Third quarter Oil and Gas update from the Canton Regional Chamber The energy business remains brisk at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. We now have two business development seminars under our belts. We are moving forward with a marketing plan to bring more energy businesses to Stark County and Greater Canton. We are continuing to work with companies that want to build oil and gas service facilities in Canton, and we are meeting new companies that want to be Chamber members and participate in the growing oil and gas economy. Meanwhile, companies that already have chosen Stark County as their home in the Utica Shale are making news: Chesapeake Energy has found its permanent home in the Utica, a nearly 300-acre tract known as the Beck Industrial Park in western Louisville, only a couple of miles east of Canton. There, Chesapeake will build a campus of buildings and facilities. Baker Hughes, the worldwide oil services company, which previously announced an enormous facility in Massillon, is on its way

in preparing for operations in the Utica. Mark Morris, operations director for Baker Hughes in Canonsburg, Pa., outlined plans for Massillon when he delivered the luncheon address at the Chamber’s second Oil and Gas Business Development Seminar on June 15. Baker Hughes expects to have temporary facilities ready by around Oct. 1 and construction of permanent facilities around the end of the year. It will operate four to six fleets of 30 trucks each from Massillon. Those fleets will be involved in the hydraulic stimulation of the horizontal wells being drilled by the oil and gas exploration companies in the Utica. Stark County’s industrial leader, The Timken Co., has committed $225 million as its investment in the Utica. That is the cost of expansion of the Faircrest steel mill, so that it is more capable of meeting the demand for drill bits and other tools for the oil and gas industry that require specialty steel. The demand for truck drivers will be great, and the employment plans at the Baker Hughes facility in Massillon provides but one example. (continued next page)

(continued from cover) Fortunately, Canton and Stark County has Stark State College, an eager partner in the Utica. It is working with Zane State College of Zanesville to operate a joint Commercial Drivers License training program to meet the growing demand for CDL drivers. Stark State, under the guidance of petroleum engineer Kathleen Steere, also is developing a number of programs to provide qualified students with the technical education required to work in various oil and gas production occupations. And we cannot forget that Stark State has a $10 million grant from the state of Ohio to develop an oil and gas education campus in downtown Canton. At the Canton Regional Chamber, we are serious about promoting Stark County and the Greater Canton area as: Canton, the Utica CapitalTM. The Chamber was a key partner with the City of Canton and Innis Maggiore in developing the Utica Capital trademark. But a trademark and logo without a plan does not create growth. The Chamber, therefore, has decided to invest in the creation of a marketing plan through Innis Maggiore that would enable the Chamber to promote Canton around the country as a site for oil and gas business development. One tool for marketing Canton as a business location has already been crafted. Canton Inc., a site-selector magazine created by the Chamber and The Repository is in distribution to site selectors and businesses around the country. It tells the story of the diversity of industry and service companies in Canton and Stark County, and it features the burgeoning oil and gas industry as its cover story. We also have attended conferences that have increased our understanding of the wind energy industry and other alternatives to power generation, and our understanding of the development of compressed natural gas and liquified natural gas as an alternative vehicle fuel, particularly for truck fleets. If your business has interest in the subject of alternative fuels, we can connect you with people working in that area. We look forward to helping you in the energy field if we can. For more information, please contact: David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs davidk@cantonchamber.org (330) 458-2059

YSTARK! Young Professional Profile Editor’s note: In keeping with the ystark!’s mission – to attract and retain talented young people in Stark County – ACTION will feature a monthly profile of an individual who represents the group (ages 20-40) that ystark! is targeting. Name: Rob Steinberg Age: 34 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Managing Director, Canton Marathon Why are you interested in Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? I love the idea of not only attracting young talent to our area, but also keeping talent that has been raised here. If you’re from Stark County, you take pride in the progress our area continues to make in this community. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I love taking part in ystark! activities such as monthly meet ups, events and even the recreation leagues. It’s a great way to network while enjoying some time away from the office. I have always encouraged YPs to take advantage of these opportunities as they are a means to meet, greet, and learn from likeminded people with similar goals, backgrounds and experiences. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I am a Stark County native, born and raised in North Canton, lived in Plain Township for two years, and now my wife and I have recently purchased a home in Uniontown. Why have you chosen to live in Canton? Simply put—it’s home, and I’m very proud of this community. I want to make a difference in a positive way for a community that has given me everything over the years and has been so very wonderful to my family. I see a lot of potential for growth right here both personally and professionally, and have always believed in serving your community. Big cities have lots to offer, but most people don’t give enough credit to our city and its opportunities.

12

What type of dwelling do you live in? Having lived in an apartment for the previous two years and purchasing a home recently, I’d say there are plenty of options for YPs to find something that fits both their lifestyle and budget. The housing market is affordable and there are plenty of amenities. What do you like MOST about Canton? I like that there is progress being made in many areas that will continue to attract both business and residential growth. This is a very desirable place to live and work. Our dollar stretches further than almost anywhere else in the country. What do you like LEAST about Canton? I’m not overly fond of the “it’s never been done before, so why start now” way of thinking. Unfortunately, that small-minded mentality is still somewhat present in our culture. Some of the industries have taken a beating in this area, and jobs have declined as a result. But that leads me to believe even more in thinking “outside the box” and creating new endeavors, new opportunities, and doing things in a new way is key. In my humble opinion, that is how we move forward and regain prominence on a regional and national scale. What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement? There is never a shortage of opportunity, culture or community involvement. With so many wonderful events that call Stark County home, so many initiatives within the community to give back, and the ability to explore new areas of interest – Stark County has it all. Whether it’s volunteering for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival festivities, the Canton Marathon, Habitat for Humanity, the Canton Blues Fest or Vintage Canton. Or getting involved in the arts explosion taking place in this area, any of ystark!’s initiatives, the growing oil and gas industry, the technology boom, we have everything in our backyard. The key is deciding what interests you, taking initiative to reach out and simply becoming involved. From there, the possibilities abound. But it comes down to making a decision to be involved and following through.

entertainment?” My responses range from a show at the Palace, the Canton Charge, our affinity for festivals in the summer, some of the best golf, trails and paths the country has to offer. But we need to continue to educate both new and existing members of the community that all of these exist here. Our Convention & Visitors’ Bureau does a wonderful job, but I think it is everyone’s responsibility to tout our community’s amenities. What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? Because work takes up a lot of my time, I like to take my wife to dinner, as well as see friends and family on the weekends. Time is something that none of us ever seem to have enough of, so making the most of it seems the most worthy pursuit for now. I run on our trails and roads every weekend. The outdoor life is so tremendous thanks to Stark Parks! We utilize them for walks and runs with family and friends several times each week. What would you change about Canton if you could? I’d like to see more of a collaborative approach to new opportunities in any form. Standing still means falling back in this day and age. We have the resources and ability to make big things happen for Canton/Stark County, and many are doing just that in just this way. It would be great to see everyone approach life and work this way. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? Yes! It is our home. Our families and our careers are here. This is where we belong. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? The only way I would ever even consider leaving Canton and Stark County is a.) if I couldn’t be of practical service to this area, and b.) if opportunities in my area or skill set ceased to exist. Since both rely largely on my efforts, I’m not willing to let either of those things occur!

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? Probably a true night life. Most commonly I hear “other than bars and restaurants, what does Canton have for

CONVENTION & VISITORS’ BUREAU New pilot program to fund state tourism In a strong showing of solidarity for the travel industry, Convention & Visitors’ Bureau directors and other tourism officials from across the Buckeye State descended upon both the Rock and Roll and the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Thursday, July 5, to celebrate the tourism provisions of the Ohio General Assembly’s Senate Bill 314. Governor John Kasich led a ceremonial signing of the bill at the Rock Hall, and then his entourage came down I-77 for a press conference attended by over 100 guests in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s brand new event and conference center. Hall of Fame president Steve Perry introduced the Governor, followed by the two State Representatives who sponsored the house-version of the bill, Mike Dovilla of Berea, and Stark County’s own Christina Hagan. Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau executive director John Kiste had the honor of concluding the conference and then the Governor took numerous questions on a wide variety of state topics.

the provisions that could enable Ohio’s state tourism division, now called TourismOhio, to double its funding to a cap of $10 million. This funding, assessed through a pilot program, would increase from a base appropriation as sales tax attributed to increased tourism spending continues to rise across Ohio. “Such a funding mechanism gives everyone in the industry the incentive to continue actively and creatively promoting travel and tourism to our neighbors,” said Kiste. “We cannot bring out-of-state guests to our own cherished local attractions if we cannot first bring them to Ohio.” “The tourism industry currently brings $40 billion in revenue to the Buckeye State’s coffers. Working together, we can increase this number to $50 billion in the not-too-distant future,” said Kiste.

Senate Bill 314 is an extensive document dealing with jobs and development across the state spectrum, but the many fans of the bill at this press conference were travel partners excited by

SAFET Y COUNCIL Rig it right and you won’t be wrong: Lifting a load is like planning an event Featuring: Al Abel, lifting specialist for Mazzella Lifting Technologies On Wednesday, Aug. 22, the Stark County Safety Council presents a “safety first” seminar on proper lifting techniques. Most workers, at one time or another, have had to handle materials on the job. Material handling, whether done manually or with mechanical equipment, can be a major source of occupational injuries. There are many different devices that can be used to “move loads,” however special care and training must be employed to ensure the protection of your employees and property. This presentation will cover safe crane operation, but will also address the proper care, use and inspection of slings and below-the-hook lifting devices. Even if you do not have cranes and/or slings in your workplace, you will find the “safe lifting concepts” discussed will be effective for your workplace as well.

Abel has been a lifting specialist for Mazzella Lifting for over 15 years. He travels throughout a multistate area promoting safe lifting practices for companies of all sizes. He is a regular presenter at the BWC Safety Congress. Abel is a Certified Inspector for rigging gear and hardware. He was recently recognized as one of the country’s Top Trainers in the annual competition held by Maximum Capacity Media. Wednesday, Aug. 22 7:30 a.m. registration 8 to 10 a.m. breakfast and program McCall’s Restaurant & Banquet Center 130 Faircrest Ave. SW in Canton Cost: $15 members, $20 non-members RSVP by Aug. 19

Abel will discuss the various forms of lifting devices available to you and reference the specific OSHA and ASME standards that apply.
