Business Takes Flight at NEW B2B EXPO Enjoy sales, networking & education opportunities on Oct. 21 This October, the Canton Regional Chamber and The Repository will present a NEW spotlight event for Stark County businesses – the first annual Business to Business EXPO. This daylong tradeshow will feature products and services from more than 100 area businesses, as well as offer rich networking opportunities and educational programs for regional business professionals. Large and small businesses alike will showcase products and services to thousands of attendees on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Canton Memorial Civic Center, 1101 Market Ave. N in downtown Canton. Creating a Culture of Inclusion in 21st Century Business Key concepts explored at Canton’s first diversity conference The Stark County Human Resources Association, an affiliate of SHRM, and the Canton Regional Chamber are bringing the first ever comprehensive diversity conference to Canton on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The conference aims to define diversity and inclusion within the workplace, and demonstrate how these important business practices can influence the strength and prosperity of the workplace and the community at large. Topics include Diversity & Inclusion 101, Diversity Impact on Economic Development, Developing Your Company’s Inclusion Plan and Recruiting and Retaining Minority Talent. OHSAA Awards Football Finals To Both Stark County and Columbus The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has voted to award both Stark County and Columbus the opportunity to host the state football finals for two years each beginning with the 2012 season. Stark County, which has hosted all or portions of the finals for the past 20 years and has two years remaining on the current contract to host the finals, has been awarded the 2012 and 2013 championships, while Columbus will host the finals in 2014 and 2015. Chamber seeks nominations for annual COMMUNITY SALUTE AWARDS Corporations, business and organizations: the winner must have enhanced the welfare of Stark County citizens through outstanding success in business or service. Individual business professionals: the winner must have demonstrated outstanding performance in his or her profession, which ultimately benefits the community at large.

Community stewards make Canton a better place now and for future generations. We rely on these individuals to guide our community toward growth and prosperity, and to selflessly and tirelessly work to make the place where we live, work and play better. Each year, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce recognizes the area’s unsung heroes at the Community Salute Awards Banquet by honoring select individuals, corporations, businesses and organizations for outstanding contributions to the greater Canton community. This year’s awards dinner will take place Wednesday, Nov. 10, at The University Center at Kent State at Stark.

ENTER THE CANTON/STARK COUNTY CVB PHOTO CONTEST The Canton Stark County CVB is hosting its annual PHOTO CONTEST to encourage local residents, visitors and businesses alike to showcase what they think makes Stark County a great place to visit. The CVB is looking for shots that reflect tourism activities in Stark County. Whether it is a quaint hometown event or a large, nationally known attraction, the CVB wants to see Stark County through your lens! The winning photographer will receive a $200 gas card and the winning photo will be featured in the 2011 Canton/Stark County Official Visitors’ Guide, which is distributed to over 100,000 people, along with the thousands of guests who will see the photo on the Canton/Stark County CVB’s website. Spotlight Stark County, a program for younger professionals age 24-34, begins this September. Participants receive personal leadership skills training from the Corporate University, Kent State University at Stark. Recent grad starts his ystark! Fellowship CHRISTOPHER BURR, TECHNICAL SERVICE SPECIALIST, TIME WARNER CABLE rate communications. His many achievements at Walsh include serving as president of the University’s Business Club, member of the University’s Student Government, crew leader for freshmen move-in and orientation, serving as an alumni ambassador, a member of the Walsh University Entrepreneur Experience and as senator to the University’s Residence Hall Association. Christopher Burr, a recent Walsh University graduate, has begun his ystark! Fellowship with Time Warner Cable. The corporate communications major focused on MIS and IT in his studies at Walsh, and now he’s putting those skills to the test with a tech-heavy, twoyear opportunity in Time Warner Cable’s technology service center. The ystark! Fellowship Program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students who are searching for their first position post-graduation. The Fellowship will offer a true immersion experience – a full-time, salaried, high-exposure work opportunity that offers the benefits of professional development, community service involvement and networking opportunities. Burr will join two other fellows in the program - Aultman Health Foundation and The Repository both began hosting fellows last year. Burr graduated from Walsh University in the spring of 2010 with a B.A. in corpo-

Recent internships include working in the information systems and marketing departments of Walsh University, the IT department of Plasticolors, Inc. in Ashtabula, Ohio, the IT department at Kent State University and as auction assistant at Dufina Auctions in Austinburg, Ohio. “As soon as I saw the information about ystark!’s Fellowship Program around campus, I was intrigued. It seemed like the perfect fit for my career interests,” said Burr. He didn’t realize the extensive IT and technology-related positions available locally with Time Warner.“I’m glad that ystark! exposed me to this highly-technical, computer-based position – otherwise I might have overlooked Time Warner as a potential employer!”

Burr is currently deep in training, beginning with an extensive review of the company’s product lines, computer module testing and hands-on call fielding. He’ll complete his training on Aug. 27, when he’ll join other technical operators on “Tier 3,” Time Warner’s most elevated technical support team. “My experience so far at Time Warner has been exceptional. They’ve already discussed opportunities for advancement with me beyond the two-years of the Fellowship Program, including moving into other communication-based departments. They are truly interested in making sure I’m in the right role for me and letting me grow within the company,” said Burr. Burr is a transplant from Ashtabula County, and he’s eager to get started with the community involvement aspect of his Fellowship experience.“I always stay involved. Interaction is my thing. I want the full experience in my career and in my community. I believe that when you have a connection, you have the commitment. When I made the decision to move here after graduation, I wanted to make sure I was really connected to the area.” Burr currently lives in North Canton, a close commute to Time Warner Cable’s Belden Village location.

Ready, Set, RIDDLE! - PerplexCity is back and more perplexing than ever! ystark! is back with round two of the perplexing puzzle game that took downtown Canton by storm last year. The game will be held in downtown and BEYOND on Saturday, Aug. 28, beginning at 4 p.m. Gather a team of up to five players and make sure that the whole gang is ready for a challenge that will take you all over town in pursuit of confounding clues. You’ll discover new and exciting locations throughout the city as you make your way to different businesses on foot and by car.

Remember: your team must hurry to each clue! You’ll be competing against 20 or so other teams, all racing you to the finish. The winning team will be the first one to solve ALL of the clues and make it to the end of the game, where they will be lavishly celebrated! ystark! participates in Northeast Ohio Intergenerational Summit In June, an invitation-only group of more than 100 leaders, including representatives from the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s ystark! young professional initiative, participated in a first-of-itskind intergenerational summit at the newly renovated Crowne Plaza in Independence. The purpose of the summit was to blend senior and junior leaders to identify priorities to help the region become a talent magnet and reignite its economy. The group, half of which were young professionals, and half experienced, senior leaders, was comprised of state, county and local politicians; presidents and senior executives from the region’s top employers; and leaders from dozens of the region’s young professionals’ organizations. Attendees included representatives from Brunswick Companies, City of Cleveland, Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Foundation, Dominion, FedEx Custom Critical, Federal Reserve Bank, First Energy Corp., Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Greater

Cleveland RTA, Hahn Loeser, Lubrizol, Notre Dame College, Oswald Companies, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, Sherwin Williams, Swagelok, St. Luke’s Foundation, Team NEO, Third Federal Bank and The Timken Company. The morning session was facilitated by Molly Foley and Rebecca Ryan of Next Generation Consulting (Madison, Wis.) NGC’s research was used in developing the ystark! initiative in Canton to assist in retaining and attracting young professionals. The Ohio Utilities Protection Service acts as a commuChuck Green nication link between utility companies and individuals planning any digging activity to make sure that damage protection is the number one priority for all involved.

Chuck Green has worked as a public awareness & services coordinator for the Ohio Utilities Protection Service (O.U.P.S.) since 2007. Primarily servicing the Eastern Ohio Region, Chuck works closely with contractors, excavators and contract locators to spread the message of damage prevention. He provides safety talks to industry groups, participates in several Damage Prevention Councils and Utility Coordinating Councils and promotes cooperation amongst all stakeholders. In addition, Chuck acts as the communication link between O.U.P.S. member facility companies and O.U.P.S. management.

The Canton Museum of Art awarded scholarships totaling $2,000 to four area high school students. Maggie Duff of Jackson High School, who will attend the University of Akron; Katie Eastman of Hoover High School, who will attend Ohio University; Matt Horrisberger of Canton South High School, who will attend Heidelberg University; and Vincent Marazita of Hoover High School, who will attend the Cleveland Institute of Art each received $500 scholarships. Children in kindergarten through eighth grade will work with lead artist Craig Joseph and sculptor Joseph Close in a project called Story Tree, taking its lead from the Dr. Seuss book The Lorax. Children will create leaves and branches of a Story Tree, and engage in literary activities. As in the first artist in residence project, completed in February of this year, this new project combines the creativity of literature with visual arts. The Lorax also highlights elements of the library’s Summer Reading Club theme, Forests Green, Oceans Blue, Books READ as it makes statements on environmental awareness. The Story Tree will be made from recycled and found materials. Picciano’s Martini Bar in downtown Canton celebrated its first birthday in June. The establishment has provided a monthly guest bartending “Tips for Charity” event each month that benefit charities including Child & Adolescent Behavior, Wishes Can Happen, Pilot Club of Akron, Summit United Neighbors, A.B.L.E. Inc., Domestic Violence Coalition, Canton Players’ Guild Theatre, and N.A.M.I. To date, Picciano’s has donated more than $11,000 to charity from these events and from First Friday donations.
