWDP, applied for the ISP Grant and will continue management of SCMWDP grants and programs.

JUMPSTART YOUR 2024 MARKETING STRATEGY: A FRESH START AND THE BUSINESS EXPO By: Rachel Underwood and Lauren Bolton As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect time for chamber members to jumpstart their marketing efforts and set the stage for a successful 2024. In this article, we’ll explore how chamber members can leverage the upcoming Business Expo on February 29th to propel their marketing campaigns. Let’s dive in: 1. Reflect on 2023: Before diving into 2024, take a moment to reflect on your marketing efforts from the previous year. Assess what worked well and what didn’t, identify areas for improvement, and learn from your successes and challenges. 2. Set Clear Marketing Goals: Define your marketing goals for 2024. These could include increasing brand awareness, expanding your customer base, generating more leads, boosting sales, or launching new products or services. Clear goals will help guide your marketing efforts. 3. Develop a Comprehensive Marketing Strategy: Create a well-rounded marketing strategy that integrates both online and offline channels. Consider utilizing various tactics such as content marketing, social media advertising, email campaigns, search engine optimization (SEO), print advertising, and planning to attend and/or sponsor events and expos. 4. Analyze key metrics, such as website traffic, social media engagement, lead generation, and sales conversions. Use this data throughout the year to make informed adjustments to your marketing strategy as needed. Five Ways ChatGPT Can Help Your Small Business When ChatGPT burst on the scene at the end of 2022, many wondered what our AI overlords had in store for us next. The platform gained millions of users in just weeks and continues to impact industries across the business landscape. While the initial hype may have been slightly overblown, there’s no denying that ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for your small business when used correctly. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

1. GENERATE CONTENT

ChatGPT can be used as a language model to quickly create content like blog posts, articles, emails and even ads, saving you the cost of hiring a professional writer and the time of doing it yourself. However, it’s important to understand that ChatGPT has serious limitations in this area. For example, there have been numerous instances where the platform was caught “writing” articles blatantly containing false information. At minimum, you’ll still have to proofread the output, so a certain amount of human supervision and time will be necessary. Secondly, no AI model can know your customer, your value proposition and how those two factors intersect better than you or your marketing team (at least not yet). So, don’t expect ChatGPT to serve as a substitute for developing original or creative ways to communicate with your audience. However, it can move the process along by brainstorming new concepts and content ideas.

2. BRAINSTORM IDEAS

Although you should not fully rely on ChatGPT to write content you can immediately release to the masses, you can use it to brainstorm content ideas and identify topic areas. You can ask it to give you 10 ideas for blog posts that your audience would find compelling (you’ll want to make sure you describe your audience in your prompt and identify your industry). You can also ask it to suggest five email subject lines likely to increase open rates.

Using ChatGPT for customer support will likely require the services of a programmer or developer who can work with its application programming interface (API) to integrate it into your platform or website. You or your programmer will also need to “train” it to respond appropriately to customer questions. The implementation and training process can take some time, but it is a great way to free up your support team to handle more complex issues.

To leverage its potential, ask ChatGPT to “provide a roster of SEO keywords suitable for a blog post on [your topic].” Using the AI tool in this manner saves precious time and also provides unique insights that might take longer to identify on your own.

4. ACT AS A TRANSLATOR

Customer support may not be one of ChatGPT’s “out-of-the-box” features, but the platform can serve as an initial “chatbot” for customers seeking answers to basic questions. You can also use it to walk new customers through product setup steps or explain the core features of a product or service.

Numerous online tools can convert text into different languages, but ChatGPT is notable because it can be integrated into a website relatively quickly. This feature can complement the customer support element previously discussed. While integrating ChatGPT as a translator on your website might require some technical assistance, it enables you to cater to users in over 20 languages once set up. Similarly, you can ask ChatGPT to take existing website content and translate it into another language without getting a programmer involved. Just prompt, copy and paste. This feature is part of ChatGPT’s core functionality.

SEO often involves manually performing mundane tasks like keyword research, which can be time-consuming. Because ChatGPT’s source information comes from a wealth of online content, it can be an asset for producing keyword lists, which are pivotal for enhancing blog posts and improving search rankings.

In the small business world, efficiency is key, and tools like ChatGPT are instrumental in helping you stay productive and profitable.

Matthew Wallace currently serves as the Special Agent in Charge for the BWC’s Special Investigations Department, Northeast Claimant Team. Matt is responsible for overseeing the field operations that are used to identify fraudulent activities of injured workers, declare administrative overpayments, and pursue criminal prosecutions and/or civil remedies. Matt also assists in the collection of restitution payments, which directly impact the effectiveness that the BWC experiences in decreasing Ohio employers’ premium costs. Matt’s geography ranges throughout 23 counties in Northeast Ohio, surrounding the Akron/Canton, Cleveland, Mansfield, and Youngstown Service Offices. Prior to his employment at the BWC, Matt was employed as Police Officer and Detective in the states of Maryland and Ohio. Matt obtained a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University and a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, both in Criminal Justice. Matt has over 20 years of law enforcement experience in both the private and public sectors.
